Proterozoic gold deposits in the Pine Creek Geosyncline are at present receiving renewed attention with the opening of old mines and several new discoveries. This important polymetallic province contains occurrences of gold, base metals, tin, tungsten, tantalum, platinum, palladium and aluminium. These resources have been exploited over the past century with periods of major interest during the turn of the century and during the past 20 years. Economically viable resources of predominantly gold, eg Pine Creek, Woolwonga, Brocks Creek and Union Reefs, and Ag-Pb-Zn, eg Woodcutters are currently in development or being mined. A variety of genetic models, ranging from magmatic through hydrothermal to syngenetic, have been postulated in the past for the formation of gold deposits in the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The first discussion on the regional geological factors that control ore deposition in the Brocks Creek-Howley District was by Sullivan and Iten (1952). They recognised that the most important ore deposits are associated with anticlinal and domal structures and that granites may be a controlling factor in the localisation of the mineralisation. More recently a group of authors, Needham and Roarty (1980), Goulevitch (1980), Nicholson and Eupene (1984), Sanger-Von Oepen, Friedrich and Kater, (1988), Nicholson and Eupene (1990) and Kruse, Whitehead and Mulder (1990) have suggested an exhalitive syngenetic origin, or remobilised syngenetic during dolerite intrusion and/or regional deformation, for gold mineralisation, especially those associated with South Alligator Group lithologies (eg Bridge Creek, Mt Bonnie group of mines and Cosmopolitan Howley). Studies carried out at the Bridge Creek and Western Arm Prospects over the last three years suggest that syngenetic models for gold mineralisation are less relevant to gold mineralisation in the Howley District than first thought (Wall, 1989; Partington, 1990). The Bridge Creek prospect has been cited as an example of a syngenetic-syngenetic remobilised deposit (Oepen, Friedrich and Kater, 1988) while the Western Arm prospect is more clearly a vein hosted epigenetic deposit and a comparison of the styles of mineralisation at both prospects will be made. The nature of the gold mineralisation at both prospects will be described and compared, and possible genetic models for gold mineralisation and their relevance to regional exploration discussed.

At the second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress held in 1927, the Empire Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions was formed and it was proposed that the Council take steps to prepare a "Review of the Mineral Resources and Industries of the Empire." At the third congress in 1930, it was resolved that the proposal to institute the review should be submitted to the Imperial Conference held in 1930. This was done, and the Minerals Committee, of the Imperial Economic Committee compiled, an interimreport which was based on statistics of imports and exports, and did not consider resources and consumption.In 1942 the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, wrote to the Empire Council and stated that it was desirable that the Council should be in a position to take part in decisions affecting the future of the mining and metallurgical industries. The Council communicated with the constituent Institutions regarding the nominations of two members then in England. Subsequently the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical ,Institute of India prepared a review of the mineral resources and industries of India and their post-war development, and the Empire Council forwarded a copy to the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and asked if that Institute would submit a review on simjIar lines for Australia. The Mt Todd Project is located 42 km northwest of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The identified mineral resource estimate for the Batman gold deposit is 66.7 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t). Proved and Probable Ore Reserves total 42.3 Mt grading 1.5 g/t. Orebody definition and reserve estimation is based on extensive percussion and diamond drilling. Exhaustive bias analysis comparing grades produced from different drilling techniques has been undertaken. Similarly, detailed check assaying programs have been run to validate grade data produced by commercial laboratories used during the exploratory drilling phase. Significant biases were established from both studies and appropriate 'corrections' were made to drillhole databases prior to final resource and reserve estimation. 3D geostatistical modelling has been utilised for resource and reserve estimation, with specialist consultants contracted for this work. The strength reduction method (SRM) has been implemented in the FLAC3D finite difference software and applied to coalmine entry support evaluations. The FLAC3D numerical models have been calibrated against instrumented field sites in varying geologies, depths and field stress conditions. The calibration between the field and model results obtained a satisfactory match for rock deformation and support response. Previous research has also developed good correlations between numerical model stability estimations using the SRM and empirically derived stability estimations using the analysis of roof bolt systems (ARBS) software and the coalmine roof rating (CMRR). The purpose of this paper is to further apply the SRM to investigate how specific geotechnical and support parameters can impact coalmine entry stability. Results from different studies demonstrate how the calibrated models were used to investigate a few of the well-known questions in both mine design and support design. For mine design the impact of strong and weak beds in the roof strata, rotating the principal stresses and weakening the floor on excavation stability is investigated. For support design the impact of support length, support spacing and adding cable bolts to the design is demonstrated. These scenarios are evaluated in developmental coalmine entries for a variety of geology and field stress conditions. Stability factors are calculated for each scenario using the SRM. Spherical calcium dioleate particles (~10 ¦m in diameter) were used as AFM (atomic force microscope) probes to measure interaction forces of the collector colloid with calcite and fluorite surfaces. The attractive AFM force between the calcium dioleate sphere and the fluorite surface is strong and has longer range than DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) prediction. The repulsive AFM force between the calcium dioleate sphere and the fluorite surface does not agree with the DLVO prediction. Consideration of non-DLVO forces, including the attractive hydrophobic force and the repulsive hydration force, was necessary to explain the experimental results. The non-DLVO interactions considered were justified by the different interfacial water structures at fluorite- and calcite-water interfaces as revealed by the numerical computation experiments using molecular dynamics simulation.

Recent develognents in zinc flotation at the North Broken Hill Limited concentrator are discussed. An outline of the history of zinc flotation and a description of current practice is presented. Installation of on-stream X-ray analysis probes has resulted in inproved metallurgical performance and focussed attention on automatic control. Results are presented of investigations made over the past six years which have led to the formulation of experimental schemes for the automatic control of zinc flotation.

