Samples of four different satellite materials were prepared by either hot isostatic pressing (HIP) of the powder or tungsten inert-gas welding of rod onto a 316 L stainless-steel substrate. The samples were subjected to a series of comparative erosion corrosion tests, and generally the Hipped samples experienced between 13 and 24 per cent less loss in mass than the equivalent welded alloys. Resistance to erosion corrosion increased with increasing carbon, chromium, and tungsten contents. Metallographic studies indicated the differences in carbide content between the different satellite materials, and the differences in morphology between the Hipped and welded samples. "The aim of any mine design is to ensure that the excavations remain stable for the period they will be in use. Various pillar systems are used to ensure that underground stopes remain stable and that mining activities do not affect the surface infrastructure through either surface subsidence or seismicity. Intermediate-depth platinum mines make use of in-stope pillars designed to fail while the pillars are being cut at the mining face. The pillar stress exceeds the loading capacity and the pillars crush as a result. The aim of the paper is to provide an overview of in-stope crush pillars. This will include the application, behaviour, function, mechanism, impact, and design of a crush pillar system."

Magotteaux, with the co-operation of Anglo Platinum, has erected a fully instrumented pilot plant at Frank concentrator, which is being used to study the influence of a variety of grinding parameters. This paper will discuss only the influence of mill speed and pulp density on secondary stage grinding. A Ø0.82 x1 m open circuit mill was used with reclaimed Merensky tailings as feed. The conclusions apply to this pilot plant but further investigation needs to be done to verify whether the same trends will be applicable to a large industrial-scale mill.

"The long-term plan (LTP) in a mineral resource company is defined by the quality of the mineral resource and represents the result of a series of trade-offs to fulfil internal organizational as well as external business and legislative requirements, ensuring ultimate delivery on the defined organizational strategy.The LTP should as a whole align to a coherent and well-defined organizational strategy, working towards a clearly defined objective while still allowing a tactical response to short-term requirements of the organization. The ability to respond tactically to changes in environment, like the unprecedented five-month strike in 2014 on the platinum belt following the 2012 Marikana incident, is a measure of the flexibility of the plan given the agreed strategy.This paper describes the Lonmin process of linking company strategy with long-term planning, tactical planning, and the execution of the plan through an annual planning cycle to maximize organizational flexibility. This flexibility enables mining companies to respond to the many internal and external forces that impact on both strategy formulation and delivery of results that meet shareholder expectations."

It is predicted that vast volumes of affected mine water will be produced by mining activities in the Mpumalanga coalfields of South Africa. The potential environmental impact of this excess water is of great concern in a water-scarce country like South Africa. Research over a period of more than 10 years has shown that this water can be used successfully for the irrigation of a range of crops (Annandale et al., 2002)1. There is, however, continuing concern from the local regulators regarding the long-term impact that large-scale mine water irrigation may have on groundwater quality and quantity. Detailed research has been undertaken over the last three years to supplement the groundwater monitoring programme at five different pilot sites, on both virgin soils (greenfields) and in coalmining spoils. These sites range from sandy soils to very clayey soils. The research has included soil moisture measurements, collection of in situ soil moisture over time, long-term laboratory studies of the leaching and attenuation properties of different soils and the impact of irrigation on acid rock drainage processes, and in depth determination of the hydraulic properties of the subsurface at each of these sites, including falling head tests, pumping tests and point dilution tests. This has been supported by geochemical modelling of these processes to quantify the impacts. The results indicate that many of the soils have considerable attenuation capacities and that in the period of irrigation, a large proportion of the salts have been contained in the upper portions of the unsaturated zones below each irrigation pivot. The volumes and quality of water leaching through to the aquifers have been quantified at each site. A colloquium on 'Developments in the Mechanization of Mining Operations' was held in, conjunction with the 1984 Electra Mining Exhibition, at the Milpark Holiday Inn in Johannesburg on 19th September, 1984. An attendance of close on 200 delegates was testimony to the popularity of the subject. The delegates included a number of visitors from abroad, including senior members of the management of foreign companies and a member of the Council of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, United Kingdom. Both the local and foreign press was also represented.

