S. Budirsky J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point 0 travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex'85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73-83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4500 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (1a in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the aforementioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf-Forschungshefte, 1984, No. 5, pp. 219-223. From Sept. 22-24, the Las Vegas Convention Center will be home to MinExpo 2008, the world?s largest mining equipment show that comes along once every four years. Sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA), this year?s show is on pace to be the largest ever. Nearly 1,300 exhibitors have purchased nearly 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of booth space. At the center of it all will be some of the most impressive mining equipment that the industry has to offer. And in the shadows of the massive haul trucks, drill rigs and bulldozers, attendees will be able to see the latest and greatest products including hand tools; the latest in automation and robotics; safety and communications equipment; longwall mining equipment; engines and parts; materials handling and processing equipment and services; pollution control equipment; reclamation equipment and services; computer applications; consulting and financial services and more. While many companies will be on hand to display the tried and true, there will also be plenty of new things to see. ?We anticipate that a whole range of new products will be introduced at the show,? the NMA said of the show that has been called the world?s richest deposit of mining technology, services and products. In addition to the show that will take place in Center Hall and North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, MinExpo 2008 includes a conference program with 20 educational sessions that will tackle the most timely and pressing issues affecting the mining industry. In spite of the increasingly polarized and politicized view of climate science and climate change in the United States, many of the principles behind the ?theory? of Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) or Global Climate Change (GCC) are in fact firmly established both in fundamental physics and detailed observations and are widely accepted elsewhere. The discovery of the earth?s ?greenhouse effect? dates back nearly 200 years to the work of French mathematician and physicist Joseph Fourier in 1824 and 1827. In 1872, John Tyndall an English physicist and mountaineer, described the capacity of various gasses to absorb radiant heat. He identified water vapor and carbon dioxide as the principal ?greenhouse? gasses. The work of Fourier and Tyndall was the foundation for the theory that increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere might be responsible for an increase in global temperatures developed by the brilliant Swedish chemist Svante August Arrhenius in 1896. This was backed up by the additional work of Gilbert Callendar in the 1930s, and Gilbert Plass, Hans Suess and Roger Revelle in the 1950s. There is little scientific dispute about the physics by which this occurs: carbon dioxide in the atmosphere absorbs long wave radiation that would otherwise escape into space, thus warming the lower atmosphere and respective temperatures worldwide. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), approximately 2500 climate scientists from around the world, has concluded that increases in carbon dioxide resulting principally from the burning of fossil fuels are responsible for most of the continuing increases in global temperatures (IPCC, 2007). NASA?s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) states; ?The ten warmest years all occur within the 12-year period 1997-2008? (GISS, 2009). 2009 was the second warmest year on record and 2010 was tied with 2005 for the warmest year on record (GISS, 2010, 2011). The science is in fact settled; the earth has not cooled since 1998 as some have claimed. It continues to warm as evidenced by not only surface temperature records but also ocean temperature records as well as changes in physical and biological systems (IPCC, 2007).

