In spite of potential theoretical and economic advantages of large-diameter ball mills, many manufacturers elect not to build these mills owing to what is perceived as an excessively large design risk. This risk results from the fact that traditional predictions for mill-scale-up to large diameters are not always accurate. It is apparent that alternative methods of analysis and scale-up are required. Recent studies have shown that detailed population balance models which account for important grinding subprocesses, i.e., grinding kinetics, material transport, and classification, are capable of predicting the performance of small- and intermediate diameter mills (up to 4.3 m (14 ft)) from small-scale batch tests. These same models are used in the current study to predict the performance of a "borderline" large ball mill (4.7x5.5 m) at Asarco's Sacaton operation, a ball mill (5.0x5.8 m) at Kennecott's Chino operation, and one of the world's largest ball mills (5.5x6.1 m), at Cities Service Pinto Valley operation. Model parameters required for scale-up have been estimated in a 380-mm diameter batch mill. Predictions are compared with the results of detailed plant sampling in the three plants. For the Sacaton and Chino operations, the error of the predictions was found to be less than 2.5%, while the corresponding error for the Pinto Valley operation was less than 2.7%. It is concluded that proper representation of the major subprocesses of grinding in the model equation is the key to achieving accurate scale-up. Of special importance is the need to account for the size distribution of the grinding media and the influence of the size distribution environment in the mill on grinding kinetics.

The mining workforce experiences high rates of hazardous noise exposure and hearing loss. However, previous studies have identified specific behavioral and attitudinal barriers that keep miners from effectively acting to prevent their own hearing loss. NIOSH has developed several new hearing loss prevention tools and interventions that specifically target these barriers to prevention. The NIOSH Hearing Loss Simulator addresses motivation to take action and knowledge about the consequences of noise exposure. The QuickFit earplug test device and QuickFitWeb online hearing protection tester address barriers to effective earplug and earmuff use by verifying at least 15 decibels of protection. The NIOSH Roll-Pull-Hold technique helps miners obtain better protection through an easy-to-remember set of steps that improves attenuation by 9 decibels. The ?Inquiring Ears Want to Know? fact sheet helps miners to understand audiograms and to use them to maintain their hearing health. Each of these interventions can be used within the context of a comprehensive hearing loss prevention program.

The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative-Metal Mining Sector (ADTI-MMS) has established a Pit Lake Committee to enhance the science and understanding for the long-term management of pit lakes. Participation in this new committee is from members of federal and state agencies, industry, and academia, including numerous individuals representing 10 states. Work has begun on a pit lake literature search and review, database, classification, and sampling and monitoring procedures document. Coordination with the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) has been established. Future work will include preparing a prediction and assumption verification document, a report identifying variables upon which water quality is dependent, and an applied remediation technologies document, including an evaluation of the effects of backfilling.

Stillwater Mining Company’s, Nye Operation has been producing PGM concentrate since 1987.Several expansions have allowed for increasing capacity from the initial rate of 500 tons per day, to its present capacity of 3,000 tons per day. The expansions were performed with minimal impact upon production and maximum utilization of the existing equipment. The latest expansion incorporates a 6’ X 18’ SAG mill, 13’ X 20’ Ball mill, pebble crusher, rougher flotation cells, 1250 Hp tertiary grinding mill, middling and scavenger flotation cells, and cleaner column flotation cells. This paper will describe the concentrator flow sheet, and controls for improved concentrator performance.

Sufco coal mine, a subsidiary of Arch Western Bituminous Group, recently purchased a reverse osmosis (RO) system. The systems intent was to remove impurities in the water being mixed with the hydraulic oil to maintain the viability of critical longwall hydraulic systems and to prevent degradation. This project not only ensured hydraulic components from corrosion, but also revealed a cost savings by reducing the percentage of hydraulic oil mixed with the RO water. SUFCO WATER TREATMENT HISTORY Sufco coal mine has been in operation for approximately 70 years. Old works extend up to 15 miles one way, not including adjacent mined out longwall panels. Due to the geologic conditions and strata, water treatment has been as simple as putting water in at a high point of a mined out area and recovering it at a low point to discharge. Doing this reduces the total suspended solids (TSS) to less than 25 parts per million (ppm) and the total dissolved solids (TDS) less than 1,200 ppm which complies with Sufco?s water discharge permit. Even though the requirements for the permit were met, the water is still corrosive in nature. A portion of this water is piped back into the fireline (makeup) water system. It is then boosted to pressures of up to 500 psi to support mining sections, belt systems, equipment, fire fighting systems and the longwall.

