In tunnel construction or other underground construction, a detailed knowledge of the rock mass ahead of the face is essential for both safety and efficiency of work. Many tunnel collapses have been reported to occur because of lack of appropriate information, such as the geological conditions ahead of the tunnel face. One of the methods which can identify rock mass conditions is the application of drill monitoring data obtained from blasting drill holes, which can detect abrupt and unexpected changes in ground conditions, geological structure and the mechanical and physical properties of rock mass. This paper presents a new approach to how drill performance parameters can be used for prediction of geological conditions ahead of tunnel face. The predictions are based on monitoring the drill parameters of instantaneous advance speed, torque and tool pressure. In order to assess conditions ahead of tunnel face, tunnel seismic profiling (TSP) and a horizontal boring investigation were undertaken and the obtained data compared to the drilling data. The predicted results using drilling performance parameters correlated well with geological conditions ahead of tunnel face.

Water is becoming an increasingly valuable commodity in Australia and the mining community is finding itself competing with pastoralists, domestic consumers and industry for access to what is an essential but finite resource. This paper will provide an overview of various legislative regimes in Australia governing water resources, and will review some of the fundamental issues which should be considered by mining companies when contracting with other parties for the supply of water. The paper will focus on mechanisms to secure access to water for mining purposes, and will deal with the following issues: Grants of water entitlements under legislation û (navigating the legislative requirements necessary to facilitate the taking and use of water for mining activities) The paper will focus on the key legislative requirements for securing access to water in Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory, and will examine: compliance with regulatory processes for securing water entitlements through the grant of water allocations, licences and permits, etc; and dealings with water entitlements (ie statutory mechanisms for transferring water entitlements on a temporary or permanent basis). Securing access to water under water entitlements through contractual means. The paper will also review of some of the fundamental issues which should be considered by mining companies when contracting with holders of water entitlements for the supply of water from both groundwater and surface water sources. These issues include (inter alia): securing appropriate rights to take and use water in compliance with relevant legislation, the necessity to protect the validity of underlying water entitlements, ensuring the security of supply for the contract term, access rights affecting water entitlements and other important issues relating to the security of water entitlements for miners.

Drilling has disclosed a sequence of Cainozoic sediments immediately to the west of the Ediacara mineral field containing little or no dolomitic debris in the lower and middle sections, but with gravel beds of dolomite derived from local rocks in the upper part. It is suggested that the lower and middle sequence of Cainozoic strata was deposited over the area of the Ediacara Range, and that this range was uplifted, probably as a horst block, during Quaternary times and was first exposed to subaerial erosion during the upper Pleistocene epoch.Lower Cambrian dolomites with associated stratiform lead mineralization, which formed the target of drilling on the western downthrown block of the Ediacara Fault, were eroded before deposition of Cainozoic sediments.Intense leaching of basal Cambrian dolomites around the periphery of the Ediacara Basin took place during Mesozoic and Tertiary times. This leaching process has resulted in enrichment of copper and lead mineralization in a thick marginal zone of residual clayey material overlain by dolomitic collapse breccia. These zones of leaching and enrichment were preserved under Cainozoic sediments which have subsequently been eroded. The Ediacara Fault appears to have been a major conduit for mineralizing fluids and is the main lineament of the Torrens Hinge Zone. Contemporaneous movements on this fault have controlled rates of depositionand thickness of sediments across the fault during Adelaidean and Cainozoic times. Though latest movements of this fault have been west block down, the predominant movement has been east block down with associated thickening of sediments to the east in the Adelaide Geosync1ine.

The performance of 460 stope surfaces at WMC ResourcesÆ Olympic Dam Operation (ODO) has been used to investigate the confidence that can be placed in the Stability Graph Method for design of stope dimensions. A detailed database of stope performance and ground condition information was established for each stope. The database contains all the required stability graph information as well as other factors thought to influence stability, such as discrete major structures, poor shape and exposure time. The performance of each stope surface was quantified by calculating Equivalent Linear Overbreak/Slough (ELOS). The performance of stope walls and crowns was plotted on the supported and unsupported case history stability graphs. Based on this information an ODO design limit of HR = 3.3 x NÆ0.33 has been suggested for stope walls. Walls that plotted above this line were 80 per cent stable, 20 per cent unstable and zero per cent failed. Below the line 60 per cent were stable, 30 per cent unstable and ten per cent failed. Supported crowns that are flat or arched in shape and are not within the influence of major structures can be designed in the stability graphÆs æstable zoneÆ with a strong likelihood of stability. The Stability Graph Method did not reliably predict the performance of unsupported crowns at ODO.

