The geological and geotechnical conditions at the Cadia Hill Open Pit are very complex. This complexity coupled with high mining rates has required significant technical input into the design and optimisations of the pit slopes, accesses, cutbacks and scheduling. A multi-discipline team of NML engineers, geologists and external consultants has been conducting comprehensive geological and geotechnical programs in order to achieve an optimum design of the pit slopes. Extensive data collection, analysis and interpretation has led to the formation of working geotechnical models of large structures, rock masses, and back-analysed slope performance charts. The current Cadia Pit Optimisation Project focuses on the risk-and-return principle for pit design and on the integration of geotechnical, hydrogeological, mining engineering and scheduling. The risk management for pit design has also been incorporated into the short term and long-term operation of the pit mining to ensure safety and production.

The escalation of oil prices comiencing in 1973 meant that nickel laterite refineries using oil as an energy source were placed at distinct disadvantage relative to sulphide refineries or those with coal derived energy. The Queensland Nickel refinery commenced a construction programme; in 1980 to allow ore drying and power generation to be converted from oil to coal. Since late 1981 ore drying has been undertaken using heated air from two moving grate spreader grate stokers. The changeover from oil to coal drying proceeded without process disruptions. This paper discusses the plant changes required to allow the receipt of coal and the operating performance obtained from the coal fired air heaters.

For many years it was realised that the methods used for unloading concentrates at Port Pirie were inefficient and labour intensive, therefore, when a decision was reached to standardise the east-west rail link from Sydney to Perth, the opportunity was taken to consider entirely new schemes for the handling of concentrates at Broken Hill and Port Pirie. After considerable testing and investigation, it was decided to install a completely new concentrates handling plant incorporating a tippler at Port Pirieòto replace the previous long established methods of unloading and dis- tributing concentrates to the operating plant.and the shipping berths. To achieve this, wagons of concentrates from the various mines are marshalled in a set order at Broken Hill and conveyed to Port Pirie in 56-wagon trains. On arrival at Port Pirie, the wagons are checked and moved to a position where they come under the control of the automatic wagon marshalling equipment.

By designing comminution circuits for mineral liberation rather than the final recovery process and by using high mass pull gravity recovery, the concept of underground processing has become a reality. Gekko has found that many ores respond favourably to fine crushing with either high pressure grinding rolls or vertical shaft impactors which when combined with the InLine Pressure Jig gravity separator and coarse flotation results in a narrow, low-head, compact processing plant that can be sensibly fitted in existing underground openings. The focus on fine crushing reduces the power requirements of the plant to approximately 5 kWh/t for a capacity of up to 20 t/h run of mine ore feed. The use of water recycle systems places no extra load on the mineÆs normal water handling system. GekkoÆs underground processing plant, the æPythonÆ, has been designed to be towed down the decline or lowered down a shaft and is capable of being installed in sloping, non-linear drives for placement close to the working face. The overall benefit to mining companies of this concept has been estimated to be a significant operating cost-saving, lower cut-off grade and a significantly smaller environmental footprint.

A brief history of the development of pneumatic flotation cells from early in the 20th century to the present day and a comparison to conventional cells demonstrates the efficiency and simplicity of design and operation of the ænew generationÆ of pneumatic cells. Recent successful testwork on phosphate minerals in the USA and a variety of coal types in Australia confirm the utility and efficiency of the design. The key aspects of this technology are improved recovery and selectivity with lower capital expenditure and operating costs.

In order to make good decisions, as to whether large diameter raise bored shafts can be constructed in blocky rock at a particular location, mine planners, management, geotechnical engineers and contractors must understand and consider a range of geotechnical issues. Firstly, mine management must ensure that adequate time and resources are available to find appropriate shaft sites. Deep weathering, adverse structures, groundwater, etc might mean that the most desirable location, with respect to other mine development, might not be suitable. Special site investigation drilling, etc may be necessary. Even then, alternative construction options might be necessary, other than just reaming through to the surface. A site investigation borehole should then be drilled to investigate specific and general ground conditions along the raise alignment. Often, only small sections of weak blocky rock dictate raise stability. While the empirical McCracken and Stacey method is typically used in Australia to assess raise stability and assess geotechnical risk, until recently it had no published performance data.An Australian database of raise performance now exists and is presented below, courtesy of an industry survey by the Eastern Australian Ground Control Group. Raise diameter and ground conditions (in terms of a lower bound Qr value) is presented for 50 cases versus raise performance.

