Geological structure is one of the main controls on ground conditions within mining. It has a significant impact on the mining conditions and productivity of coal mines within the Sydney - Bowen Basin. The three main types of faults common to this region, normal, reverse and strike-slip systems, each present distinct challenges to mining. These systems effect a wide range of geotechnical and mining conditions within the mines. These include coal quality, strata stability, goat and caving behaviour, productivity and maintenance schedules of mining equipment, mine design and mine-site stress fields. A better understanding of the regional, local and mine-scale structural setting, timing relationships of structural events and the mechanisms of fault formation will greatly aid industry's push for greater productivity and competitiveness.

The patented "Epytensic" pump of Minnovation Ltd, a multiple piston pump, is used widely on shearer loaders and by partial high pressure watcr jet cutting strategically in relation to cutter picks not only improves cutting rates, but saves power and increases the life of gearboxes and picks, as well as improving dust suppression. The "Face Side Pump", also a piston pump, located on the ranging arm gearhead has advantages over gateroad pumps and shearer body pumps. The "Extraction Drum", hydraulic air mover system, linked with the above innovations and high pressure water, have further advantages in methane and dust removal. Some modifications providing these systems need workshop applications but most are possible underground with minimal changes to shearer profiles and advantages of minimising hosing, along with the other advantages stated.

Open pit mining began in 1978 at the Woodlawn base metals deposit. For its ten years as an open pit the mine was financially unsuccessful as a combined result of difficult metallurgy and industrial unrest. In 1985 CRA bought out two American joint venturers with a view to going underground and a prerequisite to expending capital on developing an underground operation was to improve the industrial climate, work practices and mining methods.Following feasibility work, continuous production from the underground mine began in 1986 using mechanised cut and fill methods and a workforce trained under a multiskilling program. Men with no previous underground experience were trained by supervisors with backgrounds as miners to undertake all the work that is required with increases in skill levels being rewarded with increases in pay.

This paper presents a new idea in field data collection for geological and scientific data. The computer keyboard has been replaced by a barcode wand driving a spreadsheet style editor. To use the full capabilities of computer hardware currently available, geotechnical and geological data can be entered and validated in the field, in a structured format, for later transfer into modem geological modelling databases. An example, using a geotechnical borehole log, explains the principles discussed. The generic nature of the Datcol system is illustrated by the application developed using the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute Rock Mass Classification system. A brief description of a modem spatial relational database is also given with particular reference to underground engineering.

The need to solve the problems associated with spontaneous combustion, system of ventil- ation and methane drainage in gassy coal mines has brought about the development of mining and degassing methods which has made possible up to 80% gas recovery in retreating longwalls. Beneficial results also were obtained mostly in the double or multiple-entry systems, but for single-entry systems and for a seam thickness exceeding 3 m, gas recovery rate is still very low. With some single-heading systems, such as those where a return roadway is not maintained in the goaf behind the face line, a new methane drainage technology is practiced. Attempts were made to extract methane from roof holes drilled from offsets in the ribside of the longwall block. The inclinations and lengths of the boreholes were planned and designed on the basis of the geological and mining condit- ions encountered at the time and every second hole was terminated precisely at the point where the previous hole intersected the immed- iate roof goaf area above the face. There are mathematical relations approp- riate to the design of the above drainage systems to give optimum methane recovery under the given conditions. Some examples of drainage have reached 87% recovery and have attained 94% CH4 purity.

Dragline operations have played a major and successful role in coal mining around the world for more than 30 years. Because of this long history, many of the operating draglines are reaching an age where maintenance and downtime costs are prohibitive, and decisions need to be made to either replace or refurbish them.In the current economic climate, refurbishment is a popular choice and this usually involves major structural repairs above and below the roller circle, together with replacement of the roller circle components. Often, the dragline tub is also replaced by a completely new one.

The variation in coal properties and the coal seam reduced level can be analysed using partial trend-surface analysis techniques. For the area studied seam reduced level and seam thickness data from the Bulli Coal yield trend-surfaces with a high coefficient of determination, since they have relatively small systematic local and random components in their overall variation. Sulphur content appears to have no significant re.gi_onal trend, and phosphorus content has a very weak regional trend. Other analytical variables have regional trends which are of intermediate strength. The strike-directions of.the statistically significant first degree! trend-surface are similar, sug-gesting.: that the variation of the several coal properties was controlled by a set of- related causes. Paddington processing plant is located approximately 30 km north of Kalgoorlie on the Menzies Highway and is owned by Placer Dome Asia Pacific. First mining was from the Paddington Pit, but in subsequent years the plant has had a history of treating ores from a large number of sources, and has used several different methods to reconcile mining and mill production. Reconciliations are necessary to keep a check on the quality control of mining and grade control processÆs. There is a need to be able to identify and resolve issues that will affect the profitability of the organisation quickly. They are also used to check the quality of the resource/reserve statements, and allow the accurate and timely payment of royalties to stakeholders. During the formation of the Kalgoorlie West operations when Delta Gold Limited and Goldfields Limited merged in 2001, the complexity of reconciliations increased dramatically. The expansion of the scope of reconciliations to include two mills, four underground mines and seven open pits, and ore from one deposit to both mills meant that a revised strategy was essential. A variety of issues have arisen over the years with discrepancies occurring when reconciling both tonnes and grade. There are many ways to approach reconciliations, and in recent times these philosophies have been widely debated on site. A consistent and logical approach that takes into account many different sources of ore, as well as different methods of delivery to the Run of Mine stockpiles is therefore necessary. This would standardise the different approaches taken by the various operations that combined to form Kalgoorlie west. The new method reconciles mill production back to the individual ore sources, and produces reconciled-mined tonnes and grade based on the mill throughput and the change in stockpiles. There will generally be a small discrepancy between the claimed mined tonnes produced (and grades) and the mill production. This needs to be highlighted to the operations concerned if it considered unacceptably large. Paddington mill over the last few years has had up to ten sources of ore each year, and up to 15 different stockpiles being processed during each month from those various pits. This combined with the need for a blended oxide/fresh feed, whilst striving to deliver a consistent (grade and hardness) product to the mill, has meant that reconciliations have been very difficult.

