The aim of this paper is the construction of models of systems with ionic and ionic-covalent bonds (molten salts) using experimental diffraction data and the calculation of their structure and thermodynamic and transport properties. Modelling was performed using algorithm BELION, in which the non-coulomb part of interaction potential between ions in the model was determined by the method of iterative simulation which targeted agreement between calculated and experimental partial pair correlation functions (PPCFs). The ionic charges in salts, which can be fractional, were determined by minimization of internal energy. In this paper, the algorithm BELION is applied for chlorides of alkaline-earth metals. Pair potentials, PPCFs, atomization energies, self-diffusion coefficients and electric conductivity are calculated. The charge of alkaline-earth metals was in the range of 2.0-2.1, slightly increasing from Mg to Ba. Partial pair correlation functions and atomization energies of models agree well with experimental data for MgCl2, SrCl2and BaCl2. The Outokumpu steel belt sintering technology is used for manufacturing chromite pellets that are charged into smelting furnace for ferrochromium production. Hot air is blown through the moving bed of raw pellets. Direct temperature and flow measurements are difficult to do in the bed of a real scale belt sintering process. Therefore, a tested and reliable mathematical model would be a valuable help for optimising operational parameters of the process and designing new constructional improvements. The aim of this work is to present a mathematical model that calculates the gas flow and temperature distribution in the bed of pellets and the atmosphere. Computational fluid dynamics program FLUENT is used to calculate the gas flow, composition and temperature of the gas in the sintering bed during processing. Energy equation for the bed, containing the effects of evaporation of water and oxidation of carbon and iron oxide, will be added to the model to obtain the temperature of the pellets. The porous media model used for pressure drop calculations in the bed is shortly discussed. A comparison between CFD-calculations and experiments with a pilot scale batch-sintering reactor are also presented. The final model can be used as an engineering tool when developing the process and the equipment further. Different designs can be easily tested with the model and the effects of the changes to the flow pattern and temperature distribution can be studied.

When it comes to sampling theory, a bad sampler is a bad sampler, no matter what, and a sampler is either bad or good. It also is of critical economic importance to tell and understand the difference, especially in a metallurgical plant. In this paper, the grand principles of Sampling Theory are first recalled, then the most popular types of sample cutters for plants are critically reviewed. It is concluded that the industry has a lot of progresses to make in that direction, although improvements usually pay for themselves very quickly.

"SynopsisOver the last decade in South Africa, there has been a significant increase in the number of mining operations, both open pit and underground, which use independent contractors to carry out mining activities. Often mine owners will choose the contractor option without fully understanding the consequences of undertaking this option. Traditionally, contract mining has come at a cost premium of about 15% to 20% compared to an owner mining scenario. However, due to the large number of junior mining companies entering the mining arena in South Africa contract mining rates have increased, with cost premiums as high as 50% being reported. This paper looks at the merits of owner mining versus contract mining and describes under what conditions it may be favourable to select the one option over the other. In addition, the methodology of entering into contract negotiations with the objective of establishing a fair and sustainable relationship is discussed.IntroductionOver the last decade in South Africa, there has been a significant increase in the number of mining operations, both open pit and underground, which use independent contractors to carry out mining activities. Surface mining, for example, may use contractors to conduct drilling and blasting operations or load and haul operations. Common surface operations such as mineral beneficiation, waste disposal, security, and product transport may also be outsourced to contractors.Many companies have a business model that utilizes contractors for the entire mining cycle, maintaining a small head office to provide direction and control. The difficulty with this option is that often mining companies will choose the contractor option without fully understanding the implications."

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng Met Surface coatings persisting on zircon particles, after being leached in an acidic solution, are believed to be the cause of zircon misplacement during the electrostatic separation of heavy mineral beach sands. Electrostatic separation is employed to separate non-conductive zircon particles from more conductive rutile particles. Surface coatings on zircon particles are believed to render the non-conductive zircon particles more conductive, resulting in the contamination of the more conductive rutile stream with zircon particles. Resistivity measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed to compare the surface characteristics of zircon particles found in the different product streams following electrostatic separation. XPS analysis showed that no significant difference exists in the outermost layer of the zircon particles found in the different streams. SEM analysis showed the existing surface coatings on zircon particles from different product streams to have similar chemical compositions. Resistivity measurements confirmed the results obtained from both the XPS and SEM analysis; no significant differences in the resitivities were observed. From the results obtained it suggests that surface coatings present on zircon particles are unlikely the primary cause of zircon misplacement. Zircon losses can possibly be a result of machine related aspects. Key words: XPS; SEM; resistivity measurements; electrostatic separation; heavy mineral sands.

