Conventional processes for disintegration of ores are characterised by low selectivity and cause damage to the components of their structure. It affects their liberation and recovery which are connected also with the inevitable formation of extreme fines. In the world practice recently came into view 4 trend to grinding of materials within a thick layer (in a bed layer), which provides a substantial selectivity of liberation, for example, of kimberlite. The degree of diamond preservation in the final product is highly increased. However, this method causes a considerable overgrinding of material. A new method of intralayer vibro-impulse breaking of materials providing an easily adjusted force acting at the layer and timely removal of product size grains from the grinding chamber has been developed in Russia.

In-pit crushing systems have been known in the mining industry for many decades. The question whether in-pit crushing is a viable option has often been asked. More than 200 mobile and semi mobile crushing systems have been installed worldwide at various locations and applications. Economic pressures have forced mine operators to reconsider the use of a conventional truck-shovel operation and have contributed enormously to the development of in-pit crushing and conveying systems. The in-pit crushing concepts have varying mobility capabilities. These range from fixed, stationary crushing plants to semi-mobile and fully mobile crushing plants. All these systems are operated in connection with a conveying system. In general in-pit crushing systems have technical and economical cost advantages over truck-shovel operation, particularly as mine capacities increase and mines become deeper. The integration of an in-pit crushing system represents a significant up-front capital investment and the mine is only able to depreciate the capital investment over a sufficient mine life including plant capacity to realise the benefit of the much lower operating cost.

The Western Mining Corporation mining lease on the Bendigo Goldfield measures 5krri x 18km with more than 20 anticlinal folds parallelling th long north-south boundaries. Numerous closely spaced shafts and extensive underground workings on the reef lines along the folds flooded with groundwater following the progressive abandonment of the field. Preliminary water sampling and assessment demonstrated that a major dewatering programme and acceptable disposal methods were necessary to dewater interconnected old workings in areas of interest prior to any underground work taking place. A field wide geohydolic investigation was undertaken to establish geohydraulic parameters, groundwater recharge rates and water qualities. Data from the field investigation together with estimates of the volume geometry of the submerged workings as obtained from old mine plans, production history, and limited pump testing results were used with an appropriate analytical model to obtain estimates of water discharge rates required to reach various dewatering targets. Water disposal options were limited by relatively high salinities, arsenic levels, contained hydrogen sulphide, and the mine locations within the urban areas surrounding Bendigo. Direct disposal to the surface drainage system could not be considered, treatment to acceptable discharge standards was not economically feasible, and it was necessary to adopt a strategy of collection, containment, and evaporation.

Over the past 20 years within Australia, there have been a number of incidents at mine sites where ammonium nitrate-based explosives have reacted with certain rock types containing sulfide minerals. These rocks have commonly been referred to as æreactive groundÆ. These reactions have frequently led to fires (particularly in ground susceptible to spontaneous combustion) or premature detonation of the ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Clearly, this introduces an element of risk when using ammonium nitrate-based explosives in these areas. Dyno Nobel has been proactive in developing ammonium nitrate-based explosive products that can be used in these types of æreactive groundÆ environments that minimise the risk of premature detonations occurring. A system for assessing æreactivityÆ of sulfide containing rocks has been developed that can be used in the field. Previous literature has been reviewed, identifying Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) as the most common method for determining the æreactivityÆ of the ground. In the present investigation, DTA has been rejected as a suitable technique for determining ground reactivity, since it measures thermal reactions at higher temperatures over short time periods, conditions that are unlike those in the field. For example, ground at ambient temperature has been found to react with ammonium nitrate-based explosives over long time periods, reactions that are unable to be evaluated using DTA. Other more suitable techniques have been developed to monitor rock conditions that can be measured in the field and give a good indication of potential ground æreactivityÆ with ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Dyno Nobel is currently investigating the reaction mechanisms of spontaneous combustion in reactive ground, the decomposition mechanisms of ammonium nitrate and the role of inhibitors in ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Once complete, this fundamental research will lead to the further development of even lower risk ammonium nitrate-based explosive products for use in æreactive groundsÆ in a variety of mine environments.

