An engineering endeavor involves the creation of an expansive, environmentally conscious reinforced sloped MSE wall system. The objective is to enlarge a flat mining work area. Situated in southern Arizona, this mine is dedicated to extracting essential resources such as Manganese, zinc, silver, and lead, crucial for advancing clean and renewable energy initiatives. The project necessitates the implementation of a Mechanically Stabilized Earth retention system. This system aims to both expand the mine’s working area and facilitate access to underground tunnels. The expansion pad must be robust enough to endure the substantial loads exerted by heavy mining machinery. The wall’s reinforcement components are strategically designed to counteract the challenges posed by aggressive soil conditions with low resistivity. Furthermore, they must be resilient against potential damage during installation. The system’s ease of transportation is crucial due to challenging access conditions, and its design must allow for efficient drainage. A significant consideration is the integration of a face system that fosters vegetation growth and seamlessly merges with the existing flora of the area. In addition, plans include the construction of an access road downslope from the wall. The chosen solution involves a reinforced sloped system with a 70-degree incline. The wall’s surface is adorned with an erosion control mat, intended to promote the proliferation of vegetation. For added durability, the wire basket units are equipped with galvanized wire featuring a polymer coating. High tensile strip bonded geogrids, featuring a robust polyester core, provide essential reinforcement. The completed wall is an impressive feat, spanning 1500 feet in length and soaring to a height of 45 feet. It stands as a testament to innovative engineering in harmony with environmental and functional considerations.

INTRODUCTION Mining activity and basic geometry of open pit mines represent major obstacles in geotechnical mapping. Mining creates a constantly changing topographic base which may require corresponding updates of field sheets before mapping can proceed. The rapid pace of mining operations may also threaten removal of important geologic and engineering features before adequate base maps and surveyed control can be established. Maintaining such control during the mapping process is yet another complication. In addition, basic geometry yields nearly vertical outcrops. Access required for direct observation and measurement, essential to conventional plane table or Brunton techniques, may be impossible on such surfaces. Also, nearly vertical surfaces appear fore- shortened in plan view. This reduction in area provides little room for recording geotechnical detail. The difficulties encountered in open pit mapping can be substantially reduced by utilizing a modified form of plane table photogrammetry. This technique employs photographs taken from the ground as the base upon which details are recorded. The information is later transferred to plan maps using the plane table principal of location by intersection (Davis and Foote, 1953). Any change in topography can be accommodated by simply taking additional photographs. Proper spatial representation in plan view can be determined later when updated maps and surveyed control are available. In addition, horizontal photographs from the ground portray vertical surfaces as they are normally viewed thus providing maximum area for recording details. Any detail which can be identified on the photograph can be located correctly even though the actual feature is physically inaccessible. The technique presented in this paper was developed by the author for special applications at Kennecott's Bingham operation in 1970. The procedure was rapidly adopted for general use and has proven to be a practical tool for detailed investigation of potentially unstable areas (Zavodni and McCarter, 1976) and routine geological mapping (Richardson, 1975). Major advantages, other than those mentioned above, include: The speed and accuracy are greater than for conventional plane table or Brunton methods. The photo- graph represents a view from a station at some distance from the area being mapped. This vantage point allows evaluation of possible continuity of structures from one level to another which may not be evident at close range. The geophysical aspect of reconnaissance marks the beginning of extensive computer applications supporting development of a mine. Although there are some storage and retrieval applications in geology, and some statistical analysis in geochemistry, large-scale compilation, reduction, and interpretation of mineral resource data are initiated in reconnaissance geophysics. The reasons for this fact are quite simple. Geophysics is oriented toward quantitative evaluation of areas of interest, and methods of data collection are automated to the extent that large amounts of analog and digital information are recorded. The large volume of data must be interpreted in a reasonable time. Furthermore, some modeling problems involving complex numerical solutions could not be attempted without the computer. Therefore, the computer is essential to the success of an exploration project using geophysics. For example, aeromagnetics is a common technique for reconnaissance examination of areas associated with sulfide systems and porphyry deposits. An area covering 161 X 161 km (100 X 100 miles) may be flown with a 1.6-km (1-mile) line spacing yielding 10,000 line miles (16,093 km) of data. If only 10 measurements are recorded per mile, 100,000 data points, including location and magnetic field intensity, must be reduced and stored for quantitative interpretation. Computer applications often represent a significant investment in manpower and hardware. It is desirable, therefore, to initiate an engineering approach to the application of computers to geophysics. By this it is meant that computer programs and systems should be formulated, developed, and implemented in a disciplined manner such that their usage is dependent only on the application and not on the individual doing the programming. In other words, computer application, development, and usage should evolve beyond the personal gadget phase to an important applied technology. Geophysics has evolved over the past two decades in a course parallel to computer hardware development. During the sixties, the computer became large enough and fast enough that complex models required by geophysics could be solved. Automation also relieved the geophysicist from routine manual calculations. During the seventies, computing power in¬creased and applications expanded from two-dimensional problems to three-dimensional modeling. Moving into the eighties, as computer hardware costs will significantly decrease, the major expense of computing will be the manpower required to develop, implement, and use an application; therefore, improved programming techniques and applications software engineering methods will be used to optimize and preserve this investment. This chapter presents a general overview of computer methods in geophysical reconnaissance; it is divided into two parts: geophysical methodology and software engineering.

