This paper describes the methods used for the ventilation of raises, sublevels and drawholes at Cominco's Sullivan mine. The problems involved in ventilation during blasting, drilling and scraping operations are first re-viewed, and then the air mover, a piece of equipment developed at the Sullivan mine, is described. The design of this device is discussed, along with the operating procedures used. Some figures are given to show the effectiveness of the method. THE Sullivan mine, located at Kimberley in the southeast corner of British Columbia, is owned and operated by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited. Current daily production is approximately 10,000 tons. The mine is developed by sixteen levels over a vertical range of 2,000 feet. The total ventilation requirements, which amount to approximately 1,000,000 cubic feet per minute, are handled through a network of fresh air intake and foul air exhaust circuits. In addition to the many development and production headings, there are three crushing chambers and an extensive conveyor system which must be ventilated.

This paper describes a platform for autonomous operations in open pit mining environments. A typical operation consists of: (1) Initial locomotion toward a remote worksite; (2) Pattern navigation within the worksite; (3) Worksite manipulations and (4) Return locomotion to the start location. The platform includes precise localization module based upon the fusion of odometry, inertial and GPS measurements. The guidance module starts from a set of way points specified on a GPSreferenced map and plans and executes the mission. A typical mission includes specified manipulative tasks along the navigation path. During motion execution the on-board system continuously verifies that the path is free of obstacles and that the hardware is not overloaded. Momentary losses of external positioning measurements does not adversely affect the performance, owing to the redundancy in position and heading estimation. A rehearsal phase follows planning and allows the supervisor to examine the kinematic behavior of the platform during motion, thus reducing the need for continuous monitoring during execution and providing protection against potential losses of communication.

In the townships of Genoa and Marion, Subdury Mining Division, Ontario, there is a group of twenty-three mining claims known as the Jefferson claims. They are controlled by the Jefferson Mining Corporation and they were staked in 1908 by W. E. Smith, formerly of Sudbury, Ontario, and now of Smith & Reitz, a law firm of Minneapolis, Minnesota. These claims were staked for iron ore and in 1910 about 4000 feet of diamond-drilling was done on them. During the drilling operations galena and sphalerite ~were found in the iron formation in cores from holes, Nos. 2 and 3, claim W. D. 717, Genoa township. This discovery lead to a search for galena and sphalerite in the vicinity and a streak of rock containing these minerals was found in the iron formation a short distance to the east of. the drill holes. A shaft was sunk on this outcrop in 1912 to a depth of 8 feet and bottomed in an attractive lens of galena. Stripping revealed other small exposures of galena and sphalerite in the iron formation.

"Applying DEM to prediction of tumbling mill performance is challenging because several different modes of breakage are active in the process. As our knowledge of breakage and computational capacity improve, it is worth revisiting previous simulation tasks which did not produce a satisfactorily realistic description of a measured process. At SAG 2006, we reported the simulated and measured outcomes of treating a well characterised ore in a 1.2 m diameter mill. This well instrumented, pilot scale mill at the University of KwaZulu-Natal has been combined with some new approaches to ore testing to allow different modes of breakage to be tested. The mill design allows the rate of generation of fine material to be measured in close to real time for autogenous and SAG mill charges. The updated simulation model estimates mass loss with particle evolution and embeds the cumulative damage and breakage.The simulated results are compared with the measured results. Issues such as relating modelling inputs to particle breakage characterisation data and the accuracy of the predictions of the models are discussed."

"The first tentative test made to try rubber lining in grinding mills was made in the early twenties. However, because of poor rubber compounds and design the results did not prove to be promising.In the early sixties successful trials of rubber linings were carried out as a result of a cooperation between boliden AB and Skega AB.One of the reasons rubber was not used earlier for linings was the difference in wear characteristics between rubber and steel. The ability to successfully develop rubber mill liners depends on three factors:l. Design2. Material (rubber compounding)3. Experience (knowledge)DESIGNThe main difference between steel and rubber, in material aspect, is the elasticity and the low tensile and shearing strength of rubber. It is necessary to take maximum advantage of the elasticity and to reduce tensile and shearing forces by minimizing the sliding of the mill charge. This is accomplished by using the Lorrain type of liners, i.e., lifter bars and plates. It is, however, necessary to keep a certain balance between lifter bars to optimize liner life and grinding performance."

