Barite and Fe-Mn-oxide deposits that occur along faults in the Southern California Borderland formed by low-temperature hydrothermal processes. The Borderland region consists of block-faulted continental crust within the broad transform boundary of the North American plate. The fault-bounded basins are anoxic and partially filled with hemipelagic and turbidite sediments. Barite was collected from four dredges and a submersible dive (DSV4-355) in the southern California Borderland, and was collected from two sea-cliff sites along the Palos Verdes Headlands near Los Angeles. Barite at these seven locations occurs along strike-slip and basin-margin faults from the shoreline to 1800 m water depth. Submersible observations showed a series of mounds up to 10-m high composed of friable, white barite associated with diffusely venting milky fluid; the mounds support large benthic colonies, including tube worms (Lonsdale, 1979). Barite samples recovered from dredges are brown, green, and white and range from porous, vuggy fragments to massive fragments cut by banded barite veins. Samples from two dredge sites contain fossil worm tubes 1-3 mm in diameter and >10 cm long. All the samples are nearly pure barite, with only minor to trace amounts of other minerals. Chemical analyses show 94-98 wt. % BaSO4, low total rare-earth element (REE) contents (<45 ppm), Sr contents from <2 to 10,000 ppm, and Hg contents up to 1 ppm. Chondrite and shale-normalized REE patterns show light REE enrichments and large positive Eu anomalies. These REE pattern characteristics are typical of marine hydrothermal fluids and minerals. Sulfur isotope ratios (d34SCTD) from +21.6 to +67.4? range from seawater values (+21?) to exceptionally high positive values. Strontium isotope ratios are lower than the modern seawater ratio as well as the seawater ratio that existed at the time of deposition of the host rocks.

Manganese nodules on deep ocean floors have continuously received attention as potential sources for strategic metals such as Co, Ni, Cu, and Mn, due to their vast distribution and relatively higher metal concentrations (Mero, 1965; Cronan, 1980). Several registered Pioneer Investors have already identified promising sites in deep-sea regions for manganese nodule mining (ISA, 1998), and appropriate mining technologies have been developed during the last thirty years by the international consortium and several nations (Welling, 1981; Kaufman et al., 1985; Bath, 1989; Charles et al., 1990; Yang and Wang, 1997; Yamada and Yamazaki, 1998; Hong and Kim, 1999; Muthunayagam and Das, 1999). The mining feasibility for manganese nodules, including an economic evaluation, has been examined in detail by some researchers (Andrews et al., 1983; Hillman and Gosling, 1985; Charles et al., 1990; Soreide et al., 2001).

The southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (SMAR) is one of the least-explored spreading centers in the world with respect to hydrothermal activity. In the past 8 years research focused mainly on the ridge segments close to Ascension Island, discovering hydrothermal fields as far south as 14°20?S (Haase et al., 2007; German et al., 2008; Tao et al., 2011). However, the vast majority of the SMAR ridge axis has never been thoroughly investigated for hydrothermal activity. In the spring of 2013 we used segment-scale AUV deployments as well as conventional CTD surveys to identify areas of hydrothermal activity along 16 mid-ocean ridge segments between 13° and 33°S, thereby covering close to 5 % of the global ridge axis in a single cruise. During cruise MSM25 of the German research vessel Maria S. Merian, we tested longrange (>100 km lines per dive) AUV deployments of GEOMAR?s AUV ABYSS (a Remus 6000 vehicle) along the spreading axis for their capability to locate active venting in a fast and efficient way on regional surveys. "An environmental impact assessment (EIA) of a deep sea mining project typically describes the environmental baseline, impacts of the project to the environmental values, and proposed management techniques. Comprehensive EIAs also consider the impact of the mining project on existing industries, including deep sea fishing. However, few projects to date have included other industries in the EIA process in more than a cursory manner, due to the confidentiality of the process, conflicting priorities, and bureaucratic limitation. However, if the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (particularly Goal 17: Collaboration) are to be achieved, a new way of thinking will be necessary for deep sea mining projects, starting with collaboration at the very beginning of the project life cycle.STRUCTURE OF PRESENTATIONThis presentation will be in the format of an oral (20 minute presentation).The presentation will cover the process of inter-industry collaboration throughout the life cycle of a deep sea mining project, drawing on historical and existing examples, including that of the Chatham Rock Phosphate Project in New Zealand."

