"The SART Process was introduced to the gold mining industry in the late 1990s and several commercial plants were built over the following 10 to 15 years. Most of these plants have operated well and enjoyed plant performance in line with expectations based on the underlying chemistry of the process. However, two of the plants have consistently suffered from high reagent consumption and poor product quality, which has motivated a re-examination of the process fundamentals.The primary product in the SART Process is synthetic chalcocite, Cu2S, and the stoichiometric requirement for sulphide addition is therefore 0.5 moles per mole of copper in solution. It is shown here that when sulphide is added in excess of this amount (generally with the express purpose of lowering residual copper in solution) it not only fails in its intended purpose, but can have a negative impact on the settling and filtration characteristics of the copper sulphide product, as well as the final product quality. Moreover, these problems are exacerbated the higher the selected operating pH in the pH 3 to 5 range, and the longer the residence time of slurry in this pH range.Freshly precipitated copper sulphide compounds are known to be very fine and slimy, with poor settling and filtration characteristics. It is therefore important to engineer the SART Process in such a way as to encourage growth in the average particle size of the precipitate crystals. This was the rationale for recycling a portion of the thickener underflow to the primary reactor when the SART Process was developed. However, the theory of crystallization predicts that compounds of extremely low solubility, such as chalcocite (Cu2S: KSP = 10-48), are unlikely to experience growth in crystal particle size through heterogeneous nucleation and are more likely to grow through aggregation. On this basis, the SART practice of recycling a portion of thickener underflow to the primary reactor in the commercial plants is unlikely to lead to crystal growth via nucleation, and could in fact promote breakage of the aggregates that formed in the thickener. Recycling thickener underflow could therefore have the opposite of the desired outcome. The result of testwork that is reported here lends credence to this theory and questions the wisdom of recycling in the SART process."

At the McIntyre mine, there are two distinct operations: a gold mine with narrow veins, mined by cut-and-fill methods, and a copper mine with large, open, long-hole stopes. The application of the Critical Path Method to scheduling work in the copper mine, where it has been used successfully for several years, is de-scribed briefly. This application is relatively simple. Use of C.P.M. has now been extended to the gold mine. To replace the former method of scheduling from bar-charts, a procedure was developed for scheduling automatically. To handle an operation of this size and complexity, a computer was essential. Improved schedules are now being produced, with a saving in time.

"In 1991, the Canadian Council of Ministers for the Environment (CCME) charged its Waste Management Task Group with developing a nationally coordinated strategy to measure, monitor, and achieve the objective of decreasing the generation of waste (solid and hazardous) by50% from 1988 levels by the year 2000.With the encouragement of the CCME, which viewed hazardous waste as largely an industry problem, a committee, the “Industry Action Group”, representing eleven industry trade associations with a strong interest and involvement in hazardous waste was recruited.The Municipality of Markham, Ontario was also recruited (Appendix 1)."

A DIGHEM survey was flown in the Belford-Montcalm Township area of Ontario in November 1975. This 600-linemile survey resulted in the detection of 134 EM anomalies. The Montcalm Township copper-nickel discovery yielded a single-line anomaly having a conductance of 154 mhos. This anomaly was highly visible because (a) it had the highest conductance in the survey area, (b) it correlated with a 175-gamma thumbprint-shaped magnetic anomaly and (c) it was isolated from long conductive bands. The deposit is a copper-nickel pyrrhotite body which occurs in gabbro and strikes north-south, parallel to the flight lines. The DIGHEM survey was flown north-south, because the exploration program was primarily concerned with locating copper-zinc sulphides in the east-west-striking felsic volcanics. The flight line passed close to the deposit and yielded a 9-ppm anomaly on the chart record. The computer analysis showed that a deposit of exceptionally high conductance (154 mhos) caused the relatively weak (9 ppm) anomaly. The ground follow-up program of magnetics and EM led quickly to the discovery drill hole, which penetrated the orebody in September 1976. Subsequent geophysical surveys consisted of horizontal-loop EM, pulse EM, magnetic and induced polarization surveys over an area of about 8 claims. In addition, a detailed DIGHEM" airborne survey was flown at a line spacing of 100 m to evaluate the entire property of 620 claims. This detailed survey yielded EM conductor maps and contour maps of resistivity, magnetics and enhanced magnetics.

