The question of earth models has repeatedly arisen in our work. An accurate representation of the seismic properties is required for three reasons: 1.To be able to determine from a set of received arrival times, the location of a seismic source in the earth, and secondly the degree of accuracy required in the model used for calculating source location from the set of arrival time differences. 2. To be able to determine the expected arrival times at an array of geophones produced in response to a hypothetical source in the earth. 3. To be able to estimate received signal strengths more accurately. The work reported here on earth models is based on information from sever- al consultants and from others who expressed an interest in the problem and supplied information to us. II. COAL MINE GEOLOGY On one of our earlier assignments for the Bureau of Mines, Earth Science Research Inc. of Cambridge, Massachusetts prepared for us a short description of the lithology to be expected at coal mine sites. This description follows, together with the ranges of compressional seismic velocities (Figure I*) associated with typical materials comprising the layered structure of a coal mine area. Coal is primarily associated with fresh water sediments including sandstones, shales, and clays, and occasionally may be metamorphased to varying degrees. In the Appalachian Basin the coal beds occur within cyclical sequences of non-marine shales, sands tones, conglomerates, limes tones, and clays. The beds range in thickness from a few inches to 60 feet, averaging between 2 feet and 10 feet. They have generally broad areal extent, occasionally up to 5,000 square miles, and have an overall tabular or lens-like shape. Within a particular lens, local changes in thickness are normal.

In the early winter of 1919 the Pittsburgh petroleum laboratory of the Bureau of Mines undertook the work of testing fuel oil samples representing purchases of the United State Shipping Board for ships sailing from the port of New York. fuel oil was, at this time, being bought on a contract which involved specifications issued by the United States Navy under dace of October 2, 1920 (See Bulletin 1, Oil Division, U. S. Fuel Administration.)The object of the Bureau of Mines in undertaking this inspection work was twofold. (1) The Bureau was in position to give, and the Shipping Board needed, reliable laboratory service for checking the quality of the fuel oil purchased, the value of which ran into millions of dollars for,year's supply. (2) It was believed, and later demonstrated, that the existing specifications did not insure the obtaining of a reliably satisfactory quality of oil.The objection to the specifications concerned the employment of a clause limiting the gravity of the oil. The inadequacy of gravity specifications for several types of petroleum products has long been recognized, and there was every reason to reason to believe that they were no more desirable for fuel oil than for gasoline, kerosene, or lubricating oil. A first and obvious objection was the fact that it is somewhat difficult to make accurate gravity tests on ""heavy"" residuum fuel oils. (The Bureau found it necessary to employ or such tests a rather tedious procedure involving the use of a picnometer and an accurate balance, as the simpler methods, employing hydrometer or displacement balance, proved unreliable in a large proportion of cases.) A second and more important objection was that gravity tests, even when accurately made, do not provide a reliable index of the actual quality of the oil.

"This Bureau of Mines report contains a tabulation of methane emissions during 1980 for all coal mines located in the United States with emissions greater than 0.1 MMcfd. Listed for each mine are methane emission quantity, location, and coalbed. The report also compares records of 1975 and 1980 and describes relationships between emissions in 1980 and the Bureau's coalbed gas content data on 11 mines.INTRODUCTIONMethane gas is a threat to safety in underground coal mines. Research by Government and industry has led to great gains in reducing methane gas ignitions and explosions. The development of advanced methane control techniques is necessary for the safe operation of more gassy mines and the implementation of rapid mining techniques.As part of this research, the Bureau of Mines has surveyed total methane emission data from underground bituminous coal mines in the United States and tabulated emissions from mines producing over 0.1 MMcfd of methane. This report is an update of similar studies previously described in Information Circulars 8733, 8659, and 8558 (2-4).3The data from 1980 were compiled from Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) records of air quality-quantity inspections made quarterly at each mine. The inspections involve measuring airflow and collecting air samples in the main returns. From these data, an average methane emission is calculated and used to represent the daily mine emission for each quarter. The methane emissions given in this report are the averages of the four 1980 quarters and do not include mine emissions from other sources such as degasification projects. Since a previous Bureau study showed that emissions from mines emitting less than 0.1 MMcfd represented only 2 pct of all emissions, 0.1 MMcfd was chosen as a lower limit for data collection (4)."

