Flotation is the primary method for copper minerals separation from porphyry ores. The need to process difficult-to--float porphyry copper ores presents challenges to engineers and scientists in several areas. This paper is concerned with summarizing generalized problems faced in processing porphyry ores and treatment methods to overcome them. Though some of the problems are interrelated, they are classified into three broad categories. The case studies of some of the successful applications of innovative methods to solve problems related to ore mineralogy, metallurgical aspects of ore treatment, and process variables show that quite often the problems are solvable by a judicious choice of flotation variables.

Northwestern Resources Co. (NWR) was established in 1972 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Western Energy Company of Butte, Montana, to acquire, explore, develop, and produce energy resources outside the state of Montana. Western Energy is a coal mining company with successful operations in Montana and Wyoming. In 1974, NWR acquired its first lignite lease in Texas. NWR eventually acquired a large leasehold in central Texas, which was identified as having a high potential for future production. In 1979. NWR contracted to supply lignite to Utility Fuels, Inc. (UFI), a fuel affiliate of Houston Lighting and Power Company (HL&P). This project, together with leases held by UFI, became the Jewett Mine. Lignite from the Jewett Mine is used as fuel at the adjacent HL&P Limestone Electric Generating Station, at an annual rate of approximately 7.3 Gkg (eight (8) million tons) per year.

Ground support systems must provide safe and effective designs for underground excavations under high stress conditions. These systems must be capable to resist dynamic impacts and yielding during the loading process. In this context dynamic testing of the reinforcement and retaining elements that compose the ground support system are required to study and improve the behaviour of these elements under dynamic load events. During the last years, Geobrugg has been working on the improvement of retaining products by testing them in a large-scale impact test facility located at Walenstadt, Switzerland. The test facility is composed of a double level platform with a square-shaped pyramidal trunk geometry, in the upper level housing a loading mass that drop from a height up to 5m. The loading mass is guided by one central steel pipe, and the impact occurs in the sample to be tested located at the lower level in a slab with an area of 3.6m × 3.6m where the ground support system is installed. During the last years, this innovative facility has been used to test several configurations of ground support systems. The results of these tests have enabled to improve the understating of the behaviour of ground support systems under dynamic loads. In this manuscript, the arrangement, measurement, results, and the preliminary analysis of a single impact dynamic test performed during 2021 of a ground support system with a high-tensile steel wire mesh MINAX 80-4.6 is presented.

The vast coal resources of North Slope, Alaska, can be expected to attract substantial interest because the nearly flat-lying coal beds of the coastal plain are specially amenable to surface mining. Mining on a scale large enough to justify coal development in this area could have severe environmental effects. The mitigation would be uncertain because large-scale coal mining and reclamation operations have not been carried out in the arctic. The deficiency of the scientific data base is another factor that requires consideration if coal mining has to develop in accordance with the objectives of PL 95-87. The objective of this paper is to establish the inter-relationship between the problems due to permafrost and factors in reclamation of post-mining land in order to find ways to transform nature in a rational and purposeful manner and to suggest specific reclamation approaches that may be appropriate in this region.

Grouting has been used in underground mining for more than 20 years. Chemical grouting is often used as a remedial measure when the implemented ground-control program is unable to completely prevent structural failures or when there is a need for preventing a structural member from unraveling. The utilization of polyurethane grout is restricted by its limited range of physical and mechanical properties. To overcome some of the drawbacks of polyurethane, research is being conducted on a newly developed polyester based grout. The polyester resin, identified by Sandvik as Strata Grip, provides a number of features, including variable gel times and a much-reduced chemical hazard. Equally important are the mechanical properties of the product. The strength and deformability of any chemical grout must be compatible with the intended purpose of grouting and the expected deformation of the rock that is to be grouted The assessment of the mechanical properties of polyester grout is the focus of this work. Field experiences and laboratory research defined the properties of an effective grouting material. Experimental results indicate that the polyester grout meets or exceeds the recommended properties for many injection applications. Furthermore, the results suggest that the ability to adjust mechanical properties via resin formulation has the potential to expand the applicability of chemical grouting in ground control.

