This paper focusses on technological developments which occurred in the village of Deloro, Ontario between 1868 and 1919. These developments illustrate the manner in which improved metallurgical processes linked Ontario mineral resources to industrial expansion. Overview of Deloro The village of Deloro is in Hastings county, about 5 miles from the village of Marmora, the site of the old Marmora iron works and the more recent Marmoraton iron mine. In this area, the Canadian Shield meets the Great Lakes lowlands. The first settlement in the vicinity occurred in the 1820s and was associated with the Marmora iron works. Settlement grew around agriculture. Gold was discovered in Hastings county in 1868. Deloro - the name derives from gold - developed as a concentrated settlement in proximity to several gold mines and the related processing activities. By 1901, substantial smelting works were successfully producing gold and arsenic from local ores. The village was developing as a company town within the framework of benevolent paternalism. For reasons associated with markets and with local ore supplies, the Deloro mills were idle for a period beginning in 1902. Developments in later periods connected Deloro to world events. In 1903, silver was discovered at Cobalt, Ontario. By 1907, M.J. O'Brien, who owned mines at Cobalt, had purchased the Deloro works and was using them to process Cobalt-area ores*.

"Some key control variables of industrial processes, associated with product quality, often cannot be measured directly or frequently enough to establish adequate control. In such cases, it is possible to use available measurements to provide a prediction for these process variables and use them in a control strategy, thereby giving rise to what is now commonly called a softsensor.In some industrial grinding circuits, the on-line particle size analyzer is shared between various sampling points. Therefore, for a given location, the actual measurement is only available every 10 to 20 minutes, a delay which is unacceptable for automatic control purposes. To alleviate this problem, a softsensor based on an artificial neural network has been investigated. First, the structure of the neural network and different schemes for the training process are analyzed. Then, the performance of the neural network softsensor is compared with other inferential methods such as ARMA models and Kalman filters.IntroductionGRAHM, French acronym of the Research Group on Computer Applications in the Mineral Industry at Laval University, began in 1990 a research project on Knowledge Based Automatic Control (KBAC). This project, sponsored by a consortium of eight mining companies and the federal and provincial governments, seeked to screen advanced (knowledge-based) methods for data processing (filtering, mass balancing, etc) and automatic control (model-based) for their use in the mineral processing operations and the transfer of the project results to the sponsor companies.In parallel to more academic research work, a number of case-studies have been undertaken with the cooperation of partner companies. Among such works, a very successful one has been the design and installation of a new control strategy for one of the Kidd Creek (Falconbridge Ltd.) grinding circuits. This project was related to the evaluation of a number of control strategies and the implementation of one of them, as selected by the plant management, in the concentrator.A total of sixteen control schemes were evaluated on one of the dynamic phenomenological simulators developed at GRAHM, a trademark of this research group [ l]. The calibration of the simulator models was done based on industrial data gathered by GRAHM and Kidd Creek personnel. Then, the simulator was used to test the performance of various PID-based control schemes, designed to achieve the control objectives set by the Kidd Creek personnel. The best scheme proposed called for controlling the cyclone overflow particle size by manipulating the water addition rate to the cyclone feed box and the circulating load by manipulating the circuit ore feed. The particle size analyzer (PSI-200) available for monitoring the product size, was unfortunately shared (multiplexed) among various streams of the plant, which meant a 14 min delay between two consecutive readings for any particular stream. This induced the plant personnel to choose an alternative control strategy, one which controlled the cyclone feed density instead of the cyclone overflow particle size."

In 1979, John Peacey and William (Bill) Davenport published The Iron Blast Furnace Theory and Practice billed as "An up to date and comprehensive treatment of blast furnaces from fundamental principles to modern operations" (back cover). As a 1979 graduate of McGill University’s Metallurgical Engineering program, I belonged to the last "beta" student group which completed the prescribed blast furnace course work before The Iron Blast Furnace Theory and Practice was published. As my career developed, I become an international blast furnace consultant and have worked with blast furnace operators and raw material suppliers on 5 continents. The blast furnace is the dominate iron making process responsible for 70% of global steel production. Blast furnace engineers have implemented many improvements by manipulating the blast furnace process metallurgy using the principles presented by Peacey and Davenport to reduce coke consumption and increase oxygen usage and blast furnace productivity. This paper briefly summarizes some key principles presented by Peacey and Davenport (1979), describes process improvements made by blast furnace operators over the 35 years since The Iron Blast Furnace Theory and Practice was published and outlines important future developments in blast furnace technology.

