Determination of the minimum sampling requirements of the run-of-mine (ROM) coal is very important for the purpose of meeting contract specifications. It is also important for the purpose of meeting emission regulations at a coal-burning power plant, such as the one located at Homer City, Pa. The classical statistical sampling theory can be applied to this problem, if ROM coal samples are known to be spatially (or serially) uncorrelated. On the other hand, the estimation variance concept from the Matherson's geostatistics must be used, if the samples are spatially correlated. Conditional simulation technique combined with simulation of the existing mining method is used to determine under which circumstances ROM coal samples do not preserve the spatial correlation. Only after establishing the degree of correlation that exists among ROM samples, an optimal sampling scheme can be devised using either the classical statistics Or the geostatistics. The minimum required sample volume can then be calculated using the well-known Gy's formula. This paper describes the results of the above investigation using the Helen coal mine data of the Homer City Owners. Empirical guidelines for determining the degree of correlation are also provided for coal mine operators.

A test to characterize the amount of gravity-recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore is described. Typical GRG results are given and possible uses are discussed. The overall database, which includes 68complete tests, is presented. The ore samples treated had an average GRG content of 63% of the total gold in the sample, with a standard deviation of 20% and a range of 3% to 97%. Both the F8(, of gold and the GRG content at a grind of 100% finer than 850 pm correlate well with the overall GRG content (at 80%finer than 75 pm). The primary use of the test is to determine whether gravity recovery should be used and how. Results can also be used to predict gravity recovery, as many of the ores tested are from plants employing gravity recovery. Gravity-circuit simulation can be used to refine recovery estimates or for optimization studies.

The increasing popularity of column flotation as an efficient and profitable mineral beneficiation technique has resulted in the need to perform a study of basic column operating parameters in order to understand mineral behavior in a column. Variation of column rougher flotation parameters on the Nevada Fish Creek fluorite and Utah Collins manganese ores enabled characterization of four beneficiation zones within a column flotation cell. Although specific mineral behavior in each zone was peculiar to the mineral system involved, particle retention time predominantly affected both manganese and fluorite recoveries in the collection zones of the column while enhancing mineral grades in the cleaning zones. Column parameters such as column length, feed injection location, and tailings recirculation velocity were inherently linked to particle retention time and retention time distribution, both of which affected mineral recovery. Froth depth had a discernible effect on fluorite concentrate grades; as froth depth increased, fluorite grades increased. Wash water additions affected both fluorite and manganese recoveries and fluorite grade. Axial mixing drastically reduced fluorite and manganese recoveries due to short circuiting of some of the feed slurry in the column.

In addition to coalbed thickness and basic coal quality data, coal drill cores can produce design data for coal beneficiation processes. To generate design data, a coal drill core should be reduced from its original cylindrical form to a particle size distribution and composition that represents (with the possible exception of top size) a raw coal process stream. Reducing a coal core with a crushing machine rarely accomplishes this representation. This investigation employs drop-shatter impact breakage followed by dry batch tumbling in a steel cylinder rotated about its transverse axis to characterize the core in terms of first-order and zeroth-order break- age rate constants, which are indices of the propensity of the coal to degrade during handling. To reduce composition variables and conserve difficult-to-obtain coal cores, the initial drop-shatter and dry-tumbling tests were done with synthetic cores. Then, cores from three coal beds, Illinois No. 6, Upper Freeport and Pocahontas No. 5, were tested. Comparison of a crushed drill core and a drill core prepared by drop-shatter and tumbling indicated that the size distribution and size fraction composition of the drop-shattered/tumbled core more closely resembled the plant feed.

The hierarchical relationship between three broad kinds of grinding models for a spatially homogeneous, linear, time-invariant batch grinding system are first established. Limiting and asymptotic arguments for arriving at approximate but simpler models are employed in all three cases. These parsimonious models -provide alternate and, in some respects, more incisive and convenient tools for the analyses of grinding processes and simulation of comminution circuits. In the discrete-size, discrete- time class of models, a reduced mill matrix is derived, which is seemingly adequate for those grinding circuits whose identification otherwise is difficult because of limitations on the quantity of data and its quality. In discrete-size, continuous-time types of models, parameter lumping has been employed for obtaining a G-H solution which is quite accurate and exceptionally useful for graphical display of data, model verification, and parameter estimation and simulation. In continuous-size, continuous-time models, a similarity transformation is used for solving the integrodifferential equation of grinding. This solution provides a unified framework for a number of apparently diverse empirical grinding phenomena such as self-preserving behavior of ground particle size distributions and energy laws.

