A research field of interest and a topical subject with the aim to reduce a considerable amount of coke in ironmaking is the injection into blast furnace stack of hot reducing gas combined with use of auxiliary fuels at tuyeres. In recent years evaluation studies and prelimirfary industrial experiments have been carried out on this subject in Europe and Japan. Even if these experiments seem to confirm the advantages theoretically expected, it appears as useful to cast more light on new problems concerning the improvements of this technique. In this report some aspects are analysed on fluid dynamics of blast furnace process with two gas flows: the main flow coming from the bosh and cross flow of the reducing gas injected in the lower shaft. A research on a blast furnace physical model was made with the aim to obtain information about the phenomena which occur in the full scale blast furnace. This work was carried out on cold models IN and tridimensional) in which the radial gas distribution was experimentally measured. A mathematical model based on gas diffusion was implemented aimed at simulating gas distribution inside the reactor taking into account the number of injection tuyeres. A good agreement between experimental and theoretical data allows for extending results to industrial practice in order to determine operating conditions assuring good performance of blast furnace with high amount of auxiliary fuels.

The resurgence of Silicosis and Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis (CWP) in coalmines has placed the spotlight back on the management of worker exposure to particulate matter across all mining sectors (Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis Select Committee, 2017). There already exists a substantial body of knowledge on particulate matter and its impacts upon human health (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, 2018). The contribution of silica to respiratory disease is well known. However, it is also clear that there are major gaps in our understanding. In part, those gaps relate to the contribution to adverse health effects of mineralogical constituents in the dust (LaBranche et al, 2021a). It is also becoming evident that the size and shape of the particulate matter can affect its potential impact on human health. The University of Queensland has developed a methodology for characterising respirable and inhalable dust samples using scanning electron microscopy. Multiple samples from numerous mining operations have already been analysed using the UQ methodology. The process has been successful in showing the variety of mineralogical components and particle size distributions present in various areas of the mines.

High interest to basic-ultrabasic rocks is ex-plained by their specific, sutural, geotectonic po-sition and by deep level of generation of ultraba-sic magmas. These two factors allow us to treat this group of rocks as valuable source of informa-tion about the lower crust and upper mantle of the Earth. Basic-ultrabasic xenolith series is another source of information about the interior of the Earth. Detailed studies of the xenolith series give valuable material to geologists as to how endogenic deposits are fed and what is their source.Besides, the interest is explained by attempts to understand the relationship between basic-ultra-basic complexes and deposits of metalliferous and non-metalliferous mineral material.Absence of genetic boundaries in manifestation of metalliferous and non-metalliferous minerals, their temporal and spatial relationship allow us to treat the minerogenesis of ultrabasic complexes as a result of one ore-forming process manifested in Koryak-Kamchatsky, Sakhalin-Japanese, Ryukyu-Korean and Taiwan-Philippines island arc systems which re-present, in the opinion of the authors, one eastern Asian chain of the Pacific ore belt (Radkevich, 11)87).

Surface oxidation is one of the most important factors that influence the flotation selectivity and recovery in the processing of complex sulphide ores. It is an inherent part of surface chemical reactions that determine whether the surface film formed on a sulphide mineral will act as a hydrophobic or hydrophilic one. Because of the highly complex surface chemistry and mineralogy involved the results of flotation tests may often be difficult to interpret. In this paper, the flotation behaviour of nickel-copper ores processed in the Sudbury area is discussed with emphasis on the effect of oxidation on individual minerals, primarily pyrrhotite. In general, moderate oxidation of a freshly ground ore promotes the flotability of all principal sulphides in the ore leading to a bulk flotation concentrate. The ease of individual mineral flotability under normal aeration conditions, which is chalcopyrite > pentlandite > pyrrotite, changes to pentlandite > chalcopyrite > pyrrhotite under oxygen-deficient conditions. This behaviour is correlated with the catalytic activity of these minerals for oxygen reduction. On the other hand, preferential oxidation of pyrrhotite may lead to a selectivity increase in flotation. Such a behaviour has been noted in the flotation of a pyrrhotite-rich process stream. The results have been discussed in the light of fundamental electrochemical interactions involving pentlandite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite and grinding media and a mechanism has been proposed to explain the selectivity.