Methane is recognized as one of the prime causes of underground mine disasters around the globe. A cost-effective mine ventilation system and methane control is required to ensure a safe and productive environment in an underground mine whilst keeping energy usage and operating cost at minimum. Typically methane enters a mine environment or tunnel from localized distributed sources at high initial concentration. Hence, an understanding of its dispersion from discrete sources is important to design a methane management system via effective ventilation. This study employs computational fluid dynamics to model methane dispersion in an underground tunnel which has a number of discrete sources of methane and effective ways to dilute and or disperse it. Air flow distribution within the tunnel as well as methane dispersion is simulated by solving the governing transport equations subject to appropriate boundary conditions. First, the effectiveness of ventilation duct placement is examined. Several possibilities are explored and investigated. It is found that the common configuration utilized in underground mine performs best as compared to other configurations in maintaining the concentration of methane below permissible levels. Next, a novel intermittent airflow ventilation system is proposed and evaluated via simulation with the goal of reducing the energy cost whilst maintaining methane level in the mining face below the allowable level. Parametric studies are conducted to investigate effects of various factors influencing the effectiveness and performance of this novel intermittent ventilation system. This study will provide some new ideas for designing an efficient and effective underground mine ventilation system by lowering the net average amount of air that needs to be circulated in the tunnel for a safe operation. A corrosion survey was performed on ten selected H-piles which support a reinforced concrete wharf located at Trepassey, Newfoundland. Approximately 900 thickness measurements were taken at twelve different locations in each off our zones on the steel piles: the splash (atmospheric) zone, the intertidal zone, the low tide zone and the submerged zone. Results show that over the 2o-year life of the wharf, corrosion has been most severe in the splash, low tide and submerged zones with average corrosion rates for the flanges of 6.95, 9.45 and 6.86 mils per year (mpy}, respectively, and average corrosion rates for the webs of 5.13, 4.12 and 3.45 mpy, respectively. Minimal attack was found in the intertidal zone where the average corrosion rate was only 1.66 mpy on the flanges and 1.37 mpy on the webs. Such a pattern of attack is frequently observed f or steel piles partly submerged in seawater. The abnormally low corrosion rate associated with the intertidal zone is generally explained as being due to cathodic protection induced by the high corrosion rate in the adjacent low tide zone. Analysis of the corrosion data obtained for the Trepassey wharf would suggest that this explanation might be incorrect. An alternate hypothesis has been brought forward which better accounts for the extremely low corrosion rate observed in the intertidal zones of these piles.

"Concentrate dewatering operations have a significant influence on the economics of base metal beneficiation. The expenditures f or energy and labour per tonne of product are high. The relatively low efficiencies of standard techniques present inducements for process modifications. Development efforts at several Noranda concentrators led to process changes which improved productivity, namely, agitated pulp storage in large vessels, process automation and pressure filtration.IntroductionA program was initiated in 1968 with the aim of improving utilization of manpower and equipment in dewatering operations. The following considerations motivated us in this effort: Firstly, filters and dryers had traditionally been operated continuously and in step with grinding and flotation circuits. The demand for labour and equipment operating time was fixed and was not determined by the rate of concentrate production.Secondly, dewatering equipment had usually been designed to handle the concentrate tonnages which were produced when mill feed grades were high; therefore the equipment operated at less than capacity when treating ores of average metal content. The first goal was the separation of the flotation process from concentrate dewatering by development of a practical storage system for concentrate pulps . A second objective was the gradual introduction of dependable automatic controls. The steep increase in energy costs after 1973 added urgency to the search for dewatering processes which were highly energy efficient."

