"AMAG investigated different aspects to improve the resistance against grain coarsening in aerospace alloys during recrystallization and was successful in finding several opportunities to minimize this effect. The studies show that one aspect to counteract grain coarsening is the chemical composition and subsequently all phases that are formed during homogenization. Starting with a fine grain (~ 50 µm) can lead to a final grain size of few mm. On the other hand with a coarse initial grain size (approximately 150 µm) and the right chemical composition the grain size can stay almost constant despite different deformation steps. Additional we investigated different sequences for the component production to eliminate the problem of grain coarsening as a coarse grain has a detrimental effect on product performance.INTRODUCTION In the aircraft industry, aluminium sheets are most commonly deformed in their soft state, followed by solution heat treatment and natural or artificial aging. If the preceding deformation is in a critical amount, during the recrystallization at solution heat treatment grain coarsening can occur. A subsequent deformation to this condition leads to an orange peel surface, which requires additional polishing. Next to this extra effort the coarse grain size produces a drop in the mechanical properties, often below specification limits. If there is no subsequent deformation, this effect is not visible and without destructive testing there is no possibility to detect the error. As mentioned before, this effect occurs during recrystallization, which is a process that is driven by the stored energy in the microstructure. The two most important aspects for an increase of the stored energy are the increase of the grain boundaries fraction (smaller grain size) and the increase of the dislocation density caused by deformation. The increase in dislocation density during the deformation arise from trapping of existing dislocations and from the generation of new dislocations. During recrystallization all grains are built completely new, so all dislocations are removed (Humphreys & Hatherly, 2004). There are three requirements for recrystallization:"

"In this study, hardness test, differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)and transmission electron micros copy were carried out to investigate the age-hardening behavior of Al-Mg-Si alloy with a Mg+Si concentration of 1.5mass%, and a Mg/Si ratio of 1.0. Pre-aging treatment was conducted for the solution-treated and then water-quenched specimen at 100, 80, 60, 40, 20 (natural aging), 0 and -20°C for 20min or 5h, followed by artificial aging at 170°C for 20min. It was found that when pre-aging time is prolonged from 20min to 5h, the bake-hardening response is deteriorated irrespective of the pre-aging temperature. In particular, the specimens subjected to pre-aging at 20-40°C for 5 h hardly increased the hardness with the subsequent artificial aging. From the results of DSC measurement, it was suggested that as pre-aging temperature is lowered, the amount of solute clusters formed during pre-aging, i.e. Mg-Si clusters and Si-rich clusters, is decreased, but the ratio of Si-rich clusters is increased, resulting in the deteriorated bake-hardening response.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, Al-Mg-Si alloys have been widely used forautomotive body panels due to their excellent characteristics such as high strength-to-weight ratio and good formability. Their strength is increased not only by artificial aging during paint-bake treatment; i.e. “bake-hardening”, but also when kept at room temperature(RT);i.e. “natural aging”, in association with the suppressed bake-hardening response. Such a “negative effect of two-step aging” has been a serious problem because Al-Mg-Si alloy coils are unavoidably maintained at RT in the manufacturing process of body panels; e.g. shipping and storage. However, it was reported that pre-aging above 70°C before the two-step aging can restore the bake-hardening response, and such an improvement is related to the formation of solute clusters(Sato, 2006; Abidet al., 2010; Takaki et al., 2014; Zandbergen et al., 2015). From the comprehensive analysis by three-dimensional atom probe (Aruga et al., 2014 and 2015), it is believed that Mg-Si clusters formed during pre-aging transform into the strengtheningß"" phase, whereas Si-rich clusters formed during pre-aging act as a detrimental precursor of ß""phase. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of pre-aging conditions, especially pre-aging temperature and time, on the formation of solute clusters during pre-aging, in order to elucidate the mechanism of the age-hardening behavior of an Al-Mg-Si alloy."