Track-type tractors remain one of the most cost-efficient stripping tools available to coal miners. Whether they are "sweetening up" a dragline operation with prebenching or serving as the primary tool, dozers are important in driving down mining costs. This article reviews the application zone of track-type dozers. It also provides suggestions for site setup, equipping tractors and machine operation. In recent years, the track-type tractor has become more of a production tool in mining. With the advent of bigger machines, bulldozers have become a typical component in mining operations, removing overburden down to the top seam of coal. Large tractors can also be teamed up with draglines and other systems to maximize the effectiveness of the mining system. Bulldozers remain the tool of choice for topsoil removal, spoil reclamation or any application that demands low ground pressure, or short distance. The introduction of the 523-kW (700-hp) track-type tractor to the mining industry has made the bulldozer a low-cost-per-ton means of removing overburden. The large tractors offer enough productive capability to be considered prime stripping tools. And they can lower mining costs by complementing other mining systems (dragline, cast blasting and loader/truck). Four criteria determine whether a track-type tractor is the right machine for a particular application: ? Production requirements - dozer may fit job requirements better than a second dragline. [ ] ? Product support - availability of parts, service and technical expertise. ? Labor situation - how much of the cost per ton goes to the operator. ? Resale opportunity - recover a percentage of capital cost. Mining efficiency is economically controlling the cost of any system. Most operations rate the most economical means of moving material as cast blasting, dragline and the track-type tractor. All three of these systems share one common value: They are all sensitive to distance. Regardless of the application, all mining systems have an economic range. Exceeding this distance will affect cost and productivity.

The known high grade mineral re- sources in the United States are fast becoming exhausted; viable new deposits are more difficult to find and more expensive to develop; operating and capital costs have increased to meet more stringent regulatory standards. By contrast, international producers enjoy a cost advantage as a result of higher mining grades, improving technological competence, and more favorable government support. The domestic base minerals industry is finding it more and more difficult to compete in world markets. It has become essentially a marginal industry today. The current philosophy of taxation in the United States has evolved over the past century. The structure of the taxing system is based on the assumption that a firm must be able to pay its tax imposts out of profits. In principle, firms incapable of supporting the tax load should be replaced by others that can do so. This philosophy applies equally well to the mining industry, so long as it remains economically healthy. However, mineral resources are finite. The situation in the domestic base mineral industry has changed fundamentally in recent times. For the reasons given above, much of the industry now cannot continue to compete profitably in the open world market; and there are no known alternative domes- tic mineral resources more capable of doing so. Under these circumstances it is important to consider the effect of taxation not only on profitability, but also on survivability.

Three lithotypes of Phalen coal from Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia, Canada, were subjected to a modified Hardgrove grindability index (HGI) test. The testing scheme differed from conventional (ASTM D-409) Hardgrove testing by, in one case, repeating the test three times prior to removing the -200-mesh fine coal from the Hardgrove mill, and, in a second test, removing fines after each of three successive Hardgrove tests. Only the first stage of the latter testing scheme actually conforms to the standard HGI test. All processed samples were analyzed petrographically by a combined maceral/microlithotype analysis. The increase in the percentage of coal ground to -200 mesh increases through the 60- to 180-mesh fractions for each of the lithotypes for the following two apparent reasons. First, with progressive grinding, more of the oversize material is close to 200 mesh (75 µm), creating a "pool" of particles ready to be ground to -200 mesh, and, second, the removal of fines from the system at each step eases the grinding at the successive step. The fines retained system shows the influence of buffering of further grinding by the particles retained in the grinding mill. The Phalen lithotypes and the series of Central Appalachian coals, evaluated previously by Hower and Wild (1994), differ in that an increase in vitrite and a decrease in trimacerite is observed in successive -200-mesh fractions in two of the Phalen lithotypes. This is the opposite of the trend observed in the slightly lower-rank Central Appalachian coals.

