No experimental heat-of-formation value has been reported in the literature for cerium sesquioxide. The heat of formation of bismuth sesquioxide has not been determined in recent years, and the older value was subject to large uncertainty. Accordingly, the heats of combustion of cerium sesquioxide and bismuth metal were measured by the Federal Bureau of Mines. The heats of formation were: ?H°298.15 = -427.01 ± 0.70 kcal. /mole for cerium sesquioxide and ?H°298.15 = -137.16 ± 0.30 kcal./mole for bismuth sesquioxide. The free energy of formation was estimated for cerium sesquioxide and accurately calculated for bismuth sesquioxide. The data were compared with values in the literature.

[Laboratory research and, control in the production an. utilization of petroleum and it 3 products have expanded greatly during the past decade, and much of the routine control and experimental equipment now rewires the constant daily use of liquid mercury. In spite of this ;;renter use, very little consideration has been given to the hazard that might be occasioned by the toxic vapors of mercury unavoidably spilled' of otherwise exposed to the atmosphere during the normal procedure of laboratory open at ions. A simple visual examination ).'.' son-,, r° the laboratories reveal the presence of a considerable quantity of mercury in the cracks of floors, on work tables, and on ark, around equipment stands. Usually this mercury is contaminated with oil3/ and dirt so that it remaining in a finely divided state and a ;mall amount pre presents a relatively large surface for evaporation. Since :mercury shows measurable volatility at a temperature v,.^ lo.! 5o F., mercury vapor will be present in, the mercury _3 exposed promiscuously.]

"Filter samplers are one of the simplest methods and, in some instances, one of the only methods that can be use to obtain samples of particulate matter suspended in a gaseous medium. Once collected, particles are normally analyzed directly on the filter by gravimetric, chemical or microscopic techniques. However, it is sometimes desirable to resuspend the particles in an airstream for analysis. This would be the case if the size distribution of the particles were to be measured using one of many particle sizing techniques such as inertial classifiers, optical particle counters or the TSI Aerodynamic Particle Sizer CAPS).A ·technique has been recently developed whereby one can resuspend particles from filter samples in an airstream. The technique has been used for the resuspension of coal dust from filters. The resuspended particles were then introduced into the APS. This development was necessary since an APS can not be taken directly into an underground coal mine. For this application, particle samples are collected on membrane filters in the underground mines. The mass concentration of the particles determined through gravimetric analysis. The particle size distribution was tl1en determined by resuspending the particles and passing them through a TSI Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS). Excellent agreement has been obtained between the size distribution directly measured underground with a cascade impactor and that measured from the resuspended particles. For this experiment, an open-faced filter sampler was placed adjacent to the cascade impactor in the n1ine. The particles collected on the filter were resuspended in the laboratory and Measured with the APS.A venturi aspirator is used in the apparatus developed for resuspending the particles. The venturi has a small diameter capillary tube placed in the venturi throat. High velocity air flow is passed through the venturi, thereby, creating a low pressure region at the exit of the capillary tube. The low pressure draws air through the tube. The filter with deposited particles is located at the inlet to the capillary tube where the air flow into the capillary resuspend the particles. Once airborne, the particles are deagglomerated as they pass through the high velocity air flow in the venturi throat."

