Size by size recoveries and pentlandite liberation data from image analysis were used to evaluate plant tests of pentlandite flotation and pentlandite/pyrrhotite middlings flotation from pyrrhotite in a circuit treating low grade magnetic intermediates at the Strathcona Mill. Raising the pH with lime gave improved selectivity for liberated pentlandite but there were major losses of middlings unless the circuit was pulled hard indicating the need for finer regrinding. However, size by size recoveries at the normal regrind showed that, while the pentlandite recovery improved in the finer ranges, the pyrrhotite recovery also increased leading to little selectivity in any size range. A much finer regrind gave greatly improved selectivity in all size classes suggesting that 'surface polishing' as well as liberation effects were being seen. Using liberation data from image analysis of the products, surface polishing accounted for over 99 % of the improvement in selectivity. Unreasonable recoveries of more highly liberated particles were observed for liberation analysis by volume fraction but showed the expected trend in recovery when the analysis was based on surface liberation. The surface liberation data showed that the improved pentlandite recoveries after finer regrinding were to more than 90 % caused by improved liberation with the remainder contributed by surface polishing effects. The practical implications of this work are that i) the comparison of particle grades with product grades allows to estimate the effect of regrinding on co-flotation/entrainment, ii) surface liberation models should be used for evaluating recoverabilities by flotation and iii) regrind circuits may be set up to ensure that all particles go through the mill or that only the coarse fraction is reground depending on the surface scrubbing found to be required.

The term ?cost? is too small when describing the destructive power of safety incidents for mining companies. Breaches in employee or environmental safety are felt way beyond the bottom-line: human life can be taken; ecosystems tarnished; the ire of peoples, media and government inflamed; significant halting of production; and high levels of legal and financial challenges. According to a recent survey of Mining executivesi, ?ensuring workforce safety? was the most important issues identified above any other, with a plurality of 31 percent, reigning above capital projects, product efficiency, and equipment reliability. We accept that safety is a most paramount issue, yet for many reasons we keep approaching the problem the same way we have in the past. We need to stop doing the same things decade over decade and try something new. New innovations are significantly changing the fundamentals of how mining companies explore, excavate, produce, refine and distribute their valuable commodities. Technologies such as visualization, analytics, location awareness, and gaming simulation are making these enterprises smarter. Now, attention turns to an area we?ve long held as integral to our business: safety. By using the same breakthrough technologies that are changing our business, we can now boldly imagine ? and credibly strive for ? a world of zero incidents.

"Sulphuric acid atmospheric leaching of nickel saprolite / garnierite ores was proposed in the early twentieth century, prior to the development of the pressure acid leaching process for limonite ores. Sulphuric acid leaching with alkali addition for iron precipitation as jarosite has been considered periodically since the early 1970s, shortly after the development of the jarosite process for iron control in zinc refining. In the late 1990’s a series of flowsheets were proposed and tested involving simultaneous atmospheric leaching, iron precipitation and acid regeneration. These were considered particularly suited to sequential leaching of limonite and saprolite ores. A number of laterite sulphuric acid leaching processes utilising this chemistry have been put into commercial operation. Similar sequential leaching flow sheets involving precipitation of iron as goethite were also developed and piloted. This paper will firstly describe some of the important historical developments of both the jarosite and goethite processes. It will then provide descriptions of the commercialised processes involving alkali jarosite/alunite precipitation, with special emphasis on the downstream impurity removal requirements necessary for efficient recovery of nickel and cobalt from solution.INTRODUCTION This paper is a summary and extension of previous works with which the authors have been involved, on the subject of sulphuric acid leaching of nickel laterites (Adams, et al., 2004), (Liu H. , Gillaspie, Lewis, Neudorf, & Barnett, 2004), (White, Miller, & Napier, 2006), (White, 2009), (White & Gillaspie, 2013), (White & Gillaspie, 2015). Some of the historical developments of both the jarosite and goethite leaching-precipitation processes will be described, followed by a description of the commercialised sequential nickel laterite leaching processes, involving alkali jarosite/alunite precipitation and acid regeneration, with a comparison to the equivalent goethite based processes. These will include Jarosite Atmospheric Leaching (JAL), Goethite Atmospheric Leaching (GAL) and combined Pressure Acid Leaching – Atmospheric Leaching, termed EPAL®. There will also be an explanation of the downstream impurity removal requirements necessary for efficient recovery of nickel and cobalt from solution."

