Process-oriented experiments on the use of coal as an adsorbent for certain soluble components of sewage are described. The capacity of Canadian coals for these components was less than 0.1 per cent by weight for the highest concentration at which these components could be expected to be found in domestic sewage. This is much less than values reported in the past. A pronounced selectivity between components was observed. Experiments on bacteria removal in beds of coal, regeneration of spent coal to restore adsorption capacity and COD contributions of coal are reported in the paper. The simple application of coal as an adsorbent does not seem promising.

"Mineral endowment in northern British Columbia and the Yukon Territory was assessed on the basis of geological opinion which was gathered in a quantitative framework of subjective probabilities. The survey area encompassed 364,000 square miles and was divided into 310 cells having dimensions of one degree of longitude by one-half degree of latitude. The response solicited related to tonnage, grade and number of deposits of a particular mineral in each cell. The questionnaire sought an expression of mineral endowment down to mine-able depth as distinct from economic expectations. Details on the questionnaire and responses are presented in a series of contour maps on individual commooities, which illustrate the collective occurrence picture of the respondents. The approach is largely dependent on the cooperation of an adequate number of geologists familiar with the region being examined. This approach to an assessment of the mineral endowment of a region has a wide range of applicability, from the focusing of exploration effort to aiding government and development bodies in the formulation of regional strategies and the planning, for example, of road, rail and power facilities."

"AbstractThis paper discusses the methods of handling air in a large asbestos mill presently being completed at the Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Company in Asbestos, Quebec.The mill, being the largest single asbestos producer in the world and capable of handling over 14,000 tons of ore per day, requires vast quantities of air. A minimum of 2,500.000 c.f.m. is required or about 10 tons of air for each ton of ore milled.Short descriptions of the process and systems requiring this air are given, followed by details of the fans and filters which make up the heart of the mill.This 'draw through' system, located on the top or 12th floor, is an automatically .controlled volume-pressure system creating the required suction to draw .air throughout the mill building and its numerous air systems.The dry mechanical method of milling develops enormous quantities of airborne dust and fibre. A section of this paper is devoted to a description of the multiplicity of dust systems within a system to control, filter, and remove this dust.Finally, the paper describes the method of returning the filtered air to the• working floors or to the outside, with some notes on heat, humidity and dust counts.IntroductionGeneralTHE discussions in this paper deal only with operations where air movement is involved. "Traditional geostatistical modelling methods are difficult to apply to heavy-tailed deposits because the extreme positive skew of the grade distribution leads to bias. The focus here is on an innovative method of modelling the high-grade population by conditionally simulating discrete volumes (nuggets) of gold with marked Poisson and Cox processes. Capping and other ad-hoc manipulation of the assay data is not required; however, an intensity map for the point processes is required. The method is demonstrated on a dataset from an epithermal deposit and demonstrates an improvement in reducing smearing and controlling the skew of the grade distribution.RÉSUMÉ Les méthodes traditionnelles de modélisation géostatistique sont difficiles à appliquer dans des gisements dont la distribution de la teneur est à queue lourde car l’extrême asymétrie positive de la distribution de la teneur génère des biais. "A hybrid methodology is proposed to improve the accuracy of Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) concentrations simulated in a ventilation network model by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). DPM, as a primary concern for underground hard-rock mines, has been studied in two dominant numerical models, ventilation network solvers and computational fluid dynamics. Ventilation network solvers are efficient, but they are not able to provide three-dimensional DPM concentration contours and only accept area-average DPM data as input. CFD simulations are time-consuming, but generating DPM concentration results with high accuracy. Besides, both monitoring points and planes can be created in a CFD model, which can take both point data and area-average DPM data as input. The hybrid methodology is intended to combine the advantages of the two by using the CFD results to update the network model results at key locations. A field study was conducted in a dead-end heading in an underground gold mine in the United States. Real-time DPM monitors were used to collect data. A CFD model and a network model were built for the experiment area. The CFD model was calibrated to the experimental data. In the study presented here, results from a calibrated CFD model are converted to equivalent diesel emission rates in the ventilation network model at a shared outlet. The hybrid methodology is used to provide better input for the network model. INTRODUCTION Mine ventilation system is one of the most important parts for an underground mine. It not only provides fresh air to the personnel but also helps clear the contaminants generated from the diesel-powered equipment. For most underground metal and non-metal mines, diesel particulate matter is the main contaminant. It is also the focus of this paper."

Sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Timiskaming series trend west-ward across the property of the Upper Canada mine, forming part of the north limb of a regional syncline which is truncated on the south by the Larder Lake fault zone. A wide zone of schistosity strikes east-west through the sediments and volcanics. The central portion of this zone is occupied by a system of narrow gouge-filled fractures in highly altered rocks, mainly tuff, trachyte, trachyte porphyry and syenite porphyry. The alteration zones have developed through repeated stages of deformation and accompanying metamorphism. The initial stages were marked by carbonatization and sericitization, followed by silicification and the introduction of minor amounts of sulphide minerals. Gold was finally de-posited in relatively late fractures within silicified zones and pyrite. Repeated movements along the Up-per Canada break have offset post-ore dykes of minette and diabase, and have resulted in minor displacements within the orebodies.

"Abstract - The Boston deposit is a recently discovered Archean lode-gold deposit located approximately 700 km northeast of Yellowknife, in the southern portion of the Hope Bay volcanic belt. Primary H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid inclusions associated with gold mineralization at Boston are of low salinity (4.6 ± 1.4 eq. wt.% NaCl, n = 182) and contain pure CO2. Homogenization temperatures of liquid-phase inclusions average 270° ± 33°C (n = 141), but some fluid inclusion assemblages contain coexisting liquid- and vapor-phase inclusions that homogenize near critical conditions, suggesting phase separation. In these groups, liquid-phase inclusions homogenized at 299° ± 25°C (n = 24), and vapor-phase inclusions homogenized at 338° ± 28°C (n = 18). These temperatures overlap within error, and a median temperature of ~320°C is taken as representative of trapping conditions within the veins. An approximate pressure of 2-3 kbar was estimated from fluid inclusion isochores at this temperature. Stable isotopic compositions of carbonate minerals from the mineralized zones range from -4.7‰ to -3.1‰ in d13C, and from 11.2‰ to 12.8‰ in d18O; quartz ranges from d18O = 12.8‰ to 14.9‰; and pyrite ranges from d34S = 2.1‰ to 3.5‰. The d18OH2O, d13CCO2, and d34SH2S values of the fluid calculated from these minerals at 320°C are 6‰-9‰, -2.4‰ ± 0.6‰, and 1.5‰ ± 0.5‰, respectively, and are intermediate between metamorphic and magmatic compositions. A unique source for the fluids cannot, therefore, be constrained from these data. Petrographic and geochemical data for the Boston deposit are consistent with data from other Archean lode-gold deposits worldwide, implying that the Boston deposit formed in a similar environment and from similar types of fluids. These results suggest that the Hope Bay volcanic belt may represent a major new mesothermal gold belt in this part of Nunavut. "The study of combined depressants for flotation separation of lead from copper has been carried out to solve the copper-lead separation problem. Test results show that the depressant of CMC (Carboxyl Methyl Cellulose) or sodium sulfite plays an important role on the selective depression of galena flotation. When the two reagents above are combined, the selective depression effect on galena is further enhanced. When the mass ratio of CMC to sodium sulfite is 1:4, galena was best depressed, with the lowest lead content in the copper concentrateClosed-circuit tests indicate that under a certain pH value of the slurry, with the best ratio of CMC to sodium sulfite as depressants, the copper concentrate with the grade of 28.23% copper and 4.12% lead is obtained, and the copper recovery is 84.87%; the lead concentrate with 68.12% lead and 0.86% copper is obtained, and the lead recovery reaches to 92.20%. An efficient separation of copper and lead is achieved with the combined depressants. INTRODUCTIONComplex copper-lead-zinc sulfide ore is abundant in China. With the rapid increase of mineral consumption, it has become one of the important sources to produce copper-lead-zinc metals. However, it is difficult to achieve effective separation of copper and lead, due to the complicated ore properties, such as fine dissemination, low copper grade, complex symbiotic relationship and similar floatability of copper and lead.Poisonous reagents of bichromate and cyanide are often used as depressants for copper lead separation. They have good separation efficiency, but pose serious pollution issues. As the environmental protection is becoming more and more important, it is a trend to replace traditional toxic reagents with new nontoxic efficient chemicals. Organic depressant FCLS studied by Liu has strong selectivity against galena, and does not depress chalcopyrite. A new type of galena depressant of CLS-01 discovered by Jin-lin Yang shows good results in the separation a mixed copper and lead concentrate. In addition, dextrin, chitosan and some other natural organic compounds (Drzymala, 2003; Huang, 2012; Qin, 2013) have also been studied to separate copper and lead."

