To determine the copper and nickel content of reported ore occurrences in the Chippewa mine near Rockmont, Douglas County, Wis., the Bureau of Mines reopened and sampled the old shaft and workings during the summer and fall of 1953. Occurrences of native copper near Rockmont and others near Gordon, also in Douglas County, Wis., are in lava flows, which extend from the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan southwest across Wisconsin and into Minnesota. Sporadic attempts have been made to find additional economic copper deposits in these flows since profitable mines were developed in Upper Michigan nearly 100 years ago. The Rockmont and Gordon areas were explored extensively more than 50 years ago. More recently, from August 1944 to duly 1945, an occurrence near Gordon was investigated by the Bureau.2/

The Bureau of Mines developed a stopping design that allows the stopping to be blown down by strong blast forces without incurring any permanent damage. Trials with the new stopping, dubbed the quick-fix blowout stopping, have been conducted in the Bureau's Safety Research Coal Mine at Bruceton, Pa., and in two New Mexico uranium mines. Results have been favorable in all cases. Compared with conventional brattice stoppings or wood bulkheads, the quick-fix blowout stopping is easier and less time consuming to install, is easier to maintain, and in most cases is just as efficient an air barrier. There is same indication that the shape of the stopping makes it more resistant to blast fore s than the fabric stoppings now in use.

The conventional gallery test used by the Bureau of Mines Explosives Testing Station and corresponding establishments in other countries to establish the permissibility of explosives serves principally to differentiate the relatively safe explosive from the positively unsafe one. It has been recognized for many years that a more definitive test is needed to measure the relative incendivity to firedamp of explosives and explosive devices. A new method - the oxygen-value test - for measuring this incendivlty quantitatively has been devised and is being tested at Bruceton, Pa. To date, this testing bas been limited mainly to straight nitroglycerin dynamites. It is planned to study application of the method to permissible explosives in the near future. These results will be reported later. In the present report, permissible explosives will not be considered specifically.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment sound levels and worker noise exposures in the stone/aggregate mining industry. Six stone/aggregate mines (three surface and three underground) were recently surveyed, and the findings (ire presented here. The surveys consisted of sound-level measurements conducted around various equipment and machinery (including stone processing and crushing equipment) and full-shift dose measurements to determine worker noise exposures. The findings identify the equipment and machinery that are likely to cause worker overexposures and identify the workers found to he experiencing overexposures. In addition, the benefit of cabs in reducing mobile equipment operator noise exposure is discussed.

"INTRODUCTION The strategic importance of zinc warranted investigation of the Silver Eagle zinc prospect, which was first examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in January 1943.From October 12, 1943, to March 16, 1944, the Bureau explored the deposit by trenching, core drilling, and sampling to establish the amount and grade of ore and to test for the presence of sulfide-ore minerals at depth.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. The Bureau of Mines has developed a process to utilize waste heat from electric arc steelmaking furnace gases to preheat the ferrous material charged to the furnace. Four heat exchangers were designed, tested, and operated successfully on 1-ton electric arc furnaces. Briquets and pellets were charged continuously, both countercurrent to the hot furnace offgasses and at ambient temperatures. A comparison of the electrical energy consumed in each situation showed that preheating can lower energy requirements as much as 15.6 percent.

