[The use of vapor-tight tanks has proved so effective in reducing the evaporation losses of petroleum that today practically all operators are using this typo of equipment. It has boon shown, however, that vapor-tight tanks should be supplemented with additional measures which will further reduce evaporation. Probably the most effective use of the supplemental measures are found on the small producing leases where the breathing losses from vapor-tight stock tanks materially affect the volume and gravity of the stored oil. The breathing loss from a vapor-tight stock tank that is filled and emptied daily is a negligible quantity. Also, the filling loss, which on the average varies between 0.1 and 0.2 per cent, usually is not of a sufficient quantity to affect materially the value of the crude. However, the combined breathing and filling losses from a vapor-tight tank requiring several days to fill are of sufficient importance to warrant the use of measures in addition to the vapor-tight tanks. The breathing losses are caused by atmospheric variations. Probably the greatest are the changes in atmospheric temperature which cause changes in temperature of the vapors in the tank. During the day, as the temperature increases, the gasoline-saturated vapors in the tank expand and are forced out into the atmosphere. At night the vapors are cooled and contract, drawing into the tank fresh air, which becomes saturated with gasoline vapor and is forced out of the tank during the following day. In Addition to the maximum and minimums temperature variations there are many smaller variations throughout a twenty-four period caused by showers, clouds, winds, and other atmospheric conditions which likewise cause the tank to breathe. The two mist common measures used by lease operators for reducing breathing losses in vapor-tight tanks are, first, operating; lease tanks under pressure, and second, the use of light colored paints anti tank houses. In this report these two methods are discussed together with their adaptability to lease operation. Results of experimental observations are given which show the reduction of evaporation looses where these supplemental measures have been used.]

The Bureau of Mines, in an effort to improve planning and development in coal mining, is investigating strata interactions associated with mining of multiple coalbeds. Two common interactions that occur between adjacent coalbeds are subsidence and pillar load transfer. The study described involves underground observations and measurements conducted at two Pennsylvania mines, each affected by one of these interactions. At the mine affected by subsidence, measurements show that undermining had little effect on upper mine pillar stability, but had a more severe effect on the development and maintenance of entries. Roof-to-floor measurements recorded over four times more convergence in entries developed over gob as compared with entries developed over support pillars in the lower mine. At the mine affected by pillar load transfer, Initial in situ measurements have shown the existence of a pressure arch in the lower workings. Prior research has shown that arch interaction between two adjacent openings can create stress concentrations in the in-nerburden. Underground measurements and results obtained from both mine sites correlate with theoretical and photoelastic multiple-seam models, and eventually these field data will serve to refine model accuracy. Further study of multiple-seam interaction mechanisms will lead to improved mine planning, increased resource conservation, and a safer working environment.

Two molten salt systems were evaluated as electrolytes for the repetitive recovery of tungsten from tungsten oxide (W03) made by calcining commercial-grade ammonium paratungstate. Using a sodium chloride-sodium fluoride-potassium aluminum tetrafluoride electrolyte at 800° C, 1 pound of 99.8 percent tungsten was recovered for each 2.7 kilowatt-hours of energy consumed. The metal contained 1,100 ppm carbon, was in dendritic masses of spherical grains, and had an apparent bulk density of 5.41 g/cm3. T ngsten of 99.9 percent purity was won from a sodium pyrophosphate-sodium tetraborate-sodium chloride electrolyte at 1,000° C; 6.0 kilowatt-hours of energy was consumed for each pound of metal recovered. The metal contained 120 ppm carbon, was in dendritic masses of hexagonal acicular crystals, and had an apparent bulk density of 7.25 g/cm . Each metallic impurity--aluminum, calcium, copper, iron, nickel, and silicon--in the two tungsten products was 16 ppm or less.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting an investigation of crude petroleum from producing fields in the United States and the Western Hemisphere and has published a series of reports on these fields. Analyses of crude-oil samples tom some oil fields of Louisiana are given in Bulletin 291.4/ Analyses of 26 representative crude oils from various producing formations of southern Louisiana are given in is report. These.samples are from 14 field's in 10 parishes in the southern part of the State, usually designated as the "Louisiana Gulf Coast area." ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Thanks are due the representatives of the various companies from whom samples were obtained for their cooperation and assistance in helping to secure representative samples. "SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONThe test data indicate that water infusion of the Pittsburgh coal seam does not reduce the amount of fine dust produced during mining operations to the extent reported elsewhere. Wide variations in the amounts of dust collected in the air current were noted in duplicate samples and repetitive tests. Changes in depth and location of the infusion holes and amount of water injected and addition of a wetting agent to the water had little effect on the amount of dust liberated.Water was forced readily into the coal. Some water flowed out along the cleats, but an appreciable amount remained in the seam. Little or no water pene¬trated the coal seam above the upper infusion holes.The average dust concentration (with and without infusion) in the return air, 40 feet outby the working face, was 25 million particles per cubic foot during undercutting, 20 million during drilling, 75 million during shot firing, and 20 million during hand loading. At the working face the average concentration was 3 to 6 times higher. The concentrations were measured at an airflow of 1,600 cubic feet per minute (c.f.m.) at the face.On the basis of this short investigation, no final conclusions can be made on the effectiveness of water infusion in reducing the amount of fine dust liberated during mining in the Pittsburgh coal seam. However, the data indicate that dust reduction resulting from infusion would be small.INTRODUCTIONThe production of fine coal dust is an inherent part of nearly every phase of mining. The use of large, high-speed continuous-mining machines and other mechanical equipment has increased dust production. In addition, in coal seams that have been subjected to high pressures for a long period, and particularly in dry and friable seams, some very fine dust is in the seam before mining. Much effort has been devoted to allaying and collecting at its source the fine coal dust released during mining. One of the comparatively recent techniques that has been developed for this purpose is infusion of water or other liquids into the coal seam. This method consists of injecting water under pressure into a coal seam to neutralize the fine dust released during mining. The water generally is introduced through bore holes in the face before undercutting."