Today the application of computer programs for planning of mine-ventilation and for safety- analysis of ventilation systems is widespread practice in German mining. The computer program for network calculat- ion, developed at the "Mine Ventilation Testing Centre of the Westfalische Berggewerkschaft- skasse" allows the distribution of airflow and pressure in mines to be calculated. In a physically well founded manner it takes into account the natural ventilation as well as changes of volume-flow in the mine, which both are dependent on pressure and temperature. Compared to an incompressible treatment of the mine air these circumstances are of increasing importance with the increase of depth, air temperatures and fan-pressures'. This especial- ly holds for the calculation of airflows during failures of fans or for assessing the influence of open mine-fires on ventilation. The application of the program is very easy and its structure is made to fit the requirements of practice. For instance it takes into account the fan characteristics of all fans. Three polymers of varying chemistries and molecular weights have been used to depress talc in a model sulfide ore consisting of talc, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. Flotation testing revealed a distinct hierarchy of effectiveness of the polymers in the depression of talc (HP Starch > Polymer-H > Dextrin WY) but a different order of effectiveness for depression selectivity (Dextrin WY > Polymer-H > HP Starch). Adsorption isotherm determinations for the gangue and valuable mineral phases indicate that the differences in selectivity are partially due to adsorbed amount variations, with Dextrin WY adsorbing marginally less on the sulfides than Polymer-H. Contact angle measurements on packed particle beds have revealed that the polymers have differing abilities to reduce the contact angle of talc and the sulfide minerals. An explanation of the observed trends is given in terms of the binding mechanisms of the polymers on the talc and the sulfide mineral phases. Order of addition effects between collector and depressant were also investigated using adsorption isotherm determinations for the polymers in the presence of a pre-adsorbed layer of collector and vice versa. Adsorption of the polymers was not affected by the presence of the collector. Similar results were obtained for the adsorption of collector in the presence of pre-adsorbed layers of polymer.

This paper carries on from an earlier paper 'Cemented fill practice and research at Mount Isa' and reports further on the laboratory programme at Mount Isa to develop a cheap cem- ented fill using Company waste products. The practical economic significance of availability of cheap cementing agents is re- viewed, with the various alternative approaches available The basic approach adopted within this paper is that use of reactive pozzolans such as ground slags to replace a proportion of the Portland cement in the fill can make mining methods employing cemented fill more economic- ally competitive with other mining methods.

This paper will discuss the challenges and opportunities in the years 1998 to 2002 faced by the operation and personnel at Thalanga, and its continued survival through short life projects (three feasibilities in four years). It will describe the processing of the different ores, issues faced and operating and technical innovations that occurred during that period. This will include: commissioning on very high grade Cu ores, treatment of high Sulfur feed ores (~46 per cent S) and the effects of the installation of a Detritor Mill on the process.

In June 1995, BHP announced that it would build a Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) plant and associated beneficiation, materials handling and infrastructure facilities at Port Hedland, Western Australia. This plant, the first direct reduction plant in Australia, will convert beneficiated iron ore fines into metallic iron for briquetting into HBI. The reduction plant will be based on the FINMET fluid bed technology jointly developed by Fior de Venezuela and Voest-Alpine Industrienlagenbau. Electric Arc Furnace steelmakers in the Asia Pacific region will be the principal customers for the product. This paper presents an overview of the facilities to be constructed by the project as well as discussing some particular technology and design engineering issues associated with the project.

Many metallurgical beneficiation and primary concentrating processes rely upon discrimination of products from gangue based on particulate density of the different minerals and combinations of minerals in an ore. The basic definition of density is simple, but the apparent density that minerals exhibit when in the environment of commercial densimetric separation processes is more complex and is ill-defined. Measurement of the apparent density displayed by minerals in their separation situation is essential if modelling of plant performance is to be meaningful or when comparison of an existing operation with a æperfectÆ separation constitutes a part of an audit or of a plant control function. Seven methods of dividing ore samples into discreet density fractions are examined and criticised in this paper. The shortcomings, difficulties and potential errors arising from the use of each method are evaluated. Most of the techniques described have been used by the author and generally their faults are understood and the resultant first-hand experience has been used to overcome these faults. A simple new computer-assisted technique for developing meaningful densimetric data is described.

In a time of changing rainfall patterns and in the light of recent tailings dam failures, there is closer environmental scrutiny for proposed tailings dam construction or expansion. Therefore the elimination of the traditional tailings dam could provide both environmental and cost benefits to an operation. One method to dewater tails is using pressure filtration to achieve lower moistures than what is currently available using other dewatering technologies. Further benefits include a higher rate of filtrate recovery, reuse of waste material and the potential for dry stacking of the filtered tailings cake, thereby minimising both risk and cost. This paper chronicles the replacement of two existing belt filter presses with a single McLanahan recessed plate filter press to dewater a tailings stream at a Bacchus Marsh site. It covers the slurry testing, equipment selection, installation, commissioning and operation of the filter press to achieve the following objectives:• removing the current tailings dam and slimes cells from the existing process to minimise failure risk and reduce the cost of a dam upgrade, as well as operational and maintenance costs• free up the surface area which was previously occupied by tailings dams and slimes cells• recover additional water to be returned to the process• reduce flocculent usage• reduce truck movements and handling.The project’s owner also expects to reduce carbon emissions by over 3000 t over the lifetime of operation as well as substantially reducing operating expenditure. By recognising the carbon reduction benefits, the project owner was able to successfully achieve partial funding through the Voluntary Waste Industry Protocol.An unanticipated, but as yet unquantifiable, bonus for the project was to seek an offtake agreement for the tailings thereby allowing the tailings to be considered a valuable source of beneficiated clay suitable for the construction industry.CITATION:Godwin, P and Williams, R, 2017. Raiseboring is a technique that has become popular in modem mining engineering since the early 1960s. A study has been undertaken at the University of Queensland to determine important factors affecting the optimum diameter of raisebored shafts, excluding local parameters such as the maximwn excavation size that a particular rock type can safely accommodate.This model is used to examine each of these factors and the results indicate that the optimum diameter for raisebored shafts is generally between four and six metres.

