Petro-diesel is a common collector for coal flotation, but the partitioning of diesel range organics (DROs) in process streams has not been widely studied. Preliminary research suggested that under normal dosing schemes total residual DRO contents in process waters should be limited to the sub-ppm water-soluble fraction (WSF). Further, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) should partition proportionately with DROs. The purpose of this study was to confirm these findings in laboratory flotation tests. Total DRO and specific PAH contents were measured in the waters associated with the concentrate and tailings streams. The results show that concentrate waters consistently had higher amounts of DROs than tailing waters. Moreover, the DRO contents in both streams generally increased with increasing diesel dosage. In line with preliminary research, DROs appeared to be limited to the WSF, and PAHs tended to partition proportionately with DROs. Under typical operating conditions, it appears that residual DROs should not present an environmental concern, but conditions should be avoided that allow significant overdosing of diesel.

Personnel at Utah Copper Division's Bingham Canyon Mine use current computing technology to compile pertinent production statistics and mining plans. Within hours after the day's work has been completed, concise reports summarizing the previous day's production statistics, actual production vs. budget statistics, the location of shovels relevant to the mining plan, the performance of equipment, equipment next scheduled for maintenance, etc. are available at the terminals located throughout the mine. Also, engineering personnel us e computerized systems, directly from their offices, to assist them in the timely development of mining plans. Timely and concise reporting and planning capabilities such as these assist mine personnel in their efforts to review mining progress and equipment performance, and as such they are in a better position to detect adverse trends early and to seek appropriate resources or make changes in plans or practices.

Merchants perform a number of functions in the copper market. As a major distribution arm of the copper industry, they secure scrap and other copper bearing materials for processing into usable refined shapes. These are ultimately sold to fabricators. Merchants ' hedging and arbitrage activities help keep values in proper relationship from product to product or region to region. Through these switching and trading operations, they optimize the flow of copper from mine to consumer. And finally, merchants act as a repository for copper units during times of surplus and a stockpile from which to draw during tines of shortage.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines conducted a multi-faceted geomechanics research project at a bump-prone longwall coal mine in eastern Kentucky. This mine presented a unique opportunity to study coal mine bumps in that the problem appeared to be confined to areas beneath a sandstone channel of limited areal extent. The Bureau's research plan sought to exploit the uniqueness of the site by monitoring strata behavior and longwall support reactions as the longwall face approached and passed beneath a sandstone channel. The study incorporated static pillar stress and strata deformation measurements, shield support leg pressure measurements, and microseismic monitoring as well as geologic mapping and the collection of observational data. Data collection was underway when a major coal bump occurred on the longwall face at the mine. Pillar behavior (load and deformation), shield loading, and microseismic activity were monitored prior to, during, and after the bump. Observations in the tailgate indicated that these pillars were failing prior to and after the face bump. Shield load data which were evaluated in an effort to identify trends which could be used to forecast coal bumps appear to provide a measure of the effectiveness of destressing operations conducted on the face (e.g. shot firing). Analyses of microseismic data revealed anomalous values associated with microseismic "energy" prior to the face bump. In addition, microseismic source location data and underground observations provided some insight as to the sequence of pillar and face bumps.

Extensive deposits of bituminous, subbituminous, and lignite coals occur in the western United States (Figure 1). Over one trillion tons of identified resources have been located and inferred by geologists and more than 200 million tons of western coal are mined annually (1). In the future, production of western coals will increase significantly and approach national production levels of higher-rank eastern coals. Western coals will be utilized in new power plants as a replacement fuel for oil and gas and may be used in advanced technologies such as diesel engines or in direct-fired turbines. Since these applications require low-ash, low-sulfur coals, crushing to fine sizes and significant cleaning to remove minerals and sulfur will be required. Coal cleaning traditionally has been associated with reducing pyrite and other mineral matter from high-rank eastern coals. To date, insignificant quantities of western coals have been cleaned before utilization and limited data on their washability characteristics exist. Because of this lack of data, it is difficult to predict how these coals will react to standard washing techniques.

Selective flocculation of iron ores is extremely sensitive to the type and the amount of soluble salts in pulp solutions. Chemical precipitation of alkaline earth ions combined with ultrasonic treatment deactivates their adverse effects without using any environmentally ill-defined reagents. The manner in which ultrasonic treatment affects starch adsorption on hematite, dissolution of quartz, and selective flocculation process was investigated. Selective flocculation tests were conducted in the presence of up to 400 ppm calcium ion on a quartz-hematite mixture by precipitation as calcium carbonate, and the role that silicate ion generated by ultrasonic treatment plays in achieving the selectivity of separation is discussed.

