Amsterdam City Council is building a new metro line, the North–South Line. The line passes under Amsterdam Central Station (a listed building) about 18m below street level. The retaining wall that has to be built underneath the existing building is an innovative construction consisting of two rows of steel piles interspersed with a solid mass of overlapping jet grout columns: a composite ‘sandwich’ wall. This paper gives an overview of the approach taken to designing (computational models) and building the retaining wall. Special attention is paid to the observational method used for the construction of the jet grout columns.

INTRODUCTION The headrace tunnel in Amlach is part of a hydro electric power scheme near the city of Lienz in south west Austria. The project is owned and developed by Tiroler Wasserkraftwerke AG, the regional electrical supply utility. The construction work was divided into seven contracts for the entire scheme. The power output will be 60 MW, this being developed from a head of 370 m and water flows of 20 m3/s. The water will be tapped from the river Drau and lead through a 22 km long headrace on the south side of the Puster valley through the Lienzer Dolomiten mountain range. Contract No. 4, which is a joint venture between Mayreder, Züblin, Strabag, Rella and Innerebner, involves the construction of 13.5 km of the headrace. It was decided to bore this from one single adit, which probably makes it the longest pressure tunnel driven from one side by a TBM. (See Fig. 1.) For the tunnelling an Atlas Copco Jarva MK 12 TBM was chosen. The excavation diameter is 3.90 m, with the final lined diameter being in the range of 3.20 to 3.40 m. The back-up is a 145 m long single track rail system supplied by Mühlhäuser (Germany). Side-tipping cars with a capacity each of 8.2 m were used for removing the muck. INTRODUCTON James Howden first secured an order for two Service Tunnel Boring machines in November 1986. These Tunnel Boring machines were 5.7 and 5.4 metres in diameter and the full length including back up was 215 metres. Manufacture commenced in December 1986 at the Glasgow factories of James Howden & Company with the deliveries to site of the machines in September 1987 and March 1988 respectively. In December 1987 two further orders were secured for the land running tunnels at 8.7 metres diameter. This paper presents some of the challenges in building tunnel boring machines for the Eurotunnel project between Britain and France. The general specifications of the Tunnel Boring machines and length of drives are shown in Appendix 1. DESIGN PARAMETERS The specification given by the Consortium TML on behalf of their client Eurotunnel cleary indicated that cutting of the face should be concurrent with the building of the precast concrete lining rings. In order to do this a telescopic machine was thought to be the best solution. Ground conditions were described as chalk marls of homogeneous nature with the possibility of friable areas and some revelling. Air flow patterns in the face area of a room-and-pillar mining are critical for understanding the dust dispersion characteristics and for developing engineering controls. SIUC has previously performed a CFD study to analyze the airflow patterns in the face area when continuous miner is making a straight cut. Results from this study identified low air velocity and re-circulation zones in the face area and illustrated the significance of line curtain, and scrubber operation on the air flow patterns. This paper discusses similar analyses when continuous miner is making a right turn cut as it is considered to be the dustiest cut among all the cuts made to advance an entry through a crosscut. This paper presents results for box-cut development for a right hand turn x-cut. This paper also addresses line curtain advance and air leakage through the curtain on the airflow patterns in the face area for such a cut. Low air velocity and recirculation zones were identified by analyzing the velocity vectors.

The Gilt Edge Superfund Site is a former heap-leach gold mine that currently is being remediated in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Mine runoff water is treated before release from the site. The field pH, before treatment, is about 3, and the water contains arsenic and some heavy metals, in addition to sulfate concentrations of about 1400 to 1500 mg/L. In the Keystone area of the Black Hills, naturally occurring arsenic has been detected in ground-water samples from wells. Keystone City Well #4, which is not used currently, showed arsenic concentrations of 36 parts per billion (ppb) and sulfate concentrations of about 19 mg/L. With field samples of water from these sites, a limestone-based method was successful in reducing arsenic and heavy metals concentrations. The results are significant because previous research with the limestone-based method mainly had involved samples prepared with distilled water in the laboratory, in which interference of other ions such as sulfate did not occur. The research indicates the potential for broader field applications of the limestone-based removal method.

