Recent experiences within certain sectors of the international mining industry suggest an underestimation of the environmental risk associated with the design of mine waste management facilities. These experiences show that the technical and managerial challenge of responsible mine waste management is not always fully appreciated. Unfortunately, the image of the mining industry's environmental performance is negatively impacted by a relatively few number of failures. This negative view overrides the many positive contributions made by the majority of mining companies. The fact that these failures continue to occur to this day in both developed and developing countries is indeed remarkable, and indicates a degree of risk-taking approaching unacceptable levels. The design requirements for tailing storage facilities are, in many cases, more demanding than those of conventional water dams, because seepage of fluids which contain dissolved metals may pose a greater threat than the mere loss of water.

In 1988, at the request of members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) Inc., the president of SME formed Working Party No. 79, Ore Reserve Definition. Its mission was to develop guidelines for the public reporting of exploration information, resources and reserves. These guidelines were published in the April 1991 issue of Mining Engineering,(pp. 379-384), and as a document entitled "A Guide for Reporting Exploration Information, continued on an ad-hoc basis until 1996. A number of factors have resulted in the widespread use of computer simulation as a day to day tool in the mineral processing industry, as is the case in most engineering disciplines. A number of simulation packages, both steady-state and dynamic are now available commercially. The developers of such software face an enormous challenge in maintaining and improving the packages due to the complexity inherent in such systems. This problem known as the software crisis faces all developers of complex software. Object-oriented (OOP) and design is a methodology which has been developed to try and minimise this problem. The use of the OOP paradigm in the devlopment of simulation software for mineral processing systems is explored in this paper and it is found that OOP techniques have major benefits for the design and development of such software.

Research has shown that excessive soil compaction is detrimental to the establishment of trees in reclaimed soils. Dry bulk density and penetration resistance are two soil parameters that can be used to indicate the level of compaction in reclaimed soils. It is believed that reclamation practices that minimize soil compaction will produce better results when forestland is the intended postmining use. The University of Kentucky has developed reforestation test cells on reclaimed soils at a surface mine in eastern Kentucky to test this hypothesis. Each test cell has been planted with various species of trees. Since 1997, data have been collected at these test cells for soil average dry bulk density, average penetration resistance, average depth to refusal and average survival rate of trees. These data have been correlated to determine the relationship between soil compaction and tree-survival rate. It is believed that these two soil-compaction parameters may ultimately be used to predict tree-survival rates on reclaimed surface mined lands.

Refractory gold ores have been processed by bio-hydrometallurgical process at B.R.G.M. (Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières), Research Centre ,Orleans,France. The liberation of gold has been studied and the following steps for gold recovery improved. The overall process flowsheet has been established comprising different ways of treatment before the final discharge of the effluent. Iron and arsenic are successfully precipitated under well controlled Eh-pH conditions. Long term stability tests have been conducted and the research programme is to be continued with the crystallo graphic studies of the precipitates. Economical studies have been performed on the base of data obtained on parameters studies.

Ilmenite-rich lunar deposits can be converted to liquid oxygen to support lunar base operations and space transportation propulsion needs by a Carbotek-developed process. Iron oxide in ilmenite is reduced at elevated temperatures by hydrogen in a fluidized-bed reactor to water vapor which is electrolyzed to product oxygen and recycle hydrogen. Reaction rate, thermodynamic equilibrium, and lunar-gravity fluidization behavior are key factors which have been considered. Fluid-solids behavior has been modeled from data taken at lunar gravity conditions aboard NASA KC-135 flights. Large-scale pilot plant operations are planned to complete the development.

The development of small precious metal mines in the western states has been directed at heap leach operations. Crushing plants are an essential adjunct to heap leach operations. They must meet environmental air quality regulations which generally follow a similar pattern from state to state. Prior to mine construction a permit must be obtained and an operating permit granted during or shortly after the start-up period. The typical construction permit application consists primarily of drawings, specifications and an explanation sufficient to indicate that the mass of particulate matter entering the atmosphere is below minimum standards. The operating permit may be granted following demonstrations that air emission control equipment or methods comply with information submitted in the construction permit application.