Predicting when and at what rate seepage will occur from waste-rock facilities is becoming an integral part of permitting and closure at mines situated in dry climates. Such predictions require development of a conceptual framework that accurately describes how water will percolate through a waste-rock facility. Also needed is a detailed hydrological characterization of the waste-rock facility, including measurement of the hydraulic properties of the waste rock and any potential cover materials. This paper presents a conceptual framework describing unsaturated water flow in a waste-rock facility and describes methods for characterizing the hydrology of a waste-rock facility in a dry climate. The methods are designed to collect site-specific data to support accurate and defensible predictions of long-term seepage rates.

Development of a permanent human base on the moon for exploration requires a self-sustaining system. Such a system entails the production and processing of limited amounts of raw material on the moon. Any mining and construction activities on the moon can only be performed by a robust excavation machine that can excavate a variety of material, from loose surface regolith to consolidated (frozen) regolith with embedded rocks in the mixture. Meanwhile, a limited amount of information on lunar regolith is available to develop and optimize a machine for lunar ground conditions. Therefore, any excavator designed for use on the lunar surface should have the ability to adapt to a wide range of operating conditions. A prototype cutterhead for the lunar excavator was built and tested at the Kennametal facility in Latrobe, PA. This paper discusses the results of initial material characterization, as well as full-scale tests of a prototype cutterhead in relevant material. A brief review of anticipated production rates under various assumed ground conditions is also presented.

The requirement for large diesel equipment to be certified for operation in potential gassy mine conditions in western oil shale mines motivated a design engineering project to develop a dry exhaust conditioner system to replace traditional wet scrubber technology. A dry exhaust conditioner for a 600 hp diesel engine was designed and fabricated for retrofitting into a 600 hp underground haul truck. The engine conditioner package was taken through a simulated certification process at the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Approval and Certification Center to refine test procedures and to uncover any flaws in the dry exhaust conditioner technology. The engine/exhaust system was then installed in an underground haul truck to demonstrate mine-worthiness of the system. No inherent features were discovered that would prevent the system from meeting test requirements. However, the tests did point out several deficiencies in the prototype design.