The research examines the performance of uncoated and coated tungsten carbide-cobalt rock cutting bits. It aims to optimize process variables (cutting speed, depth, coating material) considering multiple output responses (cutting forces, specific energy, wear rate, material removed, angle of reaction forces). The study uses a hybrid optimization technique combining Taguchi design, grey relational analysis, and fuzzy logic. The optimal parameter combination was found to be cutting speed: 200 mm/s, cutting depth: 6 mm, and titanium aluminum silicon nitride coating.

INTRODUCTION A major function of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Denver Safety and Health Technology Center (DSHTC), Ventilation Branch, is to provide engineering analyses of underground mine¬ ventilation systems for coal, metal, and nonmetal in¬spection departments in accordance with field surveys and data analyses. Health and safety problems such as the control of diesel contaminants, dust, methane, radon, and radon daughters all are dependent upon ventilation. It is necessary for the ventilation engineers at DSHTC to have a complete understanding of the various and highly complex ventilation systems used in the nation's mines. Only through the proper assembly and analysis of data can the engineer determine the causes of prob¬lems and make suitable recommendations. Furthermore, the engineer must have the ability to predict the results of any such recommendations. In the study of the ventilation system at any indi¬vidual mine, it is common practice to collect data on airflow quantities and pressures at key points throughout the mine. However, these data give only a single point¬-in-time view of the system. As the mine develops and progresses, the system undergoes numerous changes; as the mine becomes more extensive, the ventilation re¬quirements increase, and the costs rise. For proper utilization of the available resources, it is necessary for the engineer to have a sound engineering basis for deci¬sions on how best to ventilate the mine. To evaluate the system as a whole, particularly re¬garding possible system changes, it has become necessary to rely on computers to perform the calculations in¬volved in analyzing the network. This chapter sum¬marizes the implementation of such computer capabili¬ties at DSHTC, as well as the services that are available from DSHTC. ANALOG SIMULATIONS AND ANALYSES OF VENTILATION NETWORKS As early as 1954, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) in Pittsburgh, PA, was using an analog computer as an aid in analyzing ventilation systems. The Mcllroy Fluid Network Analyzer used filament-tube resistance elements and an electrical power supply to simulate mine-ventila¬tion systems electrically. This system is shown in Fig. 1. Analog simulation has proven to be a practical tool, providing fast analyses of complicated problems after the initial setup has been completed. Advancements in electronic technology over the past 24 years have made possible the construction of an analog computer that has streamlined several operating features of the previous machines. The DSHTC Ventilation Branch now has an improved electronic analog computer to assist in the analyses of ventilation systems. General Features As shown in Fig. 2, the analog computer used at the DSHTC Ventilation Branch has three "element" cabi¬ nets, a console, and a printer. The cabinets contain the fan elements and the airway-resistance elements that are used to "program" an analysis problem; each element is independent of the others. The console contains the "patchboard" and the controls necessary to operate the analog computer. The patchboard connects the inde¬pendent elements into the circuit appropriate for simu¬lating the ventilation system. The total system is controlled from a panel on the console, while the value corresponding to each element is set on the individual controls located on the face of each element. The control panel has three visual output displays that give the quantity of flow, the pressure of the output junction with respect to a datum, and the differential pressure across each element. The control panel also allows manual selection of the element to be monitored, or automatic scanning and printing of values for the entire system. Capabilities The analog computer can simulate an existing mine¬-ventilation network. This is accomplished by collecting field data at the mine to give a complete pressure-¬quantity network. Resistance values for each airway branch may be determined from the quantity of flow in the branch and from the pressure differential between the end-point junctions of the branch. The basic rela¬tonship to determine the resistance is expressed as: H=R •Q2 where H is the pressure differential, R is the resistance, and Q is the quantity of air in the flow. After the resistance values are known for all of the airways in the circuit, the elements on the analog com¬puter can be set to the corresponding values. Risk assessment of mining projects is a requirement in the mineral industries. In this process, many risk variables are timedependent, and the only available data are historical time series. Moreover, in the case of a multivariate scenario, conventional forecasting methods fail to capture conditional dependency across the variables, which is important when there is an underlying causal relationship that needs to be modeled for accurate project evaluation. Thus, we investigated the use of copulas to capture the conditional distribution of the factors involved in a mine risk assessment study. We employed a multivariate copula-based time-series approach to model several uncertain variables. The Autoregressive Fractionally Integrated Moving Average - Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (ARFIMA-GARCH) model was used for the conditional mean and copulas were used to model the error distribution, thus capturing the collective variation and dependence pattern across the variables. The method was implemented to model gold prices, copper prices, and the 10-year US Treasury bond yields and to determine the project’s net present value and probability of being economically feasible. The proposed approach can be used for cases where simulation of multivariate time-series is conducted.