LITHOPROBE is a collaborative, multidisciplinary research project that is providing new insights into the tectonic evolution of the North American continent through its work within 10 study areas across Canada. For the mining industry, such results provide a well-constrained regional framework and better understanding of the tectonic processes that lead to the development of ore deposits. In mining camps, seismic-reflection methods have proven effective in imaging shallow to moderately dipping lithologic contacts as well as structural features and, in some cases, have been used for the direct detection of orebodies. Here, short case histories are provided for the Abitibi greenstone belt (VMS deposits) in Quebec and the Thompson nickel belt in Manitoba.

Results of the common research work of ALUTERV-FKI and RI in field of ore dressing are presented here. Although monohydrate types of bauxites consist of finely dispersed minerals, however, in some cases certain contaminants (carbonates mainly), can be reduced by physical methods before Bayer process. Electronmicroscopy combined with computerized data processing is proven to determine the possibility of beneficiation and to control the different stages of ore dressing. Test results gained by Hungarian and Yougoslavian bauxite samples, contaminated by calcite, dolomite, siderite and pyrite, are discussed. Basic operations were: grinding (mostly dry) and classification, magnetic separation (mostly wet) and selective agglomeration. Only simple processes, having high efficiency and mostly dry ore dressing technique may meet the requirement of economical criteria. 1. A literature review on quantitative analysis of mine safely studies revealed that numerous investigators explored a wide- range of techniques, including the investigation of bivariate and multivariate statistical models. Although these researchers addressed various issues of accident causation and prevention, they, in general, did not investigate through the use of quantitative models the multivariate relationships of several factors affecting mine safety in a causal framework. In this paper, systems dynamics and structural equation modeling are presented to simultaneously represent and study the effect of policy variables related to accident prevention along with the factors causing accidents and injuries. The application of these models to a group of mines revealed that current training practices at these mines do not appear to alleviate accident occurrences. It is inferred that the use of these quantitative techniques can provide a new direction of research in mine-safety studies.

In Chinese coal mines, extraction of deep, highly gassy soft coal seams sandwiched between soft floor and soft roof in complicated geology is commonly encountered. How to safely and efficiently excavate such seams is a very significant and important problem. It has been a focused research area in recent years. By combining the characteristics of fully mechanized longwall mining methods such as large cutting height and mining along the dip, an integrated method and technologies for the Zhangji Coal Mine were developed. This technology includes the design of a complicated geological exploration system, optimization of mining method and working face parameters, control of rock pressure and high levels of gas, reliability model of the production system, and selection and compatibility of equipment. Engineering practice shows that the integrated technology was successful in mining these complicated seams. This study not only enriches the mining method, but also improves the coal mining practice, especially ensuring both safety and productivity under complicated geological conditions.

In the event of fire underground, it is essential that all miners be warned as quickly as possible. With mine air rapidly depleted of oxygen and contaminated with smoke and toxic fire gases, any delay in the warning signal could have disastrous consequences. Unfortunately, present mine fire warning systems, such as stench, audible or visual alarms, telephones, and messengers, are often slow, unreliable, and limited in coverage. Recent research by the US Bureau of Mines has established the feasibility of ultralow frequency electromagnetic signaling for underground mine fire warning. Infield testing completed thus far at five mines, signals of from 630 Hz to 2000 Hz were transmitted through rock up to distances of 1645 m (5400 ft) to a pencil-sized ferrite-core receiving antenna and intrinsically safe receiver circuit. Theoretical analysis indicates a capability to transmit effectively for distances in excess of the maximum depths of most American mines, which is about 900 to 1000 m (2950 to 3280 ft) . The prototype system uses off-the-shelf components and state-of-the-art technology to ensure high reliability and low cost. This technology would enable simultaneous and instantaneous warning of all underground personnel, thereby in- creasing the likelihood of successfully evacuating a mine during a disaster. This report discusses the theoretical basis for through-the-rock ultralow frequency electromagnetic transmission, design of the prototype transmitter and receiver, and the results of in-mine tests of the prototype system.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has committed to solve a major drainage problem in the suburban Chicago community of Griffith, Indiana. The Cady Marsh Ditch is currently undersized and on occasion spills its banks causing flooding and economic setbacks to the community. Preliminary studies have identified both tunnel and surface solutions as being attractive and viable. The USACE has decided that this project is an opportunity to use the design-build contracting approach to maximize ingenuity in project approach and to allow the market to dictate whether a surface or subsurface solution is most attractive. The tunnel would be over one-mile in length through sands, gravels and clay. Water control will be an issue during tunneling. The paper will explore the contracting approach to the project and the adaptation of Underground Technology Research Council (UTRC) guidelines for underground contracting to a design build project. The roles of Owner, Owner’s consultant, and design-build contractor will be defined as interpreted by the USACE and key contract provisions will be described and contrasted with a traditional design-bid-build approach to tunnel construction.

