Historically the visual examination of drilled shafts to determine shape was typically done under dry conditions. Many engineers believe that by using a dry method of construction, the question of shape is minimized because they can visually examine the excavation. In fact, test data suggests that slurry stabilized shafts tend to perform better than similarly constructed dry shafts. Clearly, the uncertainty of the shaft shape is magnified when constructed under slurry. Recent advancements have allowed a mechanical caliper to determine shape in wet conditions, but can be limited by certain shaft anomalies. New sonar technology can determine shaft shape, volume and verticality. The value of sonar technology to the geotechnical and foundation industry at large in terms of quality assurance for clients/owners and quality control for drilled shaft contractors is significant. This presentation will discuss the development and process of sonar calipering technology as it relates to the geotechnical and deep foundation industry. Sonar calipering results presented may include images from the following types of projects: slurry walls, bridge piers, cofferdams and secant walls. The results identify shaft anomalies in a variety of slurry environments, from water and polymer mixes through mineral slurries. Real-time in-situ images and CAD drawings will be presented illustrating the advantages of good caliper data taken during construction. This presentation will appeal to the geotechnical and structural engineers, as well as those supporting the deep foundation industry at large.

As a part of Mumbai City Mega Drinking Water Project at Amar Mahal Tunnel-1 Ghatkopar East Mumbai, drinking water tunnels were proposed by MCGM from Amar Mahal to Trombay reservoirs, Amar Mahal to Wadala and further up to Parel. The pipeline has to be underground and laid at a depth of 5.5m. The initial proposal was to provide sheet piling to enable the safe excavation and installation of underground pipeline. However, installation of sheetpiles was practically not feasible due to the existing soil strata for driving the sheet piles. Hence, it was proposed to install micropiles instead of sheet piles. In this paper we discuss about the purpose, basic design, detailed design approaches and actual work implementation of micro pile with temporary struts for shoring protection works in this project.

"The bending tensile stress occurs in the ground improvements when external forces are applied to the column and wall shaped ground improvements. Therefore, in the design of the column and wall shaped ground improvements, the tensile properties of the cement-treated soils become a predominant factor when the external forces induce bending moments. Then the tensile properties are required to design the ground improvements rationally.Three points bending tests are conducted to investigate the bending tensile properties of cement-treated soils in this study. Cement-treated soils mixed in a laboratory are used in the bending tests. The test specimens are prepared with the several mixing properties to study the relationship between the tensile properties and unconfined compressive strength qu. Bending tensile strength Tfb and fracture energy Gf of the cement-treated soils are evaluated from the load-deflection curves obtained from the bending tests. The experimental results indicate that Tfb and Gf are approximately proportional to qu.INTRODUCTIONThe ground improvement by deep mixing has been widely used for structure foundations, retaining walls and liquefaction mitigations. Recently column and wall shaped ground improvements by deep mixing method have been applied for economical reason. When external forces are applied to the column and wall shaped ground improvements, the bending tensile stress occurs in the ground improvements. Therefore, in the design of the column and wall shaped ground improvements, the tensile properties of the cement-treated soils become a predominant factor when the external forces induce bending moments. Then the tensile properties are required to design the ground improvements appropriately.Namikawa et al. (2007) conducted the finite element analysis to investigate the dynamic behavior of the lattice-shaped improved ground for liquefaction mitigation. In the analysis, an improved ground consisting of several grids in a line was chosen to study the basic behavior of the lattice-shaped improved ground. Fig. 1 shows a example of calculated tensile failure zones in the improved soil during the earthquake. Half of one section of the improved soil consisting of two grids in a line for the 8 m × 8 m grid was modeled in the case. In Fig. 1, the failure occurs at the bottom and upper corners of the improved soil grid. The analysis result indicates that the constitutive model which can appropriately evaluate tensile failure behavior of cement-treated soils is required to evaluate the performance of the lattice-shaped improved ground for liquefaction mitigation. In the analysis, the elasto-plastic model developed by Namikawa and Mihira (2007) was adopted for the cement-treated soil behavior. The elasto-plastic model can suitably describe the tensile failure behavior of cement-treated soils. In the elasto-plastic model, tensile fracture energy is adopted to determine a tensile softening relationship because it is difficult to directly measure the stress-strain relationship after the peak stress state in direct tension tests. However there is little experimental study on the tensile fracture energy of cement-treated soils."

