The major waste product of the alkaline extraction of alumina from bauxite [Bayer Process] is known as red-mud. Approximately, a ton of red-mud is produced for every two tons of bauxite mined. The red-mud produced from Jamaican bauxite is rich in hematite, alumina and titanium oxide. It has been shown that over 90-wt. pct. alumina can be recovered from red-mud by soda-ash sintering and caustic leaching. Hematite can be carbothermically reduced with a degree of metallization of over 94 pct resulting in attempts for magnetic separation. These separations are desirable in the notion that there is no waste product generated from this type of processing and consequently an opportunity for complete utilization of the waste material. Conversely, the pre-separated material could be charged through the tuyeres in an iron blast furnace or smelted to produce pig iron. If smelted, the concentration of titanium oxide in the slag will be significantly high justifying its recovery by established acid-leach process. This paper describes the results of alumina recovery and the plans for titanium oxide recovery from red-mud. In addition, the situation of ongoing efforts in iron extraction, particularly, the method of magnetic separation of the reduced material. The problems associated with the use of reduced red-mud as an alternative to direct-reduced iron [DRI] has also been discussed. Critical assessment of the recovery sequence chosen for the products has been described based on economics.

During the 1980s, a revolution has been taking place in industrial minerals marketing. Transportation deregulation and a handful of creative marketing and distribution managers have completely changed the rules for marketing many industrial minerals. Minerals are being transported much farther than in prior decades and at much less cost. Bulk and package terminals are becoming increasingly common as a means to take advantage of freight rate savings and to provide enhanced service to faraway customers. Water and rail transportation are being used increasingly to penetrate markets considered unreachable just a few years ago. No longer do the textbook rules of thumb for industrial minerals marketing apply. This author recalls three of those rules he was taught in mineral economics graduate school in the 1970s. As recorded in class notes: • construction aggregates are seldom shipped more than 32 km (20 miles) from the quarry; • cement is sold within 240 km (150 miles) of the mill; and • industrial sand is sold regionally - it is freight constrained to a market radius of no more than 320 to 400 km (200 to 250 miles) from the plant. And yet, the author looks up in 1989 and observes overland movements of aggregates of many hundred miles, overland movements of cement and industrial sand of 1600 km (1000 miles) or more, and water movements of both aggregates and cement into the United States from sources halfway around the world. Truly, industrial minerals are in the midst of a marketing revolution. The companies that have led this revolution have enjoyed considerable financial success in the 1980s. They have enhanced their profitability by increasing market share, capacity utilization, and average selling prices by taking product to remote markets where premium prices are available. They have consistently outperformed their competition, many of whom remain unaware that the marketing revolution going on around them is actually a transportation/distribution revolution. The successful industrial minerals company of the next 10 to 15 years must participate in the transportation revolution as it continues to evolve. Microseismic monitoring and evaluation is one aspect of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research program. Roof falls are often preceded by a period of elevated microseismic activity, but not all periods of elevated activity result in a roof fall, nor do all roof falls occur after some amount of elevated activity. The objective of this study is to review periods of elevated microseismic activity and determine whether fracture activity rate can be used to anticipate the initiation of roof falls. The study was carried out at an underground limestone mine where major roof falls are associated with excessive horizontal stress. The progression of roof falls was detected by the microseismic signature produced by the rock falling from the mine roof onto the mine floor, which is termed a roof fall impact event. A total of nine elevated fracture activity periods that resulted in seven major roof falls were examined. It was observed that elevated fracture activity preceded the initial roof fall impact event in three out of four major roof falls. The initial impact event was not identified for the remaining three roof falls. Fracture event rates were analyzed and a roof fall alarm trigger of five fracture events in a ten minute time period was established for this test case. The fall alarm trigger was tested against six of the elevated activity periods. Four roof falls occurred in the six periods of elevated activity, and two would have triggered the alarm before the roof fall occurred, while two false alarms were generated. The results show that limited success would have been achieved by the microseismic system as a roof fall alarm trigger. However, the trigger would have been successful at warning of the onset of elevated activity, allowing mine employees to respond appropriately. The study highlighted some issues with implementing such a system in an operating mine, including the need for real time identification of fracture related microseismic signals among mining induced signals, and accurate location and identification of fracture clustering.