In this study, the fusion zone microstructure of tungsten inert gas weld of a directionally solidified NhAl-base alloy was examined by the standard metallographic techniques involving the use of optical, analytical scanning and transmission electron microscopes equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer. Fusion zone cracking was observed to be closely associated with interdendritic secondary solidification microconstituents identified as consisting of y, y' and NiMo (Y) phases. Depression of solidification temperature to the terminal ternary eutectic reaction temperature of the system during cooling is suggested as an important factor contributing to the fusion zone cracking.

An investigation was carried out by Mintek to investigate the influence of a range of alloying additions (vanadium, cobalt, zirconium, antimony and germanium) on the formability and hardenability of alloys with gold content >90 wt%. This paper reports on the hardening mechanisms that can be utilised to increase the hardness of gold (>90 wt% Au) by conventional alloying, as well as the hardening effect obtained by alloying with specific elements. Preparation methods for the alloys are described, which include the steps of melting, annealing, quenching, cold working and age hardening. Focus is given specifically on alloys that were developed at Mintek with a gold content >90 wt%, which are not only harder, but exhibit good resistance to tarnishing and corrosion.

Fuel cells have tremendous potential as power sources but much fundamental research is still required. One key component of the research is the experimental set-up used. In particular, the placement of the reference electrode is extremely significant in measuring the half-cell overpotential of solid oxide fuel cells, since differences in area, misalignments, and also differences in the kinetics of the working and counter electrodes can cause both scaling errors and frequency distortions of the measured impedance. The impedance of thin solid electrolyte cells of different electrode geometries has been calculated using the finite element method and the results compared to experimental values obtained for the oxygen reduction reaction on platinum.

Introduction The Hedley mine, perhaps better known as- the Nickel Plate mine, is one of the outstanding properties of southern British Columbia. Discovered in 1898 by Woollison and Arundell, prospectors, the property was bonded in 1899 to M. K. Rodgers for the Marcus Daly Estate, of Butte, and development was started the same year. From the high grade of the ore outcrop, and its colour, due to oxidation of the arsenopyrite, it was not difficult to open up and trace the showing. The Nickel Plate ore-shoot, which apparently had been easy to follow on surface, was more difficult to trace underground. In 1903, prospecting on an adjoining property, the Sunnyside, showed commercial ore at surface, but it was only after two years' work that the ore-body was defined and shipments started. From this property, $1,200,000 have been taken out. Prospecting was also carried on on the IXL, Climax, Copper Cliff, Mound, Bulldog, Exchange, Silver Plate, Gold Plate, and other properties, all of which had surface showings, but up to date only the Nickel Plate, Iron Duke, Morning, and Sunnyside have produced commercial ore. In 1904, the Bulldog looked like a very promising mine, but it failed to make good. In 1905, the Sunnyside No. 1 was in the limelight, but it also failed to make the grade. In 1906, an outcrop on the Sunnyside No. 3 looked interesting. Subsequent work. on this claim produced $840,000, and at the same time ore which yielded $400,000 was mined from the Sunnyside No. 4. In 1908, the Nickel Plate ore-body entered a lean zone and, as the diamond drill failed to give satisfactory results, the Daly Estate, after making a profit of $1,151,000, sold the property to the Hedley Gold Mining Company, Limited, for $760,000, retaining, however, a large interest.

