The MODSIM mineral processing plant simultor is used to find optimal combinations of target separation specific gravities in a typical modem coal washing plant. A plant that is set up with these optimal targets can deliver up to 10% more yield at the same ash content as the same plant set up with separation targets chosen by conventional methods. MODSIM is the only simulator currently available that can simulate the liberation of pyrite and other mineral matter during open- and closed-circuit grinding operations. The simulator can therefore be used to assess the benefits of grinding operations in the flowsheet.

Industrial Minerals commodity profiles are continued from May's Annual Review issue. Diatomite G. Coombs, Manville Sales Corp. Growth in US diatomite production continued to lag in 1986. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that 580 kt (640,000 st) were produced last year. This is a 1%0 growth over 1985. The cumulative growth from the 1982 low point is 4.4%. Present production, though, is still only 90% of the high tonnage of 1979. The industry will see increased competitive activity with the start-ups of two new mines and production facilities in California and Oregon. US production has come primarily from Lompoc, CA, Bassalt, Clark Station, and Lovelock, NV, and Quincy, WA. New production, probably with capacities of 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) each, have started near Burney, CA, and Vale, OR. Eagle Picher's new, full-line filter aid and filler plant at Celatom, Vale, OR, was dedicated in August. The plant uses diatomite from the Celatom mining district in Juntura, OR. Grefco's new filter aid and filler plant near Burney, CA, was ready in July. It produced flux calcined products through a single kiln and can handle both bag and bulk shipments. The operations are in Shata County with the plant and mine at the same site. Manville Specialties Group is moving its Filtration and Minerals Division headquarters and research staffs to Lompoc, CA. The move is intended to strengthen response and performance by locating research, marketing, and production close together. Diatomite is processed in three methods: natural, calcined, and flux calcined. The natural is dried to remove water and is particle size classified. Calcined or straight calcined products have been sintered to modify particle size or permeability. Flux calcination, or flux sintering, has a stronger influence on permeability and also benefits color. The unique structure of diatomite is used in a range of particle sizes from fine paint fillers, to coarser filter aids, to granular aggregates. Dimension stone L. Meade, Geomapping Associates Ltd. 1986 was another good year for dimension stone production. The trend toward using marble, granite, limestone, sandstone, and slate has created an increasing demand. According to US Bureau of Mines 1986 estimates, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of dimension stone, with a value of $173 million, was produced by 200 companies. This is an increase from 1985, where 220 companies produced 1 Mt (1.12 million st) valued at $172 million. The increased production volume and decreased unit value is due to the competition from imports. The net import reliance in 1986 was 68% compared to 62% in 1985. The value of imports was $374 million in 1986 versus $295 million the year before. In an effort to maintain their market share, domestic finishers, particularly in the granite industry, continued to upgrade plants and machinery during 1986. In addition, offshore dollars have financed a number of fabricating facilities in North America that will finish imported rough stock. It is hoped that this increased domestic production capability will capitalize on a devalued US dollar. The trend has been for growth in stone usage and market. This trend is continuing with increased public awareness and desire for natural stone in buildings. The area of greatest market growth is expected to be in residential and interior decorative stone usage. Use of sophisticated, automated equipment has made the cost more affordable. Now lobbies, foyers, and specialty rooms are being clad in stone. Dolomite J. Welshimer, National Lime & Stone Co. About three-quarters of dolomite production is used as construction aggregates and 10% to 20% is sold or used as an industrial mineral. Total limestone and dolomite consumed for chemical and metallurgical purposes is about 136 Mt/a (150 million stpy). Sales of industrial dolomitic products were somewhat stronger in 1986 than levels recorded in the early 1980s. Some of the sales' strength, however, can be attributed to reductions in the number of active mining and processing operations. The industry will probably undergo further consolidation by the end of this decade. This will be due primarily to the continued softening in demand by the steel industry. Dolomitic limestone deposits being mined for raw materials for the steel, glass, and refractory in¬dustries are generally 54% calcium carbonate and 45% magnesium carbonate by weight. Impurities composed of silicon, aluminum, iron, sulfur, and phosphorous, represent less than 1%. The heaviest concentration of high purity, surface mineable dolomite in the US is in northwestern Ohio. Crushed and sized dolomitic limestone is a basic raw material for the iron and steel industry. The Bright water Conveyance System includes 21 km of tunnels mined by two earth pressure balance Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and two slurry TBMs. The probabilistic baseline approach defined in the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) can representatively be verified by use of a comprehensive tracking system to identify face conditions that allows comparison with the baselines. The glacial geology includes a high lateral variation in soil types that, when combined with the pressurized face tunneling methods, creates challenges for documenting face conditions. Baseline tracking using spoil samples and TBM operational parameters provides information to document actual conditions and support resolution of differing site condition claims.