Transportation accounts for some 26% of all mine accidents in South Africa. Although this figure may not be as prolific as fall of grounds accidents or accidents caused by seismic events, the enormity of transportation accidents demands attention, especially as many of these accidents are avoidable. This paper investigates vertical (i.e. shaft), horizontal (i.e. haulages), and in-stope transportation systems and their function as it applies to safety. Recent transportation accidents are discussed looking at current trends within the three transportation areas. In the shaft area, discussions will focus on handling of material cars, loading and off-loading of the workforce and management of shaft orepass systems. The horizontal component will focus on personnel transportation, safety around trains and hoppers, and handling of material in the cross-cut. The discussion on in-stope transportation will focus on the general congestion of the stope environment and how it affects the overall movement of personnel, material, and rock. Of concern are the large numbers of material handling and scraper winch accidents that occur and which will be discussed in some detail. The paper will conclude with a section on proposed guidelines within the three above-mentioned systems for mine engineers to consider in mine design and life of mine planning and scheduling. In a gravity separation device, particle shape, size and density all play a role. The combination of these determines where each individual particle reports to in the viscous fluid, where particle crowding (solids to water ratio) also plays a role. To understand the performance of gravity separation devices in the heavy mineral industry, these particle characteristics need to be measured. There are various challenges in analysing particle density and particle size simultaneously for the purpose of quantifying gravity separator performance, not to mention particle shape. These analytical challenges include the high cost of high-density sink-float fractionation, toxicity of high-density sink-float media, inability of sink-float media to fractionate at densities greater than 4.0 g/cm3, and the time-intensive nature of these fractionations. The use of the detailed particle-by-particle output from Qemscan® particle mineral analyses (PMA) as a fast and cost-effective alternative is evaluated. The size and density outputs from the Qemscan® were employed to characterize the performance of a heavy mineral spiral concentrator as an example. Techniques used to safely control the roof in UK coal mines for some 10 years have been applied to a South African coal mine. This new approach known in the UK as advanced rockbolting technology, is based on applying four fundamental principles: ?Understanding the roof failure mechanisms ?Using an effective roof support system ?Designing this support using measurement ?Monitoring the performance of the system. The paper summarizes the approach in detail and describes how it is being applied by Anglo Coal, giving results obtained to date. Investigations at a number of South African coal mines, including stress measurements at two Anglo Coal mines, have confirmed that the mode of roof failure (lateral shearing due to horizontal stress) is the same as in other coalfields worldwide, and aspects of current world best practice, including the use of advanced technology rockbolting, are therefore relevant in South Africa. The stress measurements indicated a high level of stress field anisotropy and further investigation of stress conditions in South African coal mines is recommended. The most effective bolting system to resist shear failure is one with high bond strength and stiffness. Short encapsulation pull testing of existing South African systems confirmed that they have low bond strength and stiffness. An improved rockbolt system with the required performance, and features allowing rapid installation and installation quality and performance audit, has been developed and is currently under full-scale trial. Design by measurement and routine monitoring procedures including the use of a rotary telltale device are also under trial. It is anticipated that South African coal mines will be able to obtain significant safety and productivity benefits from the application of this technology.

