Barrick Goldstrike’s (Goldstrike) AA Heap Leach Pad is an HDPE lined facility used for gold recovery from low grade ores using conventional cyanide heap leach technology, operated from 1987 through 1999. Goldstrike prepared a unique reclamation plan for the AA Leach Pad Facility to provide for a cost-effective, environmentally sound facility closure and to fulfill the State of Nevada’s closure requirements. Traditional Nevada leach pad closure has involved rinsing to reduce cyanide concentration to an acceptable level, followed by reclamation. However, certain metals and compounds are not typically reduced by rinsing and some constituents may increase in concentration with rinsing. A closure scenario to effect limited infiltration through installation of a capillary cover for the leach pad was developed. The capillary cover was constructed by placing a fine-grained layer above the coarse-grained spent leach material to create a capillary break. In an arid climate such as Nevada, the fine-grained layer will rarely reach full saturation and the cover will be able to store water during precipitation and allow removal of water through evaporation and transpiration (ET) during the growing season. A 1.22 m (4 ft) cover thickness was selected as the optimum design cover thickness. The drainage network on the surface of the re-contoured AA Heap Leach Pad was specifically designed to enhance the revegetation, reclamation, and sediment yield control aspects of the AA Heap Leach Pad closure, while resulting in a natural looking surface, compatible with the surrounding topography. Adjacent natural topographic features were used to establish target design parameters for re-contouring and erosion control design.

Introduction Rockfalls occur when rocks or boulders detach from mountains or hills and tumble down. They can pose significant hazards to infrastructure such as highways, buildings, and mine open pits, and they sometimes result in personal injury or death. Prediction of rockfalls is a difficult task. Slopes that are at risk of rockfall have highly variable geometries. The location, mass, and shape of the rocks that might dislodge and fall are uncertain. Moreover, the materials that make up a slope can vary considerably from one section to another. Furthermore, the relevant material properties are usually not well known. Performing probabilistic simulations of rockfalls, combined with proper statistical analyses, has proven to be an effective and acceptable method for dealing with these difficulties [1, 2, 3]. The movements of a falling rock can be classified as freefall, bouncing, sliding, toppling, or rolling. The falling trajectory is controlled mainly by the geometry of the slope, the block shape, and the energy dissipated at each contact of the block with the slope. A rockfall model is evaluated based on its ability to efficiently predict the velocity, frequency, height of bounce, and run-out distance of falling rocks. With this information, the engineer can design remedial measures such as restraining nets and ditches. Most of the existing rockfall simulators are based on particle models that consider the falling rock as an infinitesimal particle with a mass, called the lumped mass or stereomechanical models [1, 2, 3, 4]. Other models involve hybrid methods relying on simplified assumptions. The most common hybrid methods are based on contact searching for the movement of a dimensionless object and incorporate some aspects of rigid body impact for bouncing [5, 6, 7]. There are also some rigid body models in the literature that employ simplified versions of rigid body models [8, 9]. This study applies a more sophisticated rigid body theory based on rigid body impact mechanics (RBIM), which was developed by Stronge [10, 11, 12]. The new theory captures all modes of rigid body movement. Due to the importance of the rock geometry, single impacts of ellipsoidal and prismatic rocks with rectangular cross sections are investigated. The effect of rock slenderness on rebound velocities and energies is also investigated for ellipsoidal rocks. The correspondence between the model parameters and the data from the rockfall literature data will be discussed.

Technological change is continually affecting the mining industry and the many papers being presented at this meeting reflect this fact. I fully agree that miners must remain fully cognizant of technology that can change mining costs and therefore your competitive marketplace. Despite the embrace of new technology and effective mine management techniques, the mining enterprise may not realize increased net income if the structure of the minerals marketplace is not understood. An important segment of the marketing structure for minerals is transportation. Transportation costs per ton can be much greater than the mining costs per ton and may accordingly overshadow hard earned gains in productivity. Change is greatly affecting the transportation industry but the change is driven more by governmental policy than technology. Although some technological advances are occurring in the bulk transportation business, the changes I want to address arise from policy. Policy changes have come from legislation in the 1970's culminating with the Staggers Act of 1980 and ensuing Interstate Commerce Commission decisions.

