This paper reviews the development and suitability of various important thermophysical and electrical properties with respect to base metal mattes. Areas of focus include the critical validation of measurements of viscosity, density, surface and interfacial tension, electrical conductivity, and an overview of the various experimental methods used to determine these properties. Accurate physical property data of mattes are critical in process modelling and computational fluid dynamic modelling of smelting and converting operations employed in the extraction of copper, nickel, cobalt and platinum group metals.

South Africa has produced more than a third of the total gold mined throughout history and remains a major although, until recently, no longer the largest producer of gold. South African gold production peaked in 1970 with an output of 1 000 t, a major component of the western world?s gold production, with the development of the country?s economy having been based largely on this mineral wealth. The costs and difficulties of increasingly deep-level mining, coupled with increasing labour costs and the low gold price until relatively recently, have seen production fall steadily since then, with the closure of many mines including those of the Central Rand Goldfield in the mid seventies. Thus in 1998, only 464 t were produced, with 342 tons being produced in 2004. In 2006, 275 tons of gold were produced and after more than 100 years was the last year as the world?s largest gold producer. In 2008 gold production was 221 tons, making South Africa the third largest gold producer after China (292 t) and the USA (234 t). Gold production would have been lower if it had not been for massive tailings dam retreatment operations that started in the late seventies, including in the Central Rand Goldfield. Mining of a remaining deep and lower grade shallow resources has now also become a major focus and has recently lead to a rebirth of reef mining on the Central Rand Goldfield.

The microbial leaching of metal sulfides is now an established biotechnological technology. Over the past 25 years, refinements in the engineering design of bioleaching processes have paralleled advances in our understanding of the diversity and role of the micro-organisms driving the process and the mechanisms by which micro-organisms enhance metal sulfide oxidation. Commercial success started with the treatment of refractory gold concentrates using mesophilic micro-organisms, followed by the development of tank bioleaching processes for the treatment of base metal concentrates. This was, initially, a mesophilic process with limited potential for recovery of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates due to slow rates and low copper extractions. The exploitation of thermophiles represents a major breakthrough in the development of bioleaching technology for the treatment of chalcopyrite-containing ores and concentrates. This development also opened the route to heap bioleaching of chalcopyrite ores, which is now a major focus of research programmes and piloting campaigns. This paper reviews the historical development of minerals bioleaching processes and gives an update on the current status of commercial tank and heap bioleach operations around the world.