3D seismic surveys have become a well-accepted method of imaging sub-surface geology in the Bushveld Basin. Because both the seismic sources and receivers are placed at surface, most surveys are limited to imaging faults with >=7 m throw. However, some areas such as shaft infrastructure can benefit from the ability to detect smaller structures prior to shaft sinking. Borehole radar and logs such as the acoustic televiewer can identify these structures in the shaft barrel, but not within -200 m from the shaft. Therefore, Anglo Platinum has developed the method of high-resolution 3D vertical seismic profiles (VSPs) for structural sterilization of shaft sites prior to shaft sinking. VSPs utilize a surface source and sub-surface receivers deployed down a borehole. This means that seismic energy goes through the near surface only once, and therefore suffers less frequency loss than when both source and receivers are on surface. Furthermore, VSPs can record 3 component (3C) data which comprises P wave, Sh (horizontal) and Sv (vertical) wavemodes. Because S waves travel at about 0.6 of the velocity of a P wave, shorter wavelengths and therefore higher resolutions are possible using S wave data. VSPs were first used in their one dimensional, zero offset, mode to correlate borehole geology with seismic stratigraphy within seismic surveys. This showed that VSPs record -30% higher frequencies than surface seismic surveys. The program then applied two dimensional VSPs to the problem of imaging geological structure close to a borehole. 2D VSPs confirmed that high frequency results could be achieved, and that this enabled a more accurate image of the Merensky Reef than could be achieved by surface seismic data. Finally, the program has achieved the successful recording and processing of 3D VSP data, with both compressional and shear wavemodes giving a high resolution structural result. Although P wave data gives -30% frequency improvement over surface seismic surveys, S wave data can give as much as 80% improvement, further improving the structural image achieved. The high fixed costs of VSP surveys mean that they should ideally be run in multi-client batches, which can reduce the per borehole cost by up to 50%. Their application is anticipated to be on high value capital infrastructure with a geological risk from faults which are not imaged by surface seismics-generally in the sub-7 m range. Hydrocyclones are a common feature in almost all mining operations in the world, serving mainly as classifiers. Some of their advantages include low capital costs, low space requirements and their ability to reduce residence time in closed circuit grinding processes. Although an extensive body of literature exists for hydrocyclones, these devices are still inherently inefficient, and more research is currently being undertaken, particularly in the field of modelling. In the vast body of hydrocyclone literature published so far, there has been little or no effort devoted to analysing the effect of the cone force ratio on the performance of hydrocyclones. The cone force ratio is defined as the ratio of the spigot to the vortex finder diameter (Shah, 2005). In this study a total of 44 tests was carried out in a custom-built rig at the University of Cape Town. These tests were aimed at evaluating the effect of the cone force ratio on the performance of as mall diameter hydrocyclone. The cut size and water split were used as the criterion for evaluating the performance of the hydrocyclone. Results from the tests showed that the cut size decreased with an increase in the cone force ratio. The cut size also appeared to decrease as the calculated locus of zero vertical velocity (LZVV) shifted inwards. The water recovery to the underflow appeared to increase with an increase in the cone force ratio. The effect on the cut size of adjusting the cone force ratio was found to be higher for a coarser feed than it was for a finer feed.

The Unit of Toxicological Risk Assessment of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) is conducting a 'Health Risk Assessment for Metallic Chromium and Trivalent Chromium' under the sponsorship of the International Chromium Development Association (ICDA) and the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF). This risk assessment will be conducted in accordance with the current European Union legislation in force (Council Regulation 793/93/EEC, Commission Regulation 1488/94/EEC, Dir. 67/548/EEC), but also to meet the regulatory obligations as set out in the European Commission REACH legislation proposal (Consultation Document, the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restrictions of CHemicals). Further aims include outlining the criteria for the setting of occupational exposure limits for metallic chromium and trivalent chromium compounds. Human Health Risk Assessment according to the current legislation shall entail hazard identification of the toxic end points (acute toxicity, irritation/corrosivity, sensitisation, repeated dose toxicity, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity) including, as appropriate, dose (concentration) - response assessment, and derivation of the N(L)OAELs (No (Lowest) Observed Adverse Effect Level) and/or DNELs (Derived No Effect Level). Exposure assessments for workers, consumers and humans exposed via the environment take into account all the known intended uses. Risk characterisation will compare the typical and/or reasonable worst case exposure estimates to the N(L)OAELs or DNELs to determine Margins of Safety (MOS) for all human populations by each exposure scenario and type of effect, followed by conclusions about the presence or absence of risk. Although all of the key elements of existing legislation remain in REACH, the principal change is that, the burden of proof will be transferred from the member state authorities to industry. The new proposed format of Chemical Safety Report (CSR) will include Risk Management Measures (RMM) as an essential part of the report in addition to the risk assessment. The RMM plays a role in the evaluation of further testing needs and advocating reasons for possible waiwer of requirements. The research programme started in March 2002 and will be completed within the time frame of two years.