"In addition to the actual energy consumed, billing is dependent on the peak load and the power factor. The lower the power factor goes, the higher will be the penalty the consumer pays. The principles of a power factor regulator, the two ways of improving the power factor and methods for calculating the capacitor values required will be described.The rate structure of the utility company is founded on three cornerstones: the energy consumed during a given period of time and two penalties imposed when the power factor is low or the power demand is high. Even though the normal consumption of a customer might be 10 kW, with a peak demand of 20 kW only once a month, the wiring and associated equipment at the input to the customer's plant will have to accommodate this peak demand. The power company has no means of forecasting these demands and cannot therefore provide the additional equipment necessary. So it exacts a penalty, and the customer must take all possible steps to avoid these peak power demands. This can be accomplished by using an automatic peak load regulator which will selectively disconnect the loads which are not essential in the operation of a plant .The principles of such a controller will be described.Principles of power factor regulatorsThe operating principles of a power factor regulator will now be described. It might be asked why the power factor of an electrical installation in a mine, or a factory, should be corrected at all, but there is a simple answer. The initial attempt to gain access to the potash beds was unsuccessful, however, subsequent attempts were successful and today there are ten operating potash mines in Saskatchewan. In this paper we will provide a brief overview of the historical and current Potash industry in Saskatchewan.

Following the closure of the Glencore Zinc Brunswick mine, the Glencore Brunswick Smelter has transitioned to treating external feeds, and currently treats a number of secondary Pb-Zn concentrates. Processing these concentrates has in some cases been challenging due to the diverse mineralogy of the feeds. Certain feeds are difficult to ignite or show inadequate sulphur removal during oxidation on the sinter strand, while in other cases, combinations of feeds produce a sinter with unsuitable properties for further handling. This paper discusses two methods developed in collaboration with XPS Consulting & Testwork Services to characterize these feeds prior to processing them and to identify which ones are most likely to pose challenges during processing.

"High Pressure Grinding Roll (“HPGR”) technology is applied in a broadening range of minerals processing applications for relatively wet or moist materials. HPGR grinding of dry material or involving drying and air classification is more common, for example in cement manufacturing. A number of minerals processing plants are also operating with dry material, either due to process reasons, such as considerations of preceding or subsequent process stages, or as dictated by local conditions of arid areas and scarcity of water. The present world-wide expectation of decreasing availability of water supply urges us to look for alternatives that minimize water consumption.Recently established and envisaged future HPGR applications with dry ores have indicated that the technology of dry crushing and classification as practiced in cement and limestone grinding can be applied in minerals processing. Moreover, dry technology could very well be applied for generating a final fine product at sizes near or below 100 microns, as may be required for beneficiation by, for instance, flotation, magnetic separation or tank leaching.Dry HPGR grinding requires special attention in maintaining suitable process economics, when considering power input in grinding, drying and classification. In some cases, HPGR capacity and roll surface wear life may be negatively affected by a lack of moisture in the feed.This publication summarizes some of the features of, and experiences in dry HPGR applications. This includes design aspects of the classification system and discussion of the wear protection of the roll surfaces. The paper also includes examples of operational experiences of dry practices in minerals processing and cement plants."

INTRODUCTIONFalconbrirdge Nickel Mines Limited, incorporated in 1928 is a major product of nickel, copper,coba1t and other metals and minerals. The Canadian Nickel Division operating facilities in the Sudbury Area currently includes seven mines, two concentrators, and a smelter.For many years at all concentrators, improv0mcnts in metal recoveries have been continually under investigation. One area was to improve the flotation cell performance. This paper will deal with mechanical and operating modifications to the cells at the Strathcona and Falconhridge Ni-Cu sulphide concentrators, at the Sudbury Operations.One of the prime means to mineral beneficiation processing has been, and will continue to be, the basic froth flotation cell. The efficient operation of a flotation cell is the key to satisfactory metal selectivity and recovery. The essence of good design is simplicity. Changes to cell design can contribute to a significant improvement in metal recovery.Over the past 10 years, modifications to the flotation cells have contributed to an improvement of some 3-4” in mineral recovery. "Solvent extraction is the one of the most common techniques for recovering metal ions from aqueous systems. However, it is not efficient in the extraction of low concentration metal ions from aqueous solutions. Predispersed solvent extraction (PDSE) is an alternative method for solvent extraction which implies colloidal liquid aphrons as extracting agents in order to reach higher interfacial area and lower reagent consumption. This work investigated important parameters in PDSE of nickel ions from dilute aqueous solutions by fractional factorial design of experiments. Four experimental parameters, the initial extractant concentration, initial surfactant concentration, equilibrium pH and phase volume ratio (organic to aqueous ratio) were investigated. The important parameters were determined as well as important interactions between these parameters. It was found that extractant concentration, phase volume ratio, and equilibrium pH are the most significant experimental parameters. However, the interaction between surfactant concentration and other parameters was determined as significant interactions.INTRODUCTIONNickel is one of the key components found in cars, mobile phones, rechargeable batteries, kitchen appliances, and steel industry (Anyadike, 2002). It is one of the most important metals produced by Canada which is in the five top nickel producers in the world. Despite a 24% decrease in the nickel prices from 2011 to 2014 the nickel global mine production increased by 36% between these years (U.S. Geological Survey, 2015; Nickel - Statista Dossier, 2015), which shows the increasing demand for nickel. This high demand leads producers to consider the production of nickel from low grade ores and other secondary sources such as process wastewaters. The removal of nickel ions from process wastewater is also important due to environmental considerations. Nickel is known to be a human carcinogen and it may cause serious lung and kidney problems, pulmonary fibrosis, gastrointestinal distress, and skin dermatitis if it exceeds the critical level (Borba et al., 2006; Fu & Wang, 2011)."