Ocean observatory technologies permit uninterrupted, real-time observation of dynamic seafloor environments such as gas hydrate deposits and hydrothermal vent fields that are of both scientific and economic interest. Such observations enable new discoveries of linkages between physical, chemical and biological processes and could permit continuous monitoring of environmental variables during mining operations. Ocean Networks Canada operates the NEPTUNE and VENUS cabled observatories in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. The offshore NEPTUNE observatory supports instruments at two gas hydrate sites on the continental margin off Vancouver Island, and in the hydrothermal vent fields of the Endeavour segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The primary focus of the gas hydrate field observations is to understand the dynamics of the growth and stability of outcropping and sub-seafloor hydrate deposits. Outcropping hydrates at 840 m depth in Barkley Canyon have been monitored for the past 3 years with a mobile instrument platform known as Wally, which is operated over the Internet by a research group in Germany. This tracked vehicle carries standard oceanographic sensors, acoustic current metres, cameras and methane sensors. Data indicate a relationship between degassing of hydrates and tidal currents. In 2012-2013 two high-resolution sonar towers were added to the hydrate field to provide precision tracking of Wally and to monitor volume changes in the outcropping hydrate mounds. A large subsurface hydrate deposit occurs at the Clayoquot Slope site, where bottom depth is 1260 metres. Monitoring instrumentation is currently being established at this location. IHC Merwede is world market leader in the construction of specialist dredging equipment; it is a company with a rich history. The Netherlands is a coastal western country for which water management is a very important issue. Without the enclosure of the coastal areas with dikes and dunes almost two third of the Netherlands would be flooded. These activities are mostly performed by the dredging industry and are the foundation of the dredging industry as it is today. Besides land protection this industry also carries out infrastructure maintenance and performs land reclamation projects. In essence the dredging industry is specialized in horizontal excavation activities and operations in shallow waters with the purpose of gathering bottom sediments and disposing it at a different location. The development is that the activities are moving to deeper waters to a depth of up to 150m. A few years ago IHC Merwede received a request to perform the shallow water excavation techniques at a depth of approximately 2000 meters for the deep sea mining market. In response to the increasing number of requests for deep sea dredging and mining application solutions, IHC Merwede combined all of its activities in this sector to create a new, specially equipped operational unit, IHC Deep Sea Dredging & Mining (IHC DSDM).

Germany?s industry heavily depends on the continuous import of mineral commodities such as manganese, copper, nickel, and molybdenum. Due to the strong increase in metal prices since 2002 Germany?s federal geological survey, the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, hereafter called BGR) applied for a license area for the exploration of deep-sea manganese nodules in the Pacific manganese nodule belt between the Clarion and Clipperton fracture zones. A 75,000 km2 covering license area was eventually granted to the BGR by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in 2006. It is separated into two parts: ?W1? (17,000 km2) and ?E1? (58,000 km2; Fig. 1). The BGR obtained initial information on the abundance and grade of nodules in the license area from samples collected during three cruises with R/V Valdivia and one cruise with R/V Sonne between 1976 and 1978 (Rühlemann et al., 2009). Since the accuracy of navigational data obtained during these cruises is outdated and sample coverage is unevenly distributed and sparse in many parts of the license area, BGR has started a new exploration program to investigate the German license area according to the rules, regulations and procedures issued by the ISA for the exploration of Mn nodules in the Area.

Between April 2000 and April 2002, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) Division of Exploration and Mining has led 6 research expeditions totalling 160 days ship time in waters of Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Indonesia and Australia. Five expeditions were undertaken aboard the Australian research vessel Franklin following successful competitive research proposals, and the sixth used the Indonesian vessel Baruna Jaya VIII (see Table 1). In addition, two CSIRO participants joined JOIDES Resolution for the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 193 in the Manus Basin of PNG. The major scientific objective underpinning these expeditions was to locate and study present-day seafloor and sub-seafloor hydrothermal ore-forming activity in order to develop improved methods of exploring for ancient mineral deposits on land that originally formed by similar processes. The research has been supported financially by a number of Australian-based mineral companies, by Australian international aid agencies, and by appropriation funds from CSIRO, and was conducted in collaboration with researchers from Australia, Indonesia, Portugal, New Zealand, United States of America, South Korea, and the host nations. Building upon earlier successes in the 1986-1997 PACLARK-PACMANUS programs in the Woodlark and Manus Basins of PNG, we have sought to examine a wider range of geological settings in which ancient orebodies are inferred to have formed, including both volcanic and sediment-hosted environments. We have now visited volcanic arcs, fore-arc and triple-junction related submarine volcanoes, and back arc basins associated with convergent plate margins in the SW Pacific and SE Asia, as well as conceptual Mississippi-Valley-type targets associated with warm seeps at passive margins in the Great Australian Bight (see Figure 1). Surveys ranged from northern Sulawesi via far western Bismarck volcanic arc near PNG-Indonesia border, through the eastern Manus Basin and the Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni chain in PNG, the western Solomon Islands festoon, the San Cristobal arc, parts of the Vitiaz arc, to the northern and southern New Hebrides arc in the Solomons and Vanuatu.

