Deep-seated landslides are characterized by slow time-dependent movements induced by constant gravitational creep, and periods of acceleration associated with stress changes within the rock and the preexisting fracture network. Natural stress changes are typically caused by seasonal variations in surface temperatures and groundwater pressures, but also by rare and more violent events such as earthquakes. These processes are responsible for cyclic loading and unloading that leads to rock mass damage, fatigue and progressive failure with time, and may explain sudden, unexpected rock slope acceleration phases. In this work, we present a set of distinct-element models to investigate and compare the role of hydromechanical fatigue and seismic fatigue in the history of a deep-seated landslide. Hydromechanical fatigue arises from the fluctuation of pore pressure in fractures accompanying periods of significant groundwater recharge. In alpine areas, there are usually one or two cycles per year associated with snow melt and intense rainfall periods. In the presence of a deep confined aquifer within the rock slope, the amplitude of pressure fluctuations may reach values of 0.25-0.5 MPa. Hydromechanical models considering such pressure changes are able to reproduce observed slope accelerations-decelerations phases. Substantial accelerations may occur even in the absence of a cycle of exceptional amplitude, depending on the current state of fatigue. At a given time, one or more fractures may be critically-stressed, and a small change in applied stress is enough to cause local failure and induce a crisis of enhanced slope acceleration. This is augmented if the rock slope contains planes of weakness associated with its tectonic history, glacial debuttressing, etc. The corresponding behaviour is analogous to laboratory experiments on rock and metal fatigue. Similar fatigue effects have also been proposed for repeated earthquake events in seismically active regions. Unlike hydromechanical stress changes that occur in a more localized portion of the rock slope, those induced by passing seismic waves involve the entire rock mass. Moreover, the frequency and amplitude of stress perturbations due to earthquakes are different than those induced by pore pressure variations, although both likely contribute in combination to the degradation and progressive failure of large deep-seated landslides when both are present. The results presented illustrate that: (1) assessment of slope stability near critical infrastructure (e.g., hydroelectric reservoirs) should not only consider static stability, but also failure mechanisms related to fatigue that evolve over time and may result in an apparently stable slope progressing towards a critical state due to relatively small but repetitive stress changes; and that (2) characterization of fatigue processes affecting a deep-seated landslide requires multiparametric continuous monitoring at different observation points.

Main ventilation fans are used in all the mines and they run continuously 24 hours a day and 365 days in a year. Any improvement in their performance can lead to considerable power saving. The basic principle for selection, operations, and related measures are discussed in brief in the paper. The contributions of different elements of mine fan on its performance are discussed in brief. The means to improve efficiency of a running fan is also discussed and the importance of saving even 1 Kwh is elaborated. It is found that the cost of the energy saved may even permit a replacement fan to be procured in a few years time.

"In the production of high quality steel, the understanding of the interactions between liquid steel and refractories and of their effect on steel purity and cleanness are becoming more and more important.An experimental study has been per-formed in order to estimate the importance of the reaction between a MgO-based tundish refractory and an Al-killed steel. The results show a pollution of the liquid steel:•the silicon content of the liquid steel increases due to the reduction of the silica of the refractory by the aluminum contained in the steel; and•a reoxidation of the steel occurs and the formation of an oxide layer on the refracto-ry, mainly composed of spinel crystals and of Ca-aluminates is observed.The transfer mechanisms of the various elements are analyzed."

THE Canadian Malartic mine is in Western Quebec, about fifty miles east of Noranda and forty miles south of Amos on the Canadian National railway. The recently constructed branch of the railway from Rouyn to Senneterre passes half a mile north of the mine. HISTORY he property was discovered in 1923 'by St. Barbe Sladen, H. S. Kennedy, and J. C. Carroll, who were prospecting for an Ottawa syndicate and found gold in a small quartz vein near the present workings. Five claims were staked and were optioned to an exploration company, who allowed the option to lapse after surface sampling and diamond drilling eighteen holes. Some months later, the property was sold to Malartic Gold Mines, Limited, who carried on development until 1929. A vertical shaft was sunk and exploration work done on three levels, supplemented by diamond drilling 16 surface holes and 62 underground holes. The work indicated that the important ore occurred in two silicified.zones in schisted greywacke which intersected west of the shaft and were believed to be controlled by a drag-fold. The ore grade was not considered sufficiently favourable to war-rant an operation, and work was terminated. With the advance in the price of gold to $35 per ounce, interest was revived and a new Company, Canadian Malartic Gold Mines, Limited, was incorporated for further development. The shareholders of the old Company accepted a new position under which their interests were protected, and sufficient treasury shares were optioned to Ventures, Limited, and Sudbury Basin Mines, Limited, to provide funds for further exploration of the prop-erty to determine whether, under the new economic conditions, profitable operation would be possible, and, if advisable, to provide the equipment for production. Additional claims were acquired, bringing the total area up to 1,029 acres.