"Coal spontaneous combustion (SponCom) is a natural phenomenon in underground operations, which can either happen naturally or be triggered by human activities. For underground operations, espe-cially in coal, SponCom can happen frequently as a result of air leakage, although its incubation period may vary depends on types of coal and surrounding environment, resulting in uncertainty in control. In China, most of the underground coal operations now use longwall mining method because of its superior safety, high productivity and efficiency. With an increased popularity, there is also an increasing necessity to study spontaneous combustion, its occurrence and management. There have been many theoretical analysis and experimental studies over the past half century hoping to understand the occurrence of coal combustion and its control measures to better understand the occurrence and to design controlling measures to limit the dam-age it causes. In this paper, research on coal spontaneous combustion fundamentals from these three aspects will be reviewed, gaps highlighted and possible directions for future studies. INTRODUCTION The history of anthropic development is the history of human's energy utilization progress. From the first usage of fire, people have been continuingly seeking energy resources on earth. Coal, as an abundant, economic and convenient source of fuel quickly became indispensable and made significant contribution to economic growth worldwide. With technology and societal development, people are becoming more and more coal-dependent, but at the same time, problems of fossil fuel combustion came into sight. In global coal mining industry, spontaneous combustion has now presented one of the most challenging safety issues, it is also believed that it has contributed significantly toward the climate change. It is essential that more effort be invested to examine the cause of SponCom and its control measures. Coal SponCom is a complex process, with both physical and chemical inter-actions among various interrelated factors such as local airflow distribution, ventilation pressure, methane emissions (if any), and physical surroundings underground. With the advent of powerful computers, simulation techniques and af-fordable modelling packages in recent years, significant advances have been made in understanding sponta-neous combustion. But because of the complex nature of combustion and varying underground conditions, there are still areas that need further examining. This paper will focus on illustrating the current research of coal spontaneous combustion and addressing research gaps and future study areas."

THE prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first (1) was published in 1937; the second (2), in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. The present communication records subsequent progress in this field of research. HARMLESSNESS OF ALUMINIUM Animal experiments having served their purpose, it became necessary to consider means to test the discovery on humans. A question for immediate consideration was: Is aluminium harmful to man when inhaled as a fine powder? While the animal experiments were reassuring, since they conclusively showed the powder to be innocuous when breathed by animals, it was, nevertheless, desirable to have additional reassurance with regard to its effect upon human beings. Through the courtesy of the Aluminum Company of America and especially the valued interest in this problem displayed by that Company's Director of Research, Dr. Francis C. Frary, a study was made of the records pertaining to the health of a group of 125 employees who had for many years been engaged in the manufacture of finely powdered, metallic aluminium for the paint and ink industries. The conditions were such that these employees had inhaled varying and oft-times very dense concentrations of this powder daily over periods ranging from 6 to 23 years, the average for the group being 12 years. X-ray pictures of their chests showed no abnormalities attributable to aluminium. Their general health seemed better than that of the 3,000 workers in other sections of the plant. In fact, the early films of three employees in this group of 125 showed shadows suggestive of minimal tuberculosis, which shadows were not discernible in films taken after considerable periods of exposure to aluminium powder. The harmlessness of aluminium was, by this study, reasonably well established at the outset, a finding subsequently verified by Ontario research on humans.