Highland Valley Copper is a conventional truck-shovel mining and flotation concentrator operation located some 75 kilometres southwest of Kamloops, B.C. (Figure 1). The ore is located within a porphyry copper deposit and is mined at a rate of 135,000 metric tonnes per day from two separate open pits. The nearby mill produces concentrates containing 375 million pounds of copper and 5 million pounds of molybdenum metal yearly. In the Valley pit, head grades are roughly 0.40% Cu at a 0.23% Cu equivalent cut-off. The Valley pit strip ratio currently sits at 0.55:1 with waste quantities made up of separate rock and unconsolidated overburden units. From the mill, concentrates are trucked to nearby Ashcroft and then hauled by rail to ocean port facilities in Vancouver. The mine employs 950 persons and is planned to operate until 2009. The operation is a partnership between TeckCominco with a 63.9% interest, BHP Billiton holding 33.6%, and others 2.5%. Management is shared by the two principal owners and directed by a management committee.

The Sulphide-Preview Lakes area is located 45 km northeast of La Ronge in northern Saskatchewan. It lies within the southern portion of the Proterozoic La Ronge Volcanic-Sedimentary Belt. Two styles of gold mineralization are present in the Sulphide Lake area , stratabound gold mineralization is intimately associated with a pyrite-pyrrhotite-arsenopyrite-bearing graphitic argillite unit within a sequence of intermediate to felsic volcaniclastics. Past operators established three mineralized zones along this horizon with combined reserves for two of the zones, of about 175,000 tons at 0.22 oz/ton Au. In the Preview Lake area , gold mineralization occurs in variably sheared gabbro/quartz diorite sills within a mixed sedimentary-felsic volcaniclastic sequence. Gold occurs with arsenopyrite, pyrite and minor chalcopyrite associated with quartz veins and stringers. A sulphidebearing graphitic argillite unit occurs in close proximity to the mineralized shears. Past operators delineated seven mineralized shear zones, two of which were drilltested. Average gold grades reported are in the 0.1 to 0.2 oz/ton range with erratic values up to 5.0 oz/ton.

Subsequent to a campaign of pilot-kiln trials of firing bio-oil and natural gas, scale-up to commercial lime kilns was made using an in-house mathematical kiln model. Both dry limestone and lime mud kilns of 3.5 m OD. by 100 m length were used for bio¬oil firing simulations. Comparisons were made against natural gas firing on the basis of specific firing rate, off-gas volume, energy consumption and overall lime quality. Model simulation results indicate that conversion from natural gas to bio-oil with no productivity loss will increase energy comsumption by about 7.5% and total off-gas volume by about 8%. Alternatively, a 6% decrease in productivity would be expected if off-gas volume is maintained constant. The calculations are sensitive to deviations in the lower heating value (LHV) used in the simulations. A 5% increase in the LHV of the bio-oil, which could result from a 3% decrease in the moisture content, reduces the energy penalty to 2% coupled with a slight reduction in off-gas volume.

In order to use ZnO laden dust as a possible desulphurization reagent, it is important to evaluate thermodynamics of the Zn-O-S system. At temperatures greater than 1450 K, there is an uncertainty in the thermodynamic data for the reaction of zinc with sulfur to form Zinc sulfide. In this work, the standard free energy has been determined using an electrochemical cell: Pt, Mo, MoO2/YSZ/ZnO, ZnS, S02, Pt., between 1198 and 1602 K. AG° varies from -145,880 to -88,100 J (± 2500) , with a phase change to ZnS (g) by sublimation occurring between 1450 and 1460 K. This is supported by thermogravimetric analysis which shows about 80% weight loss in ZnS from 1273 to 1473 K. Feasibility reactions were also performed and confirmed that ZnS (g) is formed when ZnO reacts with FeS (1473 to 1653 K) or with Fe-Csat-S(1473-1673 K). There is therefore potential for the utilization of ZnO laden waste as an additional or alternative reagent for desulfurisation.

