The purpose of the cut is to provide a free face to which the remainder of a development or breasting round can break. The results of field testing in drifts and at a quarry face were used as a basis for a description of the rock breakage and flushing mechanism in the cut. It was concluded that the important features of a cut design are proper hole spacing, sufficient relief volume, drilling accuracy and relief holes slightly longer than the planned length of the round. The void space provided by the relief holes should be about 15% of the cut volume, with more required in weak, highly fissured rocks. The importance of drilling accuracy increases with round length, an error being magnified by the small blasthole spacing. The first hole pulls only about 20% of the round length, 4-6 holes having to be fired before the cut is pulled close to its design depth. The first four blastholes should be fired with a minimum inter-hole delay of 100 ms to provide progressive relief of burden and avoid the superimposition of ground vibrations. The earliest-firing charge should be closest to the relief area and act laterally, while the first of the vertically-fired charges to be detonated should be the uppermost. Synthesis report on a project carried out under the EC-funded BRITE-EURAM programme. A prototype high-resolution electromagnetic system, based on the theory of controlled-source magnetotellurics, was developed. The electrical source field is fed into the earth by dipoles at preselected frequencies and a multi-channel receiver measures five electric and three orthogonal magnetic fields. Suitable mapping algorithms and spatial filters are applied to the data and a new technique permits calibration during measurement. The system was field tested over a blind orebody, at 250-550 m depth, in the Aguas Tenidas area of the Iberian Pyrite Belt. Ten lines totalling 12 000 m of profile length were completed in seven days and the orebody was identified. Tests in the Irish Midlands suffered from strong electromagnetic interference of cultural origin

The integrated approach combines a powerful ground movement prediction program with a knowledge-based expert system. ESDAS (Expert Structural Damage Assessment System) was developed to evaluate mining subsidence damage in the form of risk and in terms of the three vital contributing components (mining factors, site factors and structural factors). Using a certainty factor risk assessment technique, the system can be used to predict the likely damage to a particular structure subjected to mining subsidence. A previously developed powerful ground movement prediction program, SWIFT (Subsidence With Influence Function Techniques), has been combined with the expert system to allow the mining factor to be more accurately determined in a broader range of mining layout. Since SWIFT can be calibrated to any particular coal field using local subsidence data, it is believed that the integrated system could be used in any coal field worldwide for the assessment and control of mining subsidence damage risks

A risk model for assessment of the uncertainty in the forecasts of the planned profit is developed. It is based on the selling price of the metal recovered from the ore and the production per shift of the excavators. These two critical variables characterise the economic and technical aspects of the mining venture. Time-series methodology is used to describe the behaviour of the economic variable, which improves the adequacy of the modelling. A hypothetical open-pit gold mine is used to illustrate the application of the model. Results obtained show that the model is a good alternative to sensitivity analysis in taking account of the stochastic character of the price of the metal recovered from the excavated ore and the production per shift of the excavators used. The robustness of the large-sections correction procedure, Hill's fast approximation, Barbery's correction and the PARGEN correction was examined by comparing their ability to reconstruct the true liberation distribution using sectioning data from computer-generated spheres. The results indicate that the flexibility of a correction procedure is related to the assumptions it makes about the continuity of the liberation distribution, locked-particle characteristics and ore texture. Overall, the large-sections procedure appeared to be the most generally applicable. The Hill fast approximation performed well, but this was probably because it partially incorporates the sphere model; the performance of the PARGEN and Barbery corrections varied from case to case.

Although other energy commodities have developed successful futures contracts, long-term contracts still dominate the coal market. To establish whether coal markets will develop in the same way, coal price and volume data are tested against a set of criteria considered to represent some of the factors contributing to the development of a successful futures contract. Coal meets only some of the criteria: market players are subject to little risk in quite a stable market, have strong preferences for the specific nature of long-term contracts and profit from product uniqueness, each trade being individually negotiated. Potential structural changes in the western European market are not felt to be sufficient to create demand for a coal futures contract, but an empirical model has been developed that could form the basis of a further study to predict the potential for success

Synthesis report on a project carried out under the EC-funded BRITE-EURAM programme. A large deposit in Spain and several smaller ones in Greece and Sweden were investigated. Beneficiation testwork, including the development of an innovative wet circuit, was undertaken in Italy. The Spanish Ilustracion deposit lies occurs in thin, white layers throughout a zone 35-40 m thick and 1.5 km long, in laminated calcsilicates. Total resources of more than 100 000 000 t include proven open-pittable reserves of 4 500 000 t averaging 35% wollastonite. The beneficiated product is suitable for various applications, including ceramics. The Swedish and Greek marble-hosted skarn deposits include Albatross, with 2 500 000 t of reserves at 30% wollastonite, and Panorama, with reserves estimated at more than 700 000 t

Chalcopyrite concentrate was flash-oxidised in a laminar-flow furnace in oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres that ranged in composition from N2 to N2 + 50 vol% O2. Gas pre-heating temperatures were 500-1100 degrees C and four particle-size fractions were studied: 28-38, 38-44, 44-62 and 62-74 micrometres. The effect of the residence time of the particles on sulphur removal was studied in the range 0.1-0.35 s. Scanning-electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive analysis and back-scattered electron analysis was used to determine the morphology and mineralogy of the reacted particles. Total desulphurisation was achieved under the most oxidising conditions. Particles were observed to undergo fragmentation during oxidation, the violence of this depending on the iron and sulphur contents and the original particle-size fraction. The melting and/or reaction stages of the particles under different conditions were studied in powder samples. Polished sections were examined to follow the development of porosity and the mineralogy of the particles. A model for the fragmentation process is described

