Introduction It is generally conceded by flotation men that the condition at the surface of a particle of mineral or gangue is the most important factor controlling its behaviour in a flotation cell. Much research work has been devoted to the study of the forces that are active at the surface of the particle and of the effect of the surrounding solution upon these forces. Study of the relationship between mineral or gangue particles and gas bubbles indicates that, in the main at least, flotation is a physical phenomenon. The important factor, that of mineral-gas-bubble attachment, is unquestionably physical; however, modifications may be effected by chemical means, whereby the nature either of the surface of the particle or of the surrounding solution may be changed. For example, the coating of lead sulphide that forms on lead-carbonate ore particles when sodium sulphide is added greatly aids the flotation of the carbonate particles. Without going into the question as to why, under certain surface conditions, mineral particles will attach themselves to gas bubbles whereas under other conditions they will remain unaffected, it may be stated that there are three general conditions in a flotation pulp which control the attachment of the particle and the gas bubble.

"In efforts to improve dust control during deep cut continuous mining a supplemental atomizing spray system, mounted on 14CM15 continuous miner, has been designed and successfully implemented in a U.S. coal mine. The mine is 2.1 m (7-ft) high and uses a blowing curtain face ventilation system with 1.1 m (3.5-ft) curtain offset from the rib. The face ventilation design parameters were set to 9.4 m3/s (20,000-cfm); 4.2 m3/s (9,000-cfm) line curtain flow rate, and 3.8 m3/s (8,000-cfm) scrubber capacity. The performed in-mine measurements, before and after the implementation of the atomizing spray system, showed a significant decrease in the respirable dust levels at the operator place as well as at the return. The paper describes the supplemental water spray system design and performance supported by three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and in-mine test data.INTRODUCTIONThe work on this project have started in 2015 with a study of the conventionally applied face ventilation layouts. The specific behaviour of the face ventilation system have been analyzed trough in-mine measurements and computer modeling of typical cut scenarios. An computer modeling methodology have been developed for estimation the respirable dust concentration (RDC) using tracer gas to RDC contour mapping, calibrated by a single point value, provided by in-mine measurement. Utilizing the results of this study the engineering staff of the mine designed and implemented a supplemental atomizing spray system to improve the dust control during the deep cut continuous mining. Today the atomized spray system is successfully applied demonstrating steady performance and a significant decrease in respirable dust concentration on the working places of the continuous miner (CM) and coal transporters (CT) operators as well as at the return air stream. Information about the applied type of spray nozzles provided by other researchers (Cheng, 1973; Dick et al., 1996; Organiscak & Page, 1998; Pollock & Organiscak, 2007) and spray system manufacturers (Spraying System Co, 2011–2018; Steinen Mfg., 2016) have been used in this project. CFD code and simulation approach validated in a study conducted in 2000-2014 have been applied (Turner et al., 2002; Wala et al., 2004, 2007; Petrov, 2014)."