A precious metals refinery’s switch to personal computer-based, three-dimensional piping design saved many hours in the design of a South African precious metals refinery. Bateman Minerals and Industrial provided engineering, procurement and construction management services for Impala Platinum Limited-Refineries’ new $60 million refinery in Springs, South Africa. This project is one of the largest platinum refineries in the world. Bateman evaluated a new design method during this project that involved developing a three-dimensional model for the project. The new method saved time by reducing the man-hours required to generate complete project documentation, including plans, sections, isometrics and material takeoffs. The new method also saved design and construction time by allowing designers to detect clashes before construction began.

The rapid development of the global alumina and aluminum industry is straight coupled with the demands and the needs of these materials. Nowadays, the only well-known accessible resources to produce alumina and aluminum are bauxite ores. But bauxite ores are limited, and the remaining exploitable reserves do not have high contents in alumina. In countries where there is little or no bauxite reserves or where the recovery of existing bauxite ores to produce alumina with the Bayer process are not economic, alternative resources for alumina have been explored. The most attractive resources for replacing bauxites are aluminosilicate clay minerals and coal fly ash. The important processes developed for the recovery of alumina from these sources are acid leaching and alkaline leaching processes. The acid leaching is known as the most efficient in which thermal and mechanical activation are included for improving the performance of the process. The objective of this review is to give a comprehensive insight on the production of the alumina from thermally or mechanically activated clays and coal fly ash by hydrochloric, sulfuric, and nitric acid leaching processes.

The characteristics of the igneous and metamorphic bedrock, extra-hard and abrasive, of the Guadarrama Tunnels, a bi-tube project of length 28.4 km without any intermediate attack, are first commented upon. Next, a detailed discussion is given of the most relevant aspects of the performance of the four double shield type TBMs. The experience of this leads to various recommendations to be borne in mind in future designs of TBM having to work in rock of similar characteristics.

[ ] In November 2005, Essroc Cement, part of the Italcementi Group, commissioned a long overland conveyor at their Nazareth plant in Pennsylvania. This conveyor, tagged CV-105, was designed to transport 1000 tph of limestone from the quarry to the kiln, and 400 tph of hot clinker (at 300°F) at back from the kiln to a handling facility about halfway back. Conveyor CV-105 is 8969 ft (2733 m) long. It gains 152 ft (46 m) of elevation in the first 1570 ft (480 m), then is mostly flat for the remaining 7400 ft (2250 m) (Figure 1). After the limestone is discharged at the head pulley, hot clinker is loaded onto the return side of the belt. This clinker can be discharged at one of two locations.

When pumping abrasive slurry mixtures, special attention must be given to pump design and construction. The second article in this two-part series describes some design features to consider when selecting centrifugal slurry pumps. Hydraulic Design Most centrifugal pumps are conventionally designed to achieve the desired hydraulic performance at the highest efficiency and lowest cost when handling clear fluids in reasonably clean environments. Manufacturing limitations are not imposed on the configuration of the pump, since conventional materials such as cast iron, bronze, and stainless steel are used. Manufacturers and buyers usually select the highest specific speed commensurate with the lowest cost attainable. Part life is almost infinite. When a centrifugal pump is designed for slurry service, the important factors in pump design are wear and materials of construction; size and efficiency assume lesser importance. The pump must operate at low rotational speed and the impeller has to be a truly radial flow design. These factors immediately determine that the pump must be of a low specific speed design in the range of 600 to 1800. The specific speed is a type number that is constant for all geometrically similar pumps; it designates the geometry of the impeller and casing. [ ] where n = rpm, Q = flow (US gpm), H = total head (ft), and Ns = specific speed. Since wear is a function of velocity it can be shown that for a given head and capacity, wear will increase with increased Ns. Centrifugal Pump Casing The casing has a profound effect on performance. If designed incorrectly it can destroy a large part of the energy given to the flow by the impeller, resulting in low efficiency, high hydraulic forces, and excessive wear on both the casing and impeller. In a conventional spiral volute, the static pressure around the impeller is uniform only when there is a free vortex velocity distribution in the volute, i.e., when the spiral flow from the impeller coincides with that of the volute spiral. This occurs only at the best efficiency point (BEP), between the pump's best operating zone and over capacity zone. Departure from the free vortex velocity distribution in the volute at partial or over capacities produces circumferential pressure gradients at the impeller periphery, which is directly proportional to the specific gravity of the mixture being pumped. At partial or over capacities, the flow will not tolerate the abrupt deflection at the tongue and severe energy losses and wear are created near the casing throat and on the impeller. Concentric and semi-concentric volute designs produce uniform static pressures at the impeller periphery and make the pump, much less sensitive to "off"' BEP operation. Hydraulic forces and wear are considerably reduced-eliminating the tongue prevents abrupt deflection of the flow, turbulence is minimized, and the velocity in the casing volute and throat is reduced. Good efficiency is sustained over a wider operating hand. Casings of this design are easy to cast. • Spiral volute (conventional)-Radius to the outer periphery of the casing and the volute area constantly increases. • Semi-concentric casing-Radius to the outer periphery of the casing and volute area remain constant within a certain angle. • Concentric casing-Radius to the outer periphery of the casing and volute area remain constant through 360°. The degree of concentricity must be reconciled with efficiency, hydraulic radial load, and wear for each specific speed chosen. Up to 1200 Ns the casings can be fully concentric without sacrificing too much efficiency. Above 1200 Ns, the casings can be semi-concentric. The angle of concentricity