At then end of this year will be 10 years of producing concentrate for Antamina. This is a summary of what occurred over the last decade to increase production and tonnage above the design tonnage of 70,000 tonnes per day, up to an average of 100,018 tonnes per day in 2010, an increase in production of 42.9%. Equipment currently in use is the originally installed equipment, signifying a meaningful increase in capacity without capital. In this paper, the different phases of improvements and the realization of their impacts in chronological order will be outlined. Figure 1 below shows the average daily tonnage processed each year (tonnage throughput each year/calendar days), as well as the percentage increase over the tonnage of design.

Pegmatite dykes containing lithium minerals and beryl occur dose to the borders of intrusive masses of granitic rock in the Winnipeg River area of Manitoba. Both vertical and flat-lying dykes are present. Most of the pegmatites consist of zones, containing characteristic mineral assemblages, arranged more or Jess parallel to the borders of the dykes. Five important lithium minerals are present; each occurs in a separate zone, but all the lithium-bearing zones are situated toward the centres of the pegmatites. Spodumene is the most abundant and widespread of the lithium minerals and occurs as small crystals intimately intergrown with quartz. Beryl is not an important constituent of the lithium pegmatites, but when .present, occurs outside the lithium zones, toward the margins of the -dykes. Beryl is most common in dykes containing few or no lithium minerals. The mineral assemblage in the beryl zone of the lithium dykes is the same as that of the beryl dykes. The attitude and internal structure, particularly zoning, of the pegmatite dykes, and the texture and assemblages of the constituent minerals, have an important bearing on exploration, development, and mining of these pegmatites, and on the extraction of various mineral products from them.

"The Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain deposits are located near Princeton in southern British Columbia. They are owned by Newmont Mining Corporation's wholly owned subsidiary, Similkameen Mining Company Ltd. The property includes the Copper Mountain mine, a former producer. Ore reserves recoverable by open-pit mining are estimated to be 76 million tons containing 0.53% copper. Production commenced during 1972 at a rate in excess of designed capacity (15,000 tpd). All of the known major copper deposits in this area lie in a 14,000- by 3,500-foot belt of Triassic volcanics (Nicola Group) that is situated between a well-defined syenitemonzonite- diorite stock on the south and a variable intrusive complex on the north. The Nicola rocks consist of andesitic tuffs and agglomerates with lesser amounts of flows and some lensy siltstone layers. The orebodies are essentially disseminated sulphide deposits, although fracture-fillings are also important in many areas. Total sulphide content is usually less than 5%. At lngerbelle, and at Pit 2 and most of Pit 1 at Copper Mountain, the sulphides are chalcopyrite-pyrite. In part of Pit 1 and most of the former underground mine they are chalcopyrite-bornite. At lngerbelle the predominant alteration associated with mineralization is a pale greenish-gray bleaching of the dark andesitic rocks. This has been identified as albitization, with lesser amounts of epidote, chlorite, biotite, scapolite and calcite. This bleaching is plentiful at Pit 2, but K-feldspathization is also evident here. These orebodies can better be classified with pyrometasomatic deposits than with typical porphyry coppers. Their relationship to intrusives, the probably extensive metasomatic replacements, the evidence of pneumatolytic activity, the formation and redistribution of magnetite, and the irregular distribution of mineralization are all characteristic of this class. Deep-seated faults probably acted as channelways for mineralization; fracturing, faulting and rock contacts influenced ore localization in detail."