The Star-Morning mine is a. 1000-ton-per-day lead-zinc producer located in the easterly part of the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of North Idaho. The property includes both the Star and Morning mines which are located on the westerly and easterly portions of the same complex of veins. The mine is 70% owned by the Bunker Hill Company (Gulf Resources, Inc.) of Kellogg, Idaho, 30% owned by Hecla Mining Company, and operated by Hecla Mining Company with head-quarters in Wallace, Idaho. One of the characteristics of mines in the Coeur d'Alene District is that many of the ore bodies extend to very great depths. The Star is no exception, but rather a leading example. The complex of near vertical veins and ore shoots extend some 7000 feet below the surface at present, with a maximum strike length of about 4000 feet. Ore has been mined on 20 separate veins and ore structures. More than 50 miles of headings have been driven and nearly 23 million tons of ore mined since the Morning mine started in.189S. The problems of mining at such depths are formidable temperature on the bottom level is 1100 F and high humidity problem. Pressure from the sheer weight of rock is as high foot. This paper will deal with providing a new access to the deeper levels of the mine and the installation of a hoist and related items to service these levels. By the time development had reached the 7100 level (Figure 1), it became apparent that a different 'hoisting system was going to be necessary if we were going to continue to mine at a profit. The main shaft extended to the 4000 level at which point a ?:3100"'foot winze shaft provided access to the 7100 level. The two hoists were limited to handling 3-ton payloads at 1200 to 1500 feet per minute. Some ores are still produced from above the 4000 level but as these ore reserves become depleted the hoisting of the desired tonnage (1000+/day-) from the lower levels of the mine would exceed the capacity of the existing hoisting system. A decision was made to sink a new vertical shaft at a point well in the south wall of the ore bodies where strong rocks and a minimum of faulting was expected and to purchase and install a new hoist capable of hoisting over 7000 feet. This new' shaft, designated as the No. 4 Shaft, was planned to reach 2000 feet below the 7100 level which was the deepest level at that time. The hoist would be in-stalled on the ,main 2000 Adit level which is used as an access and haulage level to the concentrator and surface plant in Burke.

The evaporative pan complex consists of two adjacent seasonal pans. These pans carry an exceptionally high salt (TDS) load due to over 50 years of effluent discharge via the pipeline from mines. The nutrient, heavy metal, radionuclide load in the water and sediments of the pans are very high affecting groundwater around the pans. The groundwater in the region contains TDS > 40 000 mgl-1 and sulphates > 7000 mgl-1, whereas groundwater in areas assumed to be unpolluted by mining activities have TDS < 500 mgl-1 and sulphates < 200 mgl-1. The extent of continuity between the pans and the groundwater is unknown, although there appears to be seepage of contaminated groundwater into the river system.

During the past decade, since the appearance of Popoff&apos;s (1966) review of grade tonnage calculations, it has become evident that defining a new method which could be followed step by step by a technician and which would improve reserve estimation was not a simple thing to do. Some concepts have emerged though, and most definitions of ore reserve now require a statement of reliability (USGS, 1975; and Zwarten-dyke, 1976). Exactly how the reliability should be computed is not a straightforward process. It also became apparent that not only was reliability a requirement but that additional questions such as how to predict mining re- serves from geological reserves were to be asked. In fact what became obvious is that specific models have to be designed for each type of mine and for each type of question which is asked. Most methods can be encased within a unique general geostatistical, model, but it takes considerable custom tailoring, and there are still questions that are left unanswered. In this chapter, before giving techniques, we intend to first review what should be required from a grade tonnage calculation done at the exploration stage. If the final objective is still to specify a tonnage and grade, with eventually a reliability, many qualifications have to be made before quoting, and of course, calculating these two numbers. Then the currently avail- able methods will be reviewed and future trends will be shown; finally a few case studies will be given and recommendations about the choice of a model will be made.