"INTRODUCTION Talc is a hydrous magnesium silicate with the approximate elemental composition 4MgO.3SiO2.H2O. It is one of the layered phyllosilicates (like kaolin and mica) but it differs from these in that it is relatively hydrophobic. This is due to its unique crystalline structure whereby a brucite inner layer is sandwiched between silica layers and the adjacent silica layers have no interlayer bonding other than van der Waals forces. This allows talc to be sheared easily along this basal plane, and the surface is covalent not ionic. Talc occurs both as a relatively pure material (>90% talc content) and in conjunction with many other minerals in proportions all the way from 1% to 90%. At lower concentrations, it is often considered a nuisance mineral when it occurs with base metals like copper, molybdenum or nickel or with precious metals like platinum or palladium. It floats readily with these materials and often is suppressed using guar gum or carboxy methyl cellulose which will absorb along the basal surface and make it hydrophilic. Alternately if the reduced ore is hydrophobic, like MoS2, then a partial oxidation of the sulfide will convert the surface to a hydrophilic oxide and the talc can be floated away in a separate step. Talc in grades from 20 to 90% has been commercially exploited in a wide range of pigment (paint and paper), material (ceramic, construction and cosmetic), reinforcing (polymers and composites) and functional (pitch adsorbent, lubricating agent) applications. Initially these tended to be local or regional markets, but eventually with certain higher purity grades, cosmetic, polymer and ceramic applications became valuable enough to be national and trans ocean markets. TALC FLOATATION PLANTS This drove the need for higher purity grades of talc and initially this need was met primarily by ore sorting. This works well for certain deposits with well crystallized talc lenses, but for ores, such as those from widely available ultramafic deposits, where the liberation size is closer to 100 microns, sorting is not effective. That drove the need for floatation and the first investigations were published by Clemmer and Cooke of the US Bureau of Mines in 19362. The first commercial floatation plant was installed in Johnson, VT by the Eastern Magnesia Talc Co in 1937. The circuit is shown in the schematic (Figure 1). The ore was an ultramafic, serpentine derived talc; mineralogy was about 55% talc, 40% ferroan magnesite and 5% oxides, sulfides and other silicates. The oxides include hematite and chromite, sulfides pyrite and gerstorffite and silicates chlorite, serpentine and mica. After crushing, the ore was dry ball milled and then air classified to remove minus 325 mesh fines. The coarse fraction was further classified to cut at about 100 mesh and the fines from this were the feed to floatation. The -325 mesh (about 15% of the ore) was sold as a paint grade and the plus 100 mesh (about 25% of the ore) was screened to make an asphalt backsurfacing grade."

In a mineral processing plant, the determination of a preventive maintenance schedule is one of the most important maintenance policies. In this study, to determine the preventive maintenance schedule for the Emet Colemanite Mineral Processing Plant in Turkey, a mean quality control chart was constructed using the historical concentrate B2O3 grade data. The effect of preventive maintenance scheduling on B2O3 grades was monitored using the mean quality control chart. It was determined that recovery increased after each preventive maintenance scheduling. Close examination of the mean quality control charts indicated that there were three periods that showed different grade characteristics. These were identified as the period ?prior to preventive maintenance,? the period ?after preventive maintenance? and the period ?requiring preventive maintenance.? These periods were compared as two independent samples by using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Application of this test for interpretation of the mean quality control chart enabled the authors to analyze the system effectively, and it showed that the preventive maintenance for this plant should be scheduled at four-month intervals.

Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits to meet federal dust standards at the working face of a roomand-pillar coal mine is a challenge for a mine operator. With the recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber could achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90%. But, the operation of such a system is maintenance intensive. The flooded-bed scrubber screen becomes clogged with dust particles and requires frequent cleaning to maintain performance. However, the dust control issue is not solely a mining industry problem. Other industries face similar issues. The University of Kentucky collaborated with Toyota Motor Manufacturing on the development of a novel wet scrubber, called the vortecone scrubber, for capturing oversprayed paint particles in automotive paint booths. The vortecone scrubber achieved a cleaning efficiency of 99% and required minimal maintenance. This study aims to assess the ability of this vortecone scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. The paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this vortecone scrubber. It discusses the effects of air quantity and dust particle size on the performance of the scrubber.

Commodity price down cycles are a fact of life in the mining industry. And companies pre-pare for them as best they can. Evenso, operations are still curtailed or closed during those cycles, profits shrink, layoffs are inevitable and many companies do not survive. However, one of the few good things that occurs during down cycles is the new, innovative exploration, mining and processing technologies that come about during hard times. To survive the lean times, the mining industry turns to improved technology to decrease costs and hold the bottom line. And, because mining is a cyclical business, each down cycle brings about technology improvements that carry over into the good times.

