Accompanying global energy shortage and high energy prices, shale gas has been the focus of exploration and it has attracted great attention from both academia and industry. The combination of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing enables the extraction of huge quantities of shale gas from impermeable shale formations. During the process of hydraulic fracturing, great amounts of water, sand and chemicals must be injected into the shale formation at a high pressure, which may trigger seismicity. Such events could occur due to the presence of faults or the reactivation of these potential faults. Shale is the main component of source rock in the Sichuan Basin, China, and has the greatest contribution to the natural gas of the basin. In order to investigate the fracturing mechanism of shale in the Sichuan Basin, China, a series of rock fracture tests under triaxial compression were carried out in the laboratory in order to investigate the hydraulic fracturing behavior in relation to the seismicity. Based on the high multichannel waveform recording system, the detailed spatio-temporal distribution of acoustic emission due to micro-cracking was used to examine the deformation and fracture behavior of shale. In addition, the effects of confining pressure on the deformation and fracture in shale under triaxial compression by acoustic emission monitoring and X-ray computed tomography were discussed in the paper. The experimental results indicate that the shale samples demonstrate brittle fracture behavior. The confining pressure has a great effect on the complexity of the fracture planes and the spatial distribution of acoustic emissions, but few contributions to the location of the major hydraulic fracturing plane. The foliation of shale plays a dominant role in the rupture process and the geometry of the major hydraulic fracturing plane. The high confining pressure increases the strength and restrains the deformation of shale during compression process. These results shed some light on the understanding of onset of hydraulic fracture initiation not only for shale gas exploration and production, but also for CO2 geological storage and underground energy storage.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Red Dog Project in Alaska is being developed by Cominco Alaska, a subsidiary of Corninco Ltd. of Canada, and the Nana Regional Corporation, one of the 12 native corporations created by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of1971.The State of Alaska is also a very key part of the project through its financing of the transportation system for Red Dog. Red Dog will be the third, and largest, of Cominco's Arctic mining developments in the past thirteen years, after the Black Angel Mine in Greenland, which started up in 1973, and the Polaris Mine in the Canadian Arctic, which began production six years ago in 1982.Red Dog is one of the world's great mineral deposits, with a unique combination of large size, high-grade, and a waste-to- ore ratio less than I: I, which will make it the world's largest, and one of the lowest cost zinc producers, when at full production. The present mineral reserve is estimated to be 85 million tons , at a grade of 17.1010 zinc, 5% lead, and 2.4 ounces per ton of silver. Based on the current production forecast, this will give a mine life of almost 50 years, and the deposit is still open in two directions, although the structure is becoming thinner at depth. As well, there is a satellite zone about one mile south of the main deposit which could contain up to another 8 million tons of mineral at Red Dog grades or better. This is not presently included in the reserve due to potential processing difficulties.In relation to other zinc deposits, Red Dog is the second largest ever discovered, smaller than the original Broken Hill deposit in Australia, but larger than Cominco's own Sullivan Mine in British Columbia, which is number three. It is quite possible that, when the area is adequately explored, Red Dog will be number one."

"Sensor based sorting faces two main challenges related to limited capacity/throughput and the ability of sensors to accurately discriminate based on estimated grades. This paper is aimed at improving sensor discrimination. Sensors have the ability to measure more than a single response. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) can detect and provide concentration information about a range of elements. Similarly, electromagnetic sensors (EMs) can generate magnetic susceptibility and conductivity responses over a range of frequency levels. The sensors thereby provide a response signature rather than a simply a single response that is a proxy for a metal grade. Furthermore, integrating sensor responses can improve the discrimination of metal bearing rock from waste. A study was conducted on a gold ore to assess sortability using XRF and EM sensors. A multi-variable regression approach was used to develop models that included a range of responses. Correlations improved significantly when compared to single response correlations. The approach showed that both positive and negative correlations contributed to the improved correlations. Stepwise regression simplified the models and showed that 2nd order interaction effects can be important. The approach also showed that combining different responses can improve discrimination accuracy. An important outcome of the study was that an ore that had been consider not to be sortable was determined to be sortable through the application of an approach that used the sensor responses in a more intelligent manner.INTRODUCTIONMining is aimed at recovering valuable minerals from their host rocks. Many methods are used to recover valuable minerals, and finding efficient and cost-effective ways is the key in research and production. . Ore sorting technology is fitting this definition. It not only discards waste rocks away from the concentrator but also recovers metal bearing ore particles that could be lost to the waste dump. The benefits of ore sorting include increased energy efficiency and reduced water and reagent usage in the downstream operations (Bamber, 2008; Gunson, Klein, Veiga, & Dunbar, 2012; Mazhary & Klein, 2015; Robben, Wotruba, Robben, von Ketelhodt, & Kowalzcyk, 2013)."

