The u.s. Bureau of Mines investigated electrode designs for electrowinning lead metal from a LiCl-KCl-PbCI2 electrolyte at 4500 C. The major objective of this investigation was to decrease the energy requirement for lead electrowinning. Electrolysis was performed in a bench-scale cell using several graphite electrode assemblies. Such parameters as electrode spacing, current density, and chlorine gas removal from the anode were investigated in the bench-scale tests. An optimum electrode assembly, termed the sawtooth design, was scaled up and operated at 3,000 and 4,000 A. The sawtooth electrodes operating at 3,000 A produced lead for 0.66 kW·h/kg. The electrodes were constructed by cutting large triangular grooves in the electrode surfaces. The electrodes were placed together such that the triangular peaks of one electrode projected into the triangular valleys of the other electrode. Chlorine did not build up on the anode with the sawtooth electrodes.

A field test was conducted to demonstrate and quantify the relationship between deep cutting and the creation of airborne respirable dust for longwall mining With a double-ended ranging drum shearer. The testing program was carried out on the 3 North longwall of North American Coal Company's Quarto No. y mine in Claringten, Ohio. Continuous recordings of the dust levels were made at both the midface and tail ate areas. Data were collected during 27 shifts during which time 81 complete mining, cycles took place. Both drum speed and the number of picks per line were varied systematically during the testing program to alter the depth of cut while the production rate was held constant by maintaining a constant haulage speed. The test results indicated that at the midface position, airborne respirable dust was strongly dependent upon the depth of cut as influenced by both the drum speed and number of picks. Drum speed had a much stronger effect than number of picks over the experimental range, since a halving of drum speed reduced dust levels by approximately 60 percent while removal of every other vane pick resulted in only a 2.1 percent reduction at constant production. At the tailgate position, however, neither effect was strongly apparent. A tendency for the slower drum speeds to he associated with reduced power consumption and higher haulage speeds (and therefore production rates) was also noted. It is recommended that longwall operators oper¬ate at the lowest available drum speed wherever possible.

Ingersoll-Rand Research, T n c and the Lee-Norse Co. built a Bureau of Mines sponsored, special deep cutting continuous miner under this contract to study the effects of rotational speed and depth of cut on airborne respirable dust. After preliminary tests indicated and later verified that deep cutting - low rotational speed reduces airborne respirable dust, a series of underground tests were performed (9 combinations of rotational speed and depth of cut at 45° bit angle and 4" bit spacing). Additional data was obtained on specific energy, coal sizing and noise. The conclusions reached from the tests results were; a) deep cutting reduces airborne respirable dust generated and specific energy needed to cut coal., b) the greater majority of the decrease occurs in going from 1" to 2" depth of cut, c) lowering rotational speed has a particularly sizable effect of reducing the amount of dust at the operator's location, d) no significant relationship was found for either noise level or coal sizing to rotational speed or depth of cut. Recommendations include. a)) use of specific energy as an indicator of the change in dust level correlating to changes in cutting parameters, b) mine operators should acquire new deep cutting machines., since retrofitting would be selective.

The land mass of the Asia and Pacific region comprises 11 million square miles or about 15% of the total Earth's land area. The bulk of the region is contained on the Asian continental land mass. Australia, the world's largest island or the world's smallest continent, alone is almost as large as the continental United States. The islands of New Zealand, New Guinea, Borneo, Sumatra, and Honshu are among the largest in the world. Collectively, they constitute a land area of 1.1 million square miles or an area about one-fourth the size of the United States. The countries in the Asia and Pacific region represent some of the most vibrant economies in the world. Japan is undisputed as one of the world's leaders in manufacturing and commerce. Hong Kong and Singapore are significant both as entrepôt and banking centers. The economies of Australia, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan compare favorably to the level of the industrialized countries in western Europe. Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand have maintained strong economic growth during the past two decades. All these countries in the Asia and Pacific region collectively constitute a significant bloc as to raw materials production and consumption, as to manufacturing, and as to world trade.