A model assessment was made to evaluate contaminant transport to ground water from clay-lined and unlined tailings pits. The input hydrologic soil characteristics were measured on materials typical of those found at the Morton Ranch uranium mill site in central Wyoming. The assessment involved combined saturated and partially saturated flow and contaminant transport models for two-dimensional cross-sections typical of the proposed Morton Ranch burial pits. Specifically obtained from the models were contaminant flow paths, the advancing contaminant flow fronts for sorbed and non-sorbed constituents, and travel times of contaminants along flow paths. Such results enable evaluation of the environmental consequences for the alternative control methods.

Several optimization approaches used by the Canadian mining industry were used to investigate surface coal mining operations in Canada. A computer program was applied to optimize truck/shovel systems and for various analyses. The analyses of eight western Canadian coal mines included investigation of fleet imbalance, under- and over trucking, development of the criteria for automated truck control, comparison study of various haulers and loaders, haulage layout, driving conditions, machine performance, servicing and maintenance policies, etc. Each property investigated supplied background information for the study and cooperated in optimization studies. The truck/shovel system optimization study is demonstrated as a test case to outline procedures and step-by-step instruction for similar applications.

Bigger is indeed better in today's surface mining operations. That is especially true regarding haul trucks. Building larger, "supersize" trucks, however, means designing more powerful engines and drive systems that are also more efficient and environmentally friendly. And miners are demanding that these trucks have longer service lives with minimum maintenance. So truck makers are teaming with engine manufacturers and mining customers to design these larger trucks that will ultimately lead to reduced mining costs. About 180 of those truck makers, engine designers and miners gathered in Tucson, AZ in September to discuss the state of haul trucks in today's mining environment. Haulage 2000 was sponsored by World Mining Equipment and attracted attendees from around the world. Manufacturers described the latest in haul truck advancements. These included the design of more powerful engines, improvements to mechanical and ac and dc drive systems and suggestions on how to reduce maintenance spending. Technology improvements in tires for larger struck was discussed as was the cost efficiency of new, lighter-weight bed liners. The following is a summary of a handful of the presentations.

Areas of concern confronting the expanded use of coal for per generation include environmental, political and the nation's energy security and economy. These matters and available alternatives and options directed to the expanded use of coal are reviewed.

INTRODUCTION It is now 21 years since Wiegel and Li published their paper on a random version of Gaudin's model for the mineral liberation phenomenon (Wiegel and Li, 1967). This paper was to revitalise interest in North America in one of the most fascinating, difficult and important problems in the field of theoretical mineral processing. Gaudin had many years previously (Gaudin, 1939) already presented a penetrating analysis of the problem and Wiegel and Li based their analysis very closely on the Gaudin model but they realised that the indeterminate geometrical structure of mineralogical materials demanded that only probabilistic models could provide the necessary quantitative information when working with real materials. They proposed and solved a randomised version of the Gaudin model but retained the essential geometrical simplicity of cubic mineral grains and a cubic fracture pattern. Although their model met with some limited success it was to be superseded in due course. During the 1940's and 1950's the classical field of geometrical probability spawned the mathematical discipline of integral geometry and as early as 1965, Bodziony (1965, a,b) showed that the techniques of integral geometry could accommodate the problems associated with the indeterminate nature of the geometrical mineralogical structure, provided that these were couched in probabilistic terms. In particular he showed that the quantitative description of the comminution process and that of liberation could be decoupled with the resulting economy of effort. This idea has profoundly influenced the course of research in liberation theory and has greatly facilitated its application and the measurement of liberation in a practical way. Investigations of fine grinding of bituminous coal in a laboratory-scale pulverizer are described. The results indicate essentially "normal" breakage behavior at relatively coarse sizes (greater than about 20 µm) but show clear evidence for re-agglomeration in the fine size range (less than about 10 µm). A simplified population balance model for simultaneous growth and breakage has been formulated. Breakage rates and breakage distributions are assumed to follow the patterns typically observed in simple grinding systems. It is recognized, however, that solid particles and agglomerates may exhibit different breakage behavior. Agglomeration rates are assumed to be determined by contact probability, i.e. by the relative numbers of interacting particles. Based on comparisons of model simulations and experimental data, it appears that agglomerate re-breakage rates and fragment size distributions are quite different from those for solid particles. The result is that product size passes through a minimum and then increases with time as agglomeration begins to dominate.