Six decades ago, the most dangerous job in the USA was mining coal underground. Roof falls were responsible for half of the deaths, killing about 100 miners every year. Fast forward to 2016 and zero roof fall fatalities. Just three miners were killed by roof falls during the following 6 years. How did the mining community achieve this historic goal? This paper starts by analyzing the roof fall fatalities in 1968, categorizing them by their fundamental cause. Then, it shows how each type of roof fall was reduced over time, using snapshots of the fatalities occurring in subsequent decades. Along the way, it evaluates the influence of the regulatory environment, changing mining methods, and better ground control technology. The study found that in 1968 more than half of roof fall fatalities at large mines were attributable to an inadequate safety culture. The immediate effect of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act was to reduce the riskiest activities, like needlessly going under unsupported roof. Other hazards, like large roof falls, required technological developments before they were brought under control. Roof Control Plans, which the US Bureau of Mines had been advocating since the 1920s, played a significant role throughout the process.

Over the past several decades, cement-based grouts using ultrafine cement as are placement for portland cement have begun to gain acceptance as an alternative to chemical solution grouts, however the amount of information currently available on these grouts is limited. For this reason, the authors developed a field testing program to evaluate the penetration capabilities of various ultrafine cement grout mixes. The tests were conducted by injecting sand columns using different portland and ultrafine based grouts, the measuring penetration distances after applying equal injection pressure for the same time period. Results of tests performed in 1999 and 2000 are discussed herein.

The mining industry responded to public concerns about use of cyanide by developing a voluntary certification to allow companies to demonstrate their commitment. The International Cyanide Code (Code) establishes standards for the manufacture, transportation and use of cyanide. Key concepts in closure planning to comply with the Code are to decommission all facilities related to cyanide operations and to provide a financial assurance mechanism for those activities. Code requirements may differ from state-specific regulations, but requirements are based on closure goals for protection of the human health and the environment. Only issues related to cyanide operations are required to be included in decommissioning demonstrations. For example, the disposal method of cyanide solution holding tanks and the cost must be included in the closure plan, but information regarding closure of roads is not required. Closure costs must be based on a third-party contractor as opposed to internal budgets. Compliance with the closure requirements of the Code allows companies to show their stockholders, lending institutions, and the public that their operations are environmentally responsible.

Grate discharges historically outnumbered the overflow type of industrial wet ball mills. However, overflow discharge mills now strongly dominate. In order to understand their comparative advantages and disadvantages, Corem carried out a broad review of this topic. Where the data made it possible, the Functional Performance Equation was used to separate circuit classification from mill grinding effects. Batch tests were conducted in a torque-metered mill at different slurry levels. This paper presents the outcome of these investigations, which is a very strong case for the industry to once again consider grate discharges.