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted joint research on dust explosions by studying post-explosion dust samples. The samples were collected after full-scale explosions at the PRL Lake Lynn Experimental Mine and after laboratory explosions in the PRL 20-L chamber and the Fike 1-m3 chamber. The dusts studied included both high and low volatile bituminous coals. Low temperature ashing for 24 hr at 515°C was used to measure the incombustible content of the dust before and after the explosions. The data showed that the post-explosion incombustible content was always as high as or higher than the initial incombustible content. The MSHA alcohol coking test-was used to determine the amount of coked dust in the post-explosion samples. The results showed that almost all coal dust that was suspended within the explosion flame produced significant amounts of coke. Measurements of floor dust concentrations after LLEM explosions were compared to the initial dust loadings to determine the transport distance of dust during an explosion. All of these data will be useful in future forensic investigations of accidental dust explosions in coal mines or elsewhere. Data assembled by the Bureau of Mines , coupled with requests from coal companies , have emphasized the desirability of establishing standardized specifications for brattice cloth with particular respect to durability and fireproofing . Brattice cloth is a canvas or other material , often covered with some fireproofing composition , which is used extensively in coal mining for temporarily deflecting air into pillar workings and maintaining ventilation at the working faces . These specifications will be established , it is planned , through a cooperative program in which the U. S. Bureau of Standards will make a series of tests of various brattice cloths treated with respect to fire- resisting qualities and the U. S. Bureau of Mines will continue to assemble field data on the use of brattice cloth . Plans now are being made for this cooperative work. Without attempting to make a complete survey , the Bureau of Mines has made preliminary studies and investigations , and verious representative coal - mining companies have furnished detailed information . The information thus gained will be used as the basis for the cooperative investigation , but the Bureau of Mines would welcome additional information from mine operators on the character and weight of brattice cloth , conditions of use , durability , quantity employed and price . Such information should be sent to the Director , Bureau of Mines , Washington , D. C. The mine operator is interested in procuring at reasonable cost a brattice cloth with lasting fireproofing quality and of as great durability and strength as possible . There has been a lack of assembled data and knowledge regarding the subject , but the Bureau of Mines feels that this lack of knowledge may be overcome if the coal -mining companies will lend their hearty support to the cooperative investigation and submit information relative to the use of brattice cloth in their own properties . Information contained in this report is based on data obtained from coal operators in bituminous districts of Pennsylvania , Alabama , Utah , Indiana , Illinois , Colorado and Nova Scotia .

A comprehensive review of published research was carried out to identify methods for teaching and assessing critical but nonroutine skills needed for coping with emergency situations. Computerized searches of the relevant data bases were carried out, along with identification of relevant articles and materials by personal contact with experts in many fields. The citations listed in this bibliography resulted from this systematic literature search and review. The computer searches and an analysis of this literature are described in technical report 1. Specific methods for assessing critical skills proficiency in aviation, medicine, organization management, the military, and other industrial/ technical workplaces were described. The potential application of these methods for teaching and assessing (1) critical first aid and (2) self-rescue and escape skills to underground coal miners in annual refresher training was explored. Research and development activities that may improve mine health and safety training were suggested. Most of the entries in this bibliography were assembled in 1984 through 1985. Study of these materials contributed to the completion of the project research that followed. This later work is reported in the project technical report 2 and the final report. This bibliography is most useful when combined with examination of technical reports 1 and 2 and the final project report.

The heats of formation of anhydrous barium carbonate (witherite), strontium carbonate (strontianite), and lead carbonate (cerussite) were determined by solution calorimetry. The solution mediums were hydrochloric acid for barium and strontium carbonates and perchloric acid for lead carbonate. The heats of formation at 298.15° K are as follows: BaCO3 -297.5 ± 0.8 kcal/mole; SrCO3 -294.6 ± 0.5 kcal/mole; and PbCO3 -168.0 ± 0.3 kcal/mole.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a study to determine the effects of selected, state-of-the-art emission control technologies on the ambient concentrations of particulate matter and gases emitted by underground diesel-powered mining equipment. Tests were conducted in an isolated zone of an underground mine to evaluate the effectiveness of alternative fuel formulations, namely, water-fuel emulsions, blended biodiesel fuels, ultralow sulfur diesel fuel, and #1 diesel; and selected exhaust after treatment devices, namely, diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs), diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems, and filtration systems designed around high-temperature disposable filter elements. The results showed that using a cold-weather and warm-weather water-fuel emulsion formulation reduced mass concentrations of elemental carbon (EC) by about 70% and 85%, respectively. The 20% and 50% soy biodiesel blends reduced EC by 49% and 66%, respectively. The reductions were slightly less pronounced for the 20% and 50% yellow grease biodiesel blends—33% and 56%, respectively. EC concentrations were unaffected by using ultralow sulfur diesel in place of #1 diesel. Use of the reformulated fuels did not substantially alter the concentrations of nitric oxide and carbon monoxide. However, a measurable increase in the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) peak concentration was observed during the biodiesel tests. The ArvinMeritor (AM) fuel-burner DPF system with a palladium-catalyzed DOC reduced EC concentrations by 92%. The diesel filter elements from Donaldson Co., Inc., and Filter Service & Testing Corp. reduced the EC concentration of the mine air by 92% and 70%, respectively. When the palladium-based DOC was used with the AM DPF, it raised the average and peak downstream NO2 concentrations by a factor of three. Tests of the AM DPF system with a platinum-catalyzed DOC and CAP/ETG catalytic particulate oxidizer system had to be terminated because the elevated NO2 concentrations threatened to overexpose the operator. The tests with only a selected DOC also resulted in increased NO2 concentrations in mine air.

