In underground stopes that require more than minimal support, backfill is almost universally used. The term cut and fill stopingis used in a broad sense in this section, which describes underground mining methods requiring support. Support in stopes can be classified as local or short-term and general or long-term. Local support for the back of a stope, for example, can be accomplished with rock bolts or timber stulls. General support for the walls of the stope is provided by backfill. Local support provides a safe working place for the stope miners. General support, provided by backfill, preserves the access way to the stope and prevents large scale dilution of ore. "Ground support is a critical element in maintaining the stability of mining drives in deep and high stress mines. In challenging ground conditions, it is necessary to continuously explore ground support strategies that can control the resulting large deformations. It is an objective of mining operations to optimize the ground support by selecting appropriate systems at the time of installation of each reinforcement element. A successful ground support strategy will result in the use of a system that ensures both the structural and operational integrity of the excavations and mitigates the need for rehabilitation.Preliminary ground support design is often based on empirical observations and methods. Once a design is implemented, field trials, observations and in situ pull tests are used to fine tune or improve the design. Although not often employed during this process, numerical modelling can provide helpful insights into the impact of different ground support strategies. In this respect, it is possible to explore the use of multiple options before selecting the most promising ground support system for implementation in field trials. The challenges associated with the numerical modelling of rock support for mines have been described by Lorig and Varona (2013) and Potvin (2017). The employed numerical models should capture all potential failure modes of reinforcement throughout the mining sequence of the excavation. In particular, it is important to emulate the observed in situ ground support performance, as well as the influence of the installation sequence of the support. However, the time and expertise required for this type of modelling of ground support is often not available at mine sites. Even when the expertise is available, it requires a major time commitment and commitment of resources to set up, run and calibrate the sophisticated models capable of explicitly capturing the behavior of ground support.Rock reinforcement is an integral part of all ground support systems used in underground mines. Long, flexible tendons can reinforce the rock mass deeper into the walls and create a thicker reinforced shell around the underground excavation. This article focuses on the optimization of the cable-bolting strategy in squeezing conditions at the LaRonde Mine in Quebec, Canada by integrating the 3D distinct element method (DEM) in the design process. A calibrated numerical model is used to investigate a series of cable bolt configurations and provide recommendations for the ground support design."

Energy and the conversion of potential energy into alternate forms is becoming a topic of household conversation for a larger segment of the world's population as mankind's desire for products derived from the vast array of technological developments continues to expand. The world's use of steel and the high energy consumption related to the production of steel promotes an awareness of the limitations of existing technology and a search for more economical alternates. Terminology such as (BF) Blast Furnace, (BOP) Basic Oxygen Furnace, (EAF) Electric ARC Furnace, (DR) Direct Reduction, (DRI) Direct Reduced Iron and (FC) form coke is becoming commonplace as alternates are being sought to alleviate the energy crunch. Coke production by various methods was developed as early as the seventeenth century in Europe to replace the disappearing hardwood forests that supplied the initial blast furnace fuel in the form of charcoal. In 1880, the Semet Solvay by-product coke oven design was introduced to the United States at Syracuse, New York, to supply coke for use in the production of soda ash, coke oven gas and its by products as the primary source of many organic processes. Although the Semet Solvay coke oven has not been marketed for decades, these coke oven batteries are in use today producing metallurgical coke, coke oven gas, and related by-products.

"This paper analyzes mine emergency management and rescue practices in German underground coal mines and compares them to those used in the United States. The German mining industry has developed these practices over more than 100 years, and they have successfully managed numerous fire, water inundation and ground control emergencies using these techniques. The authors interviewed German mine emergency professionals about rescue team and emergency operations. These operations were then analyzed to determine which of these German principles would be of interest to United States mine rescue teams. Implementing these programs into United States mine rescue and emergency operations was analyzed. INTRODUCTION Coal mining has become much safer industry than it has been in the past. Advances in safety and health regulations and company polices have improved working conditions for miners all over the world. Even with these advances there is still a need for continued attention to safety and health. It is also important for mine safety professionals to observe practices and procedures in other countries and cultures and learn what and how to apply this knowledge in their own systems. Coal mine rescue has been an integral part in improving coal mine safety. Mine rescue procedures have evolved with time, experience and technology development. Today, coal mine rescue teams are still needed and must be continually trained and prepared for any mine emergency. Although it is hoped that improved mine safety policies and practices will eliminate coal mine disasters in the future, accidents remind us that disasters can still happen today. In May 2014, Turkey experienced a severe coal mine disaster where 301 people were killed [G.Tuysuz, 2014]. Our industry must learn from these incidents, focusing on disaster prevention and making improvements in mine rescue operations. Mine rescue procedures differ from country to country due different regulatory environments and different historical evolution of emergency response. Sharing practices and procedures from one country to another enables learning from different experiences and cultural backgrounds. Sharing is also a way of preserving information, identifying and learning best practices."