The comparison study on adsorption of potassium normal butyl xanthate (PNBX) and sodium (nbutyl) dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC) on sperrylite mineral forms a basis in understanding the floatability improvement and paves a way for the design of collectors that may impact on a wide range of arsenide minerals. This study used a computational density functional theory (DFT) and experimental microcalorimetry approach to determine the adsorption energies of PNBX and SNBDTC collectors onto a sperrylite mineral surface. From a computational aspect, we considered the most stable surface plane of (100) surface, which had been found to give the lowest surface energy, compared to the other surface planes. It was observed that the PNBX and SNBDTC preferred to bridge on the As and Pt atoms through the S atoms. These findings showed that the collector adsorbed on the surface through both Pt and As atoms and indicated that the As atoms were significantly active in the adsorptions. We found that the adsorption energies were in the order: SNBDTC (–278.38 kJ/mol) > PNBX (–270.92 kJ/mol), indicating that the dithiocarbamate had stronger exothermic adsorption than the xanthate. From the microcalorimetry test it was also found that the SNBDTC was more exothermic than the PNBX and the adsorption energies were: SNBDTC (–473.50 kJ/mol) > PNBX (–331.13 kJ/mol). These results showed that the nitrogen atom in the SNBDTC collector had a great influence on the adsorption strength of the collector on the mineral surface. This is due to the electron deposition behaviour of nitrogen atoms compared to the electron withdrawing character of oxygen and as such the SNBDTC showed better collecting ability than the PNBX. These results paved the way for the design of collectors for sperrylite and other arsenide minerals and suggested that nitrogen in a collector may significantly improve the ability of the collector for improved recovery. Primary roof support represents the first line of defence against rockrelated falls of ground in underground mines, and improper utilization or misunderstanding of the applicability and behaviour of primary support can be costly from a safety standpoint. This is a major concern for underground mines, as roof support is the single most costly expense from a mining operational perspective. This is further backed by the evidence that, in the USA, hundreds of injuries and fatalities still occur each year because of rib, roof, and massive roof falls. Additionally, the fully-grouted passive rebar, fully-grouted tension rebar, and resin-assisted mechanical anchor bolts, which constitute a large portion (89%) of the 68 million bolts installed each year in underground mines in the USA can vary in cost quite dramatically. To mitigate this concern a study was conducted in 2010 by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, in conjunction with Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, to assess the performance of primary roofbolts in underground coal mines for improved safety and cost. This was accomplished using underground roofbolt monitoring solutions, field data, and numerical modelling to better understand the quasi-static behaviour of underground coal mine roofs and the response behaviour of the bolts. In particular, over 170 instrumented extensometers, closure meters, shear meters, fully-grouted passive rebar, fully-grouted tension rebar, and resin-assisted mechanical roofbolts were installed at three coal mines across the USA. Of these three mines, two used the room and pillar extraction method and the other used the longwall extraction method. There was no evidence to indicate a difference in performance of the active primary roofbolts compared with the passive primary roofbolts. Additionally, in the initial loading phase, the active bolts showed no difference in loading, indicating that tension bleed-off is of more of a concern than originally thought. Lastly, for the initial computer modelling studies, challenges still remain in obtaining a good match to the in situ bolt measurements and replicating the discontinuous roof rock and in situ bolt behaviour over time.

Ferritic stainless steel is utilized to fabricate automotive exhaust systems using a ferritic weld metal. Ductility of the weld metal is higher if its microstructure contains a significant proportion of equiaxed grains. The formation of equiaxed (rather than columnar) grains is favoured by a higher titanium weld metal content. In this study, the Ti content of ferritic stainless steel weld metal was changed by using Tifree (Type 436) and Ti-containing (441) ferritic stainless steel as base metals. The metal-cored welding consumable contained 0.4% Ti. Gas–tungsten arc welding and gas–metal arc welding processes were compared. The weld metal Ti content ranged from zero to 0.5% Ti, as determined from scanning electron microscopy supplemented by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. Cross-sections of the weld beads were subjected to point counting (to estimate the fraction of equiaxed grains) and image analysis (to estimate the average grain size). Point counting proved to be more reliable. The fraction of equiaxed grains was sensitive to the Ti content, but not to the welding process. Below 0.4% Ti, the fraction of equiaxed grains gradually increased with an increase in the weld metal Ti content; above 0.4% Ti, the fraction of equiaxed grains rapidly increased with increasing Ti content. The transition in behaviour at 0.4% Ti corresponded to a Ti content at which Ti-rich precipitates became stable at the estimated liquidus temperature of the weld metal.

There is often a need to increase capacity through existing mist eliminator installations without significant tower modifications. Often there is not enough extra space outside existing vessels unless more expensive changes can be justified. Also, plant downtime must be considered. The challenge in retrofitting is to overcome velocity limitations inherent in the design while at the same time extend performance capability. The solution most often is to create new ways to add extra filter area while remaining constrained to the existing space. This strategy, however, can dangerously backfire if basic design principles are not followed. Mist eliminator design is a complex integration of many conflicting performance parameters. Often the objective is to increase scrubbing capacity while maximizing collection efficiency and service life and minimizing operating pressure drop (energy cost), particle regeneration (re-entrainment) and overall maintenance costs. Results of plant retrofitting using mesh pads, impaction fibre beds and diffusion fibre beds are presented based on actual plant projects. Often the retrofit project can be more effective by increasing the scope and combining other new plant equipment with the upgrade such as new tower components. In some cases, the type of mist eliminators can be upgraded from impaction type (velocity dependent) to Brownian diffusion type (velocity independent) if additional downstream protection or reduced emissions are desirable, especially at turndown rates. Trade-offs between different fibre bed types and styles are discussed as they relate to performance and maintenance.

