Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). The compilation of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation aerial gamma-ray data to produce maps of the apparent surface concentrations of potassium, uranium and thorium for the conterminous USA has resulted in a reasonably accurate representation of the distribution of these elements in the surface rocks and soils. The greenstone belt developed along the Sandawana line, an anastomosing, transcrustal shear zone. The lode gold is concentrated in veins and along brittle-ductile shear zones and other faults. Gold contents of 200 rock samples were found to be well below economically significant levels, excluding purely syngenetic deposit formation. Average gold content of unmineralised banded iron formation decreases from 7.3 ppb in the east (Manica) to 1.6 ppb in the west (Odzi), where depletion reflects hydrothermal leaching. The mineralising fluids may have been generated during deep crustal deformation, metamorphism and magmatism. Gold was hydrothermally deposited during carbonatisation and sericitisation of ultramafic and mafic rocks and during hydrothermal overprinting of banded iron formation and felsic rocks. It is present in native form and as microscopic to submicroscopic inclusions in pyrite, arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite. Argentiferous galena and other sulphides are commonly observed. Rezende, which produced over 38 t Au, is hosted by a granodiorite stock. By-product gold was produced from Cu-Ni sulphides at Mundonguara. The deposits are related to the older, but not the younger, of the granitoids intruding the belt's supracrustal sequences; the estimated age of mineralisation is 2700-2600 Ma. Odzi district, with 61 mines, has produced only 3.5 t Au as its higher-level host rocks have apparently been eroded. Mutare (formerly Umtali) district, with 133 mines and 9 placers, has produced 68 t Au (65 t from Rezende and adjacent deposits), and Manica district, with 23 mines and 8 placers, 12 t Au. Estimated reserves for the Rezende area are 20 t Au and for Manica district 4 t lode Au and 19 t placer Au

The domestic concentrate used by the Shanghai Meishan Metallurgical Corporation in Nanjing contains significant siderite, magnetite and haematite, the siderite having a substantial influence on its sintering behaviour. On the basis of experimental findings and published information it is proposed that siderite decomposition starts at c.400 degrees C and results in the formation of CO and/or H2, which then reduces the haematite to magnetite prior to the initiation of high-temperature sintering; inter-mixed particles of Australian haematite and pisolite ores also undergo significant reduction. As the gaseous reduction process is so effective, low-temperature forms of silico-ferrite of Ca and Al (SFCA) cannot form even at high sinter basicity. The bench-scale results were confirmed in a pilot-scale facility whose sinters consisted mainly of magnetite, high-temperature SFCA and glass, which is typical of sinters formed from mixes with high magnetite levels

Smelting of Cu anode slimes involves the use of a slag to hold the oxidised Cu, but some Ag is also inevitably oxidised to the slag. The solubility of Ag in sodium silicate slags at 1 100 and 1 150 degrees C has now been determined over a very wide range of oxygen partial pressures. Silver was found to be present in the slags both as neutral atoms and as AgO(0.5). The activity coefficient for atomic Ag was a very strong function of slag composition and temperature, whereas that for AgO(0.5) was much less affected by slag composition and was almost independent of temperature over the limited range examined. The results reveal that the dissolved Ag cannot be fully recovered by reduction of the slag with very reducing gases

A probe suitable for on-line measurements of gas hold-up in industrial flotation systems has been developed. It is based on an open cell for measurement of slurry-gas conductivity and a novel syphon cell for measurement of slurry-only conductivity. The desired behaviour of the two cells was demonstrated and estimates of gas hold-up were shown to be in good agreement with independent measurements. The gas hold-up probe was used as a diagnostic tool to assess the operation of flotation columns. Differences in gas hold-up between baffled sections in two industrial columns were detected

The application of simple methods of statistical analysis, coupled with geostatistical analysis and geographic information systems, can only summarise and give an outline of the spatial distribution of the parameters measured. Spatial analysis of the components or factors calculated, through principal component analysis or factor analysis, allows assessment of the geographical distribution of the dominant processes contributing to soil composition and/or contamination. Neither of these tools, however, distinguishes between the different sources of pollution. The application of canonical correlation to the data, driven by expert appraisal of the potential pollution sources, allows their quantitative and spatial assessment while GIS provides the environment in which to organise and present the results. The methodology is illustrated by its application to soil-contamination data from the Lavrio area in Greece, where silver-bearing orebodies have been mined for more than 25 centuries