También se han incluido las alternativas por vía húmeda y seca. Antes de programar el ensayo debe decidirse cuantas muestras brutas son requeridas para calcular propiamente las posibilidades de molienda autógena del depósito. También ha de tomarse la decisión, de como y donde deben tomarse las muestras, por ejemplo: planta piloto situada en el sitio de localización de la planta o en otro lugar establecido; molienda en húmedo y/o en seco....etc. En el mismo programa del ensayo se obtendrán ciertos datos fundamentales. Los ensayos deberán incluir un trabajo suficiente. para determinar cuál de las moliendas, totalmente autógena o semi-autógena, debe utilizarse; y qué tipo produce la máxima eficacia en la potencia consumida. También, los otros datos pertinentes deben ser recolectados, como por ejemplo: potencias, tonelajes, alimentación, carga, tamaño del producto, carga circulante, etc. Si es necesaria una molienda secundaria para obtener el tamano final, la decisión de qué molienda debe emplearse (molino de pebbles o molino de bolas) puede requerirse un ensayo de trabajo adicional. Finalmente, la concentración del mineral puede jugar un papel importante en la selección del circuito y debería ser una parte del ensayo final una vez que se ha establecido la molienda. Methane drainage on a mine-wide scale is a relatively new technology to South African coal mines. Shallow seams and apparently low methane contents have been assumed to result in less methane problems than experienced in other countries. The introduction of deeper mines however, has now resulted in methane drainage taking on a higher priority. Methane contents in the region of 12 m3\t have resulted in one colliery introducing drainage as a ventilation support. Although a low seam permeability initially indicated reduced potential for drainage, early borehole flows of 90 m3\m\year have since increased to 450 m3\m\year. Rapid inflow of methane into goafs and sealed areas from seams surrounding the main production seam at another colliery have warranted extensive evaluation of the methane properties of these seams with the projected introduction of predrainage from surface. Methane pressures in excess of 1000 kPa and contents in the region of 10 m3\t again give methane volumes suitable for drainage. Coal seam drainage ahead of mining is becoming more significant and is likely to see an increase in the near future. INTRODUCTION Methane gas is an everpresent hazard associated with underground coal mining. Safe working levels of methane in the mine atmosphere are normally maintained by ventilation practises, ensuring sufficient dilution of the gas. However in some cases the ventilation must be assisted by methane drainage, either from the mined seam, or from adjacent seams and strata, or from goafed areas. South African collieries have practised only limited methane drainage until now. Relatively shallow mining depths, and apparently low in-seam methane contents have been assumed to result in fewer problems with methane than are the normal for other countries. This is now being shown to not necessarily be the situation. Work carried out by the Coal Mining division of COMRO (Cook and Erwee, 1991) indicates South African production coal seams have very similar methane retention properties to those of coals in other countries, with seam gas contents of up to 12 m3/t. This awareness, as well as greater mining depths, and higher degrees of mechanisation, has resulted in higher priority being given to methane emission problems throughout the industry. Increased levels of safety, as well as possible commercial applications, are the main reasons for the interest now being shown in methane drainage. Not only is there possible applications in the present production coalfields, but South Africa has vast areas of coal reserves which are presently non-mineable, now being seen as possible alternative energy sources. Limited methane drainage is practised within the industry, but only on collieries that have identified specific methane problems that can be alleviated by drainage. Historically this has been restricted to surface drainage of longwall goafs, reducing emissions onto the faces. More recently, horizontal in-seam holes have been drilled, until now for bord and pillar sections, but the results are being evaluated for later application to shortwall faces. Adjacent seams pose problems at some sites and vertical and cross measure boreholes are now being considered.

Due to the relatively remote location of the St. Anthony Mine, the high cost of transportation and milling, plus the low grade nature of the deposit, the United Nuclear Corporation began investigating methods of mechanical upgrading approximately eighteen moths ago. This investigation culminated in the installation of Model 17 and Model 18 ore sorting machines. The machines are marketed in the United States and Canada by Ore Sorters of Canada (Ltd.). The installation of this advanced technology will enable United Nuclear Corporation to fully realize the residual potential of St. Anthony.

Planning the primary development of a mineral deposit usually is done only once during the life of a mine. As a consequence, not optimizing the primary development of a mineral deposit can cause disadvantages over the whole life of a mine and can lead to higher costs. As a contribution to an improved primary development design procedure beyond the already existing work a study of the identification and quantification of the influence of parameters on primary development based on operational data from working mining operations has been completed. Based upon such a quantification of the influence of parameters a sequenced decision model was developed, that enables to develop an initial concept for the design of the accesses from the surface based upon a few critical parameters. Such a model will not replace detailed planning work within a feasibility study, but it is intended to reduce the amount of planning efforts at an early project stage through providing information what are most likely economic solutions, based on simple rules.