Estimated natural zeolite production worldwide during 2004 remained at about 3.6 Mt (4 million st), about the same as in 2003. China continues to be the largest producer of natural zeolites followed by Cuba, Germany, Japan and South Korea. This may be changing, however. Since 1988, zeolite production from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines and Thailand has increased rapidly. Most of the production is consumed in aqua culture. Global demand for seafood has exceeded the ability of the oceans to supply it without over fishing. Zeolite minerals remove ammonia compounds from the ponds in which fish and shrimp are grown. It is estimated that, in Thailand and Indonesia more than 55,000 farms produce260 kt (286,500 st) of shrimp. Therefore, as shrimp production increases, so does zeolite consumption.

A large portion of the energy consumed in copper concentrators is used to reduce the particle size of the feed by crushing and grinding. The cost of metal production could be reduced if low-grade particles of cm size were removed prior to further processing. Two copper sulfide ore samples (3 × 1 cm) from Arizona were analyzed by micro X-ray computed tomography (Micro-XCT) to determine the grade of copper sulfide in each particle. For copper ore sample A, a significant number of particles contained very low amounts of copper, while some particles had copper sulfide grains of mm size. Based on Micro-XCT, it was expected that 85% of the copper for sample A could be recovered at 65% of mass rejection during preconcentration by sorting. However, in sample B (a different copper ore), distribution of copper sulfide was dispersed primarily in each ore particle, so for the particle size class of 3 × 1 cm, liberation of copper sulfide and gangue minerals was not significant. In view of the XCT results, dual energy (DE) X-ray radiography was used as a basis for sorting. Previous DE X-ray radiography of a drill core sample demonstrated that this rapid detection method can be used to identify rich or poor Cu-bearing coarse particles. Pilot scale X-ray sorting of sample A (10 × 1 cm) showed 31% rejection of a 0.08% Cu gangue product with a corresponding recovery of 90% copper.

The new, 2.600 m long pipe under the river Elbe in Hamburg/Germany required for 2 traffic lanes, emergency lane and space for utilities a boring diameter of 14,20 m(46,6 ft). According the geology (glacial deposits consisting of clay, sand and marl, all containing big boulders) a Slurry-Shield with crusher was selected. With a minimum cover of 7 m and a maximum pressure of 5,6 bar extensive ground treatment was necessary to make the drive feasible. The machine contains a lot of new developments. The drive was finished in spring 2000 so all experiences can be reported. A special risk sharing contract avoided completely litigation.

Mining activity in the Segovia region in NE Colombia is the main source of employment in the local economy. This has created major problems of illegality and informality mining associated with a high social and environmental impact, as inefficient technologies are used and high consumption of toxic substances required in the process of gold recovery by amalgamation and cyanidation. In this work is presented mineralogical characterization of six local mills and studied beneficiation processes developed in them. With the results presented a proposed plant design that eliminates the use of mercury by replacing gravity concentration processes taking advantage of the characteristics of the treated material. Significant results were obtained regarding the recovery of precious metals and present a methodology that can be replicated in other mineral beneficiation plants that use gold amalgamation processes. This implies a significant reduction in mercury use and decreased risk of human contamination associated with this.

Soda ash is the trade name for sodium carbonate, a chemical refined from the mineral trona or naturally occurring sodium carbonate-bearing brines (both referred to as natural soda ash) or manufactured from one of several chemical processes (referred to as synthetic soda ash). It is an essential raw material in glass, chemicals, detergents and other important industrial products. Production U.S. soda ash production during 2004 increased to10.9 million Mt (12 million st). Five companies comprised the domestic soda ash industry. Four were in Wyoming operating five plants. One was in California with one plant.