The manganese in solution was derived from the weathering of Precambrian manganifer.ous s.edimexsts, None of the deposits are of hydrothermal origin, nor are they related to igneous rocks in any war, other than as ultimate source rocks. There is ho evidence-'t.o.:sugge,st that meta- morphism has been responsible for.the emplacement of any deposit. The tenor of the ore varies'aec'ording'to the quantity of gangue in the orebody and- also to the nature of the part- icular ore minerals. The main ore.mine.rals are the oxides pyrolusite and cryptomelane and the 'o'xide-silicate braunite. The main gangue minerals are hematite, limonite and quartz. The deposits of high grade oreò(-above.45 per cent Mn) range in size from 50 tons to many thousands of tons but most of them are in the 500-5,000-tons r .nge .

Geometallurgy is an emerging, cross-disciplinary field that integrates spatial models of rock properties with time-based outcomes of mining and treatment processes. Geometallurgical variables include any rock property that has a positive or negative effect on the business. Some of the more critical geometallurgical variables include recovery, grindability, throughput, power consumption, mineralogy and content of deleterious materials. These variables drive project costs and revenues in a fundamental way and thus geometallurgy has potential to positively impact on the value of strategic and tactical decisions across many mining organisations. Geometallurgical models, like traditional grade-only models are based on samples collected from the mineralised and non-mineralised regions of the deposit. The nature of some non-grade variables, particularly those that are dependent on the ore treatment processes, requires special consideration during sampling and subsequent spatial modelling. Failing to objectively consider the characteristics of variables may seriously compromise the validity of the sample selection, sample treatment, data models and the subsequent decisions. In addition to addressing the vexed question of collecting an æunbiased and representativeÆ sample, the sampling and modelling approach must consider issues of scale, both geostatistical support and also the relationship between bench-scale data and operational-scale mineral processing performance. This paper proposes a framework (the Primary-Response framework) for the classification of geometallurgical variables. This framework is designed to assist with developing sampling approaches and identifying the most appropriate spatial modelling approach. The proposed framework can also help identify the risks associated with designing, sampling and modelling of both types of geometallurgical variables. The Primary-Response framework divides variables into two categories; primary variables and response variables. How a variable is classified in this framework depends on the degree to which the variable reflects either an intrinsic attribute of the rock (æprimaryÆ) or its response to measurement processes (æresponseÆ). Depending on the classification in this framework, appropriate sampling and modelling decisions can be made to minimise the risk associated with the incorrect treatment of the variable. In particular, the authors argue that for response variables, the approach taken to building spatial models may need to be different to conventional linear averaging approaches (for example kriging).

The Central Coal Mining Research Institute has developed the MAE acoustic emission monitoring system, the BD4-1 portable acoustic emission monitor and the MRB rock burst monitoring system. In the MAE system there is an IBM-PLAT, a receiver and 16 channels and the investigating range is 100 m. The main functions are detecting acoustic events from the working faces, periodically making statistics, prints, displays and storing of the results, and performing the off-line process such as drawing the curves of acoustic activity. The BD4-1 instrument has four channels, it works for more than 24 hours continuously, and keeps the data for more than 30 days after power tum-off. The BD4-1 is suited to the monitoring for a long or a short time as a fixed point where the system is invalid, especially to the monitoring of the acoustic activity promoted by the blasting. There is an IBM-PC/AT, a receiver and 16 channels spread 10 km in the system MRB. The system could on-line collect microseismic events throughout the whole mine, calculate the source location and the energy, and off-line draw the seismic activity draft of time-based or distribution in space. In practice, the forecasting is successful by using the acoustic emission and microseismic monitoring system and the portable instrument.

Past experience has shown that the automation of the dragline swing motion requires real time monitoring of the bucket position. A current project at the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) is aiming to achieve this using machine vision. The hardware platform is a Datacube MaxVideo 200 system. The images are obtained by a fixed camera installed on the dragline boom. The field of view is large enough to include the bucket in all possible configurations. Standard chain coding and run-length coding algorithms are used to process the video image. The three-dimensional bucket position is calculated by combining the output of the machine vision system with the rope length data obtained from transducers installed on drag and hoist drums. This information is then fed into a control computer which takes corrective action to suppress bucket oscillations before they reach dangerous levels.

