of the multitude of physiographic problems of immediate interest in volcanic terranes, it is the origin of the magma forming the magnificent volcanoes that is perhaps the most mysterious. Unlike anywhere else on earth, the possible locations of magma production beneath the convergent margins are strongly limited in depth and areal extent. Yet the exact process by which magma is produced still stands elusive, even in light of tremendous gains in analytical and physical insight. The principal aim here is to discuss some of what has been revealed about the physics and chemistry of the origin and evolution of island are magmas.

The Miitel nickel sulfide deposit has been overprinted by a family of late stage structures that have acted as conduits for fluids that have contaminated the orebody with arsenic minerals. This has resulted in highly variable and unpredictable arsenic grades throughout the Miitel orebody. The ore produced from Miitel is processed under a toll-treatment agreement with Western Mining Resources Kambalda Nickel Concentrator. Part of this arrangement includes a financial penalty if monthly average arsenic grades in ore delivered exceed 800 ppm. This constraint has provided an extra challenge to the Miitel mine geologist in addition to daily underground duties. Routine development and stope mapping, close spaced sampling and cross-sectional interpretation were used in building an understanding of the structural controls of arsenic mineralisation and ore repetition at the Miitel nickel mine, and in providing maximum input to mine planning and scheduling. The distribution of structures responsible for arsenic introduction is now well understood from detailed mapping, sampling, and interpretation. By applying these insights to mine scheduling, the operation has successfully managed arsenic levels within the required specifications. Geological mapping has also improved the understanding of the structural complexity of the ore deposit, leading to the addition of ore tonnes and an increased confidence in resource modelling. Regular sampling and tight controls on data quality provided confidence in a strongly skewed arsenic data set. Multiple Indicator Kriging has been used for resource estimation of the arsenic contaminated nickel ore since it allows explicit control of the spatial influence of extreme grades in the positively skewed arsenic sample population. Both the grade control and exploration data sets are used to model the arsenic distribution.

Two industrial case studies in which detailed investigation of the flow behaviour of mineral slurries is used to assess the feasibility of pipeline solid transport are described. The first example deals with the pumping of highly concentrated bauxite tailings to disposal, while the second exam- ple examines the possibility of transporting high-density Victorian brown coal slurries which previously has been thought as uneconomical. It is demonstrated that these typical solid handling problems can be solved by a good understanding of the rheology of suspensions.

The Collinsville Coal Measures consist mainly of arenaceous sediments but indude eleven named coal seams. The Formation outcrops around the northern end of tbe Bowen Basin where it attains a thickness of 700 ft. in the Collinsville-Scottville area and overlies Lower Bowen Volcanies with angular unconformity. Most of the members in the Formation thicken basinwards. The regional dip is about 8 degrees. The Formation thins southwards and does not occur south of the Bowen River on the eastern flank. On the western flank it is represented by 60 ft. of barren sandstone at the limit of our mapping, 12 miles south of the Bowen River. Two seams are mined, the Bowen and the Blake; coal from the former produces high grade metallurgical coke, and the latter seam is mined for steaming coal. Where mined, the seams are about 20 ft. thick. The coals are of medium volatile bituminous rank and the lower coals are of higher rank than those above them.Reverse faults striking across the Coal Measures have been delineated and the existence of areas of intrusive rocks has been established. Intrusions rose up fault planes and, as felspar porphyry sills, selectively intruded coal seams, decimating reserves of coalavailable for mining. One sill, in the Blake Seam, attains a known thickness of 115 ft. Because the distribution and thickness of the sills is rarely predictable, density of drilling has been greater than in most coalfields.INTRODUCTIONThe assemblage of sediments occupying the northern portion of the Bowen Basin (Fig. 1) may be divided into four formations of Permian age:The Upper Coal Measures (U. Bowen)The Middle Bowen Marine Beds (M. Bowen)The Collinsville Coal Measures (M. Bowen)The Lower Bowen Volcanics (L. The dilution of blasted ore with cemented backfill materials has been recognised as a significant factor influencing the economics of some underground metalliferous mining operations. Several mechanisms have heen identified as possible causes of fill failures. The purpose of this study was to determine the possibility of damage as the result of one mechanism, that of production blasting adjacent to bodies of cemented hydraulic fill (CHF). A vibration amplitude transfer function has been developed to model the transmission of blast vibrations from the source, through ore, across the ore to CHF interface and into the CHF mass. The model may be applied in the near field. The model has permitted estimation of vibration amplitude at a point in a CHF mass, to which damage criteria may be applied. A number of assumptions and simplifications have been made to render the problem relatively tractable. Ore and CHF material characteristics recorded by a number of authors were utilised to formulate preliminary damage estimations. A simple application of the amplitude transfer model indicated that a zone of plastically deformed CHF would be produced, and would extend to a distance of approximately 0.5 metres from the interface into the CHF. A sensitivity analysis was also conducted, that indicated that the zone of plastic deformation would be more extensive given appropriate conditions. Recommendations for further model development and future laboratory and field investigations have been made.