"Peñoles is a mining group with integrated operations for the smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals, and it is also a chemicals producer. Peñoles is the world’s foremost producer of refined silver, metallic bismuth and sodium sulphate. It is also the leading Latin American producer of refined gold, lead and zinc. The Met-Mex Peñoles Zinc Plant commenced operations in 1973 with an annual production capacity of 105,000 t/y zinc. Since then, production capacity has increased, and at present, it stands at 240,000 t/y zinc. In this paper, the leaching process and particularly the operation of the jarosite circuit is reviewed, specifying process improvements to treat high iron calcines.INTRODUCTIONTwenty years ago the Electrolytic Zinc Plant in Peñoles was treating high quality zinc concentrates with low concentrations of iron (~7.5 wt.%) and silica (1.8 wt.%). Nowadays the quality of zinc concentrates is poor with a typical iron content of around 11 wt.% and silica at 2.0 wt.%. This has created numerous processing problems in our roast-leach-purification- electrolysis sections. In order to meet customer requirements it is necessary to find processing solutions to assure the operational continuity of the plant. These processing solutions are the focal point of this paper.REVIEW OF THE LEACHING PROCESSThe purpose of the leaching process is to recover the metals, mainly zinc, through a series of extraction stages with sulphuric acid solutions, which progressively increases the zinc dissolution. After the series of acidification stages, the solution, which is rich in iron, is sent to the jarosite circuit to separate zinc from iron (Garcia & Valdez, 1996). The first step of the leaching process is the neutral leach circuit which produces a zinc sulphate solution that is sent to the purification section for the removal of impurities such as cadmium, cobalt and copper. Then this solution is sent to the tank house to feed the electrolytic cells."

"Abstract - The High-grade Zone (HGZ) was discovered 5000 ft (1520 m) below surface in the hangingwall of the existing orebody, 46 years after the Red Lake mine first went into production. The very rich ore of the HGZ is characterized by a remarkably abundant distribution of visible native gold. The location of this discovery challenged conventional wisdom at the time and its genesis has yet to be fully understood. Textural observations of ore within carbonate veins as well as crosscutting relationships suggest peak-metamorphic emplacement for at least some of the gold. Post-lamprophyre dike remobilization of gold is locally observed in the HGZ. Structure and dilatancy were the key elements for localizing ore at the Red Lake mine. Ore occurs where a fault trend intersected folded ultramafic volcanic rock that created a semi-permeable cap-rock to ore fluids ascending the "feeder" structure. This was enhanced by strong competency contrasts between the eastern ultramafic rocks, felsic volcanic rocks west of the HGZ, and the mafic volcanic host to ore - an exceptional environment for the development of protracted dilatant fluid pathways for gold deposition.Development in the HGZ began in February 2000 and reached commercial production on January 1, 2001 at a capital cost of US $53 million. December 2001 reserves are 1.9 million short tons (1.73 Mt) at an average cut and diluted grade of 2.05 ounces per ton gold (70.5 g/t) containing 3.8 million ounces of gold. The extremely rich ore presented a unique challenge in grade estimation for the Geology Department at the mine. The historic cutting factor was replaced by a statistical method as more data were collected from mining and mill reconciliation. The mine produced 503 000 ounces of gold in 2001. Exploration at the mine is targeting HGZ-type ore formation within basalts associated with the intersections of fluid pathways and folded ultramafic rocks, as well as other targets."