Industry has a very special request to make. Environmental issues must not be allowed to become a factor of competition so that nations or individual industries can gain economic advantages for themselves by encroaching unduly upon the environment. An international harmonisation of the demands imposed on specific industries and industrial plants where discharges are concerned is therefore essential. The same applies to any to any action contemplated against noxious products. An important step towards that goal is no doubt represented by the United Nations Conference on the Environment scheduled for 1972. Conclusions: Australia must recognise its responsibilities in an inter- national movement to control pollution. It must react on a national scale to a problem which is threatening our whole national environment. To gather, collate and coordinate the information needed to ensure policies which strike a balance between conservation and development, we must look towards the Commonwealth to coordinate the activities of its own instrumentalities and those State and independent bodies working in the area. Financial aid must be provided to stimulate research and later to ensure that environmental protection policies are observed. These policies will be founded on social economic theories which will be both practical and sound, The United Nations conference on the Environment is scheduled for 1972 and in this is the opportunity for international cooperation. Cooperation in the field of controlling legislation and the collection of much needed data. There is an imperative need to assemble facts for world use - an international know-how bank which acquires the most sophisticated technology of process design and waste purification. Arising out of this Conference, is it too much to expect that there could be established an international authority for environmental control, whose activities are governed on a multi-national basis? Such an organisation would have as its primary concern the collection and classification of official regulations, as well as the sheer collation of data to permit economic evaluation of the costs of conservation of the environment. There is an international scope with different factors involved, including industrial technology: in other words, the concrete measures taken against industrial pollutants ought to be more or less identical for similar industries irrespectives of the countries in which they operate. The assembling of an international common foundation of knowledge is imperative so as to acquire the most sophisticated technology of process design and waste purification available for all who are interested.

The story of the rise, progress, and development of our modern railway system is a long but an exceedingly interesting one. The phases it has passed through, the discussions that have arisen from time to time on the most economic modes of construction and working, and the final result these various discussions have led to, are full of importance and interest to the engineer. It is not my intention to deal historically with the subject. I desire simply to speak to the requirements of the hour in Australia. It will not be disputed, I think, that these colonies have reached a point in railway construction and management when, if additional lines to any extent are still to be built, a different principle must be adopted. There are yet large tracts and areas of country to be tapped by the rail and the locomotive, which for years to come must remain untouched if the same expensive gauges and modes of construction are continued. We have yet to see clearly the necessity of introducing a system of light lines that will pay their own way and at the same time augment the traffic of our main lines. This question really no longer remains an unsolved problem. It lies, in a few words, in the acceptance of the, narrowest gauge and the simplest mode of construction that can constitute a pacticable railway. I fear it is hopeless to suggest that private companies should be legally permitted to construct such lines. It seems as if it were next to impossible to move official authorities to enter upon the construction of lines on this principle. It is, all the same an undoubted fact that if private companies could obtain Acts of Parliament, that in several of the colonies a new impetus would be given to railway construction.I may point out that not only has the principle of narrow gauge light railways been adopted in India but private companies are obtaining power to build them. Outside of :England many narrow gauge lines have been made, and in France, Denmark, Italy, and Sweden they have been highly successful.

Gold Fields Ghana Ltd (GF Ghana) currently operates an underground mine at Tarkwa, in south--west Ghana. The mine was operated by Tarkwa Goldfields Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the State Gold Mining Corporation of Ghana (SGMC). The mine was making operating losses and in a poor state of repair. Tarkwa Goldfields retrenched all the staff and GF Ghana assumed management responsibility for its own account on I July 1993.

