This paper is the first of a series that is to appear on smelting in the lead blast furnace. The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace by direct experimentation, and to correlate the behavior of the furnace at various times with the main factors governing the operation of the blast furnace, and metallurgical losses. Over and above the technical support arid consulting work described in the preceding Parts of this Volume, ADL staff also provided a wide range of additional technical assistance to the Bureau on an ad hoc basis over the course of the contract, and particularly in 1973. Some of these assignments were on tasks that temporarily assumed a high priority at PMSRC, requiring a fast response, while others were more suited to conventional schedules but on communication and location topics less directly related to those in the preceding Parts. Chapter I briefly describes some of the diverse short-term assignments while Chapters I1through V treat assignments on the other topics. I SHORT-TEXM ASSIGNMENTS A sampling of short-term, fast-response assignments undertaken on mine communications and miner location for PMSRC during 1973 are given below. These assignments included technical reviews, discussions and recommendations related to the theory, experimental data, designs, and hardware implementation of experimental CW and pulse miner location EM transmitters; preparation of technical performance specifications for a miniaturized preproduction prototype CW electromagnetic location transmitter; review of specifications for a seismic signal detection experimental study; participation in technical discussions and experiments with PMSRC and equipment suppliers regarding the UHF radio/radiax-cable communications installation in the Bruceton mine; participation in an informal conference to discuss mine communication and monitoring needs and preferences with representatives of the Bureau, mine operators, and equipment manufacturers; participation in technical discussions with representatives of a U.S. mine operator and CERCHAR* concerning the characterization of faults on trolley lines and means of improving their rapid detection;** recommendation of simple signal, noise, and ground fault measurements on mine phone lines; review of an inexpensive automatic telephone dialer; preliminary discussions regarding the feasibility of adapting and assembling a collection of available telephone industry carrier equipment for installation and test in an operating coal mine; evaluation of a proposed call alert mine paging system; review of hardware designs and future experiments for a mine communication sled; design critique of a proposed six-channel narrow-band FM voice modem for carrier communication on the mine phone line; preparation of technical performance

The problem of signaling to the hoisting engineer from the cage in a shaft mine has been given considerable thought and attention by engineers and mine operators seeking to Increase the safety and efficiency of hoisting. HISTORY R. L. Rutherford,3/ an employee of the Magma Copper Co., Superior Ariz., realizing the need for a simple and practical moving-cage signaling system, began a serious of experiments early in 1937, Available electrical moving-cage signal in operation at this date required that signal wires be installed in the shaft to make a simple, positive signal without wires, the first experiments used the pipe lines in the shaft for carrying the signal current, but these experiments were not successful.

Natural gas was the only economically significant mineral produced. A significant amount of the gas output was consumed in the production of nitrogen fertilizer and electric power. Proved reserves of natural gas were abundant and at least sufficient to supply most of the country's industrial and domestic needs for many decades to come. Other mineral production was of little importance to the Bangladesh economy, although there were prospects for developing some of the nonmetallic minerals. The flat river-delta terrain comprising nearly all of Bangladesh made the potential for discovering major, economically exploitable mineral deposits poor. The deep sediments, however, have good potential for crude oil or additional natural gas discoveries.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the washability characteristics of 14 coalbed samples collected in Wyoming. Such data is needed to evaluate the quality of the coals of the West where most of our low-sulfur-content coal reserves are found. Of the 14 samples included in this report 13 had a total sulfur content of 1.1 percent or less. All of the samples contained low per¬centages of ash or could be readily washed to a desirable ash level with minimal loss of yield. The coals ranged in rank from high-volatile B bituminous to subbituminous C, although 10 of the samples were high-volatile C bituminous. The coalbeds varied in thickness from 4.5 to an unknown thickness greater than 67.5 feet.

This user's guide covers the operation of a suite of three computer programs-Bplane, Bstepp, and Bwedge. These programs can be used to evaluate the potential for plane shear, step-path, and wedge failures along the crest of a slope bench. Such failures reduce the width of a catch bench and may compromise the bench's ability to catch rolling or sliding material before it reaches miners working below. The Bplane and Bwedge programs address sliding of blocks defined by continuous planar joints. The Bstepp program examines sliding of blocks defined by more complex failure surfaces that include steeply dipping cross joints and may even include breaks across small bridges of intact rock. The programs are applicable to jointed rock masses where the joints are small relative to the overall slope and form a number of sets with uniform statistical characteristics within a slope sector. The theoretical basis, application, and operation of these programs are described.