"This paper describes development of an integrated chloride process for separation and purification of REEs. The process includes atmospheric leaching of ore/concentrate with mixed chloride lixiviant containing HCl and MgCl2 followed by bulk recovery of REEs, dissolution of the bulk intermediate product, and separation of individual REEs by solvent extraction (SX) process steps. Mixed chloride leaching technology provides the opportunity to regenerate the lixiviant, while the addition of MgCl2 in HCl enhances the hydrogen ion activity by orders of magnitude increasing REE extraction efficiency at a lower concentration of HCl. An individual REE separation process developed by Innovation Metals Corp. is being piloted at a state-of-the-art facility at Process Research ORTECH Inc. in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The SX process includes the separation of light REEs (La – Nd), medium REEs (Sm – Gd) and heavy REEs (Tb – Lu plus Y) from leach liquor followed by individual REE separation. Each SX circuit proceeds by multistage extraction followed by scrubbing and stripping. The process is chloride based and reagents are recycled, reducing waste generation and optimizing water usage to reduce environmental impact.INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (La to Lu plus Y) exhibit a range of unique magnetic, electronic, catalytic and optical properties. Due to these special properties, the application of REEs is increasing and they are found in components for wind power generation, hybrid electric cars, catalytic converters, and many electronic devices.Rare earth elements (REEs) are commonly divided in two groups: light rare earth elements (LREEs) and heavy rare earth elements (HREEs). Light rare earth elements include elements from lanthanum (La) to neodymium (Nd). Although promethium (Pm) is considered an LREE it is unstable and scarcely occurs in nature and is generally excluded. Heavy rare earth elements include elements from samarium (Sm) to lutetium (Lu) plus yttrium. Although rare earth elements are not rare and the rare earth oxides are scattered around the globe, over 95% of REEs+Y are currently produced in China (Pitts, 2011). On one hand the Chinese government is restricting the export of rare earth elements and on the other hand the demand for REEs+Y is increasing in the rest of the world. This has created an imbalance in the supply and demand of rare earth elements and has led to a rush for developing new rare earth projects."

"Development of a process for the treatment of a nickel copper matte rich in the minerals heazlewoodite, chalcocite and bornite has demonstrated significant base metal recoveries and metal separation efficiencies. The determination of chemical and mineralogical changes occurring in the individual leaching stages in laboratory experiments has enabled a better understanding of the complex leaching chemistry. The chemistry and mineralogy of the piloting and laboratory processes are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe nickel-copper sulfide ores of the South African Bushveld Complex are among the most important Platinum Group Metal (PGM) bearing ores, and contain the world’s largest reserves of platinum. The treatment used in the recovery of PGMs from these ores includes three types of processes, namely ore concentration using physical techniques such as flotation and gravity separation, concentration by pyrometallurgical means, hydrometallurgical extraction of the base metals followed by the PGMs. Following milling of the ore, flotation involves the separation of high value minerals from gangue by taking advantage of the differences in their hydrophobicity. These differences are generally maximized through the use of a surfactant or wetting agent. Concentrates are then thermally treated and melted which brings about physical and chemical changes that enable the recovery of base metals and PGMs. The main aim of the smelting and converting process is to separate and eliminate the valuable metals from the bulk of the unwanted gangue and essentially all of the iron and to concentrate the metal VALUES (into a high grade converter matte. The matte can be further enriched by magnetic separation, producing a PGM-rich magnetic fraction and a base metal-rich non-magnetic fraction. The magnetic fraction is treated by hydrometallurgical processes to produce a PGM concentrate which is further refined to separate and purify the individual metals. The non-magnetic fraction is treated to produce marketable metal VALUES (such as nickel, copper, cobalt and to a lesser extent PGMs. The principal objective of any hydrometallurgical extractive process is to leach the desired elements selectively into an aqueous phase so as to separate them from the bulk of the material. "During the period 1958-1980 seven deep shafts were sunk from the surface in the UK. From 1977 until 1989 sixteen deep shafts were sunk in the UK, all concrete lined. Subsequently from 1989 up to the present day no deep shafts have been sunk in the UK, a period of 30 years. Developments in the design and construction of deep shaft linings in the UK therefore were predominantly carried out throughout the period 1977–1989. This knowledge is recorded in several published papers by the author over that period which will be referred to in the paper. INTRODUCTION The paper includes a review of past precedent for the design of deep shaft concrete linings in the UK and sets out the principles for future designs, including the design load to be adopted and Factors of Safety (SFs) to be used in the design. Hydrostatic pressure increases with depth from the surface and therefore the concrete lining must increase in thickness and strength throughout its depth to resist the pressure. High strength concrete mixes were developed to enable economic linings to reach greater depths and these will be detailed. The ground conditions to sink through in the UK consist of predominantly competent (self-standing when excavated) rock, which can be water bearing, and hence a hydrostatic pressure resisting lining is required. The paper describes the construction measures needed to produce a dry shaft by way of pour length, joint detail, backwall grouting and joint sealing details. PAST PRECEDENT FOR UK DEEP SHAFT SINKING AND LINING Seven deep shafts were sunk from the surface in the UK from 1957–1977 over a 20-year period (Auld, 1987). These are listed in Table 1. Three shafts were for British Coal, two were for Cleveland Potash Ltd and two were for the Central Electricity Generating Board. The British Coal shafts were 5.486 m and 7.315 m internal diameter to depths of 550 m and 780 m, respectively. At 5.5 m internal diameter and a depth of 1150 m, the two Boulby Mine shafts for Cleveland Potash Ltd are currently the deepest shafts in the UK. The two Central Electricity Generating Board shafts of 5 m and 10 m internal diameter, to depths of 255 m and 440 m, respectively, were ventilation shafts for a pumped storage scheme. Six of the shafts were sunk by Thyssen (GB) Ltd and one by Cementation Mining Ltd."