HISTORIACAL INTRODUCTION Mineral processing has three principle branches, to quote Taggart, "Ore Dressing, which comprises the methods of separation of solids in inorganic crude by means which do not affect substantial chemical change; Extractive Metallurgy, which utilizes chemical reactions for separations of constituents from solids in inorganic crude; and, Fuel Technology, which employs both physical and chemical methods for separating and rearrangement of liquid gaseous and solid components in crude oil and natural gas, tar sands, shale oil, or coal." The scope of this handbook covers the first two classifications, that is, "ore dressing" and "extractive metallurgy," which have been combined in one term: "mineral processing." For a brief history of the development of mineral processing, one could well refer to the Introduction, Sec. I of the Handbook of Mineral Dressing by Taggart, Froth Flotation, Principles of Mineral Dressing by Gaudin, and the original Richard's Ore Dressing, volume No. 1, first published in 1903-1905. In these references and the references given in them a coverage of the history of "ore dressing" can be found and studied at the reader's leisure. For the history of extractive metallurgy as well as ore dressing, the bibliography in General References, taken from a History of Ex¬tractive Metallurgy by F. Habashi, will give a good background for those who are interested in more detail on the history of metallurgy in general. Mineral processing covers a very wide field as is illustrated by the topics discussed in Part II of this handbook and dates back to the early history of man which started with the production and use of native minerals such as gold, silver, copper, mercury, and meteoric iron which were washed or picked from deposits on the surface of the earth and worked because of their malleability. Later, melting was discovered and then it was possible to cast objects of these metals, excluding mercury. The discovery of a method for reducing the metal¬lic oxide probably was developed from melting fragments of oxides or roasted sulfides with charcoal, so that the native metal could be produced in simple blast furnaces such as are used today in rural parts of Spain, China, and elsewhere. Eventually, it was learned that iron could be readily worked when hot, which resulted in its replacing bronze for tools, weapons, and cutlery. INTRODUCTION Cost Management is the evaluation and control of project scope, budgets, and costs with the objective to minimize costs and maximize the benefits to be derived from the use of project resources in conformance with Criteria stipulated or approved by the Owner. In order of importance, Cost Management is one of the most prominent Project Management functions because of its impact on the financial success of the venture. Cost Control and Cost Accounting are essential parts of Cost Management. The principal objectives of Cost Control are to monitor project commitments and expenditures, and measure performance for the detection of variances from acceptable standards and from control budgets so that timely action can be initiated to minimize costs. Cost Control is evaluation of current costs and projection of future costs, rather than the reporting of actual costs. Cost Control is not Cost Accounting. The primary objectives of Cost Accounting are the determination, classification, analysis and reporting in useful detail of actual costs. Following are some considerations on Cost Management and Cost Control as practiced by Owners and Contractors of industrial projects, Mining and Metallurgical projects in particular. COST MANAGEMENT Functions Conforming with the requirements of Owner's Criteria, the principal Cost Management functions are to • evaluate estimates of project costs and establish budgets for a scope of work and schedule; conversely, evaluate the scope of work that can be executed most effectively within a budget and schedule. • promote investigations and comparative evaluations of alternate designs and plans to find the most cost effective way to execute a project and minimize its operating costs. • based on Cost Control and Cost Accounting input, evaluate and initiate appropriate actions to correct deviations from approved budgets. assess project economics, the effect of changes on project economics and, if necessary, revise Project Criteria to modify their impact on costs.