The paper describes four different types of support for deep excavations, which are currently used in China. Local experiences were illustrated by presenting case histories for each type of support. For braced excavation in soft clays in Shanghai, the earth pressure against bracings were found to be in conformity with the trapizoidal estimation given by Terzaghi and Peck (1967). For tie-back support of excavations in Beijing and Shengyang, earth pressures were found to be much less than those predicted by ordinary rules. In the construction of a mining shaft in coarse sand below ground water level, high pressure jet grouting has been successfully used to form a circular impervious lining of the shaft. As an effective anti-slide measure, large diameter reinforced concrete piles constructed by open shaft method have been widely used with success.

In the changing construction environment clients are searching for new technology to complete their projects in shorter times. Manufacturers are therefore developing solutions to speed up established construction methods. The significant progress in recent years with the development of increasingly powerful drilling rigs is providing piling companies increase options for the execution of specialist foundation projects. The double rotary drilling methods are primarily used for the construction of pile walls as support for deep excavations. Typically these retaining walls are designed and installed as cased piles using the established Kelly drilling mode. However, more recently it is more popular to undertake these projects with the Cased Continuous Flight Auger (CCFA) system. This paper provides an overview of drilling with double rotary methods, in particular the monitoring during installation.

This paper presents the design and construction of the foundation for a major high-rise real estate development on the west side of Manhattan. Arup was retained by Underpinning and Foundation Skanska to design a secant pile wall as excavation support for a proposed two-level basement of a new 23-story residential building located at 100 11th Avenue and West 19th Street. The secant pile wall will also act as the permanent basement retaining wall for the new building. The site is bounded on two sides by existing structures and is underlain by a thick deposit of very soft organic silt and clay. Therefore, the potential for ground movements and their impact on an adjacent structure bearing on shallow footings were of the utmost concern. This paper addresses the design and construction considerations associated with this secant wall, as well as installation details. Measured wall movements are also used to assess the validity of the pre-construction soil strength and stiffness design parameters.

Outside the oil and gas industry there is an increasing demand to install big piles for the foundation of ports, bridges, and wind-energy plants. This article introduces the design and techniques in using large MENCK pile driving hammers to install big foundation piles. Piles with a length up to 120 m, an outside diameter of 1.0 m to 3.15 m and weighing between 25t and 400t are being driven for these types of foundations. The required energy lies between 200 and 1700 kNm. Pile driving hammers that bring this amount of energy weigh from 38 to 300t and have a length between 10 and 20 m. Handling these big pile driving hammers requires a crawler crane on land or cranes on floating pontoons or jack-ups when working in water. Possible are either vertical or inclined piles, using a leader for inclinations up to 1:1.7 or up to 1:3 in a free riding version. Project descriptions demonstrate the versatility and practical use of the equipment under diverse operating conditions.

Over the past several years, pile foundations have grown to meet the demands of larger and heavier structures. As the foundations have grown, so has the need for larger and more robust piles to carry the increased loads. Seismic considerations have also required larger and tougher piles to withstand the added component of supporting structures during earthquakes. While H-piles, precast concrete piles, timber piles and small pipe piles have been the product of choice, many applications are now calling for much larger piling requiring larger equipment and presenting the contractor with new challenges. This paper is not intended to be a ?how to? guide as much as a discussion on the potential pitfalls a contractor should watch out for when considering a project where mega piles are required.

Micropiles are employed to retrofit existing foundations, including underpinning prior to future construction operations and resupport of existing structures that have experienced distortion and settlement. This paper presents analyses of the two case histories requiring the use of micropiles in these applications. The first case history involves micropiles used to resupport a settled pump station next to an excavation which had suffered basal failure and ground loss. A compression load test pile experienced plunging failure which, after analysis of the strain-gauge data acquired during the test, was attributable to a greater degree of disturbance to the subsoils beneath the site than anticipated. After construction of the micropiles around the pump chamber a synchronized jacking system was used to lift and right the 320 kip chamber structure, followed by resupporting it on the newly constructed piles. The second case history entails the use of micropiles for direct underpinning support of existing columns prior to a utility tunnel installation within an existing high-bay warehouse structure. The design constraint that most significantly affected the successful completion of this project was the desire to bond the new piles into the existing reinforced concrete foundations. As a result of the coring method through the footing, the ultimate bond stress measured during a pullout test was more than twice that assumed in the design. Monitoring of the underpinned columns during trench excavation indicated that the system performance was acceptable. These case histories reinforce the concept that lower capacity micropiles can provide a rapid means to underpin and retrofit existing structures.