The Lewis Street CSO Tunnel is an important element in the efforts of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County (Metro) to improve the treatment of waste-water in the area. The tunnel is approximately 1,675m (5,500ft) long with a finished diameter of 2,600mm(102inches). 116m (380ft) of tunnel was constructed in soil with the balance being in lime-stone rock. Excavation was with a 3,700 mm (12ft) diameter Jarva hydraulic shield in soil and a Jarva Mark 12 TBM in rock. The permanent lining of the tunnel comprised concrete pipe with steel end-rings and a vinyl liner. This paper describes the construction of the project with particular emphasis on the excavation and lining of the tunnel.

As part of its risk management plan, the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority (RWA) is assessing the condition of its system of raw water conveyance tunnels and connecting pipelines. In 2006, the RWA inspected one of the system?s main tunnels, a 4-mi, 1950s-era tunnel that had not been inspected since its construction. The inspection team prepared extensively for the unknown conditions in the tunnel, and the inspection was completed safely and successfully. This paper describes the team?s pre-entry preparations, dewatering and ventilation efforts, surface-to-tunnel communication, access, physical inspection of the tunnel, and the lessons learned throughout the process. Additionally, this paper will preview planning for the subsequent inspections.

Heap and valley leach operations rely on solution collection piping placed within the heap to enhance both solution recovery and to assist overall solution management. The most common piping used in leaching operations is solid or perforated High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe and Corrugated Polyethylene pipe (CPE). These pipes are widely used because of their low cost, ease of installation, durability, and flexibility. The typical recommended maximum design depth of burial for HDPE and CPE pipes is on the order of 30 meters (100 feet). However, ore heap heights at many facilities exceed 30 meters and some are now approaching 180 meters (600 feet) in height. At very high ore heap heights, the stability and performance of HDPE and CPE pipes becomes a critical issue for leaching facility design and operation. Failure of solution collection piping can lead to poor solution recovery, high hydraulic heads on the liner system, and in some cases, unstable ore slopes due to high solution pressures near slopes. This paper presents a review of methods that have traditionally been used to evaluate pipe stability under high normal loads. A common shortcoming of these methods is the inability to account for beneficial effects of ore arching around pipes and the time-dependent creep (stress relief) behavior of polyethylene (PE) materials. A new analytical approach is developed and presented which includes the effects of ore arching around pipes and creep of PE materials. The results of the new approach show that PE pipes will deform under high heap loads, but can remain stable and functional. Pipe stability is shown to be dependent on the type of pipe backfill and initial backfill compaction. The new approach represents a useful tool for designing applications for PE pipe under high normal loads.

Research is currently being conducted at the Colorado School of Mines in the use of high-pressure water for scaling down loose rocks in underground mine openings. In addition to improved miner safety, the adhesion strength of shotcrete applied to rock surfaces treated with high-pressure water is also increased significantly resulting in improved overall support capabilities of the shotcrete layer. Test results show an increase in adhesion strength by a factor of four on a concrete test wall cleaned with water at 21 Mpa (3000 psi) as compared to a surface cleaned at 0.7 Mpa (100 psi).

Many techniques that are used to characterize and monitor microbial populations associated with sulfide mineral bioleaching require the cultivation of the organisms on solid or liquid media. Chemolithotrophic species, such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans, or thermophilic chemolithotrophs, such as Acidianus brierleyi and Sulfolobus solfataricus can grow quite slowly, requiring weeks to complete efforts to identify and quantify these microbes associated with bioleach samples. Real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) assays in which DNA targets are amplified in the presence of fluorescent oligonucleotide primers, allowing the monitoring and quantification of the amplification reactions as they progress, provide a means of rapidly detecting the presence of microbial species of interest, and their relative abundance in a sample. This presentation will describe the design and use of such assays to monitor acidophilic microbes in the environment and in bioleaching operations. These assays provide results within 2-3 hours, and can detect less than 100 individual microbial cells.

