Net Present Value (NPV) derived from Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis remains the dominant metric for evaluating mining projects despite its well-documented inability to capture managerial flexibility under uncertainty. DCF assumes that all risks are perfectly priced by financial markets. This is an unlikely assumption for volatile commodity prices, geological variability, or the array of mining technical and operational risks present on all mine sites. Real Options Analysis (ROA) was developed to remedy this limitation by explicitly valuing the ability of managers to defer, expand, scale, switch, or abandon investments as new information emerges, and to capture upside and mitigate downside risks. While ROA is philosophically correct and routinely shows an uplift in project value compared with DCF, its practical application at industrial scale is severely constrained, ROA faces the reality of a combinatorial explosion in complexity of decision trees, Monte Carlo simulations and other models required when multiple interdependent or sequential options exist across numerous mining zones and time periods. The AMC Hill of Value® (HoV) process adopts the same intellectual foundation as ROA, that flexibility has economic value, but operationalizes it through a far more robust and scalable architecture. It is built on parametric relationships, rapid scheduling, and multi-objective evolutionary optimisation. HoV can evaluate millions of compound, interdependent real options in a single optimisation run, delivering resilient, adaptive strategies that preserve managerial flexibility while simultaneously optimising NPV, mine life, risk exposure, and other corporate objectives. This paper demonstrates that HoV is the practical, industrial-scale embodiment of real options thinking in mining: it discovers, ranks, and translates the most valuable real options into strategic mine plans, overcoming the scalability barriers that have prevented widespread adoption of classical ROA.

This paper describes," the application, of a modular or building block approach to the analysis, design, and control of complex mineral treating processes. The main purpose of the paper is tutorial, to show the reader how such processes can be modeled using a modern digital computer" and, not to discuss in any detail the results that may be achieved in such studies. It is proposed that, the main techniques be illustrated by reference mainly to the Bayer process for alumina extraction and purification; in cooperation with the Aluminum Company of Canada Ltd. the author and his Colleagues at McMaster University and their students have studied this, process as a means of applying new computer techniques to extractive metallurgical processes. The plant described was studied by the author and his colleagues as a senior undergraduate project in cooperation with the Aluminum Company of Canada. It is one of several studies that have been carried out with Canadian industry. (1)

The Republic of Botswana, one of the newer countries of southern Africa, attained independence on September 30, 1966. It covers an area of about 225,000 square miles (582,000 square kilometers) which makes it slightly larger than France, or slightly smaller than Texas. It is bounded by Zimbabwe, the Republic of South Africa and Namibia, including the Caprivi Strip. Angola and Zambia are close neighbors. (Map 1). Botswana lies at the center of the southern African plateau at a mean elevation of 3,300 feet (1,000 m). It is a natural habitat for most species of African fauna. The rolling sands and extensive grasslands of the Kalahari Desert cover the southwest. The climate is sub- tropical. Summers, although tempered by north- easterly breezes, are hot, but mean maximum temperature seldom rises above 100°F (38°C). Winters are dry with wide temperature variations, which often give rise to frosts.

Mine tailings, the byproduct of mining and mineral processing, are increasingly mass produced as a result of increased demand for metals and minerals as well as the advancement in technology that allows for the exploitation of lower-grade ores. Lower grades can increase the volume of tailings that may contain new gangue minerals that should be evaluated for the presence of critical minerals and other valuable metals. The practice of reprocessing, while relatively new, is crucial to reducing environmental damages, obtaining valuable critical minerals from waste, and contributing to more sustainable repurposing and disposal methods. With the increase in tailings dam failures in recent years, there is a large motivating factor in remining and removing the potential hazard to benefit the safety of potentially impacted communities. In analyzing the perspectives of various domestic and international studies, this literature review will determine the feasibility of reprocessing and reutilizing mine tailings waste for a more sustainable future while exploring current practices that have benefitted ecosystems and communities.

Barium fluorphlogopites were synthesized in the laboratory in order to investigate the effects of composition and crystal parameters on surface properties and floatability. The negative surface charge of mica is determined by the barium content, the crystal cell volume, the distance between layer structure and the Ba-O bond length. The higher barium content, the larger the cell volume and distance between the layer structure and the longer the Ba-O bond, the more negatively charged the surface is and hence the more easily adsorbed to cationic collectors. When an anionic collector (sodium oleate) is used, barium oleate forms on the mica surface and hence chemical adsorption occurs.