INTRODUCTION Many excellent papers have been written and presented regarding agricultural lime and the subject has been covered extensively in books concerning soil science, fertilizing, limestone, etc. We felt challenged to construct a paper that wouldn’t merely be a repetition of past presentations. Therefore, we chose to begin with factors having the most impact on plant growth realizing that the audience is likely to be relatively unfamiliar with this subject. So, we decided to dig deep into the roots of soil and plant growth science in order to better understand the significant role of limestone in this important area. The soil with the higher plants growing upon it forms an open and dynamic ecosystem in which there is flux of energy and material (heat, light, water, nutrients, mineral and organic matter, organisms). Plants root in the soil and then take up oxygen for root respiration, yielding energy for nutrient uptake, water for turgescence and transpiration and use in photosynthesis and the mineral nutrients needed for the synthesis of organic matter. Above the ground the plant takes in light energy and heat using them in photosynthesis to assimilate atmospheric CO2. Photosynthesis is the basic life process of creation. However, we will look at the root room where soil, water, air, and heat economy and the supply of nutrients determine soil fertility and the important role lime plays here. Location is the primary point to be considered when discussing agriculture (climate and soil); secondly, the dynamic and mobility of the minerals (plant nutrients) in the soil; and thirdly the conversion of organic substances into humus. And then there is a great deal of water involved in the growing process. In order to produce 1 kg of dry plant substance, 300 to 800 kg of water must be pumped through the plant and is then lost by transpiration. Cereals, vegetables, and sugar beets consume between 400 to 500 kg of water during the growing process and long-growing crops, such as alfalfa and clover, can consume 600 to 800 kg of water per kg of finished product. Without water, a plant cannot grow. (Reference 1)

"This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2014 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry.Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. current dollars provided by SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) of Charlottesville, VA; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2014 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources are used to develop these compilations, statistics may differ depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2014 for 19 nonfuel mineral commodities based on company surveys. Research focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (iron ore, phosphate and potash), and specialty mineral commodities (diamond, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements, tantalum and uranium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, rare-earth elements and tantalum were compiled for the first time in 2010 because of their increased significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL compilations. SNL budget estimates exclude bauxite, coal and oil and gas. Exploration budget estimates for iron ore have been compiled since 2011 but reported separately. The 2014 SNL company survey is reported by SNL to cover an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that is not covered includes companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities"

The Getchell Mine is located on the east flank of the Osgood Mountain Range in the Potosi Mining District, Humboldt County, NV. Mining in the area first began in 1883 for copper, lead and silver in skarn-related deposits. Tungsten was discovered in the skarns in 1916 and was mined sporadically until 1957. The first major discovery was made in 1933 when two Winnemucca prospectors, Edward Knight and Emmett Chase, found gold at the present site of the Getchell gold mine. In 1934, after a small amount of preliminary prospecting, the claims were purchased by Noble H. Getchell of Midas, NV. The Getchell Mine Inc. was organized and exploration and development work began on a broad scale. Major funding was provided by George Wingfield and investors he assembled. Laxalt described Wingfield’s immediate history prior to his financing of Getchell as follows.

The only nickel smelter and the only active nickel mine in the United States is Glenbrook Nickel Co., a joint venture (50% each) of Cominco Resources International Ltd. and Cominco Ltd. In 1989, with the nickel price riding high between $2.30 and $2.70/kg ($5 and $6/lb), Glenbrook seized the opportunity to purchase and recommission a southwestern Oregon ferronickel smelter and the adjacent nickel-ore mine. This Douglas County site is only about 97 km (60 miles) due east of the Pacific Ocean, and California's border lies a similar distance to the south. Hanna Mining Co. had closed the operation in 1987. And the following year, the equipment had been largely stripped for salvage value. From November 1990 through August 1992, the mine supplied an average 5 kt/d (5500 wet stpd) of ore. Currently, with import ore supplying 40% of the smelter feed, the mine's daily tonnage averages 4.2 kt (4600 wet st). From November 1990 through August 1993, the mine has delivered 2.1 Mt (2.3 million st) of ore grading 1.22% nickel with an average moisture content of 26%. Buffaloed nickel? A nickel is not worth what it was in 1989 and neither is ferronickel, with recent prices hovering around $1.13/kg ($2.50/lb). To survive, Glenbrook has focused on increasing smelter production to lower its operating costs. And this strategy has triggered several bold moves: • a new, $30 million, port facility and • a 10-year importation contract for ore from New Caledonia, an island approximately 1000 km (625 miles) east of Australia. For a Glenbrook update, a May 25, 1993 visit was made to the company's Oregon operations - the mine and smelter near Riddle plus its new Coos Bay port facility. Unfortunately, as the rain came down that day, so did news of another temporary shutdown. The previous suspension had lasted from Dec. 20, 1992 until Feb. 22, 1993. Barely three months back to work on a wet May afternoon, more than 250 of Glenbrook's approximately 300 employees contemplated yet another shutdown, effective July 31, 1993.

