The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the fifth of a series of reports giving the results of studies by countless under part (1) of the investigation. (See appendix.) This report covers Westmoreland County, Pa., which comprises parts of New Kensington, Freeport, Elders Ridge, Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Latrobe, New Florence, Johnstown, Brownsville, Connellsville, Donegal, and Somerset quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A short resume" of the chemical and carbonizing properties of the coals are included. Data on the coal beds in this county were obtained from mining companies, land companies, individual landowners, and other sources of authentic information. A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds up to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps. Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

The Bureau of Mines studied single - step catalytic vapor - phase hydrogenation of oils derived from coal and oil shale . Treatment of middle oil , from hydrogenation of bituminous coal , gave good yields of gasoline with a German - made molybdenum- zinc - chromium catalyst . The Bureau also achieved good results with duplicates of this catalyst made from domestic raw materials . In one set of experiments with the German catalyst , 38 to 52 wt pct of feed was converted to gasoline . The total liquid product was 91 to 98 wt pct of the feed . Not all this gasoline can be claimed as production , however , because about 20 pct of the feed was in the gasoline range , and part of it undoubtedly survived the hydrocracking treatment . Hydrogenation of crude shale oil in the presence of cobalt molybdate catalyst produced a total liquid product of 89 wt pct of feed . The hydrogenation converted 27 wt pct of feed to gasoline and 44 wt pct of feed to diesel fuel . The remaining liquid product , 18 wt pct of feed , was residue boiling above diesel fuel . The gasoline was of poor quality , with an octane number of 39.1 . The overall product seemed a suitable feed stock for a conventional refining operation . Coker distillate hydrogenation , using a cobalt molybdate catalyst , gave a total liquid product of 97 vol pct of feed ; of this product 60 vol pct was jet fuel and 40 vol pct was diesel fuel . The extraction and recovery of nitrate from waste solutions generated in the production of titanium were investigated using solvent extraction techniques. Laboratory studies and continuous tests in a small solvent-extraction system showed that up to 98 percent of the nitrate can be selectively extracted by a solution of tributyl phosphate in kerosine. The extracted nitrate can be recovered as nitric acid, at concentrations suitable for reuse, by stripping the loaded organic with water.

A small, annular-retort gasifier having a nominal capacity of 40 pounds of lignite per hour was designed and constructed at the Lignite Experiment Station, Grand Forks, N. Dak. The purpose of the investigation was to increase the capacity of an annular-retort gasifier by better temperature distribution in the heating chamber (adjacent to the annulus) and by supplemental internal heating with controlled amounts of air. Correct control of air admission should yield crude ammonia-synthesis gas having a (H2+CO)-N2 ratio of 3. Dakota Star stoker-size lignite was used during the exploratory experimental program. The effects of temperature level and distribution in the heating chamber and of addition of air to the reactor were investigated. Hydrogen - carbon monoxide ratios ranged from 1.9 to 2.5, and (H2+C0)-N2 ratios were as low as 2.9. Hourly gas production ranged from 970 to 2,580 cu. ft., or 62.0 to 164 cu. ft. per sq. ft. of heated surface, or 350 to 940 cu. ft. per cu. ft. of reactor volume. Data from the small gasifier could be readily correlated with those previously obtained in the commercial-scale unit under comparable experimental conditions.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the remaining lode gold endowment of eight mining districts in Alaska using historic production data. A log-arithmic model of cumulative tonnage of ore processed versus cumulative grade was applied to the following districts: Chichagof, Fairbanks, Homer, Hope-Seward, Juneau, Ketchikan, Prince William Sound, and Willow Creek. To assess the remaining endowment, a computerized production data base was compiled from Bureau records. These data were aggregated in 5-yr intervals for each district. Data were sorted in order of declining grade, and log cumulative grade was plotted against log cumulative tonnage. Linear regression was performed on the data for each district. The linear equation for each curve was used to predict remaining endowment at a limiting mining grade. Based on conservative extrapolation of the grade-tonnage curves, a substantial total endowment of 8,415,100 tr oz of gold remains in the eight districts. The districts with the greatest remaining endowment are the Juneau, Chichagof, Fairbanks, and Willow Creek Districts.

This Bureau of Mines report presents several factors that currently enter into the design, manufacture, and testing of windows and lenses used in explosion-proof enclosures. Emphasis is also given to the sealing concepts for lenses. Criteria for adhesives and sealants are suggested based on the survivability of an explosion-proof enclosure as a structure, rather than upon the minimum material properties of its constituents. Procedures for surface preparation of adherends are also discussed.