The situation in the raw material market has brought into consideration the commercial exploitation of the mineral deposits on the deep sea bed and in particular the manganese nodules. They occur generally in depths of 4000-5000 m, partially covered or buried in bottom sediments. The deposits and their potential recovery have been intensively explored and researched during the past twenty years (Bischoff 1979, Halbach 1988, Padan 1990). Although the present market situation limits the rentability of deep sea mining on an industrial scale, the mining technology is being further developed in many countries. The stagnation phase in the deep mining issue allows sufficient time for conducting research on the precautionary protection of the deep sea environment and for consultation in the development of technologies with the least possible impact on it. The subject has gained in importance since autumn 1994, when the United Nations International Law of the Sea was signed. This also regulates human activities in international waters from the environmental point of view. As fields tests have shown in the past, even with the most modern technologies, mining of the manganese nodules will inevitably be accompanied by a resuspension of some bottom sediments. The generated sediment plumes will be further transported with the ocean currents and in the worst case form stable turbidity layers in different depths (Ozturgut 1981a, Baturin 1991). One of the problems of the environmental impact assessment is the estimation of the plume persistence before it eventually dilutes to approximately the ambient concentration level or settles at the bottom (Lavelle 1981a, Lavelle 1981b, Lavelle 1982, Thiel 1991a, Thiel 1991b). The aim of the research is to develop a numerical sediment transport model in connection with potential manganese nodule mining in a reference area located in the southeastern equatorial Pacific Ocean off Peru (Peru Basin, Discol Experimental Area). In this region, a German mining claim is registered and interdisciplinary field works of the TUSCH (German: TiefseeUmweltSCHutz, deep sea environmental protection) research group are carried out in order to obtain the required scientific background for evaluating of the deep sea mining impacts and to provide the necessary supporting data for the modelling (Thiel 1991a, Thiel 1991h).

Polymetallic nodules are a widespread resource in the Pacific Ocean, particularly in the areas of Clarion-Clipperton (Cronan, 2000). The most abundant mineral phases are formed by iron and manganese oxides, with minor elements such as nickel, copper, cobalt, molybdenum and rare earths elements (Cronan, 1977; Cronan and Moorby, 1981; Iyer and Sharma, 1990; Mangini et al. 1990; Banerjee et al. 1991). In the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), several authors mention that there are three main mineral species of manganese oxides, which have been recognized and which are associated with different processes of formation: todorokita (Mn2+, Ca, Mg) Mn34+ O7. H2), vernadite dMnO and birnessite enriched in Fe and (Na, Ca) 0.5 (Mn4+, Mn3+) 2O4. 1.5 H2O. In nodules of hydrothermal origin have been found todorokite, birnessite, vernadite, goethite and pyrolusite. Although there are many oxides and hydroxides of manganese and iron in amorphous and microcrystalline phases that make up the bulk of the nodule (Frondel et al. 1960; Cronan 1977; Dymond 1981; Calvert and Piper, 1984; Aplin and Cronan, 1985; Martin and Lallier, 1993; Achurra et al. 2009), identifying specific mineral phases is difficult due to the intergrowth of different phases and associated detrital material.

This article is a summary, with documentation and references, of recent global developments in identifying environmental issues affecting the marine mining industry. It is recognised that marine mining for various products occurs at various depths from shallow water (e.g. aggregate and diamond mining) potentially to great depths (e.g. metalliferous muds, and manganese crusts and nodules). Nevertheless there are environmental issues in common, even though the options for resolutions will vary greatly. The point of this review is to identify the issues, so that where site-specific resolutions are considered, it is possible to draw on experience with the issues elsewhere. Related mining issues, e.g. tailings effluent quality, orebody geochemistry, are mentioned where relevant but are not detailed in this article, although obviously they are a part of there solutions to the environmental issues. The environmental issues and their resolutions are important - on the basis of the ethic of not creating more impact than is inevitable, and the long-term financial and social costs at a mine-site of not getting the resolutions right.

The smelting leaching process is known as one of the most favorite methods for the processing of deep-sea manganese nodules because of its smaller environmental impact and easiness of manganese recovery. The sulphuric acid pressure leaching of the matte prepared from deep-sea manganese nodules was studied to dissolve the valuable metals. Almost complete dissolution of Cu, Ni, and Co from matte was achieved under the following conditions: leaching temperature 180°C, time 4 hours, PO2 10 kgs/cm2, acid concentration 2.5% (vol/vol), pulp density 5%, ammonium sulphate 40 g/l. Under these conditions the iron concentration of leach liquor was 0.95 g/l. Optimization of leaching parameters was carried out by statistical design of experiments using 23 full factorial matrix. The linear and interaction co-efficients were evaluated for dissolution of metal values and also for iron concentration in leach liquors.