"Flotation is possible when the forces operating between a bubble and the attached particle are properly balanced. There are many forces operating in the bubble-particle aggregate. The magnitude, location and direction of the forces depend on the type of process. The simplest arrangement in flotation is when a spherical bubble is attached to a spherical particle and both are immersed in water. In such a system there are four essential forces which shape the stability of the bubble-particle aggregate. They are excess pressure and interfacial solid/liquid, solid/gas and liquid/gas forces. A proper analysis and balance of the size, location and direction of these four principal forces lead to a general equation delineating the stability of the spherical particle–attached bubble system. Specific cross sections of the system and solution of the general equation lead to different relationships including the Young formula as well as the well-known geometrical relation between contact angle, particle and bubble radiuses. The arrangement of forces in the proposed graphical representation of the Young law is different from that presently used in literature for a bubble attached to an unmovable solid particle. Many real solid/liquid/gas systems are more complex due to the presence of additional forces which change the regular curvature of the liquid/gas interface leading to advancing and receding contact angles.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous papers (Athukorallage, Aulisa, Iyer & Zhang, 2015; Chau, Bruckard, Koh & Nguyen, 2009; Drzymala, 1994; Lubarda, 2012; Pellicer, Manzanares & Mafe, 1995; Wang, Cui, Zhou, Xu, Sun, & Zhu, 2014; Young, 1804) and books (Davies & Rideal, 1963; Defay & Prigogine, 1966; Lee, 2013; Lyklema, 2000) dealing with the solid/liquid/gas system. Many of them concern the three involved phases having the shape of a sphere or spherical cap and the formed contact angle. The contact angle is usually measured through the liquid phase and can be either smaller or greater than 90o. The essential part of these publications is a graphical representation of the system with the Young equation shown as a result of balance of only three forces that is the excess Gibbs (or Helmholz) free energy per unit area of the three involved interfaces (Davies & Rideal, 1963; Defay & Prigogine, 1966; Israelachvili, 1985) (Figs. 1a-c). "The occurrence of recrystallization in cold-worked aluminum sheet during the brazing process leads to loss of strength, an inhomogeneous grain structure and reduced corrosion resistance. AlMgScZr alloys are known for their extraordinary recrystallization resistance due to the influence of Sc and Zr addition on their microstructure. Here, we investigate the effect of alloy composition (i.e. Mn, Mg, Sc, Zr content), cold-roll reduction and pre-aging treatment on the recrystallization behavior of cold-rolled sheets at brazing temperatures typically used during the manufacture of heat exchanger units. The analysis of recrystallization behavior is carried out through microstructural characterization and the results are compared with the behavior of a commercial, AA3xxx-based heat exchanger alloy.INTRODUCTION Control of recrystallization is of critical importance during brazing, which is a widely-used joining technique for aluminum alloys in aircraft structures (Heinz, 2000) and automotive heat exchangers (Miller, 2000; Marshall, 1993). Due to excessive local heat at brazing temperatures, the cold work texture of aluminum alloys in the cold-rolled sheets may undergo a local recrystallization process (Marshall, 1993). This leads to the formation of an inhomogeneous microstructure and thus anisotropic mechanical properties (Miller, 2000) and low corrosion resistance (Marshall, 1993) across the sheet. X800, a commonly-used Al-Mn alloy series for automotive heat exchangers applications, has been developed specifically for a higher strength as well as an enhanced corrosion resistance as opposed to the traditionally-used AA3003 alloy (Marshall, 1993). X800 alloys, however, exhibit a low recrystallization resistance at normal brazing temperatures, i.e. 590°C. In contrast, Al-Sc-Zr alloys have been shown to exhibit an extraordinary recrystallization resistance at such temperatures (Riddle, 2004) while also being corrosion resistant and possessing a high room-temperature strength (Fuller, 2002). This has been shown to be due to the formation of coherent, nanoscale Al3(ScZr) precipitates that effectively impede grain boundaries while also exhibiting very slow coarsening kinetics at high temperatures (Riddle, 2004; Jones, 2003; Ocenasek, 2001). In this study, we analyze the recrystallization behavior of X800 alloys under brazing conditions through introducing Sc and Zr into the system as well as varying the Mn and Mg content. The effect of processing route is also studied by introducing a pre-aging stabilization treatment as well as varying the cold-roll reduction prior to the final brazing anneal."