Introduction The Cove gold-silver deposit is located in Lander County, NV about 50 km (30 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit is in the north-central part of the Fish Creek Mountains within the McCoy mining district. Gold was first discovered in the McCoy district in 1914 by Joseph H. McCoy (Vanderburg, 1939). From 1928 to the early 1930s, minor production occurred from shallow underground workings. Total gold production was less than 311 kg (10,000 oz; Stager, 1977). The district was inactive until the mid-1960s when it was explored by Bear Creek Mining, Summa Corp., Houston Oil and Minerals Corp., Gold Fields, and Tenneco Minerals. Tenneco began a detailed reevaluation of the McCoy deposit in the fall of 1984. Tenneco's decision to place the deposit into production was based on a geological reserve of 8.7 t (280,000 oz) of gold (Kuyper, 1987). Subsequent exploration and development drilling of the McCoy skarn deposit has more than doubled the mineable skarn reserves to 19 t (615,000 oz) of gold. In September 1985, Tenneco began development work on the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The project is an open-pit, heap leach mine. The first gold was poured in April 1986. Echo Bay Mines acquired Tenneco's precious metals properties in October 1986. The mining operation and district exploration started by Tenneco is continuing under the Echo Bay's ownership. The Cove deposit was discovered in January 1987 and production began in February 1988. The deposit will begin as an open-pit, heap leach operation. It will be converted into an open-pit and underground mine with a 9-kt (10,000-stpd) mill. Geologic setting The Cove gold-silver deposit is situated on the east flank of the Fish Creek Range. Surface elevations range from 1460 to 1680 m (4800 to 5500 ft). The deposit is 1.6 km (1 mile) northeast of the McCoy gold-skarn deposit. The Cove deposit is hosted by the Augusta Sequence of Triassic age. Three formations of the sequence are mineralized at the Cove. In ascending order they are the Favret, Panther Canyon, and Augusta Mountain formations. The Favret formation is a gray, locally silty limestone that is commonly fossiliferous. The base of the formation is not exposed. Exposed and drilled intervals are more than 60 m (200 ft) thick. Conformably overlying the Favret formation is the Panther Canyon formation. This formation is 215 m (700 ft) thick and consists of a siliclastic and carbonate sequence of conglomerate, quartzite (sandstone), mudstone, limestone, and dolomite. Ventilation is an expensive prerequisite for underground mining. Current mining trends, including increasing depth and mechanization and more stringent health regulations would generally dictate that more air volume is required in order to provide good working conditions underground. However, any increase in the mine’s intake airflow can produce a disproportionate increase in power consumption and hence operating costs due to the cubic relationship between the sup-plied air power and the airflow (Power a Flow3). Furthermore, forecasts of significant increase in energy prices and new commitments with regard to reductions of greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions, determined the mining industry to look into developing new concepts, design tools and incorporate the latest mining technologies in order to lower capital and operating costs while meeting commitments regarding GHG emissions. The advances in computing power and modelling software now make it possible to design, model and schedule a mine from opening to closure. A developing trend is to design and plan the mine by means of orebody modelling software, followed by using discrete-event simulation techniques to predict production rates and evaluate various operating scenarios throughout the life of the mine. The authors are currently evaluating how such process simulators could be adapted in order to forecast the need for materials or a specific resource, and one of these would be the mine’s “life-cycle” airflow demand as a function of scheduled production rates and mine operating characteristics. Further to this, based upon the mine’s life-cycle airflow demand schedule, the ventilation system could then be designed using a mine ventilation simulator. This new design approach would integrate in parallel the development of the ventilation system with the current mining conditions, therefore, heading towards “develop-as-you-go” as opposed to developing the system for final requirements with high upfront costs. This new ventilation system design criteria would also incorporate the use of the “ventilation-on-demand” technology, which will further lower development and production costs and implicitly, the mines’ GHG emissions.