Large Off Highway Trucks operated in this country are generally of Diesel Electric Drive, this system tends to employ the familiar Electric Wheel. A number of fleets now employ the Traction Motor System as an alternative. An investigation is made of the operation of two such fleets. A brief description is given defining the components and their basic functions in each system. Available life history is presented and system reliability, maintainability and operator reaction is examined. Although manufacturers are now offering mechanical or mechanical/hydraulic drives in the larger machines comments will be restricted to examining the Diesel Electric System. Since commencing operations in the mid 1960 period Hamersley Iron has made use of the diesel electric drive system using the familiar Electric Wheel. Unplanned dilution has the potential to seriously undermine the economic viability of a mine, and in some cases results in mine closure. The effect of stress damage on dilution has become increasingly relevant as mining depths increase. In the case of narrow vein mining, the incremental extraction of long-hole rings has the potential to result in a moving high stressed zone at the stope brow. This leads the hanging wall and footwall to experience a spike in the stress to strength ratios as the brow passes. In some cases, the stress to strength ratio may be high enough to result in fracturing or damage to the rock mass. The aim of the study described in this paper was to investigate whether stress damage results in a significant increase in dilution. The study involved analysis of overbreak from 410 case studies from the Kundana Gold mine in Western Australia. Site personnel had already undertaken calibration studies of the stress levels that result in rock mass damage. This calibration, in conjunction with numerical modelling showed that stress damaged stope walls at this mine had on average 50 per cent more overbreak than stope walls where stresses had not exceeded the damage criterion. For a design mining width of 1.5 metres, and with both walls impacted, this represents 36 per cent increase in dilution. After adjustment for possible sources of bias the difference reduced to an average 0.10 metres per stope wall, representing 13 per cent dilution for the mining width under consideration. The potential for stress damage related overbreak should therefore be considered as part of any assessment of narrow vein dilution.

Ventilation, air leakage, and various cutting, loading and support movement operations all have a role in dust distribution on longwall faces as shown by the results of a large number of dust measurements on different longwall operations in the Bulli seam on the South Coast. It is concluded that leakage of air on the face has demonstrable mfluence on the exposure of the shearer operator to dust level. It is possible to calculate dust generated by various elements of a rrurung operation on the face from a single point measurement. In the examination of dust deposition from the source of generation as a function of particle size, it is found that respirable dust can remain airborne over long distances without any significant drop in concentration, if unobstructed.

To learn more about the fundamental roof behaviour in South African coal mines, accurate underground measurements of roof deflection were conducted in bord and pillar panels during development and pillar extraction. To conduct these measurements a survey levelling technique was adapted. The overall system reading accuracy was established as being within 0,4 mm on a 15 m sighting distance. The underground sites were modelled and, for a roadway development, similar symmetrical curvatures were calculated by a linear elastic model, as were measured underground. In a pillar extraction panel, a significant amount of bed separation was measured and the roof underwent an a-symmetric movement due to the close presence of the mined out area at one side of the roadway.

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the Short Wave Infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a Quartz- Sericite-Pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

A BRIEF account of the water-power potentialities of Tasmania is given, together with possible applications of the power commercially. A short history of the Waddamana development is then given, and the main works are described.WATER POWER POTENTIALITIESTasmania is an island of approximately 24,500 sq. miles area (exclusive of small islands). An area of 12,000 sq. miles is at an elevation of over 1000 ft. above sea-level, and of 2300 sq. miles at over 3000 ft. above sea-level. Average annual rainfall varies from' over 140 in. on West Coast to 20 in. on East Coast, and for the whole island averages 48.5 in. The total water-power available, based on conservative figures for run off and efficiency, is 6,000,000 b.h.p. Only a small percentage of this total will, under present conditions, and under likely conditions in the immediate future, be capable of being developed commercially.An extensive hydro-metric and water-power survey is at present being carried out in order to collect information concerning the most promising water-power schemes. Already 400,000 b.h.p. has been located in different proposals, and there is still a large area of very likely country along the West Coast which has not been investigated yet. Tasmania thus has very vast power potentialities, which, combined with good ports and communications and wonderful mineral and timber resources, should augur well for the establishment of the great key industries, particularly chemical and metallurgical.

The satisfactory testing and characterisation of mineralisation amenable to heap leaching, is of prime importance to successful operation of a project. This paper outlines a methodology for assessing material suitability. A general model is used for classing material types for suitability for treatment and for economic analysis. The four levels of these are overburden, oxide, transitional and unoxidised materials. During exploration, reverse circulation (RC) drilling can be used effectively to define these zones by a combination of logging, analysis and provision of cuttings for column leach and bottle roll trials. RC cuttings can he used effectively for column leach trials, when calibrated against conventional processing-sized samples, obtained from surface. Tbis allows metallurgical testing to depth and definition of transitional ore types and the base of oxidation, accurately and economically with an acceptable density of samples. The accurate prediction of base of oxidation and variations in recovery with depth and ore types can be used to develop 'economic' pit designs with zones of variable recovery. Petrological studies of leaching results and examination of mineralisation types carried out on concentrates, provide information on gold distribution and physical and chemical constraints. The examination of concentrates can be particularly useful for types of mineralisation when overall gold content is frequently at or below one pan per million. Explanation of anomalous recovery of gold grains in dense goethite and solution-robbing by carbonaceous material can be identified by use of petrological and scanning electron microscope. An understanding of the role of the host rock in leaching characteristics can also he provided by petrology where siliceous or clayey materials can require significantly different treatment.