Availability of the elements originating from steelmaking slag for various marine phytoplankters including purely cultured strains and natural populations was tested in land and shipboard laboratories. The results obtained demonstrate that, although their solubility was not uniform among different slags, dissolved iron, silicate and phosphate from the slag stimulate phytoplankton growth. No negative effect of the slag addition on their growth was observed at lower dose, e.g. less than 200 mg/l. Since most coastal waters are the hypernitrogenous environment due to anthropogenic load of ammonium, the slag can be an ideal source of silicate and phosphate, which restore the hyper-nitrogenous condition into truly eutrophic condition with balanced Redfield ratio. In so-called HNLC (high-nitrate low-chlorophyll) oceanic areas such as the Southern Ocean and the subarctic North Pacific, where iron is almost only limiting factor of the phytoplankton growth, the slag could also be a source of iron and enhance CO2 fixation by phytoplankton photosynthesis. That makes the extent of our responsibilities clear but does not give us a check list to keep an eye on as we do our job from day to day.What are our responsibilities? I suggest they are the following:1. Developing and maintaining efficient operating and maintenance crews.2. Milling the required tonnage.3. Recovering the economical maximum amount of gold.4. Keeping costs at the economical minimum.5. Seeing that the figures are reasonably accurate for tonnages, assays, production, losses, and costs.6. Preventing accidents.7. Preventing fires.8. Maintaining the equipment and building and keeping them clean and tidy.9. Enforcing company rules and regulations."

"Gravity profiles were established over five known Middle Silurian pinnacle reef s in Lambton County, southwestern Ontario. The profiles were approximately 3 km long, with stations every 60 m. Four fairly recent technological developments were used which now make the gravity method relatively efficient and inexpensive compared to the techniques available two decades ago. These are: (1) a La Coste-Romberg model G gravimeter to measure the gravitational attraction with a sensitivity of 0.01 mgal; (2) a Sokkisha model B-2 semiautomatic engineers level to measure the station elevations with an accuracy of 0.5 cm; (3) a Huntec FS-3 hammer reflection seismograph to determine the overburden thickness to an accuracy of ± 7%; and (4) a modern microcomputer to process the data sets and mathematically filter the gravity values. Thus, two men can measure and analyze approximately 1 km of profile per day and obtain the residual gravity profile to an accuracy of ± 0. 05 mgal. Positive gravity anomalies of 0.17 to 0.72 mgal were observed along all five profiles that approximately delineate the dimensions of the known pinnacle reefs, which have an average height of 120 m, diameter of 1500 m and depth to top of 575 m. The relative ease of the gravity survey method makes it a cost-effective technique for hydrocarbon exploration in southwestern Ontario. IntroductionPinnacle reefs are important sources of oil and gas. Although the pinnacle reefs in southwestern Ontario are small, they may contain commercial pools of oil and gas because of their proximity to refineries. They are also useful for subsurface storage of gas to meet the winter surge in gas demand.At present, geophysical exploration for new pinnacle reefs is done primarily by relatively expensive seismic methods, which are also limited in southwestern Ontario by prohibitions on blasting. Gravity methods of exploration were attempted more than two decades ago in this region. (Pohly, 1954); however, the level of technology at that time made the method marginal in sensitivity and quite expensive. Several subsequent developments- gravimeters with greater sensitivity and operating ease, ""self-levelling"" levels for elevation control, hammer seismic reflection units for determining overburden thickness and portable microcomputers for efficient data analysis-have significantly improved the precision and cost effectiveness of the gravity method. Five known pinnacle reefs were selected in Lambton County, southwestern Ontario (Fig. 1), to test the effectiveness of integrating these developments to locate and define additional reefs. Isolated reefs were chosen to avoid the problem of the gravity effect s of one reef interfering with those of a neighbouring reef. The development of pyrometallurgical technologies has been focused on new smelting reactors, but the proposal for new converting reactors has been substantially lower. Up to today about 80% of copper matte is treated by the traditional P-S converters which have the weakness of pollutant fugitive emissions. Therefore, the continuously converting processes for treating molten matte have been studied and developed. In July 2017 the "oxygen-rich side blowing smelting + multi-lances top converting & fire refining" continuous copper treating process was commissioned. This process was designed by ENFI and YanTai GuoRun Copper Smelter. In this process, oxygen rich side blow technology is adopted for smelting, which is a new type of side blowing smelting furnace to produce high-grade copper matte. The converting adopts the horizontal multi-lances top-blowing continuously converting process, which eliminates the transportation of molten melt and the SO2 fugitive emission. The intermediate products of this process, copper matte and blister copper is fed into the furnaces respectively through launders. This new process is more advanced, more reliable and more environmentally friendly. Until now, this process in the GuoRun copper smelter is operating smoothly. An increasing number of projects which use this process are under design and construction in China. INTRODUCTION At present, there are many advanced smelting technologies for copper concentrate, such as oxygen bottom blowing smelting, flash smelting, top lance smelting (including ISA and Ausmelt furnaces smelting), side blowing smelting, Mitsubishi smelting, etc. At the same time, there are many copper matte converting technologies such as oxygen bottom blowing continuous converting, flash converting, Ausmelt top lance converting, horizontal multi-lances top blowing converting, Mitsubishi converting, P-S converter converting, etc. The final blister copper fire refining technology mostly adopts rotary anode furnace. Therefore, in the process of processing and extracting the copper from concentrate to produce anodes, there are dozens of technology combinations. Among them, the non-continuous converting technologies for molten or cold matte are often adopted in the converting process. The traditional P-S converting technology had been utilized for over one hundred years, with a mature, reliable and simple operation, also has advantages in the secondary scrap smelting of a wide range of quality. However, due to its batch operation, frequent roll in and out, poor sealing, considerable air infiltration, needs for ladles for molten phases transportation and other characteristics, the technology has a serious pollution problem due to fugitive SO2. At the same time, in the cold matte converting technology, the molten matte needs to be cooled and then processed. The sensible heat of the molten matte cannot be recovered, and the preparation process is needed in the process. Therefore, both energy consumption and investment are relatively higher.