In June, 1981 the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) issued a report titled "Control Systems in Coal Preparation Plants" to determine the status of instrumentation and automation systems in the coal preparation industry. EPRI concluded that the control systems presently being employed in the U.S. coal preparation plants "are relatively primitive compared with those in other mineral processing industries; and analytical instrumentation is virtually non-existent". Until recently, clean coal has had a low selling price and satisfying the purchasers' specifications required only minimum cleaning. However, it is becoming more apparent that the increases in coalfired utility power plants forced outage rates are relative to the deterioration in the quality of fired coal. Utility companies are becoming aware of the economic value of reducing the variability of ash, moisture and sulfur in steam coal purchase orders. New contracts are currently being negotiated between electric utilities and coal producers that include provisions for increased penalties if the product does not meet specifications. With tighter specifications on the quality of steam coal, interest is increasing in more sophisticated control systems. One type of device that is currently assisting the preparation plant operator optimize and control the coal cleaning process is nuclear based instrumentation. Nuclear instrumentation includes methods for measuring weight, level, and density as well as for performing elemental analysis on coal. This paper discusses the various types and applications of nuclear instrumentation currently in use in the coal preparation industry.

For the 22nd year, the chance to exchange knowledge, experience and business cards drew hundreds of mining and phosphate professionals for a two-day regional Phosphate Conference in Lakeland, Florida Nearly 400 people participated in the October conference, which focused on the phosphate industry?s future success. There were 41 exhibitors, 13 program advertisers and 23 sponsors among those supporting the conference. It was chaired by David Gossett, 2006-2007 SME Florida Section Chairman. In the opening panel session that he chaired, John Garlanger (SME) of Ardaman and Associates posed the questions; ?How successful has the industry been? How do we measure it and what factors contributed to the industry?s success? How long will the ethanol boom last? Can the industry obtain the permits it needs to mine for the next 30 years? Can the industry attract and retain the quality of workers it needs??

The development of mechanical flotation cells has resulted in larger and better cells. This has led to flotation banks with only a few units, even in large-scale operations. This equipment development makes the old operational considerations ineffective. The flotation cell must be considered as a single reactor unit capable of handling specific tasks and getting excellent metallurgical performance. The result of the unit reactor concept development was the new large TankCell that comes in sizes up to 113 m3 (4,000 cu ft). The TankCell construction includes new modified rotor-stator designs, new tank geometries and a froth-handling capability independent from subprocesses taking place in the pulp (i.e., air addition). The conventional idea of a single flotation cell type for fine, intermediate and coarse materials does not give optimal results. Optimal flotation of coarse and fine particles needs different mechanism designs, impeller tip speeds and different froth control objectives.

A 1995 RETC paper of similar title presented a method for estimating rock tunnel water inflow based on semi-empirical correlations with borehole water pressure tests. Since that time the author has found the method to be very useful, and it has been used by others in the industry. This current paper is an update which is intended to: A. More clearly explain assumptions and limitations of the method. B. Describe some case history examples. C. Respond to questions which have been raised; and extend the method to other considerations including distribution of inflow along the tunnel, panning requirements, interpretation of tunnel probe hole water inflow, and estimation of potential effectiveness of pre-excavation grouting to reduce water inflow.