In order to improve the utilization rate of blasthole and blasting effect in vertical shafts, 5 kinds of millisecond blasting model tests with three circle vertical blastholes have been conducted in various delay times with concrete as model material. The blasting effects of millisecond blasting model tests are investigated from cutting volume, cutting depth, and blasting fragmentation, then a reasonable delay time is obtained. In the middle of concrete model, there are 4 blastholes uniformly distributed in the first circle, 6 blastholes uniformly distributed in the second circle, and 10 blastholes uniformly distributed in the third circle. Each blasthole is charged with one millisecond delay electric detonator, and the rest is blocked with stemming. The depth of blastholes in the first and second circle is 180mm, which is 20mm deeper than those in the third circle. After initiation, the blasting cavity is cleaned up, then the cutting volume and cutting depth are measured. Meanwhile, the blasting fragments are gathered and have analysed by function Rosin-Rammler. The test results show that when the inner two circle blastholes initiated simultaneously and the third circle blastholes initiated with millisecond delay, the reasonable delay time is 50 ms. At this time, the cutting volume and cutting depth of blasting model are 3920 cm3 and 68 mm respectively. The fragmentation indexes of blasting fragments, X50 and X80, are 53.2 mm and 74.6 mm respectively. While when all three circle blastholes initiated with millisecond delay, the reasonable delay time is also 50 ms. At this time, the cutting volume and cutting depth of blasting model are 10705 cm3 and 118 mm respectively. The fragmentation indexes of blasting fragments, X50 and X80, are 51.0 mm and 81.7 mm respectively. The researches indicate that for millisecond blasting with multiturn blastholes, the reasonable blasting scheme is multiturn blastholes initiated in millisecond delay and the reasonable delay time is 50 ms.

In the province of Alberta the coal measures dip at so many different angles, between the horizontal and the vertical, that many different systems of haulage are in use. I will, however, only touch briefly upon the general -systems in use, and devote the major portion of this paper to a discussion of endless-rope haulage and its adaptibility to various conditions in coal mines; dealing in particular with the endless-rope haulage that was installed at Brule during the month of August 1923. In coal seams that are approximately level, and newly opened, hand-putting or tramming from the face is the cheapest, but when the mine is further developed tramming is out of the question, and the use of ponies is the next consideration. The time arrives, however, when mining reaches a point where the economical haulage of coal by horses cannot be done profitably, and then some system of mechanical haulage must be installed. The installation of any system should be carefully considered before any particular type of haulage is adopted, because a great deal depends upon the grade or dip of the seam. Motor haulage is impossible to operate profitably on a grade of over 6 per cent and, while it is possible to use ponies, on short runs, up to 9 per cent, some other means of main and secondary haulage must be installed when a 9 per cent grade, is exceeded. I will, therefore, deal first with secondary haulage, because even though a main haulage is established, secondary haulage can be used to feed the main haulage.