"In the present work, we developed a Smart Process Control Toolkit (SProC) as a single simulation environment for the modelling of materials microstructure and its interaction with the local microchemistry during manufacturing of semi-finished products. This toolkit supports the data communication between sub-sequent processing steps such as casting, homogenization, pre-heating to deformation, etc. The thermo-kinetical simulation software MatCalc of MatCalc Engineering© GmbH was used for modelling of precipitation kinetics, such as formation of primary and secondary phases and their evolution. An import/export functionality of the precipitation distribution after each processing step was implemented to follow the parameter history. For the evolution of the local microstructure, a Mean Dislocation Density based Model (MD2M) was used. This model consists of two parts: (1) Flow Stress Model for calculation of the total strength during the deformation and (2) Static Recrystallization Model for account of the recrystallization and grain growth after the deformation. Validation was done by a comparison of experimental and simulated hot compression tests of a conventional AA2024 alloy.INTRODUCTION Optimization of a semi-finished products quality, elimination of typical production issues and cost savings are of a great demand for supply industries. However, it is currently not feasible to investigate the whole manufacturing process in detail at an industrial level. Concerning the processing parameters, one must understand the correlation mechanisms between macroscopic properties and microscopic material behavior. Numerical simulations, which could reproduce the real processing conditions on the one hand, and employ a physically based modelling on the other, are thus attracting a lot of attention and their power is no longer under the question. It is well known that e.g. the total strength of the material depends directly on distribution of precipitation particles and mean grain size. In order to follow their evolution during the manufacturing process beginning from casting to the final semi-finished product, and thus be able to control the process, one should use the techniques which would at the same time reproduce experimental processing conditions of real size objects (e.g. sheet, extrusions, etc.) and account for the evolution of a local microstructure and its interaction with the microchemistry. A commonly used approach is to implement a model which would describe the evolution of microstructure based on a dislocation density approach into a user defined material subroutine of some finite element solver. There is, however, also an influence of the manufacturing process by e.g. the evolution of a local microchemistry (formation, transformation and dissolution of the precipitation particles) on the microstructure and thus the macroscopic material behavior. Thus, a method is needed to follow the variable history through the simulation of the whole production chain."