The Dolph Mine fire site is located in Lackawanna County, PA, approximately three miles northeast of the city of Scranton. The fire was burning in both coal refuse (culm) and underground anthracite mine workings. It was reportedly begun by rubbish burning on top of a culm bank. A site investigation was completed in 2006 to define the extent of the fire and to recommend fire control measures. A cut off trench was selected as the principal control method. Plans and specifications were prepared in late 2006. The project was bid and a contractor selected in early 2007. The trench construction was completed in 2007. This paper describes the investigation and selection of the fire control method and discusses the trench construction.

INTRODUCTION Some of the most famous and graphic environmental incidents have arisen from mineral extraction, including oil spills, the Reserve Mining asbestos tailings case, Kaiparowitts surface mining and coal combustion, and other environmental causes celebre. The remote location of much of the mining industry to some extent reduces the human health hazards from pollution, but often times the pristine locale in which mining is conducted provides a sharp contrast to the impacting industry. This prompts questions as to what the research literature says about the true costs and benefits of environmental compliance. We survey the state of this knowledge. Where possible, we discuss studies focused on mining and related industries, such as primary metals production. In many cases, how- ever, the studies pertain to the economy as a whole. For present purposes, the mining industry is defined as companies engaged in the production and refinement of minerals, including metals, fuels, and nonmetallics (e.g., phosphate, sand and gravel). There are several stages in mining, with environmental effects occuring at every stage. The exploration stage comprises the period from initial prospecting to the point where the deposit has been located and delineated in sufficient detail to permit development decisions to be made. Geophysical and geochemical surveys, diamond drilling programs, and exploratory stripping and excavation are activities that may be employed during this stage. Some forms of prospecting are relatively benign, al- though even airborne surveys and motor vehicles generate noise pollution. Roads and the passage of vehicles and equipment affect land surfaces and vegetation, and attract heavier backcountry use. Clearings, stream crossings, and borrow pits can lead to increased erosion and sedimentation of streams. Geological survey grids disrupt vegetation and appearance. Moreover, prospecting can involve the excavation and stripping of overburden, resulting in soil and vegetation disruption as well as in- creased sedimentation of streams and lakes. The effects of exploration are often temporary, and frequently less severe than for other activities. Nevertheless, exploration-related impacts vary with the intensity and type of exploration effort, and can be significant. During the development stage of mining, shafts are sunk, pits excavated, buildings erected, and transportation facilities established. Dust, noise, and other socioeconomic and environmental impacts are generated by the relatively large and sudden influx of people, equipment, and activity. Surface disturbance and solid waste are generated by development, and liquid wastes form when mines are dewatered. The extraction phase is associated with a variety of environmental impacts. Humid tropical environments pose many problems for mineral exploration. The problems result from thick lateritic soils, dense vegetation, seasonally heavy rains, deep chemical weathering, few outcrops and thick saprolites. Although geochemical exploration should be potentially a useful technique in these environments, it appears from the scarcity of reports in the literature that insufficient attention has been paid to developing procedures that are specific to the needs of humid tropical areas. For this reason, the authors believe that this account of a geochemical study in a tropical coastal area on the edge of the Brazilian shield is of general interest and importance for potential geochemical exploration surveys in similar areas within the tropics. The objective of the geochemical study was to develop a practical technique of reconnaissance geochemical prospecting for copper deposits in Brazilian tropical coastal lowland areas. In order to achieve this objective, information concerning the secondary dispersion of copper in these areas was required. Consequently, an orientation survey was designed to provide this information. The present account contains details of the geochemical study and the information about the secondary dispersion of copper that was acquired during the course of the orientation survey. Location and Climate The field area is on the Atlantic coastal lowland of Brazil at latitude 13°S. It lies approximately 10 kilometers south of Maragojipe, a city of 15,000 inhabitants; this city is on the western side of the Bay de Todos os Santos about 45 airline kilo¬meters northwest of Salvador. (See Fig. 1) A good gravel road from Sao Felipe to Sao Roque do Paraguay crosses the southern part of the field area. The climate of the area is hot and moist, and is without prolonged dry periods.