The design of side resistance of drilled shafts socketed into rock has traditionally been empirically based on the results of pile loading tests in which the side resistance can be isolated from the side resistance. In practice, this is achieved in one of several ways : loading the pile in tension, using a collapsible base, or by using a device such as an Osterberg cell to load the pile from the base. Although this approach has resulted in generally safe design practice, this has been at the expense of efficient design practice. Safety in design has been achieved through conservatism, which has been necessary because of the large scatter that is evident in the pile socket resistance database (Rowe and Armitage, 1984; Kulhawy and Phoon, 1993). Research at Monash University through the 1980's has been aimed towards understanding and then modelling the complex mechanisms of shear transfer at the concrete-socket interface of sedimentary rocks. Armed with such an understanding, the important factors which affect the strength of pile sockets can be isolated, and the reasons for the large scatter can be deduced. This paper briefly describes the research approach taken, and the main features of the design method and computer program which have now been developed. Some load-settlement predictions of the program are compared with the results of full-scale pile socket tests. The paper then presents the results of a numerical study which relates predicted socket a factors to unconfined compressive strength of the rock, socket diameter, initial normal stress and socket roughness.

"A new condominium project, The Atelier, developed by Pickus Companies located at the corner of Bryn Mawr and Sheridan in Chicago, IL required an earth retention system to protect the surrounding roads, alley, and existing neighboring apartment bui lding during its construction. Slurry Systems, Inc. (SSI) and Ground Engineering Consultants, Inc. designed the earth retention system using cantilevered sheet piling for three of the four sides: two sides bordering major streets and one side bordering an alley. For the fourth side, which borders an existing occupied brick building, a combination of sheet pil ing and AB. CHANCE® helical screw piers were used. SSI was actively involved in the review process of its earth retention system with the City of Chicago and quickly learned that there was no specific code for hel ical piers/anchors. (It appears that this is the case with most metropolitan cities throughout the United States). Consequently, the approval of underpinning for this project became the critical path, as much testing, calculations, meetings, and other details were required prior to its approval.SSI and AB. CHANCE® recognized that this process for underpinning approval must be seen by other contractors/suppliers who wish to use helical piers/anchors in the City of Chicago. Consequently, this project served as an opportunity to work with the City of Chicago and the City's Building Code Committee in furthering the development of the Helical Piers/Anchors Code, Section 1814. INTRODUCTION - HELICAL PIERSDefinition. A helical pier or anchor consists of one or more helix-shaped steel bearing plate(s) attached to a central steel stem (solid bar or pipe), which is installed by rotating or ""torquing"" into the ground. Each helix is attached near the tip, is circular in plan , and is formed into a screw thread with a defined pitch. Helical piers/anchors are pre-fabricated and can derive their load-carrying capacity through both end bearing and skin friction. The helical piers/anchors can be augmented with grout."

This paper describes the technology behind the development of an automated energy control system for a diesel pile hammer. Some background is given on experience using an energy monitoring system on the Route 1/I-95 interchange in Alexandria, Virginia. An adjustable hammer throttle and feedback from an energy monitoring system was then used to create a fully automated hammer energy control system. The performance of this system is described in reference to a piling project in Canada where the automated energy control system was used to obtain an unprecedented level of quality control and assurance ? data and graphs from the project are presented. The hammer energy control system (ECS) was used to successfully control and maintain a prescribed impact energy for the diesel hammer. This paper presents the first ever results from a truly automated diesel pile hammer and points to a new direction in quality control and assurance in pile driving.

"Drilled displacement piles (DDP) have been used around the world for decades as foundation elements for structures and embankments. Typically the pile toes are designed to penetrate into stiff or dense soil formations to achieve sufficient base resistance. Recent research at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia has discovered that the in situ stress conditions in stiff to hard clays is directly related to pile installation rates, which in turn are a function of the piling rig capacity and ground conditions. With adequate and constant pile penetration rates in situ stress conditions in the stiff to hard clay are increased by about 40%, resulting in significantly higher pile capacities. If pile penetration rates are too slow the in situ stress conditions are reduced considerably by remoulding and shearing of the clay, potentially causing reduced pile capacities. The paper presents the results of full-scale test piles at a stiff to hard clay site installed using different full-scale piling equipment.INTRODUCTIONDrilled displacement piling (DDP) is a piling technique in which a hollow stem, fitted with a purpose built displacement tool at the bottom, is drilled into the ground. Dissimilar to non-displacement piles, like Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles or conventional rotary bored piles drilled with kelly bars, the soil is not excavated during the DDP penetration process, but is displaced laterally and to a lesser extent vertically. The cavity created by the drilling tool is filled with highly workable concrete during the extraction process. The DDP technique is very economical providing high production rates and creating only marginal drill spoil, which has led to its increased global usage during the last decade. The typical DDP installation process is described in Figure 1."