The rapid growth of world civilisation will have a significant impact on the way humans live in the future. As the global population increases and more countries demand a higher standard of living, the world must provide more food and greater energy and mineral resources to sustain this growth. The difficulty of doing this is compounded by three broad trends: the conversion of agricultural land to development uses; the increasing urbanisation of the world's population; and growing concern for the maintenance and improvement of the environment, especially regarding global warming and the impact of population growth. Underground space utilisation offers opportunities for helping address these trends.

The dispersion pattern of heavy metals in soil and water is a consequence of complex geophysical and geochemical processes. Metal release from mining sites and subsequent migration occur primarily through acid mine drainage and erosion of waste and tailings dumps. Water plays a significant role in heavy metal mobilisation. Whilst it acts as a storage buffer for the pollutants, it is also the medium in which most of the reactions take place, and is undoubtedly the most significant transport vector in the pollution process. The intrinsic properties of the acidic drainage such as chemical composition, speciation of key mineral components, redox potential and pH are master variables controlling metal release, transport, deposition, reactivity and availability to biota. The mobility of heavy metals is strongly increased by acidification from acid mine drainage, and the discharge of these metals into the receiving waters results in numerous physical, chemical and biological responses in which the environment can affect the metal and vice versa. The result is an overwhelming number of association/dissociation, substitution, adsorption/desorption reactions, giving rise to a complex migration pattern. The attempt to understand and describe the dispersion pattern of heavy metals is complicated by the nature and level of interaction between the geochemical and hydrodynamic processes that generate and control the movement of the pollutants in the geosphere. Transport models which can be used to predict the behaviour of metal pollutants in a natural environment are still in the initial phases of development and their application to real life situations is limited. The Biochemical Cycle adds another dimension to the mobility of heavy metals. Metals form an important component of the food chain for man and plants. Biological uptake of metals from the bedrock and soil by organisms can result in migration paths very difficult to follow. Biodegradation or assimilation is just a tip of the iceberg.

Starting from comprehensive programme systems for monitoring tasks of any kind, this paper follows the steps of the programme system hierarchy from top to bottom. The monitoring and control centres for entire production units, the subordinate centres, i.e. district control centres, the microcomputer based autonomous control systems, and data input by mobile terminals are discussed. To an increasing extent, the main emphasis is shifted from monitoring and control of individual machinery to optimized operation of extremely complex comprehensive systems. Network displays, for instance displays of production, transport, supply- and evacuation-networks as well as of safety systems, gain increasing importance. Personnel deployment systemsand planning networks as well as stocktaking and accounting are more and more closely linked with the above-mentioned networks. In order to keep development and application (purchasing) costs low, and to assure compatibility, the use of standard modules is to be assigned particular importance. New module developments are introduced, and the design of standard interfaces for computer and module coupling are discussed.For conclusion, a short view is given on the opinion of the line manage-ments on how future hierarchic systems should be featured in terms of individual units and overall systems, and used.

The Murray Basin is known to contain major deposits of heavy mineral sands and intensive exploration for new deposits is being conducted in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. The western Basin was well served in the Pliocene and Early Pleistocene by a variety of appropriate sediment sources, and potential coastal traps. Immature, fluvially-sourced sediments forming the Pliocene coastal complex of the Marmon-Jabuk Range in South Australia are part of a marginal marine assemblage containing a suite of economically important heavy minerals that include ihnenite, zircon, rutile and tourmaline. From a consideration of Pliocene palaeogeography and coastal dynamics, specific targets where concentrating processes are likely to have operated are identified in the South Australian portion of the Murray Basin. Such palaeo-environments include the down-drift, littoral zone of discrete foredunes or coastal barriers, the source area for transgressive dune complexes, tombolo facies, and intertidal shoals and sandbanks. Similar coastal processes are recognised for a preserved Early Pleistocene barrier complex.