The types of equipment available for generating a plasma have been reviewed. The efficiency and potential of the plasma generating equipment used in performing extractive metallurgical reactions have been determined. A general classification of the reactions that might be per-formed in a plasma has been proposed. Experimental work done on extractive metallurgical plasma reactions, heat transfer between the plasma and solids, and the quench of the products of plasma reaction has been summarized. From the preliminary results it appears that the high-intensity are or the transpiration-cooled anode plasma torch offer the most promising areas for further research. C ONSIDERABLE world-wide research effort is currently being devoted to the development of processing technologies which employ the new high-temperature generating devices that have appeared over the past few years. The plasma flames produced by these devices offer the potential for subjecting materials to any single gas or mixture of gases at temperatures up to 20,000°K. "IntroductionAgrium’s history in fertilizer production and marketing goes back to 1931. Today, Agrium Inc. is a world leader in the production, distribution, and marketing of fertilizers and related products to the agricultural industry. Agrium is the largest North American producer of nitrogen fertilizers, a major producer of phosphate and potash fertilizers, and a world leader in fertilizer wholesale distribution and retail marketing. The mine at Kapuskasing is located some 40 km southwest of Kapuskasing, Ontario (Fig. 1). It has been developed to supply high-quality, low-cost phosphate rock to the company’s Redwater, Alberta facility, where it is an ingredient in ammonium phosphate fertilizer production. The Kapuskasing mine is the only phosphate mine in Canada and will rank as one of the highest-grade phosphate mines in the world (Clark and Duncan, 1999). Apatite is the principal ore mineral mined at the Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations.GeologyThe first record of exploration in the area was from a program executed by Continental Copper Mines in 1955 which evaluated the magnetic anomaly located in the Cargill and Cumming townships for its base metal potential. Intermittent exploration of the base metal potential of this magnetic anomaly continued in the following years, until the phosphate potential of the area was first examined in 1974 by International Minerals Corporation which recognized the presence of a layer of apatite sands overlying the carbonatite host rocks.The local geology consists of a core complex of multi-phased carbonatite rocks which are surrounded by a ring of pyroxenite, and have provided a U-Pb age date of 1907 Ma ± 4 (Sage, 1988). These two rock types are in turn situated within quartz diorite gneisses that form a large portion of the Kapuskasing Structural Zone (Fig. 2). The carbonatite host rock is sub-divided into two sub-types: sovite and rauhaugite. The sovite is a medium- to coarse-grained, white, banded rock in which calcite is the dominant carbonate species and it includes accessory minerals such as phlogopite, magnetite, clinohumite, apatite, olivine, pyrrhotite, and amphibole. Apatite can reach 15% abundance in this rock type (Sage, 1988). In sharp contrast to the sovite, the rauhaugite appears as a massive, fine-grained, dense, beige to tan-coloured rock in which dolomite is the dominant carbonate species. Phosphate values can range to 14% P2O5 in the rauhaugite."