"The diesel particulate matter (DPM), a constituent of the diesel engine exhausts, is known to be a potential carcinogen. 1- 3 Consequently, suitable methods to control/eliminate DPM have ·been under investigation in recent years. The DPM can be controlled by using fibrous ceramic traps. However, clogging of traps by DPM requires the impractical periodic trap replacement. Following the recent work by Garner and Dent,4,5 we are investigating the in situ use of microwaves to regenerate the ceramic traps, thereby eliminating the trap replacement step in this process. The use of microwaves instead of conventional heating for trap regeneration has the advantage of selective heating of the DPM instead of the trap, if the trap absorbs insignificant microwave power relative to the DPM. Also, the oxidation characteristics of the DPM are needed to understand fully this regeneration process.The rate of energy absorption P per unit volume of a sample is given byP = wE"" |Eo|2 • (1 )where w is the angular frequency, |E0|2 is the intensity of the microwave radiation, and E” is the imaginary part of the dielectric constant (E = E’ + iE”) . Thus measurements of E11 for DPM and ceramic trap material are needed to determine their capacities for microwave absorption. In this paper, we report these measurements carried out at · a frequency of 8.7 GHz. Following microwave absorption, the DPM is expected to oxidize. The oxidation characteristics of the DPM have been investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of the evolved gases CO2 and CO and using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Finally, some information on the structure of carbon in DPM has emerged from the analysis of its x-ray diffraction spectra. Results of these experiments are reported in the following pages."

"The size distribution of coal mine dust is one of its most important characteristics because the particle size is known to govern the region of deposition of dust within the human respiratory tract. In addition, dust characteristics, particle settling rate, transportability of the dust and the efficiency of dust control measures are all affected by the particle size. As a result, particle size distribution of the airborne dust in a coal mine is a fundamental property that impacts on the health of underground workers.This paper deals with some basic findings on the size distribution of cool mine dust based upon the results of data collection in six underground coal mines using continuous miners. All airborne dust sampling was performed on development sections using eight stage cascade impactors and permissible 2. O l / min pumps. Samplers locations were fixed in the sections with respect to the continuous miner and roofbolter or with respect to the intake and return airways • Sampling times varied from 45 minutes to 6 hours , depending upon the dust concentration. The first topic of analysis was the test to determine whether the commonly used lognonnal distribution is valid when applied to airborne coal mine dust. Secondly, the conventional method of representing the· distribution using two parameters, the geometric mean and the geometric standard deviation, is questioned. Since almost all size data were found to show some degree of bimodality, the two parameter lognonnal distribution may not represent the total airborne coal mine dust size , quite adequately. Bimodal lognonnal distribution was tested to be a good approximation in the case with two modes in the size distribution.The final topic discussed in this paper is the 'locational variation of the airborne dust size distributions within the continuous mining section. The size distributions varied considerably at the different sampling locations with the continuous miner and roofbolter producing the coarser distributions. Fine size modes in the range of 2 to 4µ m including mostly respirable dust particles were present in almost all samples • Second dust generating sources such as the shuttle car movement were found to be major causes of high respirable dust concentrations in some cases ."

MINING LAW OF ALABAMA The law governing, and regulating the operation of coal mines in Alabama was enacted in 1911 and amended or revised in 1923, 1925, 1930, and 1935. The original law and subsequent revisions were progressive steps in safeguarding the health and safety of underground employees.

"INTRODUCTION The Bozeman corundum deposit was first examined in May 1944 by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines. In August 1944, the property was re-examined because of a sharply increased war demand for corundum. A small program of trench exploring was undertaken after the second examination. The work was started in October 1944 and was completed in December 1944. The bright annealing of copper is an industrial practice of considerable importance. In connection with this process, equilibrium concentrations of carbon monoxide and dioxide, which may exist in contact with copper and cuprous oxide at elevated temperatures, are of interest. Data obtained at the Pacific Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines enable estimates of these equilibrium concentrations to be made in two independent ways. Although the publication of final data on one method can not take place until certain further experimental work is accomplished, repeated requests which the Bureau of Minus has had for data relative to the annealing and deoxidation of copper justify the present preliminary report. This paper deals with the calculation of gas concentrations in the reduction of cuprous oxide, using more scientific data which will be published later, and refers especially to those conditions of temperature and concentration of practical implication, and from which critical limits ensue.

During the spring and summer of 1947, the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and core-drilling program in the vicinity of the Rodham mine, approximately 4 miles north of Shullsburg, Wis. This work was undertaken as a part of a general study of the zinc and lead-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin. Work in the Rodham-mine area was done to investigate further a mineralized area frilled in part by the Puritan Exploration Co., a Delaware corporation, with offices in Galena, Ill. Some significant lead-bearing samples were obtained, but no continuous ore body was disclosed as a result of the Bureau of Mines work.