The New York State Department of Transportation recently commenced highway widening and drainage improvement projects in Clarence and Amherst, NY. Drainage improvements including the installation of storm sewer lines required excavation to a depth of 2.5 m (8.2 ft). In September 2002, NYSDOT stopped further blasting when 800 ppm CO was detected in the basement of a house near the blasting site. At the insistence of NYSDOT, the general contractor developed a new blast plan with the assistance of an environmental consultant. The plan provided for the installation of multi-gas monitors in buildings of special concern and/or with basements and residential type CO monitors in all other buildings within 100m (330 ft) of the blast. The multi-gas monitors would be remotely monitored. The plan provided action levels which would ensure public safety. The blast design was also modified to allow for better venting of CO. Blasts were limited to 20 ft lengths. The overburden was to be removed from the rock and blasting mats put in place to prevent flyrock. Approximately twenty feet of trench adjacent to the blast was left open to allow ground movement and gas release. The use of CO monitors was effective to alert occupants of a building to the presence of CO. The most effective appeared to be the residential type CO alarms with digital readouts. They were simple and easy to use and allowed the public to participate in the process. False alarms were repeatedly received with the more sophisticated instrumentation. Residential type CO monitors are preferable to warn people near blast sites. More sophisticated instrumentation should be avoided unless personnel are experienced in its use. A general overview of the blasting and monitoring is presented and discussed. The use and effectiveness of residential type CO monitors and multi-gas monitors are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a rapid analytical method for the determination of anions by ion chromatography (IC) in phosphate rock mining materials and cement kiln dust (CKD). The procedure employs an Na2C03 fusion of the sample, followed by a water extraction that allows direct injection of the sample into an ion chromatograph without separator column poisoning by the transition metal ions. Fluoride (F-) and phosphate (P043-) were determined in 24 phosphate rock processing and waste material samples by the IC method. The results were compared with a pyrohydrolytic distillation-titration method for F-and a colorimetric procedure for P043-. Excellent analytical agreement was obtained for F-and p043-values determined by IC and the comparable wet chemical methods. Fluoride values ranged from 0.3 wt-pct in the filter cake to 3.6 wt-pct in phosphate rock concentrate. Phosphate values ranged from 1.2 wt-pct in the filter cake to 33.8 wt-pct in the rock concentrate. Fluoride, chloride, phosphate, nitrate, and sulfate in several CKD samples were determined by the IC method and standard wet chemical techniques. Excellent agreement was obtained between the two methods for all anions. A total of 113 CKD samples from all areas of the United States was analyzed by the IC method. Fluoride values ranged from <0.01 to 0.36 wt-pct. Chloride values ranged from <0.01 to 12.5 wt-pct. Sulfate values ranged from 0.41 to 31.6 wt-pct. Phosphate and nitrate were detected in only about 25 pct of the samples at >0.02 wt-pct. Maximum phosphate and nitrate values were 1.0 and 1.6 wt-pct, respectively.

"A complete list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1, 1947, was published as Information Circular 7432. 3/The present list is a supplement thereto that includes all of the equipment approved during the calendar year 1947.The items are numbered to indicate the consecutive order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7432 showed six air compressors on the active list; two additional compressors, Nos. 7 and 8 in this category, were approved during 1947.Items 2 and 7, unmounted loader and power unit, respectively, under Loading and Conveying Equipment, item 2, rubber-mounted mining machine and item 8, distribution box, appear in Information Circular 7432. They are repeated to show that approvals of these four equipments were extended to cover an additional voltage rating which requires material change in design.Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy, as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines, devices, and lamps that are available for reducing explosion and other hazards incidental to coal mining. The present paper, with Information Circular 7432, gives the complete list of permissible mine equipment that is available under the various classifications."