"Cohesive fracture is a mechanical model widely used for modeling quasi-brittle fracture in rocklike materials. This work discusses use of this model to simulate quasi-brittle fractures generated by injection stimulation during the process of cuttings reinjection in West Africa. Cuttings reinjection is an engineering practice used for disposal of drilling waste. During this process, hydraulic fractures are created at the target formation and milled cuttings are injected with fluid. In practice, this process must remain in compliance with environmental regulations and zero-discharge policies. The purpose of this study is to determine the following factors of injection design for a field in West Africa: (1) pumping pressure capacity required to successfully perform the injection and (2) the injection rate for injection performance and the value of fracture width under injection.A simplified three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM) was built. A poroelastic plastic damage model was used for simulation of the cohesive crack prorogation within the target formation. For simplicity, fracture development in both horizontal and vertical directions was simulated separately. In this way, the computational burden for one calculation was reduced to a reasonably low level, without losing accuracy of the model. Loads of the model include fluid injection and gravity, which balances the initial geostress field. Various values of injection rate were used in these calculations to determine the most reasonable value of injection pressure. The capacity of pressure of a pumping device was determined using this optimized value of injection pressure.Results in values of width and length of fractures created by the injection are presented. Injection pressures at bottom-hole (BHP) corresponding to each value of injection rate are also given. Numerical results for fracture generation and propagation in a horizontal direction were visualized. The pumping pressure capacity required to fulfill the cuttings reinjection work was determined based on the numerical results of optimized injection rates and pressure. The fracture width was determined using the given pumping pressure. The length and height of the fractures was determined using pumping pressure along with the required volume of cuttings waste to be disposed of into the formation.This work presents a case study of 3D finite element modeling of hydraulic fracturing generated by cuttings reinjection. The results of the optimized injection rate and pressure provide a best practice and a useful reference for cuttings reinjection analyses in this region."

Introduction The Helen mine and the Victoria mine of Algoma Ore Properties, Limited, in the Michipicoten district, Ontario, are 120 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie, on the north shore of lake Superior. They are on the Algoma Central railway between Hawk Junction and Michipicoten Harbour. Between them, these mines have produced 10,757,113 tons of iron ore. From 1900 to 1918, 2,823,369 gross tons of brown ore was shipped, and from 1939 to the end of 1949, 7,933,744 tons of siderite was produced from the open-pit operations and underground development. The finished product, known as 'Algoma sinter', is shipped to blast furnaces both in Canada and the United States. The iron-ore bodies are a part of a tabular shaped area of iron formation that extends over a length of more than 10,000 feet and has maximum width of 1,000 feet. The two siderite orebodies, known as the Helen and Victoria, are separated by two diabase dykes. The Helen orebody is 1,600 feet long with a maximum width of 250 feet and the Victoria is 1,200 feet long with a width comparable to the Helen. These orebodies are considered to be a replacement of the original rock by iron carbonate. The introduction of the iron-1bearing material probably occurred after the development of the major folded structures. The open-pit mining of siderite started in the Helen ore body in 1939 and continued until 1945. During this period, 3,853,395 tons of ore was mined. Open-pit mining started in the Victoria body in 1946 and is still being carried on. Underground development commenced in September, 1947. Diamond drilling and surface sampling had shown the Helen deposit to average 35.61 per cent Fe and 7.28 per cent SiO2, and the Vi.otoria deposit 33.73 per cent Fe and 10347 per cent SiO2?

"Run-of-mine ore is reduced to 4 per cent on 4 mesh (3/ 16 inch), using four stages of dry crushing. The mill feed is then reduced to 2 per cent on 48 mesh and 60 per cent through 200 mesh, using one stage of ball milling in cyanide solution. During the subsequent treatment about one-tenth of the tonnage is removed as a table concentrate and ground to 77 per cent through 325 mesh. The size of the mill tailing is 66 per cent through 200 mesh.Four stages of ore reduction began when the dry crushing plant at No. 26 Shaft came into operation at a maximum rate of 440 tons an hour on July 31, 1941. A detailed description of the crushing plant was published in C .I .M. Trans., Vol. LVI, 1953.One-stage ball milling in cyanide solution came into full operation on January 11, 1938. The ball milling plant had a capacity of 4800 tons daily when reducing mill feed at 2. 7 per cent on 1/ 4 inch to 54. 3 per cent through 200 mesh. Primary grinding to 60 per cent through 200 mesh commenced May 22, 1945, when the feed was 3 per cent on 4 mesh. Under these conditions the capacity of the ball milling plant is estimated at 4300 tons daily. A description of the 11 Hollinger Crushing and Grinding Plant"" by D. C. McLaren was published in the Canadian Mining Journal, June 1944.The concentrate grinding circuit using a 7 x 15 low discharge ball mill and a 19-foot diameter bowl classifier with a 6-inch centrifugal pump to close the circuit began operating in the ball milling plant on October 24, 1939."

