A self-sealing brattice intended for use during coal mine rescue and recovery operations has been designed and tested by the Bureau of Mines. The major design difference between self-sealing and conventional brattice is that the fabric is cut and sewn BS a hemisphere instead of as a flat sheet. This new type of brattice offers reduced weight, leakage, and installation time. Preliminary testing indicates that the concept is worthwhile, but that further developmental research is required.

Of the 19 major mine fire events (including thermal events) that have occurred in the last 6 years (2000-2005), it is estimated that remotely constructed mine seals could have been used at 65% of the events to control or suppress the fire. Underground observations of seals that have been remotely installed during mine fire events show that they often do not fully achieve mine roof-to-floor and rib-to-rib closure. Unfortunately, the inability to reliably close the mine void has limited or precluded the regular use of this technology. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is conducting full-scale underground experiments at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to identify and remedy existing remote sealing technology shortcomings, to develop novel technologies, and to transfer the new or improved technologies to the mining industry. This paper will discuss the remote mine seal testing program and will provide the results of the in-mine experiments. Water spray characteristics, including droplet size and velocity, airborne dust capture potential, and induced airflow quantity for various spray nozzle designs were evaluated to provide basic information for improving spray applications. Water droplet size and velocity characteristics were initially measured by a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, and air atomized spray nozzles at similar operating parameters. Airflow inducement and dust capture experiments were also conducted under the same operating parameters to examine any salient features of the spray nozzle type, droplet characteristics, induced airflow, and airborne dust capture. Test results indicate that there are trade offs between airflow inducement and dust capture efficiency. A spray nozzle with a wider discharge angle was observed to induce more airflow, but at reduced dust capture efficiencies. Increasing spray nozzle fluid pressure(s) generally reduced water droplet sizes with concurrent increases in droplet velocity, airflow inducement, and airborne dust capture. Placing a three-sided barrier around the spray nozzles normally reduced spray air induction and increased dust capture efficiency. A direct relationship between airborne dust capture efficiency and spray input power normalized per unit of airflow induced was ob- served. This information can be utilized to improve the performance of water sprays for reducing airborne dust levels.

Recent work on beneficiation of the .Alabama red iron ores and ferruginous sandstones has brought out interesting new facts on particle-size reduction that axe a valuable supplement to what is already known.4/ The work was done by the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with-the University of Alabama, University, Ala., on two samples from the Birmingham district. One was an oolitic red iron ore containing about 35 percent iron; the other was a ferruginous sandstone containing about 25 percent iron, particularly attractive because of its low phosphorus content. In both samples rounded quartz (sand) grains were embedded in an oolitic, "onion skin" matrix of hematite. The hematite carries varying amounts of clay, which limits the grade of concentrate that can be made. The clayey hematite is soft, so that the rock crumbles readily under pressure. The sand grains shell out like corn,, and without much exaggeration the mill used for differential grinding might be called a "sheller,"

This study, of the liquidus temperatures and densities of molten alloys of zinc and aluminum was made as part of a broader investigation on refining of scrap aluminum. One of the methods of refining involves the separation of liquid and solid phases by gravity segregation and by filtration. More accurate data were required on the liquidus temperatures and the densities of molten' mixtures of the metals than were available in the technical literature. New data on the liquidus curve were obtained by thermal analysis. The new temperatures are, for the most part) somewhat higher than those reported previously by other investigators. The density of molten mixtures of zinc and aluminum were found to be less than would be calculated by assuming that the two metals occupy the same respective molal volumes in solution as they do as pure metals.