The upgrading project for two hydropower plants in Slovenia, Europe, requires two new pressure tunnels: Plave II (5.9 km Flysch) and Doblar II (3.6 km Limestone). It is the worldwide largest application of the Double-Shield TBM technology combined with an extremely thin-walled monoshell honeycomb lining system. The first drive has been completed by end of June 2000 achieving best performances of 50m/d and almost 1,100m/mth. In September 2000 the TBM started the second tunnel without any required adjustments due to geological or other reasons. Another 52m/d have been bored already within one production day of two 8 h shifts achieving a maximum penetration rate of more than 6m/h. The completion of the Doblar drive can be expected by February 2001.

"The large extent of global production and consumption of aggregates from quarries, grabs one´s attention and makes its substantial and essential standpoint in the world today pretty clear. A great amount of aggregates is utilized in civil engineering applications such as road construction, railway industry, concrete production, etc. Considering this fact that igneous rocks display a higher strength and abrasion resistance, this type of rock is preferred in the field of civil engineering. For all these applications, rock quality assurance is a key factor and certainly unavoidable, and it has great influence on the quality of constructions in civil engineering. One of the major problems encountered by both the producers and users of igneous rock is the fact that, with the passage of time, some specific rocks lose their strength, up to a complete loss of structure or in other words, their disintegration and degradation. In the last decades, different methods and procedures such as Glycol test, methylene blue dye test, as well as the Los Angeles test have been introduced to distinguish these rock properties, and to identify these problems. However, as these methods are time consuming, hard to perform, only to be applied to hand-piece samples, requiring special laboratory equipments, and only possible to be accomplished under laboratory conditions, their application has always been limited to some specific cases, and they are neither recommendable nor advantageous. In addition, these methods provide partially different results for the same rock. To address this widespread quality management problem of the quarry industry, a relatively quick, easy and user-friendly approach is necessary. It calls for a systematic solution with a device that can simply be used day to day in a mine for quality control of the quarry´s daily production. This scientific research is concentrated on developing a systematic method for early recognition and diagnosis of rock quality, in order to control and manage the quality of the quarry production in advance. This method was developed, based on the procedure of the magnetic susceptibility measurement. The obtained values can lead to valuable information regarding the quality of the rock and allows the quality control process to be accomplished and performed at the borehole location. This approach has been assessed through extensive field and laboratory studies. A detailed and comprehensive discussion will be made on the results of the experiments. The advantages and impacts of the application of this method, on increasing the reserves and environmental protection are also discussed."

Upbeat, surprisingly so, might describe the mood at the2002 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Phoenix, AZ. More than 4,000 mineral professionals gathered for three days of education, networking and product perusal. The Annual Meeting featured the theme, “Minerals for the Future@ SME” at the Feb. 25-27 gathering. Meeting attendance reached 4,039along with 479 exhibit booths show-casing 325 companies. Exhibitors found a good mix of industry types:37% from mining, 19% from processing, 20% from manufacturing and 28% from environment, education and government.