Phosphate ore is an important strategic mineral resource in which apatite is the main valuable mineral. Flotation is the most commonly used method to separate apatite from middle-low grade phosphate rock. Selective flotation separation is based on the difference of physical and chemical properties of minerals occurring at the three interfaces of mineral/bubble/water. Surface and interface chemistry of mineral have been playing an important role in interpreting and governing its flotation phenomenon. In-situ, visualized and high-precision analytical techniques, such as Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Atomic Force Microscopy and Molecular Simulation, have been applied to explore and uncover microscopic nature of apatite flotation. Consequently, a great progress at molecular or atomic level on surface and interface chemistry of apatite flotation has achieved in the past decades. In this paper, the research progress of surface and interface chemistry of apatite flotation such as surface wettability, surface-charging characteristics, surface dissolution behavior, adsorption mechanisms of fatty acid collector and depressor on apatite surface were systematically reviewed. This review will be helpful for the development of more selective reagents and efficient technologies for apatite flotation. Good blasting practices based on the careful application of explosive energy lead to significantly safer mining operations. Case studies demonstrate how the selection of the correct charge mass, explosive type and round design are vital for extracting the exact amount of rock required and preventing spurious damage to the remaining rock mass. In other cases the explosives are applied to precondition the rock mass, design rockburst resistant support, prevent damage to important excavations and reduce the exposure of miners to unsafe conditions. The Hybrid Stress Blasting Model is used to understand the explosive rock interaction and to illustrate and contrast good and bad blasting practices. In all cases, good supervision is required to continue safe mining according to the design. A simplified economic model is derived for the financial return from a new gold mining project. The model is used to analyze the effects of changes in the mining rate, capital costs, working costs, value of the reef and the stoping width. The most effective avenues for improving the return from a new project are indicated. It is shown that those technological innovations which would improve the return significantly, and therefore make it possible to open more mines, are the use of smaller mines, means for improving the mining rate to capital costs ratio for smaller mines, planning and control of mines by computer simulation, an improved mine valuation procedure and means for mining at a decreased stope tramming width.

The quantitative evaluation of the performance of fill materials placed in gold mine stopes is achieved by (i) measurement of the in-situ load- displacement, or stress-strain, characteristics of the materials; (ii) an objective comparison between the observed fill performance and that predicted from suitable computer modelling techniques; and (iii) objectively comparing conditions in backfilled and conventional stopes. Considerable problems have been experienced with the development of sufficiently robust instrumentation which can be installed within filled pad- docks and give reliable information over a long period of time. However, at most mines where backfill performance is being monitored, it has been possible to correlate stress measurements within the filled paddocks with strain measurements adjacent to the paddocks. The resultant stress-strain curves agree relatively well with those determined in the laboratory. Measurements in the hangingwall strata of filled and unfilled stopes indicate that the placement of fill does reduce the amount of inelastic convergence due to bed separation. Moreover, in some stopes, the rate of convergence with respect to face advance does reduce to that of the theoretical elastic convergence. Quantification of changes in the conditions at the stope face due to placement of fill has proved difficult. Observations indicate that, provided the fill is placed close to the face (- 5 m), and adequate temporary face support is used, conditions in filled panels are superior. In addition, in filled panels the damage caused by a rockburst in the stope and, particularly, in gullies is generally much less than would be expected in an unfilled stope. To quantify these improvements, parameters such as stope height, face advance and the frequency of falls of ground are being monitored.