"Recycling polymer based end-of-life materials as carbon resources for a partial replacement of coke/coal can make important contributions towards enhancing the environmental sustainability of steelmaking processes. An in-depth high temperature (1550°C) investigation has been carried on waste CDs/DVDs focussed specifically on char generation, characterization and dissolution into molten iron. The simultaneous presence of carbon and oxygen in polymeric chains on polycarbonate substrates resulted in the generation of a significant pore structure and exposed surfaces. Carbon dissolution studies into molten iron were carried out on the raw polymer as well on chars; high levels of carbon pick-up were observed in both cases after 15 minutes of contact at high temperatures. INTRODUCTIONOver the past sixty years, plastics have played an important part of our daily lives and are being increasingly used in all aspects of the global economy. More than 260 million tons of plastics are produced annually worldwide. Their rapid growth and extensive utilization with a short life span (such as packaging) has created a massive waste problem. Although the waste plastic component in municipal solid waste (MSW) amounts to only about 10 %, plastics have a high volume-to-weight ratio and these are generally not biodegradable. In Australia, ~19.20 % of plastics were recycled in 2009-2010 (PACIA, 2010); with the total consumption being estimated at 1,501,258 tonnes, 288,194 tonnes of plastics were recycled. There are serious environmental concerns with the two key waste management options, i.e. land filling and incineration, and there exists an urgent need for developing alternative recycling approaches. In this paper, we focus our attention on recycling waste CDs/DVDs polycarbonate substrates as a carbon resource in steelmaking.CDs/DVDs used for music/data/image are made from aromatic polycarbonate resin (hereafter abbreviated PC). This resin is also widely used as an engineering plastic in applications such as automobiles, mobile phones, notebook type personal computers, cameras & video cameras, electric & electronic appliances, fire equipment, life & living goods, roofing sheets, etc. High consumption and growth (~10% annually) of PC utilization is attributed to its excellent properties such as outstanding impact resistance, transparency, heat resistance, and dimensional stability. This paper presents a BIM-based Risk Identification Expert System (B-RIES) for metro construction, composed of three main built-in subsystems: BIM extraction, knowledge base management, and risk identification subsystems. The engineering parameter information related to risk factors is extracted from the BIM of a specific project where the IFC standard plays a bridge role between the BIM data and metro construction safety risks. An integrated knowledge base, consisting of fact base, rule base and case base, is established to systematize the fragmented explicit and tacit knowledge. A hybrid inference approach, with case-based reasoning and rule-based reasoning included, is developed to improve the flexibility and comprehensiveness of the system reasoning capacity. During the safety risk identification process, B-RIES is able to improve the inefficiencies in engineering information extraction, reduce the dependence on domain experts, and facilitate knowledge sharing and communication among dispersed clients and domain experts. A typical safety hazard identification in the Mingdu station, located in the Wuhan Metro Line Two, is presented in a case study. The results demonstrate the feasibility of B-RIES, and its application potential. B-RIES can be used as a decision support tool to provide guidelines for safety management in metro construction, and thus increase the likelihood of a successful project in a complex environment.

COMPLETED in November, 1943, at a cost of over $1,500,000, Elk River colliery of the Crow's Nest Pass Coal Company, Limited, has been laid out and equipped for an ultimate annual production of 1,000,000 tons and replaces the recently closed Coal Creek plant, which has been operated by the Company for the past forty-five years. The project has involved the opening of mines in three seams, the construction of a complete set of colliery buildings, including a modern preparation plant of 360 tons per hour capacity, and the laying out of the necessary yard tracks and spur connecting the new development with the Company-owned Morrissey, Fernie and Michel railway, which, in turn, connects with the Canadian Pacific railway at Fernie. The colliery is three and a half miles east of Fernie, B.C., near the southern end of the Crow's Nest coal field, which contains the largest and most important body of coal in the Province of British Columbia. The coal-bearing horizon is the Kootenay formation, present in the form of a syncline covering an area of 230 square miles. Most of the coal seams occur in the lower 2,000 feet of the formation, the covering beds being largely coarse sandstones and conglomerates of great thickness, the presence of which accounts largely for the preservation of the coal measures. James McEvoy, in the report of the Geological Survey of Canada for the year 1900, states that the basin appears to contain a fairly constant coal content of nearly 172 feet in 23 seams of a thickness of one foot or over. Coal has been mined in the Fernie district since 1897 and the first shipments were made from Coal Creek colliery in the following year, over the then newly constructed British Columbia Southern railway. Since that time, a total of over 16,000,000 tons of coal has been produced, an average of 350,000 tons per year. The7ears of peak production were 1910, 1912, and 1913, with an all-time high of 924,000 tons in 1913. The lowest output in the history of Coal Creek was that for the year 1933, when only 60,340 tons were produced, the colliery being closed for some months. Present production from Elk River colliery averages 1,150 tons per day, the output being considerably less than it could be were sufficient man-power available.

"Occupational health programs and their role in improving the quality of working life in the mining industry are discussed. Attention is directed to some problems peculiar to the Canadian mining industry. Factors affecting program development are reviewed, as well as parameters affecting cost-benefit analyses.IntroductionThe quality of working life in the mining industry is a more important consideration than in many other industrial environments because of the very nature of the undertaking. It was a strange paradox of the 1960s that preventive maintenance programs for machinery and equipment were well accepted, whereas the concept of ""preventive people medicine"" was basically ignored. Fortunately, there seems to be a swing toward the development of occupational health programs in many sectors of the business community; however, there is a noticeable lack of consistency and uniformity for thought among the members of the mining industry. The blame for this lack o f progress in the occupational field cannot be entirely attributed to the industry, but must also rest with (for the most part) apathetic and inadequately trained physicians. This latter problem is slowly improving with the growing recognition that a well-planned and executed occupational health program may improve the quality of working life for mining employees and their families.There are a number of factors which relate to occupational health in mining, and its effect on working life quality. Included among these are:1. Community isolation.2. High accident risks.3. Occupational disease risks.4. Production demands and the state of the economy.5. Government regulatory requirements.6. Travel demands.These, and others, reflect on all levels of the mining industry. To examine how these factors can be moderated by an occupational health program, it is necessary to first review the rationale for such a program and some of the costs related to it."