"In view of the chronic overcapacity problem in the world potash industry and Saskatchewan's recent emergence as a major producer, the long-term outlook for potash productive capacity and consumption is of importance and interest to both the Saskatchewan Government and the potash industry. This paper is based on a report recently published by the Saskatchewan Department of Mineral Resources on projected world potash productive capacity and consumption for the ten-year period 1970 to 1980. Potash productive capacity and consumption are estimated on a country and regional basis and projected annually to 1980. Tables and graphs are included which summarize projected capacity and consumption for the period and illustrate the impact of Saskatchewan's capacity upon the North American and world potash industries."

"The Precambrian rocks of southeastern Manitoba contain a great variety of mineral deposits, including gold, chromium, copper, nickel, lithium, tin, beryllium, tungsten, and molybdenum. Although considerable interest has been shown from time to time in each of these types of deposit, production to date has been almost entirely in gold. This has had a value of about $26,000,000 and has been derived chiefly from the San Antonio mine, with lesser amounts from the Central Manitoba, Gunnar, Beresford Lake, Ogama-Rockland, Diana, and other properties.Most of the deposits lie within volcanic and sedimentary rocks or within basic intrusions cutting these rocks. These favourable rocks occur in several areas, which have been given local names and are separated from one another by large bodies of granite (Fig. 1).In general, the several areas are characterized by different types of mineralization. Thus, the Rice Lake-Beresford Lake area contains numerous gold deposits and has yielded almost all the gold production to date; the Maskwa River, Euclid Lake, and Oiseau River areas are, on the whole, characterized by deposits of chromium, copper, nickel, lithium, tin, and beryllium; and in the West Hawk Lake area there are deposits of gold, tungsten, molybdenum, and lithium.As might be expected in a district containing such a variety of mineral deposits, the structural conditions controlling their deposition also vary greatly. It is, accordingly, convenient to discuss the structural geology and mineral deposits of each of the more important areas separately."

"This Precious metals content copper scrap is treated with a copper smelting process, and copper and precious metals are recovered. The precious metal lost in the slag is increasing with increasing of treated scrap amount. To determine the portion of the precious metals chemically dissolved and that associated with the mechanically trapped matte in the slag will be a key factor to improve the recovery of those metals. The distribution of precious metals between copper matte and FeOx-SiO2 slag phases is determined at 1300 oC and a fixed partial pressure of SO2 of 0.1 atm for the matte grades from 40 to 70 mass% of copper. The distribution ratios show a tendency to increase when the grade of matte is increased. In addition, the solubility of platinum and rhodium in the FeOx-SiO2-CaO slag under the air and the solubility of platinum in the FeOx-SiO2 slag equilibrated with a pure platinum or the Pt-Cu alloy were determined at 1300oC in the range of oxygen partial pressure from 10-9 to 10-7. The solubility of platinum and rhodium in the slag tends to increase with increasing content of copper in the slag and oxygen partial pressure. INTRODUCTIONThe stringency of the supply and demand of platinum group metal (PGM) intensifies by localization for resources and increase of the demand for PGM, furthermore, smelting and the recycling of PGM in the nonferrous smelting process take an important role. Scrap containing a precious metal for the purpose of collection of PGM is treated by copper smelting recently. With increase of the treatment amounts, loss of PGM in slags is the serious problem.In considering of PGM loss in slags, knowledge of the distribution behavior for PGM between slag and matte phases or slag and copper phases and the PGM solubility in slags is important. The distribution ratios of silver and gold between the FeOx-SiO2 slag and the Fe-Cu matte were reported by Roghani (Roghani et al., 2000), Shinha (Shinha et al., 1985) and Takeda (Takeda et al., 1993) However, there is no data for the PGM distribution ratio. On the other hand, the PGM solubility in slags was reported by Sano (Sano et al., 1997) However, there is very few report for the solubility of PGM in the nonferrous smelting slags."

