"Melt conditioned direct-chill (MC-DC) casting is a novel technology which combines vertical direct-chill (DC) casting with a high shear device directly immersed in the sump for in situ microstructural control. In this paper, the solidification mechanism of DC casting under varying conditions is discussed. The temperature profiles in the sump were measured under the steady state casting conditions by using sacrificing thermocouples. Detailed comparisons of the derived thermal condition are made. The individual role of grain refiner additions, natural thermosolutal convection and forced convection in the sump and the interplay of these factors in determining the solidification structures of DC cast billets are discussed. The MC-DC casting technology can be used to control microstructural constituents and casting defects in DC cast billets/ingots by in situ manipulating of the thermal and fluid flow conditions.INTRODUCTION Direct-chill (DC) casting of aluminium, has been the essential commercial process for producing feedstock suitable for subsequent processing, such as extrusion, rolling or forging. Fine and equiaxed grain structures in the as-cast billets/ingots are required to enable a fine and uniform distribution of second phase particles and microporosity. This leads to higher productivity, more cost-effective homogenisation and more efficient downstream thermomechanical processing. The addition of chemical inoculants has been the standard industrial operation prior to casting for grain refinement of Al alloys. However, it has been established that less than 1% of the grain refiner particles added actually act as heterogeneous nuclei to refine the grain structures, showing a very low grain refining efficiency (Greer, Bunn, Tronche, Evans, & Bristow, 2000). Moreover, the remaining particles from the grain refiner addition in the final casting may cause surface defects during downstream processing. A major issue of the metallurgical quality of large sized ingots/billets is the non-uniformity of microstructures even with chemical grain refiner additions. This is due to the fact that the grain structure formed in the different zones of the billet depends on the local chemical composition and local cooling rate. The local cooling rate can vary from 0.4~1 K/s at the centre of the billet to around 10–20 K/s at its surface zone (Nadella, Eskin, Du, & Katgerman, 2008). The large thermal gradient along radial direction between billet surface and interior of the melt during conventional DC casting induces thermal stress and cold cracking even with grain refiner addition. Therefore the control of casting defects, such as macrosegregation, porosity, cold/hot cracking and distortion of the billets/slabs, etc., is still challenging in industry, causing high scrap rate of DC cast ingots/billets even with grain refiner addition."

The Cadia mine is shifting from the open pit operation to the Cadia East underground block cave. The resulting increase in milled tonnes and the decrease in fines production through shifting to block caving require an increase of over 25% in installed power. This expansion is being accomplished via the installation of up-front crushing and HPGR milling of the ore, with the SAG mill receiving a secondary crushed feed. This design, criteria and rationale for selection is presented. Over the coming years, the mine will further expand capacity. The target is to accomplish this with minimal addition of installed power or use of fresh water. This presents a challenge that epitomizes the future constraints on our resource dependent and intensive industry. The approach and proposed options to this longer-term expansion are also presented.

In 2009 Newmont Mining Corporation’s annual global spend on grinding media reached $94M USD, having doubled in the five years since 2004. The major contributing factor to the spend escalation during this period was unit consumable price, with total media consumption also rising as a function of annual ore tonnes milled. In an effort to better understand and manage the growth of this expenditure a significant supply chain management program was implemented. This was complemented by a series of technical initiatives focussed on grinding media specifications, quality management and the prediction of grinding media wear rate as a function of physical ore characteristics. This paper discusses the methodology and outcomes of these activities.

The increasing energy costs associated with mining has become an issue that needs to be addressed for future sustainable production. Vale Inco is undertaking a Ventilation on Demand (VOD) Project in an effort to minimize costs, continue to mine at depth and reduce green house gas emissions. A dynamic VOD system is very complex with potential high risk. Therefore, a systematic approach is being taken for successful development and implementation of the concept. The physical components of the system are currently being tested at various Vale Inco mine sites. While the operability of the physical components are being tested, the strategy for optimizing the architectures of the system is being defined. This presentation discusses the method of developing a VOD system at Vale Inco.

Technological advances in mobile systems, such as smartphones and tablet computers, provide engineers with new opportunities to enhance the current facility management processes. Equipped with powerful system processors, touch screens, and wireless communication capabilities, mobile systems enable the experience of omnipresence of facility information. Building information modeling (BIM) also enables improvements in facility management. With an advanced data structure and visualization capacity, BIM can be used in numerous applications for facility management. This study aims to incorporate the strength of mobile systems and BIM in facility management. The proposed system, which utilizes smartphone technology, allows engineers to conduct facility management functions, such as maintenance planning, inspection, and assessment, irrespective of a user?s location. The integration of building information modeling in a system provides detailed visual information of the building components. A case study was conducted to verify the applicability of the mobile system in terms of the hardware functions, system design, and user interface. This proposed system, with its study results, provides a guideline as to how mobile systems can be effectively integrated with BIM for improved management of facility information.