"The Hedley and Grant formulation for pillar strength has been widely adopted by the South Africa hard rock mining industry. Today, some forty year later, this formula still provides the foundation for pillar strength calculations when designing for stability and utilising pillars in mine layouts. Various mine specific back analyses were conducted to adjust the equation parameters based on underground observations of failed pillars and comparing to the pillar stresses calculated using numerical models. In all these instances, the influence of shear stresses was ignored. The key to more representative pillar strength estimation is a better understanding of the pillar loading environment.In this paper, special mining cases are evaluated and the existence of shear stresses on the pillar loading environment is illustrated. By revisiting some back analysis data for optimisation of the equation parameters, recommendations were made in respect of the influence of the shear stress component and on how this should be considered in determining the pillar strength.INTRODUCTIONCommon practice on flat dipping, shallow and intermediate depth ore deposits in the South African hard rock and coal mining industry is to exploit the mineral resource using a room-and-pillar layout. The design methodology is mainly based on a Factor of Safety (FoS) approach, where the strength of the pillar is compared to the effective load on the pillar. In these environments, FoS values of 1.6 are applied as it was found to correspond to a probability of failure in coal mines of 0.001. As discussed by Ryder and Jager (2002) page 279: “For lack of anything else more substantial, the figure of 1.6 is generally used in hard rock pillar design in South Africa”. Dependant on the designed purpose of the pillar, the FoS might be selected as high as 2.0 where long term stability is required. The factors directly influencing the FoS include the pillar height (which is linked to the mining height), effective pillar width, a rock-strength factor and extraction ratio."

"The property of Chesterville Mines, Limited, is in McGarry township, Timiskaming district, Ontario, about 25 miles east of Kirkland Lake. It consists of a group of fifteen claims that extend northeast from the KerrAddison mine for a distance of 2 miles.In June, 1906, two groups of prospectors left the town of Chesterville, Ontario, to prospect in northern Ontario. Silver had been discovered 3 years before at Cobalt and the large profits of this young mining camp were the principal incentive to extending the field of exploration northward. One group consisted of Dr. Reddick, Edward Flynn, John Hummel, William Knott, and Colin Cameron. The other group comprised J. T. Kearns, Herman Hummel, W. G. Barkley, and J. Elliott.The two groups travelled north by train to Haileybury and thence to Larder lake by canoe. Camps were pitched on the northeast arm of the lake, and within a short time a discovery was made by Edward Flynn of the first party, who found gold on the property now owned by Kerr-Addison Gold Mines, Limited. Herman Hummel and J. T. Kearns shortly afterwards made the second discovery, on what is now the Chesterville property. These discoveries, made some years prior to those at Porcupine and Kirkland Lake, are believed to be the first in that part of northern Ontario.The Hummel-Kearns claims were incorporated in the following year under the name of Chesterville Larder Lake Gold Mining Company, Limited. It was not, however, until 30 years later, in 1936, following the increased premium on gold, that sufficient capital was placed in the treasury of the Company to carry out an extensive diamond drilling programme. This exploratory drilling was started early in 1937 under the direction of Leo. J. Kearns, and a large body of ore was intersected in the first drill hole. Underground work was started in 1938, a mill was built, and the first gold brick was poured on July 29th, 1939."