Data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has shown that roof bolting machine (RBM) operators are the second most likely type of underground mining machine operator to be are over exposed to noise, per the MSHA Permissible Exposure Limit. In response to this, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has initiated a project to develop engineering noise controls for roof bolting machines. Key to this research is an evaluation of the duty cycle of a typical roof bolting machine operation and this paper presents the results of such an exercise for data collected at two cooperating coalmines. The evaluation entails a time motion study of an operators' shift, logging each activity for time (e.g., tramming the machine, drilling holes, installing the roof bolt, etc.) and the noise levels associated with each task with a Larson Davis Spark 705+ dosimeter. NIOSH post processed the data to determine which tasks the operator devotes the most time to and the noise dosage accumulated during those tasks. These results provide insight into which portion of the operators' duty cycle is the most prominent contributor to noise exposure and thus, where research activities for the development of engineering noise controls should be focused. It was determined that the task of drilling holes is the most significant source of the operators' noise exposure and project research has focused on engineering noise controls to reduce the noise emissions generated during the drilling portion of the machine duty cycle.

This report and associated deliverables is the culmination of a comprehensive literature survey, data collection and identification of over 500 metal/nonmetal active mines/mills/smelters (over 50,000 tons per year, TPY, production) in the contiguous 48 states. The main purpose was to compile an inventory of the mine/ mill/smelter waste tonnages, thus forming a data base for future research and development in improving waste management and waste disposal techniques in the metal/nonmetal mining industry. The study specifically excluded sand and gravel, sulfur, granite and any commodity that leaves basically no waste when mined and/or milled. The coal waste inventory is the subject of another report. The study provided for locating, mapping. encodating and digitizing all the mine/mill/smelter information made available throughout the nation as well as the climatological, land use, topographical, ecological and vegetative data. Mine/mill/smelter information also included (where possible) acreage and/or volume, mining methods, primary ore and gangue minerals, waste composition and haulage methods and distance hauled. Finally, a discussion is provided concerning present and potential uses of various types of tailings, as well 8S recommending possible R&D in addressing problem areas in waste disposal techniques and management.

This report presents a study of the Cooper sand of the Fork Run pool of Warren and McKean Counties, Pa., and a prediction of the secondary oil recovery by gasflooding the reservoir. A computer program employing a modification of the Craig, Geffen, and Morse secondary recovery calculation was used to make the gas flood performance forecast and is presented in the appendix. The Cooper sand reservoir in the Fork Run pool lies at a depth of about 1,900 feet and covers an area 1/2 mile wide by 2-1/4 miles long. Original oil in place is estimated to have been 8,266,000 STB. The primary recovery mechanism is solution gas drive, and ultimate primary recovery may reach 20 percent over a well life of 90 years. Two computer predictions were made for gas flooding the Cooper reservoir. The first was for a 25-acre pilot five-spot utilizing existing wells, but project economics were poor since only 25 percent of injection gas is utilized for pilot oil recovery. Recovery was 71,000 STB, or 22 percent of oil in place at flood initiation, but required 25,700 scf gas injected per STB of oil recovered. In the second prediction, pilot area performance was projected for the entire Fork Run pool, and economics became good. Recovery was 1,753,000 STB from 25 five-spots after the injection of only 6,400 scf per STB of oil recovered.

At the Twin Cities "lining Research Center (TCMRC) a project is underway to determine how varying the parameters of a coal-cutting process would affect the amount and the size distribution of the generated dust. The cutting parameters being investigated are the cutting speed, depth of cut and shape of the cutting, tool. To accomplish this research ft is necessary to collect and transport the coal dust venerated at the cutting tool to measuring instruments for analysis. The purpose of this contract was to develop and deliver a system of instruments for measuring the size distributions of the generated coal dust. The instruments employed are essentially those developed for particulate air pollution measurements (1, 2). The instrument system covers a particle size range of 0.005 to 20 microns and is capable of performing in situ measurement and presenting data in real time.