"IntroductionRocks in the Kirkland Lake district form part of the Timiskaming Group, a south-facing homoclinal sequence of wackes, conglomerate, trachytic flows and pyroclastic rocks and syenitic intrusive rocks. Hewitt (1963) indicates that the thickest section, about 5 km, of the Timiskaming Group rocks is attained in Lebel Township. Several writers (Thomson, 1948; Hewitt, 1963; Hyde, 1978; Jensen, 1978; and Downes, 1979) have observed that the Timiskaming Group unconformably overlies the Keewatin volcanics, particularly along the northern contact. Recent work by Downes (1979) in McGarry and McVittie townships to the east of Kirkland Lake has shown that much of what had formerly been classified as Timiskaming actually belongs to an older group of rocks, the Larder Lake Group (Jensen 1978).General GeologyA series of fluviatile, braided-stream sedimentary rocks (Hyde, 1978) form the oldest of the three major rock suites at Kirkland Lake. Conglomerates constitute a large proportion of these sedimentary rocks and typically contain a large percentage of a variety of locally derived alkalic rock clasts as well as the distinctive red jasper iron-formation pebbles (Fig. 1a). The associated wacke units can be massive to finely bedded and are interbedded with the conglomerate. They also contain a large alkalic tuffaceous component.Interbedded with these sedimentary rocks are alkalic extrusive rocks, including tuffs, agglomerates, breccias and flows, which represent episodes of fissure and explosive crater eruption (Cooke and Moorhouse, 1969). The tuffs, although dominantly alkalic in composition, are commonly reworked and contain sedimentary features such as graded bedding, scouring and crossbedding (Fig. 1 b). The trachytic flows are massive to porphyritic and outcrop mainly east of Kirkland Lake in the adjoining townships. Altered leucitic porphyritic flows, locally referred to as red and green spotted trachytes, commonly occur."

Most magnesium alloy sheets show low deformability in rolling. Edge cracks and transverse fractures are common difficulties. In addition, rolled sheets show well-developed basal texture <0001>//ND. The texture causes high anisotropy in mechanical properties and low formability in subsequent metal forming. Differential-speed rolling, where the upper and the lower rolls rotate at different speeds, introduces shear deformation through the thickness. Not rolling texture but shear texture evolves in the sheet so that the asymmetric rolling can be a method of texture control. However the primary slip system of the hcp alloy, is basal, the shear texture should be also basal. Differences between the two basal textures, i.e., the rolling texture and the shear texture, have not been understood completely. In this study, conventional (same-speed) rolling and differential-speed rolling have been applied to commercial AZ31B sheets at 623K. Microstructures, textures and mechanical properties of the rolled sheets before/after annealing are compared. It is found that the basal texture is more pronounced by the asymmetric rolling. On the other hand, the asymmetric rolling is effective to decrease the grain size and the planar anisotropy.

"TioMin Resources Inc. is evaluating the feasibility of exploiting the heavy mineral sands deposit at Natashquan on the north shore of the Gulf of St-Lawrence, Quebec. TioMin holds the exploration rights to 180 square kilometres, on which 1.6 billion tonnes of sands grading approximately 6% heavy minerals were outlined. The heavy minerals of value include magnetite, ilmenite/hematite, garnet, and zircon. An important part of this evaluation is the development and testing of a mineral separation flowsheet. Under a comprehensive mandate from TioMin, the Centre de recherches minerales (CRM) provided technical assistance to build and operate an on site primary concentrator pilot plant. This plant produced a 93 tonne concentrate, providing over 60 % heavy minerals. This concentrate was shipped to the CRM pilot plant in Quebec City. It was used for further flowsheet testing and for preparation of products and concentrates of heavy minerals with regard to marketing possibilities. This paper presents the flowsheet developed to produce these concentrates.IntroductionIn late 1992, an 11 tonne bulk sample of sand was collected from within the mineralized zone of the Natashquan deposit. This sample was processed over conventional spirals and wet tables at the pilot plant facilities of the Centre de recherches minerales (CRM) in Quebec City. A primary concentrate was produced, from which several 20 kg samples were forwarded to five research laboratories in North America and in Australia. Their tasks were to determine the mineralogical composition of this concentrate and the potential for recovery of marketable minerals from the heavy mineral sands. Satisfactory results obtained from this approach encouraged TioMin to proceed with a more detailed pilot plant program."