In general, modern mining companies all over the world have to face the same economic circumstances as any other part of the industry: considering the tough competition, production and haulage costs must be reduced permanently whereas productivity has to increase substantially in order to remain price-competitive. However, the imposed pressure also offers the chance for consideration of alternative mining concepts, the application of which can result in substantial cost savings and improvements in the quality of the mined material. As one of these alternative mining concepts, surface mining technology offers substantial improvements in productivity. It also influences aspects of haulage, such as safety and speed, in a positive way. The capability of selective mining ties in nicely with the production of small-sized crushed material, the granulometry of which allows the elimination of the primary crusher. Mine operators profit from reduced costs for the maintenance of their haulage vehicles due to reduced wear, a decreased likelihood of accidents and higher average transport speeds. Surface Miners can also be used to cut haul roads into virgin rocks and leave a clean and level surface behind, improving the quality of these created roads. Thus, it is even possible to use ordinary road trucks for transport in mines. The current paper outlines in detail the effects of the surface mining technology on mining and haulage aspects and reports on applications where substantial cost savings could be achieved due to the application of what is also referred to as æsimple mining processÆ.

The advent and easy availability of fast and powerful digital computers has marked a transition from one era to another in the field of process control in many industries. Mineral processing is no exception. Aims, practices and problems associated with process control of mineral beneficiation plants in the 'old days' are compared with those available at present. Although basic processes remain generally the same, there have been simultaneous social and economic developments, which directly relate to the development and present value of process control. Lower head grades are now treated, plant capacities have increased, and a large proportion of future capital in the mineral industry will be associated with large capacity plant, treating still lower grades. Environmental considerations have pressurised moves to better control in some areas. With these changes, economic operating incentives have changed, and process control has, in many plants, become more critical. Finally, while computer technology has developed recently at a very rapid rate, developments in the fields of instrumentation, basic on-line measurement and sampling have in general lagged behind, limiting the progress possible in process control. The mining of an underground orebody requires development both in waste and ore before stoping commences. Regardless of what metal is being extracted, the waste development is minimised to reduce the cost per unit of metal mined. At the Western Metals Zinc Kapok mine site, reducing the cost per tonne of lead and zinc mined is paramount. Decline waste development costs can be minimised by methods such as increased gradient or reduced drive size. Ore development will also involve some mining of waste. The degree to which waste mining can be minimised will depend on the thickness and dip of the orebody. The drive geometry will also determine the percentage of waste within the face. It is by mining methods such as resue mining that selective mining may be used to maximise the amount of metal mined and reduce waste dilution. Resue mining can be used around a set of selection criteria established by the mine site. These selection criteria will determine how resue mining can be applied to the mine site. Selection criteria include firing times, number of headings available, acceptance criteria for percentage lost metal, dilution and most importantly operator acceptance. The single pass or two pass resue mining method should be chosen depending on the site acceptance criteria and selection criteria. The Western Metals Zinc Kapok mine site has established a set of parameters which accept the two pass resue mining method for the mining of the ore drives. The blasting results from a single pass resue method were reviewed during more recent trials in a single heading. Through a comparison of results, the parameters allowed the decision to determine the applicability of resue mining and its current form to Kapok. This paper outlines the parameters set by the Kapok mine site, reviews these in relation to the two forms of resue mining and examines the criteria which make this mining method applicable for Western Metals Zinc.