The, control of drilling and blasting is a complicated dynamic system whose aim is to ensure safety and prepare rock of required grade and the standard level of broken material reserves Unlike other processes drilling and blasting, as an object have the following features: -a large variety of drilling and blasting methods due to specific conditions of blasting, various types of drilling equipment, schemes-of blasting, types of explosives and others; -relative continuity of drilling, the character of mammoth blasts being discrete; -increased requirements to the safety of blasting;; -a great. number of control parameters, some of them having a qualitative characteristic but not a quantitative one; -availability of feedforward and feedback with other mining processes in terms of time and space. These features predetermine the hierarchical structure of an automated system of planning and control of drilling and blasting (fig.1). The system is implemented on the basis of unity of the data base and in interre lation with other problems of controlling mining operations. An automated system of this kind makes it possible to take optimal decisions actually on all the levels and stages of operations, with rock having been blasted before extraction.

Thiohydrometallurgical systems including thiosulfate, thiocyanate and thiourea have been stud- ied as alternative liriviants for the leaching of gold. Research and development of thiohydrometallurgical technology has been prompted by environmental concerns with the use of cyanide and problems associated with the processing of difficult-to-treat ores. These thiosystems have some chemical similarities, enabling gold to be leached in a practical oxidizing environment. However, the solution chemistry of the thiosystems is complicated due to instability of the thioreagents and many other reactions which occur during the gold leaching reaction. In this paper, interference reactions of selected metal ions and sulfide minerals are examined in order to understand important aspects of solution chemistry which control the stability of the thioleaching reactions. Applications using thioreagents as lixiviants for oxide and refractory gold ores are presented.

Rock thermophysical properties, i.e. heat conductivity and thermal diffusivity, were obtained for reference values at the Waldo Test Mine for mine fire simulation purposes. An in situ measurement method was chosen since it could include the effect of rock fractures. The REKA method (Rapid Evaluation of k and alpha) was used because it can measure conductivity (k) and diffusivity (alpha) simultaneously within an eight-hour measurement period. A total of six measurements were taken in three different holes, and at two different depths from the collar of the hole. Each measurement provided an averaged conductivity and diffusivity for a volume of rock of approximately one cubic meter. The boreholes were driven into the upper and lower limestone, two at right angles to and one parallel to, the stratification of the rock. Significant representative conductivity and diffusivity values were obtained for the whole mine by averaging the six measurement results. The thermal properties for the band of shale in between the two limestones were not measured in situ, but only in the laboratory. Problems were encountered in the evaluation because of unexpected heat conduction on one side of the symmetrically built probe. A modification was made to the previously developed evaluation method together with further testing and correction, before the final results were obtained. As expected, the in situ and lab- oratory measured values of k and alpha compared favorably, since the in situ rock was dry and relatively unstressed.