The purpose of the paper is to study the smelting process of copper concentrate with high Cu/S ratio produced in Africa or other areas around the world and theoretically analyze the influence of slag type on the smelting process. The paper has compared the processes used successfully in smelters, including CAPEX and OPEX and other factors, to provide reference for the industry to select the best process under specific conditions. INTRODUCTION At present, a great amount of copper concentrates with high Cu/S ratio, with chalcocite being the major source of copper, have been produced or are about to be produced in the Copperbelt in Africa and other countries in the world. The copper concentrate is usually high in copper (~30–55wt.%) and low in sulfur (~10–15wt.%). The conventional processes of smelting-converting and roasting-leaching-electro-winning for treating this type of concentrate is high energy and materials consumption such as electric power\fuels\flux et al. The direct-to-blister (one-step) smelting process can be considered favorable due to a reduction in processing steps. Up to now, there are four copper smelters in the world operating with the direct-to-blister smelting process. There certainly are problems in the process such as high copper content in the slag, strict operation requirement of slag cleaning electric furnace, etc. Except technical issues, the impact of factors on economical aspect such as power and material cost needs to be considered comprehensively in process selection. In this paper the technical issues of direct-to-blister smelting process, including slag treatment process, were analyzed and the comparison to the conventional processes and economic analysis of direct- to-blister smelting process to treat high Cu/S ratio concentrate were done.

A clarification technology used by municipalities to produce high-quality drinking water, polish sewage treatment plant effluent and handle combined sewer overflows has recently found new applications in the mines and iron and steel industry. This patented process, known as ACTIFLO®, utilizes microsand in a ballasted flocculation process to enhance the settling characteristics of suspended solids, increasing the efficiency sufficiently to achieve a clarifier footprint that is smaller than the one of a conventional clarifier. ACTIFLO® rise rates vary from 40 to 170 m/h with a total system hydraulic retention time of about 10 minutes. The result is a clarification system so compact that a full-scale system can operate as a trailer-mounted unit for temporary applications or as a permanent installation in facilities with space limitations. This paper explains the process and presents case studies in which this innovative technology was used at mines and steelmaking facilities to meet compliance requirements.

It will also review the analysis of various case studies for the expansion of the project to its full potential, and discuss the impact of the recent structural change in the copper market on the development of a large low-grade deposit such as Valley.IntroductionIn 1964 Cominco participated, along with a number of other companies and individuals, in the formation of Valley Copper Mines Ltd. This company was formed in order to facilitate exploration on a large number of mineral claims held by these parties in British Columbia's Highland Valley, approximately 400 km northeast of Vancouver (Fig. I). Cominco 's ownership of Valley Copper was gradually increased over the years bot h through shares gained for exploration expenditures and through shares purchased on the open market. By the mid- 1970sCominco' s interest in Valley Copper exceeded 80%.ExplorationExploration from 1964 to 1969 led to the discovery of a massive porphyry copper depo sit now known as the Valley orebody. A claim boundary divided the deposit with 80% of it on Valley Copper claims and 20070 on claims held by Bethlehem Copper which was already mining adjacent copper orebodies. During the period when the Valley ore body was discovered, exploration by other companies resulted in the discovery of the large Lornex and Highrnont deposits nearby. The stage was now set for the Highland Valley to become an important copper-producing area (Fig. 2)."

"This paper describes the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a tool for mineral exploration by using the Eskay Creek area of northern British Columbia as an example. Data entry, analysis and output are discussed. Examples of some of the capabilities of the technology are presented.The main benefit of the technology is being able to perform complex and sophisticated searches of large and diverse data sets to highlight exploration targets. A GIS is a powerful data management tool that can be used in mineral exploration. It is a computer based system that is designed for the collection, storage and analysis of objects and phenomena where geographic location is an important characteristic. The main function of the GIS is to produce information for the geologist from a variety of sources (geology, geophysics, geochemistry, mineral deposits and so forth) quickly and efficiently. This allows the geologist to examine large amounts of data in a fraction of the time than can be done using conventional manual methods."