This paper summarizes the results of the rock mechanics monitoring program performed as part of Old Ben Coal Company's longwall coal mining demonstration project conducted in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The work described herein included installation of instruments, collection of data and data analysis performed during mining of the first longwall panel in Mine No. 24. The rock mechanics monitoring program included both surface and underground instrumentation and was designed to achieve the following purposes: 1 -To provide the capability to observe unusual situations during mining so that remedial measures could be instituted quickly 2 -To formulate design guidelines for future longwall mining efforts; 3 -To evaluate surface subsidence, and its character, rate and potential effects on cultural features, and to develop criteria to assist in predicting subsidence for other mines having similar roof conditions. Six previous attempts with longwall methods in Old Ben Coal Company's Hine 21 had been unsuccessful due to roof control problems. A description of these attempts is given by Moroni (1973). OCCURENCE Occurences of the mineral have been noted in Finland, Switzerland, Russia, Japan, Mexico and in the United States in Texas, California, Arizona, and New York. The only commercial deposit now being exploited is at Willsboro, New York. It is mined and processed by the Cabot Corporation whose home offices are in Boston, Massachusetts.

The discovery of tungsten-bearing quartz outcroppings in Vance County, N. C., by the Hamme brothers in 1942, made international news in the mining industry and was, in fact, one of the major ore discoveries made in the U.S. during the last 25 years. Operations began at the Hamme mine in 1942, but after 16 years of successful operation, the mine was closed down in 1958 under adverse market conditions. By that time, it had produced nearly 20 million lbs of metallic tungsten. Because of the square-set timber mining method then in use, mine operating expenses were high, actually representing 78% of the total operating expenses at the property. In timber work alone, 160 men were employed. Approximately 500,000 bd ft of timber were placed monthly at a direct supply cost of $1.00 per ton of ore mined. Late in 1959, following a slightly improved position in the tungsten market, company management decided that, by changing the mining method, the operation could be economically feasible. The major premise in this decision was that a reduction of from 25 to 30% of the mining costs could be achieved by the conversion of the mining method from square-sets to horizontal cut and fill. Reopening of the mine began in February 1960, Full production has now been reached and overall mine productivity has been doubled.

This study compared particle size distribution and density distribution of crushed products for waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) before and after heat treatment. The crushing process for heat-treated WPCBs is a selective crushing process; more metal is concentrated in the coarse particle range of 1.0–0.5 mm and high density range of 2.8–2.96 g/cm3. WPCBs were separated using the Falcon separator to recycle useful metals. The Box-Behnken module of Design-Expert was used to obtain optimal separation parameters, namely, rotational frequency of 25 Hz, recoil water pressure of 0.025 Mpa and feed speed of 34 ml/s. On this basis, the separation indexes for WPCBs with and without heat treatment were compared. Experimental results show that the recovery effect is better for heat-treatedWPCBs than for thosewithout heat treatment. Comparedwith the non-heattreatedWPCBs, the product grade of heat-treated WPCBs is 1.95% higher, and its recovery is improved by about 14%. Finally, characteristics ofWPCBs before and after heat treatment were analyzed on the basis of stress experiments and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Results of mechanical characterization indicate that the stress experiment for non-heat-treated WPCBs has a maximumpressure load of 212 N and displacement of 20mm, but heat-treatedWPCBs only need 140 N stress and 14 mm displacement. SEM shows that copper foil and fiberglass cloth are deformed in different directions and sizes after heat treatment to form gaps, which promote liberation of copper foil and fiberglass cloth.

