The thickener overflow of zinc concentrate, obtained from flotation process in the Angouran plant located in Iran, contains a large quantity of slimes which were transferred to the tailing ponds. These slimes have caused problems of storing and environmental aspects in the Angouran area. The objective of this research is to describe the extraction of zinc from these slimes by leaching method using sulfuric acid in pilot plant scale.Chemical analyses showed that these tailing materials contain 35 per cent of zinc. By XRD analysis, smithsonite is identified as the major constituent. Calcite, dolomite, and cerussite are found as carbonate minerals. A minimal amount of Zn occurs as hemimorphite. Quartz, kaolinite, clinochlore and muscovite are other silicate minerals in the slimes.In the optimal conditions, ie acid leach at pH of 1, temperature of 55¦C, reaction time of 120 minutes and solid-liquid ratio of 1:3 and neutralisation with Ca(OH)2 at pH = 4.5, temperature = 70¦C, time = 90 minutes, the total recovery of zinc obtained was 95 per cent.

A sample of tailings from a local, low grade (less than 2g/t) tailings dump was investigated for gold recovery. The tailings were very fine, with 90 per cent passing 30¦m and almost 60 per cent passing 10¦m. Tabling the coarse product from classification using a cyclone proved unsuccessful, with low recoveries being obtained due to high gold losses in the slime streams. Gold recovery by cyanide leaching was quite rapid, with recoveries of 85-90% being obtained in five hours. Lime and cyanide consumptions were 3 g/t and 0.1 kg/t respectively. Gold loading onto carbon was inhbited by the presence of the large amount of fines, so heap and vat leaching should be considered where the gold is recovered from a clear pregnant solution. Settling tests were conducted on tailings. It was observed that the addition of at least 3 kg/t lime or 0.4 kgh nonionic flocculant was necessary to promote settling of the tailings to generate a clear supernatant for gold and water recovery.

Natroalunite is one of colouring minerals in kaolin. In this investigation, natroalunite, on which Ca(II) was adsorbed, was flocculated by HPAM and kaolin was depressed in suspension. The adsorption of Ca(II) on the natroalunite surface was studied by zeta-potential measurement and Auger Electron Spectroscopy analysis. Ca(II) was adsorbed more on the natroalunite surface than on the kaolin surface. The mechanism of Ca(II) adsorption was considered to be chemical adsorption on natroalunite and to be physical adsorption on kaolin. It has been found that Na6P6O18 and Na2Si04 can strongly affect Ca(II) adsorption on the surface of kaolin, but weakly on the surface of natroalunite. The effects of degree of hydrolysis and the molecular weight of HPAM, the effect of pH and the effect of Ca(II) have been studied. The kaolin ore, containing SO3 1.05 per cent has been processed with this method. The products only containing S03 0.36 per cent and the weight ratio of concentrate 52.27 per cent were Obtained.

This paper is intended to help design engineers, operating staff and plant managers understand the principles of metallurgical gas handling systems design. It also explains operating, safety and energy savings issues that the designer should take into consideration in the design of process off-gas systems for sulfide smelters. Primary smelting reactors, converters, and other off-gas sources impose challenging duty requirements on the various components of the gas handling systems. This paper reviews the design of common system components including the hood for gas capture at the system inlet, gas conditioning, gas cleaning, ductwork, dampers, hot gas fans, and the appropriate use of instrumentation and controls. The engineer must also be aware of how ductwork system effects and heat losses influence system performance. Also, the analysis of a recently-designed gas handling system will be reviewed, which includes high-strength SO2 gas from a smelting reactor, asymmetrically located Peirce-Smith converters, and a gas mixing chamber to mix the gases before they are sent to two acid plants of different sizes.

The precious metallogenic belt and its geoloqical-tectonic location in eastern China.The precious metallogenic belt of eastern China is located in the western part of the Pacific gold metallogenic belt, and occurs in the upper levels of the continent cut by a deep fault structure tending NNE and NE, and active during the Mesozoic. The precious metallogenic period ranges mainly from Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (160 Ma-110 Ma); subordinate mineralisation occurred during the Hercynian period, and was rare in the proterozoic.Seven precious metallogenic belts are recognised from east to west, i.e. from continent to the margin active belts, as follows:1. DEFINING AN ECONOMIC TARGETExploration usually begins with the corporate goal of finding a minimum tonnage and grade of a selected mineral. Sometimes this is expressed more simply as a minimum quantity of contained metal without any indication of the desired grade or implied profitability. Such a goal is useful in the selection of exploration areas and the planning of initial drilling programs. However, it should be reviewed as soon as significant mineralisation has been identified. To make rational decisions about exploration expenditure, the potential return from a deposit must be estimated from the outset and re-esti-mated frequently.The potential return will depend on:1. The proportion of mineral which can be economically recovered from the deposit by mining (the mining recovery).2. The quantity of valuable constituent that can be recovered after dilution with waste rock during mining and losses due to incomplete metallurgical recovery.3. Expectations of price and markets.4. Capital and operating costs applying to the selected mining and processing methods, and to transportation and marketing. Increasingly, environmental costs and constraints must also be considered.

The Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF) was developed in Britain during the 1950's as a process which could produce zinc from a blast furnace. Since then it has evolved into an efficient means of producing zinc and lead from lower grade raw materials, both of primary and secondary origin. These changes have been in response to the need to improve the cost competitive position of the ISF in a climate of decreasing metal prices. The improvements at the Cockle Creek smelter of Sulphide Corporation Pty Limited have resulted from work undertaken in four main areas: 1. Changes in plant design and operating practice to give more stable furnace operation. 2. Improvements to the quality of sinter being charged to the furnace. 3. Improved monitoring of process variables and the formulation of control strategies based on the improved data. 4. Increased understanding of the processes occuring within the furnace shaft to allow predictive modelling to be undertaken. Work in these areas is still progressing but the work to date has resulted in a significant improvement in the production rate and efficiency of operation.

The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of milling and flotation circuit configuration on flotation performance of platinum-bearing ore from the UG2 reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. Pilot plant trials were conducted at Lonmin Platinum using a highly automated pilot plant (a floatability characterisation test rig or FCTR), with a pilot ball mill, a stirred media detritor and an ISA mill. Different milling and flotation configurations were tested, without changing the overall grind size distribution or flotation residence time from one circuit to the next. Results from the pilot plant tests indicate that staged grinding, with intermediate flotation stages, can achieve significant performance benefits in comparison to a single grind-float circuit, for an equivalent overall grind and flotation residence time. These findings are explored qualitatively, in terms of the recovery and transportation of fast, slow and non-floating platinum-bearing particles through the various milling and flotation stages, and an optimum strategy for the separation of this type of ore is explored and discussed.

The Archean geological sequence in the West Pilbara region (Fig 1), a deformed greenstone volcano-sedimentary succession regionally intruded by layered mafic/ultramafic lopoliths, batholithic granites, granite stocks and transected by swarms of dolerite dykes, has prompted several companies to search for a variety of base metals and and platinoids (Fig 2). In the first instance, detailed aeromagnetic surveying was completed, producing patterns of marked magnetic anomalism which proved substantially successful in the demarcation of areas warranting geological reconnaissance and detailed follow-up. Revelant to this paper were the obvious magnetic features overlying outcropping and buried mafic/ultramafic bodies which ultimately were proven to be host to Ni-Cu sulphides, pgm, Ti, V, Cr and, more recently, Ag and Au mineralisation. Routine stream sediment, soil sampling and ground geophysical techniques of the day appear, in most cases, to have been adequate in the detection of mineralisation, except in the case of Radio Hill massive sulphides where the Turam E.M. (1972) signal essentially failed to detect the blind conductor (Peters, de Angelis 1987).

Mining and petroleum continue to be the two most vita components of our nation's development, says Sir Julius Char in the Australian Journal of Mining (Nov-Dec 1996). In fact the} account for 71.6% of export earnings, and 21.2% of Gros; Domestic Product in Papua New Guinea. The Misima and Porger, Mines, along with the Kutubu oil project, have essentially rescues PNG's economic viability since the loss of income from Panguna Though the industry cannot create employment in the manner o. intensive industries such as agriculture, it does provid( opportunities to local communities in terms of jobs, financia compensation, and infrastructure. Many ventures take many years and enormous capital investment to set up. There are three phases: exploration, feasibility, an( operations. The operations phase sees a massive development o infrastructure, or the actual `building' of the mine. For mining companies to commit to such lengthy time frames and high level: of investment, without returns, requires confidence and a degree of commitment from government on a number of levels - legislative stability, monitoring social development, and the provision o social infrastructure.

The concentrator at Bougainville Copper Limited has an annual throughput of 48.2 million tonnes/year producing approximately 175,000 tonnes copper, 16.1 tonnes gold, and 50 tonnes silver. Conventional three stage crushing and screening are used to reduce run of mine ore to an average product d80 size of 6.7mm. The primary objective of the crush- ing plant is to provide a continuous supply of ore to the 12 primary grind- ing mills via an intermediate 300,000 tonnes capacity stockpile. Since ball mill performance improves with decreasing mill feed size, the crushing plant continually strives to produce the finest possible product for mill- ing. This has been achieved by increasing plant availability and total installed power, and improving crusher manganese liner life, screen cloth life, and plant operating practices. A recent innovation was the installa- tion of a 35 million tonnes/year preconcentration screening plant in Janu- ary 1987 to recover high grade fines from low grade run of mine ore types in which the mineralisation occurs preferentially along fracture planes in the parent rock.

