The Bureau of Mines investigated palygorskite, a natural asbestiform material, to accumulate knowledge that might serve as a foundation for future synthesis of a similar material. Unit cell, chemical analysis, DTA, TGA, optical constants, and electron microscopy data were obtained. Selected palygorskite samples of bettor than 97-percent purity were used to obtain this information. Chemical analysis revealed the following formula: (OH2)4 (OH)2 Ca0.01Fe0.02K0 .c3Mg2.10A12.00Si7.93020.3.91 H2O. The optical constants for sodium light are a = 1.522; S = 1.530; ?=1.533; biaxially (-). The following orthorhomibic unit cell constants were determined: ao = 12.690 A, Z = 2, bo = 17.857 A, Dx = 2.327. co = 5.207 A, Identical diffraction patterns resulted from the three palygorskite samples that were studied. X-ray, chemical, DTA, TGA, and optical data were compared with literature values for similar fibrous materials. X-ray diffraction lines were indexed. Several electron micrographs were made to compare the structures of palygorskite and attapulgite with that of chrysotile. The micrographs revealed extremely short laths for attapulgite, very long flexible laths for palygorskite, and tubular structure for chrysotile.

The principal minerals produced in the Dominion of Fiji in 1982 were unrefined gold, silver, and tellurium. The combined value of these commodities was about $16 million,2 representing over 85% of the total value of mineral output. Cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products were the other minerals produced in Fiji. Despite the small part played by minerals in Fiji's economy, exploration on land and in the coastal areas was carried out by several international mining companies representing Australian, British, Canadian, West German, and U.S. interests. At the end of 1982, 30 prospecting licenses covering 2,300 square kilometers were issued. Most licenses were for copper, zinc, gold, and silver. Total expenditure on mineral exploration was $3.5 million.

Laboratory tests were made to determine if aluminum fluoride of commercial grade could be synthesized by reacting alumina hydrate with dilute ( 25 to 75 grams per liter of fluorine ) aqueous fluoride solutions . • Products containing up to 90 percent aluminum fluoride ( A1F ) were synthesized by reaction of alumina trihydrate ( A120 3H2O) with either dilute hydrofluoric acid ( HF ) or ammonium fluoride ( NHF) solutions , the ammonium fluoride solution resulting from ammonia ( NH ) desilication of a hydrofluoricfluosilicic acid ( HF - H₂ SiF ) solution . Fluorine recoveries of over 80 percent were obtained with either type of solution . The hydrated precipitates of AlF, and ( NH4 ) , A1F ( ammonium aluminum fluoride ) obtained by reacting hydrated alumina with these solutions were subsequently converted to anhydrous AlF, by controlled heating .

The Bureau of Mines has developed a computerized mathematical model to predict the distribution of accessory elements throughout a metallurgical process. The model can be used to determine process conditions that effect better accessory element control consistent with continued high primary metal recovery. The model presented is specific for determining the bismuth distribution in lead smelting but can be adapted to most extractive metallurgical processes. Thermodynamic, kinetic, and process parameters form the base for the model. Its logic and structure are described in detail.

A nearly dormant copper sulfide pilot-scale experimental leach containing 8.7 tons of are was injected with oxygen to determine its effect on the copper-leaching rate. Prior treatment of the uncrushed 0.25-percent-copper, mine-run stripping material consisted of 461 days of acid ferric sulfate leaching, which extracted 47 percent of the total copper. The permeability of the bed had decreased, and the percolation rate had decreased from an initial 20 gallons to 0.8 gallon per square foot per day. Copper extraction had nearly stopped. After injecting oxygen into the ore column and leaching for 30 days, the percolation rate was increased to 6 gallons per square foot per day. In an additional 298 days of leaching, an additional 40.7 percent of the copper was extracted. The improved leaching after the use of oxygen is attributed to stimulated bacterial action, better oxidation, and increased permeability.

The Bureau of Mines has developed structural design data for unreinforced concrete tunnel linings for drifts used in block caving stopes. Design data are given that consist of moment, thrust, and deformation coefficients from which bending, axial, boundary stresses, and structural deformations can be determined at any point on the lining. Data is given for circular, horseshoe, and rectangular linings, each with two different thicknesses and subjected to eight different loading conditions for drifts excavated in hard and soft rocks. The structural analyses performed are based on procedures that account for both the structural behavior of the lining and that of the drift and take into consideration deformational interaction that occurs between them.