With the national focus on energy, the combustible fraction of urban refuse is being extensively considered as a fuel supplement for coal in the generation of heat and power. The objective of these analytical studies by the Bureau of Mines was to determine the concentration of major, minor, and trace elements in the combustible fractions collected at various locations in the Bureau's urban refuse recycling pilot plant located at College Park, Md. The samples processed through the plant were submitted by various municipalities that are considering resource recovery as an alternative to landfill or other means of disposal. Twenty-five elements were determined in samples from six geographic areas and were compared with element concentrations found in typical coal samples.

The number of petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline during 1954, and according to the Bureau of Mines annual survey there were 326 refineries with a total daily throughput capacity of 8,420,630 barrels, as of January 1, 1955. The increase in capacity for the year was 413,733 barrels daily, while the number of refineries declined 11. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1954 from 23,759 barrels daily to 25,830. Breaking down the crude-oil capacity increase, by refining districts; 32 percent was installed at refin¬eries located in the Texas Gulf Coast district, 25 percent in the East Coast district, and 13 percent in both the Louisiana Gulf Coast and the California districts. The Appalachian No. 1, Texas Inland, and New Mexico refining districts reported declines in capacity during the year. Additional crude-oil capacity under construction, January 1, 1955, totaled 146,800 barrels daily. Included in this total are 4 new refineries, 1 each in California, Minnesota, New Mexico, and Washington. In addition to the' new facilities, equipment producing 1.49,550 barrels daily is being replaced.

This report is a compilation of results of preliminary concentration tests of seven manganese-ore samples. Six of the seven samples were submitted through the Mining Division, and 1 from Mexico was submitted by H. A. Doerner, formerly chief metallurgist, Region III. These investigations were made to assist development of mineral resources and particularly to aid economical exploitation of marginal or complex ores, from which strategic or critical minerals may be recovered.

An investigation of hazardous surface openings of abandoned and inactive underground mines in the Black Hills area of South Dakota has revealed: (1) tracing legal ownership of mineral claims via county courthouses is confusing, complex, and oftentimes misleading, (2 ) in general, the selected mine openings in this investigation are to be considered relatively high in risks and hazard potential which poses a threat to the general public, (3) mine closure procedures and designs can generally be categorically implemented depending on the overall situation of the particular mine opening with subsequent unit costs' estimates, (4) few preventive state or federal legal measures exist to date concerning mine closures, and (5) liability damages relating to mine opening accidents usually involve expensive and complex common law cases.

The Bureau of Mines has compiled pipeline mileage every 5 years since 1926, with the exception of the war period 1941 to 1949. The present survey has been made to reflect the progress under mobilization of the petroleum pipeline industry where efforts have been made by the government to stimulate construction of those facilities that would best equip the nation for a possible major emergency. This report summarizes the total mileage change 1n petroleum pipelines for 1950 through 1952. In order to increase the value of the information gathered the reporting companies were requested for the first time to report not only the net change in mileage as formerly, but also all new and used pipe laid and the total taken up. This new information permits effective appraisal of the construction effort of the industry and relates it to steel requirements.

Radioactivity, the property of radium that led to its isolation more than 30 years ago, is the characteristic that makes it of value in the treatment of disease. Tyler3 gives the following brief history of the investigation: The way to the discovery of radium was opened in 1895 by Rontgen, who found that the glow from a Crooke's tube contained penetrating rays, which .he called X rays. Prof. Henri Bequerel, while investigating the effect of various phosphor¬ escent substances, found that uranium salts produced photographic impressions even when enveloped with opaque substances. To Marie Sklovouski, a young Polish student, who later became Madame Curie, Professor Bacquerel delegated the task of learning how and why uranium possessed power to emit these peculiar rays, which he had proved to be electrical in character. Madam Curie, examining by electri¬ cal methods the radioactivity of a large number of minerals containing uranium and thorium, discovered that some specimens of pitchblende had about four times the activity of the metal uranium; that chalcolite, the crystallized phosphate of copper and uranium, was twice as active as uranium; that autunite, a phosphate of calcium and uranium, was quite as active as the same weight of pure uranium. In order to check these discoveries, she prepared chalcolite artificially, starting with pure products, but found that this artificial chalcolite had only the acti¬ vity represented by its composition, or, roughly, 40 per cent of the activity of uranium. This led to the conclusion that there was some element or substance in the residue from uranium minerals that possesses a high degree of activity. After an exhaustive chemical investigation of pitchblende from Joachimsthal, she found that this mineral contained not only uranium but also another radioactive sub¬ stance, to which she gave the name of polonium, in honor of her native land. Later in 1898, Monsieur and Madame Curie found still another element, which, when brought to a state of concentration, was several million times as active as uranium, and to this was given the name of radium. Debierne afterwards found a fifth radio¬ active substance, actinium; and in 1906 Boltwood isolated the metal ionium. Strict¬ ly pure radium chloride was first produced in 1902. The first radium was produced commercially from the uranium residues obtained from the mines of Joachimsthal, Bohemia. Tyler calls to attention that, as the ores were a government monopoly, search was begun at once for sources in other parts of the world. As a result, radium-containing ores have been found in about 10 countries.