"The coal strength parameter is used in operations such as the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing/grinding equipment. However, coring or cutting prismatic specimens from coal for the standard strength tests is difficult, and sometimes not possible. For this reason a method for the indirect determination of coal strength from easy tests would be useful. In this study, the predictability of coal strength from the needle penetration test was investigated. This is a very easy and practical test method. Point load and needle penetration index (NPI) tests were carried out on coal specimens from Çayirhan coalfield in Turkey. The point load indexes were converted to the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values by using the general conversion factor. The UCS and NPI values were evaluated using regression analysis. A strong linear relationship was found between the two parameters. The conversion factor for the UCS-NPI ratio is 0.35 for the tested coal samples. It is concluded that the UCS of coal can be predicted from the NPI.IntroductionKnowledge of coal strength is important for the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing and grinding equipment. The management of unpaved mine road networks on large surface mines rarely results in optimal road maintenance strategies and minimised total road-user costs. This is ascribed mostly to the complex and dynamic combination of variable road networks and loading and discharge points. In a dynamic mining environment - typically those mines in which production is managed by a centralised truck dispatch system ? there is no guarantee that a particular road maintenance intervention will contribute significantly to reducing total road-user costs or increasing productivity. Most large surface mines operating ultra-heavy mine trucks rely on an integrated on-board diagnostic data collation, communication and GPS-asset location system as a real-time fleet management tool. By extending this system to incorporate a multi-sensor analytical procedure in which specific truck vital signs are monitored and filtered, a road defect can be recognised and a trigger level set to relay the location of defects on the mine haul road to the centralised truck data management system. Previous work established the feasibility of the multi-sensor approach to road defect recognition on large mine haul trucks, and outlined the defect recognition, analytical and modelling issues and system limitations. This paper presents the development of the analytical procedure used as a basis for evaluating the truck on-board data to establish maintenance priorities amongst a network of mine roads. Following an introduction to the system architecture, the results of system field trials are analysed and the results discussed in the light of defect density and traffic volume as the primary variables in an approach to prioritising road maintenance. The paper concludes that by supplementing the existing mine communication and asset management systems, road maintenance can be managed on a near real-time basis and maintenance equipment dispatched to where most immediate benefit will realised from a maintenance intervention on the network, thereby generating the maximum improvement in service and reduction in cost per ton hauled.

Gone are the days of stock-standard diamond beneficiation and final recovery circuits that could, with minor modifications, be adapted to treat any diamond-bearing ore source. A new era has dawned, offering the opportunity to streamline existing diamond processing operations or develop simpler, more efficient, and economical diamond processing plants, with the focus on more efficient comminution, beneficiation, and final recovery. This change in scene has been brought about by: ? The introduction, rapid development, and maturation of multiple comminution, sorting, and recovery technologies ? The need to adapt to a new standard of project approach post the commodity super-cycle phase, where optimizing existing operations and developing scalable, ?fit for purpose? new mines are fast becoming the norm in diamond processing plants in both primary and alluvial operations ? The quest for energy efficiency and lower labour costs ? More remote and inaccessible reserves (under lakes, tops of mountains etc.). This paper serves to identify some technology advances and demonstrates how these could be considered as replacements for or in combination with conventional technologies to arrive at an optimum techno-economic solution. To name a few applications/technologies: ? Comminution: conventional cone crusher, modified/specialized cone crusher, and the high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR). Although significant advances have been made in recent years, this paper only briefly covers comminution within the beneficiation circuit design ? Waste sorting: NIR (near-infrared) sorting, optical (colour) sorting, XRF (X-ray fluorescence) ? Primary concentration by combining dense media separation (DMS) with either XRT (X-ray transmissive), pulsed X-ray, jigs, or pan plants depending on the application, scale, and economics ? Final recovery of diamonds with either conventional X-ray technology, pulsed X-ray technology, or XRT. From recent studies, it can be concluded that there is no longer a standard solution, but rather the ?right? or appropriate solution. Through combining a sound knowledge of the ore source (ore dressing studies or onmine data gathering) and leveraging off the advances in technologies, one is able, through trade-off studies, to arrive at the ultimate techno-economic configuration, the ?right? solution. Emphasis is placed on maximizing diamond recoveries through appropriate technology selection and minimizing the associated costs in an effort to de-bottleneck or improve efficiencies of existing diamond processing plants, or to arrive at the ideal new diamond process plant design..