This paper is a tabular compilation of data contained in a series of information circulars dealing with mining methods and costs at a large number of mines in the United States and some foreign countries. There circulars have been published from time to time during the years 1929 to 1934 inclusive. From time to time, as enough data became available in these circulars, other circulars and. bulletins have been published in which the data bearing upon different phases of nine operation were summarized, discussed, and analyzed. The present paper is a compilation of data on costs of drifting and crosscutting contained in earlier circulars, .designed to assemble this information in a convenient form for reference without attempting lengthy discussion of details of drifting and crosscutting practice. For such details the reader is referred to the circulars on individual mines.

Develop a simple and economical technique for determining the absolute stresses and the change of stress on the surface of roofs, floors, or walls in miners. Approach Use a commercially-available, permissible, Whittemore-type gage to determine the stress at the surface of a mine opening and to monitor any stress changes that might take place. How It Works The following equipment is used: ? One steel templet (for laying out a 60° rosette on the: rock surface). See first photograph. ? One 3/8-inch rock drill bit for drilling holes for the rosette pins. ? Six stainless-steel rosette pins. ? One Whittemore-type mechanical strain gage. ? One drill (not shown). ? Epoxy for cementing the rosette pins. ? Tape to hold the pins while the epoxy sets. The following procedure is used to determine the absolute stress on the rock surface. 1) Spot the location of the rosette pins with the templet. 2) Drill the pin holes and set the pins with epoxy cement. 3) Measure and record the distance between the pins across three diameters of the rosette with a 10-inch Whittemore-type gage. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important non fuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the U.S. Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

"Using. ESR spin trapping methodology, evidence was obtained that fresh quartz dust in a cell-free aqueous medium generated hydroxyl - and possibly superoxide radicals. The hydroxyl radical generation potential decreases on storing of fresh quartz dust in ambient air and on the addition of either catalase, superoxide dismutase, desferoxamine, or DMSO. The role of quartz related radicals in the biochemical mechanism of acute silicosis is suggested from these findings.IntroductionThis report summarizes our electron spin resonance (ESR) detection of oxygenated radical formation by freshly crushed quartz particles in a cell-free aqueous medium, and its inihibition by radical scavengers. This study was undertaken with to elucidate the primary biochemical mechanism involved in the development of silicosis (Farber, 1983; Reiser and Last, 1979; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). In particular the mechanism by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still not well understood (Farber. 1983; Reiser and Last, 1979;). It is generally believed that the action of quartz particles on the cell membrane is the starting point of the silicotic process (Farber, 1983; Parazzi et al., 1968). Thus the surface characteristics of the quartz particles have been the subject of several recent studies (Bolls et al.. 1983; Dalai et al., 1986; Fubini et al., 1987). Recently, We reported that mechanical crushing of quartz under normal atmosphere generates free radicals which decay with time, and that these free radicals are associated with a higher cytotoxicity of fresh quartz dust as compared to aged dust from the same stock (Dalai et al., 1986; Vallyathan et al.. 1988). The formation of Si• and. SiO--type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions has also been reported by Fubini et al. (1987). In addition, Gulumian and van Wyk (1987) have reported that quartz particles react with hydrogen peroxide (H202) to generates hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and suggested that this process might contribute to quartz's pathogenicity. However, these authors did not report the effects of metal chelators, so it was not clear as to whether the detected -OH radicals simply resulted from the Fenton reaction involving exogenous metal ion contaminants. Earlier, Marasas and Harington (1960) reported that quartz particles could function as an oxidant in a number of in vitro oxidations, including the hydroxylation of proline and lysine. They postulated that silica dusts, on reacting with water, could release H2O2 which might have the potential to react with various biological constituents and thus cause tissue damage. In fact, Gabor and coworkers (Gabor and Anca, 1974; Gabor et al., 1975) suggested that the cytotoxicity of quartz particles might be associated with the generation of some 'factor or factors possessing the properties of a free radicals capable of promoting the peroxidative chain cleavage of polyunsaturated fatty acid moieties of the phospholipids in the cell membrane. More recently Weitzman and Graceffa (1984) reported that asbestos is able to catalyze the generation of • OH radicals from H2O2. Their later work indicated that lipid peroxidation may be one of the mechanism by which asbestos produces tissue injury (Weitzman and Weitberg, 1985). This is significant because • OH radicals are capable of causing peroxidation by abstracting hydrogen atoms from cell-membrane lipids and initiating lipid peroxidation in lysosomal membrane (Fong et al., 1973). In fact, the formation of oxygenated species in reactions involving quartz was suspected since Kolbanev et al. (1980) reported the detection of H2O2 in the reaction of fresh quartz particle with aqueous medium. The present work was thus undertaken to detect the anticipated formation of some oxygenated, radical species by reactions of quartz in a cell-free media and its inhibition by radical"