Between 1989 and 2004 the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA)constructed several major wastewater and water tunnels associated with three major projects in the Boston area of eastern Massachusetts. There were many similarities and differences in the bedrock conditions encountered and among the contractual approaches for these independent projects. Through a clarification of the approach similarities and analysis of the contract differences, this paper addresses and presents what are considered to be valuable lessons learned. In doing so, the paper follows the evolution of such disparate issues as contract conditions, baseline reports and dispute review boards. The authors believe that the lessons learned even represent what, in certain cases, could be referred to as “universal truths” that are intended to have application to the next generation of tunneling contracts.

Airborne respirable dust levels on longwalls can be reduced if operators approach the dust control problem in a logical and fundamental manner. This can be accomplished through the proper application and continued use of effective dust control techniques. The Bureau of Mines is currently assessing the effectiveness of longwall dust control techniques in use today to provide mine operators with guidelines for selecting the most appropriate control technology. This paper presents a fundamental approach to the problem of shearer dust control. Three dust control techniques to be discussed are: deep cutting/increased pick penetration for reducing the amount of respirable dust generated; drum water sprays/improved water supply system to suppress the amount of airborne respirable dust; and improved external water spray system, the "shearer-clearer," to push the dust close to the face. The techniques have been evaluated in field trials and have been shown to be both practical and effective in applications to control shearer generated dust.

In this decade of the 1.970's it is forecast that eight billion cubic yards of rock will be excavated from 400, 000 miles of new tunnels, drifts and other underground workings in the western world, according to estimates in a report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It is expected that the cost of this work will be in excess of $54 billion in constant 1970 dollars. Most of this underground excavation will be in mining -- 97% of the tunnel length and 89% of the volume - -the balance in construction. In addition to this huge excavating task, in the 18 developed nations of OECD, will be projects in the Communist Bloc and in the developing nations. Underground excavation requires the successful completion of three principle activities: A. Break -- to free rock from the solid work face. B. Remove-- to clear the work area of broken rock. C. Support -- to assure stability of rock surrounding the underground excavation and to eliminate risk of rock collapse. In today's fully mechanized excavation systems, continuous miners, roadheaders or tunnel borers, (A) break the rock loose from the face, and (B) remove broken rock with their mucking devices and load it onto belt conveyors, mine cars, trucks, or any other appropriate haulage system for disposal. Numerical modeling was used to design the pillars and bolting plan for a mine with weak roof and multi-seam stress condition. Previous mining experience, pillar/roof yielding and in-situ horizontal stress were considered in the models. By modeling the upper seam yielding and vertical stress transfer, a multi-seam influence zone was obtained. Appropriate pillar sizes were designed for conditions with and without upper seam stress influences. Roof support for the track and belt entries, using fully-grouted resin bolts and cable bolts, was proposed and implemented in the model. The bolting plan was evaluated under the weak roof condition.