"Biodegradation of sodium isopropyl xanthate using two types of bacterial strains, Paenibacillus polymyxa and Pseudomonas putida, is demonstrated. At concentrations higher than 50 mg/L, the presence of xanthate in the growth medium resulted in bacterial toxicity, retarding growth kinetics. Adaptation through serial subculturing in the presence of higher xanthate concentrations resulted in the development of xanthate-tolerant bacterial strains. Stress proteins secreted by bacterial cells grown in the presence of xanthate were isolated. Bacterial cells could utilize xanthate as a growth substrate, degrading xanthate species in the process. Acidic metabolic products generated by bacterial metabolism promoted efficient xanthate decomposition. Probable mechanisms for the biodegradation of isopropyl xanthate are illustrated.IntroductionDifferent types of alkyl xanthates (ethyl, isopropyl, amyl, etc.) have been used as flotation collectors in the concentration of sulfidic ores for several decades. Large quantities of waste water and xanthate-containing effluents are generated by ore flotation processes, posing considerable environmental challenges. Billions of cubic meters of such process waste waters are produced annually across the world, most of which are discharged to the environment, often without any treatment. Leakages and accidental release of xanthate reagents from manufacturing plants and during transportation and storage can also contaminate the environment. Residual concentrations of xanthate reagents are encountered in waste effluent, which are found to be toxic to aquatic life and unfit for human consumption (Harris, 1984; Okibe and Johnson, 2002). Further, direct recycling of such waste waters for plant operations can compromise water quality standards required for process operations. The presence of residual xanthate in recycled waters from flotation plants deleteriously influences flotation processes. Xanthate can be easily decomposed at low pH values; however, CS2, which is more toxic, will be produced by the acidification of neutral and mildly alkaline xanthate-containing solutions. Physico-chemical methods such as flocculation, chemical oxidation and decomposition and physical adsorption used to remove residual collector reagents from mill process waters are often expensive and not environment-friendly (Oliveira and Rubio, 2009; Cheng et al., 2012; Molina et al., 2013,)."

Construction materials indeed face a dilemma...as does the building industry as a whole. A stop & go economy; a severe drop; in housing starts; lingering indecision over just what corrective steps are to be taken or to their degree of commitment; no less basic disagreement in regard to which of the, Nation's problems is really the most pressing -- inflation or recession? Optimism has become a rare quality these days. At moat the cautious view is that this new year will see a long, hard struggle back, with hopes that 1976 at least can truly mark a dual anniversary celebration for the United States and its economic health. Yet the paradox is that once recovery does return, those very construction minerals and materials --which in recent years have experienced the ups and downs of overcapacity, shortage, and now declining demand again-- will once more face the spectre of mass inability to service revived and growing needs for its product. Mounting costs, present marginal expansion investment, and substantial lead times required for new facilities to come into production, could well form a bottleneck to economic upswing. The result again can be another cycle of shortage-induced inflation, and with it continued gyrations within the demand supply relationships of the country's building industries.

THE QUARTETTE Mine near Searchlight, NV, a mine that first operated in the 1890s, could begin processing ore again by September. Jetco Enterprises Inc. plans to work through the tailings and ore close to the surface followed by plans for an openpit mine. It is one of at least three new mining efforts in the region, the Associated Press reported. Another is north of Searchlight, with yet another across the Colorado River in Arizona, east of Bullhead City. Gold mining is rare in southern Nevada. The area generally lacks the rock type that contains gold deposits. Restrictions on federal wilderness areas and protections for the desert tortoise also play a role. Gold veins in the region are generally small and erratic in length and height, Bill Durbin, a geologist and chief of southern Nevada operations for the Nevada Division of Minerals told the Associated Press. L.R. Tad Tinnell, president of Jetco Enterprises, has long eyed the mine. From 1993 to 1995, he explored and drilled on the property, which was still owned by Searchlight Mercantile.