"Finance Minister Paul Martin's second budget might be good for Canada's mining industry in the long run, but the budget raises a number of concerns for the industry in the near term. The budget papers suggest that the 25% resource allowance is not working as intended, and report that the Department of Finance will be reviewing this valuable allowance. The so-called ""large corporations tax"" rate will be increased. This annual tax, which is imposed on a corporation's capital even when the corporation is not in production, is particularly harmful to the mining sector.IntroductionThe Honourable Paul Martin, in his second federal budget, emphasized spending cuts and made only modest tax changes. However, two of these tax changes could have a serious impact on the Canadian mining industry: the proposed review of the 25% resource allowance; and, the increase in the large corporations tax rate.Personal Tax Measures Personal Tax Rates UnchangedThe government has been under political pressure not to increase personal tax rates. General Summary THIS paper attempts to describe in a preliminary and general manner the nature of certain copper discoveries now being developed by Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited, in Holland township, in the interior of the Gaspe peninsula. Some copper mineralization appears to have been known here at the time of the earliest French explorations, was rediscovered in 1921, and has been under intermittent development by Noranda Mines since 1938. In the last two years discoveries have enhanced the picture so that the deposit now promises to develop into one of the important Canadian copper producers. As ideas are constantly changing with continuing development, any picture given now is very partial and tentative and must be subject to future revision. The nature of these copper occurrences differs from others known in eastern America. In many respects they have unique features but they are most closely akin to some copper deposits found away from the intrusive rocks in the porphyry copper districts of the western United States. The most important orebodies are replacement deposits in a limestone horizon in which the ore gangue is converted to skarn. These lie at considerable distances from any known intrusive but seem to have been derived from a buried stock of granite that intrudes the sedimentary rocks of Lower Devonian age. This intrusive has produced alteration effects in the overlying rocks that may afford a key to locating other ore areas in the Peninsula.

"Excavation, the principal mining process, 'which hitherto has been based largely on the intuition and logic of mining men, is increasingly receiving the attention of engineers and scientists versed in rock mechanics. The paper intro-duce the principles of this science in simplified form, directed both to underground and open-pit mining. Reference is made to the large annual tonnage from ore and rock excavations, which in 1967 were responsible for 250 million tons of mineral production in Canada.The urge to transform excavation into a continuous instead of an interrupted process is discussed with references to the various types of energies employed or proposed in rock breakage or excavation. Due to the rapid decay of applied energy in the discontinuous and heterogeneous rock environment, large confined blasts proposed for in-situ mining do not give much expectation of success as yet. Raises and ventilating shafts are already bored in reasonably hard rock. Tunnelling machines will be used for drifting and cross-cutting in the future, but continuous mining machines of the cuttmg and shearing type are not 'around the corner' for stoping typical orebodies. On the other hand, bed mining, particularly of coal, has led the way in continuous mining, and Remotely Operated Long-wall Face (ROLF) experiments are progressing in an encouraging way. Some reflections on the mining environment in relation to the human element are made."

Introduction The financial statement of the hypothetical Gold Mining Company, which forms the background of this survey, was designed for the Institute with the express abject of having it assessed in respect to Profits by the several taxing bodies representing the Federal and Provincial Governments, which comprise the Dominion of Canada. On the completion of the figures, copies were sent to the several Ministers of Mines, accompanied by a request that they be submitted to their taxing authorities and assessed accordingly. The response, while it was not general, was very favourable, and at all times we were treated with the utmost courtesy and patience, and what has been set forth in the compilation bears the authentication of the various government officials who are immediately concerned with taxation. The data itself constitutes a fairly comprehensive digest of taxation as it directly applies to gold mining profits in Canada. The Hypothetical Balance-Sheet (See Exhibit A) In the balance-sheet schedules 1 and 2 (Exhibit A), income is divided between taxable and non-taxable classifications, and here it should be noted that the division contemplates only the assessment for Dominion income tax. The same applies to the factors of exchange and depletion. Therefore, in making comparisons, it is to be borne in mind that the set-up for assessment to the Provinces, that is, Manitoba and Alberta, will stand as if the gross non-operating income is taxable, with the reservations as shown in the notes below the schedules.

Uranium minerals are often associated with iron minerals, and during the hydrometallurgical processing of the uranium ores, iron plays several significant roles. The presence of Fe(III) in solution promotes the oxidative acid leaching for the recovery of uranium. The control of the distribution of impurities in milling and refining is also affected by dissolved iron. When rejected from the process streams, iron usually collects other impurities and contributes to the stabilization of the wastes for final disposal. These roles of iron, as they relate to current uranium processing operations, are discussed in detail, and some broad and historical perspectives are also presented.