Provide a machine for economically drilling probe holes in coal mines (required where there&apos;s a possibility of unmapped, abandoned workings) to check for possible water flood or gas hazards ahead of the face. Approach A lightweight air-powered drill, that mounts on a light-weight frame anchored to the face with an expandable packer, is used to drill one or more probe holes. The anchor installs quickly and will lock the drill in any desired position. How It Works The drill is portable and can be broken down to small components for ease of transportation. One man can carry these sections through restricted access routes to the working place. Components that are separable are the anchor assembly, drill frame assembly, and drill motor assembly. The drilling sequence is as follows: A 2-inch-diameter anchor hole is drilled 2 feet deep. The fixed anchor tube is rubber packer is expanded. A second anchor hole is drilled through a bushing in the anchor frame. The removable anchor tube is inserted and its rubber packer expanded. (This anchoring system withstood pulls of up to 14,000 pounds.) Next, the frame is attached to the anchor with two screw knobs, and the motor is attached to inserted in the hole and the rubber packer is expanded. A second anchor hole is drilled through a bushing in the anchor frame. The removable anchor tube is inserted and its rubber packer expanded. (This anchoring system withstood pulls of up to 14,000 pounds.) Next, the frame is attached to the anchor with two screw knobs, and the motor is attached to the frame with a single locking pin. Installing the anchor and drill takes less than 12 minutes.

(being shipped as bailast in ocean freighters). Within the last 10 years it has become more economical to use local sands, and there has been a general shift from the Belgian sand. Deposits of purer sand were treated and used for 'some time: but the suprly became limited, and means were sought to beneficiate the more bountiful subpay-f impure beach sands. These sands are composed of, 50 percent feldspar and 50 percent quartz, with small amounts of iron- bearing minerals, The most objectionable impurities in these West coast sands are the oxides of iron and aluminum. The Del Monte (Calif.) beach sand contains about 0.13 percent FeqQg and about 11.0 percent Aig03 (the latter being furnished by the large amount of feldspar present.) For the manufacture of feldspar present.) For the manufacture of flint-glass containers the maximuni quantities of these two impurities permitted in the sand are 0.05 percent F20 and 6 to 8 percent A1203.. The Fe0g occurs in the sand as follows: Traces of iron-bearing minerais resistant to weathering, ferruginous clay stains on the sand grains, and iron minerais not visible and possibly in solid solution or as colloidal incisions in the grains of feidspar or quartz. A good part of the iron in the sand is present in the traces of iron-bearing minerals, biotite, ilmenite, garnet, monazite; and hornblende. Biotite is present in larger quantities than the others. Samples of quartz, were freed of iron-bearing minerais by the use of heavy liquid (sp.gr. 2.70), leached with boiling HCI and SnCl2. Under a microscope a few apparently clean quartz grains were selected, and Fe203 was determined spectrographically to be 0.03 percent. Table 8 provides data for the estimated value of world export trade of all mineral commodities from 1980 through 1991. It also provides a breakdown of the total into mineral fuels and non fuel minerals. These data have been developed from UN export trade data presented in table 9. The percent distribution and growth of the value of world export by major commodity groups are presented in tables 9, 10, and 11, respectively. In terms of industrial minerals (nonmetals), data in tables 10 and 11 include crude industrial minerals only, while table 8 includes an estimate for other industrial minerals. The 1991 estimates that appeared in the 1991 issues of this publication have been revised. It is typical for this section to review the year prior to the year of review because of the unavailability of data at the time of publication. The aggregated value of export trade in mineral commodities for 1992 was not available at the time of publication. The total value of nonfuel and fuel mineral exports for 1991 was about $616 billion in current (1991) dollars. The value of mineral fuel export trade accounted for about 53 % of the total mineral export trade. In 1980, the contribution of mineral fuel to the value of mineral commodity export trade had been almost 68%. The 1991 world mineral commodity export trade represents a 5.3% decrease (table 8) from that of 1990. The largest decrease was attributed to the decrease of export trade of fuel minerals (5%). The value of non fuel mineral export trade decreased by 4 %. Because the value export trade of all commodities increased by 1.2 %, the share of mineral commodities decreased from 19.2 % to 17.9 % of the total.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and others have conducted a number of occupational exposure surveys since the publication of the International Agency for Research on Cancer report of 1989(1), which labeled diesel exhaust as a probable human carcinogen. These surveys have assessed diesel exhaust exposure using measurement of diesel aerosol and/or specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as indicators of exposure. This report reviews, available diesel exhaust aerosol and gas measurement techniques. Measurement of human exposure to toxic agents is the first step in determining the exposure-dose-response relationship. It is a fundamental step in risk assessment. Measuring exposure to diesel exhaust pollutants is particularly challenging due to the complexity and variability of exhaust components. This paper reviews current occupational health standards for diesel emissions and available diesel exhaust gas and aerosol measurement techniques. Although surveys in mines have primarily assessed diesel exhaust exposure using diesel particulate matter (DPM) some exhaust gas measurements have been used as indicators of exposure. DPM is emphasized because it is a major component of diesel exhaust, is suspected to make a major contribution to the health hazard, and is measurable. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH STANDARDS Occupational exposure surveys of diesel exhaust frequently measure regulated pollutants, or pollutants that are suspected carcinogens, even if no permissible exposure limits (PELs) have been established. In the United States, various organizations recommend a range of allowable values for diesel exhaust gaseous constituents, including carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO.), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitric oxide (NO), and formaldehyde (HCHO). Table I summarizes these recommended levels, showing 8-hour or 10-hour time-weighted-average values where available; where these are not available, 15-minute short-term [ ]