Research in the field of mining safety and health in the United States plays an important part in protecting the lives of miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program conducts surveillance, studies and developmental work aimed at improving the safety and health of miners. With recent reviews of the Mining Program by the National Academy of Sciences and the Mining Program response (NIOSH, 2008), the importance of setting goals, conducting high quality engineering and scientific research and evaluating the outputs, outcomes, relevance and impacts of these projects has been reemphasized. Surveillance of reported injuries is a first step in deciding on research directions and in designing specific projects. Groups of injuries often share features and attributes that suggest common causes and may respond to similar preventive efforts. Identifying groups of injuries also serves to prioritize intervention efforts. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Accident and Injury database (MSHA, 2008) provides individual case reports of mining injuries, illnesses and certain no-injury accidents (events such as roof falls that stop mine production or miners’ activities for more than one hour). This database is an indispensable resource for researchers and stakeholders needing information on the statistics of these events. From an epidemiological perspective, research projects target groups of miners at risk due to specific patterns of work, equipment, mine settings and the management of safety and health in their mines. Incidence rates are provided by the MSHA data for selected variables, such as surface/underground location, standard industrial classification and state. While incidence rates are the preferred measure for all variables, denominators are not typically available; for example, to more clearly understand the data about injury by occupational type, it would be necessary to conduct demographic surveys. A current survey of the demographics of the mining industry should be complete by 2010, which will allow incidence rates to be developed for a number of variables such as age, occupation and experience. This survey will provide the first update of its kind since the first survey was conducted in 1985. This report describes an alternative method of analyzing and presenting MSHA data for the purpose of identifying high-cost, high-severity injuries and illnesses. Researchers at the NIOSH Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) developed programs to find the top five most frequent accident classes, natures of injury, types of accidents and other selected variables from the MSHA database. Studying these variables gives a cross-sectional snapshot of the most frequent groups of injuries within a commodity, regional group or time period, and allows researchers to quickly understand developing patterns for new research projects. Following a severe recession in the early 1980's, mining companies have taken significant steps to improve metallurgy and reduce operating costs. They do not view chemical reagents and the long-term relationship with reagent producers the same way they did two decades ago. This paper discusses the general perspective of changes that have taken place over the years, especially with respect to cost of production, selling price and environmental constraints. A cooperative program between the consumers and producers of chemical reagents is recommended to understand each other's problems and identify the present and future needs of the mining industry. This approach will be beneficial to the long-term survival of both parties.