Data regarding the composition and physical properties of Florida land-pebble phosphate-waste slime are presented, and the feasibility of dewatering and beneficiating the slime by several different methods is discussed. Chemical analyses, electron micrographs, and X-ray diffraction data showed that principal constituents of the slime included quartz, attapulgite, and flaorapatite. Viscosity of the slime changed with pH; thixotropic, Newtonian, and rheopectic states were observed as the pH increased. Use of various flocculating agents was not effective in improving thickening properties of the slime. Dewatering tests using pressure filtration showed that temperature influenced the filtration rate more than pressure; the filtration rate at 165° C was tenfold that at room temperature. Selective flotation of the slime, using two different processes, gave promising results. About 25 pct of the phosphate was recovered in a concentrate assaying 31 pct P205, Other tests demonstrated that the slime could be successfully fractionated at 20-microns using a hydrocyclone. In hydrometallurgical tests about 80 pct of the phosphorus and alumina were chemically extracted from the slime using sulfuric acid. Limited bacteriological studies made of the slime showed that several types of microorganisms were present and grew in the material despite the presence of fluorine-bearing minerals.

Accurate measurements of physical dimensions of a section of stainless steel capillary tubing are presented and used to develop two final working equations for an absolute gas viscosimeter. The effects of pressure and temperature on these dimensions are considered. The internal surface finish and nonuniformity of the capillary bore are discussed, as well as entrance, kinetic energy, gas slippage, and gas compressibility correction factors.

The mining industry of the United States has for many years possessed the dubious aistinction of having the poorest accident rate of all of the major lines of industrial endeavor in this country, and until recently there ras little or nothing to show that any material improvement might be expected. However, there are now numerous trends indicating that the corner has ceen turned at last, and it is strongly hoped that the mining industry is likely to follow the railroads, the cement and other industries in operating with occurrence of only a reasonable amount of loss of life and limb through accidents. The complete accident figures for metal and nonmetallic mineral mining for 1931 are not yet available, but fragmentary data shor that 1831 vill un- questionably have very low accident rates, probably the lowest in the history of our metal mines. One underground metal mine has produced over 14,000,000 tons of copper ore rithout a fatality; another metal mining company with an electric slovel operation has handled upwards of 75,000,000 tons of material, copper ore and waste, without the occurrence of a fatality; an iron-ore compan, which orns six mines (three underground, three open pit), has operated every one for a year or more without a lost-time accident with a con- siderable number of employees and a large production; and alot.er iron-ore producer with 30 mines and about 3,000 employees as an average of nearly 10 months of operation in 1931 without a lost-time accident. umerous other wonderful safety records of metal mines in 1931 indicate unmistaimbly tat the record of the noncoal mining industry of the United States as a role in 1931 will undoubtedly be found to be excellent. This report summarizes all work performed under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract J0377014, "Development and Evaluation of Noise Control Techniques for Taconite Processing Equipment." Three areas of taconite processing equipment, grinding mills, fine screens, and crusher screens have been investigated. Extensive noise and vibration measurements have been made on grinding mills in which the process parameters that affect mill noise have been identified, and the level of shell impact noise around the mill defined. A multiplexing telemetry system was used to obtain shell vibration measurements from a rotating mill. Mill noise control methods were investigated and a partial mill barrier was built and tested on a semi-autogeneous mill. A noise reduction of approximately 3 to 6 dBA was achieved on the falling side of the mill. The use of rubber mill liners on autogenous mills has been evaluated. The noise sources on fine screens have been quantified, and noise control treatments developed. Noise reductions of 11 to 13 dBA were achieved at positions around the fine screen and some in-service testing has been done. Noise measurents of crusher screens were obtained and noise control through resilient screen decks appears to hold the most promise. Additional benefits might be lower life-cycle cost, since the service life of resilient decks is claimed to be longer than steel.

Resistivity, porosity, permeability, and saturation data were obtained on core samples from the Big Injun, Clinton, Gordon, Bradford Second and Third, and Venango Second oil sands and formation factor-porosity relationships were derived using the general form of Archie's equation F = aø-m, where F is the formation factor, ø is the porosity, and a and m are constants that depend on characteristics of the rock. It was found that a and m varied significantly between sands, as did the exponent in the Archie relation I = Sw-n, where I is the resistivity index and S, is the water saturation. The average exponent, n, determined from all data was 50 percent greater at residual oil saturation than at residual water saturation. Samples from each sand exhibited differences in directional resistivity and/or permeability. The Bradford Third sand data showed correlation between resistivity and permeability anisotropy.