A review is presented of the fundamental differences between the Superior and Churchill geologic provinces. Structure, lithology, grade of metamorphism and a single recent age determination suggest that the Flin Flon -Snow Lake and Lynn Lake belts are remnant blocks of originally Superior rocks lying within the Churchill province. Major mineral belts occur along the main boundary between the Superior and Churchill provinces (the Thompson -Moak Lake nickel belt) and within the remnant Superior blocks inside the Churchill province (Fiin Flon -Snow Lake and Lynn Lake). During the Hudsonian orogeny, metamorphic gradients must have existed across the Churchill-Superior boundary and between the remnants of Superior rocks and the enclosing gneisses of the Churchill province. It is possible that not only the unusual nickel deposits of the Thompson belt but also the base metal deposits of the Flin Flon -Snow Lake and Lynn Lake districts are due to redistribution, or diffusion and migration of metals to areas of lower-grade metamorphism during the Hudsonian orogeny.

"Magnetic pulse forming (MPF) is one of the extreme high-speed forming processes. A metal sheet which is accelerated by electromagnetic force is collided onto a mold and fine and sharp details of the product can be obtained. The deformation mechanism of the MPFed metal cannot be understood only by the microstructure observation of the deformed metal. The deformation behavior of the metal should be investigated also by considering the local microstructure change with strain, strain rate and temperature change during deformation. Numerical analysis is an effective method to achieve this requirement. In this study, pure Al and Cu sheets were deformed by MPF. Impact velocity of the metal sheet was calculated by using ANSYS Emag-Mechanical. Based on the obtained impact velocity, the deformation behavior of the metal sheet was reproduced, and local strain, strain rate, and temperature were analyzed by using ANSYS AUTODYN. The relationship between the local microstructure change of Al and Cu sheets and the deformation parameters was examined.INTRODUCTIONMagnetic pulse forming (MPF) is one of the high-speed forming processes using electromagnetic force. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram of MPF. A metal sheet is placed over the coil in the discharge circuit. The discharge current runs through the coil, and magnetic fieldis producedaround the coil. An eddy current is inducedin the metal sheet. Interaction between magnetic field and eddy current creates electromagnetic force. The metal sheet accelerated by electromagnetic forcecollides ontothe mold. Forming is completed in a few tens of micro-seconds.MPF is suitable for metals with a high electrical conductivity like Al and Cu.The MPFed metal may have characteristic microstructure because of high strain rate deformation."

Mining-induced seismicity and rockbursting is one of the primary risks in deep mines. Seismic data management software has been created to facilitate analysis of mining-induced seismicity. The Mine Seismicity Risk Analysis Program (MS-RAP) is a purpose built database with mine seismicity analysis tools. One of the primary features of MS-RAP is the creation of seismic hazard maps in quasi-real time. The seismic hazard maps identify areas that are more prone to large seismic events and rockbursts, allowing risk management measures to be focused on the areas of greatest risk. These maps allow mining engineers to be more proactive about identifying and managing seismic related geomechanics risks in mines.

"The NERCO Con Mine is situated in the amphibolite facies aureole of the Western Plutonic Complex overprinting the Yellowknife Greenstone Belt. Metamorphic grade of the upright monoclinal basaltic succession decreases from hornblende-amphibolite facies along the border of the batholith to greenschist facies. Metamorphic isograds, subparalleling the faulted margin of the batholith, transect volcanic stratigraphy and coincide with major goldbearing shears.Gold mineralization is confined to north-striking, west-dipping shear zones where hangingwall amphibolite facies mineral assemblages retrogress to chlorite-carbonate-sericite-sulfide bearing schists hosting multiple generations of quartz-ankerite veins. The gold-producing portions of the Con and Campbell Shears occur where these structures transect an east trending thermal corridor. The corridor is defined by granitic plugs and a number of related breccia bodies, that can be traced outwards from the batholith across the greenstone belt.Prograde reactions of greenstone during amphibolitization effectively liberate fluids that partition metals. With retrograde reactions at shear zones, gold is precipitated with quartz due to the destabilization of sulfide and arsenic complexes. The coupling of regional prograde metamorphic and restricted retrograde metasomatic overprints suggest mineralization is temporally related to emplacement of the Western Plutonic Complex. Economic gold concentrations within the intrusive corridor indicates enhanced metamorphic overprint of hornfelsed greenstones enveloping satellite intrusives peripheral to the main batholith."