The NC State University Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) and Waste Reduction Partners (WRP) of the Land of Sky Regional Council joined efforts in 2000 to initiate a technically sound and practical program for the management of high-volume coal combustion by-products (CCBs) in North Carolina. The accumulation of CCBs from coal burning boilers throughout the state of North Carolina posed a substantial storage problem, and the area was overripe for an effective management program, which would be environmentally sustainable. In particular, the public utility generators had filled storage ponds on their properties, and the storage overload had grown to critical proportions. Much the same situation existed for paper mill biosolids, which were stored on site in landfill cells along with daily output of CCBs from the mill boilers. A conversion process via the patented pyro-process12 (US Patent No. 5,342,442) to produce synthetic light weight aggregates (LWA) from CCBs and paper mill sludge was conceived to process large quantities of both these waste materials. MRL and WRP initiated and formed a consortium that brought together academia, private industry and state agencies to evaluate the production of LWA by the pyro-process. The industry partners included representatives from the power companies, industrial ash generators, expediters for coal ash products, as well as concrete block manufacturers. It was important to welcome interested parties from not only the western North Carolina area and other parts of the state but also from neighboring states including Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia. Membership of this consortium evolved during the intervening years to include the following participants and supporters: Progress Energy Carolinas; Duke Energy; Santee Cooper; Full Circle Solutions; Land-of-Sky Regional Council; NC Department of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance; Ecusta Business Development Center; Blue Ridge Paper Products; Jackson Paper and Manufacturing Company; Miller Perlite; Appalachian Products; General Shale Brick; Metromont Materials; Small Business Technology Development Center of the University of North Carolina system and North Carolina State University The initial development program conducted at the Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) was to formulate an acceptable LWA product, which fulfilled user specifications for light weight concrete block and structural concrete application. Support work and program coordination efforts were furnished by retired technical volunteers in WRP. The work advanced steadily, using proven technologies well established in the mineral industry, to generate a very satisfactory LWA. The consortium then concluded that a more comprehensive CCB conversion program would have more appeal for full scale manufacture and commercialization, if a variety of products from CCB separation were generated. This product assortment would include bottom ash, low carbon fly ash, recovered carbon of high purity, as well as the synthetic LWA. The bottom ash would serve the concrete block market, the fly ash was in demand for ready-mix concrete, and the high carbon product could be pelletized and used as a fuel for reburn or by the steel industry, and the LWA was a sought-after component for light weight concrete applications. After scouting all these potential markets and finding them to be viable, the consortium then inaugurated an integrated pilot plant program for the CCB separation and conversion. The plan was organized in three (3) parts: (1) Phase I ? bench scale evaluation studies (2) Phase II continuous pilot plant evaluation and (3) Phase III ? conceptual commercial plant design including marketing efforts and attraction of business entrepreneurs to build a full scale manufacturing plant. Phase II would serve to validate the process in a continuous mode and produce substantial quantities of products for preliminary marketing efforts and for demonstration-of-use purposes. The consortium agreed to the name, CAROLINA ASH PRODUCTS, (CAP), for the integrated pilot plant program. The products generated might be designated with the CAP label as: bottom ash would be named CAP Granules, low carbon fly ash would become CAP Ash, recovered high carbon product would be CAP Carbon, and LWA would have the name CAP Stone. Phase II of the program processed 20 tons (18 t) of ponded ash from Progress Energy storage at a rate of 600 lb (271 kg) of raw ash per hour with favorable results. PRELIMINARY STUDIES Prior to committing laboratory research and development effort as well as support and coordination activities to this program, it was necessary to determine (1) the level of need for a freshly launched CCB reutilization program in this state and (2) what degree of versatility was necessary for such a process. State agency records and a survey of recent boiler operations indicated that in the state of North Carolina at least 77 facilities manage CCBs from their boiler operations. Despite continuing development efforts in more eastern parts of the state, the use of CCBs for commercial applications has not increased to a level which alleviates the need to store vast quantities in private monofills on the generator?s property. More than 1.25 million tons (1.13 million t) of CCBs are landfilled in NC annually, with 300,000 tons (271,985 t) per year generated in western NC alone. Many different boiler types, which span both very old units and those that are modern and efficient, were to be found. These included stoker-fired units, pulverized coal boilers, slag-tap furnaces, and fluidized bed combustion boilers covering a range of sizes. Any systems designed to separate CCB components from all these sources and convert them to useful secondary products would need broad processing latitude and flexibility. Up to the present there has been a paucity of research done in the western part of the state to find productive alternatives to storage in landfills. With tipping fees in our largest landfill now approaching $40 per ton ($44 per t) and escalating transportation fees (about $200 per truckload up to 40 tons, traveling a distance of 25 miles), the problem has become urgent both economically and ecologically. A well-designed, integrated wet process for CCB separation into value-added products had much potential to be less expensive than landfilling as well as to provide saleable materials with acceptable profit margins. These preliminary investigations also revealed that other major waste streams, in particular paper mill sludge and municipal and animal waste biosolids were important candidates for priority attention. Since these biosolids could furnish the organic component of a synthetic LWA product, they could be consumed as part of the same program. This added interest value to a growing list of partners to support and participate in the program.