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary reports by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ and by the Federal Geological Survey 4/ suggested that exploration would discover substantial reserves of minable ore in the Contact mine, Grant County, New Mexico. During February and March 1943, a sampling program was conducted on this property under the direction of the author. This was art of a general survey of the manganese districts of southwestern New Mexico.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as practicable soon as after its conclusion. The Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocer, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. S. Dean, assistant director. With respect to this report, special acknowledgment is due to C. H. Johnson, district engineer for New Mexico, and E. D. Gardner, regional engineer, and his staff, of the Central Region of the Bureau of Mines at the time of this work in 1943; also to Kenworthy, metallurgist at the Rolla. Gas drainage through surface bore¬holes has been the conventional means of methane control for U.S. longwall gobs. However, these vertical boreholes are becoming so costly, and the surface rights so difficult to obtain, that the Bureau of Mines is developing underground gob gas drainage as an alternate means of methane control for U.S. longwal..ls. Holes are drilled into the roof over the panel and on retreating longwalls, towards the working face from a location inby the face. As the longwall retreats, an increasing portion of the hole inter¬cepts the fracture system over the caved gob. A surface exhauster maintains a vacuum on a pipeline parelleling the panel and draws the methane mixture out of the mine. Auxiliary systems of gob gas drain¬age during longwall mining will be essen¬tial for an increasing number of coal mines. Deep and gassy mines often find ventilation insufficient for adequate dilution of methane in bleeder entries. Although this cross-measure method of degasification has been used successfully in Europe, some of the European tech¬niques cannot be directly applied to U.S. mines. This is the first study of its kind in this country.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), in collaboration with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the mining industry, and seal manufacturers recently conducted a series of full-scale experiments within the underground experimental mine at PRL’s Lake Lynn Laboratory. The purpose of the experiments was toe valuate the explosion-resistant characteristics of several new seal designs for rapid deployment during mine emergencies. These seals can be deployed in 6 to 10 hr and are capable of with standing explosion overpressures in excess of 140 kPa (20 psi). These novel seal designs use available mine materials, do not require conventional rib hitching, and, most importantly, can substantially reduce exposure time for coal miners during sealing and mine recovery operations.

In the course of the work currently conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute Research Project 48 on identifying sulfur compounds in petroleum, a micromethod was developed (12)5 for catalytically removing the sulfur atom from sulfur compounds. The product is the residual portion of the molecule; the structure otherwise was unaltered except for hydrogenation of any unsaturated bonds that were present in the original compound. Positive identification of sulfur compounds isolated from crude oils is a difficult problem. Direct comparison of properties of the unknown with those of reference compounds is often impossible because of the limited number of reference sulfur compounds available. However, a relatively large number of pure hydrocarbons is available, and the conversion of the sulfur compound to a hydrocarbon enhances the possibility of identification. The technique also can be used to prepare microquantities of scarce hydrocarbons by hydrogenating compounds that are readily available.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of anthracite from the Mammoth and Holmes veins in Schuylkill County, Pa., as determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines laboratory separations at specific gravities of 1.50 to 1.90. The Holmes vein anthracite contains approximately 13 percent ash, and the Mammoth vein contains about 9 percent as fed to the breaker. Crushing Broken, Egg, and Stove sizes from each vein produces Pea-size anthracite of lower ash content than that contained in Buckwheat No.1 size and smaller. The Buck-wheat No.5 size has the highest ash content of all the sizes examined. Potential recovery from a mixture of the two veins as received at the breaker, separated at 1.90 specific gravity, is approximately 64 percent of the feed at 11.0 percent ash. The same materials separated at 1.80 specific gravity yield about 61 percent with an ash content of 10.1 percent. All rejects are from the Holmes vein, because the entire Mammoth material is less than 10.0 percent ash.