Many different types of structures and materials have been used to build mineral processing facilities over the past few decades. Although the structure type and building material were not viewed as significant factors affecting the health of employees in these facilities when they were built, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health performed an evaluation to determine to what extent building types could impact respirable dust and noise levels. This report discusses the evaluation of three different types of product sizing silica sand structures: a masonry design, a steel-sided design, and an open structure design. The data obtained in this study indicate that the open structure design (no walls) was superior from both a dust and noise (health) standpoint compared to the other two structures. The open structure design should also be beneficial from a cost standpoint because of lower material and construction costs. Companies and design engineers should consider this open design when building new mineral processing facilities in climates where it could be applicable. Some companies may also want to consider modifying existing structures with a more open design to further reduce dust and noise levels. As the trend continues in lowering allowable dust levels for federal health standards in the U.S. mining industry, the open structure design may be an approach for some companies to consider for their operations.

In recent years the issue of human stress response in emergency workers has begun to receive attention. This paper presents a rationale for considering human stress as a significant factor in the management of emergencies It discusses the concept of stress, Critical Incident Stress in emergency responders, and intro¬duces the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) process. It is suggested that in a disaster, the CISD process can improve the effectiveness of response teams on site, their turnaround time on site, and post disaster time off the job. This paper, prepared by a US Bureau of Mines research psychologist, offers some ideas to the mining industry in general, mine rescue trainers and more universally, to those responsible for developing emergency management plans.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the hydraulic stimulation of a gob-degasification borehole to determine if this procedure would aid in degasifying a longwall panel. The stimulated borehole did not degasify the longwall panel as expected either before or after mining of the panel started. It reduced the underground methane emission only 11 pct, considerably less than the reductions effected by two unstimulated boreholes in the same panel. Some probable reasons for the reduced methane flow from the hydraulically stimulated borehole are very low reservoir gas pressure, location of hydraulically stimulated zones within the grouted casing, a casing break caused by lateral shifting, possible vertical movement of rock strata during caving, grouting of a 4-inch pipe blocking three stimulated zones, plasticity of shales, and possible hole damage by swelling of water-sensitive minerals. The borehole was also located between two second-mined areas, which may have allowed partial degasification of the overburden and the coalbed in advance of mining. Finally, a period of 3 months is probably not long enough for the borehole to degasify the overburden before mining.

The temperature entropy (T, S) chart? of thermodynamic properties of nitrogen herewith presented is a complete (1949) revision and a considerable extension of similar charts prepared by the author for use of the helium section of the Bureau of Mines about 25 years previously on the basis of inadequate data then obtaining. During the interval since that early effort, much experimentally determined information on nitrogen properties and behavior has been published, which now permits a more nearly accurate layout and more extensive charting of these relations.

High-speed movies were taken of crater experiments in two-dimensional plates of Tennessee marble to study craters being formed primarily by stress-wave action. The contribution of gas action to the cratering process was minimized because the two-dimensional models did not contain the expanding gases from the explosive. Four burdens were studied for solid plates and one burden for a segmented plate. After cratering, the plates were reassembled for dye penetrant studies of fracturing. Flyrock velocities were calculated and related to the degree of fracturing, and compared with those from quarry shots. In general, the smallest burdens produced the highest flyrock velocities and the least amount of fracturing. Flyrock velocities compared favorably with initial flyrock velocities in quarry blasts, but did not show step accelerations due to gas effects as did the quarry blasts. The test with a segmented plate was used to simulate cratering in a jointed material and showed that stress-wave effects can be important for crater formation in jointed rocks.

