The ability to predict the dewatering performance of an industrial hydrocyclone from a laboratory-model hydrocyclone is of great importance. In this study, laboratory-scale hydrocyclone experiments were conducted using silica sand samples at 10 percent solid concentration for dewatering with Mozley hydrocyclones with diameters of 2 in. and 4 in. The objective is to predict the design parameters for an industrial dewatering cyclone to achieve higher solid concentration in the underflow. A model was developed based on the Nageswararao hydrocyclone model with the help of a commercial simulator for a hydrocyclone operating at 100 t/h and 20 percent solid concentration to achieve 80 percent solid recovery at 45 percent solid concentration in the underflow.

In the late 1980s and into the 1990s, the Mountain Pass Mine in California produced about 40 percent of the world?s rare earth elements. At the height of this production, the facility produced up to 54 L/s (850 gpm) of saltwater that was piped to offshore holding ponds where the water was evaporated. In 1998, following a series of waste water pipeline breaches, separations activities were suspended, reducing the Mountain Pass site to just the openpit mine and mill. The environmental concerns were addressed and the affected areas have since been remediated. However, in the years following the breaches, 97 percent of the world?s production of rare earth elements moved to China. By 2011, Molycorp, and the Mountain Pass Mine, had rebounded from the difficult times and were once again in a position to become a significant player in the rare earth industry.

Ash is a material that many people leave to nature to handle. Others sometimes sweep it under the rug to be disposed of by someone else. In our business we cannot do either. In fact the American Electric Power System spends many millions of dollars in plant investment costs to collect the material, and then many more millions to dispose it. In 1965 alone the coal fired steam generating plants in., the AEP System produced approximately 2,400,000 tons of ash, enough to fill 40,000 coal cars which would extend as a single train across the entire states of Ohio and Indiana. Even though our present ash production is large, this is only the beginning when we forecast the future growth of our system. By 1980 it is estimated that our generating capacity will expand to about three times its present size, and with coal as our primary source of fuel our ash production will increase proportionately to about 7 million tons a year.

Some 146 kt (4.69 billion oz) of gold have been mined throughout history. Of this, 70% has been mined in this century alone, with 17% produced from 1985 through 1996 (Fig. 1 and Table 1). Until the mid-19th century, placers were the chief source of gold. Advancements in mining, metallurgy and geological thinking have resulted in underground mining (first of veins plus stockworks and later of Rand-type deposits) becoming the principal source of gold. With the demise of the South African deposits and the move towards lower grade ores, the primary source of gold will be from disseminated deposits exploited through large, open-pit mines. For the past 200 years, there has been a fairly constant ratio of about 31 g (1 oz) of gold to each person alive. If this ratio is to be maintained, annual gold production will have to rise from about 2.3 kt/a (73.9 million oz/year) to more than 3.1 kt/a (99.7 million oz/year) by the year 2000. To effect this increase, an unforeseen breakthrough in exploration or metallurgy is needed. Barring this, there will be pressure for an increase in the price of gold. This article traces the historical production of gold from 4000 B.C. - the earliest record of gold mining - to today and relates this 6,000-year record to advances in geological thinking, mining engineering and extractive metallurgy. It also proposes that man's thirst for gold, reflected in the price he will pay for gold, and his ability to find, mine and refine gold have combined to effect an equilibrium based loosely on the historical ratio of 31 g (1 oz) of cumulative gold production per each man or woman alive.

The term "powder factor" is almost universally accepted as the measure of the efficiency of a blasting program. It represents the economics of blasting since it designates quantity of explosive (thereby providing quality control in rock fragmentation) in terms of the associated volume broken. It is the wide use of this concept that explains the interest shown in an approach to rock blasting preferred by A. W. and Z. W. Daw* in a treatise on 3 blasting (1) substantiating its use in the form, Q = CVW3 for single shot hole, where Q = quantity of explosive lb Cv = blasting coefficient W3 = unit volume of rock It is obvious that the term Cv could also be called the apparent powder factor should the equation be written in the form, Cv = Q/W3 (lb per cubic unit). However, while the approach was ingenious** and the practical applications straightforward, their original, rather limited experimental work, along with certain assumptions, was questioned.