Bangladesh ilmenite is partially altered, containing pseudorutile, rutile and haematite as well as the predominant ilmenite phase. A typical analysis is 39.45% TiO2, 24.19% FeO and 33.0% Fe2O3. Reduction of the ilmenite by charcoal was found to involve two major reactions: conversion of pseudorutile into ilmenite and rutile, and change of ilmenite into metallic iron and rutile. The first, which was much the faster reaction, was responsible for an initial increase in ilmenite content with reduction time at lower temperatures. Apart from these two major reactions, rutile was reduced to lower oxides at 1 100 degrees C with a consequent decrease in its XRD peak height

Laboratory strength and deformation testing of freshly blasted sandstone and claystone overburden from Jeebropilly colliery in Queensland and in-situ plate-bearing tests on four backfills of different ages showed that the bearing capacity of backfill is a function mainly of compaction, not of age. The modulus or stiffness of the backfill is significantly increased by previous loading, in some cases up to threefold. Backfill material experiences some compaction through the passage of mining vehicles, likely to provide a bearing capacity that will support normal construction activities; the limited testing performed suggested that completed backfills are capable of supporting loads of up to 200 kN/m2 while sustaining displacements acceptable for a wide range of residential and industrial uses, but may be susceptible to collapse settlements due to saturation in the long term

The rate of reaction between iron oxides and carbonaceous materials, agglomerated as pellets, was studied experimentally by measuring the weight loss as a function of time. The effects of temperature, carbon type, inert gas flow rate, pellet size and additions (sodium. carbonate and Portland cement) were determined. It was shown that the value of the apparent activation energy can display large deviations under different experimental conditions; in the present work it was found to be 226.6 kJ/mol. The reaction with coke is slower than with charcoal, and the rate increases as the flow of inert gas in the reaction vessel decreases. Comparison of the rates for pellets of different sizes has shown that for small pellets the initial rate is faster but that it slows down at high conversions owing to the penetration of inert gas into the pellet. Additions of sodium carbonate and Portland cement increase the rate; sodium. carbonate promotes the catalysis of the Boudouard reaction, which is the slowest of the partial reactions. The increase in the rate with Portland cement is attributed to the release of water vapour

An important conclusion of the study is that altering the properties of the granulation water is a practical way of improving the sintering performance of blends that contain porous ores, and more work is under way to investigate other additives. Previous studies of iron ore blends containing pisolite ore showed that losses in sintering productivity were a result of deteriorating green-bed permeability. Pisolite ores are extremely porous and absorb a proportion of the water added during granulation. Although increased water addition could be used to counteract losses in productivity, the current study examined methods of inhibiting water absorption by pisolite ore as a means of improving productivity. Additives were used to alter the properties of the granulating water. With no increase in mix moisture contents pilot-scale sintering studies showed that sugar-based additives gave productivities that are higher than those obtained for a comparable ore blend containing haematite rather than the pisolitic ore. Several techniques of adding the sugar to the sinter mix were examined and found to increase productivity to varying degrees. Theoretical considerations, in some cases supported by experimental results, indicate that sugar-based additives not only inhibited water absorption by porous ore particles but also improved the permeability of the sintering bed. The study also suggested that, contrary to some commonly held views, the highly reactive nature of Yandi ore from Western Australia is beneficial for sintering. Porous ores enabled the formation of a strong sinter at fast flame-front speeds-both good strength and a short sintering time are requirements for high-productivity operation

