Low flotation recovery and selectivity have been long-standing problems in the treatment of most ultra-fine phosphate ores. This paper investigates the improved flotation of two ultra-fine Brazilian phosphate ores from Itafos’ Arraias project. These ores are predominantly composed of quartz, muscovite, apatite and a Ca-Al phosphate. As a result of fine phosphate dissemination and associated grinding requirements, column flotation was selected for the metallurgical test program to address the inherent limitations of fine particle flotation using conventional flotation cells. Accordingly, both benchtop Denver cell and laboratory column flotation tests were conducted to optimize their respective flotation responses. Improved flotation performance was achieved using column flotation as compared to benchtop mechanical flotation. In column flotation, a P2O5 concentrate grade of 30.5-31.0% was yielded at a flotation recovery of 83.7-85.1% for the 38x0µm generated ultrafines. The benefits of Eriez’ column flotation technology realized from this study include a higher degree of selectivity, increased recovery, and reduced collector dosage as compared to bench-scale mechanical flotation.

The release of fluid inclusions has a strong potential for the unintentional activation of pyrite during flotation. The present study aims to characterize fluid inclusions in a natural pure pyrite. The results indicate that a certain amount of fluid inclusions exist in the pyrite. The fluid inclusions assume a variety of shapes, including long strips, oval shapes and irregular shapes, with sizes that range from a few microns to dozens of microns. From the EDS results of hollow positions that resulted from the fracture of the fluid inclusions on the pyrite surface, certain amounts of Al, Cr, C, O, Ag and Cu were clearly detected; these elements were not detected in FeS2 pyrite itself. The contents of the inclusions were released into solution when the sample was subjected to a grinding process. Under experimental conditions of 2 g of pyrite cleaned in 40 mL of pure deionized water under an inert atmosphere, the concentrations of Cu, Fe, Cl- and SO4 2- released from the inclusions reached concentrations of 3.29 × 10-6, 32.52 × 10-6, 51.57 × 10-6 and 75.90 × 10-6 mol/L, respectively. These values are significantly greater than those from the experimental nonoxidative and oxidative dissolution of the pyrite. The fluid inclusions of pyrite were, therefore, concluded to represent the dominant sources of Cu, Fe, Cl- and SO4 2- in the aqueous solution. The present investigation provides a new understanding of the source of the unavoidable metal ions in the pulp and may benefit understanding of the flotation theory and environmental geochemistry.

"In underground mining, machine design is predominantly dictated by mine conditions and individual customer desires. In partnership with Foresight Energy, J. H. Fletcher & Company was tasked to design and manufacture a new roof bolting machine with six independent drilling apparatus on board capable of drilling and bolting the roof and ribs with material handling. This is the first Fletcher® six head machine to be designed and built for the mines in the United States. The machine is intended to work in the Illinois Coal Basin. The objective was to produce a machine capable of drilling and installing six bolts simultaneously with a limited number of operators. The goal of the mine is to decrease the time to bolt a cut to improve the safety level of the current roof bolting method, improve efficiency and to improve the bottom line cost of entry development. The customer wanted four mast feed drills at the front of the machine dedicated to installing roof bolts and then another two mast feed drills behind them dedicated to rib bolts. This dictated the requirement of latched controls, which would allow the operator to start drilling one hole and then latch the controls to be able to move on to the next. To accomplish this, we developed a unique hydraulic latch circuit to maintain operator safety and compliance. Guarding was added to prevent an operator from coming into accidental contact with a latched drill. The result of the design is a machine with a single platform and six independent masts with drillheads: four masts strictly for drilling and installing roof bolts on the front of the platform and then two masts on the back of the platform for rib bolts. The feed and rotation controls at each operator’s station include a latch control for drilling. The latch control will allow the operator to lock in the feed and rotation once the hole has been collared, allowing the operator to move on to the next hole. The rear of the machine is equipped with material handling. There are two material pods with winch controls as well as a mesh rack that includes mesh lift, mesh tilt and mesh sump. The six-head roof bolter allows fewer operators to drill and install roof and rib bolts, which in turn lowers the miners’ roof exposure per cut. This design reduces the operator’s exposure from the inherent pinch points and rotary hazards once he has engaged the latch drilling. Therefore the machine will help to decrease the time to bolt a cut, improving productivity while enhancing the ability to operate the machine safely. INTRODUCTION When mining underground it is necessary to support the roof quickly to prevent it from collapsing after an area has been mined. Since the 1950s, the primary method for supporting the roof has been the installation of roof bolts. Roof bolting is one of the most basic functions yet one of the dangerous jobs in the underground mining operation (1). The Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA) Health and Safety Accident Classification injury database showed an average of 660 roof bolter operator accidents per year over a 5-year period (1999-2003) (2). The numbers show that roof bolting is the most hazardous machine-related job in underground mining. It represents 39 percent of all machine-related accidents in underground coal mines. In 1993, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study that has shown the activity of drilling as the most hazardous job task performed by a roof bolter operator, accounting for 31 percent of all roof bolting injuries (3). Almost half (46%) of these drilling injuries were due to falling rocks or coal from the roof. All of these injuries occurred under supported roof. The majority of these injuries (about 99%) are not caused by a major roof collapse but from falls of smaller rock from the immediate roof. This type of roof failure has also been termed “skin fall.”"