Introduction The intent of this paper is to present the general strategy and method of implementation to achieve a "fast-track" mine development. The major objectives of a "fast-track" or rapid development schedule are to minimize front-end development expenditures and to realize an early cash flow from operations. The Borealis project of Houston International Minerals Corp. (HIMCO) is used as the working example to illustrate the development schedule. Borealis is a 2.3 kt/d (2,500 stpd) gold-silver heap leach operation near Hawthorne, NV, Pre-Feasibility Planning Proper early planning and identification of priority items were necessary to expedite project progress. On April 1, 1978, HIMCO leased the rights to the Borealis prospect and initiated exploration activities almost immediately. Since Borealis was showing excellent potential for mine development, an effort to clear the way environmentally was initiated during the summer of 1979. With the Borealis properties located within the Toiyabe National Forest, the US Forest Service (USFS) was recognized as the "lead" or respon¬sible agency for addressing the environmental issues. Early scoping of the environmental issues by both HIMCO and the USFS allowed HIMCO to take the initiative and address two potentially critical issues-archaeological and biological. Third party consultants, agreed upon by HIMCO and the USFS, were contracted to conduct archaeological and biological surveys. Desert Research Institute of Reno, NV, provided archaeological services, and JFL & Associates of Boulder, CO, provided biological services. These efforts began in the fall of 1979 and continued through the summer of 1980. Conservative Design Criteria By adoption of conservation design criteria, flowsheets and processing data required for detail engineering were firmly established with a minimum of impact on schedule. On Oct. 21, 1980, HIMCO formally initiated a feasibility study to evaluate the Borealis project. Four organizations were contracted for particular scopes of work: • John T. Boyd Co.: Ore reserve estimation, preliminary mine plan, and mine capital and operating cost estimation. • Bechtel Civil and Minerals: Conceptual engineering, processing capital and operating cost estimation. • Hazen Research Inc.: Metallurgical testing. • Sierra Pacific Power: Cost estimation for power supply. Metallurgical testing and conceptual engineering of both heap and agitation leach flowsheets were investigated concurrently. Numerous economic evaluations were conducted for both heap and agitation leaching at varying production capacities. The results indicated a heap leaching flowsheet treating 454 kt/y (500,000 stpy) yielded the best economics and was compatible with the "fast-track" development goal. Conservative design criteria was established to provide operating flexibility and ensure plant productivities. A summary of major design criteria is presented in Table 1. HIMCO assembled the results of the studies of the various consultants along with internally generated studies to produce the feasibility document. The decision to supply 100% equity by HIMCO rather than arrange project financing help to expedite the project. Cooperation Between HIMCO and Regulatory Agencies With cooperation and mutual trust established between HIMCO and regulatory agencies, the time required for environmental permitting was streamlined as much as practical. To expedite the required construction permits, HIMCO proposed to the USFS that HIMCO fund the total cost of an Environmental Assessment Report (EAR) and that issues be addressed at the technical level of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The previous studies on the critical issues of archaeology and biology provided HIMCO with the information to satisfy the proposed approach. Houston International Minerals and the USFS agreed to have Environmental Research and Technology (ERT) of Fort Collins, CO, prepare a draft EAR for the USFS.

Equipment management embraces modern management techniques. These include reliability-centered maintenance, life-cycle costing, capital performance, the effective use of information and productive organizational models.

Modern production equipment has been designed with greater productive capacity and higher reliability to meet the rigorous operating demands of the mining industry. These improvements have also made the equipment more complex and challenging to maintain. Whether these equipment enhancements contribute to more effective mining operations depends on the overall quality of maintenance. Maintenance is not a stand-alone activity. Although its quality depends primarily on maintenance, cooperation and support from other departments, coupled with the skillful guidance of mining managers, greatly influence maintenance success. Therefore, maintenance risk management must look beyond maintenance itself. Successful maintenance risk management begins with an assessment of the maintenance-related interactions of all mining departments within the mine’s stated operating strategy.

The primary water supply system for the City of San Francisco and adjacent peninsula areas consists of aging and deteriorated pipelines crossing under the San Francisco Bay (the Bay). This system is highly vulnerable to seismic damage from the nearby San Andreas and Hayward fault zones. The Bay Tunnel Project will replace the existing system with a 8-km-long (5-mi-long) tunnel underneath the Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using earth pressure balance methods and will have a two-pass lining system of precast concrete bolted, gasketed segments for initial support, and a welded steel pipe final lining. The project challenges include tunneling through both soft ground and rock conditions without any intermediate shaft access over the entire alignment. Seismic performance criteria include maintaining service flows after a large earthquake.

Agglomeration techniques are widely used by industry to form fine particles into larger masses that are easier to handle and process. One area where agglomeration is potentially useful is in heap leaching operations. With-out agglomeration, fine particles travel through the heap, clogging the spaces between the larger particles and resulting in poor leach solution flow. Poor flow of leach solution will result in long leach rates and/or decreased metal recovery. Agglomeration immobilizes the fine particles and therefore improves heap permeability to fluid flow. Additional additives (binders) are needed to prevent agglomerates from breaking up as leaching solution percolates through the heap. Type II Portland cement and lime are two well-known binders used in gold and silver leaching, but these are limited to alkaline leaching environments. Various other products have been tested as binders, including polymers. This paper summarizes the benefits of agglomeration in heap leaching and the results obtained from the testing of several different agglomeration binders in heap leaching operations.

The Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) Tunnel is a world first in the use of tunnel space transmitting both road and water through the same spatial envelope. The unique aspect of the SMART project is that the highway decks are used periodically for the conveyance of water. This aspect of the project has posed its own technical challenges that have been overcome in the design stage of the work allowing the project to be taken forward to construction with confidence in the systems to be Installed in the tunnel.

Deposited millions of years ago in irregular paleokarstic channels, Jamaica’s extensive bauxite deposits provide good quality ore for alumina production and subsequent aluminum smelting. Bauxite mining operations are critical to the Jamaican economy. It accounts for a large percentage of Jamaica’s export earnings. Bauxite production in Jamaica accounts for about 10% of the world’s output each year. Bauxite deposits in Jamaica lie close to the surface. They can be extracted using standard surface mining techniques. The deposits occur in scattered pockets across the country’s rugged landscape. So it was necessary for two of the country’s major mining and refining operations to implement cost effective methods for the acquisition and management of bauxite reserves and surface ownership distribution rights.

Equivalent elastic properties of discontinuously jointed rock masses are computed using a non-representative volume element(NRVE) approach within a three dimensional finite element program. Joint persistence, defined as the percentage of a joint plane that is actually occupied by joint material, is used in the NRVE computations as a step towards greater realism in stability analysis of mine openings. Persistence p is also the probability that a segment of a joint plane is occupied by joint material. Computations reveal a threshold phenomenon in jointed rock mass moduli similar to that observed in percolation theory. A rapid decrease in moduli occurs above a critical value pc(about 0.6). A detailed analysis of the well-known solution for stress about a circular opening in isotropic, elastic ground illustrates the effects of joint set orientation, spacing and persistence. Although stable “on average”, joint segment failures reveal a threat to stability and point towards rational design of reinforcement or support of discontinuously jointed rock masses.

Editor's note: information for this feature was taken from the published APCOM proceedings. Computer trends, with special focus on the reasons for computer use, grabbed the lion's share of attention at the 23rd worldwide meeting on the Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry (APCOM 23). However, technical topics did not provide the meeting's sole focus. The last-minute inability of certain former communist countries to fund the travels of a few scheduled speakers was a reminder that science does not operate in a void. As with all technical progress, the APCOM presentations raised interesting questions regarding interrelated organizational dynamics and political and socioeconomic issues. Consider US Bureau of Mines (USBM) research to design an expert control systems to "duplicate" an experienced, "good" operator during automated underground roof bolting. In his presentation of the project, Takach, Jr. stressed the importance of preserving the ability to switch from automatic to manual drilling control. From a technical standpoint, this allows the expert system to "learn" from a good operator. As important, he said, is that this flexibility decreases the human operator's sense of being replaced by the machine. The question arises: Which will loom larger in union minds, increased operator safety through remote opera¬tion or the potential for total operator replacement? Like any new product, computer technology relies on marketing to aid its acceptance and use. Consider, too, a decision support system, by Schena and Gochin, for mineral resource management in a developing country. Combustion processes, comminution and materials handling can generate airborne particulates. Regulation of these particulates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) is becoming progressively more stringent, and regulations will soon include ?nanoparticulates,? which are particles finer than 100 nanometers (0.1 mm). Nanoparticulates are believed to have significant negative health effects due to their high surface area and reactivity. Although it was argued that nanoparticulate concerns were only important for combustion, studies at Michigan Technological University have shown that materials handling and comminution release significant quantities of nanoparticles into the air. Laboratory studies have shown that the use of sodium metasilicate reduced airborne particles finer than 10 mm (PM10) by 86% and particles finer than 2.5 mm (PM2.5) by 80% for iron ore. Additional studies were conducted that revealed that nanoparticulate emissions were present in the types of operations conducted at pyrometallurgical facilities.

Sequential excavation of the Beacon Hill Station has been accomplished in highly complex and inter-layered sand, silt, and clay soils with multiple perched groundwater tables. Successful excavation has required the installation of a deep dewatering well system used to depressurize sand layers above and within the excavated tunnel faces. In addition, the presence of sand layers in the crown of the Platform Tunnels required jet grouting at depths of up to 49m (160-ft). This paper discusses the design intent, construction, and effectiveness of the dewatering system and the selective jet grouting of sand horizons and shaft break outs for the successful construction of the deepest SEM station excavation ever completed in the United States.