The Civil Defence has provided shelters for more than 50% of the population. Some of these shelters are put into rock. Since rock installations give large resis- tance against weapon effects and also by advan- tage can be used for several purposes in peace- time, an interesting development has taken place the last decades. In towns and cities you will find sport halls, swimming pools, bowling and shooting ranges etc in rock, which easely can be conver- ted to civil defence shelters. An investigation into different aspects of importance in the understanding of explosibility of hybrid mixtures of coal dust, air and gases potentially found within mine workings through a comprehensive laboratory program of explosibility tests was conducted. Plotting of test results revealed that conditions of potential explosibility could be described using two dimensional flammability limit surfaces- for coal dust/oxygen; methane/oxygen; and coal dust/methane mixtures. From these plots, the three dimensional flammability envelopes defining the explosibility of the coal dust/methane/oxygen mixtures can be defined and illustrated for a coal sample. The surfaces of the three dimensional envelope describe limits which separate inert mixtures of coal dust and methane at varying oxygen levels from those concentrations which are ignitable under defined conditions. It is considered appropriate to generalise that the geometric shapes of these limit regions are applicable to all type classifications of coal dust. There are practical applications of these results to the underground environment.The action of free radical initiators in the propagation of a methane gas explosion was examined for its applicability to the flammability of coal dust/gas/air mixtures. The oxides of nitrogen or NO x radicals have influence upon the lean limits of flammability of hybrid mixtures and this is illustrated by use of three dimensional coordinate geometry. Gases can be introduced to the underground environment through the exhaust gases of diesel equipment. It is concluded that radical species can substantially increase the flammability of gas and dust flames and as a consequence raise risk of mine atmosphere explosibility.

This paper provides a brief historical review of the invention of the spiral separator and its adoption into Australian metallurgical practice. The purpose of the review is to demonstrate that spiral development to date appears to have been a largely empirical process, and that the cur- rent resurgence of interest in the spiral, especially in the coal industry, warrants an increased fundamental research effort. Current research work concentrating on empirical modelling is outlined, while some preliminary experimental results of a more fundamental nature are presented and some research of other disciplines interested in particle transport introduced in order to stimulate further work and discussion.

Factors influencing Cost, systems available for transporting minerals, particularly on land, and methods used for comparing costs are reviewed. A case study presents comparative costs graphically for coal haulage, assumed in Queensland, by 31-6" gauge rail, belt conveyor, 120 ton road train, slurry pipeline, and transmission of electrical energy by transmission line. The effect on comparative results of alternative methods of including initial capital and capital replacement costs is considered and approximate break-even points between systems, bearing in mind the assumptions taken, are discussed.

The recent drought has highlighted the finite nature of AustraliaÆs divertible water resources. According to AustraliaÆs recently completed National Land and Water Resources Audit, development of water resources in southern Australia has reached or exceeded sustainable extraction limits. Similarly, 161 out of 538 groundwater management units are either totally allocated or already over allocated. Whilst mining only uses about three per cent of diverted water resources, water scarcity may be a major factor that determines whether potential mines can be developed in the future. Furthermore, the development of extraction and processing facilities that limit water use and maximise the re-use the waste water streams will be even more fundamental features of the mining industry in the 21st century than they are at present. There are encouraging examples where innovative water re-use technologies are significantly reducing the water used per unit of mined product. Whilst mining in the areas of Australia draining to the tropical seas may be less constrained by a current lack of water (60 per cent of divertible water resources drain into the Timor Sea, Gulf of Carpentaria and north east Coral Sea), it is highly probable that there will be increasing demand for these waters from the irrigation industry, whilst pressure will also be applied to ensure that environmental flows that benefit the coastal fishing and prawn industries are maintained. In the Great Artesian Basin, current research is demonstrating that the groundwaters are being recharged at rates considerably lower than current extraction. Whilst some other groundwater basins in arid and semi-arid Australia have currently untapped resources, these water are often relatively saline and/or may be intimately linked with key ecosystems in discharge areas. This paper presents an overview of the current state of our water resources and examines some of the key water use issues including allocation, use and reuse, environmental flows and competing demands on the resource that will ensure that water issues remain high on the policy agenda for mining, irrigation and other water users.