Non-contact systems for measuring underground voids have used theodolites, reflective or non-reflective laser methods and sonar techniques. An effective but cheaper alternative is based on use of a Wild T1000 electronic theodolite coupled to a Leica Data DISTO and a Wild GRE3 data logger. The software used to process the theodolite data is a spreadsheet and macro combination, while Surpac, Datamine and AutoCAD modelling packages have been investigated for viewing the tunnel profiles. The main limitations were found to be blinding, when irregularities in the stope obstructed the line of sight, and the 30 m range of the Data DISTO model used in the study, although more powerful models are available. All three modelling packages proved suitable, with Surpac providing the best-quality printed images of the voids surveyed and AutoCad by far the cheapest alternative

The deposit was discovered during systematic reconstruction of the geological history of glacial overburden, which averages 6 m in thickness over 80% of Sweden, by geochemical sampling and searching for small grains of eroded bedrock. The gold is mainly concentrated in and around high-grade quartz veins within a broad shear zone, though the correlation coefficient between quartz and gold in samples is not significant. Production from two pits, now connected, in the Central and Eastern orebodies has increased steadily from 1 238 kg Au in 1989 to 2 120 kg in 1994, the highest in Europe. The mine has adapted and improved its mining methods to achieve significant productivity increases and cost reductions. Most of the improvements have been achieved through a better understanding of the controls on mineralisation and of the implications of those controls for selective mining. Geostatistics has played an important role in the quantification of grade variability and gold occurrence. Better blasting and loading techniques have improved selectivity, grade control has been enhanced by a grade-control drilling programme, and significant improvements in mineral processing have been made

Geomechanical factors at the mine are important and will become even more relevant as the pit expands and deepens. To address these demands a team was assembled to collect geomechanical information and perform numerical analysis. The west wall is the largest and flattest of all the design sectors in the pit and rigorous studies were carried out on this wall. The wall behaviour is controlled mainly by a set of steeply dipping joints within the slope in the Fortuna Granodiorite and a weak zone, the Zona Plastica, that extends vertically near the pit bottom. These features lead to large toppling displacements in the upper portions of the wall. Two numerical models were used to reproduce the general features of failure observed in the wall. The modelling indicated that a toppling mode of failure results from shear on the steeply dipping joints. The toppling leads to slumping or landslides whereby the west wall flows slowly downslope as the Zona Plastica compresses

Tool performance and the unit cost of cutting depend on a number of operational variables (peripheral velocity, pull-back force, water injection rate, angles of the sections of wire outside the rock) as well as on the geometric features of the cut itself (area and shape). Cutting rate and wire productivity are also influenced by the type and number of diamond beads per unit length of wire and by the characteristics of the rock (granite or marble). A computer program aimed at handling a problem of this complexity has been developed and tested with the use of available field and laboratory data and has been found acceptably reliable. Discrepancies between current industrial data and some of the results suggest future lines of research, while the simulation should also be extended to include different types of rock and tool and a variety of bench face geometries

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. The complex exemplifies a class of olivine-rich, platiniferous ophiolite complexes generated by unusually high degrees of hydrous melting above a subduction zone. Crystallisation of abundant olivine from unusually picritic magmas produced an exceptionally thick sequence of crustal dunite cumulates. Significant (1-4 ppm) concentrations of Pt+Pd occur where sulphide-bearing dunites are spatially associated with podiform chromite concentrations. In the area north of the Balta Sound, the chromitites appear to lie in distinct stratigraphic zones. A detailed programme of lithogeochemical and soil-rock interface geochemical exploration led to the intersection by diamond drilling of three stratiform horizons of sulphide-bearing dunites and associated precious-metal mineralisation. Patterns of cryptic geochemical layering, at scales from 200 m to less than 1 cm, suggests open-system fractionation

The relationship between support performance parameters and parameters representative of mining and roof conditions is characterised by uncertainty, non-linearity and dependence, so the theory of artificial neural networks was selected as a basis for shield design. A computer program based on a back-propagation training algorithm was written to derive the weighting factors between inputs and outputs from field data; once these had been established two mathematical models were developed to describe the relationship. Back-calculation of field data indicates that the results generated from the neural network models are much more accurate than those derived by traditional methods and can be used with a higher level of confidence. The support density, possible yield frequency of face supports and interval of periodic roof weighting under specific mining and roof conditions can be determined by application of the models

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Oxygen isotope analysis indicates that quartz, carbonates and muscovite could all have formed in near-isotopic equilibrium with the mildly saline H2O-CO2 ore fluid at 330 degrees C. Calculated values for O, C and S in the ore fluids imply derivation from a deep, homogeneous source region and are consistent with formation either as a direct or an indirect result of igneous processes. Values for delta-O18 plot a little outside the accepted magmatic range, but have almost certainly been modified by exchange reactions with wall rocks. These reactions were also the most likely cause of deposition of the ore constituents. The chemical and isotopic character of the fluid was similar to that in many Archaean and later mesothermal auriferous vein systems, especially the Mother Lode region of California.