The paper describes the progress made in the last decade with the introduction of comprehensive monitoring of the mine atmosphere into U.K. collieries. Brief descriptions are given of the various portable and fixed point instruments which have been developed for this purpose and the methods available for transmission of information to the surface are also discussed. The paper also outlines some of the research work being carried out both in the laboratory and underground on the development of alternative methods of fire detection. Some of the results from this work are illustrated and discussed.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) skarn Cu-Au deposit is the deepest explored part of the Ertsberg East Skarn System extending from the surface at 4200 m elevation to the DMLZ at 2900 to 2600 m. The DMLZ is hosted in an upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary siliciclastic and carbonate succession adjacent to the 3 Ma Ertsberg pluton. Much of the DMLZ ore is hosted by mixed assemblages of siliciclastic and dolomitised carbonate strata that have been altered to Mg-rich skarn assemblages. Unaltered equivalent strata from a 300 m cored interval in the Yellow Valley Syncline were characterised petrographically and representative samples were analysed for major element compositions. These stratigraphic and chemical units are interpreted to be responsible for the varying skarn lithologies within the DMLZ. The dominant prograde skarn assemblages are controlled by protolith composition, notably the relative abundance of quartz, dolomite, and calcite within the protolith. Models based on isochemical metamorphism of mixed assemblages of quartz and dolomite suggest that the formation of the forsterite-diopside dominant skarn assemblages resulted in the greatest amount of pore space increase. DMLZ Cu-Au concentrations were locally controlled by host lithology, with structural features providing fluid pathways that focused the mineralising fluids. Diamond exploration in Queensland is influenced by the South African approach modified by the discovery of diamonds in Lamproite in Western Australia. The current approach is to explore for Kimberlite and Lamproite bodies using indicator minerals dispersed by fluvial and colluvial processes. In the north-west, diamonds are derived from kimberlitic and lamproitic sources, whereas those in the coastal and subcoastal areas of eastern Queensland are associated with xenoliths included in rocks formed during Cainozoic volcanism. In these areas, sapphire is commonly associated with diamonds. In New South Wales diamonds in economic quantities occur in alkali basaltic intrusions and a subduction model has been proposed for these occurrences (Barrows et al, 1996). Exploration for diamonds in Australia increased following the discovery and exploitation of the Argyle mine. State geological surveys have produced digital information on the local occurrences of diamonds. As part of the Smart Mining Initiative (2006 - 2010), the Geological Survey of Queensland compiled a database and report on microdiamonds and diamond indicator minerals from open file company exploration data from 1968 to 2008 from the Department of Mines and EnergyÆs QDEX system. Most exploration in Queensland was conducted with exploration for other commodities. There is no commercial exploitation of diamonds in Queensland and, to date, only rare occurrences of microdiamonds. There is a regional difference in diamond occurrences with the kimberlitic and lamproitic models favoured for the north-western regions of the State and the subduction (S-type model) favoured for the eastern coastal zone linked to Cainozoic alkalic basaltic volcanism. Further diamond exploration is warranted in Cainozoic basalt provinces along the eastern coastal and near coastal regions and in the north-west of the state in conjunction with airborne geophysics flown as part of current Departmental Smart initiatives. Mining companies around the world devote considerable effort to production reconciliation and metallurgical accounting. However, although sampling, weighing and analysis methods used to obtain the raw data for metal balancing continue to improve, they are still areas that are sadly neglected. Using the latest metallurgical accounting package to improve metal balancing is fundamentally flawed if the data used are unreliable in the first place. The basic rule for correct sampling is that all parts of the material being sampled must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. If this rule is not respected, sampling bias can easily be introduced. Unlike precision, which can be improved by replication, bias cannot be reduced once it is present. Sampling and sample processing procedures must therefore be carefully designed both to minimise bias and to obtain acceptable precision. The most suitable sampling location is the discharge point of a process stream, where increments can be obtained by taking a complete cross-section of the stream with a sample cutter. Sampling devices that take only part of the stream may introduce serious bias and must be avoided. The moisture content and wet mass of the material being sampled are of similar importance to chemical analyses for determining metal content. The accurate determination of moisture content is particularly difficult, because the moisture content of samples can change after the sample is taken, eg due to moisture evaporation. Hence, moisture samples need to be taken quickly and placed in sealed bags or containers that are impervious to moisture. The moisture content should then be determined without delay. To determine wet mass, a range of weighing methods are used in industry, including weighbins, weighbridges, conveyor weightometers and platform scales. The precision and accuracy of these methods vary considerably, so it is important to select a method with the appropriate precision and ensure that the weighscale is well maintained and regularly calibrated.

Palabora Mining Company operates an integrated open pit mine, concentrator, smelter and refinery complex located in the Northern Province of South Africa. The Palabora open pit went into production in 1966, mining 30 000 t/d to produce some 62 000 tpa of copper. With continuous modification and improvement, a mining rate of 82 000 t/d, producing up to 135 000 tpa of refined copper, has been achieved. While these improvements have also enabled the mine life to be nearly doubled, the open pit will reach the end of its economic life by 2003. The Palabora orebody is vertical and the reserve extends to a depth of 1800 m over an area of 700 m by 200 m. Studies to assess the economics of mining the orebody by underground means began in the mid-1980s. These studies indicated that block caving is the lowest cost underground mining method that would generate a suitable return. In March 1996, a decision was made to develop a 30 000 t/d block cave mine that will extend the life of the Palabora Mining Company by a further 20 years. In terms of the relatively high rock strength and the resultant coarse fragmentation that is expected at the drawpoint, the Palabora cave can be considered rather unique when compared to other block cave operations. This paper describes the project in broad terms and details the mining method, particularly with respect to the cavability of the orebody and the design features to deal with the coarse fragmentation. The project commenced in July 1996 and final development of the undercut and drawbells is scheduled for completion in November 2003. This paper describes the status of the project and planning as of April 2000.