Anthracite preparation developments, particularly in the early days of the anthracite industry, formed the basis for the modern coal preparation plants that have become so essential to the coal industry today. The anthracite industry, from early in the 19th century until relatively recently, was a leader in mining, preparation and marketing of coal, and played a leading role in the development of the industrial America we know today. Anthracite was discovered in America in about 1760--the story of Necho Allen is well known--but the rediscoveries leading to mining operations took place about 50 years later. The Wurtz brothers in 1815 at Scranton, the Smith brothers at Wilkes-Barre in 1807, Beach in Hazleton in about 1814, and Boyd in 1816 at Shamokin were all instrumental in promoting early mining and marketing of anthracite (J3. The early canals and railroads were built for the specific purpose of moving anthracite to the market areas. Eventually, the industry grew until, in 1917, it reached a production zenith of a little over 100,000,000 tons, representing about 20 percent of the total coal output in the United States. Almost half of the anthracite produced that year was consumed for domestic heating, a utilization that had dominated the industry for almost 100 years. Initially, anthracite had to be used by gunsmiths and blacksmiths, after which had followed the consumption of extensive quantities for railroads, blast furnaces and foundries, and electric power generation. Most of the markets have been lost to coke, oil, and natural gas. Near the anthracite regions, however, significant quantities are still used for domestic heating, power generation, carbon black manufacture, blending with bituminous coal to make metallurgical coke and fuel, and for other industrial purposes. Thus, anthracite production has not been entirely committed to history, but remains an active industry that follows modern practices in the mining, preparation, shipping, and utilization of a fuel that is still a valuable adjunct to the national economy. In fact, its inherent low sulfur content may make it an important fuel of the future. Estimates indicate there are reserves of anthracite to last for 300 years at a consumption rate of 50,000,000 tons/year. Anthracite Preparation Yesterday A 170-year history of the anthracite industry obviously is not the purpose of this discussion. A complete history of anthracite preparation, the rather unglamorous step in the processing of "mine run" hard coal to make it suitable for the user, is also not practical. Hence, the purpose of this report is to trace the development of some of the most important processes used through the years to meet a part of the demand for energy developed by our modern society. Anthracite preparation in the early days of the industry consisted solely of separating slate from the coal, by hand, underground (Z). This method prevailed for almost 20 years until wrought iron hand rakes were introduced to separate the large and small sizes. Shortly thereafter, the first attempts were made to size and clean the coal aboveground. The coal was dumped on a perforated cast iron plate, and men used sledge hammers to break the larger pieces into smaller sizes suitable for the market. The smallest sizes--that is, the material that went through the plate--were thrown away because they had no value at that time--a concept that existed for many years and actually was the basis for the subsequent "river" coal production and the many silt banks which are landmarks in the anthracite region. The larger sizes, at that time, sold for 50 cents per ton. The Batten breaker, or roll crusher, was invented in 1844, followed soon thereafter by the Snell-Diehm breaker (A). The latter had disadvantages, including excessive waste and fixed product size, but it later was improved in these respects. A breaker was also developed at Minersville, Pa., at about the same time that processed 200 tons of coal per day, using roll crushers and circular screens (1). Handpicking, from the beginning of anthracite preparation, was an important part of the cleaning process and was still being practiced as late as 1950. It was this process that involved the "breaker" boys of coal region lore. How much good handpicking accomplished depended on how much impurity was present in the coal--the more the impurities, the greater the reduction in ash. Thus, high-impurity streams were significantly improved, whereas picking of relatively clean coal was mainly to show an effort to make a quality product. As indicated, picking is largely a visual operation. It was and is wasteful of coal in the larger sizes since some good coal is always associated with the bad. However, it was probably much more effective' in the larger than the smaller sizes.

In order to predict and minimize detrimental production problems due to the recycling of process water in sulfide ore processing, the influence of major species, calcium and sulfate in process water on sphalerite flotation was investigated through Hallimond tube flotation, zeta potential, diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements using sphalerite mineral sample. Assessment of process water species in flotation was done using deionized water, process water and simulated water containing calcium and sulfate ions in experiments. Hallimond flotation shows increased sphalerite float-ability in process water compared to deionized water, but no significant effect on the presence of calcium and sulfate ions in deionized water using isobutyl xanthate as a collector. The presence of calcium ions reduced the sphalerite?s negative zeta potential, while at higher concentrations, a charge reversal occurred, at about pH 11. FTIR and XPS studies revealed the presence of surface-oxidized sulfoxy and carbonate species on sphalerite at pH 11.5 in deionized water, process water and water containing calcium and sulfate ions. These surface species do not influence xanthate adsorption.