I. INTRODUCTION Modern hydrometallurgy has its roots in such notable successes as heap leaching for recovery of copper, cyanidation of gold ores, the Bayer process, the Oxland process for tungsten, electrorefining of copper, roast/ leach/electrowin process for zinc, and production of yellowcake from lowgrade uranium ores. Metallurgical testing techniques, sampling and analytical procedures, operating and maintenance practices, and improved methods and materials of construction which were pioneered in these processes have promoted the extension of hydrometallurgy into other applications. Periodically, new tools such as solvent extraction, resin ion exchange, and flocculants have opened new avenues to hydrometallurgists. Conversely, pursuit of more complex mineralization, the rising costs of energy and environmental quality preservation, and declining ore grades continue to create new challenges. For much of this century, it can be fairly said that practically any hydrometallurgical development moved the frontier of technology. The 1970's and 1980fs, however, have seen a significant maturing of hydrometallurgy's role in process metallurgy. Simplistically, this maturing seems to derive from a growing awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of hydrometallurgy and a determined effort to capitalize on the strengths. For example, many of us were among those revolutionaries of the 1960's and 1970's who taught that "chemical smelting" was the answer to the treatment of all sulfides. We now recognize, however, that only in very special cases can hydrometallurgy offer economic advantage over the generally less energy-intensive pyrometallurgical systems. The maturing of hydrometallurgy does not, however, signal stagnation. Important innovations are being studied and developed in most extractive areas, and a number are approaching or have achieved commercialization. From our company's perspective, that of an organization dealing with the development of the most economic solutions to metallurgical problems, innovation must be defined as the commercially successful reduction of an idea to practice. There appears to be no shortage of ideas, nor has there ever been a shortage. Many ideas now being implemented were conceived decades ago, but reduction to practice was foiled by the lack of such technology as responsive process control and economical materials of construction capable of withstanding highly corrosive or erosive environments. Commercialization of a new process is a particularly challenging undertaking. Even if technical risks are reduced to a minimum through careful and thoughtful process development, there are inevitable uncertainties in feed characteristics, variable costs, and product prices. Commercialization takes courage, both on the part of innovators who may be staking their careers or reputations and of investors who may face financial disaster in the event of project failure. This paper discusses innovative programs and recently commercialized processes which either have been discussed in the literature or disclosed to Hazen Research staff in private nonconfidential conversations with contacts in industry. Regarding this latter category of information, relative ease of communication has resulted in many of our observations being of North American origin.

"Double Shield TBMs can be used in fast track projects for accelerated completion where there is limited information available on ground conditions and there are possibilities of encountering weak ground and shear zones. As such, the shielded TBMs are the primary choice of the machines in long tunnels, but face the possibility of entrapment in squeezing ground, which entails long delays and major risks. This paper examines the possibility of using ground improvement methods to increase ground strength, and thus, increase the capability of the machines to cope with squeezing ground conditions. In this study, 3D finite difference simulation of a shielded TBM in squeezing ground was performed to estimate the operational parameters including required thrust to get a machine out of an entrapment. This analysis was also used to evaluate the possibility of preventing machine jamming by the implementation of pre-excavation ground improvement to increase the strength of the ground. INTRODUCTION In order to face adverse tunneling conditions especially using a shielded TBM in squeezing ground, new shield designs, with extra thrust and torque, step shield geometry with reduced shield diameter from front to the back, and conical shape shields have been used. In addition, many of the new machines have the capability to implement ground improvement at distances up to 50 m ahead of the face in order to reinforce the ground and further increase in their chances to cope with squeezing ground conditions. While these features have been added to the machine, there has not been a thorough evaluation of their impact on improving the chances to avoid machine jamming in weak rocks at high depth, which is conducive to rapid convergence of the ground."