Mould powders play an important role in the stability of the continuous casting process. The main functions of mould powders are to provide sufficient lubrication and to control the horizontal heat transfer. Because process control of thin slab casting is more stringent, it is generally assumed that mould powder properties become more critical as well. In 2000, the Direct Sheet Plant at Corus IJmuiden (DSP) was commissioned, incorporating a thin slab caster designed for casting speeds up to 6 m/min. During commissioning, several operational problems with mould powders were encountered i.e. insufficient liquid pool depth and the formation of rims/lumps. To investigate the operational mould powder problems, some of the mould powders were characterized using physical and mineralogical methods. The results were linked to operational experiences. It was concluded that for thin slab casting, a stable slag formation is obtained with a proper choice of free carbon and an even distribution of the carbon particles within the granules. The physical properties of mould powders are not as critical as expected when the additional mineralogical requirements are taken into account. A common theme running through recently introduced mining health and safety legislation in many parts of the world is risk assessment. Most recently, risk assessment legislation has been introduced across the mining industry of South Africa and the view that the introduction of risk assessment based legislation provides an ideal opportunity to improve on past health and safety performance is presented. Risk assessment techniques range from highly complex safety system techniques that are used in high technology process industries, to subjective techniques based on simple judgements that are finding use in many other industries. The objective of this paper is to shed some light on risk assessment, not by detailing the risk assessment process but by identifying the crucial elements that need to be considered if risk assessments are to be successful in changing health and safety performance. A case study is presented illustrating the introduction of risk assessment into the Ingwe Coal Corporation, one of South Africa?s largest mining houses, to indicate how the system was developed and how it is being used.

These financial statements are the responsibility of the Institute?s Council. Our responsibility is to report on these financial statements. We have conducted our audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. These standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance that, in all material respects, fair presentation is achieved in the financial statements. The audit included an evaluation of the appropriateness of the accounting policies, an examination, on a test basis, of evidence that supports the amounts and disclosures included in the financial statements, an assessment of the reasonableness of significant estimates, and a consideration of the appropriateness of the overall financial statement presentation. We consider that our auditing procedures were appropriate in the circumstances to enable us to express our opinion presented here. In our opinion these financial statements fairly present the financial position of the Institute at30th June, 1997, and the results of its operations for the year then ended in conformity with generally accepted accounting practice.

Fracturing of rock at low stress levels can be a source of unexpected problems in rock engineering: • the resulting instability can be a safety hazard; • in very brittle rocks it may be associated with violent failure of the rock and strainbursting (rockbursting); • it usually leads to an unexpected requirement for rock support, with time and cost implications; • in rock boring projects, it may result in fracture of the rock ahead of the bored face and in the walls of the bore behind the face. This may lead to cutter head vibration, increased cutter wear and consequently decreased performance and increased costs. Examples of situations in which fracturing of rock at very low stress levels has been observed will be described. This will include details or estimates of the in situ stress magnitudes and the rock strengths involved. Diese beinhalten zudem Details oder Schätzungen bezüglich der Stärke des in situ Stressfeldes, sowie der gegebenen Gesteinsstärken. Die mit diesem Beitrag dokumentierten Ergebnisse formen eine Grundlage zur weiteren Forschung dieses Phenomens.

TICOR South Africa is a new titanium feed stock producer. In the Ticor South Africa plant the ilmenite feed to the smelter plant is roasted to enhance its magnetic properties. This allows for the magnetic separation of chromite from the ilmenite. The magnetization reaction relies on partial oxidation with both under- and over-oxidation causing insufficient magnetization. To subject the roaster plant feed material to the required physical conditions a circulating fluid bed (CFB) roaster is used. This paper describes the development of a laboratory model that will aid in the control of the CFB roaster.