Introduction Caverns of 50 m in linear dimension at depths below 2300 m with a life of more than 25 years are proposed for the next generation of water-filled neutrino detectors. Little precedent exists for excavations in such an extreme environment, although some guidance is available from mining experience at great depths, for example, in South Africa, in Canada and at the former Homestake Mine in the U.S.A. Unlike mining for ore, there are choices available in the construction of such caverns that may mean the difference between success and failure. These choices should be informed by rock engineering principles. Recently proposed guidelines for orientation of brick-shaped caverns where the long dimension is a small multiple of the short dimension indicate that the most favorable orientation is with the long and short dimensions parallel to major and minor preexcavation principal stresses (Pariseau, 2005). Numerical analyses at reduced strength indicate some yielding at cavern walls should be expected but that an equilibrium state is quite possible and is aided by arching the back into a spherical dome when the cavern is an empty cylinder (Tesarik and others, 2002). The same indications of stability occur with brick-shaped caverns. However, the most dangerous situation occurs during the excavation sequence to final cavern dimensions. There are any number of excavation sequences that lead to the same final cavern shape, so there is an opportunity to partially optimize the sequence with construction guidelines that minimize peak stress concentrations during construction. This contribution discusses three practical excavation sequences that lead to the same brick-shaped cavern in the strong, massive Yates formation at the Homestake Mine where considerable rock mechanics data has accumulated through the years(e.g., Pariseau, 1985, Pariseau and others, 1995) and where actual mining on the 8000 Level indicates a strong possibility of successful investment in the next generation of large, deep neutrino detectors. The main results are: (1) a favorable brick-shape is one with dimensions in the same proportion as the preexcavation principal stresses (compressionpositive), and (2) favorable orientation of the most extreme but temporary shape of excavation is also best for the construction sequence. Analysis results from a mix of Homestake Mine data and possible excavation geometry illustrate the advantages of these guidelines.

INTRODUCTION Measurement of certain data associated with nuclear testing necessitates the reception of waves at the instrument location which are unaffected by reflection off internal structures or tunnel surfaces. Therefore, in order to provide necessary facilities for the fielding of experiments in support of the underground nuclear testing program, the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) commissioned a cost and feasibility evaluation pertaining to the design and construction of large underground cavities in Rainier Mesa. The effort included research into past experience pertaining to the excavation and support of large underground caverns, assessment of the geological conditions which exist in Rainier Mesa, preliminary design of the chambers and their rock support systems based upon the geological setting, development of mining plans for the excavation of the caverns, and estimation of the cost and manpower schedule to complete construction. This paper summarizes the results of the feasibility evaluation. The investigation was limited to modified hemispherical configurations ranging in size from 24.4 to 91.4 m (80 to 300 ft) in diameter. Two cavity support systems were considered. The first employs internally installed rockbolts as the means of primary rock support while the second involves the use of annular tendon galleries located above the chambers from which primary support members are introduced prior to general excavation. The internal support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 24.4, 36.6, 48.8, and 54.9 m (80, 120, 160, and 180 ft) while the external support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 54.9, 73.2, and 91.4 m (180, 240 and 300 ft).

Surface coal mining in West Virginia has supplied energy to the eastern coast of the United States for over a century. The coal mining industry has been forced to adapt as societal demands regarding health, safety, and environmental impacts have changed with time. More recent pressure has called for another iteration of change: long-term post-mining sustainability. The research presented in this paper investigates one potential solution?or component of a solution?to improve mining sustainability in Appalachia: post-mining wind power. This paper intends to demonstrate and explain the feasibility of synergistic mine closure and wind development. Wind conditions at three reclaimed mine sites in West Virginia were monitored in order to develop representative case studies for post-mining wind power. This paper contains a summary of the literature consulted to plan the site assessments, the methodology employed to execute them, the analysis steps undertaken to derive conclusions, and a discussion of all findings. This research has found that significant cost savings can be yielded from synergistic mine closure and wind development, as compared to greenfield wind development. Though wind conditions themselves remain the primary driver for site feasibility, post-mining wind power is a practice with significant promise for improving project economics, contributing to renewable energy development, enhancing company-community relations, providing local employment opportunities, and exemplifying sustainable business practices in Appalachia.

Part of a major sewer expansion for the City of Columbus, Ohio. The Big Walnut Outfall Augmentation Sewer (BWOAS) consists of 4,000m (13,200 ft) of 3.66m (12 ft)diameter tunnel passing mainly through glacial deposits with a water head of up to 2 bar. The project involves many new innovations, including: Slurry wall work shaft with excavation below the water table; Hybrid universal rings combining traditional steel reinforcement with fibers; New, full EPB Lovat TBM; Two component grout system pumped to the TBM from the surface; and, Linabond corrosion protection liner. The paper looks at the planning approach adopted to meet the various challenges presented, combined with an overview of progress to date.