Monitoring and control of conventional industrial wet grinding circuits is conceptually straightforward. However, since production objectives and operating constraints can vary widely from plant to plant, there is probably no single overall grinding circuit control strategy which is "best" in all cases; in-variably some compromise is necessary between performance desired under ideal conditions and performance achievable in practice. The recent advent of relatively low cost, reliable, high speed small computer systems is revolutionizing daily operations in increasing numbers of metallurgical processing plants. Of special power and capability is a hierarchical computer network like that currently in use at the Pinto Valley Operations of the Cities Service Company. Several satellite processors for key plant areas communicate with a master computer operating under a powerful multitasking real-time operating system. Hardware and software structure is such that downtime on one of the processors -including the master -does not have a major impact on overall system operation. Admittedly, the powerful, core efficient table driven satellite software, which handles process/computer communication, calculation of nonmeasured process variables, and basic Direct Digital Control functions, is difficult to modify. However, important high level process monitoring, report preparation, graphic display, and supervisory control functions -including economic optimization -can be implemented by project engineers at the plant site. Thus, for example, new control strategies can be quickly examined and rapidly evaluated. Such computer monitoring capability also permits use of short duration process pulse tests for approximate dynamic modeling and rapid calculation of controller tuning constants for single loop dominant systems. Following a brief back-ground discussion of the Pinto Valley Project, we present some of the more interesting results and conclusions of our work over the past year.

The stability and integrity of protective coal pillars between the longwall working face and development roadways are greatly affected by the mining activities such as the development face advancing or retreat mining. Due to underground strata pressure, the coal pillar cracks could be further developed and then the air leakage passages (mainly cracks) could be produced greatly. The air circulation caused by the atmospheric pressure difference between the two sides of the coal pillar may also provide suitable conditions for the possible spontaneous combustion of the residual coal in the mine gob. In this paper, a typical the protective coal pillar in a Chinese coal mine is studied. The deformation and stress of coal pillars during the mining process of longwall working face are simulated by using FLAC3D. The displacement and strain of coal pillars are analyzed. Two indexes, the linear fracture rate (LFR) and area fracture rate (AFR), are introduced to characterize the development of internal cracks’ development within coal pillars. By using field measurement, the air leakage intensity distribution due to coal pillar cracks is obtained; the equation of air leakage resistance of coal pillar under the influence of mining is derived. Then, the possible location of large air leakage of coal pillar is determined, which can be used as guidelines to study the possibilities of coal spontaneous combustions happening in pillar or mine gob. The research results help to control such potential hazards in advance.

"Location: The Menominee district has been described geologically in several units, because the known iron-bearing formations of the larger region are not a really connected. From the commercial and mining standpoint, however, the district em¬braces, all that territory extending from a point about five miles east of Vulcan to a point a few miles west of Iron River, an east-west distance of about fifty miles, and from a line about two miles south of Vulcan to one ten miles north of Crystal Falls, a north-south distance of about thirty-five miles. This area is largely in the State of Michigan, but includes more than two hundred square miles in Florence County, Wisconsin. The chief towns of the district are Vulcan, Iron Mountain, Iron River, and Crystal Falls, in Michigan, and . Florence in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin portion of the district has not produced a large portion of the output of the area.History: The earliest reports of iron ore in the Menominee district were made by J. W. Foster and S. W. Hill, who conducted a geological exploration from Lake Superior to Green Bay in the fall of 1848. It is a remarkable fact that in spite of their plain statements regarding their discoveries, these state¬ments were apparently forgotten for a period of nearly twenty years. Foster states that ""about two miles southeast of the lower falls (of the Twin Falls on the Menominee River) near Sec. 30, T. 40 N., R. 30 W. there is a large bed of specular iron ore associated with the talcose and argillaceous slates. It makes its appearance on the north side of the Lake and can be traced a mile and a half in length and in places is exposed one hundred feet in width."""

Bulk and differential laboratory flotation tests have been carried out using a synthetic mixture of chalcopyrite and molybdenum ore. In addition to boiling and roasting, six different depressants are tested so that the best conditions of separation can be identified. These reagents include sodium cyanide with and without zinc sulfate, potassium ferrocyanide, sodium hydrosulfide, arsenic Noke's reagent, and sodium sulfide. The data indicate that most of these reagents are effective chalcopyrite depressants. However, sodium hydrosul fide can be used preferably if economic, operational, and environmental factors are taken into consideration.