In underground ore mining of copper ore, lead-zinc ore, tin ore and fluorspare in German Democratic Republic geological situation is characterized by ore deposits of small thickness and great variability of ore grades and mining conditions. For long range mining strategy and short-term planning of production a model was developed fitting to make optimal economic mining decisions. Starting point of the model is a cost function representing all direct costs per unit recoverable metal in concentrate for each stoping unit (ore reserve block). In the costs function the results of regression analysis of ore grade and metal recovery in concentration plant were considered. All stoping units (ore reserve blocks) of a mine were arranged to growing direct costs. The relationships of recoverable metal, ore tonnages and corresponding costs were plotted in a diagram. The data processed by- computer and the graphic representation of the results make possible 1. economic evaluation of stopes and ore reserve blocks, 2. estimation of cut off grade, 3. optimization of works planning.

I am honoured, deeply honoured, that so distinguished a group has assembled to acknowledge the signifi- cance of the work of my Melbourne flotation research laboratory, to review progress since Principles of Flotation (Wark, 1938) was published, to highlight the present state of knowledge, and to point the way for future research. The flotation research which began in 1929 was sponsored by a group of mining companies2 at the instigation of Harry Hey of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited. There were never more than three of us work- ing in rather cramped conditions in a laboratory made available by the Department of Chemistry at the Uni- versity of Melbourne, but what we lacked in space was more than offset by a freedom unparalleled in indus- trial research in Australia at that time. I pay special tribute to my first colleague, Alwyn Cox; to my wife who worked with us for several years; and to Keith Sutherland who followed Cox in 1936. They were my sole colleagues up to 1938 when Principles of Flo- tation (Wark, 1938) was published.

The amount of raw material used in the production of cement can be reduced by partially supplementing it by pozzolanic waste material without changing its properties negatively. This paper discusses results of an investigation using slag from the Pt industry, from the production of steel using Midrex processes as well as fly ashes from different coal power plants in South Africa. These are blended in a 20 per cent slag or fly ash to 80 per cent cement ratio. The properties of the mixtures depend on the phase composition, chemistry, grain size and the sources of the materials. The results are promising, but show variable behaviour depending on slag and cement composition. Compressive strength tests as well have heat flow curves showing the hydration behaviour, indicating that 20 per cent addition of slag or fly ash to ordinary Portland cement is viable. There is a large potential to use slag in cement mixtures and this study can be used to develop cements that will positively influence CO2 emissions and help to reduce large slag and fly ash stockpiles.

Estimation of productivity is a key factor in the design of hydraulic mines and in assessing their economic feasibility. A published Russian formula for hydraulic mining monitor cutting rates overstated productivity by up to 2 tonnes per minute (251%) when applied to Solid EnergyÆs hydraulic mines. A new formula, taking into account additional productivity factors, was derived by Solid Energy and produced an acceptable correlation between predicted and actual cutting rates inNew Zealand and overseas hydraulic mines, with an average error of approximately 0.1 tonnes per minute.   Another key factor in hydraulic mine design is the transport of coal slurry via flumes. Solid Energy carried out a series of 80 full scale tests in a surface flume installation, varying the gradient and coal:water ratio. Both steel flumes and plastic-lined flumes were evaluated. A modification of the Chezy Open Channel Flow formula, including a factor for slurry density, gave a reasonable correlation between actual and predicted flows. It is believed that this Solid Energy formula is suitable for the design of flume installations for hydraulic mining.

Rock and coal fractures together with micro seismic vibration is a common occurrence during mining, however, it is very uncommon for coal and rock to be propelled into the roadway. Irrespective, such occurrences do occur and appear to require significantly more energy than is available from strain energy release during coal cutting. The sources of energy which can contribute to the propulsion of coal from the face or ribs are typically strain energy from the surrounding ground, seismic energy from a rapid rupture of the ground in the vicinity, or rapid expansion of gas from within the burst source area. The aim of this presentation is to briefly review the mechanics of a coal burst and to discuss the mining situations for which the energy is sufficient to create bursts. Economic and environmental pressures are shifting the world balance of titanium dioxide production away from sulphate based. manufacture towards the more cost effective and cleaner chloride route. In the chloride process for titanium dioxide pigment manufacture, TiOz and other metal oxides in the feed ore are reacted at high temperature with chlorine in the presence of carbon. These gases are cooled after they leave the reaction zone, upon which solid contaminants precipitate and are substantially removed. The liquid titanium tetrachloride is purified by distillation before again being vaporised and interacting with hot oxygen to form pigmentary titanium dioxide and regenerate chlorine for recycle. The base pigment is wet milled, surface treated (by coating with hydrous oxides of silica, alumina and others) and redispersed before packaging. Optical properties of TiO2 pigments are reviewed and the role of refractive index and particle size explained in brief. Pigment related factors affecting the opacity, colour, undertone, gloss and durability of coatings are examined with respect to manufacturing requirements. The superior performance of chloride based pigments is briefly reviewed.