Instantaneous outbursts have occurred at Metropolitan Colliery from the pick and shovel work of early days to the modern mining techniques of today. Developments have been the introduction of an emission index to measure the proneness of the coal to outbursts, drainage and destressing by large diameter holes, attempts at higher productivity by the introduction of pulsed infusion shotfiring and improvements in ventilation. The future plans and aims for the Colliery include prediction of outbursts, seam gas pre- drainage and longwall mining.

Integrated mining software does not generally provide tools to help the mining engineer to achieve this objective. A methodology of environmental performance evaluation in mining developments is proposed, as well as guidelines and procedures for obtaining information to improve their environmental performance. Environmental performance is the results of the mining activities and their relation to environmental issues. If this evaluation is carried out on an on-going basis, it is possible to anticipate or to identify the formation and development of an environmental impact in its early stages. Evidence or trends identified by environmental evaluation provide valuable information to prevent further damage. The proposed methodology is based on the significant environmental aspects of a selected monitored job site by environmental indicators which are then compared with previously defined environmental criteria and targets or goals. The methodology procedures also take into account the environmental accounting of the investments and expenditures.

This paper describes how Western Mining Corporation uses sophisticated diesel equipment in mining of shallow flat dipping narrow ore- bodies in the Otter Juan area. Though in most cases the stoping method chosen relies on hand held conventional equip- ment, the 'ore handling systems have been designed to allow for a relatively high degree of mechanization. The use of diesel loaders, trucks along with three boom jumbos is described. A single one in nine decline driven as the means of access to the various ore surfaces at Otter/Juan resulted in the first ore being produced first 15 weeks after the first round was fired in the Ore-Decline. Now, three years later, the.mine is in full production, and in 1971/72 produced 392,000 dry tonnes of high grade Nickel Ore.

Mesothermal lode-gold deposits often pose problems during sampling because of their complex and erratic gold grade distribution, and the presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation protocols must form the basis of any resource estimate at whatever stage a project is at. Design of a sampling regime must be based upon a thorough understanding of orebody mineralogy and geology. This should include consideration of gold particle size and distribution. The sample type, size and density employed must also be based on the underlying geology of the deposit. Choice of sample preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if fundamental sampling error and analytical errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, consistently understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and bulk leach extractable gold assay. The proportion of coarse gold within samples will have a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assay method. The application of Gy sampling theory can help to reduce errors within the processing of samples of broken rock. Quality control/assurance of sampling regimes must also be critically assessed. The problems associated with sampling mesothermal lode-gold type deposits are presented as case studies from Western Australia and North America.

Management requires up-to-date information on the activities of an enterprise in order to maintain control and to assist in decision-making and planning. In today's environment it is essential that this information is immediately available and in an easily assimilated format. If this is not the case, management is forced to make decisions based on intuition and past experience. At Mt Newman Mining Co, a computer application has been developed and implemented with the objective of providing this type of information to management. The Key Parameter Reporting System (as the application is known) allows for daily (constant) on-line capture of selected production statistics, safety statistics and free format textual comments relating to topics such as industrial relations, major maintenance and other pertinent news. Information can be retrieved,'and displayed or printed in either a tabular or graphical format. All senior managers have colour visual display units in their offices for immediate access to the system. Access to selected sensitive information is controlled. All company staff are able to retrieve unsecured information from the system via visual display units installed in all company Locations.

To control the airblast from blasting to regulatory limits at environmentally sensitive sites near the Collinsville Coal Mining Operations, it has been necessary for Thiess Mining to incorporate a wavefront reinforcement analysis model in the predictive environmental airblast design. Controlling airblast from cast blasting 70 m high faces with 2000-3000 kg of explosives per hole within 700 m of houses presents a considerable challenge to the blasting personnel. This paper describes the model used and summarises the results of an investigation designed to quantify the increase in airblast indicated by wavefront reinforcement diagrams to further calibrate the model for future prediction.

In this paper, the current methods for predicting surface subsidence due to underground coal mining are evaluated first. A single index, called a strata parameter (P), is then proposed to describe the overall character of the undermined strata in the context of surface subsidence. Based on the strata parameter, a method for predicting the maximum surface subsidence for various panel width (w)/depth (h) ratios is presented, which has been tested against specific empirical curves or data from several coalfields in different countries. From the data relating to several coalfields, a linear relationship between the reported average angle of draw and the strata parameter has been established. It has also been found that the strata parameter can be used for studying the locations of the inflection points and the shapes of transverse subsidence profiles.

Based on preliminary computer model simulations and stability analyses, both longi- tudinal and transverse, large dimension, cut- and-fill rooms were designed for the parallel dipping ore layers at Kamoto mine. Full scale testing of the designed rooms showed that the rooms are stable and that the rock behavior is predictable. Ordinary waste rock was selected as the filling material because the fill was found to carry little load.

Twelve years ago, Jeffrey Mining Machinery Division of Dresser Industries Inc. developed the 120H HELIMINER. This machine was the world's first fixed-drum continuous miner and soon became the standard among manufacturers of continuous miners throughout the mining machinery industry. This paper will first outline a brief history of continuous miner development, then discuss significant parameters which are essential to a successful continuous miner design, and finally describe a number of specific applications of Jeffrey continuous miners in a variety of materials, such as coal, potash, iron ore, and trona, around the world.

The 14.7 km Mt. MacDonald Tunnel beneath Rogers Pass in Canada used both drill-and-blast and machine boring methods. A unique ventilation system provides for diesel operations. The design featured minimum construction support and an unrei.nforced poured concrete lining. The west heading was excavated in a single-stage drill-and-blast operation. The east heading used a TBM top heading with a drill-and-blast keyhole bench. The choice of methods was controlled by varying geology, with up to 1,700 m rock cover. Construction performance and progress are evaluated.