In Part I of this paper we describe two techniques that were employed in the development of mathematical descriptions of the size reduction process which takes place in a ball mill. In Part II we show how the comminution model was imbedded in a process model to effect steady-state and dynamic simulation of a closed-circuit grinding operation. Increasing emphasis is being placed on development of approaches whereby the essential characteristics of a process can be succinctly represented in terms of a mathematical description of the relationships that exist among important process variables. This activity, commonly known as mathematical modeling, predates modern electronic computers: however, these computers with their tremendous computational capability have given new impetus to the whole field. Although the computer is quite helpful in the development of mathematical models, the real value to the engineer lies in the fact that computers represent such a powerful tool for simulating systems described by mathematical models. As a consequence, engineers may simulate and thereby study the behavior of complex. interacting, systems over a broad range of process variables and configurations once appropriate process models have been developed for the sequence of steps comprising the process.

Echo Bay's Waste Management Program for its Lupin Mine was developed in response to the terms and conditions of the water license issued to the mine in 1981 by the Northwest Territories Water Board. The gold mine, located about 80 km (50 miles) south of the Arctic Circle, commenced production in 1982. The Waste Management Program was based originally on the total containment concept, contingent on future treatability testwork results indicating the best treatment method to ensure pond discharges would be in compliance with stated Northwest Territories Water Board discharge criteria. To assess the various treatment technologies, an investigative program was established to determine the most effective means for treating the tailings pond water. In the course of milling, about 850,000 m3 (11 million cu yd) of tailings are produced annually that require appropriate management to protect the environment. This annual tailings stream consists of about 175,000 m3 (229,000 cu yd) of solids and 675,000 m3 (883,500 cu yd) of water. Following the completion of the required waste management studies, a two-ponds-in-series concept of tailings impoundment was developed. To attain this concept, the tailings impoundment area would require modification and construction to enable the use of such a system.

Gold plant performance during the start-up period, which extends until capacity production is sustained, has a major impact on the internal rate of return and the net present value of gold projects regardless of mining and processing configurations. The start-up period experiences substandard production, extra expenses, and sometimes reduced recovery. This results in lost profits, a portion of which are recouped at the end of the life of the mine. Poor start-up performance can put projects into financial jeopardy. The gold mining industry regularly experiences start-ups ranging from good to poor. Problem areas, which affect start-up performance, include shortcomings in ore reserve sampling and testing, equipment design and installation, untrained plant operators, inability to cope with problems which arise, and organization of the maintenance program. An investment, equal to 0.5% to 1.0% of plant capital cost, in programs to prepare for start-up, in advance, is recommended. Investment in such a program will make a good start-up possible. Without it the best result which can normally be expected is a fair start-up. Developers of new gold mines are urged to compare the cost of this investment with the anticipated increase in project net present value. Funds for this investment should be included in feasibility studies.

The high copper grade in the Igarapé Bahia (Brazil) gold-copper ore restricts the direct application of the classical cyanidation process. Copper oxide and sulfide minerals react with cyanides in solution, causing high leach-reagent consumption, raising processing costs and decreasing gold recovery. According to studies, a feasible solution would be to pretreat the ore to remove copper minerals prior to cyanidation. The goal of this experimental work was to study the conditions for the removal of copper from the Igarapé Bahia gold-copper ore by sulfuric acid leaching, applying a statistical approach to the experimental design. By using the Plackett Burman method, it was possible to select the variables that exhibited the largest influence on copper extraction at the sulfuric acid leaching stage. These variables were leach solution temperature, stirring speed, sulfuric acid concentration in the leach solution and ore particle size. The individual effect of these variables and their interaction influences on the experimental response were analyzed by applying the replicated full-factorial design method. Finally, the selected variables were optimized by the ascending-path statistical method, which determined the best leach experimental conditions for maximum copper extraction. The process engineer is frequently requested to select equipment to separate brine from solids, In many cases, this is a more difficult task than the selection of most other pieces of process equipment because quite often the operation of the various types of debrining equipment cannot be predicted by calculations, One must rely to a great extent upon experience or empirical test work to predict performance - that is to say one must use a practical rather than a theoretical approach. This is not to say that the solutions to liquid-solids separating problems are wholly an art but rather it is to emphasize that the approach demands a fair knowledge of commercially available liquid-solids separating equipment, some background on the advantages and limitations of each type and in many cases might necessitate a fair amount of test work, or at least, a study of performance of equipment on similar applications.