The Bureau of Mines performed laboratory research to determine the effects of a barium-based fuel additive on diesel particulate emissions. The test engine was typical of types used to power underground coal min-ing equipment. Test parameters consisted of baseline measurements without additive, three fuel additive concentrations, and five steady-state engine loads, all at 1,200 r/min. Additive effects on soot mass concen-tration, opacity, particle size distribution, volatile fraction, and NOx emissions were determined. Important findings are as follows: Using the manufacturer's recom-mended additive concentration increased the gravimetrically measured mass of particulate by 30 to 80 pct at four of the five steady-state load conditions. Soot measurements by optical methods did not agree with those by gravimetric techniques, for additive-treated fuels. The additive reduced volatile hydrocarbons adsorbed on filter deposits by up to 50 pet. At most engine loads, carbon particulate was also reduced. About 40 pet of the barium added to the fuel was accounted for in the exhaust. The health implications for miners were considered, but no firm conclusions were drawn or recommendations made because the results are for steady-state conditions, which may not be representative of real-world operation of diesel-powered equipment underground.

Mining has one of the highest annual average fatality rates among major US industries. Health and safety dangers have been inherent to mining since the early days of picks and shovels. Even though miners' health and safety has improved over the years, mining is still one of the most dangerous occupations. Mining was traditionally a low tech industry. It is now driven by competitive pressures to go high-tech by using programmable electronics (PE) for machine control, atmospheric monitoring and material processing. The industry's experience with the functional safety of PE is limited compared with other industries. Thus, PE is an emerging technology for mining that can potentially create or worsen hazards. The US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA is addressing the safety of this new technology. NIOSH has a proactive project to generate recommendations for addressing the functional safety of PE-based mining systems before the technology proliferates. The recommendations take the form of a safety framework encompassing the entire life cycle for a PE-based mining system.

System objectives and design criteria for an in-mine ULF radio paging system are discussed. Coding formats, frequency and bandwidth selection criteria leading to the system design are discussed. The prototype call alert transmitter and pocket page receiver is functionally described. The report includes circuit descriptions, schematics, parts lists, printed circuit fabrication and assembly drawings. The report concludes with an estimate of the manufacturing cost for each assembly.

Cable bolt technology used by the U.S. coal industry was developed to a large extent in the 1990s. Today, these cable systems include both cable bolts and cable trusses to provide supplemental and secondary support in gate roads. This cable technology is significantly different than the cable systems in use in either U.S. hard-rock mines or Australian coal mines. Development of this technology was initiated and spurred by research efforts of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and has continued under the health and safety programs of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). It was also followed up by work of roof support manufacturers to create an essentially new support system. In this paper, the important support characteristics of both cable bolts and cable trusses are discussed. The design of cable systems and the basis for that design for tailgate and headgate situations are reviewed and explained. Case histories are presented on the application of these support systems based on experience gained at a number of in situ test sites.

This report investigates the mechanical behavior of fine soils in a lunar environment in engineering gravity-flow bins. The ultrahigh vacuum, absence of moisture, and a lunar gravity one-sixth that of earth gravity represents a unique environment, both advantageous and detrimental to these systems. On earth, moisture and gases contained in powder masses can be responsible for complex descriptions of gravity flow. Their absence appear to simplify the lunar soil behavior. However, simulation of the lunar gravity and vacuum complicates the development of experimental data for designing bins. The properties of a dry soil powder, its behavior under one-dimensional compression, and its torsional and direct shearing strength under earth atmosphere are described in part 1 of this paper. These properties provide the parameters for a finite-element analysis to optimize the design of bins, to be described by Dr. William Pariseau in part 2. Shear tests assess the failure criteria for the material. Compression tests provide modulus and (Ko) stress-ratio values from the loading portion of the compression cycle, duplicating the condition of a bin at rest with the discharge closed. During the unloading portion of the compression cycle (soil overconsolidated), the residual Ko values rise. It is postulated that this phenomenon creates a high-lateral stress in bins when they approach incipient flow. Assessment of the Ko value, overconsolidation ratio, and the void ratio state is proposed as a criterion to determine the flowability of powder.