Kaiser Steel Corporation, the pioneer steelmaker on the Pacific Coast, was founded by the late Henry J. Kaiser. In 1944 the Company purchased from the Southern Pacific Railroad an iron ore property 200 miles east of Los Angeles known as Eagle Mountain. Today the domestic operation of Kaiser Steel Corporation consists of the iron mine at Eagle Mountain; two coal mines, one each in Utah and New Mexico; an integrated steelmaking complex at Fontana, California; and several steel fabrication and erection facilities along the west coast. Kaiser Steel also has interest in Hamersley Iron, Ltd., Australia, and Kaiser Resources, Ltd., British Columbia. Eagle Mountain Mine is located about 80 miles east of Palm Springs and adjacent to the southeast corner of Joshua Tree National Monument. The area is one of the most arid in the world averaging only two inches of rain annually. Geologically, the mine is at the western edge of the Basin and Range Province which covers about one-half million square miles of the western United States. The Province is typified by north to northwesterly trending fault block mountain ranges separated by sediment filled valleys, Production has totaled over 82 million tons of finished products since the first shipment in June, 1947. Over 500 million tons of material have been mined from the deposit to date. Eagle Mountain Mine is noted for the pioneering use of the largest and most up to date equipment to mine and process its ore. In 1961 Eagle Mountain received the first fleet of 100-ton haulage trucks in the mining industry. There were thirteen semi-trailer units in the fleet. The first 12 to 17-yard size shovel in the mining industry was placed in operation at Eagle Mountain during 1962. Rotary drilling was introduced at Eagle Mountain in 1954 to replace churn drilling. Eagle Mountain was the first major mine to use metallized slurry when three aluminum slurries were introduced for primary blasting in 1962.

Introduction Many solids processes that look feasible on paper or even in pilot studies become disasters in full scale. Changes in solids flow characteristics from pilot scale to full scale be- cause of larger solids contact pressures, thermal shocks, or unforeseen temperature excursions often cause full-scale solids flow problems not encountered in the laboratory or pilot studies. Fortunately, proper applications of solids flow principals and solids flow properties measurement at full scale conditions can anticipate the problems and thus provide an accurate basis for full-scale design or existing plant modifications. Solids flow properties The basic solids flow property definitions are given in Table 1 (Johanson, 1966, 1976, 1978, 1985). In this section, the author will discuss each property and its potential for creating full-scale pilot plants. Unconfined yield strength The unconfined yield strength of a bulk solid determines the tendency for cohesive hangups of the solids in the process and is effected by the time at rest, chemical reactions, temperature, liquid content, solids size consist, and phase changes of solids or fluids involved in the process. One of the common mistakes is to consider the solids condition only at the beginning and the end of the process. For example, consider the direct reduction of iron ore. The feed solids are free-flowing, hard lump ore or pellets. The end result is a hard, free-flowing reduced sponge iron lump or pellet. One might conclude that the process involves free-flowing lumps. This conclusion may seem reasonable based on laboratory studies oreven pilot plant studies where solids contact pressures are very low. Unfortunately, during the reduction reactions at high temperatures, the rock or pellets soften and, with solids contact pressures associated with the full-scale plant, may fuse together, thus providing a possible solids hangup in the moving bed reactor not evident in the low pressure pilot scale. Fig. 1 shows some typical unconfined yield strength measurements for pellets as a function of solids contact pressure at various times at rest. Note at low consolidation pressures, generally associated with laboratory or pilot plant studies, the pellets show no strength unless held at rest for an extended time. This will produce a very free-flowing condition in pilot plants that will not exist in the full size reactor.

"Increasing worldwide energy demands, coupled with desires for cleaner energy, have led to greater research of renewable energies. Strongly weather-dependent energy sources, e.g. solar and wind energy, are unable to provide a constant control energy to withstand the fluctuation of the extensive power systems during peak hours. The pump storage plant Nant de Drance in Switzerland will not only have the capacity of a nuclear power plant, producing 900 MW, but will also combine the environmental aspect and the demand for controlled energy. Nant de Drance is one of the pioneer projects for upcoming energy challenges and serves as a model for future pump storage plants. This paper focuses on the planning process and the project execution of interdisciplinary large-scale projects such as Nant de Drance, including project related data handling, communication systems and project handling skills. Furthermore, the paper discusses mining excavation in the context of large scale projects and their regional environmental challenges, e.g. high alpine rock mass on the site of Nant de Drance. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project Overview Nant de Drance is a 900 MW pump storage plant located in the Swiss Alps. To provide such a high energy storage, six turbines (reversible Francis type), each with a capacity of 150 MW, were installed. Due to the efficiency factor of 80% the pump storage plant is able to provide an energy production of 2500 GWh per annum. Construction of the pump storage plant, which has been selected as “Major Tunneling Project of the Year” in 2014 by NCE and ITA-AITES, will be completed over 10 years. Therefore, the project has been divided in six major phases outlined below: - Launch: 2008 - Access Gallery: 2010 – 2012 - Excavation KMA, KTR: 2011 – 2014 - Concreting KMA, KTR: 2014 – 2016 - Installation of HEM equipment: 2014 – 2018 - Tests & entry into service: 2017 – 2018 Figure 1 outlines the single process phases of the project. For the construction of the shafts, galleries and caverns, 1.7 million m³ of metamorphic rock with sedimentary origin (mica schist & paragneiss of the massif „Aiguilles Rouges“) were excavated. A tunnel network with a total length of 15 km was created. The machine cavern measures 194 m long, 32 m wide and 52 m tall."