"In 2017, one of the international authorities on coal bursts, Dr. Chris Mark, published a paper entitled “Coal Bursts that Occur during Development: A Rock Mechanics Enigma,” in which several relevant technical issues were identified, the most pertinent being:i.whilst development coal bursts are commonly associated with geological faults, understanding which specific faults result in burst-prone development mining conditions and why, remains undefined.ii.conventional wisdom in relation to strong roof and floor geology of the coal seam might be limiting, based on certain burst examples in Colorado.iii. development coal bursts can occur without the local ground stresses being substantially elevated from their in situ levels.This paper outlines what is considered to be a credible, first-principles, mechanistic explanation for these three current development coal burst conundrums by reference to early published coal testing work examining the significance of a lack of “constraint” to coal stability and an understanding of how very specific structural geology and other geological features can logically cause this to occur in situ, albeit on a statistically very rare basis. This basic model is examined by reference to published information pertaining to the development coal-burst that occurred at the Austar Coal Mine in New South Wales, Australia, in 2014 and from the Sunnyside District in Utah, USA.The “cause and effect” model for development coal bursts presented also offers a meaningful explanation for the statistical improbability for what are nonetheless potentially highly-destructive events, being able to explain the statistical rarity being just as important to the credibility of the model as explaining the local conditions associated with burst events.The model could also form the basis for a robust, risk-based approach utilising a “hierarchy of controls” to the operational management of the development coal burst threat. Specifically, these include the use of pre-mining predictions for likely burst-prone and non-burst-prone areas, the use of the mine layout to avoid or at least minimise mining within burst-prone areas if appropriate, and finally the development of an operational Trigger Action Response Plan that reduces the likelihood of inadvertent roadway development into a burst-prone area without suitable safety controls already being in place."

The industralized nations of the world have already established industries and economies which are greatly dependent upon the availability of energy. The underdeveloped and developing nations of the world are slowly and surely moving to the same utlimate requirements. The world wide need for distribution of energy sources is continuing to grow. At the present time there is a great imbalance between the sources of energy and the consuming economies In order to bring about greater equality between supply and demand major efforts and large capital expenditures are constantly being made. Industralized areas are seeking their own independent sources of energy whereas those areas of the world which contain great reserves of energy are limiting its export as well as developing its own industralized capacity. Nevertheless, energy bearing materials are still transported great distances in order to satiate the appetites of power hungry economies.

Dawsonite bearing oil shale of Colorado's Green River Formation offers a unique and vast (6.5 billion tons of Al2O3) resource of easily extractable alumina. The processing methods required by the thermal reactions dawsonite and its oil shale carrier also require production of shale oil, soda ash, and nahcolite as marketable coproducts. These production methods are presented. The alumina production process is contrasted with the Bayer process to describe technical advantages of extraction of alumina from oil shale which may offset the problems associated with processing a relatively lean ore. While alumina production from oil shale requires development of new technology, the technical problems appear solvable. Only the political problems arising from the now onerous and completely unnecessary Federal oil-shale withdrawal appear less solvable.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has previously established pillar design guidelines for the underground stone mining industry. These guidelines were created from an empirical database of pillar observations and were largely drawn from shallow, flat-lying mining operations. Current trends forecast a great amount of underground stone mines developing under deeper cover, higher seam dips, and more frequent multiple-seam mining configurations than in the past. The complex loading conditions and limited experience in these environments presents a substantial increased risk of ground failure. To investigate these loading conditions, NIOSH has installed a pillar and roof monitoring system at an underground limestone mine in central Pennsylvania. The mine is operating in a seam with dips ranging from 13 to 18 degrees and overburdens ranging from 275 m (900 ft) to 425 m (1,400 ft). Instrumentation installed in an undeveloped pillar and in surrounding strata is currently measuring pillar and roof behavior in response to stress redistribution during excavation. Laser scans are being used to measure ground displacement and changes in conditions associated with local mining conditions and significant geological features. Initial stress measurements show a gradual increase in stress in response to mining, and stress changes that correspond with blasts. The seismic system is operational, with calibration events signaling on each of the 18 sensors. INTRODUCTION Improving mine-wide ground control stability can help reduce the potential for catastrophic failure of underground structures. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted prior research in stone pillar design and has established fundamental pillar design guidelines for the underground stone mining industry, which resulted in the development of the S-Pillar program (Esterhuizen et al., 2011; Esterhuizen and Murphy, 2015). The data that constitute the S-Pillar program were derived from past mining experience that was almost exclusively drawn from shallow, flat-lying, single-level mining operations1. Stakeholder interactions with NIOSH researchers have indicated that increased numbers of underground stone operations are expected to mine under significantly deeper cover, with greater seam dips, and under multi-level operating conditions (Slaker and Murphy, 2016). The complex loading conditions and limited experience in these challenging environments present a substantial increased risk of ground failure. Inadequate pillar design in these new and challenging environments could result in catastrophic wide-area pillar collapses and an increased safety burden to miners working in the U.S. limestone mining industry. To develop design guidelines and prevent inadequate pillar designs for these challenging environments, NIOSH is currently conducting detailed pillar response investigations at case-study mine sites operating in challenging environments."