Gold mineralisation at Wapolu lies within an exposed arcuate zone at the decollement contact between a basement dome of high grade metamorphics and an overlying ophiolite sequence. This contact was originally a thrust fault which has since become a decollement zone for gravity sliding in association with basement doming. Hydrothermal models for the gold mineralisation postulate an epithermal system in which fluids were channelled up the decollement with boiling of those fluids causing hydrothermal brecciation and subsequent gold deposition. The alteration assemblages, fluid inclusion data and geochemistry indicate that the upper levels of the system are exposed.

A high horizontal stress field has significant effect on the stability of underground roadways and influences the design of a support system in this environment. The high horizontal stresses at E1lalong Colliery, NSW, Australia provided the environment for this study. Samples of coal measures 'rock were collected and tested to determine their mechanical properties. The lithology, stress state, geometry and conditions prevailing in particular areas of the mine were obtained from geotechnical reports available at the mine and by field observation. The results of a series of finite element models constructed and tested under various conditions provided a basis for comparison with field observations. Analysis of the results indicated sufficient correspondence to provide a basis for the proposed design of an optimum support system. It is not suggested that finite analysis provides 'exact answers', but it does show the relative importance and interaction of various parameters.

The use of stable isotopic measurements as a technique for elucidating the origin and history of the water in hydrothermal fluids is relatively new. Recent studies have emphasized the importance of meteoric water in the formation of many hydrothermal ore deposits including many epithermal gold-base metal deposits which occur in faulted volcanic terrane. Other vein-type gold ores are be- lieved to have formed from fluids of magmatic or metamorphic origin and exhibit characteri stic 6180 values. These values also give information regarding temperatures and the degree of equilibrium. Preliminary oxygen data for some important gold deposits of eastern Australia are evaluated in the con- text of styles of mineralization.

The occurrence of metallic minerals in Australia to the time of the proclamation of South Australia as a Colony in 1836 was unknown. It is, therefore, perhaps, surprising that British settlers arriving in the Coromandel included among their number a German scientist Johannes Menge who had been appointed by the South Australian Company to the post of Mine and Quarry Agent and Geologist on 1 July 1836. His instructions were to `explore the natural productions of the Colony above and below ground and to superintend the working of quarries of stone and slate, the boring for water, metal, lead, coal and other mines at a salary of ú150 per annum for one year and for as much longer as the Company require your services not however exceeding five years'. In the event, he was to have little influence on those matter.