Recent developments in engine, transmission and control technology, likely to give rise to improved performance and efficiency of underground mobile equipment, are reviewed. Turbocharging and the electronic control of fuel pumps and injectors can improve diesel engine performance whilst minimizing exhaust emissions. Ceramic materials promise further improvements in engine efficiency. Nevertheless, electrically powered machines, equipped with trailing cables or 'travelling plugs' are expected to find increasing application where there is less need for flexibility and where the cost of ventilation and heating or cooling makes diesel engines unattractive. Voltage to frequency converters and induction motors appear to have a future in mains powered machines. Vehicles employing energy storage in the form of batteries or flywheels will find increasing application, but it is expected that they will remain a minority until there is a significant break-through in battery technology. Hydrostatic transmissions having high power density and efficiency are likely to be used more widely. Electronic control systems are likely to be used to simplify jobs and to improve performance and productivity. Enhancement of remote control systems is to be expected for work in unsafe areas, but true robot operation is considered unlikely for the moment. Attention to ergonomic factors should produce significant productivity gains.

UNLIKE coal mines, in which some form of artificial ventilation is rendered necessary by gases given off by the material mined and is also enforced by the mining laws of all countries, metalliferous mines have almost entirely relied on natural ventilation, viz., that due to the difference in temperature between the outside atmosphere and the mine air. In small mines natural ventilation has proved sufficient, but as mining proceeds at a greater depth, and where large ore bodies arebeing attacked the writer is of opinion that some means of artificial ventilation will be rendered necessary if only from an economic standpoint.The Broken Hill Proprietary Mine was one of the first metal mines to introduce a scheme of artificial ventilation on a large scale. In order to render the working conditions of the semi-friable stopes of Block 12 and the lower levels of Block 11 morecomfortable for the men at work in these places, in 1903 it was decided to install a fan to thoroughly ventilate these stopes. The fan chosen was a Capell double-inlet fan beltdriven from a steam engine: this engine was later on replacedby an electric motor. The fan was put in commission at the latter end of 1904; its principal dimensions are as follows: Length 6 ft. 6 in., diam. 7 ft., diam. of inlet 4 ft. 7i in. The fan is reversible, though this is a rather misleading term, asthe direction in which the fan blades revolve is not reversed...

An understanding of the way that solutes are transported in mining or natural environments is essential to the development of sound strategies for managing waste disposal. Research on miscible pollutant movement in unsaturated porous media is carried out both experimentally and numerically. Results of numerical modelling are obtained by solving the groundwater flow equation and the solute transport equation. The finite element method is employed and comparisons between simulation results and experimental data are found in remarkable agreement.

This paper describes the latest open pit optimisation techniques,which now go beyond merely finding an optimal outline. The paper starts by briefly reviewing pit design techniques before optimsation. It then goes on to describe the pit optimisation procedure and the extensions to it which allow the automatic generation of nested families of pits. Next, the properties of families of nested pits are examined and the paper explains how they can be used to simulate certain mining sequences and schedules. Finally, we describe an actual study which was done using this kind of Software.

Direct reduction of iron ore (DR) is one of the promising technology emerging in the world's steel industry. Kinetics and Mossbauer studies of DR with hydrogen have been carried out at two temperatures of 600¦C and 800¦C in this investigation. The results show that different controlling steps govern the reduction rate at different temperatures. The mechanism was also found to vary during the reduction. The Mossbauer spectra of the samples reduced in various time intervals were studied to determine the phase changes during reduction.

The CIP process for gold recovery has enjoyed widespread application in most gold-producing countries. The development of a mathematical model of the CIP process has value for use in process design, process optimisation, and process control. Mathematical model development through laboratory experimentation is an important step in the design and optimisation of the CIP process. For this purpose, data has been generated through small scale laboratory leaching and adsorption tests both in batch and continuous mode. This test program has been carried out on specific ores of various types prior to the application of the models to production CIP plants utilising these ores. The applicability of leaching models derived from batch experiments was tested in a continuous five stage CIP pilot plant. The models were then adapted to scale-up the batch to the small scale continuous operation.

Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past 10 years has been 5·5 per cent compared to a world average of 4·1 per cent.Over the next 10 years growth rate is expected to increase to 6 per cent per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry.By the end of the 19705 natural gas is expected to supply more than 9 per cent of Australia's primary energy market. Coal will supply 40 per cent and petroleum products 47 per cent. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but will make only a small contribution in the period.Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970s and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude oil, while supplying 60-70 per cent of requirements in the initialyears, will need regular and sizable additions if they are to keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated that new discoveries will need to approximate ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date.