Wettability of graphite by synthetic SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MnO slags with varied MnO content and by industrial slags was studied at 1350-1600 °C using sessile drop method under argon atmosphere. Initial contact angle was the lowest (110-115o) for the MnO-free slag. For slags with 10-40 wt% MnO, the initial contact angle was in the range 125-135o. The contact angle decreased with the contact time. The change in the contact angle with slag mass was found insignificant. The surface tension of slags obtained from the drop shape analyses was 500-800 mN/m and varied in a narrow range with temperature and MnO concentration. The reduction rate increased with increasing MnO content in the synthetic slag from 20 wt% to 40wt% and temperature. Increasing temperature also increased the rate of reduction. No correlation was observed between the reduction rate and MnO content in the synthetic slags in the range 0-20 wt% and in the industrial slags. The rate of SiO2 reduction from the molten slag was close to the rate of MnO reduction. The MnO-free slag had the largest contact area with graphite substrate. Mineral exploration programmes around the world use data from remote sensing, geophysics, and direct sampling. On a regional scale, the combination of airborne geophysics and ground-based geochemical sampling can aid geological mapping and mineral exploration. Since airborne geophysical and traditional soil-sampling data are generated at different spatial resolutions, they are not immediately comparable due to their different sampling density. Several geostatistical techniques, including indicator cokriging and collocated cokriging, can be used to integrate different types of data into a geostatistical model. However, with increasing numbers of variables the inference of the crosscovariance model required for cokriging can be demanding in terms of effort and computational time. In this paper a Gaussian-based Bayesian updating approach is applied to integrate airborne radiometric data and ground-sampled geochemical soil data to maximize information generated from the soil survey, enabling more accurate geological interpretation for the exploration and development of natural resources. The Bayesian updating technique decomposes the collocated estimate into two models: prior and likelihood models. The prior model is built from primary information and the likelihood model is built from secondary information. The prior model is then updated with the likelihood model to build the final model. The approach allows multiple secondary variables to be simultaneously integrated into the mapping of the primary variable. The Bayesian updating approach is demonstrated using a case study from Northern Ireland. The geostatistical technique was used to improve the resolution of soil geochemistry, at a density of one sample per 2 km2, by integrating more closely measured airborne geophysical data from the GSNI Tellus Survey, measured over a footprint of 65 x 200 m. The directly measured geochemistry data were considered as primary data and the airborne radiometric data were used as secondary data. The approach produced more detailed updated maps and in particular enhanced information on the mapped distributions of zinc, copper, and lead. The enhanced delineation of an elongated northwest/southeast trending zone in the updated maps strengthened the potential for discovering stratabound base metal deposits..

The risk associated with mining induced seismicity is one of the major threats to the safety and sustainability of deep underground mines. This paper describes techniques that allow site practitioners to efficiently control such risks in mines. The proposed approaches rely on ground support to strategically control seismic risk and re-entry time to tactically control this risk. The strategic approach is based on the detailed understanding of past seismicity to as certain the seismic hazard of individual sources throughout the mine. This approach also relies on assessing the potential damage that these sources can induce on nearby excavations using the excavation vulnerability potential (EVP) and rockburst damage potential (RDP) concepts proposed by Heal et al. (2006). It is then possible to investigate how to reduce the risk of experiencing damaging seismicity in mine drives by locally enhancing the ground support system. The tactical approach relies on a proposed methodology to estimate reliable re-entry times or exclusion periods based on the seismic decay following blasting. Some examples of how these techniques have been applied in Australian mines are given.