The New Zealand (NZ) Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route, a 47 km north–south motorway alternative to Stage Highway 1. The project is being delivered by the Well-Connected Alliance comprising the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Obayashi Corporation, Parsons Brinckerhoff NZ, Beca Infrastructure and Tonkin & Taylor.The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway, nearly half of it underground connecting State Highway 20 (SH20) to State Highway 16 (SH16). The underground portion of the project incorporates twin 13.2 m inside diameter (ID) tunnels 2.4 km long, each carrying three traffic lanes, one for north-bound traffic and one for south-bound traffic. The tunnels are being driven by a 14.46 m outside diameter (OD) 2400 t, tunnel boring machine (TBM) shield that was assembled and launched at the southern portal. It will be turned and re-launched at the northern portal for the return drive to the southern portal where it will be disassembled. This paper presents two major temporary works elements contributing to the successful launch of the TBM: the TBM assembly crane platform and the TBM shove frame and associated components.Tunnel boring machine shield assembly – crane platformThe TBM shield was delivered to site in subassemblies ranging in weight from 100 to 380 t. It was initially proposed to use a 750 t crawler crane sitting above the tunnel portal headwall to assemble and disassemble the TBM. However, this did not have sufficient capacity to allow the TBM shield to advance clear of the tunnel before disassembly commences. To reduce the crane’s working radius a temporary steel crane platform was developed that is supported on the side walls of the tunnel approach trench. This has enabled a smaller, less expensive, 600 t crawler crane to be used and will allow the TBM shield to clear the tunnel before disassembly.Tunnel boring machine launch – temporary worksTo launch the TBM a purpose built steel frame was required for the TBM thrust rams to react against. The shove frame had to be able to transfer the thrust loads from the TBM shield to the ground below and thrust wall behind. A range of potential thrust loads and jacking patterns were examined to develop the design load cases for the shove frame. The shove frame was used to launch the TBM at the southern portal and to re-launch it at the northern portal. Elements of the shove frame will also be used to support the portal faces during the TBM arrivals.CITATION:Kubik, D and The, K, 2014. For a hydrocyclone of fIXed geometry, DC, Di, DO and ? are constants, the variable parameters affecting the performance are Qi, Fi, Du and H. (See Appendix 2 for definition of symbols).The relationship between d50c, Qi, Fi, Du and H gives models which can effectively be used for performance predictions. Such models have already been established by Lynch et al and by Plitt.These models have been tried in a limited manner under continuous operating conditions for on-line cowol. For on-line control effective and accurate instrumentation is required for which a new set up is proposed. Using this set up, a new model was established. A feature in this model is that deviations from the norm of operational parameters affecting d50c were considered. It is shown that these deviations generated by the disturbance of one or more of variations in the parameters, can be monitored by a computer and suitable signals generated to control servo mechanisms for restoring the required d50c value.The logic followed in developing the computer software is described and the application of the model is indicated.

In the world-class mining district of Morococha, epithermal polymetallic replacement bodies and veins overprint porphyry mineralisation and skarns related to subvolcanic intrusions of Miocene age, thus indicating ore formation in two different environments, separated in time or forming a continuum. The district covers an area of about 70 km2 in the north-western part of the Domo de Yauli complex in theWestern Cordillera of central Peru and is part of the Miocene polymetallic belt, also hosting the deposits of Colquijirca (Bendez· et al, 2008b) and Cerro de Pasco (Baumgartner, FontbotT and Vennemann, 2008). Multiple late-Miocene porphyry stocks intruded Permian, Triassic-Jurassic and late-Cretaceous sedimentary carbonate and volcano-sedimentary formations, as well as large mid-Miocene barren intrusions. Extensive field work and detailedmapping of different styles of orebodies suggest that ore formation in the area was related to the late-Miocene magmatism. Good outcrop conditions and superimposing of different mineralisation styles make Morococha an ideal location for studying ore-forming processes in a complex porphyry-related magmatic-hydrothermal system in which porphyry-to-epithermal transition occurred.