A floating gold dredge operating in coarse alluvial gravels of the Grey River on the west coast of the South Island, New Zealand, generated high concentrations of clay and colloidal particles in the dredge pond, which entered the groundwater system. Sampling was carried out at depths down to 20 m and it was found that variation of the length of the flow path occurred because of the movement of the dredge towards the piezometers. The alluvial gravels, the suspended sediments, the groundwater system and the water chemistry were all studied. Sediment concentrations were found to be highly variable with depth, but the relative concentrations in the depth profile were generally consistent as the flow distance shortened. The sediments were extremely fine and travelled further through the gravels than predicted. Comparison of field results with the available theory of deep filtration in clean beds of porous media gives some basis for estimating the behaviour of fine sediments in other alluvial systems

The South Nottinghamshire Area has not been greatly troubled by spontaneous combustion until the last few years, during which the Blackshale Seam has been developed and exploited. The problem was first encountered at a colliery which was heavily preoccupied with a major reconstruction scheme, and with the sudden appearance of a completely new hazard both men and management had to adapt themselves very quickly to meet the situation. The paper contributed to the Symposium by the South Nottinghamshire Area illustrates the problems by reference to actual incidents, and shows how the lessons learned from them have been applied to the shaping of future policy on the avoidance and treatment of spontaneous combustion.

DETA exhibits a highly selective depressant action on pyrrhotite without adversely affecting the collectorless flotability of pentlandite and chalcopyrite in nickel-copper ores of the Sudbury region. A simplified Eh-pH diagram has been constructed to illustrate the extended stability of elemental sulphur and to explain the collectorless flotation of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Cu and Ni ions, which are known to exist on the surface of pyrrhotite, promote the flotation of this mineral whether a collector is present or not. Thermodynamic calculations indicate that the action of DETA involves the sequestration of Cu and Ni ions from surfaces under a wide range of redox conditions; analysis of flotation test filtrate indicates as much as a 20-fold increase in the concentration of Ni and Cu ions. It appears that DETA may enhance the self-hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite and pentlandite by exposing more of the sulphur-rich surface sites for bubble contact in flotation. A thermodynamic analysis of the sulphation of rare-earth phosphates and the water-leaching of rare-earth sulphates was used to guide experimental work on the sulphation and leaching of concentrates from Pitinga. It was concluded that the sulphuric acid digestion of xenotime is technically feasible and could be used industrially to produce yttrium and other rare-earth oxides. Yttrium extractions of more than 90% were obtained by digestion at 503 K for 4 h at an acid:concentrate ratio of 2:1 with particle size -0.053 mm. The apparent activation energy at temperatures less than 473 K, as determined from the Arrhenius plot, was 11.0 kJ/mol, indicating that the reaction is controlled by the diffusion of the reactants or products through the sulphate layer

Errors in ore reserve estimation can occur during drilling and sampling, sample preparation and analysis, geological logging and modelling, database construction, statistical or geostatistical evaluation, selection of economic parameters, selection of ore reserve method and assessment of mining constraints. Core sample recovery can be a major source of error, and it is proposed that the modelling of grade, metal accumulation and thickness should be accompanied by the modelling of core recovery (or core loss) so that for each ore block a weighted block recovery factor is obtained. This gives a good indicator of the reliability of a reserve estimate. It is suggested that a resource reliability rating (RRR) system be established to quantify what is meant by geological assurance and to combine this with an estimate of the precision of estimation as gained by geostatistical analysis. Proven and probable minable reserves would be those with an RRR better than 50% and a precision of estimation better than 20%

A study was carried out which aimed to: determine the effects of blasting on excavation perimeters and nearby slopes; establish a low-cost blast monitoring and field observation programme to determine peak particle velocities and blast damage; and to develop criteria for observable blast damage that are based on the peak particle velocity. Full-scale production blasts in a large open pit copper mine were monitored and studied to develop damage criteria for various rock types. Better blast designs can be achieved by correlating the results of blast monitoring with field observations of damage at the pit walls and on benches. Back-break and damage are related to blast-induced ground vibration. Peak particle velocity is accepted as a reliable measure for the prediction of ground vibration levels. Empirical models for the estimation of rock damage can be developed and used for blast design. The models are used to determine the zones of damage within the rock face. Rock damage models can also be used to design trim shots to achieve further reduction of back-break in more critical areas