"A 1986 report by the U.S. National Committee on Blomechanlcs (1) describes lung disease as a major national health problem. The report cites three areas that would benefit from a better understanding of the vibratory patterns of the lung. These areas are outlined below.1. In cases of respiratory distress, pressure driven artificial respirators are used. A new technique using high frequency respiration is quite promising, but the pressure distribution in the lung as a function of frequency is not yet known. At these frequencies of 1 to 60 Hz, the lung expands asynchronously (2) and a better understanding of these expansion nonunlformltles could provide valuable Information about the mechanics of high frequency ventilation.2. Listening to the sounds In the lung can yield valuable Information about the state of the lung. To improve the technique, a better understanding of how acoustic waves propagate through the lung is needed.3. The response of the lung as It Is subjected to acoustic excitation, dynamic loading or shock waves is not well understood. A better knowledge of these responees can lead to improved treatment for patients subjected to either explosive pressure waves or car crashes.4. Researchers are measuring the acoustic Impedance of the Iung to detect early states of dysfunction. Sneckenberger and Whitmoyer (3) have reported Impedances obtained at acoustic frequencies up to about 6000 Hz. However, It la not certain which parts of the lung are responding to the acoustic excitation.To Investigate the vibratory characteristics of the lung, excised rat lungs were excited via the trachea with acoustic waves at frequencies up to 6000 Hz. Thie paper describes an Instrumentation system, utlllzlng time-averaged holographic Interferometry, to detect and quantify the response of the lung surface to the acoustic excitation."

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (sec. 303 (b)) stipulates that no working section of the mine shall contain more than 0.5 percent carbon dioxide and no harmful quantities of other noxious or poisonous gases such as the oxides of nitrogen. The concentration of methane should at all times be maintained below one percent. A split of air returning from any working section shall contain no more than 1.5 percent of methane (sec. 303 (i) (2)) and air that has passed by an opening of any abandoned area shall not be used to ventilate any working place in the coal mine if such air contains more than 0.25 percent of methane (sec. 303 (j)). Methane concentration in the returns from the bleeder entries should not exceed 2.0 percent (sec. 303 (i) (3)), and no air that has passed through an opening which is inaccessible for examination shall be used to ventilate any active areas. While the air quantity requirements alone can easily be met, the governing condition in most mines is the dilution requirements for quality control. A sufficient quantity of air is required to render harmless and carry away noxious and respirable pollutants. In recent years, changes in coal extraction methods, rates of advance, location of available reserves, position of prominent methane sources and horizons, and geological sequences have contributed sig¬nificantly to alterations in rates, patterns and character of numerous methane emissions. Gas production of 10 to 15 million standard cubic feet per day is not uncommon from deep mines (Cervik, 1969). The Geophysical section of the United States Bureau of Mines has received many inquiries regarding the application of geophysical methods to the location of small, buried metallic objects. The object of this paper is fourfold: (1) To sketch as briefly and non- technically as possible the principles underlying the operation of several elec- trical geophysical methods of prospecting applicable to the finding of small, buried metallic objects; (2) to point out the possibilities and limitations of these methods; (3) to present, whenever possible, data showing actual results obtained from their use; and (4) to enumerate and describe methods that lack scientific background or foundation.