Flash smelting products of a copper sulfide concentrate collected at successive levels in an experimental reactor have been studied by reflected light microscopy, scanning electron microscope - energy dispersive analysis and electron nicroprobe analysis. Chalcopyrite, intermediate solid solution, bornite, chalcocite, metallic copper, magnetite, iron-copper spinel, pyrrhotite, hematite, delafossite and cuprite have been identified in the product samples. The detailed reflected light microscopy study of these phases and their abundance in the samples has resulted in the identification of the series of reactions during flash smelting.

Bauxite ore is used to produce alumina in the Bayer process. For each tonne of alumina produced, around 1 to 1.5 t of bauxite residue is generated, with an estimated 4 Mt of the residue generated worldwide in 2015, four times more in 1985. The residue is currently stocked in tailings dams. A new step in the Bayer process has been used to recover sodium hydroxide, which is used as a leaching agent, and reduce its content in the residue. After digestion, the residue is separated from the Bayer liquor and passed through press filters. This bauxite residue is known as a source of scandium. Characterization of the residue is an important step to map opportunities worldwide. For this reason, the goal of the present study was to characterize the bauxite residue and evaluate the challenges for scandium recovery. The scandium content was found to be 43 g/t, which makes this bauxite residue attractive for extraction purposes.

Interactions between human beings and their work environment require the body to regulate its temperature by balancing heat production and loss. Comfortable environmental conditions are crucial for keeping workers safe and healthy and to maintain a suitable level of productivity. However, achieving a proper core body temperature may become challenging under different conditions, especially in high heat-generating workplaces such as hot underground mines. Because hot underground mines have the potential to expose workers to heat stress, compliance with standardized and regulated indices and criteria is distinctly required. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the current research on heat stress and strain in hot underground mines, collected from published and specialized literature. General definitions, statistics of heat-related accidents in mining, overview of the indices, standards, and recommendations for heat stress are provided herein.

Despite a global slowdown in most mining sectors, Caterpillar, the world?s largest mining equipment maker continues to forge ahead with new, and improved offerings to the global mining industry. On Nov. 10, as part of its Loading and Hauling Mining Focus Session at its Tinaja Hills proving grounds south of Tucson, AZ, Caterpillar unveiled to customers and media its two latest mining products, the 994K wheel loader and 6020B hydraulic shovel. The Caterpillar 994K wheel loader builds on a nearly 25-year history of the 994 model but with one noticeable difference ? the 994K is bigger ? much bigger. Weighing in at 239,142 kg (527,218 lb) the 994 K is up to 20 percent larger and comes with up to 30 percent increase in payload capacity. This behemoth of a machine is currently being tested at Caterpillar?s Tucson Proving Grounds, Anglo Gold Ashanti?s Cripple Creek and Victor gold mine in Colorado and Taseko?s Gibraltor copper and molybdenum mine in British Columbia, Canada.

Deep-sea manganese nodules are considered to be potential ores of manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper. Considerable time, effort, and funds have been applied to the study of Se distribution of nodules on the sea floor and the location of economically important areas, but little effort has been spent in understanding the origin of nodules. Most theories that have been proposed to explain the origin of manganese nodules have been based on inorganic physicochemical processes. It is not by coincidence, however, that the area considered to be most economically feasible is in the zone of high biological productivity in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean and underlain by siliceous biogenic sediment. The genesis of manganese nodules and the concentration of many trace elements are intimately associated with biological processes.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated methods for extracting metals from a variety of arsenic-containing smelter flue dusts. One proposed flowsheet includes a sulfuric acid leach, a cooling step to precipitate hydrated copper sulfate, and a reduction-precipitation of As2O3. Arsenic extractions greater than 90 pct were achieved, while copper extraction ranged from 50 to 85 pct under the conditions examined. Copper was removed from the leach solutions by crystallization followed by SO2 precipitation of arsenic which resulted in a 98 to 99.9 pct As2O3 product. Other metals, such as lead and zinc, were concentrated in the leach residue or in other byproduct streams for recovery of their valuable metal contents.