Ammoniacal pressure leaching operations have been in commercial use at the Fort Saskatchewan refinery of Sherritt International Corporation since 1954. Recent improvements have significantly increased the capacity of this circuit. The computer modeling of this process has proved to be a valuable tool in facilitating the evaluation of different operating scenarios in an effective manner. Reagent response in the ammonia leach of nickel and cobalt sulphides is examined using the dynamic process simulation capabilities of IDEAS(TM) software. The dynamic simulation enables accurate measurement of the sensitivity of the process to variables such as temperature, feed rate and ammonia concentration as well as compartmental analysis of metals concentration, pulp density, vent gas composition, and the formation of specific complexes. The complexity of the ammonia leach process makes it a logical choice for evaluation by computational analysis. The methodology for dynamic modeling of a pressure leach process is presented.

This paper provides an introduction to wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) and its successful application to the beneficiation of rare earth element (REE) enriched eudialyte. The analysis includes an in-depth reporting of the deportment of key elements as well as a statistical interpretation of the relative importance of operational parameters including magnetic field intensity, flow velocity, and matrix loading density. Conclusions are drawn on the relative success of the technology, potential areas for process improvement, and the research direction that continues to be investigated. Three original equipment manufacturer (OEM) technologies were subjected to a series of screening and characterization tests to identify the optimal operating parameter set to magnetically beneficiate eudialyte from Norra Kärr, Sweden. Upon the completion of the characterization test it was apparent that the Metso HGMS technology was superior with respect to REE recovery and gangue rejection for the Norra Kärr composite. The Metso HGMS was then subjected to a series of verification tests to confirm the repeatability and reproducibility of the system.

The total current inventory of mature fine tailings is estimated to be nearly 850 million m³. Pressure has come to bear on the industry to accelerate its tailings management practices and prevent this inventory from steadily growing. The present paper describes the treatment, management and reclamation of fluid fine tailings. New technologies being evaluated include: i) Thin layered - fines dominated deposits, ii) Deep - fines dominated deposits, iii) Fines enriched sand deposits, and finally iv) water capped disposal in end pit lakes. A brief overview for each of the methods of treatment and disposal for fluid fine tailings is provided.

"Income tax legislation is not keeping pace with federal and provincial environmental legislation. There is a vast array of new environmental regulations at various stages of implementation across the country. Unfortunately, there are serious concerns about the deductibility of significant payments which mining companies will be required to make under these new rules, and the Department of Finance seems to be reluctant to act on these concerns. IntroductionWhile the federal and provincial governments are racing ahead with obvious fervour to introduce new envirorunental laws, the tax rules relating to envirorunental costs are being allowed to lag far behind. In a nutshell, the tax treatment of envirorunental costs is not keeping pace with the new envirorunental legislation.One of the most serious concerns of the mining industry is the deductibility of mine reclamation or closing costs. The producing provinces are well advanced down the road toward mandating upfront deposits, bonds, or similar financial guarantees to protect the envirorunent from the operation and eventual closure of a mine. These requirements are not small. In some instances, they can amount to tens of millions of dollars. And, if there is no tax deduction for these sums when they are set aside by the mining company, then the costs have to be paid out of the company's after-tax earnings."