The Communaute Urbaine de Montreal is currently involved in construction of the South Interceptor which consists of 53 kilometers (33 miles) of 1,800 mm (6.0 ft) to 5,400 mm (18.0 ft) diameter tunnels for the purpose of collecting, storing, and delivering sanitary and combined sewage to the treatment plant. Work is divided into ten separate contracts; nine of which have already been bid. The purpose of this paper is to describe construction activities that have been performed through the end of 1986 with emphasis on a general layout of facilities, a summary of subsurface conditions, and brief descriptions of actual construction activities for the six contracts where tunneling has been performed. All projects are being excavated with tunnel boring machines.

Because of its many advantages, roof bolting has been widely used in hard-rock underground mines. In this paper, the applicability of roof bolts to mine openings in frozen ground, and the affects of bolts on the stability of the openings are presented. A comprehensive finite-element program, ABAQUS, was used to analyze the temperature distribution, the stress field and the displacement, field around a mine opening. Openings that were supported by roof bolts and openings that were unsupported were both analyzed. The thermal and mechanical processes were treated as a quasi-coupled problem, with the thermal analyses being conducted first, followed by the mechanical analyses in each case. For the opening under consideration, i.e., a roof area of 15 m2, five to seven roof bolts are appropriate. When the number of bolts is less than five, the displacement within the ground can be improved only locally.

The Missouri-Oklahoma tripoli district was discovered and first mined in 1869 near Seneca, Missouri. Tripoli is a microcrystalline form of high-purity silica that is porous, light- weight, and friable and is derived from a parent siliceous sedimentary rock from which soluble minerals have been leached. Tripoli deposits, 2 to 20 feet thick, occur in cherty limestones of Mississippian age beneath 2 to 10 feet of overburden. They are mined in open pits up to 9 acres in size. The color of tripoli is white, but it also commonly is light pink or red where stained by red iron oxides and clays. Ground tripoli is used commercially as an abrasive or in buffing and polishing compounds and is prized for such physical characteristics as its abrasiveness, porosity, permeability, absorption, and specific gravity.

A technique is presented for the economic selection of a slurry pipeline with the aid of a computer. Mathematical models for the flows of homogeneous slurries are utilized. Only the pipeline and its prime movers are considered. Slurry flow properties are first obtained from rheology and/or pipeline data measurements. A rheological model is then selected for the slurry. It must be emphasized that the accuracy of the method is greatly affected by the accuracy of the slurry flow-property data. Approximate cost parameters may be selected from data for plain and lined pipes, centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, motors and engines. Cost data for the purchase, operation and maintenance of slurry pipelines are also described. A total cost equation for the ownership and operation of a slurry pipeline system is then established. The complexity of the equation is a function of the rheological model selected to describe the slurry. The equation is solved with the aid of a computer for several combinations of pipeline diameters and throughputs to yield minimum total annual cost for the system. A mean velocity is then computed to give the required throughput. The velocity is constrained by an upper and lower bound. A high velocity is undesirable from an energy consumption viewpoint and if pipeline wear is possible. On the other hand, the velocity must exceed the deposition velocity for a heterogeneous suspension or the critical velocity for a homogeneous suspension. There is no guarantee that the velocity developed by this method will lie within the constraints applied, nor that the constraints are even known. This is particularly true for heterogeneous slurries. An important feature of the method is the ease with which the variables can be adjusted to measure the sensitivity of the total cost to the variables. The purpose of the sensitivity analysis is to identify those critical variables that. if changed, can considerably affect the total cost. Mathematically, individual variables are changed and the effect of such a change on the annual total cost is computed. But from a designer's point of view, individual components in the system are changed to study their effect on the annual total cost. A change in one component of the system may involve a change in one or more variables. For example, the replacement of a steel pipe by a smooth-lined pipe will change the pipewall roughness and wall thickness as well as purchase, operating, and maintenance costs.

Recent developments undertaken to improve mine productivity are also dealt with together with some notes on proposed measures to obtain further gains in productivity.

The objective of the Cerrejon Coal Project is to mine and export a minimum of 15 million metric tons per year of bituminous coal from the Guajira Pennisula in Colombia, South America. Major components of the project will include an open pit mine, 150 km railroad, marine terminal for storage and shipping, and accommodations for the support personnel. This paper primarily reviews the coal handling facilities at the mine and port which will include crushers, conveyors, silos, stacker/reclaimers, and a shiploader. Of special interest is the design concept for unloading bottom-dump railcars, a programmable controller control system with automatic stacking and reclaiming, a linear-type shiploader, and 2.4m wide conveyors running at 5 m/sec.