Laboratory equipment, which simulates abrasive impacts between steel and minerals that might be present during pneumatic transport of coal, was used by the Bureau of Mines to characterize the potential explosion hazard of such collisions in an atmosphere of fine coal dust, air, and methane. A variety of coal mine rock materials, including sandstone, limestone, and pyrite-bearing limestone, were impacted with specimens of pipeline steel. Tests were con-ducted in atmospheres containing zero to 6.4 vol-pct methane mixed with zero to 300 mg/l coal dust. Coal dust in air alone was not ignited by abrasive impacts, but additions of as little as 1 vol-pct methane to the coal dust and air mixture resulted in ignitions. Steel impacting against sandstone caused ignitions in mixtures of coal dust, air, and methane, and the probability for ignitions increased with an increase in methane. No ignitions occurred with impacts of steel on lime-stone or pyrite-bearing limestone, even when large showers of sparks were produced. Studies of the effect of tangential collision velocity showed that no ignitions of coal dust, air, and methane occurred below 900 fpm (4.57 m/sec). Ignitions in coal-air-methane mixtures were found to be caused by a hot friction-induced smear on the impacted rock at the impact site rather than by sparks. High-speed photography was used to verify this observation.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a computer program for calculating the composition of gravimetric primary standard gas mixtures. The Fortran IV program applies corrections due to buoyancy variations of the cylinder and inaccuracies of the balance weights. The program also determines the statistical error due to the sensitivity and precision of the balance and applies the analytical error of the weighed gases.

"INTRODUCTION The rock-bit interaction during the cutting process in underground mines has been a matter of great concern to mining operators, researchers and manufacturers, particularly after the passage of strict environmental laws. Coal cutting bears directly on airborne coal dust generation and rock cutting generates frictional sparks which may cause face ignitions, jeopardizing the productivity, safety and economy of the industry. It is imperative to investigate into the factors which have influence on bit we.ar. Hurt and Evans (1981) concluded that the point attack bits have greater ignition potential than the conventional wedge shaped bits, and also worn bits were more responsible for ignition than the new bits. The results of a study (Khair et al., 1992) suggested that after 7% weight loss, the bit should be replaced. The polycrystalline compact diamond (PDC) tipped bits are reported to be cost effective in a study done by USBM (Twin Cities Research Center), and it was stated that the PDC tipped drill bits had 80 to 100 times longer life than the ordinary tungsten carbide (WC) tipped bits.This paper presents the results of the experiments which were conducted utilizing a coal cutting simulator at the laboratory of the Department of Mining Engineering, West Virginia University, USA. The description of the machine and the experimental set-up have been described elsewhere (Khair et al., 1989; Gehi & Khair, 1994), and therefore, will not be discussed here. The rock types which were used in experimen~ are Tennessee sandstone, Berea sandstone and Indiana limestone. The operating parameters include (1) drum speed, (2) water spray pressure and (3) bit type. Besides studying the wear characteristics influenced by the above mentioned variables, the effect of these parameters on the required cutting force, specific energy consumption, acoustic emissions rate and rise in temperature of the bit were also studied. A preliminary study was also done to compare we.ar characteristics of the WC bits with those of the poly-crystalline compact diamond tipped bits."