(ADL) on behalf of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center (PMSRC), on Contract H0122026 (which began in August of 1971). Under this contract ADL provided technical assistance to the Bureau on a task basis on virtually all aspects of the Bureau's programs related to present and planned emergency and operational communications and miner location systems for underground coal mines. The work consisted of independent investigations, analyses, experiments, breadboard and prototype hardware development, workshops and technology transfer seminars on mine communications, and on-going evaluations and guidance related to the Bureau's contracted programs on electromagnetic noise, mine communications systems, and trapped miner location. This final report documents the work in two volumes, Volume I, "Emergency and Operational Mine Commun¬ications," and Volume II, "Seismic Detection and Location of Isolated Miners." The Tables of Contents of both Volumes are included in each Volume.

Introduction The blasting capabilities of commercial explosives are often rated according to their loading densities and detonation velocities. Both the density and velocity are relatively easily measured, the values of which can be used for determining the approximate detonation pressure developed by an explosive during any given set of blasting conditions (1-5). Knowledge of the actual rate of detonation attained at all points along a charger's length also is considered to give a good indication of how well the explosive is functioning. Many factors affect the density and velocity and have been thoroughly discussed by various authors (4, 6-12). For recording velocities several methods are available, but the resistance-wire, or probe, continuously recording technique has the distinct advantage of providing a record of the complete progress of an explosive reaction from the time it first initiates. Figure 1 is a copy of a typical record obtained by the procedure with certain significant information indicated. The theory and applications of the method are extensively covered in the literature so need not be reviewed for this report (13-18). Only the specific equipment and procedure employed for this investigation are presented.

These data are required for use in the design of new emergency and operational communication systems. This work, and the follow-on coordination and guidance activities of ADL on this noise measurement program in subsequent phases of the contract, are treated in Part One of Volume I.

[Study and development of sensing techniques and sensors were performed to aid shuttle car drivers in detecting, obstacles and in guiding the car along the face haulage route. Microwave, acoustic, and optical sensing techniques were considered as part of the feasibility study for obstacle detection. Various guidance techniques, including wire-following and rib-ranging were investigated. Active optical sensing was selected for obstacle detection to obtain the bear overage and sharp angular cutoff characteristics required within the packaging limitations defined by the shuttle car configuration. Rib-ranging guidance was selected to achieve completely self-contained shuttle car system which responds to the mine geometry without need for wires, stripes, or other path defining devices. Extensive hybrid computer simulation runs were performed to valuate various guidance techniques during the feasibility study. Subsequent simulation rues were performed to establish parameter values for the rib-ranging guidance system. The obstacle detection and guidance system was designed, fabricated and installed on a standard shuttle car. The system satisfied all applicable permissibility requirements of Schedule 2G. An experimental permit was issued to Bendix for operation in an underground coal mine. System evaluation tests were performed first above ground at the Bendix Research Laboratories. The simulation model was validated by these runs. Final testing wan performed underground in an operating mine with an experienced shuttle car driver. All sensors successfully demonstrated Chi predicted performance capability during underground face haulage tests. Dust did not Impair system performance and lens cleaning was not required during working shifts. Further development is required to achieve the desired obstacle detection performance Closed loop steering control with manual override is recommended o: mended for the lateral guidance e system. The guidance system should be an invaluable aid to low-coal shuttle car drivers where continuous mining machines are utilized.]