THIS paper is an endeavour to analyse the ideal and practical functions of government technical mining services, and their relationship to the National Domain, as well as to one another. its spirit is not critical, even though at times it may appear to besoin fact. It is a serious effort to divert a trend in public thought which delights in calling itself practical whereas it is really merely short-sighted. The author refers particularly to the idea that governmental research is a luxury which should be curtailed in the interests of economy, and turned over to private enterprise or the provinces. In order that we obtain the proper perspective of the question, it is advisable to indulge in a little history. In the year 1842, the Geological Survey of Canada was formed under the guidance of William (later Sir William) Edmund Logan. The literature on the founding and history of the Geological Survey of Canada is extensive, and therefore it is unnecessary to go into detail here regarding it. It might be mentioned, however, that the Geological Survey of Canada is only seven years younger than the Geological Survey of Great Britain (founded in 1835), and is only exceeded in age on the American continent by the State Geological Surveys of New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Michigan, which were founded between 1833 and 1836. In 1877, the Geological Survey became a permanent government institution as a branch of the Department of the Interior. It should be noted, however, that the Director of the Survey ranked as a Deputy Minister and reported direct to the Minister. This continued until 1907. In 1886, the Mineral Resources and Statistics Division of the Geological Survey was formed. Some years later, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (then the Canadian Mining Institute), backed by the mining press, began to agitate for the establishment of a Dominion Department of Mines, and in 1907 such a department was founded by the Geology and Mines Act of that year, with a separate Cabinet portfolio for the position of Minister of Mines.

"Microwave induced cracks have the potential to enhance metal recovery from coarse sphalerite particles in heap leaching operations by creating new crack surface areas for lixiviant and enhancing value mineral exposure. The mode of fracture and the extent of mineral exposure due to microwave induced cracks have not yet been investigated. The objective of this study was to determine the extent of particle damage and mineral exposure in microwave treated particles. This was done using X-ray computed tomography (XCT) and image analysis techniques. XCT analysis was conducted on small (–5+4.75 mm), medium (–16+9.5 mm), and large (–25+19 mm) sphalerite ore particles before and after microwave treatment (MT). Geometrical properties, such as volume and surface area of each mineral phase in each particle was determined from the XCT reconstructed images using VGStudioMax image analysis software. These geometrical properties were used to calculate the interfacial areas of sulphide mineral grains in microwave treated particles before and after MT. The ratio of specific interfacial area after MT to specific interfacial area before treatment was used as an indicator of the degree of preferential grain boundary fracture. The results showed significant grain boundary fracture after MT at all sizes. For small sized particles, about 31% of the interfacial area was lost compared to 23 and 16% for medium and large particles, respectively. The results also showed an increase in the degree of mineral grain exposure of 28, 26, and 15% for small, medium, and large particles, respectively, after MT. These results provide experimental evidence supporting improved mineral exposure due to MT. INTRODUCTIONFor some years it has been suggested that microwave treatment (MT) of ores might result in preferential grain boundary fracture that would have benefits such as improved grain exposure and particle weakening. (Kingman, 2006). Most of the experimental work investigating the application of microwaves to mineral processing flow sheets has focused on assessing the benefits of applying microwave technology to flow sheets consisting of size reduction and mechanical flotation cells (Kingman et al., 2004). Experimental studies have shown that coarse crushing during tertiary grinding of microwave treated ore resulted in a better liberated coarser flotation feed (Scott, Bradshaw, & Eksteen, 2008). It has been suggested that improved liberation in milled flotation feed, was due to the presence of grain boundary fracture in microwave treated particles. However, this improvement in coarse particle liberation does not necessarily translate to a significant improvement in downstream flotation recovery (Kobusheshe, 2010). This is as a result of the size limit to the flotation of coarse material, due to detachment forces acting on particle-bubble aggregates, which increase as the particle size increases (Jameson, 2012). Current conventional, mechanically agitated flotation cells are not designed to float coarse material (Jameson, 2012). Hence it has been difficult to show the downstream processing benefits of applying microwaves to ores processed by comminution followed by flotation (Kobusheshe, 2010). It is clear from investigations carried out so far that inappropriate downstream exploitation of microwave treated ore would fail to realise a meaningful process benefit (Kobusheshe, 2010; Ali & Bradshaw, 2011)."