"Antioquia region, in Colombia, is considered one of the areas with the highest mercury contamination in the world due to its use in gold recovery through artisanal mining, emissions to the environment between 100 and 150 tonnes of mercury are estimated by year. Therefore it became necessary to develop a project in which it was proposed aim to empower traditional artisanal mining community, or in different areas, such as gold mining in the region of Antioquia, in the implementation of safe mining practices and environmentally sustainable, from the introduction of clean technologies, in order to prevent or mitigate the impacts generated by traditional mining on the environment and the communities involved. In order to achieve this training to traditional mining community developed and technical visits to artisanal mining were performed in order to optimize operating processes and promote safe mining practices. In the project more than 1400 artisanal miners were trained.INTRODUCTION In the developing world, a combined 30 million individuals extract more than 30 different minerals using rudimentary techniques. Gold is the preferred mineral extracted by artisanal operators due to its high unit value and its market price, which has increased almost sevenfold over the last decade (Veiga et al, 2014). The artisanal gold mining sector in Colombia has 200,000 miners officially producing 30 tonnes Au/a. In the Northeast of the Department of Antioquia, there are 17 mining towns and between 15,000 and 30,000 artisanal gold miners (M. Veiga, 2010) (Upme, 2014). This production, however, has caused environmental problems, including high levels of river siltation and mercury pollution (Veiga et al, 2014) (UPME, 2007) (Cordy et al., 2013). The mercury contamination in Colombia by artisanal gold mining has been recognized by a number of researchers and local authorities for over a decade estimated that the annual mercury emissions from artisanal gold miners in Colombia in 2007 were between 50 and 100 tonnes, however given recent gold value increases and gold rush activity, current mercury emissions are likely much higher. Colombia is likely the world's 3rd largest source of mercury emissions from AGM after China (240 to 650 tonnes of Hg/a) and Indonesia (130 to 160 tonnes of Hg/a) (Telmer and Veiga, 2008) and is the world's highest per capita mercury polluter (M. Veiga, 2010)."

President Reagan may be "a nice guy," but he is "misinformed, misdirected, and misadvised," when the subject is the state of the US copper industry, according to Sen. Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ). DeConcini took the opportunity as keynote speaker at the Arizona Conference AIME in Tucson to fire a few salvos at the Reagan Administration's industrial policies. "American copper used to stand above the rest of the world," he said. Now 21,000 copper workers, about half of the total, are out of work due to less expensive foreign imports. "Those 21,000 are real people, not statistics," he said. US production has been cut to one-third of its capacity, he said. And the Administration shows no signs of changing its position to favor US copper protection. "Third world copper towns are booming," he continued, "while ours are dying." Regardless of profits and despite oversupply, Chile continues to produce, he said. And, while US mines continue to close, "the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is handing more than $1 billion to six copper producing countries." President Reagan wanted $8.6 billion from the IMF. "I'm damn mad about it," DeConcini said. "For the life of me, I can't understand how this Administration can stand by while this industry is brought to its knees." Last year, the International Trade Commission ruled that imports were injuring domestic copper and recommended relief. The President, DeConcini said, vetoed those recommendations. DeConcini softened his tough talk a bit saying the President's image makes it difficult for people to not like him or stand up to him. "How can anyone stand up to President Reagan?" he asked. "He's such a nice guy. But it's time someone did. He's just misinformed, misdirected, and misadvised. We must take real action and we must have a president who understands this." DeConcini said he has introduced legislation aimed at helping domestic copper. It would limit copper imports to 385 kt/a (425,000 stpy). Imports now stand at about 635 kt/a (700,000 stpy). The bill would also impose a $0.33/kg ($0.15-per lb) duty on foreign copper. DeConcini called the duty a sort of "environmental equalizer" because that is the amount domestic producers must spend on pollution control devices. Foreign competitors do not have such controls, he said. "I face people who are damn mad that this country is being pushed around," he concluded. "It's time we stand up and say we can be competitive. If they (foreign countries) put an import duty on our stuff, we will do the same. It's time this country stopped being the nice guy." As if to underscore domestic copper's desperate situation described by the Senator, Duval Corp. announced about the same time as the meeting that it has nearly closed its eastside office in Tucson. Staff has been reduced from 120 to four. Spokesman Dean Lynch said the four will consist of President A. Everett Smith, a secretary, a person in environmental affairs, and another in purchasing. Duval is also selling an office and a laboratory in Tucson. Pennzoil Co., Duval's parent, has been trying to sell the company for more than a year. It began dismantling Duval in November 1984. Pennzoil took over its subsidiary's profitable sulfur operation in Texas, sold the New Mexico potash facility, and spun off gold interests in Nevada, forming Battle Mountain Gold. Northwest Mining Association - Spokane Rock Jenkins, Associate Editor The true role of minerals needs to be realized by both the policy makers and the people of the US, according to Robert Dale Wilson, director of the Office of Strategic Resources, US Commerce Department. In addition, a re-thinking of the theory of free trade and competitive advantage is necessary. Wilson made his remarks in December at the opening luncheon of the 91st Annual Convention of the Northwest Mining, Association in Spokane, WA. At a later press conference, Wilson said one of the mining industry's main problems is that its presence in Washington has been reduced in the past few years. Part of this can be seen by events within the American Mining Congress (AMC), he said. "The problem with AMC," Wilson said, "is that in 1981, when Reagan came in, no problems were seen for mining and a lot of their (AMC's) lobbyists were let go." He