"Considerable gold and silver values are lost to flotation tailing from both the South ern Tail orebody and the Main Zone orebody,The underlying mineralogical assemblage of the two ore types is quite different. This paper describes the research strategy employed to determine an economical method to scavenge gold and silver from flotation tailing.Much of the unrecovered gold in the Southern Tail ore is associated with arsenopyrite while silver losses are probably as unliberated tetrahedrite and minor silver-bearing sulphosalts. Processing alternatives tested include bulk sulphide recovery by flotation and gravity, selective pyrite-arsenopyrite separation, cyanidation, and oxidation pretreatments such as pressure leaching and bioleaching to enhance cyanidation response. Gold losses in the Main Zone ore are more closely associated with silver-bearing minerals, pyrite, and siliceous gangue and consequently respond more readily to conventional tank cyanidation. The 5 300 tid carbon-in-leach circuit to treat Main Zone flotation tailing is described in detail.IntroductionEquity Silver Mines Limited's open-pit silver mine, a 70% owned subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, is located 37 km southeast of Houston in north central British Columbia. The deposit consists of two major ore zones, Main Zone and Southern Tail (Fig. I). These zones are within a sequence of Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks striking 015 degree s and dipping 45 degrees west. Feasibility ore reserves were 28 million tonnes grading 106 g A g/t, 0.96 g Au !t and 0.38% Cu a strip ratio of 2.2 to I. A detailed mineralogical description has been presented and a comparison of the two ore zones is shown in Table I."

When applying numerical techniques to problems of deformation of rocks, the body to be analyzed is divided into small portions and is represented by a system of points linked together with the neighboring points. In the so-called distinct element modeling, the particles in the system are directly connected by springs and a contact law is used to specify forces on the particles to simulate the mechanical behavior of the body. The relation between the spring stiffness and commonly measured material properties, such as the Young’s modulus and the Poisson’s ratio, should be known a priori. For the general case of a random packing of particles, the relation is found by means of a process in which a system of particles and set of parameters are prepared to simulate a set of specimen-size test and then the input parameters are chosen to match the measured material properties. The validity of the numerical result is only demonstrated by comparison model behaviors with the measured responses. The process includes trial-and-error manner, therefore, no model is complete to reproduce the mechanical properties. In this paper, a relation between the spring stiffness and the elastic constants; the Young’s modulus and the Poisson’s ratio, is introduced to a three-dimensional distinct lattice spring method. Two simple numerical examples will be presented to demonstrate the performance of the method with the procedure for the determination of the spring stiffness.