A complex soil profile and high water table, together with a below-grade active subway tunnel, an above-ground elevated railway line, and the heavily travelled Northern Boulevard all passing above the tunnel alignment, combined to make mining of New York?s Northern Boulevard Crossing what is widely considered to be the most challenging portion of the multi-billion-dollar East Side Access project. The Northern Boulevard Crossing is a vital link in this project which, when completed, will connect the Long Island Railroad to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. How the sequential excavation method (SEM) tunneling was successfully accomplished, despite the obstacles, was a textbook exercise in practical innovation coupled with close cooperation between the owner, the construction manager, Hatch Mott MacDonald, the designer, Parsons Brinckerhoff, the contractor, Schiavone-Kiewit, and spe-cialty geotechnical contractor, Moretrench.

INTRODUCTION The Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) in North Carolina is the fourth largest airport in the southeast region of the United States. The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority is currently underway with planning, designing and constructing are placement Passenger Terminal as part of the Major Capital Improvements Program at Raleigh Durham International Airport. The Terminal C Expansion and Renovation Project will replace the existing Terminal C structure with a new processor building and concourse. The project is separated into several contracts. The early stage contracts are constructing a west side storm water management facility, relocating taxiways, installing new drainage systems, installing new aircraft apron pavement, Demolition, the Central Energy Plant and Early Foundations. The later projects are the Terminal Building, Passenger Boarding Bridges, Information Technology Systems and Integration, Furniture, Furnishings & Equipment and Specialty Millwork. The Terminal Building will be constructed in two phases. Phase 1 constructs the north half of the new terminal. Airline operations will move to the new terminal at the completion of this phase. Phase 2 completes construction of the south processor building. The full build out of the project, subject to funding availability, will replace the remainder of the south concourse. The Program’s primary focus is to replace the existing passenger Terminal C with a new terminal that will provide more passenger gates and larger passenger screening, ticketing and baggage handling facilities. The planning for the New Terminal C Program began in 2002 with construction starting in March, 2003. The continuing growth of passenger airline travel in the Raleigh/Durham metropolitan area requires RDU to expand its facilities to keep up with the present and future growth within the Region. In October of 2002, the RDU Airport Authority selected Parsons Transportation Group as the Program Manager/Construction Manager to help assist in the development of the Terminal C expansion program. RDU Airport Authority selected the Seattle Washington Office of URS Corporation as the Engineer of Record for the West Side Storm Water Management Facilities. The Westside Storm Water Management Facilities Project became one of the early critical path activities of the overall RDUAA Terminal C Expansion Program. The Briar Creek Reservoir had been constructed to accommodate storm water runoff to the west of the Airport. The existing 1.5 m culvert that drained runoff from the airport terminal (area) to the reservoir was insufficient in supporting the additional flows

Construction of a pump station, consisting of an inlet chamber, wet well and pump chamber, required excavation to a depth of 9.7 m (32 ft) below ground surface and more than 7.6 m (25 ft) below the ground water table in a rural, but rapidly developing part of southern New Jersey. Private houses are located [ ] within a few hundred feet of the pump station that use shallow wells for water supply. The pump station design anticipated support of the entire pump station on shallow foundations bearing directly on the underlying natural soils. However, during construction, uncontrolled ground water flow caused ground loss and damage to the bearing qualities of foundation soils. As a result, remedial repairs were required including support of the pump station on drilled pile foundations and releveling of the pump chamber that had settled. This case study is an example of where a poor understanding of the significance of upward flowing ground water had a major impact on the cost of construction. Anticipated subsurface conditions The pump station layout is shown in Fig. 1 with the locations of two borings made prior to construction superimposed. One of the borings was located within the footprint of the deep wet well excavation. Generally, this is not advisable where a deep excavation is required below the ground water table. This is because there is a history of projects where ground water seepage, or pressure, has broken out into an excavation through an ungrouted borehole and compromised the integrity of foundation soils. Logs of the borings did not indicate that the borings [ ] were grouted upon completion.