BHP Diamonds and their joint-venture participants DiaMet Minerals, Chuck Fipke and Stewart Blusson are currently developing Canada's first commercial diamond mine in the arctic barren lands of the Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada. The paper reviews the early history of the project leading up to the discovery of the first kimberlite pipe in September 1991, diamond exploration techniques and the subsequent advanced exploration and development work carried out at the site. In many aspects, this exploration work represented a development project in itself. Coinciding with the advanced exploration work, the project team prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and went through federal review of the project at the highest level. Understanding how ore interacts with flux particles at elevated temperatures to create molten slag is crucial since it governs the dynamics of a chemical reaction. This study explores the smelting behaviour of pre-reduced Nchwaning manganese ore when combined with lime, with the objective of examining the evolving interaction between pre-reduced ore particles and lime over time. The research sheds light on the interaction between solid and liquid and the phases that emerge during this process. To achieve this, a sessile drop furnace was employed to rapidly heat the materials positioned adjacent to each other on an alumina substrate and to observe the smelting process as it unfolded over time. This method allowed for the direct observation of the melting temperatures and the flux-ore reaction progression rate, and the potential disruptive events that might occur. By comparing the molten interfaces of the fluxed materials at various time intervals, this study provides insights into the relative rate of slag formation from the two materials. The results indicate that the main slag formation initiated at approximately 1400°C and continued to advance with time, with complete mixing occurring around 1500°C. The possible phases formed were identified using Scanning Electron Microscopy and modelled using Fact Sage thermodynamic software. In addition, the iron particles in the pre-reduced Mn ore were separated and settled from a rich MnO-containing slag. It was found that the separation of molten iron droplets from the slag depends on the rate of solid MnO particles dissolution into the adjacent slag phase.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore initiated a program in January 1995 at the Mt Whaleback operation in Newman, Western Australia to develop a closure plan for the overburden storage areas (OSA), which have the potential to generate acid rock drainage. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long-term performance of OSAs with respect to slope stability, surface run-off, erosion, water infiltration and vegetation. The objective is to control acid rock drainage by preventing moisture movement into and through the OSA material. Infiltration to the underlying OSA material and closure costs are minimised due to the presence of the run-of-mine (ROM) cover material. A summary of the field data is presented to illustrate low percolation rates to the underlying OSA and key performance characteristics of the moisture store and release cover system design. Field data collected to date demonstrates that a moisture store and release cover system constructed with suitable ROM material has good potential as a final cover system at the Mt Whaleback site. The performance of the cover system on a sloped surface was significantly different as compared to placing the cover system on a horizontal surface.

The use of red sand as fine aggregate in concrete manufacture has been investigated as well as the use of fly ash as a cement replacement. The experimental work consisted of casting various concrete mixes including a control and comparing standard properties. Properties tested included compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, water permeability, chloride diffusion, pH dependence leaching and particle morphology. The results show that the concrete strength is not significantly affected when natural sand is replaced completely with red sand. The durability tests indicated high water permeability and high chloride diffusion due to the porosity of the red sand concrete, likely due to the low slump value. Leaching tests did not exceed New South Wales EPA guidelines.

Approval to operate Longwall No. 7 at Appin Colliery in 1979 was granted pursuant not only to the usual statutory provisions, but also that an adequate means of drainage of methane gas be incorporated. A methane drainage plant was subsequently designed and constructed some two km from the pit top at the site of the Colliery main upcast and down cast shafts. Modern plants of this nature are completely automated using programmable controllers and computers to provide control and management reporting functions. Complex mechanical systems are installed to extract the gas and in handling and storage processes. Gas utilisation plants exist which can generate power from methane. These plants are further enhanced by harnessing waste heat produced in the generation process. The installation, automation control and monitoring of these plants incorporates many facets of engineering from high voltage power supply and computer technology to complex gas handling procedures used in gas compression storage.and generation of electric power.

In November, 1967, a four strand curved mould continuous casting machine coupled with a 50 ton basic oxygen furnace began producing billets for the rod mill and new merchant mill at the Newcastle Steelworks. To date over 500,000 tons of carbon and alloy steels have been cast at the rate of 20,000 tons per month, the major part for the wire industry. Many alterations have been made to the plant to simplify the process, improve quality and increase production. Casting parameters have been developed for each different type of steel. The quality of the final product has been influenced most by casting temperature, secondary cooling and casting speed. All these factors have been controlled and good results are reproduced. More exacting requirements of liquid steel quality have brought about the use of higher lime/silica ratio slags during steelmaking to control phosphorus revers- ions and standard ladle additions of manganese suicide and ferro aluminium for more effective deoxidation.