Résumé : la mine d?Elhammam, opération du groupe minier Marocain Managem, est située au sud de la ville de Meknes à 63 km, elle exploite un gisement de fluorine depuis 1974. La minéralisation se présente sous forme de deux filons principaux orientés N45° avec un pendage variant de 65 à 90° NW, entre ces deux filons on note la présence d?une succession de filons satellites sécants. La méthode d?exploitation pratiquée depuis le démarrage de la mine est celle des chambres magasins, elle assure une cadence d?extraction annuelle de 250000 tonnes. Cette méthode favorisée par une très bonne compétence mécanique des épontes de la minéralisation a offert à l?exploitation une rentabilité très satisfaisante grâce à son faible coût mine. Les travaux de recherche géologique menés en parallèle à l?exploitation ont permis la découverte d?un nouveau secteur ?K-Est Gouaïda? (KEG) qui fait l?extension nord-est du gisement principal, la minéralisation de ce secteur se présente sous forme de deux filons très étendus latéralement (900 m d?extension) et présentant une puissance minéralisée irrégulière et très faible 1.2 m en moyenne, les épontes de la minéralisation sont constituées de schistes de qualité mécanique très faible. Vers la fin des années 1990, l?exploitation s?est orientée vers le développement minier du secteur KEG. Ce développement consiste à faire le choix adéquat de la méthode et de l?infrastructure minière pour l?exploitation de ce nouveau secteur, KEG. La méthode des chambres magasins, pratiquée dans le gisement principal avec un faible coût mine, n?est pas praticable dans le nouveau secteur à cause de la qualité de ses terrains, l?irrégularité de la morphologie de sa minéralisation et de la faible puissance des ses filons. Seule la méthode des tranches montantes remblayées (TMR) peut être applicable techniquement vu les spécifications suscitées de la nouvelle minéralisation, la TMR doit être appliquée sous sa variante mécanisée pour faire face au niveau exigé de la production. Après le pilotage de l?exploitation par TMR mécanisée dans le secteur KEG, il a été confirmé que cette méthode donne une grande satisfaction en matière de stabilité des terrains, sécurité, sélectivité, productivité et récupération du gisement, néanmoins elle reste pénalisée par un coût mine trop élevé pour garder le niveau de rentabilité recherché par l?exploitation d?un produit de faible valeur marchande telle que la fluorine. Dans l?objectif de rentabiliser l?exploitation du secteur KEG qui représente en réserves l?équivalent d?une durée de vie de 4 à 5 ans et d?assurer la pérennité de l?activité, l?exploitation en collaboration avec Reminex, la filiale d?ingénierie de Managem, a adapté une nouvelle variante de la TMR mécanisée dite TMR avec plan incliné sur remblai. Cette nouvelle variante de la TMR consiste à réduire au maximum les travaux dans le stérile en reconstituant un plan incliné sur le remblai à l?intérieur des filons pour faire évoluer en vertical l?exploitation des tranches en montant vers la tête d?un panneau de minerai. La variante des tranches montantes remblayées mécanisées avec plan incliné sur remblai a été imaginée et appliquer en 1978 dans la mine de fluorine de Burc située au Sud-Ouest de la France (Sicard et Mailloux, 1983). Imaginée pour une cadence annuelle de 30000 tonnes et une mécanisation très modérée cette variante a été adaptée par l?exploitation de la mine d?Elhammam en 2002 pour un haut degré de mécanisation et une cadence d?extraction annuelle de 250000 tonnes de minerai. Cette variante de la TMR est appliquée depuis le début de 2003 dans les chantiers du secteur KEG, elle présente les mêmes avantages techniques que la TMR mécanisée classique et elle a permis la réduction du volume des travaux d?infrastructure de 17.65 m à 6.25 m de travaux par 1000 tonnes de minerai. Ceci s?est traduit par une baisse du coût technique de la mine de 34% ce qui a donné un nouveau souffle à la mine pour assurer sa production et pour poursuivre la recherche géologique d?éventuelles zones à mettre en valeur.

"A program of mapping, sampling and testing to determine the potential of the aggregate resources throughout Newfoundland and Labrador was commenced in 1978. A 6-km-wide corridor parallel to all transportation routes was selected as the study area.The study consisted of a preliminary surficial interpretation followed by field mapping and sampling. Granular resources were sampled at a 500-m interval and non-granular materials were sampled at a 1.5- to 2-km interval. Data were gathered on landforms and stratigraphy as well as a field description of the sample and deposit types. Particle-size and lithologic analyses of the samples were also conducted.The locations of samples and deposits were mapped on 1:50,000 topographic base maps and summarized for publication at a 1:250,000 scale. Surficial geology maps were produced at a 1:50,000 scale. A computer program is being developed for the search and retrieval of field data.The first phase of the Inventory of Aggregate Resources program is nearing completion and to date has collected information on approximately 9,500 samples throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This data will be used to provide f or the effective management of these vital non-renewable aggregate resources.The mineral aggregate industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is very competitive, but undercapitalized when compared to other provinces. The demand for aggregates is forecasted to increase to in excess of23 million tons per annum by the year 2002.In terms of over-all mineral production, the extraction of sand, gravel and stone has a significant impact when compared to other minerals in terms of value and tonnage produced.IntroductionThe province of Newfoundland has approximately 18,000 km of coastline. A large proportion of the population lives in coastal communities where, traditionally, beaches have been a major source of construction materials. Beaches have, therefore, often been subjected to overutilization, resulting in erosion of back beach areas or adjacent headlands."