Mining induced ground movement and/or stress redistribution could cause ground instability issues. This is particularly true when the extraction of large stopes is done with one or two large production blasts. Often enough, it is the nearby mine development like haulage drifts and cross cuts that are influenced the most by production blasts. Proper and timely mitigation of ground control issues due to stress redistribution is required. This is usually done by drift rehabilitation involving the installation of secondary support system in the affected areas of the mine development which include; slashing, wire mesh, and in some cases the use of shotcrete liners. It is imperative that such rehabilitation be implemented to the mine infrastructure in a timely manner in order to avoid aggravated ground control problems and production delays. If the real time performance of the support system is captured, it would be possible to determine the timing for rehabilitation job. Birchtree Mine in Thompson, at the Vale Manitoba Operation, has begun mining the 84 Deep Orebody. One of the identified risks is the stability of the crusher room under mining induced stress redistribution. It is proposed to use the U-Cell technology to monitor the primary support system performance (rebar bolts and extension bolts) and monitor the real time performances of the bolt axial loads. The U-Cell technology is a 7-inch long, coupler load cell that is screwed onto the threaded portion of a rock bolt prior to installation. Rehabilitation in the vicinity of the crusher area where U-Cells are installed is recommended when the bolts have reached 70% of their yielding capacity. Catastrophic ground failure can be avoided by adding secondary support in a timely fashion. This paper presents a case study at Birchtree Mine in Thompson Manitoba, where the performance of primary ground support system is monitored and recorded during production.

THE object of this paper is to present a brief summary of the dust control system in use on the 3,825-foot level at the jaw crusher station, Lake Shore mine. During the years 1936 and 1937, dust survey reports were presented to the management showing that high dust concentrations were being created during operating periods. At that time, however, this crusher was running only an hour or so each shift, and it was felt that no large capital expenditure for dust control equipment could be justified. In order to afford some protection to the operators, a number of respirators then on the market were .tested and the &apos;Comfo&apos; respirator was adopted for use by the crusher-men. In 1938 this crusher began to handle a large share of the total mine tonnage and the hours of operation were increased. Further dust sampling showed increased dustiness with the longer operating time. It was also realized that the operators suffered considerable inconvenience if they wore their respirators throughout the shift. If the respirators were not worn, then dangerous amounts of dust were being inhaled. The fact that the crusher station was situated on the 3,825-foot level limited the means that could be employed to eliminate the dust hazard. At that rime there was not available the 5,000 c.f.m. of fresh air which would be required to sweep out or dilute0 the dust, and there was also no way of disposing of the contaminated air without passing it on for other men to breathe. Thus it became apparent that a self-contained dust disposal system would have to be installed.

"Anodes consumed in the electrolytic process for the production of primary aluminium are considered consumables. They need to be replaced at regular intervals of approximately one month. The so-called anode butts which are removed from the cells contain the metal supports (rods), cast iron thimbles, crust and residual carbon material. Cleaning is required to remove the waste material before the rods are fitted with new anodes. An inspection is required to ascertain if repairs to the rods are necessary. Presently, this inspection is carried out visually. ST AS, in 2004 in collaboration with Alcoa Deschambault, initiated a project to develop an automated inspection system. The objectives were to find a technical solution to perform these functions with a very simple system. Such a system was designed around ""artificial vision"". The inspection system developed uses only one fixed camera and does not require a separate step in the process for the anode rod assembly to perform the inspection. This paper presents the initial steps of the work performed to develop the equipment and software as well as a summary of the results obtained."