Introduction Coal has always been China's predominant energy resource. The country ranks among the three richest countries in coal reserves in the world, next to the US and the Soviet Union. According to China's Ministry of Coal Industry (MCI), coal accounted for about 72% of the total national energy consumption. Despite efforts to increase the output of oil and hydropower, coal is predicted to remain dominant on the energy scene by increasing its share to 77% by the turn of the century. To match the rapid growth in the agricultural and industrial sectors, MCI has targeted the coal industry to double coal output from 600 Mt/a (660 million stpy) in 1981 to 1.2 Gt/a (1.3 billion stpy) by the year 2000. How is this goal to be achieved? According to MCI, it will be accomplished by: • building new underground and surface mines with a total output of 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); • increasing the output of existing state-controlled mines from the present 344 Mt/a (368 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); and • developing and increasing the output of small, local mines run by province, county, and production brigade from the present 276 Mt/a (304 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy). Building new underground and surface mines New underground coal mines will be developed in areas where the coal industry has already made headway and infrastructures currently exist. This is to optimize hardpressed capital spending on investment. Ten existing coal production bases were selected in nine different provinces that met these requirements. The underground mines scheduled to be constructed in stages at he existing coal production bases will have a total output of 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy) by the end of the century. Regarding surface mines, four mines in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and one in Shanxi province have been earmarked for construction during the same period. By the year 2000, these surface mines are expected to produce 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy). Foreign equipment, machinery, and surface mine stripping technology were all involved in different degrees in the development of the five new surface mines. Some have signed joint venture agreements. Occidental Petroleum Corp. is in a joint venture with China in developing Ping-shou's 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) Antaibao No. 1 open-pit. The Shentou power station, situated nearby, is anticipated to consume 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 million stpy) of the coal it produces. Some is designated for export. Increasing output There are 554 state-controlled mines that have been in operation since before 1980. They produce 344 Mt/a (379 million stpy). To increase capacity, MCI has laid out some guidelines. • Coal prospecting near existing mines must be given top priority and intensified so that workable reserves can be increased. This would lengthen the mines' useful life. • Many mines and slopes that were constructed during the 1950s are very small and densely populated. In 1991, Placer Dome Venezuela established a 70% stake in Minera Las Cristinas, to mine the Las Cristinas gold deposits in Bolivar. This case study examines the multi-sectoral partnership arrangement that was developed to improve health services near the proposed Las Cristinas gold mine. The investment climate in Venezuela is uncertain and the socio-economic circumstances are potentially hostile. Despite that, the partnership between the mining company, local communities, government agencies and an international health nongovernmental organization (NGO) collectively leveraged nearly $2.5 million to build and operate a community health center.

Mining companies require accurate short-term mining forecasts to meet budget targets and customer needs. Challenging mining conditions along with employee turnover and lack of standard geologic modeling and mine planning processes can result in time-consuming and inconsistent mine plans. Documentation and automation of the processes involved in mine planning, as well as proper software utilization, are critical in overcoming these challenges. This paper discusses the steps involved in achieving an optimized mine planning system to accomplish productive and cost effective operations. In addition, a case study is included to describe the process of implementing a semi-automated system whereby the geologic model and mine scheduling database are updated monthly to incorporate changes in geology in a relatively complex open-pit coal mine. This case study proves that the ability to update geologic models based on the latest information gathered from production drilling and mining activities can greatly enhance the ability to accurately predict short-term mining production.

"The Netherlands has major resources of sand, gravel and clay, exploited mainly for construction works and the building materials industry. As in most western countries, mineral extraction meets with considerable societal resistance. To this end, Dutch minerals policy aims to prevent extraction by promoting economical use of materials, and the use of alternative (secondary or renewable) materials. Up till recently, it also included a system of production planning to sustain supplies of regionally scarce materials. Dutch policy development is reviewed and discussed in terms of pitfalls and possibilities for mineral planning in general. Promoting secondary substitution has been quite successful, and presents an example. In contrast, the production planning system has been controversial from the start and ineffective as a result, mainly because it attempted to solve supply problems without properly addressing the underlying resistance. When modeling predictive pit lake chemistry, groundwater chemistry is integrated with the affected portions of the wall rock and chemistry of the lake in a complex series of mixing. Fractions of the solutions impinge upon fresh, unaltered or fractured and oxidized zones of the wall containing sulfide materials and/or soluble metal/metalloid salts. Changing conditions over the short term (biannually) and long term (decades) can drive reactions allowing for dissolution or precipitation of acid rock drainage and metal leaching (ARD/ML) constituents. Local zonal variations can result in a portion of the pit releasing materials into solution; whereas other portions of the lake might favor the formation of colloids or precipitants. The proportions and character of groundwater can drive the chemistry of the pit lake provided sufficient buffering capacity is available to temper the generation of ARD in the system. For sulfide-rich systems, reduction of oxygen by rapid inundation and consumption by sulfides is key to reducing the ARD/ML. This paper presents several models of a sulfide-rich wall rock system using a range of groundwater chemistries to show these constraints.