If you missed this year?s Texas State Holmes Safety Association meeting, you missed a great one. On January 23 & 24, 2009, we held the meeting that was rescheduled when Hurricane Ike threatened Corpus Christi in September 2008. Sixty-five persons from across the state attended the meeting held at the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach. The weather was 82 degrees, and the sky was clear and perfect for a safety meeting. Evaluations submitted by the attendees gave the presentations, the networking, and even the food top marks. There were eight councils represented; Big Country, Central Texas, Costal Bend, Heart of Texas, Hill Country, North Texas and North Central. Presentations included Workplace Examinations, Emergency Preparedness, Screen Safety, Contractor Responsibilities, Powered Haulage, Supervising for Safety, and Basic Inspections of Slings and Rigging. Mr. Edward Lopez, SC MSHA District Manager, gave the State of the District Address.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a flotation-nitric acid leach procedure as part of the goal to maximize minerals and metals recovered from primary and secondary domestic resources. Studies were conducted on an ore that contained carbon-bearing and sulfide mineralization that rendered a portion of the ore refractory (resistant) to conventional leaching technology. The procedure investigated for treating the ore consisted of the following: (1) separation by flotation of the carbonaceous and sulfidic components from the ore, (2) leaching the flotation concentrate with nitric acid at 100° to 110° C, (3) leaching the flotation tailings with sulfuric acid, and (4) processing the combined leached slurries in a conventional manner to recover yellow cake. In step 2, HN03 is converted to gaseous products from which it is regenerated by reacting these products with air and water for further leaching. An overall uranium extraction of 96 pct was achieved by this procedure.

Low-temperature heat capacities of cesium chloride (7° - 300° K) and cesium iodide (13° - 300°K) were measured with an adiabatic calorimeter. The heat-capacity measurements were analyzed graphically to determine smooth values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function at 10° K intervals and at 273.15° and 298.15° K.

"INTRODUCTION The asphyxiation or poisoning of workmen in underground mines by noxious gases from blasting in adjacent strip mines can be prevented.Considerable progress has been made in eliminating or reducing hazards to the health and safety of underground workmen in anthracite mines, but seldom does a year pass without reported cases of underground workmen being poisoned by the fumes from blasts of explosives in strip-mining operations. In the early days of the anthracite industry, the coal near the surface was only partly mined, and many small stumps of pillars and barrier pillars were left standing; these pillars are now being recovered by stripping. It has become necessary to give more consideration to the effects of blasting at strip mines upon the quality of the air in underground mines adjacent to stripping operations.Special precautions are taken by the .personnel of the Jeddo-Highland Coal Co., whose mines are near Jeddo, Luzerne County, and near Centralia in Columbia and Schuylkill Counties in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania, to prevent asphyxiation of workmen by carbon monoxide or other toxic gases resulting from blasting in strip mines. The procedures established by the Jeddo-Highland Coal Co., are given in this circular so that others may benefit thereby and thus avoid hazards to underground workmen where mining is carried on under similar circumstances."

Application of the in situ recovery process to oil shale was tested during two field experiments near Rock Springs, Wyo. The results of these tests demonstrate that a self-sustaining combustion zone can be created in an oil shale body, that this zone can be moved through the oil shale, and that the process will produce shale oil. Evaluation of the combustion process by monitoring produced fluids for physical and chemical properties and volumes is described. The material and energy balance obtained is compared with a second evaluation based on extensive coring of the test area after the test was terminated. Several side results of the research are noted such as ground surface heating by underground burning and production of low-to medium-Btu gas during retorting.