Aluminium industry has an increasing interest in the diminution of the energy consumption of the Hall-Heroult process by the reduction of the anode bottom covering with gas. Electrically isolating carbon-dioxide bubbles, produced at the anode, increase the ohmic resistance of the cell. As the gas production rate is determined by the applied current density, anode covering can be decreased only by a faster evacuation of the gas from the inter-electrode space. Among others, the inclination and curvature of the anode bottom promotes the release of the bubbles and thus decreases the mean value of the covering. Indeed, anode, insert in the molten cryolite bath has a square shape with horizontal bottom. However, inhomogeneous anode consumption, electro-erosion, bath circulation and the inclination of the bath-metal interface modify this shape gradually during electrolysis. Anode bottoms become inclined with rounded comers. This concentrates the gas generation to the center zone of the anode. As the bubble layer cannot be observed directly because of the hostile environment and the opacity of the bath, real scale air-water systems are used to study the impact of the anode geometry on the anode covering and the bubble induced flow. However, the physical properties of such a system are different than that we can found in the real cells. A simulator using the Lagrangian description of the bubble layer has been built and presented in earlier papers. This tool was used to investigate the effect of the anode inclination on gas covering and bath velocity, for both C02-cryolite and air-water system. Results obtained for the second system were compared to experimental data .

Currently, ores with high-grades of copper oxides and secondary sulfides have become increasingly scarce, which has encouraged industry to look for alternative raw materials to obtain copper. The problem is that primary sulfides are difficult to dissolve at near ambient conditions. Proposed hydrometallurgical processes have not been implemented beyond a pilot or demonstration scale. One of the principal disadvantages is that the majority of these processes are not viable with ores that contain less than 4% copper. One of the more recently proposed techniques involves the use of organic solvents in the dissolution of copper concentrates with a chalcopyrite content of between 20 and 30%, which has shown high efficiency. The present research explores the ability of this process to leach copper from low grade chalcopyritic ores (<4% Cu) at different temperatures ranging from 20 to 50°C. It was found that depending on the temperature, high percentages of copper were extracted in 40 to 100 minutes, using different oxidants. Additionally, distinct leaching behavior was observed with each oxidizing agent. In some cases, the extraction kinetics adjusted to the diffusion controlled shrinking core model.

Abstract- Approaches to mineral potential mapping based on weights of evidence generally use binary maps, whereas, real-world geospatial data are mostly multi-class in nature. The consequent reclassification of multi-class maps into binary maps is a simplification that might result in a loss of information. This paper describes results of using multi-class evidential maps in an extended weights-of-evidence model vis-à-vis results of using binary evidential maps in a simple-weights-ofevidence model. The study area in the south-central part of Aravalli province (western India) hosts a number of SEDEX-type base metal deposits in Proterozoic supracrustal rocks. Recognition criteria for base metal deposits were represented as both multi-class and binary evidential maps. The known mineral deposits were divided into two subsets, viz., the training and the validation subsets. The training subset was used to calculate, for the evidential maps, the weights, contrasts, and posterior probabilities and their variances. The distributions of expected frequencies of base metal deposits estimated from the posterior probabilities and the observed frequencies were compared using standard goodness-of-fit tests to verify conditional independence of the input evidential maps. The posterior probabilities from both the models were mapped and interpreted to classify the study area into zones favorable, permissive, and non-permissive for base metal deposit occurrence. As compared to the simple weights-of-evidence model, the extended weights-of-evidence model results in more robust and finely differentiated posterior probabilities in favorable and permissive zones and has a better prediction rate. The results also reveal that the statistical properties of the weights of evidence, the contrasts, and the posterior probabilities are not significantly degenerated by using multi-class evidential maps in weights-of-evidence modelling.

In view of the many changes which have taken place since 1950 in the rules of the Income Tax Act concerning the deduction of exploration and development expenses, many corporate taxpayers each year face the tedious task of determining which particular rules their unclaimed exploration and development expenses are subject to and in what sequence these expenses are to be claimed. Recent amendments to the Act have cleared up some of the mystery of the "ordering" of these deductions. This article examines the sequence in which various categories of exploration and development expenses are to be deducted in accordance with the terms of the Act as amended by Bill C-11.

The measurement of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from primary aluminium production and inventory of these emissions of carbon dioxide and PF Cs have become an important issue for primary aluminium producers. Most global producers have either voluntary emission goals or emissions limits established through national regulatory requirements. International good practices for inventory of these emissions for national governments are established through the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The current good practices, last updated in 2000, are being revised and are expected to be adopted by governments in the spring of 2006. There are a number of changes expected in the guidance that will impact how facilities account for their GHG emissions. This paper describes the changes to the guidance and the implications of these changes for aluminium producers.