The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for con¬tinued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. . The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950; the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic in an economic and environmentally safe manner is an important problem facing the mining industry in the United States. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves: • the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), •the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, •the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, •the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), •fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and •crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Batch experiments, using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite, were performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Variables studied included mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure, and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residues were subjected to arsenic leach tests, and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests. Introduction The ability to treat a precious metal ore containing appreciable amounts of antimony and arsenic is dependent upon the characteristics of the ore. For some ores, selective flotation can be used to separate the antimony and arsenic minerals, which are then treated separately. Unfortunately, many ores are not treatable in this way, and the concentrates obtained may contain appreciable contamination (which limits the ability to make acceptable grade antimony products). If we consider the added value of the precious metals in the concentrate, then it is worthwhile to evaluate the potential for new methods to treat these types of concentrates. In addition, the environmental difficulties associated with arsenic disposal must be taken into account in any proposed process. If there is appreciable arsenic present, then it must be either recovered as a marketable product or placed in an insoluble form. The problem addressed in this research program has become increasingly important as the precious metals mining industry is encountering more ores of this type. A large deposit of this type exists in Idaho where the antimony occurs primarily as stibnite, with minor amounts of kermesite and tetrahedrite (Cooper, 1951). The gold appears in association with arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other arsenic minerals. Flotation has been used to obtain an antimony concentrate. The concentrate, however, is contaminated with appreciable amounts of arsenic and also contains precious metals. If the ore or concentrate contains appreciable amounts of base metals, then the recovery process becomes much more difficult. There are a number of other known deposits of this type in Alaska, Canada, Montana and elsewhere. The objective of this research program was to develop a fundamental understanding of the oxidation and leaching chemistry of the arsenic and antimony minerals so that technology may be developed to treat these ores in an economic and environmentally safe manner. Wendt (1949) and Koster and Royer (1940) discussed the possibilities of oxidative roasting of stibnite concentrates containing arsenic. Wendt describes a process used at a smelter in Czechoslovakia (in the 1930s) where roasting was carried out in rotary furnaces at 723° K (500° C). Most of the arsenic was removed as fume, as well as 25% of the antimony. No sulfur dioxide containment was described. The oxide fume from the furnace went to a heated caustic water leach, where the arsenic was preferentially dissolved and then precipitated with calcium chloride as calcium arsenate following solid-liquid separation. The antimony oxide was sold, and the solid oxide discharge from the rotary furnace was sent to a blast furnace where the antimony metal, containing the precious metals, was recovered. INTRODUCTION Today, auxiliary fans, or boosters as they are sometimes called, are commonly used underground to provide ventilation for safe working conditions for personnel. Fans are installed in many ways and for many purposes; however, their use falls into three main categories depending upon the application. Auxiliary Face Ventilation For Coal Mines Usually the application of auxiliary fans underground in coal mines presents problems not normally encountered in other types of mining. Two of the major problems deal with liberation of methane at the coal face and the production of coal dust in the mining process. For these conditions it is necessary to use permissible (explosion-proof) type of equipment. As a result, these fans are discussed in a category by themselves. Auxiliary Fans For Tunnel and Drift Ventilation Tunnels and drifts present unique ventilation requirements. For instance, tunnels and drifts can be developed for considerable distances into virgin territory. Since they are generally dead-ended, the only way to obtain ventilation at the face is to use ventilation pipe to establish one leg of a ventilation circuit. The ventilation of tunnels and drifts therefore falls into another natural category. Other Uses of Auxiliary Fans For Mining Purposes Fans can be applied to mining applications in many ways other than those discussed under the other two categories. For example, many times auxiliary fans can do a much more practical job of proper air control and distribution that can be achieved with any other mechanical means; therefore, these other uses are discussed as a special category. AUXILIARY FACE VENTILATION FOR COAL MINES After 1936, federal and state coal mining laws prohibited the use of auxiliary underground fans in coal mines since such equipment had been widely misused. In certain cases, recirculation of face air had been allowed to occur thereby creating a serious potential explosive hazard by the possible buildup of excessive methane concentrations. By the late 1950s, mining machines with rapid face penetration were commonly being used in coal seams which liberated higher quantities of methane than in earlier years. As a consequence, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the use of auxiliary face fans was again allowed under strict experimental conditions because conventional methods of face ventilation control without fans were becoming inadequate. Today, auxiliary face fans are widely used under strict federal and state control. Such auxiliary ventilation does not reduce the need for the amount of primary air from the main mine fans; however, it does help to distribute primary air more efficiently at the face. The present trend is toward an exhaust system of ventilation utilizing 406- to 610-mm (16- to 24-in.) diam tubing extending from the face to an outby auxiliary fan. Since the tubing is normally applied with negative pressure, spiral wire reinforced tubing has been replaced largely with metal and, more commonly, fiberglass tub¬ing. Additional auxiliary blower units are often used at the mouth of the room being developed, or installed on the miner or loader near the face, depending upon the amount of gas liberation present. Often one (or more) of the fan units is equipped with an integrally mounted hopper and feeder which automatically adds a continuously metered amount of rock dust to the exhaust air. The combination unit tends to make the mixture of discharge particles noncombustible and reduces to some extent the need for additional rock dusting of return airways. In this part of the chapter, typical auxiliary ventilation systems are described including curves and photograph of typical/applicable equipment. Reference will be made to "blowers" and "ex¬hausters." Both are fans and are basically the same units. They take on their name through the manner in which they are used. A blower usually has an inlet bell on the inlet side to help to obtain good air flow into the blades. An exhauster often has a discharge cone added to reduce the discharge loss. Any basic fan unit can be used either as a blower or an exhauster. Description of Auxiliary Ventilation Systems Several auxiliary ventilation systems and modifications of basic systems have evolved over recent years. Some of these systems are described and illustrated. System No. 1, an exhaust system for faces with comparatively low gas liberation, is shown in Fig. 1. Here