Applications of machine learning and robotics in the tunneling industry are still nascent. Research and development are ongoing in TBM guidance; prediction of TBM cutter wear and tunneling induced ground deformations; and robotic arms for segment installation, inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of TBM cutting tools. This paper presents a case study of geological profile reconstruction using multimodal machine learning. The results from this study can aid the development and application of multimodal AI technologies to generate data reports and geological profiles in real time, taking voice recordings, photos, or videos obtained directly from the field as inputs.

Examination of cored material from the Southern Extension of the Florida Phosphate District has indicated a decidedly complex and diverse sequence of phosphatic sedimentary units. The perfunctory logging techniques formerly used in the Central District are inadequate to properly describe the intricate geology of these sediments. Adequate geologic training and familiarity with the potential ramifications of his judgement are a necessity for the logging geologist. A combination descriptive-graphic logging model is proposed that utilizes a standardized sediment nomenclature system and descriptive symbols for type materials commonly found in these sediments. Justification for adoption of this or a similar logging model is discussed.

INTRODUCTION From 1967 to 1976 in the Federal Republic of Germany about loo km tunnels and 125 underground stations were constructed for municipal and commuter railways solely. Additional a remarkable amount of road tunnels and sewers were built. In 1977/78 a further 27 km railway tunnels, 3.5 km road tunnels and 65 km sewers and utility lines were under construction. This shows an enormous volume of tunnel construction work. In connection with this activity various technical research and development programmes have been carried out. They deal with nearly all fields of underground works as for example soil and ground exploration, excavating and lining techniques, calculation and last but not least waterproofing problems. It is impossible within the framework of this report to touch on all the problems. Therefore, only one problem area with its different aspects will be discussed: waterproofing systems and their last developments in Germany, especially, joint sealing with special consideration of the waterproofing of concrete segmental tunnel lining (1)

With the construction management team established and a full funding agreement secured the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) now has the manpower and the financial resources to continue Metrorail construction into the 1990's. This paper describes WMATA's new role as construction manager after the transition from Bechtel Associates and gaining the full funding agreement with the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) and regional governments to complete 84.7 Metrorail miles (136km). The authors review the most recent station and line tunneling projects. WMATA's contractors have employed the state of the art soft ground and hard rock tunneling equipment and methods - an earth pressure balance TBM, a closed face TBM, and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). In final, the paper previews future underground work to be let under the funding agreement.

The integration of the ESZ orebody and DOZ orebody resulted in a much larger footprint than the original DOZ Mine shape. The significant change in footprint geometry presented new cave front management challenges, specifically: longer undercut drifts. Using a constant blasting rate, more time is required to complete caving in each drift which ultimately influences the number of active faces at any point in time. The number of manageable active drifts is controlled by the planned square-meters of undercut blasting, lead/lag restrictions and other specific conditions such as the need to blast pre-charged explosives. In early 2008, an evaluation of the existing plan showed that significantly more active undercut drifts and longer cave fronts would occur in the next five years. Difficulties associated with the long cave fronts led to a decision to redesign the caving sequence. Several different boundary options based on operational, geotechnical and ore grade parameters were investigated. This paper describes the issues faced with long cave fronts, the constraints and requirements to effectively manage the caving sequence and the options considered to mitigate this situation.