Arsenic bearing minerals such as enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S13), which may associate with major copper minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), chalcocite (Cu2S) and bomite (Cu2FeS4), usually report to the copper concentrate in conventional flotation due to their similar flotation properties. Arsenic in a copper concentrate causes environmental problems and also problems in the subsequent pyrometallurgical process. Voltammetric studies were carried out to investigate the oxidation characteristics of enargite, tennantite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bomite. Contact angle measurements and micro-flotation tests were conducted to examine the flotation characteristics of enargite and chalcopyrite under controlled pulp potentials. Selective flotation of enargite from chalcopyrite under varied pulp potentials was conducted to investigate the feasibility of arsenic removal from a copper concentrate. The test results indicate that the non-arsenic bearing copper minerals ( chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite) were easier to oxidise than arsenic bearing minerals ( enargite and tennantite) in an alkaline solution. Enargite floated well at a potential as high as +0.45 V vs. SCE while chalcopyrite was completely depressed at a potential higher than +0.43 V vs. SCE. Selective flotation revealed that enargite can be successfully removed from chalcopyrite through controlling the pulp potential at +0.30 ~ +0.50 V vs. SCE.

"IntroductionIndustrial minerals include a group of more than fifty minerals which are marketed into almost all the sectors of industry; they are the backbone of many manufacturing industries. Table I shows major end-uses for industrial minerals in manufacturing sectors.At Energy, Mines and Resources, industrial minerals are divided in three major categories: (I) agro chemicals and chemicals, (2) construction mineral s, and (3) ceramics and specialty minerals. A listing of the major groups of minerals is shown in Table 2.Agro-chemicals and chemicals are sold on the basis of their chemical content and purity. Construction minerals or structural minerals are distinguished by their performance as low cost and bulky commodities. Ceramics and specialty minerals are performance-specific and are sold for their property on imparting functions on end-products. Industrial minerals have unique characteristics that are useful in many stages of processing; from crushed size to micronized fillers a single mineral ca n serve a broad range of industries because of its intrinsic properties.The Industrial Minerals Industry in CanadaCanada has a large industrial minerals base and is a world leader in the production of some of them. The total value of product ion of these minerals has grown by 115% over the last 10 years despite the misfortune of asbestos.Industrial minerals have shown remarkable growth in the past 20 years at an average annual rate of 9.2%, compared to 7.8% for metallic minerals. In 1986, the value of industrial minerals rose to $4.9 billion, or 14% share of the Canadian mineral production. Figure I shows the value of production of the mineral industry for the period 1966-1986.The leading segment in industrial minerals segment since 1976 is the chemicals and agro-chemicals sector which has an average annual growth rate of 5.75 % in terms of value of production. During the same period, the growth rate for the whole Canadian mining industry was 1.37% per annum. The chemicals and agro-chemical s sector increased its contribution to the total value of production of 2% to 6070 despite the growing share of fuel minerals with 59%."

FOR MORE THAN 200 years, the Kochiu district of Yunnan province has been, and it still is, the hub of China's tin industry. The district produces annually from 80 to 90 per cent of that country's out-put of tin, which averages about 9,300 tons a year and places China fifth among the tin producing nations of the world. The tin ore reserves of the country are estimated (1) at 1,873,370 metric tons, of which 1,500,000 tons are in the Kochiu district. The mill of the Yunnan Consolidated Tin Corporation, described in this paper, is the only one of its kind in China. MINING AND SMELTING There are only two tin mines in the Kochiu district operating with modern equipment -the Hsin-Chang and the Lao-Chang, both owned by the Yunnan Consolidated Tin Corporation, a government company. The Hsin-Chang mine has four working levels with cross-cuts 6 ft. by 6 ft. and is equipped with steel mine cars and trucks to haul the ore. The ore is hoisted to surface in a three-compartment shaft and transferred to the mill by a 4-kilometer aerial tram. The Lao-Chang mine has two circular shafts 656 feet apart, each equipped with two cages. Haulage-ways 1,600 meters and 1,000 meters long, respectively, have been driven to the southwest from these shafts and are connected by three cross-cuts.

Total mineral production in Manitoba has averaged C$1 billion over the past ten years. Industrial mineral production has comprised almost 10% of the total, with more than half coming from the aggregate sector. In southeastern Manitoba, tantalum, spodumene and amblygonite concentrates, cesium and rubidium ores, cesium formate, dimension stone and sphagnum peat moss are produced. Gypsum, high-calcium limestone and lime are produced in the Interlake area. Early industrial mineral production consisted of tools and implements, salt and pottery. Historical production has included: salt, building stone, aggregate, lime and dolime, lignite coal, gypsum, natural and Portland cement, calcium bentonite, brick, light-weight aggregate, caustic soda and soda ash, and silica sand. Future industrial mineral production may come from reactivated quarries, pits and wells or from new producers of current commodities. Newproducts may include: stainless steel master alloy, silicon metal, titanium and magnetite, lithium carbonate, float-plate glass and ferrosilicon, "marble" dimension stone, magnesium metal, potash and kaolin.