The use of sidewall copper cooling systems to prolong furnace campaign life is becoming an accepted technology solution in the base metals industry. Tenova Pyromet has designed and installed a number of sidewall copper cooling systems in base metals furnaces, including the platinum industry. Apart from increasing the furnace campaign life through the formation of a stable freeze lining, a well-designed copper cooling system enables the plant operator to focus more on optimizing the process to achieve throughput and recovery targets, and to accommodate more varied and available concentrate feed blends. The paper discusses the design of sidewall copper cooling systems for copper smelting and converting furnaces to achieve the above objectives. More specifically, the design of copper cooling systems for top submerged lance furnaces are discussed. An overall increase in furnace heat losses has been raised as a concern for intensively cooled sidewalls. The paper explores the overall heat loss expectations for copper cooled furnaces versus traditional refractory lined furnaces. In addition, the potential use of alternative cooling media is discussed. INTRODUCTION Base metal smelting and converting furnace technologies have been evolving continuously over the past century to satisfy the need for higher throughput, improved efficiency, and longer campaign life. To accommodate these demands, in particular higher smelting intensity and throughput, furnace bath containment systems had to improve. The use of pure refractory lining systems has slowly made room for the use of more intensively cooled lining systems (Joubert, Nikolic, Bakker & Mc Dougall, 2016). These cooling systems evolved from external shell cooling, such as shower or film cooling, to copper plate coolers extending into the furnace refractory lining, and high intensity stave or panel coolers (Verscheure, Kyllo, Filzwieser, Blanpain & Wollants, 2006). Consequently, an increasing number of base metal smelting and converting furnaces are equipped with copper cooling systems, including flash furnaces (Bryk, Ryselin, Honkasalo, & Malmstrom, 1958; Yasuda, Motomura & Kawasaki, 2014; Marx, Shapiro & Henning, 2010), top submerged lance primary smelting and fuming furnaces (Bhappu, Larson & Tunis, 1994; Kim, Lee & Lee, 2000; MacRae & Steinborn, 2018), top submerged lance converting furnaces (Viviers & Hines, 2005; Nikolic, Hogg & Voigt, 2018), primary platinum smelting electric furnaces (Nelson, Stober, Ndlovu, De Villiers & Wanblad, 2005; Jones, 2005; Hundermark, De Villiers & Ndlovu, 2006; Mc Dougall, 2013), and electric slag cleaning furnaces (Joubert, Nourse, Masters & Hundermark, 2005).

Given the limited number of new plant construction, focus is turning to the optimization of existing metallurgical roasting plants. To meet the goals of high process efficiency with limited capital expenditure, plant owners are looking for new strategies, including digitization and expert support. As a supplier for numerous roasting, gas cleaning and sulfuric acid plants, Outotec has intensified its effort in recent years to develop solutions to accommodate increasing customer need. This article presents a short review on how Outotec is applying advanced control tools for the fluidized bed industry. Focus will be given on how to transfer the existing technology (used in selected Zinc roasting plants for over a year now) to copper roasting. Outotec has developed the Pretium Roaster Optimizer, a system based on heat and mass-balanced simulation models. Direct experience with this technology will be shared and will highlight similarities to the Partial and Sulfate Copper roasting processes. Pretium detects equipment and plant bottlenecks and provides consistency in process development. INTRODUCTION Fluidized bed reactors have been used for commercial-scale zinc and copper roasting since the 1950s. While the principles of roasting remain unchanged, over time, the technology has advanced to improve process control of roasting plants. In the past, environmental and safety standards were the driving forces for improvement of equipment and plant design. Today, the emphasis is on plant efficiency and optimization. Another change has come in process control philosophy. While plant control and operation have traditionally been the responsibility of owner/operators, they have now shifted to include both integrated digital tools and specific know-how from engineering companies. This can be seen from the earliest design stages through commissioning and into production, as evidenced by zinc roasting plants in Mexico, Brazil and Turkey.

Project managers aim to maximise the NPV of their projects, but don&apos;t always appreciate the relationship between mine throughput, project value and the discount rate being used to evaluate their projects. Rate of production or throughput is perhaps one of the most crucial decisions a project manager must make, but if this choice is made arbitrarily, much effort may be spent on a feasibility study that does not optimise project value. The timing of the study in relation to the stage of exploration is examined and simple techniques are presented that project engineers and managers can use to home in on a production rate which will give their project the greatest chance of success.