In 1986 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 2 acre North Sisters Rocks Wilderness Study Area (OR-12-8) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is located in Curry County, Oregon, about 15 miles north from Gold Beach. No mines, prospects, or mining claims were located inside the study area, and no mineral resources were identified. Stone from the study area could be quarried and used for construction purposes; however, two nearby quarries have sufficient stone to satisfy local construction needs. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and mineral resource potential of the North Sisters Rocks WSA (Wilderness Study Area) 1/ at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the North Sisters Rocks WSA for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite having length to diameter ratios of 3:1, 2:1, 1:1, and 0.5:1 were broken in axial compression to determine whether lateral end constraint affected the breaking strength. Steel rings bonded to the ends of the model pillars with epoxy provided, during the loading cycle, a lateral end constraint of about 17 to 30 percent of the average axial stress. The effect of this constraint was to increase the breaking strength of the rock as compared to cylindrical pillars without constraint. The percentage increase in breaking strength varied with rock type and increased as the length to diameter ratio decreased. The maximum increase in breaking strength was 35 percent for marble pillars having a length to diameter ratio of 0.5:1. A theory was developed which relates the expected constraint to the physical properties of the ring and rock.

This report describes an instrument designed by the Bureau of Mines for quantitatively identifying texture of rock surfaces produced by grinding or extremely rough surfaces beyond the range of commercial surface measuring instruments. The transducer for the instrument is a linear variable differential transformer that converts mechanical motion caused by surface roughness, waviness, and lay to an electrical output. The electrical output is recorded graphically as an X-Y plot of the line traversed on the rock surface. Details of the synthesized device and its calibration are given. The sensitivity of the unit is 2 percent of the scale setting of the amplifier. The horizontal scale is adaptable from ¼ inch to 15 inches of specimen length with a sensitivity of 0.01 inch if a 10 to 1 magnification is used and 0.1 inch if a 1 to 1 magnification is used.

The investigation of the zirconium-gadolinium equilibrium diagram was part of a program to investigate rare:earth alloys for use as nuclear reactor control materials. Investigation of the zirconium-gadolinium equilibrium diagram revealed a eutectic system with limited terminal solubilities and one peritectoid reaction. The eutectic composition occurs at about 82 percent gadolinium, and the eutectic isotherm, which occurs at 1,220 ±5° C., extends from about 12 to 99+ percent gadolinium. A peritectoid isotherm occurs at 890 ±5° C. and extends from about 2 to 99+ percent gadolinium. The solubility of gadolinium in beta zirconium decreases from about 12 percent at 1,220 ±5° C. to about 2 percent at 890 ±5° C. The solubility of gadolinium in alpha zirconium decreases from approximately 5 percent at 890 ±5° C. to between 2 and 3 percent at 600° C. Vary little solubility of zirconium in gadolinium was indicated. An allotropic transformation of gadolinium was observed at 1,260 ±5° C. A change of the gadolinium transformation temperature on alloying with zirconium was not observed.