The first hydrothermal mineral deposits found at a seafloor spreading center were discovered in the Red Sea by multi-national research vessels between 1963 and 1965. At that time, the deposits were considered a special case related to continental rifting and an early stage of opening of an ocean basin. Since that time, examples of almost all major varieties of volcanic- and sediment-hosted hydrothermal deposits associated with basaltic rocks in the geologic record have been found at present spreading centers. Review of over 100 hydrothermal mineral occurrences presently known at oceanic ridges and rifts indicates that a range of deposit sizes from small to large (> 1 x 106 tonnes) occurs at all seafloor spreading rates. However, larger deposits but fewer per unit length of spreading axis appear to form at slow- than at intermediate- to fast-spreading centers based on available data. Larger deposits are more common in sediment-hosted than in volcanic-hosted settings regardless of spreading rate. A spectrum of hydrothermal deposit varieties (stratiform, stockwork and disseminated sulfides; various forms of sulfate, carbonate, silicate, oxide and hydroxide deposits) occurs in almost all of the tectonic settings. High-intensity, ore-forming, subseafloor, hydrothermal convection systems that conserve heat and mass and concentrate hydrothermal precipitates are extremely localized by anomalous physical and chemical conditions relative to nearly ubiquitous low-intensity hydrothermal activity at and flanking seafloor spreading axes at all spreading rates. Investigations of the Gorda Ridge within the proclaimed U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone off northern California and southern Oregon, and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge extending along the center of the Atlantic Ocean, have received new impetus from the discovery of hot black smokers, sizeable polymetallic massive sulfide deposits, and vent animals at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge by the NOAA VENTS Program in 1985. Prior to that time, the oceanographic community focused investigations of seafloor venting at the faster-spreading oceanic ridges of the Pacific Ocean including the East Pacific Rise, the Galapagos spreading center and the Juan de Fuca Ridge because a consensus held that the faster spreading rates at these ridges were necessary to supply the heat to drive black smoker-type venting. As the only oceanic ridge in the Pacific with slow-spreading characteristics, the Gorda Ridge is an outlier of the slow-spreading ridge system that extends through the Atlantic Ocean and western Indian Ocean comprising more than half the 55,000-kilometer-length of the globe-encircling oceanic ridge system. Mode of occurrence and compositional variations of iron-manganese deposits from seamounts around the NW Pacific submarine island-arc area are described on the basis of on-site description during the Moana Wave Cruise MW9507 and other Japanese cruises, as well as geochemical and mineralogical analyses and dating on collected samples. Hydrogenetic and hydrothermal iron-manganese crusts occur at more than 80 sites out of 150 dredge hauls within a small area of 200x 200 km in the back arc region. The hydrogenetic crusts may have grown continuously at slow rates, but 2-3 times faster than those from the Central Pacific, associated with depletion of Co, Cu, and Ni contents. The site-maximum thickness of the hydrogenetic deposits trends to increase with the increase of distance from the active volcanic chain or the age of substrate volcanic rocks. Also the observed great local variations in thickness within single sites and on small scales may be resulted from post-depositional geological activity at the seamounts such as calcareous sedimentation, collapse of volcanic body and mass wasting,. On the other hand, the rapid hydrothermal manganese mineralization has occurred in place and time during arc volcanism and rifting and is still in progress at modern active areas. The ninety ICP/ES chemical plus XRD analysis show that these deposits are of distinct composition by origin or topographic provinces, but small-scale variation of the deposits of each origin and micro-scale depth variation are not clear.

The Chavara and Manavalakurichi placer deposits have been known since a long time for their rich reserves of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, monazite etc. While detailed work has been conducted on the mineralogy and texture of the bulk placer sediments, reports on the detailed investigations on individual minerals are relatively scanty. Though, limited work pertaining to the chemistry of ilmenite has been carried out by Nair et al (1995) and Ramakrishnan et al (1997), a comprehensive study of the weathering patterns of ilmenite along the longitudinal and vertical profiles has not been, so far, undertaken. Data on the microscopic analysis of ilmenite from the southwest placers, too, is sketchy. The present work deals with the variation of the weathering undergone by ilmenite in the southwest placer deposits based on chemical and mineralogical analyses.

The detailed investigation of both active and inactive submarine hydrothermal systems has gained tremendous progress during the last decades because of the increasing usage of remotely operated vehicles (ROV) as well as manned submersibles. Special aspects like the targeted sampling of chimney structures and vent fluids as well as the analysis of zonations of near-surface structures like sulfides mounds was only possible with the usage of such vehicles. However, the availability of such vehicles has been very limited because of the few number of deep-water ROVs and manned submersibles which need both a trained crew and a special research vessel. This was especially true for the German science community which did not have such devices at its disposal until recently. With the ROV QUEST 5 which is based at the University of Bremen (c/o. Prof. Dr. G. Wefer, Dr. V. Ratmeyer) this major drawback has now been eliminated.