This paper aims to present the evolution of the mining method in the Prince Lyell orebody. Initial strategy and practical experience are detailed as are the reasons for and benefits of changes to the method since 1972 when underground mining began. This section of the paper starts with ten series and concludes with 40 series which was completed in 1989/90.In addition, to update the series of papers written by various authors over the past ten years on Mount Lyell, a review of the experience in the current 50 series lift of mining will be given. As well, the basic planning guidelines are discussed for 60 series - the final lift of the Prince Lyell orebody.

The Department of Mines Tasmania employs a Drilling Section for specialised drilling re- quired by government and semi-government bodies. The section has a complement of nine crews oper- ating auger, cable tool, rotary and diamond drilling plants. For some years the Department has been involved in site investigation drilling of the Derwent River. The experience gained indicated that drilling methods should be altered. In 1976 an urgent programme was requested and the opportunity was taken to solve many problems associated with previous investigations. Equipment and methods are discussed in detail. The improved technique contributed to the suc- cessful completion of the Phase 1 site investi- Gation.

The Glenrock Group forms the uppermost part of the Early Devonian to Early Carboniferous Burdekin Basin sequence in the Townsville hinterland, north Queensland. As redefined, three formations make up the Glenrock Group. The Percy Creek Volcanics (base), the dominantly epiclastic Mount Douglas Formation, and the Horse Pocket Volcanics (top). The Ellenvale beds unconformably overlie the Mount Douglas Formation and Percy Creek Volcanics and have been excluded from the Glenrock Group as defined by Wyatt and Jell (1980). Three facies associations are recognised in the Mount Douglas Formation: Alluvial Plain facies, Alluvial Fan facies and Lacustrine facies.Deposition of the Glenrock Group, began with the eruption of massive basalt and basaltic andesite lavas, probably in a volcanic arc setting. With time, the volcanism evolved to become more dacitic to rhyolitic in composition. Waning of the volcanic activity appeared to coincide with uplift of source areas (probably to the west). Deposition on an alluvial plain during this waning volcanic cycle, gave way to alluvial fans at the margins of the uplifted terrain. As the uplift ceased and the system became more mature, the alluvial fans gave way to widespread lakes. Rhyolitic ignimbrite and airfall tuff, interbedded with the alluvial plain, alluvial fan and lacustrine facies, indicate that some volcanism continued, probably vented in the uplifted terrain to the west.

Microcharacterisation, such as that described in this paper, provides understanding of a mineral system at multiple scales, and understanding microscale variations is the key to understanding the large-scale variations in a mineral system. More than 50 high-grade lode samples from across Plutonic Gold Mine (Plutonic), Marymia Inlier, Western Australia were analysed by a variety of techniques, including micro X-ray fluorescence (µXRF) mapping, micro X-ray computed tomography (µCT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission gun SEM, electron back-scatter detector (EBSD), proton-induced X-ray emission microprobe and synchrotron XRF mapping. These data demonstrate that competency contrasts are the key to governing the location of Au mineralisation at Plutonic. Micro CT imaging of high-grade samples shows the Au filling in voids and pore-space in the rock, after having travelled along more permeable layers and already existing or reaction-induced pores formed during hydrothermal circulation. Using 3D visualisation, the Au is seen to form a connected network that appears undisturbed at the scale of the samples, and a high-grade Au deposition event was one of the last events to affect the rock. This interpretation is supported by SEM analyses on high-grade samples that reveal calc-silicate (epidote-clinozoisite) alteration that is not present in lower Au grade samples, which are typically dominated by potassic alteration, and that sulfides are typically less abundant close to the Au. The replacement of biotite by chlorite is an alteration associated with the high-grade Au-mineralising fluid. Gold is coarsest where Au particles are located on the margins of minerals, typically sulfide and quartz grains, suggesting the importance of rheological contrast at the microscale. Furthermore, EBSD data reveals that Au is undeformed and overprints peak metamorphic and retrograde minerals. Data confirm recent deposit-scale observations, suggesting that deposition of high-grade, visible Au was related to a hydrothermal fluid circulation event late in the geological history of Plutonic.CITATION:Gazley, M F, Duclaux, G, Fisher, L A, Hough, R M and Pearce, M A, 2015. At Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold MineÆs (KCGMÆs) Fimiston Operations, located on the periphery of Kalgoorlie Boulder in Western Australia, roughly 7.5 million tonnes of rock are broken each month for the extraction of gold. With the close proximity of neighbours to the mining operations in the Chaffers Cut Back, special blasting techniques and tools were employed by KCGM to manage the blast induced vibrations and noise in this area. The i-konTM initiation system coupled with OricaÆs complementary modelling and analysis tools offered the complete blast management package. With these tools KCGM management and Orica Mining Services commenced an investigation into the benefits of electronic initiation. Prior to the commencement of electronic blasting, initial modelling was conducted to examine the vibration time waveforms and their frequency content, as these were expected to have an impact on vibration interaction with structures such as large buildings and urban dwellings. This work looked at results measured for a previous conventionally (pyrotechnic) initiated blast in the area and compared it to the results obtained when the blast was modelled with electronic initiation and faster timings. The predicted peak particle velocity (PPV) and structural vibration factor (SVF) were calculated. From the results it was concluded that the investigation into using i-konTM electronic initiation system and SHOTPlus«-i blast design software had some real potential to improve blast vibration management on the cut back. The use of the electronic initiation system and complementary software allows intricate timing designs to be accurately placed into blasts. The system has a number of working modes that allow either the precise design timings to be logged automatically into each detonator or to be manually logged where a variation from the design exists. Where such variations from the design occur, the electronic system permits the actual timings used to be uploaded back into the design file. This allows both design and real actual timings to be stored for future analysis or reference.