INTRODUCTON James Howden first secured an order for two Service Tunnel Boring machines in November 1986. These Tunnel Boring machines were 5.7 and 5.4 metres in diameter and the full length including back up was 215 metres. Manufacture commenced in December 1986 at the Glasgow factories of James Howden & Company with the deliveries to site of the machines in September 1987 and March 1988 respectively. In December 1987 two further orders were secured for the land running tunnels at 8.7 metres diameter. This paper presents some of the challenges in building tunnel boring machines for the Eurotunnel project between Britain and France. The general specifications of the Tunnel Boring machines and length of drives are shown in Appendix 1. DESIGN PARAMETERS The specification given by the Consortium TML on behalf of their client Eurotunnel cleary indicated that cutting of the face should be concurrent with the building of the precast concrete lining rings. Located on the Wabash River in the central portion of the state, the city of Lafayette, IN is relatively small compared to most cit-ies that incorporate tunnels into their combined sewer overflow (CSO) systems. The original CSO plan for the city was to replace two aging lift stations that were built in the 1950s. The original con-cept was to build a new sewer using conventional cut-and-cover construction to eliminate one of the lift stations ? the Parking Lot Lift Station ? and build a new regionalized one at the location of the Pearl River Lift Station. The initial sewer design was sized just to handle the flow that would eliminate the Parking Lot Lift Station. The planning for this project was being developed as part of the city?s CSO long-term control plan (LTCP) that focused on reducing the overflows from the city?s 14 overflow points. However, during the development of the CSO LTCP, a major industrial user indicated it would be increasing its flows to the system, which required additional conveyance capacity to meet the city?s CSO LTCP. After reviewing the design concepts with city representatives during the planning phase of the project, the mayor indicated that he wanted to minimize impacts to downtown businesses; therefore, trenchless alternatives were considered. The last piece of the puzzle that drove the project away from a small diameter pipeline was discovered during a flow monitoring program to collect flow data for the CSO LTCP project. This study revealed a major restriction in the 100-year-old Pearl River Trunk Sewer, located beneath four active railroad tracks. To eliminate this flow restriction, provide more overflow storage and reduce the impact to local businesses, a new 2.7- to 3.6-m- (9- to 12-ft-) diameter tunnel sewer became the most viable solution.

Amsterdam City Council is building a new metro line, the North–South Line. The line passes under Amsterdam Central Station (a listed building) about 18m below street level. The retaining wall that has to be built underneath the existing building is an innovative construction consisting of two rows of steel piles interspersed with a solid mass of overlapping jet grout columns: a composite ‘sandwich’ wall. This paper gives an overview of the approach taken to designing (computational models) and building the retaining wall. Special attention is paid to the observational method used for the construction of the jet grout columns.

INTRODUCTION The headrace tunnel in Amlach is part of a hydro electric power scheme near the city of Lienz in south west Austria. The project is owned and developed by Tiroler Wasserkraftwerke AG, the regional electrical supply utility. The construction work was divided into seven contracts for the entire scheme. The power output will be 60 MW, this being developed from a head of 370 m and water flows of 20 m3/s. The water will be tapped from the river Drau and lead through a 22 km long headrace on the south side of the Puster valley through the Lienzer Dolomiten mountain range. Contract No. 4, which is a joint venture between Mayreder, Züblin, Strabag, Rella and Innerebner, involves the construction of 13.5 km of the headrace. It was decided to bore this from one single adit, which probably makes it the longest pressure tunnel driven from one side by a TBM. (See Fig. 1.) For the tunnelling an Atlas Copco Jarva MK 12 TBM was chosen. The excavation diameter is 3.90 m, with the final lined diameter being in the range of 3.20 to 3.40 m. The back-up is a 145 m long single track rail system supplied by Mühlhäuser (Germany). Side-tipping cars with a capacity each of 8.2 m were used for removing the muck. One California switch was attached to the back-up after 3,000 m, and a second fixed switch was installed after 8,000 m of boring. 3 m long