"INTRODUCTION Lundin Mining’s Eagle Operation, located in Marquette County, upper Michigan consists of a mine and concentrator that process a Ni-Cu-(PGE) ore. The mine itself is an underground operation and the ore is trucked from the Eagle mine site 66 miles to the Humboldt mill where both nickel and copper concentrates are produced. Operations began in 2014 and continued with an average production of approximately 23,000 tonnes of Ni and 20,000 tonnes of Cu per year for the first three years of operation. The Humboldt Mill, currently operated by Lundin Mining, processes the nickel/copper ore from Eagle Mine and performs the concentration through several stages of flotation. Originally built in 1954, the Humboldt Mill began operations as an Iron Ore processing facility, and was converted to a gold processing plant during the 1980s. Various groups owned the site after closure of the gold operation. Eagle purchased the Mill in 2008 and invested more than $280 million to clean up historic mine waste and refurbish the plant (see flowsheet in APPENDIX). This paper will overview the ramp-up of the operation, and discuss some specific areas that went well and some that could have gone better during the design phase. HIGH LEVEL DESIGN CRITERIA Coarse ore arrives from the mine and is stored in a building with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes. Ore is crushed in three stages to a final product size of 100% Passing 12mm. Crushed ore is conveyed to the mass flow fine ore bins, which have a live capacity of 3000 tonnes. Crushed ore is fed to two parallel 900 HP ball mills, charged with 3” high chrome grinding media, and ground, in closed circuit with hydrocyclones, to a p80 of 110 microns in the flotation feed. Soda ash is added to the mills based on process water hardness. Cyclone overflow passes to the bulk conditioner where Sodium Isopropyl Xanthate (SIPX) and Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol (MIBC) are added. The slurry is pumped to the rougher bank for bulk flotation. Rougher concentrate is fed to a 500HP vertically stirred regrind mill and is ground to a p80 of 50 microns, using 5/8” high chrome balls. Rougher tailings report to the tailings thickener. The regrind cyclone overflow is sent to the single stage cleaner bank followed by two scavenger banks. The cleaner concentrate is pumped to the copper-nickel separation circuit. Cleaner tailings report to the tailings thickener. In the copper-nickel separation circuit, the pH is raised to 11.5 and a copper concentrate is recovered from the bulk cleaner concentrate in two stages, namely the copper roughers and the copper cleaner columns. The concentrate from the copper flotation columns is the final copper concentrate. The tailings from the columns return to the head of the copper-nickel separation. The nickel concentrate is the copper rougher tailings stream."

The spreading-ridge, or accreting plate margin, is the primary conduit of metals delivered to the earth's surface. Isotope ratios of lead show primitive mantle values at these sites, indicating that this is true. We can use lead isotopes in any mineral deposit to indicate the degree to which the metal is "primitive" in the sense of having been uncontaminated with U-enriched crust or "crustal" in the sense that it has been cycling at the earth's surface since earlier times. The reason for this is that the upper continental crust has an enrichment in the ratio of U/Pb over that in the mantle, so that old continental leads have a larger radiogenic component. The primitive metals delivered to the surface at the spreading-ridge are transported on the oceanic plate until they reach a subduction zone. Here they become cycled in the "orogen". However, in this process the primitive metals are mixed with metals from the continent so that the average lead isotope ratios are between those in the mantle and the average upper continental crust. Subsequently a part of the metals in the orogen may become fixed in a new block of continent. However there are processes which continue to uplift and erode ancient continental regions so that there is a continuous feeding back of metals to the orogen. We have therefore a cycling of metals from the existing continental crust into the orogen where they are mixed with new contributions from the spreading ridge and mantle.