The large proportion of gangue minerals present in platinum bearing ores in South Africa provides challenges to the flotation and downstream processes. In order to take effective measures to reduce their recovery in flotation, an understanding of the mechanisms and factors influencing their behaviour is needed. Typical gangue minerals are pyroxene, feldspar, quartz, chromite and talc. Of these, talc is a naturally hydrophobic mineral and although it is present in relatively small quantities, it has a disproportionate effect as it has a strong froth stabilizing effect, increasing the recovery of other gangue minerals by entrainment. Talc recovery is effectively reduced with the addition of polymeric depressants. Although the other gangue minerals are assumed to be hydrophilic and their recovery by entrainment is expected to follow the water recovery, there is some evidence that they may be activated by the typical reagent suites used. Reagents such as copper sulphate, added as an activator, and collectors are used to selectively induce hydrophobicity on the sulphides. It has been shown that some of these gangue minerals can be activated. This research work investigates whether inadvertent copper activation is mineral specific and evaluates the mechanisms and factors affecting the reversal of activation with the addition of the depressants using electrokinetic measurements, adsorption and microflotation tests. Results are presented that show that the selected minerals do respond differently and that the reversal of activation is dependent on mineral type, depressant type, dosage and ionic strength of the electrolyte.

The applicability of a stochastic approach to the simulation of gold distribution to assess the uncertainty of the associated mineralization is examined. A practical workflow for similar problems is proposed. Two different techniques are explored in this research: a Direct Sampling multi-point simulation algorithm is used for generating realizations of lithologies hosting the gold mineralization, and sequential Gaussian simulation is applied to generate multiple realizations of gold distributions within the host lithologies. A range of parameters in the Direct Sampling algorithm is investigated to arrive at good reproducibility of the patterns found in the training image. These findings are aimed at assisting in the choice of appropriate parameters when undertaking the simulation step. The resulting realizations are analysed in order to assess the combined uncertainty associated with the lithology and gold mineralization.

The modulus of elasticity of rock material (Ei) is an important rock property that is used as an input parameter in the design stage of engineering projects such as dam and tunnel constructions, mining excavations, and so forth. However, determination of the modulus of elasticity is sometimes difficult to obtain by laboratory tests because high-quality cores are required. For this reason, empirical methods for predicting the modulus of elasticity of rock material have been popular research topics in recently published literature. In this study, the relationships between the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), unit weight (?) and modulus of elasticity for different types of rocks were analysed by using 177 data obtained from laboratory tests carried out on cores obtained from drill holes within the area of the Kadiköy-Kartal Metro line (Istanbul, Turkey). The extraction of copper(II) from sulphate solution was investigated using LIX®984N in kerosene. The parameters that could affect the extraction, such as equilibrium pH, extractant concentration, salt concentration, various diluents, and temperature, were separately investigated. On the basis of slope analysis, the complex formed in the organic phase is proposed to be CuR2, where R is the anionic part of LIX®984N. The extraction equilibrium constant and Gibbs free energy ( G) of the extraction process were determined. The positive value of H obtained from temperature variation studies showed that the extraction process is endothermic. The extraction of copper was lowest when chloroform was used as the diluent. Separation and recovery of copper from a synthetic copper-nickel solution containing 6.35 g/L Cu(II) and 0.58 g/L Ni(II) was carried out using 20%(v/v) LIX® 984N. The separation factor ( = DCu/DNi) was found to be pH-dependent. A two-stage batch countercurrent extraction was carried out at an O:A ratio of 3:4 at equilibrium pH 1.05 for extraction of copper from copper-nickel solution, followed by copper stripping from the loaded organic phase with 15% H2SO4 at an O:A ratio of 3:1.