This Bureau of Mines report is the second of a series of process evaluations planned to determine the relative processing costs of producing metallurgical-grade alumina from low-grade aluminous materials. Included in these evaluations are recommendations for additional research and development to improve the processes and to lower their costs. The design for each process is based on published work. The processes considered in this report are designed to extract alumina as aluminum chloride from calcined clay with 20 percent hydrochloric acid and to remove the silica residue by filtration. Iron is removed by one of the following processes: Isopropyl ether extraction, in which iron chloride is extracted before decomposing the aluminum chloride; gas precipitation, in which the aluminum chloride is precipitated with hydrogen chloride while leaving the iron chloride in solution; gas precipitation-isopropyl ether extraction, in which the aluminum chloride from precipitation is extracted with isopropyl ether, if necessary; caustic purification, in which a crude alumina is produced and then purified by a modified Bayer operation; or sinter purification, in which a crude alumina is produced and then purified by a lime-soda sinter operation. This report describes procedures for using a high-speed camera to study blasting phenomena. Both quantitative and qualitative information can be obtained, provided that proper interpretations of the projected two-dimensional images are made. Geometrical relationships between object and image displacements are given in terms of horizontal and vertical angles of the camera optic axis with respect to the quarry face. Correction factors are given for obtaining true object displacements from image displacements in the camera film plane. The time of initial rock movement also is considered, and the control-ling factors of camera speed, scale factor, minimum increment of projection measurement, etc., are evaluated in terms of minimum time intervals. The high-speed camera and associated equipment are described, and field measurements and laboratory data analysis techniques are outlined. An analysis of a typical high-speed motion picture is made, and the application of the necessary correction factors is illustrated.

Large quantities of gasoline are lost each year by evaporation from bulk-storage station tanks. The rate of evaporation from bulk-station tanks is influenced by two principal factors: First, the vapor pressure of the gasoline in the tank; and second, the amount of "breathing" of the tank. The vapor pressures of the gasoline govern the amount of the gasoline vapor in the air-vapor mixture above the gasoline in a tank at a given temperature. This is one of the principal factors in determining the total pressure of the air-vapor mixture within the tank. The "breathing" of the tank is caused by the inflow of air from the atmosphere during certain periods of the day and the expulsion of the air-vapor mixtures at other times, caused by atmospheric variations. The pressure built up within a tank and the amount of gasoline in the air-vapor mixture are both a direct function of the temperature existing within the tank. Therefore, two of the most common methods for reducing evaporation losses from bulk-station tanks are: (1) The use of vapor-tight tanks equipped with relief valves and operated at 1 or 2 ounces of pressure and about 1/2-ounce vacuum; (2) reducing the temperature of tanks and their contents by painting them a light color, by insulation, and in some instances by using water sprays. Water sprays, although effective, usually are too expensive to operate economically. In order to determine and compare the effects of various colors, insulation, and pressure in reducing the evaporation losses of gasoline held in storage in bulk-storage tanks, the Bureau of Mines made observations from May 29 to October 15. 1930, on five horizontal tanks of 12,000-gallon capacity each, which were erected at the plant of Black. Sivalls and Bryson Manufacturing Co., Kansas City, Mo. This report gives in detail the results of these evaporation tests.

This guide considers only nine of the many wire rope terminations used in the mining industry so use of the information presented for terminations not specifically addressed can be done, but with some risk. The nine terminations considered are: Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve & Thimble, Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve, Wedge Socket, Swaged Socket, Turn Back Loop with Aluminum Sleeve & Thimble, Thimble Splice with Four Tucks, V-Bolt Clip with Thimble, Zinc Poured Socket, and Epoxy Resin Poured Socket. The guide uses pull test data, axial fatigue test data, and data on sensitivity to poor workmanship, to rank the nine terminations with respect to these performance measures. A selection procedure is suggested and illustrated with an example. Failure data is used to identify the common modes of failure of each termination and so help the inspector direct his attention to the likely location for a failure and describe what he should be looking for. The data on which this guide is based is included so that as new data becomes available, the ranking order can be adjusted accordingly.