The slurry wall technique has undergone an evolution from its invention to its today’s status. In the early stages slurry walls were built with cable grab, later on with much stronger hydraulic grab and last but not least with the use of the cutter technique. The cutter allows thick walls with high verticality to extreme depths through hard soil and rock formations. With the rising demand of the construction of watertight diaphragm walls different joint systems have been developed. In addition to the rapid development of excavation systems it was necessary to improve slurry treatment and desanding plants, especially in conjunction with high performance trench cutters. Deep mixing methods can be used economically for the construction of cut-off or excavation support walls where other systems such as traditional soldier beams and lagging walls would yield unsatisfactory performance, where the installation of vibrated or driven sheet piles could cause vibration induced settlements and where concrete diaphragm walls would be time consuming and expensive. The new CSM method can largely replace the more conventional single or multiple auger methods of soil mixing or jet grouting. The cutter tool is similar to a cutter used in diaphragm walls or cut-off walls and is operated with a Kelly mounted on a drilling rig or rope suspended on a crane jib or mast of a base carrier. With this system much deeper walls can be installed and even hard soil layers can be penetrated.

This section of the Handbook deals with general principles to be evaluated in the development of a mining operation. It addresses the major issues that must be examined to fully evaluate a mining venture. Of course, one of the main topics to be evaluated is mine planning, which is covered in more detail in other sections (13, 17) of the Handbook and should be referenced in mine development projects. The topics to be discussed in this introduction include equipment and supplies, infrastructure, utilities, and project management. In any of the aspects mentioned, the current existing conditions at or near the mine site must be evaluated. This will include assessment of current use of utilities, infrastructure, housing, equipment suppliers, etc., as well as anticipated growth, both in the supply aspect of these systems as well as projected usage on these systems. After full assessment of both these aspects, an evaluation must be made as to the requirements the project will place on these items. Assessment must be made as to any up-grades required to bring the project on line, what impact the project will have on existing or expanded systems, and anticipated future growth impacts on support systems not only of the project but of other surrounding industry and urban devel-opment