A drilled displacement pile program was utilized for the expansion of an existing power plant in Cohasset MN adjacent to the Mississippi River. The drilled displacement (DD) pile is an innovative foundation type that provides exceptional value in some geologies. In the U.S., DD piles have typically been used in coarse-grained soils due to the large friction capacities that can be generated by the piles in these conditions. This project was the first large scale experience for the project team where it was anticipated that significant portions of the DD pile capacity would be developed in primarily fine-grained soils. The project site consisted primarily of variable amounts of fill overlying predominantly low plasticity alluvial silts. In some cases, alluvial silty sand layers were encountered within the expected pile installation depths. Alluvial sands were typically encountered below the silts, in some cases within the expected pile installation depths. The project team developed a probe and pile load test program to address the variable subsurface conditions across the site. The program included monitoring various parameters (including applied torque and tool penetration rate) during the drilling portion of the pile installation using recently developed data acquisition techniques. This data was used to estimate the rig energy, or Installation Effort (IE), required for pile installation. IE profiles from the test and indicator piles were compared with subsurface data available from a number of previous site characterizations. Additionally, Cumulative IE values were compared to an in-house database of IE vs. DD Pile Capacity. Final production pile toe levels were based primarily on IE values selected from this comparison. The IE data collected during production was also used to address large variations in pile-cutoff elevation (relative to a fairly uniform ground surface elevation).

The construction of 1200 m length new quay wall located 1,300 m East of the existing Suez Canal bypass and about 1,000 m south of the Mediterranean shoreline is one of the main projects currently under development in Egypt. Due to very weak foundation soil, mainly soft clay, a particular effort, both in terms of design approach and construction feasibility, has been required. The execution of "barrettes" and T-shaped" diaphragm wall panels down to a depth of 65 m and under extremely severe soil condition has been required in order to pass through the upper soft soil and to reach a competent base layer. Very critical and variable hydrological conditions have been also encountered due to the contemporary nearby channel dredging activity, thus increasing the difficulty for maintaining the stability of the slurry trenches opened in soft material. This paper gives a general overview of the project with some emphasis to the most significant design aspects and to the construction of the deep foundation elements.

Numerical analyses were performed to analyze the behavior of two different type of suction piles (mono type and group type) under various soil layer conditions (uniform silty clay layer, uniform silty sand layer, and two-layer deposit consisting of clay and sand layers) and lateral loading locations (top, middle, and bottom of the suction pile). According to the results, mono suction pile shows maximum resistance when load is applied on its middle, regardless of the soil layer conditions, while group suction piles varies significantly according to the allowance on head rotation. When head rotation is allowed, the behavior of group type piles become similar to the behavior of mono suction pile. Whereas, when rotation is prevented, resistance is maximized when load is applied on the top head. Moreover, group suction piles show higher efficiency regardless of the ground condition and geological stratum. For further advances, concrete block on the top of group suction piles are suggested as an effective alternative method to prevent partial rotation and maximize ground resistance for group suction piles.

They are generally used as mooring anchors in various floating structures, marine platforms, and offshore wind turbines. According to its convenience in installation and removal, suction type foundations are becoming good alternatives for deep ocean support systems. The bearing capacity is similar to the bearing behavior of ordinary offshore structures (piles or drilled shafts). The most common use of suction caissons is anchors for catenary mooring lines, where the chain angle at the mudline is close to zero (Randolph, 2002; Sharma, 2004).Recently, it is reported that a huge isolated single suction pile can be replaced by a group of moderatesized suction piles (Randolph et al. 2004). A single monopile is easy to be produced and installed in site. It is expected that monopile foundation is not applicable for deep depths because it has a limitation on penetration according to its huge side skin area (i.e. friction). Moreover, stiffness requirements sometimes render thicker pile wall conditions which are impractical to be produced."