The Bureau of Mines determined the effect of slag additives on copper solubility and the distribution of typical impurity elements between copper-iron matte and silica-saturated fayalite (iron silicate) slag at 1,250° C, in CO-C02 atmospheres with 10 pct S02. Small additions (<10 pct) of CaO, A1203, and MgO were shown to decrease copper solubility in the slag. Additions of CaO increased the solubility of bismuth and tellurium in the slag at lower matte grades. Al 20 3 additions decreased the solubility of tellurium in the slag, but increased that of bismuth at lower matte grades. A1203 additions increased the solubility of both at lower matte grades. With no additives, matte grade did not affect the solubility of bismuth in slags, whereas increasing matte grade resulted in a slight decrease in the tellurium solubility in slag. Additions of CaO or As203 alone to the slag increased selenium and arsenic distribution to the matte, but had little or no effect on antimony distribution; whereas small MgO additions decreased antimony distribution to the matte but had no effect on arsenic and selenium distribution. In slags with no additives, selenium distribution to the matte increased with increasing matte grade, while that of antimony decreased and that of arsenic was unchanged.

Extraction of silver from silver mill tailings by an electrolytic oxidation procedure was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Various parameters affecting silver extraction, such as electrolysis time, particle size, and dissolution of the silver as the tetrachloro or cyanide complex, were studied at 30° C with an electrolyte concentration of 20 weight-percent sodium chloride. Resulting silver extractions ranged from 77 to 90 percent, depending on the tailings being treated. Concomitant extraction of mercury ranged between 90 and 95 percent. Power consumption was 52 to 90 kilowatt-hours per ton for the tailings investigated. Comparative experiments using direct cyanidation resulted in extraction of 46 to 82 percent of the silver and 20 percent of the mercury. Cyanide consumption ranged from 3.3 to 9.4 pounds per ton of tailings, depending on the tailings being treated. Silver and mercury were recovered from leach solutions by precipitation on iron powder, followed by conventional distillation and fire refining steps.

A zinc-pyrite ore from the Gray deposit in Jo Daviess County, Ill., was successfully concentrated on a laboratory scale. Initially, drill cuttings were submitted for separation of zinc and iron concentrates. Subsequent to mine development, a large sample of coarse ore was submitted to ascertain its amenability to sink-float treatment to produce a low-grade zinc-iron concentrate and discard a clean tailing. The samples of ore were submitted to the Rolla Metallurgical Branch by the Mining Division of the Federal-Bureau-of Mines. They were obtained during the recent war as a part of the extensive government program to increase metal production through exploration for new mineral deposits and investigation of old mineralized areas. The first sample consisted of about 3,000 pounds of drill cuttings collected, during the Bureau?s churn and diamond- drilling program. The second sample was taken at a later date, after Tri-State Zinc, Inc., had opened the deposit and commenced milling the ore. This sample consisted of a ?ton-of mill feed crushed through 2 inches and collected over a period of 3 days.