In the ten years since its discovery the Lac Tio ilmenite-hematite deposit has become one of the world's largest sources of titanium ore. The deposit lies 25 miles north Havre St, Pierre, a fishing village on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River some 400 miles northeast of Quebec City. In 1941, J, A, Retty made a reconnaissance survey of the region for the Quebec Department of Mines. His results, published in 1942 and 1944, described a number of small ilmenite occurrences on the shores of four lakes within the area. Several of these were staked by Montreal and Toronto interests, Two of the claim groups were later optioned by Kennco Explorations, (Canada) Ltd, and a third by the New Jersey Zinc Company, During a detailed exploration program in 1946, Kennco geologists discovered eight ilmenite deposits, one of which was Lac Tio, the largest known body of ilmenite-hematite ore in the world. Quebec Iron and Titanium Corporation owned two-thirds by Kennecott and one-third by The New Jersey Zinc Company as organized in 1948 to equip and operate the new mining property. A railroad 27 miles in length was built (completed in 1950) to transport the ore to the St. Lawrence River at Havre St. Pierre, An electric furnace treatment plant, yielding a high purity iron and slag containing 70 m 75 percent Ti02, to process the ore was built at Sorel, Quebec, 550 miles up the river from Havre St. Pierre.

"INTRODUCTION Background Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) has been a critical issue during the last decade in underground mines. This problem is threatening the health of mine workers, as well as the mine’s productivity. It has been confirmed that the diesel engine exhaust is the main source for the diesel particulate matter (DPM), and that it has the highest impact in raising carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxide of nitrogen, and hydrocarbons in the underground environment. Miners who are exposed to this kind of emission are at high risk for developing lung cancer and other lung diseases. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has issued standard rules to regulate diesel emissions in underground mines. The final ruling confirmed in 2008 that the total carbon should not exceed 160 µg/m3. (MISHA, 2008) Monitoring DPM in underground mines has become important to ensure compliance with the MSHA regulations. There are many different types of DPM monitoring systems that are currently being used in underground mines. Two methods are typically used for DPM sampling: the personal sampling method or the direct exhaust sampling method, which takes a direct sample from the engine’s tailpipe. Many mines do not recommend using the direct exhaust sampling method since it involves complex measuring equipment and procedures, as well as it is not regulated in the United States or Canada. Thus, the personal sampling method is the preferred method in many mines when taking DPM samples. Even this method includes many variations, such as the Respirable Combustible Dust (RCD) method and the method devolved by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety NIOSH 5040. The NIOSH 5040 method is the preferred method overall because it gives more accurate measurements compared to the other methods. This method does not allow organic carbon sources other than those coming from diesel engine exhausts to interfere with the measurements, which otherwise would lead to overestimating the actual amount of the DPM in the mine environment. An impactor feature in the cassette, which holds the samples in the instrument, characterizes this method. Since the diesel particles are less than 0.9 micron, this impactor does not allow particles more than 0.9 microns to be collected in the cassette filter. The cassette is then analyzed in a lab and the concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and total carbon (TC) are determined. Lately, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a new instrument that can use the same concept of NIOSH 5040, but with instant measurements of elemental carbon. It utilizes laser radiation with the cassette so it can give a real time measurement. The real time measurements give instant information about the underground environment that will allow the mining engineer to take immediate action and enact plans instead of waiting for results from the laboratories where NIOSH 5040 method may take several weeks to get the measurements."

Old mine workings are found throughout the Western United Sates on lands administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and private lands. Some of these mine workings date back to the late 1800s. There may be as many as 100,000 sites on lands administered by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. The Bureau of Land Management has worked with the State of Montana and other agencies to identify and prioritize these sites on BLM administered lands. Following completion of the AML inventory work, the Bureau began an aggressive program to clean up priority sites. This presentation will highlight completed work as well as work in progress on several sites.