The prospect of obtaining high-grade concentrates from Canadian pyrochlore ores is rather unlikely, and experimental beneficiation pro-cesses ?appear to have yielded products in the range of 3 to 20 per cent N'b205? A possible solution of the problem is to find an economical chemical method for recovering high-purity Nb2?05 from such concentrates. A technically feasible but economically unproved process is outlined in this paper, in which the concentrate is decomposed by an acid attack and the oxides of niobium and tantalum are isolated and then separated by liquid-liquid extraction. The solution of the ore is adjusted to 7 M HF-5 M HNO3 and the niobium and tantalum are extracted from this solution with methyl isobutyl ketone. The mixed oxides of niobium and tantalum are recovered from the oxdanic phase and dissolved in 0.5 M HF-1.0 M HNO3. Tantalum is extracted preferentially from this solution with methyl isobutyl ketone, leaving niobium in the aqueous phase. By the use of this process it is possible to produce niobium pentoxide and tantalum pentoxi.de in 99.5 per cent purity with a recovery of approximately 95 'per cent, under lab-oratory conditions.

"Bell Copper is situated (Latitude 55°0''N, Longitude 126°14W) on Newman Peninsula on the east side of Babine Lake at an altitude of 2,450 feet above sea level. The mine site is approximately 170 miles north west of Prince George and 40 miles east of Smithers. Access to the property is by way of 30 miles of paved road to the Village of Granisle on the west shore of Babine Lake and then a further 9 miles of unpaved road to Bell Copper's west dock. The two mile lake crossing is made using a tug and barge. A compressed air bubbler system maintains an ice free channel for the barge during the winter months.Temperatures range from summer maximums of around 32 °C to winter minimums in the region of minus 40°C. Long periods in winter may be spent with temperatures in the range of minus 15""C to minus 28°C. Freezing temperatures usually start in October and last for six months. The lake normally freezes over in mid December and the ice breaks up in mid May. Snow accounts for approximately two t11irds of the annual precipitation of twenty-one inches."

BEFORE going into detail on the subject to be presented, a brief outline of the Company's earl y history would not be out of place. Prospecting and mining on a small scale was started in 1876 on the site of the present open pit at Thetford Mines. The property was purchased from the Crown in 1878 and Johnson's Company was incorporated in 1885. It is owned and operated today by descendants of the original shareholders. Many employees, through their fathers and grandfathers, have service records dating back three generations. The principal asbestos deposit at Thetford Mines is pear-shaped, with surface dimensions of about 2,200 feet in length by 1,300 feet in maximum . width. Its long axis strikes northeast and the dip is nearly vertical, but irregular in detail. It is known to extend to a depth 1,200 feet below the original surface, but its area at that depth has not been determined. Ownership of this deposit is divided among three active Companies: the Asbestos Corporation, Limited; Bell Asbestos Mines, Limited; and John-son's Company. Johnson's Company owns a section about 1,000 feet in length and 500 feet in width, bounded on the northeast by the King mine of the Asbestos Corporation and on the northwest by the Bell pit. On Johnson ground, there was originally a large outcrop o~ asbestos rock which dipped toward the south below overburden. This was mined until recently by open pit, the overburden being stripped off as far southward from the original outcrop as was economically possible. As the. pit was deepened, within side walls maintained at a maximum safe slope, its floor area, of course, became progressively smaller, and eventually the pit would have wedged out against the Bell property line. It became necessary, there-fore, to introduce some other method of mining before production became seriously curtailed by a shrinkage of the pit area.