The gold content of porphyry copper deposits ranges from less than 0.05 g/t to more than I g/t ((0.0017 to 0.035 oz per st) and the average is about 0.05 g/t (0.0017 oz per st) gold. Perhaps the highest grade mineralization found near a porphyry cop¬per deposit is the Ok Tedi Gold Cap ore body whose grade falls in the 2 to 3 g/t (0.07 to 0.1 oz per st) range. It is difficult to define a gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposit. All porphyry copper ore bodies contain some gold, but there seems to be a fairly sharp break in the gold content at about 0.1 g/t (0.003 oz per st) gold. There is also a problem in identifying dis¬seminated gold deposits that may have an indirect relationship to porphyry copper systems. This relationship is clear cut in deposits such as the Ok Tedi Gold Cap, the El Hueso deposit, the Fortitude and West de¬posits at Battle Mountain, NV, and the Sur¬prise deposit at Ely, NV. There are many other bulk disseminated, epithermal-type gold deposits - McCoy, NV, for example - that might be related to a porphyry system but where this relationship is remains very uncertain. In such places as the Goldfields and Tonapah district in Ne¬vada and in the El Indio, Chile district, there may be a vertically stacked ore deposit rela¬tionship between near surface epithermal deposits and disseminated molybdenite and chalcopyrite enargite mineralization at depth that may represent a deep porphyry system. This, however, has not been positively demonstrated. Most of the bulk epithermal gold deposits are probably not related to porphyry copper systems. Exceptions would probably be Ok Tedi, El Indio, El Hueso, Battle Mountain, and Lepanto where vertical or lateral zoning relationships are more apparent. This author believes that porphyry copper systems are related to a relatively unique type of intrusion that is probably distinct from, for example, the McCoy intrusivebody. For that reason, deposits such as McCoy, Chimney Creek, and the like will not be included in the definition of gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposits for this article. The interpretation of the origin of several of the deposits previously mentioned are subject to an unusual amount of contro¬versy. Magnetic metals are the granddaddy of products which may be recovered from municipal waste. Aside from hand-picking of newsprint and corrugated boxes, magnetic metals are usually the first items a resource recovery facility considers extracting from the solid waste stream. Magnetic metals from incinerator residues and from municipally mandated source segregation programs were first used in significant quantities by the Copper Industry. The ability of the Copper Industry to consume metals from the municipal solid waste stream raised everyone's hopes that there would be more markets for municipal scrap when more of it became available. Somehow something has gone wrong. It is widely acclaimed that scrap is an environmentally sound and economical source of iron. It is greatly in demand for Its contained energy. The prices that the steel industry has been willing to pay for the scrap during the past year are all the proof anyone should need that scrap Is desirable and sought after. But the very fact that I'm speaking today on the markets for magnetic metals recovered from municipal waste indicates that something Is wrong. Clearly the problem is not that we do not need the scrap. The problem is we have not produced the kind of scrap that consumers are willing to buy - either through ignorance of what the consumers wanted or through a conviction that ferrous scrap is so obviously a good thing somebody will surely want it no matter what. Dr. Harvey Alter of the National Center for Resource Recovery has said "You can't sell garbage". In a sense that is only partly true. It really should be "You can't sell garbage for very long". The Steel Companies, in an effort to prove that steel is an environmentally desirable packaging medium, have bought some scrap that can only be described as garbage. They are to be commended for doing so. The fault lies not with the Steel Company for taking and paying for "garbage" but with the producer of that poorly prepared scrap. Far every instance where the steel industry has purchased the often undesirable product from resource recovery facility there are several magnetic installations sitting Idle because someone forgot the most essential part of producing the magnetic product - selling it to someone.

Large scale surface coal mining will be required to fill future energy demand in the United States. In realization of this long-term commitment to coal resources, the U.S. Energy Re-search and Development Administration sponsored a study to determine the costs and problems of large-scale surface coal mining. As a result of this study a series of computer models were developed that can be used by government and industry to: 1) facilitate mine design and equipment selection, 2) provide detailed analyses of mining and processing costs. Two types of models were developed: detailed simulation models, which provide detailed information on mining systems and equipment to assist in mine design and equipment selection1 and broad models, which provide a first-order evaluation of deposits and new ventures for an entire mining complex. The complete model series permits examination of surface coal mining under a variety of terrain conditions. Six different mining methods were analyzed and documented during the overall project: 1) Area stripping with draglines, 2) Area stripping with draglines, extended bench, 3) Contour stripping with draglines, 4) Area stripping with shovels (loaders) and trucks, 5) Mountain top removal with shovels (loaders) and trucks, 6) Multiple dipping seam mining with shovels (loaders) and trucks. Each major operation in the coal mining pro-cess is represented in these models so that the best methods and equipment may be selected and 50 that the impact of such selection will be reflected in estimates of capital investment, operating costs, and coal price. Individual models allow the user to separately analyze overburden removal, overburden drilling and blasting, coal drilling and blasting, coal loading and hauling, coal preparation and handling, land reclamation, and premining, facilities, and administrative expenses. Because it is impossible to cover all the models in this paper, only the detailed simulation models representative of the technique "area stripping with draglines," are described. The Fort Union Strippable Coal Resource Region, one of eight test cases, is used as an example to describe the models.

Each year, hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s two phase implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system. Phase one is the installation of a proof-of-concept system at a concrete batch plant, while phase two involves scaling up the system to include additional sensors, more detailed safety/performance metrics, proximity detection, and predictive failure analysis.