"Chromates are known to induce tumors (1, 2), mutations (3), and DNA damage (4-6). However, the underlying biochemical mechanism(s) is (are) not fully understood (6). Recent studies have indicated that hydroxyl (·OH) radical may play an important role (7-11). The mechanistic studies of Cr(Vl)-related ·OH radical generation in biochemical systems have shown the reaction of a Cr(V) species with hydrogen peroxide (H20 2 } through a Fenton-like mechanism to be one of the important steps (9-11): Cr(V) + H20 2 - Cr(VI) + ·OH + OH-. (1)In biological systems the Cr(V) species are generated via the reduction of Cr(VI) by a variety of components, such as microsomes (12), mitochondria (13), mitochondrial electron transfer complexes (14), and at least three flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase (GSSG-R),3 lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) (9, 15, 16). In the case of flavoenzymes, Cr(V) formation is accompanied by the reduction of molecular oxygen ( 0 2 ) to H20 2 • The Cr(V) species then reduces H20 2 to generate •OH radicals and Cr(VI) (16).To understarid the mechanism by which Cr(V}-generated ·OH radicals cause cytotoxicity, Aiyar et al. A mineral survey of the 67, 110-acre Raven?s Eye WSA (Wilderness Study Area) in the north-central Snake River Plain of Idaho was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management. The WSA is in Blaine and Lincoln Counties; the northwest corner is about 1 mile east of Carey, 10. A search of county mining claim records indicated that no claims have been located in the WSA. Basaltic lava is the only rock type exposed within the WSA. A platy variety of lava (slab pahoehoe) occurs that is produced from other lava fields in southern Idaho. The material is marketed as decorative stone, used for wall veneers, and retails for approximately $125/ton. Within the W5A, approximately 18,000 tons of indicated reserves are concentrated in two areas, and a total of 12,000 tons of indicated subeconomic resources were found at six other localities. An additional 10,000 tons of inferred subeconomic resources are unevenly distributed over the remainder of the WSA.

The chemical and galvanic corrosion properties of commercially pure titanium, a titanium-manganese alloy, a titanium-aluminum-tin alloy, 2 titanium-copper alloys, and 2 titanium-aluminum alloys were studied. Tests were conducted in synthetic ocean water, tapwater, 1-percent sodium hydroxide, 5-percent ferric chloride, and 5-percent ammonium sulfate solutions, various concentrations of sulfuric and hydro-chloric acids, and 1-percent oxalic acid. All tests were carried out at 35° or 60° C., with a flow of air or helium. Dissimilar metals involved in galvanic-couples experiments were aluminum, magnesium, and stainless steel. Electrode-potential measurements on single (uncoupled) specimens were also measured. Commercially pure titanium and the titanium-base alloys were generally quite similar in their resistance to corrosion, whether alone or in. contact with a dissimilar metal. Contact with the titanium metals caused aluminum and magnesium to corrode by galvanic action. Coupling with stainless steel in sulfuric acid solutions decreased the normal corrosion rate of the titanium metals. Contact with aluminum in air-aerated oxalic acid and 0.1N sulfuric acid solutions resulted in cathodic corrosion of titanium and the titanium-base alloys; however, there were a few exceptions. The copper alloys showed better corrosion characteristics than titanium in certain sulfuric acid solutions but were more susceptible to chemical attack in some hydrochloric acid solutions.

An economic and technical evaluation of a proposed process to recover alumina by leaching calcined kaolinitic clay with sulfurous acid is presented in this Bureau of Mines report. After the insoluble portion of the clay has been removed by leaching, monobasic aluminum sulfite is precipitated from the pregnant leach solution by partial hydrothermal decomposition. Further heating completes the decomposition to an impure alumina hydrate. This intermediate is purified in a modified Bayer process, which includes dissolving the alumina hydrate in a caustic solution at high temperature and pressure, then decreasing the temperature and pressure to precipitate alumina trihydrate. Calcining the trihydrate produces the alumina product. A cost estimate was prepared for a plant producing 1,000 tons of alumina per day, 350 d/yr. The estimated operating cost is approximately $475 per ton of alumina. This is substantially higher than a comparable estimated operating cost for the Bayer process of $250 per ton of alumina. The proposed process does not appear economically attractive, even as a method to modify a current Bayer processing plant to use a kaolinitic clay feed. High capital costs and high energy requirements make the process prohibitively expensive.

This Bureau of Mines report discusses tests conducted with four different catalytic reactor designs to determine the influences of exhaust treatment systems on emissions from diesel engines. Although there was significant differences in oxidation efficiencies at light to intermediate engine loads, all four catalysts were very effective in reducing emissions at heavy loads. Compositional determinations included carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, unburned hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, aldehydes, sulfur dioxide, sulfates, and particulate loading. Particulate size, exhaust odor intensity, and the character of the unburned hydrocarbon component were also determined.

This two-part article reports the orientation of the renewed research efforts, beginning with an update on accident data analysis, the role of multiple causes in these accidents, and the search for practical methods for addressing the most important causes. Fatal haulage accidents most often involve loss of control or collisions caused by a variety of factors. Lost-time injuries most often involve sprains or strains to the back or multiple body areas, which can often be attributed to rough roads and the shocks of loading and unloading. Part II will describe research to reduce these accidents, including improved warning systems, shock isolation for drivers, encouraging seatbelt usage, and general improvements to system and task design.

The Bureau of Mines studied the problems caused by airborne contaminants from welding exhaust in surface mining operations and investigated equipment designed to reduce existing hazards. Four commercially available welding-fume exhaust units were tested to determine their effectiveness. Results indicated that the four units had the capability of controlling airborne particulate concentrations and bringing them to within allowable exposure limits.