Originally the focus of Deak Resources Corporation Business Plan was to establish a method for treating small gold and possibly base metal mineral deposits located in the Kirkland Lake - Noranda area of Northeastern Ontario, Northwestern Quebec at a central treatment facility. Since the establishment of this original business plan in 1988 other processing options have availed themselves for handling the base metal ores off site at a central facility which may preclude their processing at Deak.The site selected for the Deak processing plant was Kerr Addison's Virginiatown operation. At the time this property was acquired from the Receiver following Golden Shield Resources' Bankruptcy in 1989 the mill had been processing in the order of 1, 100 SDT per calendar day through one processing module; a module originally designed to process 1,500 SDT/day of a free milling gold ore. This tonnage level however had not been achieved since 1966 when an average throughput of 1481 SDT per calendar day was recorded.In order to realize Deak's overall Business Plan it would be necessary to expand the mills processing capabilities to provide:(1) A 2200 SOT per day circuit capable of processing a free milling, medium work index gold ore;(2) a 1 ,000 SDT per day flotation and/or cyanidation circuit capable of processing refractory gold bearing materials containing refractory minerals (i.e. copper) that should be removed prior to cyanidation; and possibly(3) a 1200 to 1500 SDT/day base metal circuit capable of processing the broad range of Deaks' Base Metal Property ores. If this circuit were introduced it would be completed in two tonnage phases.Further, it was recognized when operations resumed under Deak in 1990 that the existing tailings dam was suitable for, and had sufficient capacity for additional gold tailings with necessary physical modifications and changes in disposal techniques (including the construction of containment storage cells) that would allow storage for an additional 3.4 million tons of gold ore tailings approximately 1.0 million of which has been deposited since 1990. The focus of Deak's long term tailings disposal strategy is to acquire the Barber Lake Basin which is currently adjoined to our main tailings system which will provide an additional 10 million tons of storage capacity.

"Major industrial restructuring, which started to manifest itself in the mature economies of the Western World and Japan in the 1970s, will accelerate in the 1980s and 1990s. Conventional heavy manufacturing industries will continue to lose ground to lighter processing/assembly operations and the new wave of high technology, information and service sectors. The decline in heavy manufacturing has severely impacted on the steel industries of Western Europe, the U.S.A . and Japan.World trade in metallurgical coal has shifted correspondingly, with declining demand in the mature developed countries being only partially offset by large increases in the steel intensity of the newly-industrialized countries (NICs) of the Far East, Latin America and, to a more limited extent, the Middle East and Africa. These trends will be accentuated in future years with direct implications for the distribution of metallurgical coal trade. This paper discusses, in quantitative terms, such changes in the 1980s and 1990s, and examines the implications for, and impacts on, Canadian metallurgical coal exporters.IntroductionThe twenty-year period from the early 1950 s to the early 1970s was characterized by inexorable growth in consumer demand and industrial expansion in most of the advanced countries of the western world. Long- term forecasting during this period typically used linear extrapolation techniques which , despite their simplicity, invariably ended up predicting future demand and production level s with uncanny accuracy. Times have changed!The last decade has been characterized by a n abysmal failure of our economies to respond to simple long-term, linear growth patterns. We appear to have entered a new world in transition, where we can observe a wave of dying or sunset industries reluctantly being submerged by a wave of emerging or sunrise industries.This paper is aimed a t examining the evidence for long-term industrial restructuring trend s. For want of a better word, these so -called, megatrends are then used to predict future demand level s and spatial distribution of steel development and , hence, metallurgical coal trade. It is tempting to correlate the decline in economic activity in the western world with the first Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' (OPEC) crisis of 1973. This crisis was probably no more than the straw that broke the camel's back, as the megatrends and embryo s of major industrial restructuring were already evident. Today these megatrends are merely more apparent and transparent than they were ten years ago.While the concept of industrial restructuring is the new economic buzz word, the process was at work, to a lesser degree even throughout the period of strong economic growth of the post-Second World War boom. "This paper describes the use of vector analysis for determining the intersection of mineral deposit veins. The mathematical evolution of the analysis is outlined.IntroductionMany mineral deposits can be characterized by sets of intersecting veins. Often a vein will have a steep dip and may intersect with another similar vein. Finding the intersections of these veins is usually done by graphical means. Structural geologists, by the methods of descriptive geometry, can usual ly predict where intersections of veins will occur. This method normally requires accurate drafting and layout of the problem and does not always lend itself to solution in the field.Another method for solving this problem involves the use of vector analysis, which is easily adapted to hand-held programmable calculators. It is assumed at the outset that the reader is familiar with the dot and cross products used in vector analysis. Two excellent references are cited at the end of this note for convenience.A plane, in general, is defined by three points. The points of interest here are the points where three vertical drillholes penetrate the vein, or plane, in question. The elevations of these three points are best referred to sea level. This requires knowing the elevation of the collar of the drillhole above sea level and the drillhole depth from the collar to the vein. The elevation of the intersection point is then found by subtracting the hole depth from the collar elevation. These three points now define the plane of the vein. A similar set of three points will define a second vein, and it is our object to show analytically their intersection if it exists."