The Jabiluka uranium mine was constructed in the Ngarradj catchment, a right bank tributary of Magela Creek in the Northern Territory. The Jabiluka Mineral Lease is adjacent to Kakadu National Park, near an area listed as Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention and recognised under the World Heritage Convention. In the late dry season of 1998 and prior to the 1998 - 1999 wet season, a stream-monitoring program was implemented in the Ngarradj catchment to collect baseline data on sediment transport within the catchment to assess and proactively manage associated impacts caused by mining at Jabiluka. Stream suspended mud concentration, stream discharge and rainfall data were collected for four wet seasons (1998 - 2002) giving an almost continuous data set. The stream system has high natural variability dependent on rainfall intensity and subsequent discharge and pre-wet season fire distribution and intensity. In general, mud concentration is elevated at the commencement of the wet season until about February. This is caused by first-flush removal of surface material detached during the dry season by agents such as bioturbation (including anthropogenic activity), wind erosion and surface desiccation. Water quality trigger values downstream of the mine were derived using upstream percentiles and the before-after-control-impact, paired site design. Both analyses showed no observable impact from mine construction in 1998 or during the study period. However, the impacts of dry season fires could be clearly detected. The data set provides good baseline information for future assessment at Jabiluka and demonstrates the need to view measured parameter values on a catchment-wide basis with knowledge of rainfall, discharge and fire distribution.

This paper presents an economic study comparing two gold recovery processes, zinc precipitation (Merrill-Crowe) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). Capital, operating, and gold losses costs from an actual CIP plant study are compared to costs developed from a hypothetical Merrill-Crowe process flowsheet. ' Results indicate an overall economic advantage to CIP over Merrill-Crowe for plants processing slurries within the range of the five gold solution grades selected for this study.

Ore control systems at Ridgeway have been designed to deliver gold and copper metal production through focussing on the ore characteristics that impact on mine and mill performance and ultimately metal delivery. This is achieved using data collection and management systems which allow data to be collected digitally with æat captureÆ validation routines. This data forms the basis of forecasting systems which aim to accurately assess local in situ and drawn ore characteristics. Physical attributes of ore such as draw characteristics, brow conditions and visual grade estimation are rountinely recorded. Ore tracking and accounting systems monitor gold and copper grade, copper mineralogy, host lithology and ore sizing. These have material impacts on concentrator throughput and metal recovery. Routine reconcilation and check sampling allow calibration of these systems.

Carbothermic reduction of iron oxide is an attractive mechanism to produce metallic iron, since it can directly utilise coal as both reductant and fuel. To improve energy efficiency and productivity of the metallic iron production based on this mechanism, the combustion bed process packed with the composites of iron oxide and coal powder was experimentally evaluated. The process has a potential of high heat efficiency since it can automatically utilise the heat of reduced materials as that necessary to the subsequent reduction of the composite by a large heat exchange rate between the packed particles and gas flowed across the bed. However, it is hard to perfectly prevent the reoxidation of formed metallic iron in the bed. The present paper reports the effect of coal content, pellet size and so forth on the reduction/metallisation degrees of the samples after the reduction experiment. It also discusses the effect of pretreatment of the composite pellets using CaO bearing materials to suppress the reoxidation of formed metallic iron in the bed.

Commercial operation of the Sherritt Gordon process in Australia for the leaching of nickel sulphides has promoted an investi- gation of the factors which influence extraction kinetics. This portion of the investigation has been directed towards the physical and chemical nature of the concentrate and the physical evi- dence of the mode of extraction. Details of the particle size distribution, mineral composition and chemical composition are given. The dis- tribution of various minerals in different size fractions and magnetic fractions is discussed. An electron microprobe was used to determine the composition of individual grains in the concentrate. The solid residue from an ammonia oxi- dation leach was subjected to microphotograph- ic examination, X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning by an electron microprobe. Clear evidence was obtained for a shrinking core mode of kinetic extraction with an amorphous iron oxide product layer contrary to previous reports that the latter is pseudomorphic with the original mineral.