INTRODUCTION Soft, near normally consolidated clays generally provide ideal conditions for tunneling using Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) shields. It is easy to turn the clay into a low permeability, viscous spoil that can be pressurized to maintain the required face pres-sure. Despite this, there are records of relatively large, and often quite variable, surface settlements over EPB driven tunnels in soft clay. To understand this variation it is necessary to identify the various factors that contribute to settlement. Tunnels in soft clay are ideal for study these effects in the field, as an unsupported void will close almost immediately, due to the low shear strength of the soil. In the short term, deformation in a soft clay will occur at constant volume, so short term surface settlements can be related to movements at tunnel level. In this paper, data will be used from EPB driven tunnels in Singapore marine clay. In all of the cases discussed the lining consisted of precast concreted segmental rings erected in the tail of the shield. The marine clay in Singapore has been studied, among others, by Tanaka et al.(2001). The clay typically has a plasticity index of 40 to 60, and the undrained shear strength (SU ) can be derived from: SU = 0.22 svo' where svo' is the current vertical effective stress. Figure 1 shows a summary of undrained strength/depth plots used for design on two sections of Singapore’s North East Line. The stability of a tunnel in clay can be assessed by comparing the stability number (N) of the tunnel with the stability number at total collapse (NTC). The stability number can be calculated from the equation: N = (?Z + q – Pt)/SU where: ? = the average unit weight of the ground above the springline of the tunnel Z = the depth to the springline of the tunnel from the ground surface q = the surcharge Pt = the support pressure within the tunnel The stability number at total collapse depends on the size, geometry and depth of the tunnel, and typically ranges between 5 and 9. Charts for assessing the number at total collapse are provided in Kimura and Mair (1981), based on the testing of model tunnels in a geotechnical centrifuge. For tunnels in the Singapore marine clay, the stability number of an unsupported tunnel would be over nine if the tunnel ois more than 8m deep. As a result, a support pressure

The energy and climate protection policy of European Union (EU), and its Member States adopted in 2007 bridges security of supply, environmental protection and competitiveness. The objectives of the EU energy and environmental strategy cover the foreseeable period till 2020. It assumes all sources of energy will be needed. The objectives for renewable and improved efficiency are ambitious; it must be established if they are also realistic. Coal can continue to make valuable contribution to the security of supply and low price of electricity, only with technologies allowing for drastic reduction of the CO2 emitted of its combustion. The aimed at -20% reduction of green-house gases (GHG) of EU-27 by 2020 is an objective limited in time and content. Europe produces less than 15% of global CO2 and this will be reduced to 10% in 2030. Emissions Trading (ET) is to remain the central instrument for CO2 management, especially in the power sector. ET scheme (ETS) or other mechanisms need designing to create an incentive for investment in higher efficiency and technologies and to Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS). The ETS as the climate protection instrument of the EU can become a heavy burden (high fuel and electricity prices, less security of supply) or it can create a climate for modernization of fossil fuel power plants. The suggestion in this paper of fuel-specific benchmark system for CO2 allocation after 2012 can combine the emission levels to be reached with a strong drive to invest, the necessary investment security, transparency and the principle of proportionality. A Benchmark System as recommended by coal industry could adapt to the different circumstances in the long term and comply with EU energy and environmental policy objectives.

The profitability of coal mining operations is highly dependent on the performance of the coal blending and processing facilities. Many companies have recognized this fact and have instituted optimization programs that require large amounts of coal characterization data, extensive operational information and complex costing models. Unfortunately, this brute force approach to optimization is often overwhelming in terms of time and cost and is generally too inaccurate to be of value in day-to-day field operations. A simpler and more practical approach involves the use of ?micro-price? optimization throughout the coal supply chain. This fundamental concept assigns unit values to each type product (particle or groups of particles) passing through the production units. True optimization occurs whenever all particles with positive worth are recovered and passed to market, while all particles with negative worth are rejected. This paper describes the fundamental workings of the micro-price concept as applied to coal blending and processing operations. Several examples are also included to demonstrate the economic gains that can be realized via the application of this concept.