The 32nd annual short course ?Grouting Fundamentals and Current Practice? was held at the Colorado School of Mines, June 13-17, 2011. The field demonstration portion of the course was conducted June 16 at Baski Inc.?s yard in Denver, CO. The full-scale field demonstration presents many types of drilling and grouting equipment in operation as well as numerous grouting methods per-formed under various field conditions. As part of the field demonstration, the class was shown the proportioning, mixing, testing and injection of various cement grout mixes into sand columns under controlled and recorded conditions. These sand column demonstrations have been conducted under controlled and measured conditions each year since 1999 as part of the short course. The sand column demonstrations were conducted prior to 1999, but with less quality control and minimal record keeping of the proportioning, mixing, testing, injection pressures and the final permeation results.

Utah produces a wide variety of industrial rock and mineral commodities, valued in 2005 at a record $758 million (21 percent of the total non-fuel mineral production of Utah). Major commodities produced in 2005 include salts (halite, potash, and magnesium salts), Portland cement, sand and gravel, carbonates (lime, limestone, and dolomite), phosphate, crushed stone, clays, lightweight aggregate (expanded shale and perlite), gypsum, silica, sulfur and sulfuric acid, and building stone. Commodities produced in smaller amounts include diatomite, pumice, gemstones, ornamental stone, fluorspar, and mineral and fossil specimens. Utah is in a period of rapid growth in industrial rock and mineral production; however, some commodities have grown faster than others. The robust western economy has stimulated production of construction-related commodities like sand and gravel, Portland cement raw materials, lime, and building stone, resulting in exploration for raw materials, development of new quarries, and expansion of existing plants

Zircon (ZrSiO4) sand production of about 1.1 Mt/a(1.2 million stpy) predominates the global supply of zirconium minerals. Baddeleyite (ZrO2) contributes less than 1 percent of supply. Zircon is almost exclusively produced as a co-product from the mining of titanium minerals, mainly from mineralized beach sands. In 2004, there were a number of new projects under consideration that were more dependent on zircon revenue than for titanium minerals. This reflected sustained higher zircon prices and forecast ongoing supply shortages in the absence of major new discoveries.

A selective extraction and separation of zirconium by solvent extraction with 1-octanol is proposed. The process is based on the dissolution of the metal basic carbonates in hydrochloric acid in the presence of potassium fluoride, using 1-octanol as extractant. The effect of several process parameters, including hydrochloric acid and potassium fluoride concentrations, reaction time, and phase ratio between the aqueous and the organic phase was investigated. Zirconium is enriched in the organic phase. The best extraction and separation results were obtained with the basic carbonate dissolved in 10% hydrochloric acid and 1.5 M potassium fluoride. The optimum reaction time was 15 min with an organic to aqueous phase ratio of 2:1. Based on the selectivity of zirconium over hafnium in the organic phase, a McCabe-Thiele diagram was constructed. A near complete stripping of zirconium from the organic phase was achieved using a 3 M sulphuric acid solution. Additional studies are required in order to determine the reaction mechanism and the chemical speciation of the current investigation.

The leaching behavior of silver and silver oxides in ammonical solutions has been studied. The current study is concerned with an effective recovery of silver from secondary sources such as spent silver batteries. Silver associated with these batteries appears in various forms including metallic silver, argentous oxide, Ag2O and argentic oxide, AgO. The leaching behavior of metallic silver in ammoniacal solution has been studied using an electrochemical mehtod. Oxidants used in this study include hyperchlorite, hydrogen peroxide, bromine and iodine. Results on cyclic polarization and Tafel plots on the silver anode in ammoniacal solutions are presented and the results are discussed. The dissolution rate of metallic silver in ammoniacal solutions is also compared with those of silver oxides.

A dump edge and vehicle proximity warning system is being developed at the Colorado School of Mines using GPS and wireless local area networks to improve the safety of off-highway trucks in open pit mines. After two years of research, software development, and testing in the laboratory, field tests are currently being carried out at operating limestone quarries and open pit mining operations to evaluate the effectiveness of the system under rugged operating conditions. This paper describes the progress made on this NIOSH-funded project and discuss, tests carried out recently, at the Morenci open pit copper mine in Arizona.