Increasing depths of mining coupled with the mechanization of most underground mining operations have led to growing complexities in the mine environments with the production of large amounts of gaseous and particulate contaminants. Over 100,000 lives have been lost due methane gas and dust explosions in coal mine workings in both the US and Canada since 1900 when the methane concentrations exceeded stipulated levels in some workings. There is therefore the need to constantly assess and evaluate the performance of the existing mine ventilation systems to maintain safe and acceptable mine environmental conditions in workings to meet the requirements of federal, state or provincial laws. This paper uses the results of continuous monitoring of methane concentrations conducted in selected development headings in coal mines in North America to assess the effectiveness of existing auxiliary ventilation systems in the control of methane gas concentrations in the headings. The results show that the average quantities of fresh air required to dilute, disperse and remove methane concentrations within set levels of one minute varied from 5.43 m3/s in Heading #11 (Condition 2) to 27.97 m3/s in Heading #10 (Condition 1) and this represented about 12 to 26% of the quantities required to dilute methane concentrations to safe levels within one minute under Condition 1 and 32 to 139% under Condition 2. The average dilution times in the headings studied were less than 8 minutes. The forcing efficiencies of the auxiliary systems in the headings studied ranged from poor to excellent implying that the auxiliary ventilation systems were capable of controlling the methane concentrations below statutory levels but may not be able to cope with large and unusual methane concentrations in the headings. This study is important to prevent methane gas and coal dust explosions in coal mines and thus avoid any loss of lives and property.

Squirrel cage induction motors are the mostly used motors at present. Currently, the rotors of the squirrel cage induction motors are produced by aluminum die casting technique with the advantages of low cost of rotors. It is well known that the copper’s electrical conductivity is around 40% higher than that of aluminum. If copper is used to replace the current widely used aluminum in rotors, the total loss of motors will be reduced, hence increasing the overall motor efficiency. Copper rotors can be used to produce high efficiency and even super premium efficiency motors without enlarge the motor frame size. Considering the huge quantity of motors, the die casting process is the best solution to produce copper rotor with economic cost. Because of the characteristics of copper, it is difficult to produce copper rotors by casting similar to that done in aluminum rotors. In order to improve the die casting quality of copper rotor, a new tooling structure was developed and the casting process of copper rotor was simulated and analyzed by Any-casting software. The filling process, solidification process, inner gas distribution and residual melt modulus were analyzed. It was found that the design of symmetrical runner and inner runner on both sides was helpful to reduce the impact of molten copper to the cavity surface during the filling process. The use of Slag traps array can reduce die casting defects inside the end rings. That will be helpful to improve the rotor quality. INTRODUCTION Squirrel-cage AC induction motors are most widely used in the world. In 2017, the total installed capacity of AC motors in China has reached more than 1.2 billion kW, and the annual power consumption accounts for about 60% of the total national electricity consumption. To improve the efficiency of squirrel-cage motor will be helpful to energy conservation and environment protection. There are several ways to improve efficiency of induction motors, using copper rotor is one of the most effective solutions. "In this paper, an anisotropic shear behavior of rock joints is investigated under constant normal load condition (CNL). The natural rock joint roughness is transferred to artificial rock samples using room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicon rubber. Artificial cylindrical rock joint samples (90 mm diameter and 50 mm height) are made by mixture of cement, sand, and water in the ratio of 1:1.5:0.45 (by weight). Direct shear tests are conducted on these samples in twelve directions at 30º apart at four different normal stresses (250kPa, 500kPa, 1000kPa, and 1500kPa). Thus, 48 samples are tested in laboratory. Test results shows that the peak shear strength (?) of rock joints is anisotropic in nature due to change in morphological features in particular shearing direction. Joint roughness coefficient (JRC) is determined in each shearing direction by trial and error method using Barton’s model (1973). Further, cohesion ( c) and angle of friction ( ? )of joint surface in each direction is determined. Finally, a relationship between angle of friction ( ? ) and joint roughness coefficient (JRC) is developed. Experimental shear strength and Barton’s shear strength is compared and it is found that effect of anisotropic decreases with increasing normal stress. INTRODUCTIONRock mass is generally composed of discontinuity which refers collectively to joints, faults, bedding plane and folds etc. ISRM (1978) defined joint as a line of break of geological origin along which there is no visible displacement. Joint is three dimensional discontinuity which composed of two matched/mismatched surfaces. The presence of joints in rock mass plays an important role to define its overall shear strength, deformability behavior, in-situ stresses and hydro-geological properties. The shear strength of rock joints is important in the design of near surface/ deep geotechnical works (mining excavation, dam foundation, power plants, underground caverns, and slopes).In last 40 years, many constitutive models are developed to predict shear strength of rock joints under CNL conditions (Patton 1966; Landanyi and Archambault 1969; Barton 1973; Goodman 1976; Barton and Choubey 1977; Plesha 1987; Desai ad Fishman 1991; Amadei and Saeb 1992; Maksimovic 1992; Wibowo et al. 1993; Huang et al. 1993; Amadei et al. 1998; Indraratna 2000; Homand et al. 2001; Wang et. al. 2003; Samadhiya et. al. 2008; Asadollahi and Tonon 2010; Ghazvinian et al. 2012). These constitutive models have limitations to predict shear strength of rock joints in one direction. Till date, among all constitutive models, Barton (1973) model is widely used in practice due its simplicity. It includes parameters such as joint roughness and joint compressive strength (JCS) to quantify joint surfaces."