Stillwater Mining Company commenced construction and development of the East Boulder underground mine in 1998. This new PGM mine is situated adjacent to the East Boulder River approximately 35 miles south of Big Timber, Montana. Project planning and development incorporated detailed collaboration between the regulatory agencies, concerned citizens and mine personnel. A unique ?good neighbour agreement? was established with a local environmental group who have become actively involved in the review of ongoing site development and the implementation of environmental and compliance monitoring. Environmental management systems allow for integrated management of tailings, waste rock and water in order to minimize surface disturbances and to prevent adverse impacts to the East Boulder River. Long-term site development plans contemplate implementation of comingled waste rock and paste tailings. Water management capabilities allow biological treatment of all excess mine water in order to reduce nitrogen loadings prior to land application disposal by means of spray evaporation, snow making and land application. The comprehensive waste and water management plans have also been integrated with staged mine development and interim reclamation requirements.

"Brogan coal containing mean averages of 6,93% w/w total sulphur (1.1% sulphate sulphur, 1.6% organic sulphur and 4.24% pyritic sulphur) and 16.34% mineral ash was used as the test coal in these studies.Shake-culture leaching studies on seven size fractions of the coal, ranging in size from 0.045 mm to 1.7 mm, showed that the rate of pyrite leaching was inversely proportional to the particle size. As the use of continuous stirred tank reactors would be uneconomical for the reclamation of waste coal, column leaching studies were initiated on coal sieved to >6.35 mm to < 12.7 mm, The leachate was monitored for all metal ions and the release of iron was used to monitor the rate of pyrite oxidation . Measurable amounts of Zn, Co, Ni, Mn, and V, all of which can replace iron in the pyrite crystal structure, were released during the initial stages of leaching. Further, high concentrations of AI, Ca and Sr and trace amounts of Sn, As. Se, B, Ca, Cr, Si, and Ti were detected in the column effluents.These studies suggest that bacterial leaching will remove the pyrite and qualitative amounts of environmentally undesirable trace metals from the coal if such a process is developed for waste coal reclamation.IntroductionIn 1947, Colmer and Hinkle showed that acid mine drainage was the result of an oxidative attack of the iron-mineral sulphides by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans to produce sulphuric acid . Ashmead (1955) proposed the use of these organisms to desulphurize coal , but the subsequent research effort was concentrated on the metabolism and physiology of these extreme acidophiles.A limited number of studies have been reported on the bacterial leaching of pyrite from coal (Silverman et al., 1963; Dugan, 1977). However, the bacterial oxidation of pyrite is a self-limiting first-order reaction, probably due to the precipitation of Fe(OH)J and elemental sulphur , which progressively inhibits intimate contact between the bacterial cells and the sulphide-mineral surface. Consequently, the best pyrite oxidation experiments with coal reported to date required five days to remove 97070 of the pyrite (Dugan &Apel , 1978) using mixed cultures of T. ferrooxidans and T. thiooxidans."