Extensive exploration has resulted in delineation of a massive sulfide district on the north flank of the east-central Alaska range. The district covers approximately 400 square miles and contains numerous stratiform; transported and some replacement type sulfide deposits ranging in size from less than 1 million tons to 20 million tons. Five types of ores were sampled for the study. Mineralogical analysis revealed that the minerals are too fine grained for conventional grinding and beneficiation. Hydrometallurgical studies were con-ducted using ferric chloride as a lixiviant. Ore microscopic studies as well as electron microprobe analyses of minerals in the raw samples and leach residues explained the low recoveries for certain elements as well as sources of impurities that need to be eliminated from the process streams.

The dissolution behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions at 75°C has been investigated. The variables investigated include concentration of lixiviants, pH of the solution and various oxidants. The anodic dissolution of gold was studied in the absence of oxidants using the potentiodynamic polarization technique. The cathodic reaction of oxidants was studied on a platinum electrode. Tafel polarization tests were also performed to determine the dissolution rate. The overall dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solutions was examined using a mixed potential theory. A comparative study on the role of cupric am mine, oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite as oxidants for the dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solutions has been carried out.

This report is based on existing reports and recently gathered field data. It discusses mineral resource potential of Tertiary playas in the Fort Irwin region. An estimated 1.3 million tons of measured salt "reserves", and 20 million tons of indicated salt resources, have been identified north of the fort. Other indicated resources include 300,000 tons of celestite, 800,000 tons of gypsum, and 10 million tons of selenite. Zeolitic tuff was mined south of Fort Irwin from 1978 to 1984, and unexplored occurrences are widespread. Calcium-bentonite is mined near Barstow, and more may exist, including valuable sodium-and lithium-based bentonites.

Introduction In October of 1961 Texas Gulf Sulphur Company contacted the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory, of the North Carolina State University, and requested assistance in the development of a phosphate ore body in Beaufort County. The main: objectives of the work at Asheville were defined as follows. The Laboratory should try to determine on the basis of drill core samples, submitted by Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, the highest grade of phosphate concentrate that could be obtained with high recoveries from North Carolina ore, the thickness of the ore body that could be treated economically in one section, and the quantity of concentrate that could be obtained per acre. The results should be compared with data obtained from the treatment of Florida ores. It was important to use mineral preparation methods during the initial laboratory work that could be verified later by continuous pilot plant operation and could be scaled-up for a commercial plant. The writer was in charge of the project at the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory and participated in the development of one of North Carolina's greatest mineral resources from the first drill core examination to the production of the first poundage and tonnage quantities of flotation concentrates. The Lee Creek phosphate mine and mill was put in operation in early 1966 and can produce three million tons of phosphate concentrate a year. Sulfuric- acid, and phosphoric acid plant, diamonium phosphate plant and triple super phosphate plants came on stream in 1967; at that time they were the world's largest. The particle-bubble attachment and the rupture of formed aggregates in flotation cell were investigated in terms of turbulent regime. It was found that the particle-bubble collision rate is closely correlated to the energy barrier between particles and bubbles, and no adhesion takes place for the hydrophilic particle-bubble system due to the introduced ?capture efficiency? f(a) being zero. The values of an especially defined Weber number, i.e. the ratios of turbulent stress to aggregate strength in the inertial subrange of turbulence were estimated, the results showed that the detachment of a particle from a bubble involved in an aggregate is mainly caused by the turbulent stress only in the impeller zone, no bubble splitting occurs both in the impeller zone and in the bulk zone.

One often sees in the papers, in these days of ecological consciousness, estimates of the quantity of land that has been "devasted," "ruined," or "destroyed," by surface or strip mining, especially for coal. One feels sure that coal miners must have been the first to discover the art of excavation and that the public didn't know of its existance until five or 10 years ago! Estimates of the acreage vary widely with most of them sounding somewhat unreal. One estimate of 175,000 acres in Alabama appeared in one newspaper article and the implication was that all of this was mining for coal. The question was raised anew last summer when the author began working on a land use estimate utilizing aerial photographs, a preliminary project to the Alabama Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) contract presently being fulfilled. One land use category was barren or waste land and aside from some sand beaches in the two coastal counties in Alabama, recently strip mined land constituted most of that category. It quickly became apparent that old stripping was very hard to detect so that estimates from aerial photographs are not accurate. With regard to relatively new stripping, a thin veneer of reflective dirt washed over the countryside may result in a considerable overestimate of the excavated area. Actually, there is a way to estimate the area excavated by strip mining using published Bureau of Mines figures. At least three sets of data are needed: (1) Coal production figures, (2) average thickness of coalbeds mined, and (3) an accurate recovery figure.