"Mining operations generate an enormous amount of data that is difficult to organize, analyze and act on. These data require an extremely broad range of experts to investigate and manage the cross-disciplinary information. The data collects in paper files, diverse databases, historians, stand-alone applications, and excel files. This collection of sources represents everything from monthly, weekly, or daily inputs to real-time feeds or sporadic unscheduled entries. With the operational complexities ever increasing and fewer engineers per mine, an efficient operation is becoming more and more challenging. Engineers are typically burdened with data collection, clean up, and administrative efforts leaving very limited time for engineering assessment and/or optimization analysis. Often optimization becomes limited to the analysis of equipment uptime through existing field automation systems. A great portion of the field data is tucked away in historians seldom reaching those engineers who might leverage the data. Few mine operators have the time or budget to re-architect their operations data collection or management practice, so solutions must enable improvements without requiring expensive or time-consuming implementation. This presentation highlights examples where the aforementioned challenges are addressed using a solution framework designed to enable: 1) data integration and connectivity, 2) monitoring and opportunity recognition, and 3) engineering workflow automation. The initiative extends the concepts and success proven in the automation market segment to all disciplines across the mine operations. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry by its very nature spends a great deal of its capital on equipment maintenance and replacement. In addition, periodic shutdowns due to equipment failure are typically very costly in terms of interrupted operations. Keeping mining equipment running at peak performance and avoiding costly shutdowns can make a huge difference in the overall return from mining operations. Today, information can be make available that can go a long way towards spotting equipment issues and permitting timely intervention to avoid costly unplanned shutdowns. That said, gathering all of the information from numerous points on many different pieces of equipment necessary to enhance overall equipment effectiveness presents its own daunting issues."

"In this study, flow-through experiments in fractured rocks have been conducted under different stress, temperature, and pH conditions so as to understand the evolution of permeability induced by these conditions. Throughout the experiments, the confining pressures and temperatures are well-controlled. Effluent concentrations are also measured for the ten elements of Si, Al, K, Fe, Ca, Na, Mg, Ti, S, and Cl that are included mainly in the targeted rocks. In the early stage of the experiments, the fracture permeability measured abruptly decreases with time, and subsequently reaches quasi-steady state within a relatively short period. In contrast, the permeability in the intact rocks monotonically increases with time. The permeability increase and decrease are attributed likely to the relative dominance of mineral dissolution in the pore spaces and to that of mineral dissolution/crushing at the propping asperities within the fracture and/or mineral precipitation onto the free surfaces, respectively. The evolving rates and magnitudes of the permeability are likely to be controlled by the stress exerted over the contacting asperities, temperatures, and pH of the permeant. Thus, this complicated behavior should be attributed to the coupled chemically- and mechanically-induced effects, which should be examined in more detail for longer period to contribute to the safe entombment of radioactive wastes. INTRODUCTIONUnderstanding of the flow and transport characteristics of porous/fractured rocks is required for the safe and long-term geological isolation of energy-related by-products (i.e., high level radioactive wastes and anthropogenic CO2). Notably, under relatively high temperature and stress conditions, mechanically- and chemically-mediated processes may alter the pore structures in rocks, resulting in an irreversible evolution of the flow and transport behavior. Augmentation in permeability may result from mechanical dilation due to shearing and mineral dissolution within the pore spaces, while reduction may result from reversible or irreversible mechanical compaction, mineral dissolution at the contacting areas, and clogging of pore spaces by precipitation of secondary minerals."

"Spiral concentrators are used to upgrade ore based on the density difference between their component minerals. This simple flowing film gravity separator is of interest for the processing of large amounts of material, as found in the iron ore industry. Addition of wash water at different points on the trough of the spiral affects the grade and recovery of the valuable concentrate by affecting the flow of particles within the thin slurry film. This paper shows how radiolabelled hematite (-355+300 µm) and quartz (–1,180+1,000 µm) tracers were used to determine the particles’ behaviour within the slurry film with and without the addition of wash water. The results presented provide a detailed particle flow pattern around a wash water addition point and its effect on the trajectory and velocity of the particles. This information is of interest in building knowledge about spiral wash water injection parameters such as injection location, direction, flow rate and nozzle orifice type (affecting jet shape and velocity).INTRODUCTIONSpiral concentrators are density based separation devices. They are extensively used in the upgrading of iron ore, fine coal and minerals sands (sources of ilmenite, rutile, zircon and monazite) (Wills & Finch, 2016). A spiral unit is composed of a channel of specific profile formed as a helix of 3 to 7 turns around a central structural post. The feed pulp is composed of 15 to 45% solids with particle size from 75 µm to 3000 µm (Wills & Finch, 2016). Throughput of a single spiraling trough can be up to 8 ton per hour and multiple trough unit (up to four trough) can process up to 30 ton per hour for a footprint of around 0.7 m2 (Palmers & Vadeikis, 2010). They are low cost concentrators considering manufacturing of their trough via polymer reverse molding. The energy intensity of a spiral plan is notably small considering the throughput and is mostly related to pulp pumping and final concentrate dewatering."