Hydraulic backfill consisting of siliceous mill tailings was successfully dewatered and consolidated by electrokinetics in a field test conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the Star mine, Burke, Idaho. A stope at the 2,000-foot level was filled in such a way that slimes and coarse sand were retained in the scope. Following settlement of solids and decant of surface water, direct current applied between buried electrodes created a firm, dense material in approximately 3 hours. This rapid densification of fine-grained material demonstrated the utility of this method and suggests other applications, particularly in the control of slime deposits that cause serious problems in many deep mines.

A portable radon diffusion chamber has been tested with electrical collection of the radon daughter nuclei for enhancement of sensitivity. The detector size was small enough to be worn suspended from the belt. With a battery-supplied high voltage the sensitivity was found to be 1.43 tracks/cm2 per pCi-hr/l of ambient radon at Sot relative humidity. The track densities on the surfaces of the CR-39 plastic nuclear track detectors were found to be non-uniform, making difficult the determination of average densities with high accuracy. The fabrication of electrets for use in the detector was investigated in accordance with published techniques with negative results.

Data are presented to show oil vaporization resulting from the passage of natural gas through a sand-packed tube saturated with synthetic reservoir oils. The Bureau of Mines performed 13 experiments, using reservoir oils synthesized with base crude oils of approximately 22°, 35°, and 45° API, at 100°, 175°, or 250° F and 1,100, 2,600, or 4,100 psia. It has been determined that the amount of vaporization is significant if proper conditions exist. These experiments show that oil vaporization depends on pressure, temperature, volatility of the oil, and amount of gas cycled. Increases in each of these conditions increase the volume of oil vaporized.

The possibility of improving the volatilization of gold through the formation of a metal-gold chloride vapor complex was investigated. Gold-silica mixtures, containing ferrous and nonferrous minerals and salts as additives, were treated in a laboratory tube furnace with a flow of chlorine gas at various temperatures. The addition of pyrite (FeS2) to a charge of gold-silica increased the volatility of the gold from 3, 20, and 62 percent of the total gold to 62, 93, and 100 percent at 200°, 300°, and 400° C, respectively. Chemical analyses of the condensate indicated the volatile species to be FeAuCl6.

This report analyzes mine fires for all U.S. underground and surface coal mining categories by state and2-year time periods during 1990–1999. Risk rate values are derived, and ignition source, methods of fire detection and suppression, and other variables are examined. The data were derived from Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mine fire accident publications and verbal communications with mine personnel. The analysis will provide the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, MSHA, and the mining industry with a better understanding of the causes and hazards associated with mine fires and will form a basis for future fire research programs.

This investigation by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated that building bricks can be produced by the steam-curing process from various types of industrial mineral wastes. Wastes, utilized to produce bricks, consisted of copper mill tailings, roofing granule fines, asbestos fines, and zinc mill tailings. Bonding of the wastes with either Ca(OH)2 or portland cement resulted in building bricks that met ASTM specification C73-67 for grade SW and MW bricks when evaluated in accordance with ASTM designation C67-66 on sampling and testing of brick. An economic evaluation of the process indicates the total operating cost per 1,000 bricks is about $36.

The analyses will provide the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the mining industry with a better understanding of the hazards associated with mobile equipment fires and will create a basis for future fire research programs.