There has been disappointingly little development in the analysis of rock slopes in open pit mines over the past 30 years. A brief review of literature shows that the application of numerical stress analysis methods to open pit mine slope stability has become only relatively common in recent times, and that there are as yet no standardized approaches. The lack of development in general, and of robust, standardized approaches in particular, is surprising in view of the ?ultra? deep open pit mines that are being developed to depths in excess of 1000 m. In this paper, the results of a substantial programme of two dimensional and axisymmetric analyses of open pit slopes are described. Variations in the following parameters were taken into account in this programme: slope angle, slope height and horizontal to vertical in situ stress ratio. The evaluation of the data has concentrated on the tensile stresses and the extension strains in the slopes. This is believed to be the first publication dealing with strain distributions in slopes. The occurrence of zones of tensile stress was very limited. These zones occur in the crests of slopes, except in the case of low horizontal to vertical stress ratios, in which case the tensile zone is in the floor of the pit. In contrast, very large zones of extension strain can occur, and this finding represents a significant new aspect in slope stability that has not been considered before. The greatest magnitudes of extension strain occur near the toe of the slope, either in the slope itself, or in the floor of the pit. The magnitudes of the strains are considered to be large enough to result in fracturing of intact rock, and the fracture orientations predicted are adverse for slope stability. The large zone in which such extension failure could potentially occur in a 1200 m deep pit is typically more than 100 m horizontally behind the toe and about 400 m up the face from the toe. Fracturing that is extension in nature is common in competent, brittle rocks and often develops with some violence and little or no warning. Such ?strain bursting? produces easily measurable seismicity, events often being audible as well. In the slope situation, the expected physical manifestation of this behaviour would be popping off of rock slabs and plates of rock from slope surfaces and popping up of the pit floor, as well as the formation of new fractures within the rock mass. Such behaviour may cause overall slope failure, or may initiate failure, which may then be driven to overall slope failure by other influencing factors or combinations of factors. In addition to instability resulting from the fracture surfaces themselves, all induced fracture surfaces could interact with natural geological structures to facilitate formation of a significant failure surface. With suitably orientated joints, extension strains are likely to manifest themselves in the opening up of such joints and hence in the loosening of the rock mass in a preferential orientation, with potential effects on groundwater flow patterns.

Skorpion Zinc operates a solvent extraction/electrowinning zinc plant producing over 150 000 t/a of special high grade (SHG) zinc (>99.995% Zn). In the current flow sheet copper and cadmium are cemented from the neutral leach solution using zinc powder, to prevent galvanic corrosion of plant equipment and build-up of copper in plant solutions. This process is effective but unfortunately consumes expensive zinc dust and produces a low value copper product. The EMEW® (Electrometals electrowinning) technology of Electrometals Technologies Ltd. uses a rapid flow of electrolyte through a cylindrical cell to deposit copper or other metals from dilute solution (less than 1 g/L) [1]. The copper can be deposited as powder or may be harvested as a tubular cathode product. The advantage of the use of EMEW® technology at Skorpion Zinc will be to eliminate the use of expensive zinc dust and to produce a high value copper product for sale. Following extensive bench test work, a piloting campaign was carried out at Skorpion Zinc. The tests demonstrated the ability of the EMEW® cell to effectively remove copper from solution through direct electrowinning at lower operating cost than cementation. A magnetic anisotropy sensor is used for nondestructive measurement of stress on surfaces of a ferromagnetic material, such as steel. The sensor is built on the principle of the magneto-strictive effect in which changes in magnetic permeability due to deformation of the material is measured in a nondestructive manner, which then can be translated into the absolute values of stresses existing on the surface. This technique was applied to measure stresses of H-beams used in tunnels. The results show that this method could be one of the promising technologies for non-destructive stress measurement for safe construction of underground structures. Une sonde magnétique anisotropique est utilisée pour des mesures non-destructives de stress sur la surface d' unmétal ferromagnétique, comme l'acier. La sonde est construite sur le principe de l'effet magnéto-strictif dans lequel les changements dans la perméabilité magnétique due à la déformation du metal est mesurée avec une manière non-destructive, qui peut être alors traduite en valeurs absolues des stress existants à la surface. Cette technique a été appliquée pour la mesure de stress des poutres en H utilisées dans les tunnels. Les résultats montrent que cette méthode peut être l'une des technologies promet tantes concernant les mesures non-destructives de stress pour des constructions sûres de strcutures souterraines. Ein magnetischer Anisotropie-Sensor wird für die zerstörungsfreie Messung von Spannungen an Oberflächenvon ferromagnetischen Materialien wie z.B. Stahl verwendet. Der Sensor kann Änderungen in der magnetischen Durchlässigkeit auf Grund von Verformungen des Materials erkennen, die dann in Absolutwerte der Spannungen an der Oberfläche umgerechnet werden können. Die Methode wurde auf Messung von Spannungenvon H-Balken in Tunnels angewendet. Ergebnisse zeigen, dass dies eine vielversprechende Methode für diezerstörungefreie Messung im Tiefbau ist.