Through the circulation of these reports, it is hoped that sufficient interest may develop among lime-plant operators to prompt them to discuss with the bureau their our experiences with these problems. By such an interchange of ideas, it is believed that conclusion may be reached which will be of practical benefit to try entire industry. "INTRODUCTION The increased use of coal as pulverized fuel has focused attention on the grindability of coal and on the necessity of evaluating this property by a method suitable for use in the usual coal-testing laboratory. Without some knowledge of how various coals behave in the grinding operation, that is, how their use affects mill capacity and power requirements, the selection of coals for pulverized-fuel plants cannot be made on the same critical basis used in selecting coals for other types of burning equipment. The grindability of a coal, serves principally as an indication of the mill capacity attainable in grinding it - not as a direct index of the total cost of grinding. Although the grindability of coal may play a minor role at some plants, it is a decidedly important factor where pulverizer capacity limits the ability to carry high loads.Purpose Standardized tests for determining the grindability of coal are relatively new, so that the information now available on the grindability of various coals is limited in comparison, for example, with that available on proximate analyses. Published information is restricted to determinations on many important Eastern coals by the Fuel Engineering Co. of New York, 4/ a bulletin giving the results of numerous tests by the Babcock and Wilcox Co. 5/, and a comprehensive report on. Alabama coals by the Bureau of Mines. 6/This report presents the results of grindability tests of 34 samples of coals from Illinois, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and British Columbia at the Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Seattle, Wash., in cooperation with the College of Mines of the University of Washington. In the future, as the laboratories of the Bureau make grindalility tests of other coals, additional reports will be issued."

A small-scale method was developed for determining the free-swelling index of coal samples of limited quantity, especially the macerals. Results of a series of tests using a 0.3-gram sample correlated well with those by the standard method using a 1-gram sample. The standard and small-scale methods are modified to give unrestricted swelling for those coals having swelling index numbers above 7.

Loss of life, loss of sight, crippling injuries, and property damage nearly always result from accidents involving explosives. The severity of such accidents has prompted lawmaking bodies to pass laws concerning the transportation, handling, and use of explosives; manufacturers of explosives publish manuals 'describing explosives and practical methods of handling then; and mining companies and others who use large quantities of explosives publish rules based on actual experience for the guidance of their employees. Careless storage of explosives by thoughtless or incompetent persons, particularly if they are left where children or saboteurs have access 'to them, has led to many serious accidents. Many contractors and mining operators who use explosives are extremely careless about storing them. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the explosive-handling practices of a large western mining company, which are considered better than most.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated a method of using inert gas to prevent the formation of explosive gas mixtures in auger highwall mining of coal. A combination of gasoline and diesel engine exhaust gases was introduced into the auger drill hole using a short section of pipe located at the collar. Gas samples were taken and analyzed on-site with infrared detectors for oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane, and carbon monoxide. Evacuated bottle samples were also taken and analyzed by gas chromatography in the laboratory. These gas results were analyzed for explosibility. Coal samples from various depths were used to obtain the gas content of the coal using the modified direct method. Personal expo- sure to carbon monoxide was also monitored. The highest methane level observed was 9.55%. The levels of inert gas (carbon dioxide and nitrogen) were sufficiently high to prevent any ignition of the methane. Results showed that for all conditions during mining, gas concentrations were nonexplosive. The gas content of the coal was about 0.30 cm3/g. The maximum personal time-weighted average sample for carbon monoxide was 20 ppm. This system provides a safe, inexpensive, simple method for pre- venting explosions during auger mining.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the presence and extent of methane accumulations in mine roof cavities using a full-scale mine model. Methane was released at a constant rate into the roof of a cavity built onto a 700-ft wind tunnel. Two box-shaped roof cavities were used in the study: one had a volume of 114.7 cu ft; and the other had a volume of 57.3 cu ft. Methane concentration was measured at 28 sampling points in the cavities using 21 different combinations of gas emission rates and air velocities. Brattice hung in the cavity helped reduce methane concentrations without auxiliary ventilation. It was also found that the effective ventilation rate increased by a factor of 40 in the large cavity and by a factor of 20 in the small cavity when air velocity was increased from 100 to 600 fpm.

This is the first of a series of reports dealing with development of a method of strengthening bituminous-coal-mine roof. Later reports will describe the progress made with injecting high cohesive and adhesive bonding agents into bedding planes and mine tests of roof strata strengthened by the bonds formed. The concept of strengthening roof strata in coal mines by inserting steel rods in the form of bolts has been widely accepted by the coal industry. The benefits of increased production and safety derived from this type of roof support has more than justified the increased cost of roof bolting. However, not all coal-mine roof structure is amenable to this type of support, and failures occur owing to the heterogeneity and variable character of mine-roof strata.3/
