Ground falls in longwall gateroad entries remain a concern in modern longwall operations. The gateroads are subject to changing horizontal and vertical ground stress induced by longwall extraction. These stress changes can result in failure of the strata around an entry leading to large deformations of the entry roof, floor, and ribs. The gateroad support systems are required to control the failed strata while maintaining safe access to the longwall face and unimpeded ventilation. This paper presents research that was conducted to better understand the stability issues in gateroad excavations and to develop procedures for evaluating support and layout alternatives for longwall gateroads. Using the results of a field-monitoring program and numerical model analysis of case histories, a conceptual model of gateroad support needs was developed. The conceptual model formed the basis for developing a set of equations that can be used to estimate likely roof sag and support loading for given roof geology and longwall-induced loading conditions. The developed equations were used to compare predicted gateroad stability to field study results, showing satisfactory agreement. The calculation procedures are used to demonstrate their application in assessing support alternatives at a case study mine. It is concluded that the developed analysis procedures provide realistic assessments of likely ground stability and can be used to evaluate alternative gateroad support systems at operating longwall mines.

The performance of high alumina refractory subjected to high compressive loads and high temperatures is an area in which operating experience is quite limited. This paper documents the results of five months of operation of a combustion chamber lined with 83 pct alumina brick subjected to compressive stresses as high as 45psi and hot face temperatures of about 2750°F. It also describes a method for predicting long term subsidence results based on the limited information available in standard hot load limit tests. Descriptions of the chamber itself and the pilot plant upon which its design was based are included.

Introduction The Brunswick No. 12 mine is located about 27 km (17 miles) southwest of Bathurst, New Brunswick. The deposit is a stratiform massive sulfide deposit occurring in a series of sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Tetagouche Group. These rocks are generally considered to be Ordovician in age. Ore reserves at Brunswick No. 12 are 104 Mt (115 million st) grading 3.72% lead (Pb), 9.01% zinc (Zn), 0.32% copper (Cu), and 97.9 g/t (2.8 oz per st) silver (Ag). Production in 1984 was 3.5 Mt (4 million st) at 3.57% Pb, 8.91% Zn, 0.32% Cu, and 100 g/t (2.9 oz per st) Ag. Total payable silver production that year was 211 t (6.8 million oz). This made Brunswick one of the largest silver producers in Canada. Bathurst-Newcastle area and Brunswick Mining Interest in the Bathurst area was aroused in 1897 when W. Hussey discovered an iron formation at Austin Brook, just south of Brunswick No. 6 deposit. This area, and the current No. 6 area, was explored from 1897 to 1907. Iron ore was mined at Austin Brook from 1907 to 1913 and from 1942 to 1943. Any occurrence of sulfides was overlooked until 1952. In 1952, M. J. Boylen Enterprises investigated the small sulfide body associated with the Austin Brook iron formation. Other electromagnetic anomalies associated with the iron formation were investigated. The No. 6 deposit was found late in 1952, when hole B12 intersected 97.5 m (320 ft) of massive sulfides. The No. 12 deposit, 10 km (6 miles) to the north, was found in 1953. More than 30 massive sulfide deposits have since been identified in the Bathrust area. In the 1950s, St. Joe Lead Co. did extensive test work on the No. 6 and No. 12 deposits, including shafts at No. 12, lateral development at No. 12, and testing at both deposits.

Abstract. The commercial importance of hydroxyoximes as extractants for copper has given impetus to basic studies on the chemistry of metal extraction by these compounds. The discovery of accelerator compounds which produce catalytic effects on hydroxyoxime extraction rates has led to mechanistic studies of these rate processes. While these studies have highlighted the importance of interfacial chemical reactions in the extraction process, it is not yet possible to unambiguously describe the mechanisms of metal extraction in these systems or the associated catalytic effects. This paper reviews progress in understanding the mechanism of metal extraction by hydroxyoximes.