The problem of processing refractory (rebellious) gold ores is important for all the countries involved in recovering precious metals from ores. Technological aspects of processing precious metal ores are examined in two respects: enhancing gold recovery from double refractory ores; and using carbonaceous ores on a production scale. The dispersed carbonaceous matter (DCM) present in concentrates causes the adsorption of [Au(CN)2]- complex on their surface during cyanidation process. Depending on the degree of graphitization and the organic carbon content in DCM (including kerogens and bitumen), the technology used to recover precious metals varies considerably. The problem of processing refractory (rebellious) gold ores is important for all the countries involved in recovering precious metals from ores. Depending on the degree of graphitization and the organic carbon content in DCM (including kerogens and bitumen), the technology used to recover precious metals varies considerably. The possibility of rare metals recovery, including rhenium, from black-shale rocks, has been examined. Comparative assessment of analytical methods of rare metals detecting has been carried out. It has been proved that neutron activation analysis is a promising technique. It has been shown that colloid-salt fraction (nanofraction) with particle size less than 1000 nm makes up to 3 wt% of black shale samples and is extracted by water under special conditions. The use of water instead of chemically active reagents provides insolubility of the mineral matrix and fully reflects the colloid-salt element of the samples. To sum up, the justification of the choice of technology for processing of carbon-bearing ores is based on examining the type of carbonaceous matter and its adsorption behavior. When the content of carbon of high degree of metamorphism is considerable, it is possible to recover platinum group elements and rare elements from this type of ores. The obtained results predetermine the general guidelines for creating new methods and techniques of processing carbonaceous material for integral development of solid minerals in the mining and oilfield areas of Russia.

"ZINC-LEAD REPLACEMENT deposits straddle the steep-sided valley of Kicking Horse River at a point three miles east of Field, B.c., in Yoho National Park. The Monarch orebodies extend into Mt. Stephen on the south side of the valley, and outcrop at two points, 1,000 and 1,200 feet above the valley floor. The Kicking Horse deposits are in Mt. Field, on the north side of the valley, and they outcrop 200 feet lower.The East Monarch outcrop is said to have been discovered in 1884 during construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The larger West Monarch outcrop, 700 feet west of the original discovery, was not reached till 1917 because of its nearly inaccessible location on the cliff face.The Kicking Horse mine was staked in 1906. Little development was done for several decades, and mining was not commenced till 1935.At the East Monarch, mining was commenced soon after location, and several thousand tons of ore were shipped prior to 1912. At this time a gravity concentrator was installed. This was operated till 1924, and a total of 42,000 tons of ore were mined, including about 10,000 tons from the West Monarch. The period from 1928 to 1935 featured flotation milling and the mining of 265,000 tons of ore, mostly from the West Monarch orebody. Intensive exploratory development was carried out in both Monarch and Kicking Horse from 1935 to 1946. Production from both mines in this period totalled 380,000 tons. From 1947 to the time of closure in 1952, considerable new ore was found in both mines and 185,000 tons were milled. Immediate possibilities for finding ore in the Monarch were considered exhausted. Kicking Horse orebodies are known to persist with a low grade of zinc. Total production from the two mines amounts to 842,500 tons grading approximately 7 per cent lead, 10 per cent zinc, and 1.2 ounces per ton silver."