An overview is provided of Franklin Industrial Minerals mica mine and plant operations located near Velarde, New Mexico. Operated by Franklin Industrial Minerals since July of 1990, several process and product modifications have been developed and instituted to improve the operation. In addition to a brief history of site operations, descriptions of the mining, beneficiation, delamination grinding, and product classification processes are reviewed. Supportive topics discussed include equipment modifications and improvements, product application diversification, and specific product characterization. Also reviewed are the key areas of safety, environmental responsibility, and programs pertaining to process quality control and product quality assurance.

The quantum of coal fines below 6 mm in run-of-mine (ROM) coal has been increasing due to progressive mechanization of mining methods which has created a substantial incentive, worldwide, to develop suitable fine coal beneficiation techniques. The majority of the efforts have been directed toward reduction in ash/sulfur contents in clean coal. The beneficiation techniques may be broadly grouped as those based on specific gravity and surface property. The processes, which use heavy medium cyclone, water-only cyclone, concentrating tables, and spirals, belong to the former group while the latter group encompasses froth flotation, column flotation, oleo- flotation, and oil agglomeration. In almost all the gravity based techniques, it has been noted that a classification step prior to beneficiation is essential for effective treatment. In general, the effect of design and process variables on the performance of these units and also the quantification of the processes have been the main areas of research and development. In froth flotation, efforts throughout the world have been mainly to understand the effect of variables and to optimize the process. Quantification of the process has been attempted through kinetic studies and mathematical modeling. The efforts have led to the development of new reagents, machine designs, and flowsheets for a specified objective. The attempts so far with the column flotation and oleoflotation processes have indicated a great potential. Extensive R&D efforts are in progress to understand as well as to commercialize the processes. The efforts in the oil agglomeration process have been toward substantiating the inherent merits of the process by developing cheaper bridging liquids and technology to recover and reuse the oil to make the process commercially viable. Modeling of the process has also been attempted to predict the yield and size distribution of the agglomerates. This paper reviews and summarizes the recent developments in the science and technology of fine coal beneficiation processes. The current trends in R%D efforts for these processes are also highlighted.

Natural acid drainage is generated from pyritic rock underlying 17 percent of the upper Alamosa River basin. About one-third of these acid producing rocks have nil carbonate buffering capacity; there the streams carry significant acid plus dissolved Al, Cu, Fe, and Zn. In part of the basin, aquatic life is limited by the natural acid drainage. In the four miles where the Alamosa flows through pyritic rock the river grows toxic to trout. Inhospitable conditions continue downstream for at least another four miles. The waters become refreshed, naturally, through metal dilution, metal oxide and hydroxide precipitation, and acid neutralization. Water quality fluctuates in seasonal cycles. Dissolved metals and acid, which are generated year-round by weathering, are stored over winter in the unsaturated zone in the retained water and in soluble metal- sulfate minerals that form by evaporation of acid-metal waters. Seasonal discharge variations cause metal concentrations and pH to shift in the trunk stream; the acid drainage source streams, however, shift only slightly by season. In early spring, metal concentrations and metal loads increase as metals and acid are flushed from the unsaturated zones by melting snow. Peak metal loads occur at this time, and precede peak flow by up to two months. Other metal load peaks occur during peak flow and monsoon flow, even though metal concentrations are diluted at that time by precipitation. In late spring and thereafter, discharge of neutral pH water wanes, so trunk stream pH falls and metal concentrations return to previous high levels. Metal concentrations appear to be low from November through January when dilution from precipitation is lowest, but rise in February to near peak yearly concentrations. In years with high monsoonal flows, metal-laden waters apparently flush from the unsaturated zone and metal concentrations remain low from about October through January. In years with low monsoonal flows, however, metal concentrations in October and November at least are higher.