The development of the modern State and the growth of capitalism involves a complex process of interaction between cross-cutting structural dimension: first between politics and economics and, second, between market and hierarchy. Central to such developments are political economies of scale. Mineral specialization in the Third World developed within the framework of an international extension on oligopolistic structure of the advanced capitalist economies of Western Europe and North America. Up to the late 1960s, the world mineral and metallurgical industry was closely controlled by a handful of Western mining and industrial groups. To the extent that, foreign control of the mining sector was seen in the Third World producing countries both as the essence of foreign domination and as its major symbol. In some newly industrializing countries, the State took a more direct role in tying the economy and society together. Central to this process was the growth of large-scale finance capital. From early 1959to the mid-1970s, metal consumption in industrial countries expanded well beyond their domestic mineral endowments. And a free access to Third World minerals was a major element of the economic dynamism of these countries throughout that period. With the change in the characteristics of international investment, Africa has become less important as an outlet for capital exports of European countries. Actually, the African continent now receives only a very minor share of direct foreign investments of Western enterprises. International political economy is concerned first of all with the relationship between the economic and political domains across territorial boundaries. Second, attention should be drawn to the role of the State as the focus of decision-making in a system of competitive States, that is in turn, interdependent with a trans-national market economy in which mining and metallurgy are essential activities that affect the politics of the State, and how this in turn, rebounds on the politics of the international system. Understanding the role of the State must go beyond the glib pronouncements on the ?national interest?. How, and whose interest, the ?national interest? is determined, is precisely the problem. This implies a third theoretical problem that must be addressed: the linkage between the domestic and international domains (or levels of analysis), given that political-economic processes clearly cut across the lines of political decision-making constituted by the institutional structures of the State. Situating the State and economic interests within this vast ?state-society? complex that we call the global order will be a crucial problem for any theoretical approach that involves mining and metallurgy.

The typical reactions which the reductants undergo during ferroalloy production are reviewed, and identified as reaction with CO2 and with SiO, and dissolution in metal. Available reactivity tests for these three reactions are reviewed. It is proposed that it is worthwhile considering dissolution kinetics as a reactivity parameter. Greater crystallinity of the reductant decreases CO2 and SiO reactivity, but increases dissolution rates.

Reagents are added to the flotation process of Merensky Reef ores to achieve specific functions that enable the separation of valuable minerals from gangue minerals on the basis of the difference in their surface properties. However, due to the complexity of the process, the various interactions that occur as well as the incomplete liberation of the ore and range of minerals present, it is difficult to quantify the behaviour of each of the reagents. More specifically, changes made to achieve a particular outcome may have secondary effects that can override the desired effect. If all the effects and interactions can be accounted for, it is possible to manipulate reagent suites and obtain better overall metallurgical performance. This paper discusses the effect of the addition of copper sulphate at different operating points of the recovery of the sulphide minerals. Batch flotation tests indicated that the recovery of chalcopyrite was not affected when operating conditions were varied, whereas pentlandite recovery was strongly affected by the point of reagent addition, and pyrrhotite recovery was enhanced by copper sulphate addition, irrespective of the point of addition, with the extent being dependent on the ore source. Floatable gangue was activated by copper sulphate in the presence of the dithiophosphate collector. Froth stability was also affected by copper sulphate addition.

It is an honour to be invited as a speaker to this ICCR conference and a pleasure to be with you here in South Africa. I have been asked to talk about the competitiveness of coal versus other energy alternatives. Coal supplies nearly one-quarter of the global primary energy. Its most direct competitors are gas, nuclear and renewables. Oil is predominantly for transport fuels. Fuel oil is competitive with coal when crude is below its long-run average price and has some niche opportunities. But I will confine my comments to nuclear, renewables and particularly natural gas as the most potent current competitive threat to coal. Competitiveness is more than just cost and price; there is environmental acceptability, security or reliability and increasingly image. These factors are more of a spectrum than discrete issues. Dollars and cents remain the key issue for competitiveness but one must recognize the impact of politics in sustainable development and energy security.

The practice of manganese ferroalloy smelting has traditionally been based on utilising oxide ores which typically contain a high level of manganese. This preference for oxides has even been extended to the modification of natural carbonates into nodulized oxides. However smelting practices developed over the past 30 years have created a market for natural manganese carbonate ores, driven in part by the unique properties that this type of ore can offer. An understanding of the mineralogy of carbonate ore and its thermal properties has provided important information which enables furnace operators to take full advantage of the chemical differences. However changes to traditional operating practices have been necessary. Once furnace operations using natural and unmodified carbonate ore have been mastered, the unique chemical features of manganese carbonate ore are able to contribute, not only to new product development, but also to cost savings. The use of natural manganese carbonate ore is now a well-established aspect of the industry. The sustained increase in demand for carbonate ore worldwide over the past several years confirms acceptance of its quality. There are effectively few limits to its successful use.