Although motor gasoline marketed in the United States in January of this year was, on the average, slightly more volatile than that sold in January 1925, the improvement in quality is too small to be of importance. In other words, there is no evidence that any radical change in the quality of gasoline is being made at the present time. During the past six years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the thirteenth in the series. The cities in which samples have been collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

They are a revision of ""Tentative Inspection Standards for Anthracite Mines,"" published as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7282 issued in May 1944 and used as a guide in Federal inspections. No provision made in these safety standards should be construed or operate to nullify any existing State statutes; they are intended to supplement the State statutes in the interest of increased mine safety. Electromagnetic narrow-band signals were transmitted through the earth at 27 coal mines located throughout the United States. From those Bureau of Mines tests, apparent earth conductivity values were derived based upon a homogeneous half-space model of the earth. The derived conductivity values were found to be inversely proportional to the transmitted frequency and mine depth. A linear regression model relating the logarithm of the conductivity to the mine depth was formulated, and the results indicate that the mine depth can be an adequate predictor of the apparent earth conductivity above coal mines. Apparent earth conductivity was found to decrease with mine depth.

Computing average grade and tonnage either for an entire ore deposit or for individual blocks of ore is a continuing problem in mining. As part of a research program, investigating application of statistical techniques to mine sampling, Bureau of Mines engineers at the Denver Mining Research Center have made extensive use of an electronic digital computer for developing mine sampling theory, simulation of ore deposits, and analysis of mine sample and assay data. This report is one of a series describing use of the digital computer for rapid solution of computing problems in the mining industry.3 4 Development of a computer program to compute ore reserves by the commonly used triangular method was necessary so that results could be made available for analysis within hours.

[The Bureau of Mines has measured the low-temperature heat capacities and high-temperature enthalpies of crystalline K2Si2O5 as part of a program for advancing mineral resources technology with energy economy. High-temperature enthalpies of glassy and liquid K2Si2O5 and crystalline K2SiO3 were also mea¬sured. An adiabatic calorimeter operating over the range 5 to 308 K was used for the heat capacity measurements for K2Si2O5 from which the standard entropy at 298.15 K, S°298 = 45.55 ±0.05 cal/deg-mole, was calculated. Tabulated values of Cp°, S°, -(G° -HO°)/T, and H°-HO° from 5 to 300 K are given for K2Si2O5. A copper-block drop calorimeter was used in the enthalpy measurements, operating from 298.15 to 1,198 K for K2SiO3 and from 298.15 to 1,453.8 K for K2Si2O5. No transitions were found for K2SiO3. The KI2Si2O5 showed two reversible first order transitions, one at 510 K with a heat of transition of 0.29 kcal/mole and one at 867 K with a heat of transition of 0.38 kcal/mole. The heat of fusion for K2Si2O5 20 5 was calculated to be 8.42 kcal/mole. Relative enthalpies are given in equation form, and high-temperature values are tabulated for Cp°, S°, - (G°-H°298 )/T, and H°-H°298 . A laboratory electrophoresis column was designed to separate pyrite from fine coal by utilizing an observed difference in the electrophoretic mobilities of the two materials in water. The apparatus worked well when tested with synthetic mixtures of coal and pyrite, but some modifications in design and procedure were necessary to provide a sharper separation. After these changes were made, the column was tested with a high-pyritic-sulfur raw coal sample. The column successfully fractionated the sample, removing not only the pyritic refuse, but a siliceous refuse as well. The invest ion demonstrated on a laboratory scale that pyrite and other impurities can be separated from fine coal by electrophoresis.

An independent contractor is defined by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as ?any person, partnership, corporation, subsidiary of a corporation, firm, association or other organization that contracts to perform services or construction at a mine.? Contractors that perform specific types of work are required to report the number of employees who work at coal mines and noncoal mines. Companies In 2007, a total of 2,999 contracting companies reported employment at coal mines to MSHA, or 35.7% of all independent contracting companies.

An infrared absorbance technique is described for analyzing anodic gases produced during the electrowinning of uranium , thorium , and rare - earth metals in molten fluorides . Typical components determined qualitatively in a gas sample are CO , CO₂ , CF4 , C₂ Fe , C3F8 , COS , CS₂ , and SiF4 . About 20 minutes are required to record and interpret the spectrogram , and report quantitative results for CO, CO₂ , CF4 , and SiF . The procedure is used for control during electrolysis .