Cable bolts are used as a means of rock support around underground excavations in many mines across Canada and around the world. A substantial body of research on cable bolting was conducted at a number of Canadian universities and mines from the mid-1980s through the 1990s. Since then, research into selected areas of cable bolting practice has continued in Canada. The research has focussed on cable bolt instrumentation and on the inclusion of cable bolts in empirical stope design techniques. A review of cable bolting practice is now warranted at many mines. It has been five years since the completion of the previous substantial body of Canadian academic research and the associated advancement in understanding of cable bolt design, implementation and verification practice. Attempts were made at that time to transfer the new design procedures and performance assessment technologies to mine-site personnel. In some cases, this was effective, and ground control personnel continue to improve on their cable bolting practice at each specific mine site. However, at other sites, experienced people have moved on, and the new, less experienced personnel do not have access to the training or technical resources required to improve their understanding of the subject. In other cases, the technology was not transferred effectively to practitioners, with the result that substantial improvements can be made to the cable bolting practice at those mines. Guidelines for auditing cable bolting practice are provided in this paper. The guidelines include a discussion of the objectives of the audit, suggestions for audit procedure and a summary of the possible outcomes of a cable bolt audit. The objectives of an audit might include assessing the reasons for unexpected cable bolt failures, evaluating the quality of the installation procedures, quantifying the efficiency of the cable bolt system and assessing training requirements and procedures. A cable bolt audit should include consideration of all aspects of the cable bolting cycle, including the design, implementation and verification phases of the operation. At the end of the audit, a ranking should be assigned to the components of the cycle. The ranking system can then be used to identify items that require immediate attention, others that could be improved and others that are adequate. Following completion of a cable bolt audit, increased confidence in the support system and its application is generally, found, along with the potential for cost savings in many cases.

Not since 1917 has a foreign company developed a standalone, grass roots gold mine in Russia. With Russia's political changes of the late 1980s, development of mineral prospects once again beckons foreign investors. Cyprus Amax's interest in Russia began before the mid-1991 breakup of the former Soviet Union. In 1990, Cyprus Amax began searching for such an opportunity. Early this year, production will begin at the Kubaka gold project located in the Russian Far East, near the Arctic Circle. The Kubaka project is a 1.75-kt/d (1,930-stpd) open-pit operation that will produce more than 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold. Identifying Russian mining opportunities In late 1990, the first Cyprus Amax people travelled to Russia. The trip was to determine the potential for western firms to develop profitable mines. This encouraging visit suggested that Cyprus Amax focus on the Russian Far East with its mineral riches and its easier access to the United States. The company's initial efforts thus focused on working with the Soviet Union's Northeast Geologic Expedition, the then government agency for exploration and geology in Russia's Far East. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, Cyprus Amax continued working with the same people, but they now represented new independent, nongovernmental entities. For three years, Cyprus Amax investigated numerous deposits. This resulted in the identification of two properties of significant interest, one of which was Kubaka. Location Kubaka is located in the Northern Evensk District of the Magadan Oblast in the Russian Far East. This is an area east of Siberia. The project is situated in a mountainous area of the Kolyma Range, about 300 km (985 miles) south of the Arctic Circle. It is 285 km (180 miles) north of the fishing village of Evensk and 380 km (235 miles) northeast of the silver-mining town Omsukchan. In underground operations the evaluation of blasting fume dilution times and the application of recirculation techniques require accurate determination of the concentration of toxic fumes produced by the explosive used. This paper describes a methodology for obtaining concentrations of detonation products from commercial explosives tested under typical rock confinement and looks into the development of techniques for reducing toxic gases produced by explosives. This paper also analyses the application of techniques for the removal of toxic gas which would enable reduced re-entry times, a reduction in the quantity of fresh air and the use of air recirculation techniques, thereby providing substantial economic benefits to the industry. INTRODUCTION Toxic fumes from blasting operations are among the most common and serious hazards encountered underground. The implication of high concentrations of toxic gases emitted from blasting on the mine ventilation system are very significant and, in many cases, catastrophic results have occurred. Because blasting is a routine practice underground, the mining engineer is always confronted with the problem of controlling the fumes within acceptable levels. Typical control procedures employed underground include preventing or reducing the amount of fumes liberated from blasting through the proper selection of explosives and proper blasting techniques; removing the fumes through local exhaust systems or auxiliary ventilation (dilution ventilation); blasting off-shift, or at restricted times; localizing or isolating the effects of blasting where workings are isolated or sectionalized in the ventilation system; and absorbing some of the components of the fumes using air-water sprays. Dilution is one of the most effective control measures against blasting fumes and is universally applied. However, for precise determination of the dilution times for the fumes to reach safe concentrations, accurate determination of the concentration of toxic fumes produced by the explosives used is required. Research work has been carried out in determining the types and volumes of gases produced from blasting. In the case of ideal detonations, the nature and quantity of the fumes produced can be predicted by thermo-hydrodynamic calculations. However, commercial explosives exhibit non-ideal behaviour which is enhanced by the relatively small diameters of application in underground mines. The confinement offered by the surrounding rock further complicates the situation. It is well recognized that confinement affects performance and consequently fume generation. A detailed data base of fumes generated by commercial explosives at various conditions is introduced and the effect of blasting parameters such as, confinement, shock desensitization and incomplete detonations on toxic fume production is described for a variety of commercial explosives in use today. Thermodynamic predictions on fume production by the explosive compositions tested are also presented and compared with experimental results and their significance in assessing the quantity of fumes produced is discussed. A mathematical model capable of determining dilution ventilation requirements and dilution times to reduce the fume concentrations in the blasting zone to acceptable levels has been developed and it is being incorporated into a network system so that the effects of blasting can be simulated in typical mine ventilation systems. Solutions to the problem of controlling blast fumes within acceptable levels are described. These solutions include the use of control procedures which prevent and reduce the amount of fumes liberated from blasting. The use of low fume explosives, proper blasting techniques, dilution ventilation and filtration can be combined to effectively control fume production and save on costs. The application of these techniques to enable recirculation of underground air with reduced quantities of fresh air requirements is evaluated in a case study.