A numerical groundwater model was used to predict the nature of interactions between heavy mineral sands mining operations and the groundwater regime at North Stradbroke Island, Southeast Queensland. North Stradbroke Island is formed mainly of massive vegetated Cainozoic aged dune sands. Since the 1950s, a number of operations have mined rutile, zircon and ilmenite on North Stradbroke Island. In such mining operations, a dredge and an associated processing plant are floated in a pond either above or below the prime groundwater table The numerical model was based on the North Stradbroke Island Groundwater Management Model, developed in 2001 by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (NR&M). This model was constructed using the modular, cell-centred, finite-difference groundwater flow model, MODFLOW, developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The NR&M model was refined to improve model resolution and detail for simulating dredge mine paths. Of particular interest were: water table fluctuations induced by mining for the identification of slope stability risk; the optimisation of sand spear arrays supplying mine make-up water requirements; inflow and outflow rates to the dredge pond for overall mine water balance; and interactions with Eighteen Mile Swamp and water supply bores controlled by the Redland Shire Council (RSC). Depending on the water level in the dredge pond compared with the surrounding groundwater table, water either flows out of the dredge pond into the groundwater regime or from the groundwater system into the dredge pond. The MODFLOW river package (RIV) was utilised for the modelling study. Dredge pond movement was simulated using specialised software developed by Watermark Numerical Computing (WNC) to interpolate pond positions and map the dredge path to the model grid both spatially and temporally. As tailings placement affects the groundwater system through increased recharge, the MODFLOW recharge package (RCH) was utilised to simulate different recharge efficiencies. Long-term model predictions were made for the period from July 2002 to May 2021. Results of the modelling showed that exchanges of flow between mining operations and the groundwater regime could be effectively managed. The study provided valuable information which was used to develop an appropriate mine water management plan.

Complex sulphide ores are characterised by complex texture of the valuable minerals. Any assessment of the performance of differential flotation circuits treating such ore should include analysis of the effects of poor liberation of the valuable minerals. Selected samples were taken from balanced size by size surveys of the flotation section of a concentrator treating an ore body containing fine grained galena and sphalerite in a matrix of iron sulphides which is mostly pyrite. liberation measurements were made using the QEM*SEM system on four or seven size fractions. The measurements indicated that less than 40 per cent of the galena and less than 60 per cent of the sphalerite in the flotation feed was liberated. The final concentrates were largely composed of composites of valuable minerals and iron sulphide however there was a small but significant fraction of liberated iron sulphide. Using the sized mineral flows obtained from the original balances and the liberation measurements, a satisfactory liberation balance was obtained. This enabled the effect of liberation on the flotation performance to be examined; not only for the entire circuit but also in the rougher, scavenger and cleaning sections. In the zinc circuit the effect of a regrind mill could be assessed. Recovery of galena in the lead circuit was limited by the recovery of composite lead particles. Recovery of liberated galena exceeded 95 per cent in all size fractions while the recovery of composite galena exceeded 85 per cent below 38 ¦m but fell sharply above 38 ¦m. Examination of the behaviour of the liberated and composite galena in the various sections of the lead flotation circuit revealed high recoveries of both liberated and composite galena particles in the roughing and scavenging sections but very low recoveries in the final two cleaning stages. Similar trends to those observed in the lead circuit applied in the zinc circuit although the performance of the liberated sphalerite also fell off at sizes greater than 38 pm in this case. Thus the zinc recovery was limited by the flotation of both the liberated and the composite sphalerite. The effect of regrinding was to increase the recovery of sphalerite mainly by reducing the amounts of sphalerite in less liberated sizes rather than by increasing the liberation of the sphalerite within a given size Fraction.

After a methane explosion in a coal mine a pre-determined crisis management procedure is instigated. As the process rapidly evolves the inevitable question arises - are personnel trapped underground, are they alive and can they be rescued without putting the lives of the rescue crew at risk? This is a very emotive question with many sub-questions such as; could anybody have survived, is there the potential for a secondary explosion and is there a `window of opportunity' before that secondary explosion occurs?To determine if that window of opportunity exists two fundamental elements must be in place; a method of determining the atmosphere at key points in the mine and a method of predicting the course of change of that atmosphere with respect to time. The first element can be achieved if the tube bundle system is intact and drawing samples from known points, alternatively boreholes can be drilled from the surface. The second element can be realised by utilising a sequence of computer generated control charts which have a time axis, a percentage combustibles axis, the upper and lower explosive limits of the current atmosphere and a prediction option which allows the user to look at the potential changes in the atmosphere over a set period of time. These control charts would be part of the mines on-going crisis management system rather than a tool to be used after an explosion had occurred.

Polished discs of a complex sulphide ore were leached with three lixiviants; a mixed culture of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans, Thiobacillus ferrooxidanalone, and ferric sulphate. At either one or two week intervals the discs were examined by scanning electron microscopy, and the amount of soluble metals released from the discs were determined. The mixed culture solubilized more Cu, Zn and Pb than did either ferric sulphate or T. ferrooxidans alone. However, no differ-ences were observed between the three treat-ments by scanning electron microscopy during the first 44 weeks. The minerals were attacked in the following order: pyrrhotite, cubanite, sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite.