The results of the washing of coal are often presented by using Partition Curves. By analogy, it is possible to express the results of screening by using similar partition curves. As in the coal washing processes, this method determines the accuracy of screening and is also suitable for different separations depending on the difference in size distribu- tion. This method compares the effectiveness of two screening operations and forecasts the performances.

Warkworth Mining has been successfully operating a large open cut coal mining operation in the Hunter Valley of NSW since 1981.The mine is a complexmulti seam operation and utalises both truck and shovel and draglinetechniques. Warkworth Coal Sales Ltd markets approximately 10 different coal types.Since the mines inceptionthe development of mine scheduling and planning has been an ongoing programme. Resource recovery and coal utalisation have been the driving factors with this development as we strive to achieve maximum revenue for the investment dollar.The principal aim of this paper is to discuss the scheduling methodology as it is utilised todayhighlighting the interaction in the development of the final coal products schedule.Whilst the system is notperfect it has evolved and operated successfully in these difficult economic times and offers a practical and achievable approach to resource optimisation.

Permian ultramafic and associated rocks form a belt in East Nelson and contain widespread, but minor, chromite and copper mineralisation and some mining was carried out last century. Since mining ceased, about 1910, little mapping of the belt has been carried out although its origin has been debated vigorously. Recently it has been inferred to form part of a ophiolite sequence, which has been tectonically disrupted to form a melange, and several 'plate -tectonic' models have been proposed. Mapping in the central part of the belt has shown that mTlanges are to the east of the ophiolite sequence. Faulting is widespread so that in anyone section part of the sequence may be absent. Some of the faulting is difficult to recognise and probably took place during or soon after the sequence accumulated. Other faulting is clearly of Cenozoic age and includes major NNE striking faults, with large horizontal displacement, and approximately east-west striking faults with almost entirely vertical movement. The writer agrees that 'plate tectonics' could provide an acceptable explanation for the origin of the ophiolite sequence but the models so far proposed do not take into account the nature and field relationships of the rock units present. Copper Mineralisation is largely controlled by the younger faults, particularly those striking about north-east, and is largely confined to the western part of the ultramafic rocks particularly where slivers of the volcanics of the adjacent Lee River Group are enclosed. Mineralisation, along NNE striking shear zones, has recently been found in the volcanics some distance from the ultramafic rocks. The chromite mineralization is in the form of primary layering in the basal part of the ultramafic belt although in places it has been concentrated into lenses probably during serpentinisation.

Forrestania Nickel Mines is owned and operated by Outokumpu Mining Australia Pty Ltd and is situated 400 km east of Perth, WA in the Forrestania Greenstone Belt. Production started in late-1992 at a rate of 600 ktpa and reserves were exhausted in August 1999. Cosmic Boy is the largest of three mines worked and operates in a high stress environment with both very high and very low rock mass strength domains. Stoping commenced in 1995 using conventional benching with long hole slot rises but because of drilling and blasting problems the mine switched to airleg rising. In 1997 the mining method was changed to smaller scale up hole retreat benching with each stope requiring a slot rise of up to 16 m length. This method does not allow top access to the rise location and so airleg rising was used until mid-1998. At this stage mining was approaching areas of higher stress for which it was clear that an alternative to this entry method of rising was required. Small diameter raise boring and Cubex rigs were considered but because of the set up costs were not considered to be viable. Since the ore is relatively soft, burn cuts were developed to make use of specially designed 152, 203 and 254 mm diameter reamer bits (depending on the rise length) and drilled with conventional long hole drilling equipment. These rises are fired in one blast together with the slot rings. In the northern lower section of the mine (below 400 m) the principle stress has been estimated at 60 MPa and this causes minor strain bursting in BIF development headings and loose material to form on walls and backs. Trials of destress blasting modelled on Canadian experience has greatly reduced strain bursting at the face. However only around 300 m of development was affected and so this method had not been optimised when mine development was completed.