This paper presents a rock mechanics investigation of the time-dependent behavior of the rock immediately surrounding the excavation in a hypothetical one-entry coal mine based on the geology of the Illinois coalfields Research in the area of time-dependency is almost nonexistent and, therefore, this research was performed to make inroads into this neglected research area. Numerical analysis of a typical one-entry coal mine in an Illinois basin was performed using the commercial finite difference program FLAC3D. The immediate roof of the coal entry was assumed to be a shale formation. Shale in other formations has shown a tendency to creep with time. Therefore, in this study the authors modeled the shale in the roof using time-dependent characteristics. The input properties were taken from laboratory creep tests performed on shale. Model runs were performed at different stages, mimicking the progressive excavation of the entry. The model results showed that stresses in the roof attained the limit of yielding. Using Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria, potential zones of failure were also predicted. The results showed that the current computational capacities are sufficient to explore this previously uncharted territory of ground control.

This paper describes six basic stages between perception and production for a new sand and gravel deposit. Sand and gravel, like many of our natural resources, is taken for granted. It is assumed by John Q. Public that because sand and gravel is ubiquitous that it is available whenever and wherever needed - so long as it does not have to be mined in his neighborhood. This idea illustrates one of the enigmas of the industry, the fact that sand and gravel is abundant; however, its availability is another matter. Another problem is that this resource falls in the category of high volume, low profit materials; therefore, transportation costs are critical. Transportation roughly doubles the cost of these materials. It is not difficult to find sand and gravel, at least in Michigan. The problem is to locate a new source close to a market, near an adequate transport route (usually a highway) and in an area which will allow mining.

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to present a procedure used by the authors for evaluating and designing soil liner systems. This method is particularly valuable in evaluating various treatment schemes for chemically amended soil liners. A tabulation of laboratory test results on various soil types are presented to quantify the effectiveness of certain treatments. A typical liner design program includes developing and proving soil borrow sources, designing the cross-section of the liner system, developing construction specifications, and providing construction services to ensure the intended product is achieved. Material Source Development The first step in designing a soil liner is to identify and evaluate suitable borrow sources within an economical haulage range. This is best done in a two step approach: a reconnaissance level investigation to identify target areas and a detailed evaluation of those targets. Reconnaissance: The goal of the preliminary investigation is to locate potential borrow sources for liner quality soils. This includes all natural materials which can be compacted, chemically treated, or otherwise amended to yield an installed permeability at or below some target value. This requires utilization of all available data sources: Soil Conservation Service, BLM, aerial photos, USGS geologic maps, and project geologist records. The goal at this stage is to locate shallow deposits of favorable soil types. The Unified Soil Classification System provides an excellent first pass grouping. Clays, clayey sands and silts are the most favorable soil types, although silty sands and occasionally clayey gravels can make excellent liners, and are often amenable to chemical modification. The lowest permeabilities are generally achieved with CH, CL and MH soils. Once preliminary targets have been identified using visual examination, laboratory classification tests should be performed to further refine the selection. Testing at this stage should include gradation, plasticity and hydrometer analyses. Additionally, "preg-rob" testing should be done as early as practical. Preg-rob is a phenomenon where gold or silver ions in solution associate with the clay, or other, minerals. When this occurs, a portion of the gold or silver leached from the ore is actually tied-up by the clay and thus a reduces recovery. Testing for this consists of agitating a small sample of the soil in a solution containing dissolved gold or silver, preferably of similar chemical make-up as the solution which will contact the actual liner. The solution and soil are assayed before and after agitation to determine loss to the clay. A reliable estimate of the hydraulic conductivity, commonly referred to as permeability, can be developed from the D10 value by the use of Hezen's formula: K = 100 (D1012 This relationship is limited to soils where the finer particles do not move due to the force of flowing water (i.e.: "hydrodynamic stabilitym)(1). Additionally, the effect of platty particles on permeability is not as predictable as the effect of equidimensional particles. D10 is the sieve opening size at which 10% of the material is finer. Plasticity is also important from several standpoints. Constructability is directly related to plasticity. Very plastic clays and non-plastic silts both tend to be difficult soils, while medium plastic clays and clayey sands are generally very desirable. Post construction performance is also related to plasticity (e.g. swelling, shrinkage cracking, frost heave, etc.). Additionally, low plasticity silts and silty sands generally do not respond well to chemical amendment. Source Development: The result of the reconnaissance evaluation should be an estimate of the relative probability of developing a suitable borrow source within an economical haul distance. Of course, "economical distance" depends on the degree of handling and treatment the borrow material requires, as well as the cost of synthetic alternatives. The purpose of the detailed investigation is to prove out quantity and quality of material sources, and determine design parameters such as degree of compaction, mixing, treatment and thickness of liner. The emphasis of the testing program should be permeability and strength. Strength becomes increasingly important as the slope of the liner and the height of the heap increase. The reliable performance of the coal reclaim system is essential to the continued availability of a coal-fired electric generating unit. The control of fugitive coal dust within the areas housing the reclaiming equipment is necessary not only to minimize maintenance and clean-up costs, but is also a safety and health consideration. This paper describes the reclaim system control and dust suppression systems as initially installed, the shortcomings of these systems and the steps eventually taken to correct these shortcomings.