Syncrude Canada Ltd. has recently completed construction of its ambitious tar-sand mining and processing facilities at Mildred Lake, Alberta. The Syncrude site is approximately 48 km (30 miles) north of Fort McMurray near the west shore of the Athabasca River. The Syncrude operation involves the open-pit mining of approximately 270,000 tonnes (300,000 tons) of tar sand daily using draglines and a conveyor system. Bitumen is extracted from the tar sand, upgraded to oil-gas and transported to refineries in Edmonton and other locations for final processing . The Beaver Creek Dam forms part of the mining facilities for the Syncrude tar-sand mining operation. Water from Beaver Creek is diverted from the open-pit mine site south to the Athabasca River via Ruth Lake and the Poplar Creek Dam. General site layout is shown on Figure I . Design of the dam was completed by R. M. Hardy and Associates Ltd. of Edmonton, Alberta (now Hardy Associates (1978) Ltd) . Construction was undertaken during the summers of 1974 and 1975 under the direction of Canadian Bechtel Limited, managing contractors for Syncrude Canada Ltd. Total length of the dam is approximately 2.8 km (1.7 miles), with a maximum height in the order of 16 m (50 ft) The Beaver Creek Dam is located in a broad, flat, poorly drained valley. About 50 per cent of the site is covered with treeless peat deposits, which ranged in thickness from in excess of 5 m (15 ft) at the east end of the dam to less than 1 m (3 ft) at the central portion. The peat deposits overlie Pleistocene meltwater sediments on top of clay/clay shales of the Clearwater Formation and the tar sands of the McMurray Formation. The peat deposits and high groundwater levels at the site combine to make the excavation and construction of a conventional rolled clay cutoff impractical. For these reasons, the slurry cutoff trench technique was utilized to produce an efficient and effective seepage cutoff under various sections of the Beaver Creek Dam .

The practice of stripping copper starter sheets from titanium blanks to be used in a conventional electrolytic tankhouse has been around since the advent of Electrometallurgy. Historically it has been done manually, utilizing many people to produce in some cases thousands of starter sheets per day. Some other conventional tankhouses have successfully converted to using mechanical means to strip starter sheets or have made the switch to permanent cathodes and although robotics have been around for quite some time they have not been used to strip starter sheets until recently. The Amarillo Copper Refinery began using robotics to strip several years ago and the details to how this came about and how the robots work will be described. INTRODUCTION ASARCO LLC (Asarco) was organized in 1899 as the American Smelting and Refining Company. Originally a consolidation of several lead-silver smelting companies, it evolved over the years into an integrated producer of primary non-ferrous metals, including copper, lead and zinc and associated co- products (Marcosson, 1949). Grupo México, S.A.B. de C.V acquired Asarco in 1999. Today, Asarco is a vertically integrated producer of primary refined copper and associated co-products such as gold, silver, molybdenum, selenium and tellurium. Asarco operates three open-pit mines and mills and two solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) plants all in Arizona plus a copper smelter in Arizona and a copper refinery in Texas. Figure 1 illustrates how the copper metal comes out of the ground at the mine and ends up as a refined product at the refinery The copper refinery in Texas is known as the Amarillo Copper Refinery (ACR) and is located in Amarillo, Texas. It was built in 1975 to replace 3 other aging refineries and was designed to produce 550,000 tons (500,000 MT) of refined copper per year using conventional starter sheet technology. At the time it was commissioned it was the largest tankhouse in the world at just under 1/2 miles long under one roof.

"This paper describes the automation of Kiena's grinding circuit which comprises an open SAG mill circuit and a closed ball mill circuit with two stages of hydrocyclones. The circuit has been instrumented according to a two level control strategy.The regulatory control strategy is implemented in an industrial controller. This controller does data filtering and calculation (flowrate and solid content) and regulates the pump box levels (2), the water additions: or the pulp percent solids (4) and the fresh ore feed rate.The supervisory control calculates for the industrial controller, the fresh ore feed rate setpoint and the pulp percent solids setpoints in order to optimize the grinding circuit operation. It is made of two modules, one for data filtering and one for control optimization. The filtering program uses modern tools to adjust the measured value and estimate missing data (dynamic material balance, on line estimation of model parameter, etc.). The control program acts as an expert system which combines the benefits of model-based control and rule-based control. A multivariable predictive controller (DMC) is used to maintain the circulating load and the hydrocyclones feed percent solids (which is correlated to particle size) while the rule-based control validates the previous output, detects and avoids the SAG overloads and sump pumps overflows.The system has been operating since MAY 1992 and the benefits obtained are discussed.INTRODUCTIONIn 1990, Les Mines d'Or Kiena decided to go ahead with a project for automating its grinding circuit as proposed by the Centre de recherché minerals (CRM). Its objectives in doing so were to marginally increase production capacity (1 % ) and to create a new challenge for plant staff. The main stages of the project, which involved CRM, Kiena Mines and a consultant, are shown in Table 1. The project was completed in May 1992 with the implementation of a supervisory control system. This text describes the main features of the system with a special focus on its most innovative aspects."