INTRODUCTION The most serious occupational radiation episode in U.S. history was the exposure of uranium miners to radon daughters in the 1945-1968 time period. Although the maximum permissible dose at that time was 12 WLM (working level months) per year, average exposures were several times that figure, and ten times higher exposures were not uncommon. Starting in the early 1960s, mounting epidemiological evidence appeared for an excess incidence of lung cancer among these miners; up to 1974, there was an excess of 134 cases (159 observed vs 25 expected) among the 4000 in the group under study (NAS-1980). When this excess became apparent, the Federal Government took jurisdiction, greatly tightened enforcement, and in 1969 lowered the maximum permissible exposure to 4 WLM per year. These standards were met largely by a great improvement in ventilation. As a result of these measures, average miner exposures were reduced 5-fold from 1965 to 1968 and by another factor of 3 by 1970. In 1978, the 4 WLM/year maximum permissible exposure was exceeded by only 37 of 7500 underground miners, for only 16 wars it exceeded by more than 25%, and for only 8 was it exceeded by 502 (AIF-1980). The average exposures to the various groups are listed in Table 1. We see that the average exposure for all miners was 1.03 WLM, and for those who worked essentially full time underground it was 1.45 WLM. For purpose of later discussion, it will be convenient to choose a single value for average exposures. In view of the fact that employment situations and job categories are bound to vary over a lifetime of work, we take this to be 1.3 WLM/year. The purpose of this paper is not to dwell on history, but rather to address the question of whether or not this present situation is satisfactory. This question was considered recently by a study group under the auspices of National Institue of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH-1980) and it answered the question in the negative, concluding that the maximum permissible exposure should be substantially reduced. However, their arguments were incomplete and were lacking in perspective. The principal thrust of this paper is to provide some of the material overlooked. RISK TO URANIUM MINERS FROM RADON EXPOSURE In order to quantify the risk to uranium miners under present working conditions, it is first necessary to estimate the risk of lung cancer per WLM of exposure. The most straightforward way of doing this is to use the data on the group of uranium miners under study. These are listed in Table 2 for 8 exposure ranges and for the total group (NAS-1980). If all data are given equal weight, the risk is seen to be 3.5 x 10-6 per year per WLM. Much can be said in favor of using this value for the risk as dose independent; it is within one standard deviation (SD) of the observations in 5 of the 8 dose categories (as expected from the definition of SD), and within 2 SD for all 8, and for the three cases differing from the mean by more than one SD, two are above and one is below. However, the uranium miner exposures in the present situation will be far below those covered in Table 2, so it is worth considering the possibility that the risk differs from this at low doses. From the last column of Table 2 we see that the experience from all exposures below 600 WLM indicates a risk higher than the mean for the entire group by more than two standard deviations (the value 600 WLM in this comparison was deliberately chosen to maximize this deviation; for exposures below 360 WLM and 840 WLM, the excess is only 1.0 and 1.6 standard deviations respectively). In view of this tendency for the risk to be higher at lower dose, we will take the risk to be 5.0 x 10-6 per year per WLM in what we will refer to as model A. The characteristics of comminuted hematite products using a high pressure grinding roller (HPGR) and conventional jaw crusher (JC) were comparatively studied by screening, optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) techniques. Major properties investigated included product size distribution, particle cracks, specific surface areas and pore volumes. Results showed that in a closed-circuit operation with a screen opening of 3.2 mm, the HPGR and JC gave a similar P80, but the HPGR achieved a more uniform size distribution, more fines and a higher crushing efficiency. Three modes of cracks were identified, namely transgranular cracks, innergranular microcracks and intergranular microcracks. Transgranular cracks originated from shearing breakage. Innergranular and intergranular microcracks were generated by HPGR via the two main nonrandom breakage forms, preferential breakage and interfacial breakage, depending on their respective ability to endure stresses when mineral phases (particles) were loaded against each other. The BET values for the same-size fractions showed that HPGR products gave higher specific surface areas and more pore volumes than JC products. This indicates that HPGR-crushed products are easier to grind because of their high porosity and extra cracks.

A tube bundle system (TBS) is a mechanical system for continuously drawing gas samples through tubes from multiple monitoring points located in an underground coal mine for analysis and display on the surface. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in collaboration with Signal Peak Energy (SPE), LLC, Bull Mountains No. 1 Mine, operated a TBS during mining of two bleederless, longwall panels. This paper describes the gas analysis data and its interpretation. As verified by the TBS, coal at the SPE mine tends to oxidize slowly. It was known that a reservoir of low-oxygen concentration atmosphere developed about 610 m (2,000 ft) behind the longwall face. A bleederless ventilation system facilitates formation of an inert atmosphere in this longwall gob and decreases the likelihood of spontaneous combustion. Connections of the mine atmosphere to the surface through subsidence cracks could allow airflow into the longwall gob, revive coal oxidation and increase spontaneous combustion risk. The atmospheric composition of the sealed areas was homogeneous, except in the immediate vicinity of suspected ingassing points. The TBS verified that gases within the partially sealed, bleederless longwall gob expanded into the longwall tailgate area when barometric pressure decreased. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the back return airflow at the longwall tailgate was observed to increase by a factor of three and possibly up to 10 times the typical background concentration of 0.5 to 1.0%, depending on the size of the longwall gob and the magnitude of barometric pressure decrease. TBS have the inherent disadvantage of slow response time due to travel time of the gas samples and sequential gas analyses. A TBS or similar continuous monitoring system could be beneficial in detecting and providing warning of potentially hazardous gas concentrations, if the slow response time of the system is always understood.