Electrorefining of low-grade copper alloys containing various amounts of nickel, lead, antimony, bismuth, arsenic, selenium, silver, and gold in sulfamic acid media was demonstrated. The copper concentration of the alloys used as an anode was 70–90 wt%. The electrolyte contained 100 g L-1 of free sulfamic acid and 40 g L-1 of cupric ion. Galvanostatic electrolysis was conducted at 200–300 A m-2 in the electrolyte using a low-grade copper alloy anode and a stainless steel cathode at 25C. The terminal voltage was approximately 0.8 V at the start of the electrolysis, although it increased periodically to approximately 2.0 V and then shortly returned to its initial value. Nickel, lead, and arsenic from the anode dissolved in the electrolyte and were removed. Antimony, bismuth, selenium, and silver were removed as solids. Consequently, a dense copper cathode was obtained, and the concentration of copper was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometry to be 99.82–99.99 wt%. INTRODUCTION Electrorefining of copper is conventionally carried out in a sulfuric acid electrolyte using crude copper assaying at 99.5 wt% Cu as the anode (Biswas & Davenport, 1994). Elements more noble than copper do not react anodically, and consequently, they are distributed in anode slimes. Elements less noble than copper dissolve from the anode. Nickel and arsenic are stabilized as aqueous species. Lead, antimony, and bismuth react with water, sulfuric acid, or arsenic acid to form barely soluble compounds; thus, they are distributed in anode slimes. An emerging issue in the electrolytic refining of copper is an increase of impurities in crude copper used as the anode (Moats et al., 2013). This is due to an increase in the content of impurities in copper concentrates as well as an increase in the types of secondary copper feedstocks (e.g., E-Scraps, automotive shredder residues, and smelting residues) treated in the copper pyrometallurgical process. An extreme case is a copper smelter that does not use copper concentrates as feedstocks. In such a process, copper-bearing feedstocks are smelted in a top submerged lance furnace to prepare low-grade copper alloys assaying at 80– 90 wt% Cu (Sekimoto et al., 2013). Such low-grade copper is not acceptable as an anode in the conventional copper electrolytic refining process because it is easily passivated during electrolysis. Consequently, electrolytic copper is produced by leaching the atomized low-grade copper in a sulfuric acid solution with oxygen, followed by electrowinning. However, electrowinning should be avoided whenever possible because the electrical energy consumed in electrowinning is 5–10 times higher than that consumed in electrorefining. "The furnace is the heart of smelting operations, and therefore the performance, reliability, and campaign life of the furnace are critical considerations. Furnace refractory is exposed to high temperatures and other harsh operating conditions causing brick erosion, crushing, and cracking, typically limiting the furnace campaign life and requiring costly furnace shut-downs for refractory re-lining. Despite extensive study, the in-service thermal / mechanical stresses in these complex refractory systems are not generally well understood. Hatch has developed a thermal-mechanical finite element analysis (FEA) based furnace refractory modeling approach that allows for the quantification of refractory movements, load distribution, and thermal / mechanical stresses.Due to the complexity of the refractory system, a range of models are used to identify and assess damage mechanisms and design improvements, including: 2D models, to capture expansion and movement of individual bricks, changes to load paths, and thermal stresses; and 3D models, to include the effect of differential expansion between bricks in each course, and assess overall load distributions. The 2D and 3D analyses include the effect of nonlinear temperature-dependent properties, thermal expansion, movement of individual bricks with frictional contacts (i.e., gaps can open, bricks can slide), and brick tensile or compressive failure. Both as-built and damaged conditions can be investigated (e.g., after bath zone brick erosion), for circular and rectangular furnaces. 3D models also include papering and brick joint & interface action.Analyses using these models have shown the importance of thermal stresses, papering, and geometry / arrangement of individual bricks. Results have been used to identify and assess damage mechanisms, showing good alignment with furnace autopsy observations. By using this FEA-based approach to quantify the refractory design, the risk of damage can be significantly reduced, low-cost design changes can be identified, and the furnace campaign life can be extended.INTRODUCTIONThe furnace is the heart of smelting operations and therefore the performance, reliability, and campaign life of the furnace are critical to the success of the smelting operation. Furnaces are inherently exposed to high temperatures, often in excess of 1600°C (Holappa, 2004), and furnace operating power has progressively increased over time (Voermann, Gerritsen, Candy, Stober, & Matyas, 2004). The refractory system must withstand high temperature, high heat flux, and other harsh operating conditions. These conditions are particularly significant for the furnace hearth, and can lead to damage including brick erosion due to molten material flows, crushing due to thermal expansion loads, and cracking due to severe thermal gradients within the bricks. Refractory damage typically limits the furnace campaign life, requiring costly furnace shut-downs for refractory re-lining (repair or replacement). In some cases the refractory may lose integrity causing damage to nearby equipment and harm to personnel."