"Horizontal wells in coal seams, Qinshui basin, China are prone to wellbore instability problems induced by drilling, completion and production operations due to the presence of natural cleat network, anisotropy with regard to permeability, brittleness and mechanically weak property of the coal rock. The mechanism of wellbore instability in coal seams is very different from that in conventional formations, the traditional wellbore stability study methods therefore, are not proper for wellbore stability analysis in coal.In this study, the mechanism and controlling of wellbore stability of coal seams in the Qinshui basin was investigated through theoretical modeling, laboratory experiment and field operation. Firstly, a new physical model of wellbore stability for highly-cleated coalbed was proposed, considering the combined effect of mechanical mechanism and reservoir characteristics, specifically, taking the effect of reservoir pore pressure in the vicinity of the wellbore on the wellbore stability into account. Then experiments on the triaxial stress evaluation were conducted at laboratory where rock mechanical parameters such as Poisson's ratio, Young's modulus, compressive strength, tensile strength, angle of internal friction and cohesion ability were measured respectively. The in situ stress at different depths in four wells of Zheng 1-303, Zheng 1-308, Zheng 1-309, and Zheng 1-310 in the Zhengzhuang were calculated, and the collapse pressure and formation breakdown pressure were predicted through the theoretical model we developed. Finally, by comparing the maximum collapse pressure and minimum breakdown pressure of the four wells in the coal as well as in the roof and floor of the coal seams, the fluid weight window for safe drilling in each coal seams was determined, and appropriate approaches against anti-sloughing in coal seams, Qinshui basin were applied in the field operation.The wellbore stability was found not only related to the wellbore pressure, but also affected by the pressure in the reservoir through the theoretical model. The fluid weight window for safe drilling in each coal seams varies with the coefficient of wellbore stability in the model. The laboratory experiment results indicate that the roof and floor of 3 # coal in Qinshui basin has high breaking strength, high heterogeneity, and are easy to collapse and breakdown. In addition, the whole rock mineral analysis shows that 3 # coal in the Duanshi block has high clay content, resulting in the phenomenon of hydration swelling as clay encountered water, and leading to unstable coal and extreme large drilling uncertainties. Due to the effect of the unstable rock mechanical properties of the roof and floor formation on the wellbore stabilizing, drilling parameters, drilling fluid performance and BHA were optimized during the drilling process according to the formation properties, rock mechanical properties and drilling techniques in the field operation."

"The North Star and Don Jon copper deposits lie beneath the waters of Thompson Lake, which is 12 miles east of Flin Flon, Manitoba. The deposits were discovered during the years 1949 and 1951 by diamond drilling done in the vicinity of pyritic showings on the shores of two small islands in the lake. The Don Jon ore body lies 1, 700 feet southeast of the North Star orebody and is connected with the North Star mine workings by a crosscut on the 600-foot level (Figure 1 ).Production began on January 1, 1955, at a combined rate of 200 tons per day. The ore is trucked, on 24 miles of highway, to the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited mill at Flin Flon.Regional GeologyRocks in the Thompson Lake area are Precambrian volcanics, ranging in composition from andesite to rhyolite, with related tuffs and breccia. These rocks have a general north-south trend and are steeply dipping. The area is part of the Lac Aimee fault block, which probably is the southward extension of a south-plunging syncline now thrust some miles to the north. This regional deformation has produced many subsidiary zones of intense shearing and crumpling. It is in two of these zones of shearing and drag-folding that the orebodies occur. The only recognizable intrusive is a narrow diorite sill which trends northeasterly near the west shore of Thompson Lake.The North Star MineA pyritic showing, carrying some chalcopyrite, was discovered around the year 1930 on the west side of a small island near the west shore of Thompson Lake. This ground was included in a group of claims acquired by the Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Co., Limited in 1947.In the years 1949 to 1951, a diamond drilling program outlined a copper sulphide orebody. This ore zone comes to surface beneath the lake, about 300 feet north of the pyritic showing on the island."