The selection of the Osterberg Cell (O-Cell) technology as the standard testing method for deep foundations of the Railways Po Viaduct in Northern Italy offered a relevant number of field measures on large bored pile behaviour in alluvial soils. The assessment of pile response during such ?non standard? testing procedure was performed through the comparison with standard top load tests on companion piles as well as by numerical models of the tests including a simplified pile-soil interaction scheme. As shown in this paper, the O-Cell technology allowed a careful assessment of the non-linear pile behaviour even at quite small loading levels as those required by a posteriori proof tests on production piles. Simple numerical models proved to be very effective in the simulation and the interpretation of pile behaviour during such unconventional testing procedure.

"Dry Jet Mixing (DJM) technique is widely known as soil mitigation technique with small ground displacement during installation comparing with other techniques. Some projects involving sensitive structures, however, require smaller impact than in conventional technique. In order to reduce ground displacement during DJM installation, this paper introduces systematic mixing technique, RD-DJM (Reducing Displacement – Dry Jet Mixing). RD-DJM is characterized by injection nozzle on the rim of mixing blade and fin plate on mixing shaft. These devices contribute efficient collection of injected air toward mixing shaft and result in reduction of ground displacement. The authors demonstrate successful performance of RD-DJM indicating difference between conventional installation and RD-DJM technique.INTRODUCTIONThe Dry Jet Mixing (DJM) method is one of the most common techniques in Japanese deep soil mixing field and characterized mechanical mixing of powdery binder with in-situ ground (dry-mixing technique). It is widely believed that DJM Method has great advantages in less quantity of binder to achieve the desired strength and less waste generation during installation.DJM method can meet the required strength with less binder content than wet mixing. And volume of binder of dry mixing is absolutely less than wet-mixing injecting considerable volume of binder slurry. This means that dry mixing causes less ground displacement compared with wet mixing.As the medium for forced feeding of the binder, the DJM method uses compressed air, which is blown from the mixing blade nozzles to scatter the binder and then recovered through the periphery of the mixing shaft to the ground surface. Because the binder is injected outward from the injection orifice at the root of the mixing shaft, a part of the air may escape to untreated areas due to the blockage of air recovery path around the mixing shaft. Figure 1 illustrates possible escaped air and leakage around installation location."

"Collapsible soil is known as one of the difficult soils, which possesses considerable strength when it is dry and significantly reduced when inundated. In practice, in case of a thick layer, pile foundations are often used to penetrate the collapsible soil to firm soil/rock strata. Inundation of collapsible soil is accompanied by a large and sudden settlement, which may significantly increase the negative skin friction and accordingly the drag loads on the pile’s shaft. Inundation may take place from the running surface-water or raising the groundwater. In case of surface water, the amount of settlement varies, depending on the extent of the wetted zone and the degree of saturation in the soil, while rising groundwater will produce full saturation in the ground and accordingly larger settlement.In the literature, there is lack of reports dealing with the prediction of the drag load on piles in collapsible soils subjected to inundation. This is due to the complexity of modeling collapsible soil analytically. Alternatively; the results of a sophisticated experimental investigation may guide the researcher to develop a model to predict the drag load on these piles.This paper presents the results of a small-scale experimental investigation tailored to measure the soil collapse during inundation and the associated drag load on an endbearing pile’s shaft. Based on the results of the present investigation, the effect of the soil collapse potential and the pressure acting on the soil during inundation on negative skin friction is presented.INTRODUCTIONCollapsible soil is a metastable material, traditionally defined as unsaturated soils that experiences a radical rearrangement of particles and significant reduction of volume upon wetting with or without loading (Bara 1976; Houston et al., 1988). A wide range of soils fall into the category of collapsible soil, including naturally existing types of soils such as: Alluvial flood plains, mud flows, residual soils, colluvial deposits, fans, aeolian or wind-blow deposits sands and silts (loess), volcanic tuffs, gypsum, dispersive clays, loose cemented sands , sodium rich montmorillonite clays (Clemence and Finbarr 1981).Soil wetting and soil saturation may take place as a result of urbanization or natural causes, such as: groundwater level rise, landscape irrigation, broken water pipelines or sewer lines, poor surface drainage, groundwater recharge, cut/fill construction, and moisture increase due to capillary rise. The severity of the outcome depends heavily on the so called collapse potential of the soil, which depends mainly on; soil type, compaction effort, initial water content and stress level at soaking (Houston and Houston, 1997; Ayadat and Hanna, 2007)."