Approach A heat activated stench/tracer gas system was developed which automatically releases the gas mixture into the mine ventilation air. How It Works A canister approximately 12 inches long and 3 inches in diameter is charged with 50 grams of ethyl mercaptan or other appropriate stench gas and 500 grams of instrument detectable Freon. The canister is then pressurized to 100 psi with nitrogen. A disc is used to seal the contents of the canister. A low-temperature alloy designed to melt at a predetermined temperature is used to restrain a spring loaded plunger. Upon exposure to heat, the alloy melts and the plunger is released. Lower the respirable dust exposure of longwall shearer operators with improved water spray systems on the shearer. Approach Orient sprays (rather than relocate them) so that dust is held against the face. How It Works Research by the Bureau has indicated that shearer operator dust levels depend largely on how fast dust from the upwind drum spreads into the walkway. Water sprays on the shearer body can greatly affect the spreading of this dust because each spray moves air like a small fan, generating strong cross-currents of air around the shearer. Poorly designed spray systems, especially those with nozzles pointing upwind, will stir up much more dust than they sup-press. On the other hand, Improved systems may be designed to hold the dust cloud against the face while also suppressing It. In such arrangements the water is sprayed downwind and used with screens made from conveyor belting.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an interactive computer program which enables the user to identify the effect of cutting system changes on relative dust generation and forces for continuous miner drums. The program simultaneously evaluates machine and coal seam parameters, and those parameters which the user can control. One or more of these parameters may be changed to determine their individual or collective effect on relative dust generation and cutting forces. The program is written in the BASIC programming language. A complete program listing is included along with user instructions and sample outputs.

Physical variables, a principal factor in the economies of mineral production, affect both capital and direct operating costs. By using a revenue-cost system for the framework, the analyses of revenue and cost categories demonstrate the relative importance of groups of physical variables, whether explicitly defined or not, to a lead-zinc mining operation. Physical variables affecting the producer represent about 60 percent of the total system influence as expressed by cost ranking. Other physical variables affect the remaining costs as controlled by the smelter, the transporter, and the landowner. Such resource conservation aspects as mineral losses due to mining method and mineral processing constitute a portion of the total revenue effects of physical variables. The physical variable revenue-cost system presented in this report offers a framework for cost-benefit analysis of mineral related research.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds of Beaver and Lawrence Counties, Pa. Washability analyses were made on seven coalbed samples, none of which were of metallurgical quality as received. Five of the samples could be sufficiently upgraded to produce acceptable products, and the remaining two samples could not be upgraded to metallurgical quality because their sulfur contents could not be lowered to meet the standard. For steam or power generation, one sample was of low sulfur content as received, one sample could be upgraded to low sulfur content, and three samples could be upgraded to medium sulfur content. The original sulfur content of the remaining two samples can be appreciably reduced by removal of the sink 1.58 speci fic gravity material; however, these coals would be classified as medium sulfur coals both before and after removal of the sink material.

The Bahamas Oil Refining Co. (BORCO) refinery in Freeport continued to operate at less than half its full 500,000-barrel-per-day capacity. Although owned through subsidiaries by the Carey Energy Corp (65%) and Standard Oil Co. of California (35%), BORCO is ineligible for participation in the Crude Oil Entitlements Program granted to companies operating within the United States proper or its territories. Like some other Caribbean refineries, BORCO has suffered a loss of normal market outlet due to the wt advantage afforded U.S. refineries by the Entitlements Program. Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Libya are the major suppliers of crude for the refinery. Its principal products, motor spirits, aviation fuel, distillate fuels, and residual fuel oils, were marketed in the United States and Puerto Rim. The Government-owned Bahamas Development Corp. and Burmah Oil Co. Ltd., held discussions pertaining to a renegotiation of Burmah Oil's management contract for the Grand Bahama Oil Transshipment terminal. The desired contract modifications were not made public but financial problems have plagued the terminal and its operation since construction started in 1972.

Numerous investigators have studied the addition of inert4 substances to coking blends. Generally, the results have yielded trends applicable only to the particular coals and inerts studied. Recently, somewhat more general results were obtained for cokes produced from blends containing added inerts, using the sole-heated oven. The present investigation represents an extension of this work to include a wider range of inerts and to determine the applicability of the various conclusions to cokes produced with the Tuscaloosa oven. The results indicated that an increase in dry-coal charge density of 1 pound per cubic foot (p.c.f.) caused a corresponding change in the hardness (1/4-inch tumbler index) of Tuscaloosa oven cokes of 0.9 percentage points. This value compares favorably with the value of 0.7 determined previously for the sole-heated oven and Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) retort.