Until its closure in 1999, the Antler was North America's only active chlorite mine. The mine is located 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Butte in the Silver Star district - an old Montana gold mining district. In 1975, two prospectors searching for talc re-examined a prospect showing a green, fine-grained mineral resembling talc. Following identification and testing of this magnesian chlorite (variety clinochlore), Cyprus Industrial Minerals began processing ore from this deposit in 1976. Chlorite veins ranging up to 30 feet (9 m) in thickness were formed by essentially complete replacement of Precambrian (Archean?) quartzofeldspathic gneiss. Chlorite replacement was controlled by near- vertical faults. These chlorite veins, typically surrounded by envelopes of sericitic alteration, were formed by the introduction of magnesium-rich hydrothermal fluids, probably related to the Proterozoic talc-forming event in southwestern Montana. Luzenac America, Inc. acquired Cyprus' talc operations in 1992, and continued to mine this deposit until the ore body was mined out in March 1999, and the mine was reclaimed. Total sorted ore production from this deposit is about 250,000 short tons (st) (227,000 metric tons [mt]). Chlorite from this deposit was primarily used in ceramic and paint applications.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to introduce the reader to basic control strategies for solid/liquid separation in mineral processing and to indicate some of the implementation difficulties to be encountered, without becoming overly involved in details of process, equipment or software. It is assumed that the reader has some familiarity with control systems and with dewatering processes, since exploration of these topics would require considerably more length. The paper is organized into three parts: first a general discussion on the need for control of dewatering processes and of the general criteria involved, next a more detailed elaboration on control strategies for the various unit operations, and finally a case study showing a specific approach towards such a project. Motivation & Objectives The justification for implementing any control system in an industrial plant is to improve operations and thereby to increase profitability. Without this motivation, the system will likely be perceived as unnecessary and will decline into disuse, an expensive and troublesome monument to someone's ill-conceived ideas. However, when a control strategy is correctly conceived, implemented and integrated into operations, it can provide significant advantages in operating ease and efficiency, and a handsome return on investment. In general terms, the objectives in establishing a control system are: • stabilization of process disturbances maintenance of product quality • maximization of throughput • dearer definition of process • protection of personnel and equipment A successful control strategy must address at least some of the above criteria. However, the most important requirement is a commitment on the part of plant personnel and management to start up, operate and maintain the system, and to upgrade it to reflect current process status and operational philosophy. Process Applications In this paper, control strategies will be explored for the most common methods of dewatering of mineral pulps. These unit operations include: drying, centrifuging, filtering and sedimentation. In coal-bearing formations, seams are often bounded by sedimentary layers of mudstone, claystone or shale. When the electrical conductivity of the surrounding sediment layers is greater than the conductivity of the seam, a natural parallel plate waveguide forms in the strata. For frequencies below the AM broadcast band, the waveguide can be used for the transmission of electromagnetic (EM) waves. In a uniform seam, the primary wave travels in the coal layer along paths between a radiating antenna and a distant receiving antenna. The travel distance increases with seam height and the conductivity of the surrounding sediment layers. The distance decreases with increased coal conductivity. In Cretaceous western bituminous coal, the distance may exceed 549 m (1800 ft). Anomalous geologic disturbance zones such as faults, shear zones, paleochannels, sills and dikes significantly alter the values of EM wave propagation constants (attenuation and phase) expected in a uniform seam. In the neighborhood of an anomaly, EM wave energy is scattered (reflected and diffracted). Scattering creates secondary waves in the seam wave guide. A receiving antenna at a remote location in the coal seam can be used to measure the magnitude and phase of the EM wave at the end of the path. The measured data can be processed to determine the average value of the propagation constants along each path. Paths with anomalous propagation constants are used to locate and image geologic disturbance zones. Radio Imaging Method (RIM) instrumentation, survey procedures and data processing (tomography) algorithms have been developed to image geologic structure in advance of mining. The survey is conducted between gate roads of a longwall panel. Data processing constructs contours of constant attenuation rate (phase constant) across the plan view of the panel. In anomalous zones, the contours rapidly change with distance. The shape of the contour lines generates a visual image of the anomaly and suggests the type of anomalous condition to be expected in the coal seam. This paper briefly discusses the depositional environment and the formation of the imperfect waveguide in coal-bearing strata. The linkage between sedimentary geology and EM wave theory establishes an understanding of how the propagation constants depend on the anomalous geologic conditions. A case study compares in-mine geologic mapping with the tomographic image of a longwall panel.

Australia is the world's largest coal exporter, and technological advancement is a key element of the coal industry strategy. The issues include: increased recovery of saleable coal; enhanced quality, i.e. lower ash, moisture, fines, phosphorus (sulphur is a relatively minor problem for Australian coals); better quality control; higher throughputs/lower costs; improved handling and transport; and reduced environmental impacts. In process terms, many coal preparation operations, particularly fine coal circuits, are relatively inefficient, and all circuits must also be matched and integrated for optimum overall operation. A holistic approach to technological improvement is desirable. This paper summarises research and development efforts, within CSIRO and its collaborators, across the unit operations as outlined in the title.

Conditions affecting minerals investments are continuing to change at an increasing rate, and in this paper we will attempt to predict the course of mine financing in the future. We will first review the situation historically and then examine the problems and constraints that are now making the financing task more difficult. Suggested solutions are discussed, and a new method of financing a group of mining projects is hypothesized.