A working hypothesis is presented herein mineral belts are split as all world oceans opened. Rather than plate tectonics, expansion is favored as the most recent expression of the sequence of convecting systems in the Earth's mantle. Throughout the geological record this sequence has produced similar mobile belts. This similarity lends itself to both stratigraphic classification and the theme of mineralization in mobile belts demonstrated by Y. A. Bilibin. Crustal evolution should, therefore, serve as an important guide in understanding Pacific mineral belts.

The recent depressant research is summarized, and a new kind of depressant (SCO) has been put forward in this article. Using Na-oleate as a collector and SCO as a depressant, separation of dolomite and phosphate was studied. When SCO was added in the concentration range of 80 g/t to 2kg/t at pH 9.5 ± 0.2, dolomite was absolutely depressed, and apatite kept its floatability. Interestingly, in the mixture of phosphate and dolomite, the dolomite floated. The reasons for such a behavior are investigated through flotation and electrokinetic studies. It was found that the adsorption of dissolved species on dolomite and phosphate resulted in reverse flotation. A concentration of 31.59% P205 and 83.87% recovery of P205 was obtained from the mixture of phosphate and dolomite (2:1) with 26.6% P205 using 210 g/t SCO and Na-oleate 4.93*10-5 M at pH 9.

A new polyhalite fertilizer mine is currently being developed in the UK by Anglo American Crop Nutrients. The project includes the construction of a Mineral Transport Tunnel almost 37 kms long to house a conveyor belt that will move polyhalite from the production shaft at the mine to a materials handling facility at the port. The project sets a new standard in terms of an ultra-long tunnel drive and sustainable, environmentally friendly and efcient material transport. The paper highlights in particular the . m diameter TBM in use for the construction of the ultra-long tunnelling section.

One of the several problems facing society today is that of disposing of its solid waste. Each year this nation spends approximately 4.5 billion dollars to collect, transport and dispose of some 360 million tons of domestic and industrial solid waste. Although considerable sums of time and money have been spent in researching various techniques for solid waste disposal, it is presently agreed that sanitary landfilling represents the most economic and universally adaptable solution to the problem of solid waste disposal. However, regardless of the factors favoring sanitary landfilling as the waste disposal method of choice, it should be recognized as carrying with it a potential for the degradation of ground- and surfacewater resources. Through an interdisciplinary effort regulations were promulgated during 1971 in the State of Iowa to govern sanitary disposal projects. Consistent with a set of rationales developed to preserve environmental quality, these regulations set forth hydrologic and geologic standards designed to protect Iowa's water resources. Minimum requirements have been outlined in the regulations through which the natural favorability of potential landfill sites may be evaluated. Natural favorability is primarily defined in terms of the hydrologic and geologic relationships between a proposed landfill site and those in the locality of the site. The regulations specify that leakage from a landfill to a subcropping aquifer must be less than 0.04 cu ft/day/sq ft at the base of the landfill. This factor is offered to quantify the maximum allowable leakage for all sites in unconsolidated sequences underlain by subcropping bedrock aquifers, Based on groundwater research in Iowa, the assumption is made that 50 feet of till will be sufficient to inhibit the downward flow of liquids from a landfill into bedrock aquifers. This assumes a difference of no greater than 40 feet in hydrostatic head between the water table in the unconsolidated sequence and that in the bedrock aquifer. Owing to the fact that bedrock aquifers in many areas of the state are mantled by less than 50 feet of till the regulations provide for site modification, through engineering, to meet the specified leakage standard, In such instances the leakage factor is evaluated by means of the generalized Darcy's Law Q = PIA where:

In 1967, development of the Cyprus Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit began near Challis, ID. The first mining claims were staked on an intrusive rock out-crop. Exploration continued for 14 years. In 1978, the decision was made to develop the deposit. In Dec. 1980, approval was received for the environmental impact statement and facilities construction and waste rock removal began. By the middle of 1983, 126 Mt (139 million st) of rock had been removed and all facilities completed. Location The Thompson Creek project is located about 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Challis in Custer County, in south central Idaho. "The City of Ottawa’s Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel consists of two interconnected tunnels totaling 6.2 km with a diameter of 3m including access shafts and hydraulic structures which connect to the City’s most critical sewers. This tunnel will be built 15m to 30m below ground in the downtown core adjacent to, and crossing below, the Light Rail Tunnel, which introduces additional considerations in terms of sequencing and risk mitigation. The City embarked on a unique Procurement Process to address the risks involved with a large tunnel project and those associated with tunneling below downtown, underneath and adjacent to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and connecting to live critical sewers. This paper describes the unique procurement approach employed and the contractual risk mitigation measures developed to provide the best value while minimizing risk. Specific features include Market Sounding, using a Fairness Commissioner, Contractor Prequalification and Risk Mitigation Measures in the Tender documents. INTRODUCTION This paper describes how the City of Ottawa (the City) and the project design team developed a strategic Procurement Process and Tender that incorporated industry best practices for technical and contractual risk management for the Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) project. The process was unique in that, while it employed a systematic review of project risks, it also solicited input from industry, stakeholders and provincial and federal partners to develop the request for Tender for this traditional design-bid-build project. Key drivers for this approach were initiated from the City’s concerns for cost control, cost certainty and overall project risk mitigation. To address these concerns, the City implemented the risk review and mitigation process right from the project design team selection. It was critical that the project design team embraced this risk management philosophy and carried it through each phase of the project. This paper serves as an excellent resource for municipalities or other owners embarking on a similar tunnel project, on how to properly apply industry best practices and the benefits of using them."

The Waterview Tunnel comprises twin 2.4 km long 13.1 m internal diameter three lane road tunnels in Auckland, New Zealand. The City Rail Link (CRL) is a 3.45 km long, 6.24 m internal diameter twin rail tunnel underneath Auckland’s city center. This paper presents an overview of the tunnel geometry, segmental lining congurations, geometric constraints, performance criteria and functional reuirements for the large diameter Waterview Tunnels and smaller diameter CRL tunnels. Other key aspects, which include sustainability, innovations, construction performance and practical aspects are discussed and compared. Lessons learnt from these mega tunnelling projects are also presented.

Utilizing automation is one way to improve competitiveness. Roof and rib bolting in underground coal mines has not changed significantly for more than 40 years. Most roof bolting is still a largely manual process involving high levels of staff carrying out repetitive work. Roof bolting statistically has one of the highest levels of underground accidents, including finger, hand, and arm injuries. Operators are exposed to falling objects and becoming entangled in roof bolting apparatus while roughly moving awkward 6-ft drill steels and roof bolts. It is estimated that over 25 million roof bolts are installed annually in the U.S. underground coal market with well over 1,500 operators involved in roof bolting on a day-to-day basis. Recently electrohydraulic roof bolting rigs have been installed to offer partial automation of the drilling cycle and the bolting cycle. The next stage is to provide a storage and loading system to allow full automation of fullcolumn resin roof bolts. This paper reviews the latest electrohydraulic roof bolting equipment and discusses the testing of a fully automated drill rig. Full electronic control allows each step of the roof bolting process to be recorded, providing a digital record of each installation, including hole depth, spin time, gel time, torque, and cycle time. Other benefits include monitoring of water pressure and flow, used to prevent blocked drill steels as well as digital fault finding. A fully automated roof bolting machine greatly improves operator safety and gives high-quality repeatable roof bolting with reduced cycle times.

Since the beginning of the computing age, technical software packages have not been developed to address only programming specialists but have been dedicated to process engineers. For process analysis, BRGM is developing and commercializing three packages: ? sampling software: ECHANT 2.0 for Windows ? material balance calculation: BILCO 2.0 for Windows ? steady-state simulator for plant design, adaptation and optimization: USIM PAC 2.1 for Windows This paper deals in a first part with the main features of these three packages. In a second part, advanced models are presented for SAG/ AG mills and flotation columns. An industrial case of application is shown for each of them.