The future of human exploration in space is intimately bound to the future of mining and energy production on Earth. By 2025, one or more manned bases will probably exist on the Moon, exploring the lunar landscape and geology, and acting as a learning platform, and possibly a resource platform, for expeditions to Mars and beyond. Unless the mining and space industries take an active and cooperative interest in the technologies required to exploit minerals and fuels in and from hostile environments, the necessary advances to support permanent extraterrestrial exploration will not be ready in time. With the notable exception of using lunar Helium-3 as a fusion power fuel, no other reason has been identified for the mining industry to take any direct interest in the exploitation of extraterrestrial resources for the benefit of its customers on Earth. Ample reasons exist, however, for the industry to take a direct interest in supporting technological development of the extraterrestrial resources necessary to support the economical exploration of space. The mining industry has critical experience in the development and application of technologies for the discovery, extraction and processing of natural resources; experience that the space industry will need to create a viable permanent presence in space. The industry also understands the end to end process of resource development and utilisation. On the other hand, the space industry can directly benefit the mining sector by helping mature and advance the extractive and processing technologies needed to economically and sustainably develop resources in hostile terrestrial environments, such as those available in low concentrations, at extreme depth and/or inconvenient geographic locations. We propose that strategic partnerships be created between the mining, space and allied industries and research organisations. Such partnerships would develop a joint capability for mutual benefit, targeting the most significant advances in the least time. The space industry will learn how to exploit essential resources off-planet, and the mining industry will gain access to technologies to help extend their activities on earth.

The Hodgkinson and Broken River Provinces form the northern part of the Tasman Orogen. They are separated by a broad belt of Late Palaeozoic igneous rocks, but were probably originally continuous. They are bounded to the west by a system of major faults (Fig. 1) which separate them from the Georgetown Province. Although largely Precambrian, the Georgetown Province includes probable Siluro- Devonian granitoids, and in the south adjacent to the Broken River Province, metamorphosed Early Palaeozoic(?) volcanics and sediments of the Greenvale Subprovince. South of the Broken River Province, the Lolworth-Ravenswood Province includes probable Precambrian rocks, Cambro-Ordovician volcanics and sediments, and voluminous Ordovician to Early Devonian granitoids. The first systematic studies of the provinces were the 1:250 000 scale mapping programs by the Bureau of Mineral Resources and Geological Survey of Queensland (White, 1965; de Keyser and Lucas, 1968). These and subsequent regional studies were reviewed by Arnold and Fawckner (1980). Remapping by the Geological Survey of Queensland since 1982, and a concurrent regional study of the deformation by Hammond (1986) have provided much new data. Fundamentally, the development of a minerals processing project is a very risky enterprise. Most mining companies do not have sufficient financial resources to undertake significant projects and hence have to undertake external financing. Indeed, most resource companies understand the high risks associated in developing their projects and therefore, wish others to share in the risks. Most merchant banks, on the other hand, are searching to find suitable resource development projects in which they can share their risk and also share a large proportion of the ærewardÆ. To resolve this issue a Feasibility Study is completed by the project developer and assessed by the merchant bank often with the assistance of an æIndependent EngineerÆ (IE) who assesses the validity of the development proposal. Generally speaking, unless the Feasibility Study has been prepared improperly, the technical aspects of most mineral projects are reasonable. Some of the more recent so-called æhigh techÆ projects are exceptions but these still do not present major technical mistakes or misconceptions. p> In most cases, the major criticism the IE presents after discussing the validity of the ore reserves focuses on production plans, capital costs and operating costs. Of these three parameters the production plan is one in which owners tend to be far too optimistic and financiers, until recent years, have not taken a position. The most critical part of the development plan is the ability of the project, as designed, to attain the required design performance and, even more critically, the ability of the owner to reach and sustain this level of production. In short, how long should the æramp-upÆ be planned to take? Financiers have become more circumspect and are now taking a more conservative view of new project performance by factoring into their project financial analysis longer periods of ramp-up, higher capital costs and higher operating costs. However, these financiers can also be part of the æproblemÆ if they become overly conservative. This paper attempts, by way of case studies available from the public arena, to identify the pitfalls the project owners can meet and possible means of avoiding the disastrous financial conundrum whereby the second or third æownerÆ is the company that reaps the rewards initially extrapolated. The paper briefly discusses this problem by referring to projects known to the author and including previous studies that looked at this very problem. It is emphasised that many of the opinions stated within the paper are strictly those of the author and could be subject of much debate.