This paper describes the vibration transmissibility characteristics of mining vehicle seats under dynamic conditions in an opencast iron ore mine. Magnitude and frequency contents of vibration signals on the seat floor as well as on top of the seats were measured to record the change during transmission. The conventional rigid seats were found to resonate at about 4 Hz, which coincides with the resonance of the human spine. The pneumatic suspension seats also proved to be more efficient in attenuating the overall vibration energy transmitted from the vehicle chassis to the human body.

INTRODUCTION The occurrence of the radioactive element radium, [2gg~a], often in trace amounts, in the crust of the earth gives rise to a flux of the daughter product radon, ['ii~n], across the earth-air interface. This so-called exhalation process has been studied by many investigators [KO 45, Kra 64, Pe 66, Wi 741] over several decades. In the earlier investigations the exhalation process was studied in a purely geophysical context, but over the last 20 years it has been realized, that under certain conditions the exhalation may be intense enough to also have radiological implications. This is for example the case where relatively radium-rich wastes or by-products, like uranium mill tailings and phospho-gypsum, are stored in larger quantities. In order to be able to predict the radiological impact on the environnent it is necessary to know the rate of exhalation of radon from the surface of the exhaling material. Usually the determination of these exhalation rates has been done by measurements in situ directly upon the accumulated material [~le 74, Ha 791. Although such field measurements have the obvious merit of dealing directly with the full scale problem, the results are often lacking in generality, making predictions for other situations difficult or even impossible. The present paper describes some results of an investigation where it is attempted from laboratory measurements on samples of limited size to obtain material parameters, which are suited for extrapolating and predicting the radiational behaviour of larger accumulations of the material. THEORY Let us consider a sample of a radon exhaling material enclosed in a container with a dead space volume, Vd, and initially containing radon free air. If the total exhalation rate (number of atoms per unit time) is c, the radon concentration (number of atoms per unit volume) N will initially grow with the time t according to the equation [ ] where [R] is the decay constant of radon. As the concentration (or activity) in the container grows, the net exhalation rate will slow down because of back diffusion, and, furthermore, radon atoms may be removed from the container, not only by radioactive decay, but also by diffusion leakage [JO 81 ]. If, however,only the initial. part of the activity growth curve is considered, the total exhalation rate, c, is given by [c = r•Vd(2) where r is the initial activity growth rate in the container. Let the container be cylindrical with an inner cross-section S and filled to a height L with a radon exhaling material with the specific mass p, the porosity E, the radon pore production rate f and the diffusion length i. This paper presents the unique design and construction challenges for the Technoparc Station, located in downtown Montreal as a part of Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM), a light rail rapid transit system. The station is located 15 m below the street with rock-bearing secant pile wall as the primary structural system working as both the retaining and gravity structure. The paper highlights the challenges related to the support of excavation structure, invert slab resisting high hydrostatic forces, waterproofing tightness etc. It also focuses on the importance of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in underground tunneling projects for effective coordination, clash-free, optimized design and costs.

Mining always leaves a mark behind. Dealing with this legacy is not only a tremendous challenge in Germany, but internationally too. The Technical University Georg Agricola (THGA) in Bochum, Germany, has established a Research Center for Post-Mining. Researchers combine expertise from a variety of technical and nontechnical fields in their quest to shape the post-mining era that completes the mine life cycle. In this respect, the Research Center focuses on four research areas: Perpetual tasks and mine water management, Geomonitoring, Material sciences and site transition. With more than 200 years of successful partnership with the mining industry in Germany and abroad, THGA offers a perfect setting for fresh and sound ideas in order support mining’s social license to operate. The aim of the paper is to describe the Post-Mining Research Center along with exemplary research projects that are of interest to the mining industry globally and to foster technical communication and research networking.

The responsible treatment of natural resources, including mineral raw materials, contributes to the protection of the environment. The management of resources and the environment encompasses reduction of emission through application of environmentally friendly processes, economical use of resources, recycling and substitution, application of energy saving processes, land reclamation and recultivation, as well as a well balanced regional and land use planning. A variety of materials are needed for measures to protect the environment. Many of these materials are, or to a large percentage consist of, mineral raw materials, which become effective either directly or indirectly in their natural state or after an appropriate industrial treatment. We call them environmental minerals. Although extraction and processing of these mineral raw materials destined for use in the protection of the environment, may have a negative impact on the environment on one hand, preventive or curing measures to protect the environment on the other would not be possible without them. We have to accept certain smaller burdens of the environment, which naturally will have to be kept at the lowest possible level, in order to avoid or minimize greater damages to nature. In the broad group of industrial minerals and rocks there is a wide variety of mineral raw materials, which lend themselves for countermeasures in favor of the environment. To hamper their production and processing through excessive environmental regulations would make the protection of the very environment more difficult or even impossible.