Coal-bearing Tertiary sediments of the Ravenscrag Formation in southern Saskatchewan host numerous deposits of clinker resulting from in situ coal combustion. Clinker deposits form when sediments of relatively low temperature firing properties overlie coal seams which are undergoing prolonged spontaneous combustion. The resulting fired material is useful for decorative landscaping aggregate, rock gardens, driveways, mud control and others. Predicting the occurrence of clinker deposits requires a knowledge of the spatial distribution of coal seams and the nature ofoverlying sediments. Knowledge ofpaleotopography at the time of coal combustion can assist in locating more highly-fused material which can yield greater block sizes. Coal data bases can be used as a predictive tool by outlining areas where coal is or was at or near surface and therefore may have been susceptible to spontaneous combustion.

The volcanic rocks lie to the north of a belt of Timiskaming sediments.

This article is based on a detailed heat investigation conducted at the Rokana Division of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited while both authors were employed in Zambia. Mindola Mine is one of the three underground mines comprising the Rokana Division on the Copperbelt of Zambia, producing about 270,000 tons of ore per month at 1.9% Cu and 0.14% Co. The total volume of air being circulated by means of five primary fan installations slightly exceeds 1,000 m3/sec at standard density. Sectional bulk cooling is practised where air cooling coils are installed at primary splits some considerable distance from the stoping operations. Total capacity of the refrigeration complex is 10,500 kw (3,500 R. tons), of which about 7,000 kw is available as effective cooling power after losses, but the heat removed from the coifs is about 3,500 kw with 61% over-all plant performance. An extension program is planned for a further five production levels with the re-deepening of a sub-vertical shaft. Thermal heat will become a major problem at increased depth associated with higher rock temperature, higher thermal conductivity of the rock groups encountered and fissure water flowing into working areas through the strata with increased rock temperature. This paper describes the ventilation and refrigeration practices in Mindola Mine, with special reference to future thermal heat problems. These are discussed with a view to mining at depth.

"Mine hoists are built to handle a certain nameplate capacity; they are specified and designed according to the required duty. However, as production capacity increases in other parts of an operation, the hoist capacity can become the critical constraint. Such a situation occurred at Lundin Mining’s Neves-Corvo operation. This paper examines how each component of the existing hoisting system was examined and optimized. Through a combination of engineering study and hoist simulations, the annual hoisting capacity was improved by 24% through increases in payload capacity and available hoisting time combined with a reduction in cycle time, while no changes were made to the hoist motor, drum or headframe. The additional payload capacity was achieved by reducing the mass of the hoist ropes and skips, and improving load monitoring systems. The cycle time was reduced through the shortening of the creep distances and increased availability through the installation of a shaft collar safety platform, alternative guide rope bushes, and superior liners for both the skips and underground measuring flasks. Enhanced cooling of the hoist electrical system was also incorporated to increase hoist availability by reducing downtime during hot summer months. The changes will increase the capacity from the current 4.5 mega tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to a planned 5.6 Mtpa and are being implemented over a 2-year period whilst maintaining the mine production during the upgrade work. INTRODUCTION Neves-Corvo Mine Neves-Corvo is primarily a copper and zinc mine producing copper, zinc and lead concentrates. The operation is owned and operated by Somincor, the Portuguese subsidiary of Lundin Mining. Located in the Alentejo district of southern Portugal, the operation is situated approximately 15 km southeast of the town of Castro Verde, where summer temperatures can reach as high as 45ºC, and approximately 220 km southeast of Lisbon. The principal means of mine access is via a ramp from surface, with the vertical shaft used to hoist ore and waste from the 700 m level, while conveyors descend from the 700 m level to transport ore and waste up from the deeper levels of the mine. The mine is highly mechanized and several different stoping methods are employed, with the most significant being bench-and-fill and drift-and-fill. The Neves-Corvo mine currently exploits five orebodies: Neves, Corvo, Graça, Zambujal and Lombador for copper and zinc-lead ores which are processed in one of two plants. All the orebodies are currently exploited over their full elevation with the exception of Lombador which is only mined down to the 220 m level, approximately the top 50% of the orebody, known as Lombador Phase 1."