In many multiple-sulphide ore flotation processes, it is desirable to concentrate each of the various valuable minerals into separate products. Although there are a variety of techniques and chemicals which can be employed to produce efficient separation, two basic types of flotation circuits are used: The Differential Flotation Circuit and the Bulk/Selective Flotation Circuit. Figure I depicts these two circuits in their most simplified form for the production of two concentrates and one tailing product. If three or more valuable minerals are present in an ore, a variety of combinations or extensions of these two basic flowsheets may be used. There are many examples of the successful application of both circuit types with ores containing similar minerals. Each ore must be tested individually to decide on which circuit is best. However, the following general statements can be made: 1) The differential circuit will have higher capital and operating costs than will the bulk/selective circuit due to higher rougher capacity requirement. 2) The differential circuit will achieve better separation than will the bulk/selective circuit since it is usually easier to reactivate a depressed mineral than it is to depress an already active mineral. If the deactivation problem with the bulk/selective circuit . . in can be overcome, there is a clear economic argument for its use

Future haulage cost projections led Foster Yeoman Limited into developing a fully mobile crushing and conveying system at its Torr Works quarry in Somerset, England. The purpose-built system has an effective throughput of 2,500 tonnes/hour and features an Orenstein and Koppel (O & K) manufactured walking frame, a Fuller-Traylor type 54 X 74 TC gyratory crusher, and unique mobile conveyor modules designed and manufactured by Foster Yeoman. Used in a single-bench operation in this 6 million-tonne per annum limestone aggregate quarry, the system is fed at the production face by 2 Caterpillar 992C loading shovels. The entire system is moved on a daily basis following production face locations.

The objective of this investigation was to determine the feasibility of using a high-pressure roll mill (HPRM) to improve the separation efficiency of dolomite from apatite in downstream operations when treating high-dolomitic pebbles. High-dolomite samples from four phosphate mines were used for the test program. The research work plan included sample characterization studies; INSTRON tests to develop preliminary crushing data; high-pressure roll mill evaluations to determine crushing parameters, such as feed rates, rolls speed and gap, and applied torque, pressure and energy; and screen, microscopy, and flotation studies to assess dolomitelapatite separation efficiency. The results of the HPRM tests show that commercial products for all four mines can be obtained. Recoveries of 74-82% of the P2O5 and rejections of 46-83% of the MgO were reported with an specific energy consumption of 0.2-0.5 of that of a laboratory rod mill.

Durability risks for underground facilities can be underestimated during design phase as compared to well-known geological risks. However, unclear durability requirements can result in construction schedule delay and change orders. Unlike bridges or buildings, a unified underground durability code or standard does not exist. This paper will provide a durability approach for underground facilities, including degradation modes, mitigations, and compliance measures during construction. In addition, this paper will address how to clearly specify durability requirements in a contract document to reduce disputes during construction and discuss key durability tests that are time consuming and will impact construction schedule if not timely planned.

The unit-train concept of moving raw materials .is considered by many railroad men as the most signifigant contribution to reducing rail freight costs since the introduction of the diesel locomotive. The idea, which involves assigning railroad equipment to only one haul and keeping the equipment rolling results in the maximum utilization of equipment. For example before the unit train was plaged in servige on coal hauled to one of Mid. Continent's customers, about 900 cars and 9 locomotives were needed to move the coal requirements for this plant, compared with. 250 cars and 6 locomotives used by the present scheduling of unit trains. If the economics of unit-train movements are to be achieved, coal companies no longer can use railroad cars as small storage bins on wheels to accumulate their coal in trainload shipments, but, rather, must build large bins which incorporate facilities for the rapid loading of railroad cars in a minimum length of time. In this manner railroad equipment is operated at a high degree of efficiency 'with consequent dollar savings. After negotiations between Mid-Continent, the customers and the Railroad, it was decided a unit train loadout and storage facility at Carbondale was required in order to reduce the delivered price of coal to the customers and thereby contribute to the reduction in the cost of manufacturing steel. Carbondale was selected as the bin site location, because the cost of constructing a railroad to Redstone could not be justified for the tonnages anticipated.

Using powerful database management software, nested-field analysis and microanalysis of narratives have been made of West Virginia accident data, resulting in a new approach for targeting and prioritizing safety interventions by county, mine size, specific mine, job title, type injury, etc. and combinations of these parameters. The analyses have been useful in focusing training and discussion sessions on specific work problems, trends, conditions, and situations for targeted groups of miners. Application of the technique will be presented in this paper, along with comparisons of various mine performance measures.