Abstract -A thin layer of stratiform Ni-Zn-PGE sulfide mineralization of sedimentary-diagenetic origin was deposited during the Middle to Upper Devonian in the euxinic "Nick basin". The mineralized unit (2:3 cm thick), which seems to have been developed over the entire sedimentary basin of >80 km2, consists of pyrite, vaesite (NiSi), and sphalerite. The average grade of the mineralization is about 5.3% Ni, 0.73% Zn, ?770 ppb (PGE+Au), and up to 61 ppm Re. Anomalous Se, As, Mo, P, Ba and U are present. A minimum of 0.90 x 106 tonnes of Ni were deposited in the basin (based on a bed thickness of 3 cm) during the Devonian. The unique metal association, extensive lateral distribution, persistent metal grade, mineralogical makeup, and stratigraphic control demonstrate that this is a new deposit type and a new geological environment for Ni and PGE +Au. The sulfide layer occurs at the base of a Phosphatic Chert Member which is underlain by a distinctive marker unit consisting of concretionary limestone structures. The limestone spheroids may represent a vent-specific carbonate facies developed adjacent to faults that emanated nutrient­ rich hydrothermal discharges just prior to the main mineralizing event. The suite of elements associated with the Nick mineralization suggests that the ore-forming metals were originally bound to organic matter derived from decaying marine organisms. Discharge of hot brines bearing organic­ matter-bound metals took place along numerous conduits within basin faults that are now manifest as bitumen veins. Our syndiagenetic model proposes that these fluids were discharged laterally from the conduits into the unconsolidated bottom sediment (ooze). The introduction of this metalliferous fluid, rich in organic matter, stimulated biological activity and bacterial reduction of its contained S04 to sulfide. Hot, dense, laterally migrating hydrothermal fluid precipitated thin sulfide-rich 1arninae within bottom sediment. Published thermodynamic studies suggest that the diagnostic vaesite­ pyrite assemblage crystallized at approximately 138°C. The ?34:S values range from -14.7 o/oo to-10.0 o/oo and are up to 34 o/00 lighter than locally surrounding sulfides and age-equivalent mineralized strata elsewhere in the Selwyn Basin. The ?13:C values of calcite in the footwall of the mineralized unit ( -12 o/00 to -6 o/00) are isotopically much lighter than regional values. The lighter isotopic character is attributed to the hydrothermal discharge of fluids enriched in organic compounds. Although geochemical profiles of the lower Earn Group sediments that host the Nick mineralization reveal that these black shales are not distinctive, the unusual Ni, Zn, PGE, U, Ba, and P elemental associations and their anomalous concentrations in stream sediments can be used to explore for this deposit type.

On line monitoring and diagnosis systems of process operating performance are becoming an important part of industrial programs, leading to improve process operation and therefore product quality over time. In processes, such as the contact section of a sulphuric acid plant, a large number of input variables, highly correlated, are presented. These characteristics usually pose more difficulties in modelling the process for monitoring and diagnosis purposes. Multivariate statistical projection methods, such as Main Component Analysis, have been proposed to effectively deal with these situations. The application of these ideas to a section of a 2350 MTD sulphuric acid plant, located at the Caletones Smelter, including dry tower, gas blowers, catalytic reactor and S03 absorber processes, is discussed here. A PCA model with eight main components is used for monitoring and diagnosis of more than seventy operating variables. Hottelling's T2 and Q residuals test were used for detecting measurement problems in relevant variables, and for identifying which set of variables were responsible for driving the process outside its normal operating region. Furthermore, considerable information for the correction of the tested operating problems was given by the use of these techniques.

"Kidd Creek Mines places approximately 10 000 tonnes of consolidated rockfill on a daily basis. Consolidated rockfill is comprised of sized aggregate mixed with different ratio and amounts of binders. Consolidated rockfill, with closely controlled specification, is employed for subsequent pillar recovery and improved passive active/ ground support. With the same amount of cementing agents consolidated rockfill mass yields a higher, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, cohesion, and angle of friction compared to a typical cemented hydraulic fill mass.The consolidated rockfill at Kidd Creek Mines is designed to sustain not only the gravitational loading of the overlaying fill material, but also to some extent the dynamic loading applied during blasting of the adjacent stopes and/or pillars.The quality control of materials used in Kidd Creek's rockfill system could be effected in three stages of handling: (1) at the surface backfill plant; (2) during transportation; and (3) placement of the fill.The emphasis in this paper is placed on individual stope backfill design and quality control measures at Kidd Creek Mines to place fill in large-scale open stopes which eventually could be exposed on all four walls during pillar recoveries."

The determination of surface tensions and contact angles of coal particles is of great interest for coal beneficiation processes such as froth flotation and oil agglomeration and for the inclusion of coal particles into oil droplets as a means of enriching the fuel. Methods for contact-angle measurements on small irregularly shaped solid particles have not been available in the past. Therefore, we recently developed a novel technique to determine contact angles and surf ace tensions of coal particles. Two types of bituminous and one type of subbituminous coal particles have been tested. The technique used is called the freezing-front technique and it considers the behaviour of the test particles (in the range of 20-250 pm) at the solidification front of carefully selected, well-defined solidifying melts (matrix materials) such as thymol, biphenyl, naphthalene, salol and 2-phenyl phenol.The results show that the technique works well, providing quantitative and detailed information on the wettability of coal particles. The sensitivity of the method is so high that a difference in contact angle of approximately 4 degrees between the smaller and the larger particles is clearly registered.