MORE THAN 30 MILLION EMPLOYEES each year are exposed to hazardous occupational noise, and approximately one-third of them develop permanent hearing loss (NSC, 2000). Possible explanations for the latter statistic include worker regard for noise as a mere nuisance rather than as an occupational safety and health hazard, and consequent neglect of established protective measures (e.g., hearing protection); lack of knowledge concerning noise; improper use of hearing protection; worker indifference; and inadequate training (Bauer & Babich, 2004). Many drill rigs generate high sound levels, which vary according to the type of machine, its location with respect to the physical surroundings, and the location of the sound measured around the rig. A NIOSH study measured noise output from several types of drill rigs during field investigations (Ingram & Matetic, 2003). Two types of data were recorded the actual noise generated by the drill rig at various positions around the rig and the noise to which the drill operator was exposed during the drilling cycle. For the latter, sound level measurements up to 120 dBA were recorded while hammering casing (metal on metal) in drilling a water well (Photo 1). Several types of administrative controls exist to address worker exposure to loud drill rig noise. Rotating duties to decrease exposure time and posting warning signs in high-noise work areas are two such controls. Another is the use of hearing protection. Worker use of hearing protection has been disappointing, however. One study by the University of Michigan found that construction workers used earplugs and earmuffs only between 36% and 61% of the time that they were necessary (Lusk & Kerr, 1998). In a 2001 study, OSHA reported a relatively low rate of 30.4% for use of earplugs among construction workers (Walker, 2001). Why are rates for hearing protection use so low? One explanation may be workers' lack of concern for noise in the workplace. They expect workplace noise to be a loud and in¬ evitable nuisance and, therefore, accept it as part of the job. As a result, they disregard proven measures that can protect their hearing. Other workers may use hearing protection, but do so improperly. They may misguidedly remain in high-noise areas for extended periods thinking they are protected when in fact they are not. Other reasons for low use and/or misuse of hearing protection include poor education, lack of awareness and inadequate training (Nash, 2003). To address the training issue, NIOSH developed two exercises from which drillers can learn about noise, hearing loss and hearing protection. "Introduction In studying the mine disaster files of the Bureau of Mires for preparation of a bulletin on coal-mine explosions, a table was compiled covering various features of fan installations and the handling of air currents at the time of and after the disasters. As a sidelight on this discussion, there was tabulated the loss of life and number of men injured.Discussion of collected dataOf the 164 disasters tabulated, 148 were explosions, 14 were fires, and 2 involved both fire and explosion. The total loss of life was 4,158 and 412 were injured. There were 145 disasters in bituminous coal mines, 13 in anthratice mines, 2 in lignite mines, 1 in a cannel coal nine, and 3 in metal mines. By States, 35 took place in Pennsylvania; 17 in West Virginia; 16 in Oklahoma and Alabama; 15 in. Kansas and Illinois; 12 in Indiana; 7 in Colorado; 6 in Kentucky; 3 each in Ohio Tennessee and Wyoming; 2 each in Arkansas, Montana, Washington, Virginia, New Mexico and Utah and 1 each in Iowa, Missouri, Maryland, and California."

During the period 1979 thru 1982, Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining research program at the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and. the results are described in this report.

This report3/ gives the results of a reconnaissance of mining districts in Eureka County, Nevada, made from September 25 to October 20 and from October 27 to November 5, 1577. During this time, virtually all the districts were visited and many data obtained on active and inactive properties. This report covers the locations of the various districts, geological background, ownership and brief descriptions of mines and prospects, information on past and current operations, and, other data likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. From the viewpoint of past production in the county, the silver-lead-gold deposits at Eureka have been tie most important, followed by the silver deposits at Cortez and Mineral Hill. The period of greatest activity in the foregoing districts was from 1870 to 1990, when Eureka was one of the principal mining areas in Nevada; the production of lead was sufficient to affect its price in all the commercial centers of the world. Eureka also merits the distinction of being the birthplace of the silver-lead smelting industry in the United States.

A method is presented for the burial of potentially toxic spoil in high density zones or packages within spoil piles. Such burial could reduce the outflow of pollutants and thus minimize contamination of groundwater flows. Laboratory model studies using ammonium bromide tracer were performed to quantify the expected outflow mixing that could be achieved through package construction in spoils. Field drilling and geophysical density logging of spoils was carried out at three sites in Pennsylvania and Ohio to obtain a range of field spoil bulk density measurements and spoil samples. These data are analyzed to determine the relationships between spoil density and the controlling factors of lithology, depth, age, particle size distribution and mining method. A separate series of spoil permeability tests were performed in the laboratory to investigate the relationship between permeability and its related parameters. Research results are applied to the toxic package method to suggest guidelines for pack-age size, shape, density and placement for future field prototype development.