"An antimony-bearing gold ore was studied in a cyanide slurry containing 7 -20 ppm dissolved oxygen. 1 g/L NaCN at pH 9.5 and 48 hours retention time is required to extract 94 % of the gold from the 90 % minus 200 mesh ore by conventional cyanidation at a 7 ppm O2. As oxygen concentration was increased to 20 ppm, the conditions required to extract the same amount of gold were: 0.25 g/L NaCN, 16 hours retention time and 80% minus 200 mesh. Compared to conventional cyanidation, oxygen-enriched leaching was shown to reduce retention time by three times and cyanide consumption by four times. The kinetics of gold dissolution related to the dissolved oxygen concentration in slurry was expressed by following equation:XAu = 100 * (Kt + I0) / (1 + Kt + I0)where XAu is the percentage gold extraction; t is the retention time; K and Io are the slope and the intercept of the plot of XAu I (100 -XAu) vs. t respectively. The values of Kand Io depend upon the concentrations of cyanide and oxygen, the fineness of grind and the origin of ore sample etc.. Abstract Canada has opened up a geological province in ?Western Canada which offers a new .stimulus to oil exploration geophysics. The problems of instrumental technique, interpretation, and logistics involved in the exploration of this new territory are presented in this paper and some of the efforts being undertaken to overcome them are discussed. The scope of this programme, its possible trend and extent, especially when viewed .against the background of the exploration effort in the United States, is touched upon. Introduction The science of earth physics was first applied to the search for oil on this continent some twenty-five years ago when torsion balance and refraction seismic methods were initiated in the Gulf Coast area of the United States. Since that time advances in the various branches of the science have been sporadic as new fields for their use opened up in the search for deep salt domes as well as less well-defined geological structures; in the application to well logging as part of the exploitation of petroleum; and in underwater surveys, aerial surveys, etc. In the present paper, attention has been concentrated only on the Western Canada plains area because of the recent remarkable growth of geophysics as an oil finding technique in this region. The other prospective oil areas of the West Coast and the Eastern Provinces of Canada are at present of minor importance, although they will undoubtedly receive increasing consideration in the future as accessibility to markets becomes a major factor and more improved geophysical and geological techniques are developed. A vast province in Canada, covering some 655,000 square miles of prospective oil territory (approximately one-half of the prospective oil area in the United States), has provided the new sphere of activity for geophysics (see Figures 1 and 2). Included in this area are immense inaccessible, uninhabited frozen regions which pose a new problem in logistics and operational techniques.