Metallurgical process methods have seen dramatic improvement over the past fifty years. As these improvements have come about, more and more emphasis has been placed on obtaining accurate and rapid analysis of the metallurgical processes. Well-defined conventional laboratory analysis procedures which have proven to be reliable were developed early in the mineral industry's history; however, these conventional procedures, which have not changed appreciably in fifty years, have the serious drawback that they are too slow to be of appreciable value in automatic control of the processes. For example, the assay results normally become available to a mill operator from eight to twenty-four hours after a sample is taken. Since the desired mineral separation can only be made while the minerals are in the flotation circuit, conventional assay results provide information similar to postmortem reports. Consequently, using conventional procedures, the mill is operated with information from an earlier period of time, which may not reflect current conditions. In recent years there has been a steady increase in the volume of required samples. At the same time, labor, material, and overhead costs have continued to rise causing the cost per assay to reach an alarming level. This rising cost per assay, plus the increasing demand for rapid analysis necessary for control, has caused the mining and metal processing industries to look toward other techniques to solve these problems As a result, X-ray fluorescence which can provide on-stream analysis necessary for control, as well as perform numerous laboratory assays at lower cost and at a much greater speed than conventional methods, has gained wide-spread attention. In addition, multichannel X-ray fluorescent instruments are now available which have been perfected to the point where the analysis of the most important chemical constituents is available within one minute after a sample is presented to the X-ray analyzer. Because of these obvious advantages, extensive use is being made today of X-ray analysis in the mining industry to analyze slags, ores, and mineral content of rocks. The results are used to make quick decisions for both mining and beneficiation of metals. For example, X-ray systems which provide rapid on-stream analysis of the slurries at desired points Fn metallurgical processes have recently been developed. The successful application of these systems has moved the milling process a step closer to fully automatic control.

By 1980, the U.S. mining community had reached a broad consensus regarding coal pillar design. The pillar load could be estimated from tributary area theory, and the pillar strength from empirical formulas and laboratory coal strength testing. Then the growth of longwall mining required new thinking. Recently, powerful design methods have emerged from analysis of large data bases of real-world pillar successes and failures. These include the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), the Mark-Bieniawski rectangular pillar strength formula, and guidelines for preventing massive pillar collapses. Sophisticated numerical models have also helped transform the pillar design landscape. In the process, our understanding of pillar mechanics has been greatly enriched. "Specialized numerical modeling codes have been developed over the years to estimate ground stresses during the excavation of coal in underground mines. One of these tools, MULSIM, a displacement discontinuity boundary element code, was last developed by Zipf into a version called MULSIM/NL [USBM 1992a, 1992b]. The code was used frequently in years past, but closure of the Bureau of Mines in 1996 marked the beginning of a pause in its development. A similar tool with distinctly different treatment of overburden idealization, LaModel, was subsequently developed [Heasley 1997] and largely displaced MULSIM/NL in the literature. However, recent work modeling deep western longwall coal mines [Larson and Whyatt 2013] has demonstrated that MULSIM has distinct advantages for regions with relatively stiff and strong overburden. This work required that MULSIM be revived and updated into a version called MulsimNL/Large. Updates include larger array sizes, greater precision, greater number of materials, and the addition of a five-point, six-segment pillar load/displacement model that provides the user a more flexible coal-strength model allowing hardening and softening before a final residual strength. MulsimNL/Large has the ability to calibrate to large load transfer distances observed in some western U.S. coal mines that appear to be caused by strong, massive units in the overburden and/or floor of a coal mine. Also, it provides the ability to calibrate gob stiffness to simulate measurements or estimates of overpanel weight distribution between gob and abutment, while still maintaining load transfer distance with minor adjustments. MulsimNL/Large can easily implement material strengths calculated from various pillar strength models. The five-point model gives MulsimNL/Large the ability to easily simulate pillar behavior that is extracted from detailed pillar models, such as FLAC3D. MulsimNL/Large or similar approaches should be considered for evaluating mining layouts where stratigraphic conditions are known to cause overpanel weight to transfer to an extent significantly longer than the empirical method widely used to calculate load transfer distances in the U.S. [Peng and Chiang 1984; Mark 1987; USBM 1990]."