The acid rock drainage (ARD) buffering capacity of mine waste is governed by its bulk chemical composition and its mineral assemblage. Conventional acid base accounting (ABA) tests can be used to predict short-term buffering, but should be used with caution to model or predict the long-term ARD buffering capacity of mine waste. ABA data for mine waste samples from four different deposit types: an orthosite-hosted magmatic sul?de nickel, dunite-hosted magmatic sul?denickel, porphyry copper-gold, and volcanic-hosted high sul?dation epithermal silver, were compared with whole-rock geochemical and petrographic data obtained from the same samples. Our objective was to devise and test a method of predicting ARD buffering capacity based on bulk chemistry and modal mineralogy. In other words, we developed a quantitative theoretical method for calculating neutralizing potential, relying on easily obtainable and relatively inexpensive whole-rock and sulfur XRF analyses, which could substitute for conventional ABA procedures in situations where these procedures are either too costly or too time consuming. For each deposit type, models were devised that reasonably approximate the net neutralization potential estimated by the ABA data obtained from laboratory tests. Once an appropriate model has been developed and tested, portable X-ray ?uorescence equipment, already used for grade control at many mine sites, could provide the whole-rock and sulfur analyses required to estimate the ARD potential of the waste material. Although this approach is not intended as a substitute for the legally mandated ABA test procedure, it could facilitate the timely and cost-effective management and mitigation of ARD at a mine site.

In September 2009, Newmont began the commissioning of a 3 stage crushing and milling circuit at its Boddington Gold Operation in Western Australia. The Boddington ore has been recognized as one of the hardest and most abrasive ores treated to date and this played a pivotal role in the selection of crushing and HPGR technology for this operation as opposed to the more conventional SABC circuit. This paper will examine the scale up from laboratory to pilot plant and full scale operation of the crushing circuit. There have been many challenges to overcome in the first 18 months of operation; however, the HPGRs have in general met design expectations and performance is expected to improve further with ongoing design changes

Electrospark Deposition (ESD) is a low heat-input, high energy density, micro-welding process. The short pulse duration and high-pulse frequency, in combination with the small amount of material transferred during each pulse, results in the evolution of extremely rapid cooling rates, believed to approach 105-106 °C/s [1]. This rapid solidification event results in the refinement of the microstructure to the nanostructured or amorphous level [2, 3]. Figure 1 displays the resultant microstructure of an Al-17%Si alloy deposited by the ESD process. Furthermore, it was determined that the microstructure of the deposit remained unchanged after subsequent layers were welded onto the presented layer. Freeforming of materials is a rapid prototyping process in which the deposited feedstock is built-up to the desired geometry in a near-net shape manner. Figure 2 displays the automated set-up employed produce three dimensional freeformed objects via multiple deposition trials of the ESD process. The automated XYZ table is equipped with CNC software to transform CAD renderings into three dimensional tool paths. Figure 3 displays an Al-12Si freeformed gear (2" diameter, 12 teeth) produced by the ESD process, prior to removal from the substrate. An SEM analysis of the freeformed component showed that the microstructure did not coarsen during the deposition of subsequent layers during the freeforming process, as depicted in Figure 4, resulting in the production of a bulk nanostructured component. This paper represents a summary of the capabilities of ESD to fabricate advanced materials possessing refined microstructure. In particular, results on the microstructural evolution obtainable for various wear-related systems will be presented. In addition, the feasibility of using the ESD process to freeform three-dimensional objects via multiple deposition passes will be presented and accompanied by a characterization of the properties of the freeformed component. SHERRITT GORDON Mines Limited annually produce 300,-000 pounds of pure cobalt by processing a nickel-cobalt-copper-iron sulphide ore which is mined at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. The ore (containing 0.04 per cent Co) is •concentrated to give a concentrate containing l 1-12 per cent nickel, about 2.0 per cent .copper, and 0.25-0.35 per cent cobalt, which is treated at the Refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The concentrate is leached in an ammoniacal solution of ammonium sulphate using compressed air as the oxidant. After filtration the leach solution contains, besides nickel and cobalt, copper ammines, sulpharnates and salts of various thionic acids. The copper is removed by precipitation as sulphide and the sulphur compounds converted to ammonium sulphate by a combined oxidation and hydrolysis treatment. The purified solution •Containing about 45 gpl of nickel and 1 gpl of cobalt is treated with gaseous hydrogen under pressure at 350°F to precipitate metallic nickel powder, the precipitation 'being terminated when the nickel content of the solution is about 0.8-1 gpl. Movement of ore and waste from the Hilton Mines pit is accomplished by truck haulage. With the aim of reducing costs, a study of truck fleet replacement was initiated. The study included on-site short-term tests and longer-term rental purchase agreements for haulage trucks. The operation and maintenance characteristics of different trucks, along with projected haulage conditions, were used to prepare cash flows, from which the most advantageous trucks were selected. The results of the study and implementation of the recommendations gave a cost saving greater than had been estimated. The study also indicated areas where improvements could be made, and resulted in much more attention being paid to road conditions, the training of operators and mechanics, and the development of a practical preventative maintenance scheme.