The Telfer Gold Mine, owned and operated by Newcrest Mining and located in Western Australia, is currently being expanded. A new underground sublevel cave development is proposed along with an appreciable expansion of the open pit. The Telfer area is generally subject to low rainfall, however, during the wet season cyclonic events can result in sizable rain events, which have the potential to cause substantial inflow. In addition to this, during the first five years (nominal) of the mineÆs life, there is the potential for drainage paths between the pit and the underground mine via decommissioned underground workings which lie directly under the pit. After this initial five year period the pit floor will be mined out below the old workings and will therefore no longer connect to the underground, however cave breakthrough to the surface may start to occur thus providing another water path into the underground mine. To arrive at an optimum, safe solution for dewatering the mine that successfully addressed the above items, a rigorous risk analysis was included as an integral part of the design process. This involved the determination of the probability of events occurring and the consequences of these occurrences. This was compared against the cost of mitigation for the various events. This paper outlines the process by which a safe concept addressing all the issues relating to dewatering the proposed mine has been arrived at. This process included: Establishing the pit catchment areas. These were based on historical run-off data and took into account practical mitigation works. Establishing an Average Recurrence Interval (ARI) based on reference material and historical rainfall data. Utilising a standard approach based on Australian Rainfall and Run-off (ARR) to calculate pumping and storage requirements for the various catchments. Analysing the 20 years of recorded rainfall in the Telfer area to establish the duration, magnitude and sequence of events. This analysis assisted in determining the surface run-off coefficient. Establishing potential water storage areas and determining the risks associated with using particular storage options. Establishing the percolation rate through the cave zone. A degree of uncertainty regarding the percolation rate in the cave zone required that the consequences of using various percolation rates were considered to aid in establishing the rate which was adopted. Establishing preliminary concepts and determining the most economically viable concept. Conducting a risk assessment based on the principles outlined by Australian Rainfall and Run-off (ARR) to confirm that the appropriate Average Recurrence Interval (ARI) had been selected. The Electricity Commission of New South Wales is the largest single user of coal in the State, burning some 8.5 million tonnes during 1972-73. This coal is converted in power stations into electrical energy which is then distributed throughout the State and supplies the electricity requirements of 99% of users in New South Wales. Barring any major change in energy consumption growth, or change in the current mode of power generation, the consumption of coal by the Commission is estimated to have a doubling period of from 10 to 14 years. Coal is used to generate up to 87% of the electrical energy sold, the balance being obtained from hydro gen- eration, mainly in the Snowy Mountains, and, to a much smaller extent, from diesel generation at Broken Hill. A very large proportion of this coal is consumed in pulverised fuel boilers in the Commission's power stations, located mainly on the various coalfields of New South Wales. Coal supplies are drawn from a large number of mines, some owned or controlled by the Commission, others being owned by public companies. The coals used, originate from at least ten different seams located in the northern, western and southern coalfields of New South Wales, and therefore have a wide variety of properties and characteristics. To ensure an adequate fuel supply well into the future, the Commission is continuously engaged in coal prospecting in various areas. Bore data is used in assessing coal reserves and is also the basis of economic studies for their possible future exploitation. The numerous coal cores obtained during drilling operations are carefully tested and analysed in order to assess their suitability for power generation purposes, and to provide data for the design and operation of boiler plant using these coals. In existing power stations coal deliveries are systematically sampled and tested for quality control, for pay- ment of purchases based upon certain quality parameters and to check for any possible plant operating or main- tenance problems that might arise from the use of the particular coals. Almost all the properties of coal that may be necessary in the Commission's work are obtained using standard testing procedures carried out by the Commission's chemists, in laboratories located at the various power stations or at its Central Laboratories in Pyrmont. Where specialised analysis or testing is required, this is ordinarily undertaken on a commercial basis by outside bodies, expert in the particular field. The significance of the various properties of the coal for use in p.f. boilers is outlined and related to their proper application to boiler plant design and to plant operation.