The surface reactivity of underwater deposited, high-sulfide copper mine tailings was evaluated under fresh and saline water cover conditions by measuring the surface and pore water quality as a function of time. The experiments were conducted in aquarium type lysimeters having a shallow, well-aerated water cover up to approximately 0.25 m over the tailings. Natural lake water was used for the fresh water cover and seawater for the saline water cover scenarios. The tailings showed significant surface reactivity and oxidation under both fresh and saline water cover conditions. The surface water quickly became moderately to highly acidic, and surface oxidation of the tailings resulted in increased dissolution and release of sulfates, iron (total), calcium, magnesium, aluminium, manganese, copper, nickel, zinc, lead, cobalt and silicon to the water covers. A moderate to slightly increased loss of total sulfides, including pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite, occurred in the tailings surface layer to a very shallow depth. In comparison to the fresh water cover, the complete acidification of the saline water cover was delayed by approximately 30 - 40 days because of its additional available alkalinity. Whereas the rate of surface water acidification and release of aluminium and silicon were moderately reduced under saline water cover conditions in comparison to those for the fresh water cover, the release of calcium, magnesium, iron (total), copper, nickel, lead, zinc, sodium and potassium were enhanced. The mass transfer fluxes for dissolved copper, nickel lead, zinc and iron (total) from the tailings substrate to the surface water cover following surface water acidification were higher by 50 per cent or more in the saline water cover than those in the fresh water cover. This release was also reflected in moderate loss of pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite in the very shallow upper surface layer of the tailings at the tailings-water interface, although the loss of pyrite in the surface layer was less pronounced. In both cases, the dissolution of aluminosilicate minerals moderated, to a certain extent, pH and acidity in the water cover.

The evolution of the Oaky Creek mining complex provides a good example of the mining cycle in practice. Oaky Creek has been innovative in its choice of mining methods, with virtually the full range of coal mining methods having been used as workings have progressed down dip. The history of the mine is traced through its development (and ownership changes), progressive selection of mining methods as depths of cover to seams being mined have increased, and rehabilitation. This allows the different mining methods to be described and illustrates the concept of æwall-to-wall miningÆ.

Open cut mining in Australia is facing the greatest challenge in its history in attempting to compete not only with other operations internationally, but also with underground operations domestically. Most flat dip and shallow depth surface-mineable coal reserves have been depleted during the last two decades and new open cut operations must extract deeper coal deposits. As open cut coal mines move into deeper areas and the stripping ratios increase, the relative cost of overburden removal also increases. It therefore becomes even more important to design the mine around the optimum overburden removal scheme. The deeper mines are usually multi-seam operations with a more complex geology and with more geotechnical and hydrological problems. Deeper mines are subjected to greater problems requiring more detailed mine planning and design, such as selection of the optimum mining method and pit layout. In planning and design of such operations, the number of alternative methods which need to be considered is consequently greater.Dragline productivity and its stripping capabilities are directly affected by the selection of digging method, strip layout and pit geometry. Every mine has a unique combination of geological conditions. The operating methods that work well at one mine may not necessarily work at another site. Selection of an optimal stripping method, strip layout and pit geometry for a given dragline must be considered with respect to the geological conditions of the mine. With increasing geological complexity of Australian strip mines, it is becoming more important to use sophisticated techniques such as computerised mine planning methods to assist in optimising dragline operations.