This part of the final report treats some problems related to coal mine carrier frequency communication systems using the trolley wire/track transmission line. This work was undertaken for a brief period of time during the summer of 1972 to help understand, quantify, and improve some of the trolley wire carrier system behavior observed and/or predicted. Calculations and estimates of transmission line characteristic impedance, inductance and capacitance per unit length, mine motor loading effects, parallel line effects, and connection impedances are presented in Chapter I. Chapter II treats the design of r-f isolators for reducing the undesired and troublesome r-f loading that mine motors present to the trolley transmission line. Chapter III treats a diversity method for combatting standing wave nulls. I. CALCULATIONS RELATED TO TROLLEY WIRE COMMUNICATIONS A. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the West Virginia Office of Miners? Health, Safety, and Training (WVOMHS&T) investigated the explosion at the Sago Mine in West Virginia, which occurred on January 2, 2006, and resulted in 12 fatalities. As part of the investigation, the agencies requested that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory evaluate the effects of explosions on specific mine ventilation seals and other structures and objects at its Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM). The results of the LLEM study would assist MSHA and WVOMHS&T in a more thorough understanding of the various questions that arose during their investigations of the explosion. Six large-scale explosion tests were conducted in the LLEM from April to October 2006. The protocols for these tests, and in particular the procedures for constructing various Omega block seals, were developed mainly by MSHA and WVOMHS&T. NIOSH developed the experimental procedures at the LLEM that would provide the required range of explosion pressures against the seals. Three 40-in-thick seal designs using Omega 384 low-density block were constructed in the LLEM and exposed to various explosion pressures. These seal designs are referred to in this report as the ?2001 design,? the ?hybrid design,? and the ?Sago design.? The 2001-design Omega block seal (80 in high) located in crosscut 2 of the LLEM survived all six explosions, with pressure loadings up to 51 psi. The 2001-design Omega block seal (88 in high) in C-drift was destroyed during Test 2, which subjected the seal to a head-on explosion that resulted in a pressure loading of 51 psi. The height difference between the two seals and the orientation of each seal to the explosion were contributing factors. The higher seal would be weaker for the same seal thickness. The hybrid Omega block seal in crosscut 3 survived an explosion at a pressure loading of 25 psi and failed during another explosion at a pressure loading of 39 psi at the seal. Based on these tests, it seems that the hybrid seal design is weaker than the 2001 seal design. The Sago Omega block seals were constructed in crosscut 3 and C-drift before Test 3. The crosscut 3 seal survived a pressure loading of 18 psi and was destroyed during an explosion at a pressure loading of 35 psi at the seal. The C-drift seal survived a head-on explosion that resulted in a pressure loading of 21 psi and was destroyed during an explosion with a pressure loading of 57 psi at the seal. Based on these LLEM tests, it seems that the Sago seal design is weaker than the 2001 seal design, yet it still complied with the requirements of 30 CFR 75.335(a)(2) that were in effect at the time of the mine disaster. During these LLEM explosion tests, the distance of seal debris travel was also measured. In Test 5, the C-drift seal was destroyed during a head-on explosion that resulted in a pressure loading of 57 psi, and the seal debris was thrown over 500 ft. In Test 6, the C-drift seal was destroyed during a head-on explosion that resulted in a pressure loading of 93 psi, and the Omega block debris was thrown over 900 ft. During these tests, the explosion pressure effects on other structures and objects were also documented. Unless otherwise specified, all of the pressure data listed in this report represent the highest recorded smoothed (averaged over 10 ms) explosion pressure loadings. The information in this report was used by MSHA and WVOMHS&T as supporting data in their analyses and investigative reports of the Sago Mine explosion.

The production of crude mineral commodities in Bangladesh was limited to natural gas, a small amount of construction materials, and clay for ceramics and bricks. No metallic minerals were mined. The only mineral commodity of economic significance was natural gas. Natural gas production has 'been climbing steadily and becoming an increasingly important source of energy for the country. Proved gas reserves were over 4.5 trillion cubic feet, but the amount has been increasing as exploration discovers large new deposits. Some sources quote reserves at over 10 trillion cubic feet.

A survey of electromagnetic noise reports was performed and a summary of the results are given. Industrial concerns were surveyed for techniques to minimize the effects of electromagnetic noise and are presented. The common types of communication links used in mines today are presented. A mathematical development was presented which determines the probability of bit errors versus distance for various types of communication links designed for in mine use. The probability of undetected errors for the protocols of the communication links is given together with burst error detection.