"Roof bolts are subjected to axial stresses, shear stresses, or both. Axial and shear stresses were compared between roof bolts machined with two and three slots. Shear stresses perpendicular to and at an angle to the shear planes were evaluated by analyzing a three-slot instrumented roof bolt, performing laboratory tests on two- and three-slot roof bolts, and conducting in-situ test analyses. Threeslot bolts appear to provide a complete bending strain profile, requiring no prior knowledge of the estimated shear-plane orientation. Minimum displacements occur in roof bolts installed perpendicular to rather than at an angle to the shear planes.RÉSUMÉ Les boulons d’ancrage dans le toit d’une mine sont sujets à des contraintes axiales, des contraintes de cisaillement ou les deux. On a comparé les contraintes axiales et de cisaillement de boulons d’ancrage usinés avec deux ou trois fentes. Les contraintes de cisaillement perpendiculaires et à angle aux plans de cisaillement ont été évaluées en analysant un boulon d’ancrage de toit à trois fentes, en effectuant des essais en laboratoire sur des boulons d’ancrage de toit à deux et à trois fentes et en effectuant des analyses de tests in situ. Les boulons à trois fentes semblent fournir un profil complet de résistance aux contraintes de flexion, sans avoir besoin de connaître l’orientation estimée du plan de cisaillement. The chemistry and mechanisms of cementation, activated carbon, resins, electrowinning, solvent extraction and pressure reduction are examined. Since milling began in 1909, the PJV Dome mill has been expanded several times, to the current throughput of 11,500 tonnes per day. PJV recovers free gold using crushing and grinding followed by gravity concentration. The remaining gold in the gravity tails is recovered by cyanide leaching followed by Carbon-In -Pulp processing. Prior to 1993, cyanide tailings were impounded in the tailings pond where cyanide was allowed to degrade naturally. Effluent was discharged seasonally during the summer and early autumn to maintain the water balance. In 1993, an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) was designed and constructed for the purpose of removing dissolved metals and suspended solids. In 1997, an INCO SO2/Air cyanide destruction process was added to the ETP. Even though the ETP was successful in meeting the cyanide, metals and total suspended solids (TSS) discharge limits, often the treated effluent failed to pass toxicity tests. Following successful laboratory and plant scale testing, the addition of the chelant EDTA (ethylene diamine-tetra-acetic-acid) was commenced in the 1999 operating season. To date, discharged effluent has passed all toxicity tests. This paper describes the evolution of the ETP from its early conception to the various phases of upgrade needed to meet the MISA discharge limits.