Roof bolter canopy air curtains (CACs) are gaining acceptance as a respirable dust control device that can provide roof bolter operators with protection from overexposure to respirable coal mine dust. Both lab and field studies on the effectiveness of roof bolter CACs have been published. Field studies have shown the effectiveness to be variable. However, in all previous field studies, none has been conducted when the roof bolting machine operates downwind of the continuous miner (CM)—a scenario for which the CAC was designed to provide respirable dust control. This study, performed by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), was conducted to test a CAC on a roof bolter machine operating downwind of the CM. The results of testing demonstrated that the roof bolter CAC can effectively provide respirable dust protection for roof bolter operators with dust control efficiencies ranging from 11 to 40%.

Grinding with steel media adversely affects the flotation response of galena. Electrochemical measurements, flotation tests, and AES, XPS, and STEM examinations were employed to identify interactions between galena and mild steel. Iron oxide, hydroxide, or sulfate species that formed on the galena surface upon contact with mild steel decreased its floatability, with the time of contact and aeration condition affecting the severity of the flotation depression.. Parallel tests performed with an active metal, magnesium, indicated that floatability was also affected by the presence of a surface coating involving lead species.

The coefficient of variability of the rebound tests are compared with those of laboratory compressive strength tests by other investigators.

Recent underground nuclear tests in tuff, alluvium, salt, and granite have yielded data essential to the evaluation of mining applications of contained nuclear detonations. The data indicate that for these media the cavity radius is predictable within ±20% without regard to the properties of the rock in the immediate shot environment. Properties of the chimney of broken rock resulting from collapse of the cavity, on the other hand, are found to be related to the properties of the rock and its preshot structural weaknesses. Seismic effects and radioactivity distribution are sufficiently documented to serve as a basis for predicting the safety conditions associated with detonations for a variety of yields.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the Co and Mn resource of the West-Central Arkansas District, including field investigations, mineralogical characterization, beneficiation, and hydrometallurgical tests. The deposits occur within the Ouachita Mountains and are con-trolled structurally, occurring along the axes of anticlines making up the mountain ridges. Brecciated novaculite is cemented with a mixture of Mn oxides, primarily cryptomelane and psilome-lane. Cobalt is concentrated within a particular Mn oxide phase, lithiophorite. Chemical analyses on head samples reported up to 25 pct Mn and 0.17 pct Co. Magnetic separation yielded products with up to 41 pct Mn and 0.22 pct Co at recoveries of 95 pct Mn and 93 pct Co.

The discovery of a major porphyry-type copper deposit on the Papago Indian Reservation in Pinal County, Arizona was announced by El Paso Natural Gas Company in 1968. The deposit, known as the Lakeshore Property, contained an estimated 470 million tons of sulfides and oxides averaging 0.75 percent copper. History and Geology of the area have been described by Harper and Reynolds (1969). El Paso subsequently&apos; entered into the agreement for joint development of the property with Hecla Mining Company, with Hecla as the operator. "INTRODUCTION In 1990, the uranium production of SDAG Wismut in East Germany was stopped. 45 years of inconsiderate destructive exploitation had scarred both landscape and nature. With the “Wismut law” which came into force in December 1991, the Federal Republic took responsibility of the remediation of the legacies from former uranium ore mining and milling in Saxony and Thuringia. A unique opportunity turned out in order to remove environmental damage, to enhance the life quality of the local population, to shape new landscapes and to advance the economic restart. (1) The results of nearly 25 years of remediation activity are evidence that this opportunity was used at all former SDAG (Sowjetisch-Deutsche Aktien-gesellschaft) Wismut sites. The reference project “Wismut“ has evolved into a joint project of all parties involved and radiates beyond the affected regions. This is particularly reflected by the Know-how transfer starting from Wismut and the increasing activities for third parties abroad.WATER MANAGEMENT AT WISMUT REHABILITATION Within the Wismut project, water management and conventional technical water treatment are by far the most cost-intensive long-term tasks of the remediation programme. Over the medium term, there is no viable alternative to the operation of active systems to catch and treat contaminated mine waters at the Ronneburg, Schlema, Königstein, Pöhla, Seelingstädt and Helmsdorf sites. Based on the status quo, this paper outlines the key issues of the Wismut GmbH water management strategy over the medium and long term. It is focused primarily on achieving protection goals for potentially impacted water bodies in the surroundings of Wismut sites and on optimising associated remediation expenditures as well as on creating the prerequisites for achieving low post-remedial care and maintenance or walk-away system status over the long term. (2) The applied mining practices during the active SDAG Wismut period have not been up to the high standards of modern mining operations and their requirement to leave former production premises and deposited residues in a condition that was not only physically but also chemically stable. Rather the emission of mine and seepage waters laden with high acidity, metal and salt content is a frequent corollary and difficult legacy of historic mining and processing operations (4, 5). As a consequence, the control or mitigation, respectively, of environmental impacts associated with contaminated mine waters ties up enormous public resources worldwide (6, 7)."