The basic theme of this symposium and panel Is Rotation Pads: Are They Optimized? There Is a. reason for phrasing the title In the form of a question. There Is not only the technical competency which we must address; there Is the operating philosophy that must be evaluated on the part of both the customer and the supplier. Customers desire reagents which are trouble-free and capable of providing that extra amount of selectivity or recovery. When they receive ft, after the supplier has provided several years of Internal research, one of the first concerns/complaints Is the price of the product. This has a tendency to rapidly reduce a supplier's support level In the future. Suppliers are equally guilty from another perspective. When they approach a customer to Introduce a product, they often attempt to market by offering only a price Incentive. They then wonder why a customer doesn't respond Immediately to the incentive. They are often oblivious to the fact that the reagent cost is such a minor aspect of the operating budget, and the customer has many more pressing problems on a day-to-day basis In comparison to the reagent cost. We need to establish the understanding that reagent cost Is an Inconsequential cost of operation, and yet has such a disproportionately high Impact on the success of the entire operation. This understanding Is required by both the customer and the supplier. We say to each other,' why are we discussing this since this has been obvious for some time?' The reason is relatively simple in that we talk about it, acknowledge it, and yet we do not adhere to it. The supplier provides a product along with test data containing statistics, analysis, recovery, grade and cost calculations while most of the time ignoring the operating technique which must be applicable In the plant In order to optimize the product. He expects the reagent to be substituted In the plant for the existing reagent and ft works or does not work after trying several variables. The operating management Is equally guilty, In order to best explain this to both the customer and the supplier, ft becomes necessary to review the basic purpose of the major reagents utilized In flotation. A collector is basically to Impact selective, maximum water repellency on the surface of a particular mineral, The frother has the purpose of providing a chemically stabilized membrane on the surface of the bubble at the air-water interphase. This, then, provides a host environment for the attachment of the collector-coated mineral to a bubble. The depressant functions In the reverse of the collector and must demonstrate the same or greater degree of selectivity than expected of a collector. The key area which has been Ignored Is the rate by which these reactions occur and Interrelate. This has a very specific effect on the operating technique and the compatibility of the chemistry, equipment, and the operator himself. Researchers, suppliers, and customers provide reams of data to demonstrate how their products or design produce, for example, higher kinetics, more selectivity, or more recovery. The Information is often true. After all, we are all learned men and laboratory and actual plant data do not lie. However, we must remember the theme of this symposium and panel: Flotation Plants: Are They Optimized? and Optimizing of Flotation Reagents? The direct, honest comment to the two titles is very simple. OF COURSE THEY ARE NOT The plants, equipment, and reagents had better not be optimized or else we are in trouble. The Issue of this panel discussion is to approach this subject from a slightly different or perhaps mainly Ignored aspects of optimizing reagents in flotation. When we have reagents which provide higher kinetics, more selectivity, and better recovery, how do we use them? Since each reagent has a different physical characteristics of froth, rate of recovery, volume effect on the compatibility of equipment, and many more aspects too numerous to mention, the question which has been severely Ignored Is, 'What degree of study and cooperation by both the supplier and the operating management has been conducted In order to prepare the operator for maximizing the performance of a reagent In relation to the rest of the system?" Prior to testing a new reagent, how much time Is spent to bring the actual operator(s) Into the program to make them feel part of the program? How much time is spent explaining to the operator on the float floor how to possibly take advantage of a reagent with faster kinetics or one which Is Inherently more selective? What