"Tunnels are built with a design life expectancy of over 100 years. One key component of such a design is the waterproofing system, which must reliably fulfil its function during the whole service lifetime of the tunnel structure. This paper deals with the determination of test criteria for the durability assessment of geosynthetic products in tunnel sealing systems. Hereby the understanding of the individual aging processes is crucial along with the long-term experience with these materials to ensure the transfer of the laboratory results and performance to site practice (test calibration) and vice versa. To verify the results of the new test procedure the material properties of geosynthetic products samples removed from older tunnels are investigated. Based on the presented results of the still ongoing research programs some preliminary conclusion regarding the updating of regulations for tunnel sealing systems are given. INTRODUCTION Watertightness is directly related to the durability and serviceability of the concrete lining. Therefore, modern traffic tunnels and shafts (Figure 1) are generally protected against mountain/ground water and water penetrating through rock fissures by a sealing system, for example with a loose-laid polymeric sheet membrane. Hereby the waterproofing sealing systems must be reliably fulfilling their function during the whole service life of the tunnel structure, regularly of more than 100 years. In consequence, the quality and lifetime performance of the waterproofing materials—beside the correct professional and careful installation in a tunnel infrastructure, is of great importance. The challenge for the industry, owners, operators and designers is ultimately the development of qualification testing and requirements (acceptance criteria) for products to ensure the design lifetime performance. Hereby the qualification procedure is seen as a routine integrated in standards, norms or guidelines, wherein test procedures should cover typical environments for the specific application fields. Polymeric synthetic raw materials are increasingly used in products with long service lifetimes (e.g. in injections, gaskets, waterbars, spray-applied and sheet waterproofing membranes). During service they are subjected to chemical (e.g. oxidation processes) and physical (e.g. changes in morphology) influences from the environment, which affect their mechanical properties—and they age. Hereby organic materials are more affected than inorganic materials. Also, polymers show strongly temperature-dependent properties compared with other construction materials. However, their long-term aging behavior is not given per se and has to be explored extensively by suitable tests, which simulate—under accelerated processes—real exposures and loads. Hereby the understanding of the individual aging processes is crucial along with the long-term experience with these materials to ensure the transfer of the laboratory results and performance to site practice (test calibration) and vice versa."