"For many years, rejection of pyrrhotite at the milling stage has been a viable method for sulphur dioxide abatement. Pyrrhotite rejection options have included the use of selective pyrrhotite depressants in flotation; a depressant which has recently come into use is diethylenetriamine (DETA). This reagent has been the subject of recent research and development efforts in the processing of nickel-copper sulphide ores.In the present study, adsorption trends for DETA have been monitored under the dynamic conditions of flotation using a spectrophotometric method which has been adopted for this purpose at Falconbridge Limited. The results indicate that the adsorption of DETA is quite fast and in the majority of cases, accounts for the disappearance of 75-95 % of this reagent from pulp's liquid phase. The adsorption decreases linearly with an increase in the DET A dosage from 100 git to 600 git. The tailings produced in flotation tests were subjected to washing with deionized water at 60 °C to examine the desorption of DET A. These results indicate that the amount desorbed increases with increasing DETA dosage used during flotation but is less than 7 per cent of that adsorbed. It was found that adsorption of DETA alone, even at relatively high levels, does not always cause depression of pyrrhotite. A new combination of reagents identified in the metallurgical laboratories of Falconbridge Limited utilizes sulphur dioxide with DETA. These reagents together are capable of efficient depression of pyrrhotite on a consistent basis."

"Experimental and pilot operations in bituminous sand processing require due care and attention in the design and analysis of measurement programs. This paper deals with a case study in experimental design and data analysis for a series of experimental campaigns that have been conducted over the past five years by Kilborn Western Inc., acting on behalf of Bitmin Resources. Beginning with the design of the experiment and following into the use of linear and nonlinear regression models, the phenomenology of bitumen extraction is illustrated. The final testing program tested 13 oil sand types as well as a wide range of process variables for all the unit operations of the complete process.The program was successful in developing process fundamentals and scale-up criteria. Several phenomenological models were proposed and tested. Their range of applicability was explored. This paper illustrates the range of applicability of these models and discusses the development of alternative models.IntroductionOver the past five years Kilborn has conducted a series of bench scale and pilot scale experiments designed to explore the phenomenolgy of a new concept in medium temperature processing of bituminous ores. These experiments at feed rates ranging from .1 to 24 t/h were conducted on water wet sands from the .Athabasca region near Fort McMurray. They were based on experimental designs chosen to provide a systematic means of identifying the response surfaces of the process over a range of conceptual designs. Losses of metal are often traced to incorrect pH/ORP signals in flotation, leaching, extraction, electrolysis, and precipitation processes, aggravated by pressure changes. IC Controls, a Canadian mining sensor manufacturer, developed a new superior pH/ORP sensor that stops metal losses, reduces environmental footprint and contributes to sustainability. The cause of incorrect pH/ORP signal is rooted in the reference. Reference junctions are designed to allow diffusion of reference chloride ions into the process but also allow process ions to diffuse into the reference. This development is important to mines and hydrometallurgists where sulphide, cyanide, ammonia and other poisoning ions are present in the process. These ions react with reference electrolyte components causing the signal to change, drifting from the correct process value. With fluctuating process pressure, ion in migration dilutes the electrolyte producing similar signal drifts. If process ion in-diffusion could be stopped, the pH/ORP signal would be accurate. IC Controls new pH/ORP sensor stops process ion in-diffusion, and remains accurate over long periods. New processes using higher pressure and fluctuating pressurized reactors will greatly benefit from stable pH readings. Similar to IC Controls' proven model 642 Mining pH sensor, our new model 647 contributes to sustainability through reducing disposal costs from waste reagents, lost metal and fewer used sensors.

High fidelity commercial process simulation packages can be used at different stages of a greenfield project, from initial plant design to operator training in the later stages. However, there are several factors that make the software less attractive for small and medium size brownfield projects, such as the licensing cost and the fact-finding manpower required for model design and simulator maintenance. In this paper a different approach is described. The knowledge gathered from operating personnel was used to implement higher level models based on plant data, operating heuristics, and experience rather than detailed component-level models. The computing platform used was a low-cost, well-established, control system vendor-independent software. Throughout this paper we demonstrate the success of implementing this model-based approach using two industrial examples. The first example is a simulation of the carbon monoxide (CO) distribution system at a metallurgical complex. The purpose of this simulator was to test new control strategies and PLC programs prior to implementation. CO being a toxic combustible gas, validation of the suggested control system changes was necessary for plant safety. Simulation of specific operating conditions helped alleviate concerns and improved plant-wide acceptability of the new operating philosophy. The second example is a boiler simulator at a petrochemical plant. The operator training simulator (OTS) was designed as a platform for experienced operators to practice handling rare or abnormal conditions. A customized medium-fidelity model was developed for this targeted application where the cost of a full scale high-fidelity model could not be justified.