Mine ventilation surveys were conducted by Technical Support engineers during June 1987 and September 1989 at the Dutch Creek Hine. The mine is located near Redstone, Colorado and is operated by Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. Following completion of the initial survey, several recommended improvements were incorporated into the ventilation system by mine personnel. The second survey permitted documentation of the effects of those changes on the ventilation system performance. This paper describes the processes involved in the implementation of the recommended changes. The substantial improvements in system efficiency and reduced operating costs are also described.

The first power transmission cable tunnel in Singapore was the 2.6km long undersea tunnel between Pulau Seraya and mainland Singapore, constructed in the1980s. Ten years later, similar concepts were used for the Tuas Cable Tunnel. The tunnel, which includes a 2.2km long immersed tube section, was designed to accommodate 10power circuits of 400kV and 230kV capacity. It is fully equipped with sophisticated control and communication equipment, fire suppressant and life safety systems plus a maintenance vehicle which runs on tracks through the length of the tunnel. The paper discusses the planning, design, and construction of the Tuas tunnel, and the development of these concepts for future tunnels.

Policies for reducing NOx emissions have led power plants to restrict O2, resulting in high-carbon fly ash production. Therefore, some potentially useful fly ash, such as the economizer fly ash, is discarded without a thorough knowledge of its composition. In order to characterize this type of fly ash, samples were collected from the economizer of a Portuguese power plant burning two low-sulfur bituminous coals. Characterization was also performed on economizer fly ash subsamples after wet sieving, density and magnetic separation. Analysis included atomic absorption spectroscopy, loss-on-ignition, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, optical microscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Computer-based mine management systems are being used in many surface mines to assign haul trucks, track equipment and manage information. Advances in digital communications allow these systems to be used in underground operations. Underground mine management systems help maximize production by providing gains in equipment and manpower use, drawpoint equalization in block caving operations, preventive maintenance and safety. Current systems use allocated or "locked" train and load-haul-dump (LHD) dispatching. Allocated dispatching rarely optimizes open pit product&apos; on. But it offers an efficient mode of operation underground and where options are more limited. The primary objectives of underground mine management systems are to maximize production and mini¬mize contention time through allocated train, truck or LHD dispatching, traffic control, equipment monitoring and comprehensive reporting. The main components of an underground mine management system include: ? A central computer (personal computer or worksta¬tion) in a central control center. It sends instructions to train, truck or LHD drivers and allows dispatcher interaction. ? A field computer system (FCS). This consists of a touch-screen graphics console (GC) and mobile hub - on each train, truck or LHD to receive and display instructions from the central computer and accept driver input. ? A data radio network based on leaky feeder (data, voice, video) or microcell radios (data only) and advanced token-ring technology. This passes information between the central computer and the FCSs. ? Radio frequency (RF) tags mounted at boxes, weigh bridges, tips and rim tunnel main haulage ways to locate trains or LHDs (Luke, 1993). Such a management system must be in place before implementing computer-based dispatching (Vagenas, 1991) for production optimization.