The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors which affect the performance of the loading and hauling fleet and also find possible solutions to eliminate these factors, so that the daily tonnages required could be produced .This is due to the high demand of manganese required by clients. The investigation strongly focuses on the performances of the three 777D Caterpillar trucks and the R984 C Liebherr Litronic Hydraulic Excavator. In the content of the study, these machines are used to remove and move the low grade manganese (also known as the top cut overburden) in order to expose the high grade manganese from north pit to dump 4. The objectives of the project were to determine the actual performance of the loading and hauling fleet per shift, compare the actual and the theoretical performance and identify areas that need to be improved. To achieve the goals set for the project, a number of activities were carried out. ?Perform a time study to compare the performance of the loading and hauling fleet with the manufacturer specifications ?Match the equipments analysis for Loading and hauling ?Road conditions analysis ?Rolling resistance and Road Gradients analysis ?Operating cost analysis.

Finsch Diamond Mine, part of De Beers Consolidated Mines (DBCM), is situated between Kimberley and Postmasburg in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The kimberlite pipe was discovered in 1960 and De Beers assumed full mining rights three years later. Production commenced in 1966 from an opencast mine, and the operation moved underground in 1990 by developing and implementing a new mining method of blast hole open stoping. A mechanized block cave was brought into production in 2005. While block caving was not new to DBCM, with productive caves having operated in Kimberley and Cullinan, from the outset, the Finsch caving operation was designed as the most advanced with a semi-automated ground handling system. The extraction level was laid out as a single sided herringbone system due to the very poor ground conditions on the south side of the pipe. These factors combined to create a unique environment, which necessitated a completely new approach to draw control. The required system was developed by a team consisting of DBCM personnel from head office and Finsch, GEMCOM and Sandvik-Tamrock, the equipment manufacturers. It was essential that the system could be run quickly, provide daily updates and issue calls directly to the LHDs. It was also important that the base data were obtained from the resource model, which was to be depleted on a monthly basis, thus forming a close link between mine planning and draw control. A further requirement of the system was that it would form a central database for the extraction operation where all data pertaining to delays and changes in conditions, be they production or ground condition related, could be recorded and analysed. The design brought together empirical rules and tables developed at Cullinan plus concepts from programming developed for the front cave at Koffiefontein so that the new system was based on sound practical experience. These facets were incorporated into PCBC (GEMCOM) and CMS and PCS (Sandvik-Tamrock programmes). The system has now been operational for just under a year and while modifications have had to be made, it has proved itself as a practical and reliable tool with which to manage the draw control at Finsch. The system is unforgiving and has forced the production team to focus on the specified drawpoints. Problems have been encountered but most of these have been related to re-educating a workforce, familiar with a flexible mining method, to the strict discipline required for a modern block cave.

The ability to perform three dimensional imaging at micron-scale resolution of real mineral floc sediments and structures using commercially available Micro X-ray Tomography (XMT) instrumentation can be used for the analysis of aggregates and granules, liberation and dewatering of sediments. This paper presents are view of recent work by the authors relevant to the mining and minerals industries. It covers three main topics: X-ray imaging of agglomerates and multi-component mineralic particles,, permeability of sediments, and dissolution of granules with potential application to heap leaching.

[ ] A multiple-bench slope failure occurred at Letlhakane mine on 14th July 2005. No injuries or damage to equipment was suffered and mining production was not affected. Slope failure was preceded by the precursors of tension crack formation, crack widening and extension as well as slope monitoring targets movement. It was predicted that slope failure was imminent using the Geomos slope monitoring system, though the timing was not certain. The area to be affected by the slope failure was also known before hand as was the slope failure mode. As a result, measures were taken to avoid exposing personnel and mining equipment to the slope failure risk. This paper discusses how the prediction of the slope failure of 14th July 2005 using the Geomos slope monitoring system resulted into avoiding potentially fatal injury, damage to mining equipment and loss of mining production.