"A series of flotation tests was carried out on Brunswick Mining ore with various pH modifiers (soda ash, lime, KOH) and added ions (ferric, nitrate, sulphate) in the copper lead rougher circuit. The main objective was to identify downstream effects on sphalerite activation and subsequent zinc rougher flotation. Some significant differences in zinc flotation were obtained. Most notably, soda ash and nitrate ions had a positive impact and ferric ions a pronounced negative effect on selectivity.Selected products from the flotation tests were deslimed at 400 mesh, washed with methanol, air dried, placed in teflon vials purged with nitrogen and stored at -15 degrees C. Numerous liberated sphalerite and pyrite particles were selected under a stereoscope and placed in rows on indium foil. The surface compositions of the particles were analyzed with an innovative laser probe (LIMS). The very small analysis area of the LIMS enables the surfaces of individual grains to be characterized. In addition, the rapid analysis time allows a statistically significant number of grains to be analyzed quickly.Surface lead appears to play a major role in zinc activation/flotation. Possible mechanisms are proposed to explain the variations in metallurgical performance at the different test conditions.IntroductionAlthough the bulk composition of mineral grains is an important consideration for the mineral processor it is ultimately surface composition and topography (edges and dislocations preferred sites for reactions) that control reactivity in flotation and cyanidation (passivation, encapsulation and preg-robbing). "With the trend towards bringing into production ore bodies of lower and lower copper content every possible avenue of approach to achieve maximum copper metal recovery and keep milling costs to a minimum are of increasing importance.Equipment manufacturers have contributed a great deal by designing larger mills, flotation machines, pumps, etc. in lowering capital and operating costs; instrumentation and automation usually as a joint effort of operating staffs and equipment manufacturers have resulted in lower operating costs and improved metallurgy. Likewise manufacturers of chemicals used in mineral beneficiation have directed their research and development at new flotation reagents and treatment schemes to complement the needs for more efficient products, permitting coarser grinds without detriment to recovery, higher flotation rates, higher degrees of selectivity, as well as chemicals to improve settling, clarification and filtration. The various treatment schemes in use and suggested for consideration are:1) The choice of the flotation treatment scheme is largely dictated by the desire to operate a simple circuit, originally consisting of rougher and scavenger flotation, with scavenger concentrate either returning to the head of the rougher circuit or joining the rougher concentrate for cleaning by reflotation, with and without prior regrinding. The cleaner tailing was also recycled to the head of the rougher circuit. In the case of porphyry copper ores, this was originally the standard circuit. Lime is the preferred alkalinity regulator to adjust pH, usually in the range 10-12.To avoid the undesirable effects of circulating loads and gain the advantage of simplified control of the rougher circuit, open circuit cleaning is practiced more and more. In this scheme, cleaner tailing is scavenged to produce a discardable tailing and the scavenger concentrate returned either to the cleaner or the regrind circuit."

"Keymet Mine lies on the Elmtree River 4 miles west of Petit Rocher and about 18 miles northwest of Bathurst, Gloucester County, New Brunswick. A good gravel road runs through the property.The deposit was discovered in 1880 when a vein 7 to 8 feet wide was re-ported. In 1883 the first shaft was sunk as part of an exploration program which was carried out sporadically until 1897, when the company dissolved. Activity on the property was intermittent until 1946 when the property was again staked and during the next year diamond drilling intersected the vein in several places. In December 1949 Coulee Lead and Zinc Mining Company optioned the property and held it until its sale to Keymet Mines Limited in June 1952. By July of the same year work had begun on a three-compartment shaft.Early development work was concentrated on the 150, 300 and 450 foot levels but the shaft has since been sunk to I,228 feet to allow for eight levels at intervals of 150 feet. Little lateral work has been done to date below the 600-foot level.The first mill constructed to treat the ore was to go into production in the spring of 1954, but was destroyed by fire. A second mill, having a capacity of 200 to 300 tons a day, was officially opened October 25th, 1954. Present shipments are zinc and copper-lead-silver concentrates.The rocks of the area are shale, conglomerate, limestone, and quartzite with minor interbedded volcanic rocks, all probably of Silurian age. Small plugs of Devonian acidic intrusions occur 3 miles east and about 5 miles northwest of the mine. Minor dykes of both acidic and basic rocks occur on the mine property. In many of the fine-grained sedimentary rocks the more brittle laminre have been brecciated and give the rock the appearance of an argillaceous conglomerate."

Cross-rolling, in which the roll axis is tilted by 7.5 degrees against the transverse direction, was carried out on a commercial magnesium alloy. The (0002) texture intensity of the cross-rolled specimen was lower than that of the unidirectionally rolled specimen. Also, the grain size of the cross-rolled specimen was smaller than that of the unidirectionally rolled specimen. As a result of the Erichsen tests at 433 ? 493 K, the press formability of the cross-rolled specimen was higher than that of the unidirectionally rolled specimen. The high formability of the cross-rolled specimen is attributed to both the reduction in (0002) texture intensity and the enhancement of grain refinement by the cross-rolling.