Ever-growing global needs for critical metals, such as rare earth elements (REE), and base metals, such as copper and nickel, and their environmental impact motivated the pursuit of sustainable flowsheets. Regeneration of hydrochloric acid in chloride-based leaching flowsheets as a critical unit operation is an example of such endeavours. This study presents an efficient hydrochloric acid regeneration method from a magnesium chloride solution waste by addition of sulphuric acid in relatively low temperatures. The effects of temperature, initial magnesium chloride concentration, amount of sulphuric acid added, and airflow are examined. Experimental work are focused on temperatures between 80 and 95°C, initial magnesium chloride concentrations of 2 to 5 M, 100% to 220% stoichiometric sulphuric acid additions, and airflows between 200 to 600 mL/min. The developed technology recovers hydrochloric acid at a high rate and concentration with a relatively small environmental footprint. INTRODUCTION The mining and metals sector is under increasing environmental and economic pressure to make more efficient use of chemical reagents and energy in the production process. This affects several areas of process and flowsheet design such as the selection of the most appropriate unit operations and the overall design of the process steps paying heed to sustainability. Owing to the inherent inefficiencies of physical and chemical processes used in the mining industry, there will be materials and streams generated that are not a desirable part of the envisaged flowsheet. Thus, methods are implemented to recover and recycle such effluents. If the recovery and recycling are not economical, then procedures are followed to neutralize and dispose these effluents. In many cases, these effluents are potential contaminants or hazardous materials, and their disposal should be looked at in a much larger context. The safe management of the contaminants and hazardous effluents is a daunting problem in the mining industry and is fraught with technological, economic, social, and political challenges.

"This paper presents the results of structural analyses and full-scale destructive tests conducted on liner plate culverts. The purpose of this work was to establish a design method and evaluate the suitability of using these structures in potential roof-fall areas for a rehabilitation application in lower stress and relaxed mining environments. Field evaluation of the design is currently in progress.Theoretical ultimate resistance functions were established for two different culvert shapes and were found to be representative of their experimental behaviour. The ultimate resistance function was used to determine their plastic behaviour to a rapidly increasing deflection condition, to determine the energy absorption capacity of these structures, and to predict their response to impact loading.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek mine of Falconbridge Limited is located justnorth of Timmins, Ontario. The area under rehabilitation for which this program was developed is the 2600 level of the No. I mine. The problem of effectively securing selected drifts at the 2600 level in NO.1 mine, for access to a high-grade ore block, is key to the economics of the operation. Diamond drill test holes had indicated a loosened rock mass above the 2600 level of about 7.5 m thick in response to the extensive mining operation below this level. This level forms the arbitrary boundary between the No. I and No. 2 mines, and has extensive volumes of cemented rock fill below it and largely untouched ore above it to the 2000 level in the North orebody. The walls at that level were showing relaxed ground conditions typical of de-stress: sub-horizontal joints opening up, and peeling.Due to the ground conditions, the consequent safety risks, the high grade of the ore, the potential production delays, and the likelihood of several phases of rehabilitation, regularly used drift rehabilitation employing rock bolts, cable bolting, or shotcrete was not practical. Two options were deemed possible alternatives to suit these conditions, steel sets with blocking and lagging, and liner plate culverts with backfill. Culverts were chosen."

"The mining industry is taking advantage of the increased performance resulting from the use of variable speed A C drives for large motors. This technology provides increased efficiency under the variable speed and torque requirements of such drives as mine hoists, conveyors, and air moving equipment. The technology does introduce voltage spikes on the voltage wave form that stress the insulation system to a greater degree than would occur with a constant voltage source. These voltage spikes must be considered in the design of the insulation system used for these motors.BackgroundHistorically the insulation systems for large AC motors were designed to withstand with reasonable life the voltage stresses of a 60 Hz constant sinusoidal voltage. One of the design tests is a voltage endurance test that requires the application of a 60 Hz voltage from conductor to ground equal to four to five times normal and establishing a time to failure. These higher than normal voltages accelerate the normal aging process by causing extensive partial discharge activity (corona) within the insulation system and the time to failure is a relative indication of insulation life.In addition to the voltage endurance test at 60 Hz, the individual coils are subjected to a surge voltage test to establish the withstand capability of the turn to turn insulation under switching surge conditions. The surge voltage is a fast rise time, 0.2 microsecond to crest value, voltage spike that can be caused by a circuit breaker or contactor closing operation. These voltage spikes can have a crest value of greater than 3.5 times the normal line to ground crest voltage of the normal 60 Hz power supply. The standard withstand test value is thus 3.5 times normal line to ground voltage. Because the voltage surges or spikes occur mainly during start and stop switching conditions, voltage endurance under these conditions has not been a major factor in insulation system design."