The Cullaton Lake B-Zone gold mine was the first gold producer in the Kaminak Subprovince of the Canadian Shield . Located approximately 650 km north of Thompson. Manitoba, the mine produced 77,783 ounces of gold and 5,564 ounces of sil ver from 251 ,236 tons of ore during 1981-84 period. The depos it is a small , structurally controlled , stratabound orebody in an Archean iron formation. Most gold occurs in sulphide and silicate fac ies. Based on new ev idence, the depos it is interpreted to have fo rmed by remobilization of syngenetic low-grade gold mineralization in the iron fo rmation in a favoura ble fold structure. The concept and methods developed at the mine have been successfull y applied in the discovery of new deposits in the area. One of the concepts. which link Archean and Proterozoic mineralization. may have wider applications in the search fo r gold deposi ts elsewhere in Canada .

"In July 2004 workers at the ABI Smelter in Bécancour (Quebec, Canada) went on strike. Contingency plan were ready to face the situation and plan was done to operate one potline out of three. Two lines were stopped; keeping in mind the restart on cold metal after the strike was over. The subject to be presented and shared includes a summary of work organization including training, schedule of restart, pot cleaning, pot preparation, crash start method, follow up after crash start, safety and environment. This major project has been a very big challenge. It shows that people involvement is a must and the key success. It is then true to say : ""People who believe in success will work and act in order to get there"" and ""People who don't believe in success will act in such a way to fail"" Then both will prove they were right to think their own way ! Sharing such experience can be interesting because it's a true story and people like true stories."

During 1955, Cominco commenced an exploration pro-gram in northern New Brunswick; in the following year, what is now the Wedge mine was discovered. The mineralization is mainly pyrite, with associated chalcopyrite and minor amounts of sphalerite and galena. The property was brought into production at 750 tons per day in early 1962. The ore is trucked 10 miles to the Heath Steele concentrator, where a copper concentrate grading about 19.5 per cent is produced and shipped to the Japanese markets through the port of Dalhousie, New Brunswick. Introduction THE Wedge mine, owned by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited (Cominco), is located in the Newcastle-Bathurst area of New Brunswick. It is 42 miles by road northwest of Newcastle and 37 miles southwest of Bathurst (Figure 1). The mine is located on the north side of the Nipisiquit river in one of the more mountainous areas of the Province, the local relief rising to 1,500 feet above sea level. There is an almost complete forest cover of mixed hardwoods and conifers -the val-leys and hillsides being covered by balsam, spruce and pine, the swamps by cedars and black spruce and the highlands by mixed hardwoods.

"The Casa-Berardi East, Center and West deposits, located in the Archean Abitibi, Sub province, are hosted by volcanic and sedimentary units of varying compositions, less than300 m from the Casa-Berardi fault (CBF). The CBF, a brittle structure, represents an increment in the structural evolution of a regional-scale deformation zone showing ductile-brittle behavior known as the Casa-Berardi deformation zone (CBDZ). The CBDZ is characterized by a mylonitic Sc1 foliation which is folded a.n4 deformed by a later sczfoliation in high strain zones.Four generations of quartz vein and fracture systems have been recognized within the Casa-Berardi deposits. Most economic gold mineralization, occurring in the second generation system, is found within high strain zones. This system hosts three types of mineralized structures: (1) banded quartz veins; (2) swarms of veins and mineralized host rocks; and (3) disseminated sulphides along fractures. An early carbonate hydrothermal alteration zone (pre- to syntectonic) surrounds the deposits. Alteration associated with gold mineralization is contemporaneous to late ( syn- to post-tectonic) relative to the development of progressive deformation in the CBDZ. The geological characteristics and paragenesis of the four quartz vein and fracture systems developed as an integral part of the geodynamic evolution of the Casa-Berardi deformation zone."