IN a preliminary paper (1) it was shown that the addition of small quantities of metallic aluminium powder almost completely inhibited the solubility of siliceous material in the beaker. Six rabbits exposed to quartz dust for six months all showed well developed silicosis. Seven rabbits exposed to quartz dust plus 1 per cent metallic aluminium powder for the same period did not develop silicosis. At that time, we were not in a position to state either the manner in which metallic aluminium reduced the solubility of siliceous material, or, from the animal experiments, whether the aluminium was acting locally or systemically, or for what period after the cessation of dusting it would continue to act. This paper reports the further progress of this investigation. CHEMICAL EXPERIMENTATION The technical details pertaining to the various substances used in the experiments are given in an appendix which is on deposit with the American Documentation Institute, Washington, D.C. For lack of space, it is not printed here. The term 'solubility' is used to indicate the concentration of silica in the solution under the conditions as noted, determined colorimetrically (2), and expressed as parts per million (p.p.m.). The term 'reduction in solubility' indicates the difference between the solubility of the .silica in the presence of the aluminium powder and its solubility in the absence of aluminium powder. It will be noted that the solubility figures for different samples of quartz with no added aluminium vary considerably. The figures do not refer to an equilibrium solubility of silica but to the actual amount of silica dissolved from a given sample in a given time at a given temperature. In view of the fact that quartz dissolves extremely slowly, it is evident that the actual figures in any case will depend upon the surface exposed, i.e., fineness of grinding of the different samples.

For many years it has been accepted as axiomatic that the greater number of 'veins' or 'leads' in the gold districts of Nova Scotia are of the 'interbedded' type. The corollary to this hypothesis is that the vein or lead will have a continuous hanging-wall of one kind of rock, and a continuous footwall of the same or another kind of rock; but the essential point is that the foot and hanging walls are, according to this theory, both continuous and of uniform composition throughout; and that the vein or lead conforms to the bedding of the adjacent strata. With regard to the deposition of the gold in the rocks, the probability is that the key of the problem is contained in a statement by E. R. Faribault, of the Geological Survey of Canada: "The combined effect of cleavage, jointing, and stratification is to cause the rocks, especially the quartzites, to break into rhombohedral blocks". It is essential to comprehend that the rocks of the Province are no doubt folded into anticlines and synclines; but also it must be fully realized that the gold deposits and pay-shoots do not depend so much upon these as upon the fractures resulting from the disturbance caused by the intrusion of granite masses, and controlled by the combined effect of cleavage, jointing, and stratification. These fractures would form the channels through which the ore-bearing vapours and solutions would rise, and at the junctions of these fractures, where the fracturing was greatest, the easiest passages would be afforded to the ore carriers, with the result that the ore-shoots would be found at or near the intersections of fractures. It is a significant fact that in at least thirteen different districts throughout the Province, operators have at various times remarked upon the occurrence of rich ore at the intersection of 'leads,' 'veins,' 'beds,' etc.

"Abstract -The Jinqingding gold deposit, situated in the east Jiaodong Peninsula of Shandong province, is typical of the pyrite-quartz vein gold deposits in the Muping-Rushan gold belt of China . The gold deposit is controlled by a great NNE fracture zone and is composed of several lenticular orebodies within the fracture zone occurring in the Kunyushan granite massif. The Kunyushan granite massif was formed by the replacement of the Archean Jiaodong group.The main minerals associated with gold are pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite; the gangue minerals are dominated by quartz, sericite, microcline and calcite. The mineralizing event can be divided into four stages: (1) pyrite-quartz; (2) quartz-pyrite; (3) siderite-polymetallic sulfides; and (4) calcite-quartz. Gold occurs mainly as native gold and electrum in stage 1 and stage II. There are some evident differences between pyrite from major stages of gold mineralization and that from minor stages; these include differences in crystal forms, size and composition of fluid inclusions.Wallrock alterations consist of sericitization, silicification, pyritization and potash-feldspar alteration. Five alteration zones can be distinguished from unaltered granite (zone 0) to vein lodes (zone IV). Au and Ag increase rapidly from zone 0 to zone IV, Cu increases continuously, while Pb and Zn increase slowly. R-type geological factor analysis indicates that the Au, Ag, Cu, Pb and Zn bear a close relationship to wallrock alteration."
